i've been near constantly seeing mistagged posts on my dash so i thought i'd make a short little guide on how to tag for scopophobia, since most posts i see tagged with it don't actually use the tag properly. i'm someone with (rather mild) scophobia as well as an artist who makes pieces based off that fear, and the current usage of tags for it makes filtering it properly kind of impossible, and i've never seen anyone make a proper guide post like this, so... i'd really appreciate reading through and reblogging this post, especially if you're someone who uploads original art/images/edits!!

any image where the main focus is on a person or character's eyes, primarily in the context of horror, should be tagged as "#scopophobia" or similar trigger tags. i'd say to tag any images with eyes in unnatural places or "clusters" of eyes, closeups of eyes (specifically realistic ones), or any kind of uncanny or scary looking eye imagery (think the typical analog horror type of face edits). what triggers someone's scopophobia varies from person to person, so this is kind of up to your discretion as the OP. if the eyes are meant to be frightening or the focus of the image, tag it for scopophobia!!

images of characters or people looking at the camera (with no horror aspects) should be tagged something like "#eye contact". not everyone with scopophobia is bothered by eye contact, some are- phobias kind of come in a spectrum! if it's not a close up or meant to be scary, you almost never need to give it the scopo tag. using "#eye contact" makes it easy for people who are bothered by it to avoid it, without it getting filtered for people who aren't.

you do NOT need to tag EVERY image with eyes!!! about 70% of the posts i see filtered for scopophobia have literally nothing triggering in them, just a person/character that just... has eyes. scopophobia is not the phobia of eyes EXISTING, it's a phobia of being watched/stared at. please please please don't tag every single image of a person or animal with #scopophobia, it makes people like me have no idea what posts are safe to unfilter!

the current way people use the tags make it a gamble on if unfiltering it will show you an extremely triggering image or just.. a human being that's not even looking at the camera. i've seen pictures and gifs of animals with really small and not-at-all notable eyes tagged as scopophobia, and it's just extremely unhelpful and annoying... hopefully this helps clear up any confusion on what does and doesn't need to be tagged!

i'd recommend using the tags #scopophobia, #scopo, and #eye contact. i usually use #scopophobia tw, #scopo tw, and #eye contact tw, but i don't recommend making the tags any more elaborate than that- please don't try to make these tags "pretty" to fit in with your aesthetic tagging system, these tags genuinely help people with severe phobias navigate the internet easier!! please make it simple for people to filter!!

you also don't need to tag this post at all, i'd actually prefer if you didn't because there's no example images and i'd like as many people to see this as possible!! thank you!! ❤︎‬
