closed starter with: lorenzo and angelo (@thenxghtwemxt) location: the military yards time: afternoon
The air was heavy and humid, and the ground was still dark from the rain that had only just passed through. A thin layer of sweat covered Lorenzo, but he kept his grip firm around the hilt of his practice blade. Across from him was a young, scrappy soldier- far sweatier and more winded. The boy was young, still green with the sword, but he lacked the predictability he’d seen so many seasoned soldiers fall into, and it kept an experienced swordsman like Lorenzo on his toes. The two sparred for a few minutes, but the battle eventually ended with the young soldier’s sword clattering to the ground. He gave a quick word of advice to the boy, his attention now taken by the observer who had arrived at some point during their sparring. Not in any rush, Lorenzo returned the practice blade to the rack before approaching Angelo. “Come to tend to the flowers, brother?” He was still breathing heavily, his shirt now drenched with sweat.

Somewhere else in Aldaria...
It's nearly impossible for me to get into something without trying to shove my OCs into it, and Fields of Mistria is no different.
Bios Below!
Roxie - Town Doctor who is (not-so-) secretly a sorceress, taking after her late mother. She originally set up shop to study the magic around the area, but grew to realize the town needed her medical help.
Mia - Travelling merchant. Few other people come to [town name], so there's no competition. Though she tries to stay distant, she doesn't realize she's already been adopted as one of the townsfolk.
Lorenzo - Lord heir and leader of the town while his father serves at the capital. Just as much of a workaholic and organization-minded as Adelaide from Mistria, but not as friendly. Awkward with people in general. Kinda paranoid?
Emil - Backup heir. He's pretty sure he won't be needed, as much as his brother worries otherwise. Chooses to help out at the inn, though most people suspect it's an excuse to chat. Though he seems like a bit of a slacker, he deeply cares about the town and the people in it, and acts as a conduit between the town and Lorenzo.
Leon - Reliable, cheery, and slightly absentminded farmhand. Who actually owns the farm? I don't know! He's sure they'll be back soon. At least he gets to sample some of the fresh cheese, and he has a way with the animals. Used to be a navigator on a ship, but it turns out he's terrible with directions and just wanted to look at the stars. (I had a really hard time figuring out what his job is.)
Jun - Fisher who does a little carpentry on the side. Might've served in the royal army at one point, but they'd rather not bring that up. Easygoing and always ready to lend an ear.
Aiden - Rogue turned blacksmith. Does not want to be bothered and would much prefer to watch the town's shenanigans from a safe distance.
Angelo - An anxious runaway convinced that he needs to prove his worth. Thankfully, he also happens to be Leon's little brother, and once found out, he's given a place to stay. He's basically a stray teen who does odd jobs around town. Anything to keep him out of the mines.

‘I did hear something of interest,’ Angelo says after this moment of thought. ‘Marsilio’s in town. Got here quick off the mark, considering there would hardly have been time to convey the miracle to him down in Celle and for him to pack bags and high back up here.’ ‘Is he?’ Lorenzo perks up. ‘That is of interest…you’ve been sitting on this, haven’t you?’ Angelo tilts hand left/right, perhaps, perhaps. It is only, Lore has been so hard on Marsilio – at least he has been hard about Marsilio to Angelo – and Angelo didn’t want his friend to do anything rash. ‘He’s a good man,’ Angelo reminds Lorenzo who needs no reminding. ‘He loves you.’ ‘Angelo, that man would love Satan himself if he were presented with the opportunity.’
Lorenzo isn't wrong, to be fair. Marsilio would be like "we should try and love Satan. It might save him. Also all others who were cast out of heaven" and everyone would be like "oh my god put the devil back where you found him" and Marsilio would insist, "I know he has a better nature, I believe in his ability to reform!" etc. Pope Sixtus IV staring into the camera like he 's on the Office as he experiences inherited war flash-backs to the Origen heresy crises.
Marsilio can have a little apokatastasis.. ,,, as a treat..,,.. ,,

Below are some quotes that show why each character is placed where they are, along with more context when I feel like it's needed.
Angelo
He winked, turning the paper around to reveal his headshot. Printed next to it were the details he’d expect: Full name, Ángelo James Summers, a height and weight that barely qualified him for the IF, his rank, date of birth, among other things. A couple of the details were wrong, but this had been printed before he graduated from cadet to ranger. (LIAR)
There's a very important detail that's wrong here, but Angelo's narration doesn't mention it for the entirety of his first episode.
Mia
She lifted up a poster of moon-specific rocks. Checkmarks were by ones Mia and—ones that Mia found. (LIAR)
“It is what it is.” The sick ranger told herself and the others. (DENIAL)
Leon
“Something’s up.” He seemed to be in the middle of a conversation with Jun. “It’s really fishy that the chief commander’s sons get to be in charge. They’re rookies. It’s like letting that dorky kid [Leon] you were talking to run the place.” Leon didn’t know who he referred to, but he felt bad for whoever the dorky kid was. (OBLIVIOUS)
Toni
After they returned from the bathroom, [guy who tidies so much, other characters find it weird] gracefully accepted the lint brush and spray bottle. He took extra time to make sure they were placed back in the closet neatly along with everything else inside. What a gentleman! (OBLIVIOUS)
Lorenzo
She giggled. Was what he said funny? He glanced over at Wattson for some kind of confirmation, but she must’ve been completely engrossed in her book. Her face was fully buried in it. (OBLIVIOUS)
Stand around and pose while nearly naked, if Lorenzo remembered correctly. He’d rather not. However, he did know for a fact that the gym models were chosen for their admirable physiques, so he took that as a compliment, even if something about it make his muscles tense. (DENIAL) “No, thank you.”
In the first example, it's revealed later on that Wattson knew the woman talking to Lorenzo and wanted to avoid her. In the second, he suspects he's being flirted with but is trying to ignore it.
Mai
Then she flubbed a note… Or she would’ve if she were some second-rate know-nothing! Unknown to everyone, Mai was inventing a new genre. A sound so cutting edge, it put her in agony! She abandoned the new genre just as quickly as her heart beat against her chest. Between shallow breaths, she flashed a smile at the crowd. Everyone else smiled back. They didn’t see her as inept. They knew better. (DENIAL)
I didn't bold anything here because the whole passage is a clear example of denial. This is from something I haven't posed yet.
Honorable mentions go to Emil, who feels like he should be on his chart, but all the times he's obscuring things from other characters is in dialogue, not narration and Higgy, who I almost put on this chart but realized that he's not in denial. He's got a secret fourth thing going on (deluding himself).
That would actually be a useful fourth axis for my characters. It's not quite the same as denying something that is happening. It's more like when a character's personality affects how they're perceiving things despite that perception not lining up with what's going on in the story.
Example:
Roxie let go of Jun, allowing what Angelo assumed was the opportunity to murder him either physically or emotionally.
At this point, Angelo has no reason to assume that Jun would be hostile towards him, but his anxiety makes him jump to that conclusion.
do you all see my vision here

Ergo Proxy Opening: In search for the artwork's source
Ergo Proxy's Opening is a fascinating piece of artwork characterized by it's kaleidoscopic mix of scenery, images from the series and subtle references to pieces of art and literature. The whole design reminds me a bit of the style of Kyle Cooper in intro sequences like Se7en . Some are very clear while others are quite cryptic and frankly unreadable. This post will summarize a few of those references and their sources:
Holy Images
First we have the apparition of some glass panels and a statue in a column, and the image of some industrial complex. The statue have a chalice and appears to be a young man, and an eagle at his feet. Those are the attributes of Saint John the Younger. With that in mind, the search was easier... and after almost 14 hours of reading and searching, I found two of the three artworks.
Both the statue and the stained glass comes from the The Cathédrale Saints-Michel-et-Gudule at Brussels.
Stained Glass, probably made by Jean-Baptiste Capronnier (c. 1870):
Another decorated window appears, this time with a more modern artwork. The decorated window was designed by Alfons Mucha, c. 1930, for the reconstruction work for St. Vitas Cathedral in Prague.
The Power of Seven and the Lapis Philosoficus
The occasional image of complex astrological or alchemical heptagrams flashes many times during the opening, being this one the most clear snap I could get. The text in the center of it reads "Ma Te Ri A Pri Ma *" that confirms the alchemical nature of the illustration.
After many attempts to find the source of the illustration i had to dive into my older alchemy notes. Suddenly I remember the works of a notorious alchemist obsessed with number seven, none other than Sir Isaac Newton. And Eureka!
the image comes from a set of notes on the processes behind the achievement of the philosopher's stone, titled "Lapis Philosophicus cum suis rotis elementaribus" and dated to c. 1690
Landnámabók
Some of the decorations that appears on the opening comes directly from the icelandic text of settlers, a medieval Icelandic written work which describes in considerable detail the settlement (landnám) of Iceland by the Norse in the 9th and 10th centuries CE.
La Glorification de l'Art
This one was relatively easy to find. It is a quite common allegorical representation.
The building housing the Royal Museum of Ancient Art in Brussels is a masterpiece designed by Alphonse Balat, the Court's favorite architect, the sculpture flanking the main entrance is the work of Paul de Vigne, and was made around 1885. La Glorification de l'Art depicts Art as a winged youth, accompanied by Glory and Fame. It also appears on the opening. Art, represented by a winged man, receives from the hand of Glory a palm and a crown; while the Fame, with trumpet and bumper, publishes her exploits.
Rhyme 247
notice the words on the right side of the screenshot: "e vero", "Non Veder" "Gran Ventura"
Michelangelo Buonarroti was an exceptionally good artist, and a passionate poet too, even when he preferred to keep most of his literary production quite obscure. One of his works for the Sagrestía Nuova at the Medici Chapel in Florence was a representation of the Night, placed over the tomb of Giuliano di Lorenzo de' Medici, Duke of Nemours. Night was singularly praised by his contemporaries, especially Giovanni Strozzi, who dedicated an epigram on 1544:
La Notte che tu vedi in sì dolci attidormire, fu da un Angelo scolpitain questo sasso e, perché dorme, ha vita:destala, se nol credi, e parleratti.
Michelangelo responded in another epigram, today known as Rhyme 247:
Caro m'è 'l sonno, e più l'esser di sasso, mentre che 'l danno e la vergogna dura;non veder, non sentir m'è gran ventura; però non mi destar, deh, parla basso
This Rhyme appears on Ergo Proxy in another occasion:
The poem as appears on the beginning of the first episode
NIGHT DAWN DAY DUSK
Donov Mayer's Collective Entourage are embodied by the four sculptures from the allegorical monument (Sagrestía Nuova) of Michellangelo. A pair of the statues were located over the sarcophagus of Giuliano de' Medici, (Day and the Night) and Lorenzo de' Medici (Dusk (or Twilight) and the Dawn) respectively. On the series, each have the name of one prominent occidental philosopher:
Lacan: as Night, Voiced by: Atsuko Tanaka (Japanese), Barbara Goodson (English)
Derrida: as Dawn, Voiced by: Yōko Sōmi (Japanese), Melodee Spevack (English)
Husserl: as Day, Voiced by: Hidekatsu Shibata (Japanese), Michael McConnohie(English)
Berkeley: as Dusk, Voiced by: Yuu Shimaka (Japanese), Doug Stone(English)
[Unknown]
Some artworks or pieces of literature used are still unknown (for me)
The industrial landscape

Thank you so much for reading so far

Lorenzo snatches back the cantos from Angelo’s eager fingers. ‘Tell me what news you have for me. Start with the not-good.’ ‘Dead chickens.’ ‘I beg your pardon.’ Angelo repeats himself. Adds, ‘there are ten of them across three properties in Santa Croce. Beheaded, and most fully eaten save two which I presume were the final ones of the evening for our mystery culprit.’ Lorenzo rolls the edge of the poems between fingers. He suggests, ‘Hound?’ ‘Nay, cat.’ ‘Ten chickens are too much for a single cat.’ Angelo nods in a sage manner. He holds out his hands and positions them so they show a width of four or five feat. ‘Big cat,’ he says. ‘A cobbler was up with a toothache and saw the beast. He said it slunk along rooftops and was this big.’ ‘Small lion?’ Lorenzo knows his people to be imaginative, perhaps it is merely that.
Lorenzo over here just throwing darts at a board of "shit that could eat ten chickens in my city in the middle of the night".
Lorenzo: ....wild boar?
Angelo: that seems a bit desperate.
Lorenzo: I've gone through hound, cat, small lion, wolf, lynx, falcon, angry monkey--
Angelo: I said it was a big cat.
Lorenzo: you've said nothing useful!
Angelo just laughs.
