I just recently found out that Jon actually has two crows named "Craw" and "Nightmare" (Kudos to Mistress of Fear for the info!), so as the Crow and Raven lover that I am, I had to sketch Jonathan and his birbs.

I did try to use the cell shading, which I have improved, but certainly it shows it is still out of my comfort zone hahaha.

I did base of his design of some of the comic looks and Maxwell as I kinda did shoot myself in the foot by not drawing my version of Jonathan first, but oh well XD. Likewise, I did want to keep him Ginger as outside The Dark Knight (aka my intro to Jonathan) is the iconic Batman the Animated series. I prefer his S2 design, but i enjoyed his episodes but I wished he was on more.

I did originally thought about drawing him in a funny incorrect quote I found, but it might go into another day, although I finally got the idea for Jonathan x my OC (Elizabeth) drawing too. I can't 100% guarantee I'll get this done as I am a very busy buzz person (who does get hit with depresso mood swings, but I'll do my best)

Nova’s Notes - Dracula Daily - June 5

Dr. Seward is back with another exciting podcast update :D

(Also, for clarity’s sake, I’ll probably be calling him Jack/Seward from here on out because first and foremost, I just like that nickname for him and also it’s a little bit easier to differentiate Jonathan vs. John. Since he’s only been referred to as John thus far — that will change later — I just wanted to clear up that when I say “Jack”, I mean Dr. John Seward!)

Looks like he’s studying Renfield again, who is proving to be an “interesting” case.

“He has certain qualities very largely developed; selfishness, secrecy, and purpose. I wish I could get at what is the object of the latter. He seems to have some settled scheme of his own, but what it is I do not yet know.”

Per the last Jack podcast, he talked about selfish vs. unselfish people and their threat level (I talk more about that here, if you’re interested). He seems to have decided upon Renfield being a selfish man — aka his threat level is low — though he does seem to have an unspecified purpose that Seward can’t figure out. I wonder how Jack differentiates between an unselfish person’s duty and a selfish person’s purpose, since they seem to be almost the same thing, per his logic. Then again, they could be very different!

“His redeeming quality is a love of animals, though, indeed, he has such curious turns in it that I sometimes imagine he is only abnormally cruel. His pets are of odd sorts. Just now his hobby is catching flies.”

Jack, buddy, I love you, but you can’t say someone has a love of animals and then in the same sentence think they’re probably also abnormally cruel to them?! Then again, I have to keep in mind, he’s also speaking these words so this is more of an active stream of consciousness than, say, Jonathan’s journal. I suppose it would put it more in line with Lucy’s letters, who impulse writes. Love to see these parallels!

On another note, how did Renfield catch these flies without hurting them and where is he storing them? Did the asylum give him jars or did he have to improvise? I have so many questions, but my bug phobia prevents me from wanting the answers tbh.

Yesh, that begs the question: how many flies did he catch? Again, I actually don’t want the answers, but since I’m analyzing this, I at least needed to ask.

Ok fine, let’s do a little math here. It’s been 11 days since the last time we heard from Seward. He didn’t talk about the fly-catching the last time, but perhaps it was because there was only like 5-6 flies there and he didn’t feel the need to mention it.

So if we give Renfield 5 flies the first day (minimum estimate) and he catches around 10 flies a day (a high guess, yes, but we know Renfield is determined and this is an average so some days he might’ve caught 8 and some days he might’ve caught 15) a day, we can multiply 11 x 10 to give us 110 flies + 5 (from the first day) = about 115 flies!! (I really hope I did this math right or I’m going to look silly)

In the iconic words of Phil Swift, “That’s a lot of damage.”

Again, this is an estimate — I’m not pretending this is actually the number, though it is certainly a possibility. While that seems like a large number for one man to catch and a lot of flies to get into a room, keep in mind this is the 1890s, which means more bugs in the area and Renfield could’ve skewed the numbers by leaving old food around to attract flies.

“To my astonishment, he did not break out into a fury, as I expected, but took the matter in simple seriousness. He thought for a moment, and then said: ‘May I have three days? I shall clear them away.’ Of course, I said that would do. I must watch him.”

Seward, I would suggest watching him very closely because uh…I happen to remember how he’s going to clear the flies and spoiler alert: it’s not just opening up whatever storage container he has them in. So, you can imagine with my bug phobia, I’d rather not analyze this further. Let’s just say it’s interesting he picked three days as the number to clear them away. He’s just built different, I guess.

So that’s it! For the next two weeks, we will be in a Dracula Daily Drought (try saying that five times fast). I am already sad about this!! 😫😭😭

In the meantime, I suppose it is high time I finish my BBC Dracula liveblog, so be on the lookout for that (I am more likely to do it putting it in writing!!).

Six months of war are six months too many in which more than 100 journalists have been killed in Gaza. This massacre must stop. Gaza’s reporters must be protected, those who wish must be evacuated, and Gaza’s gates must be opened to international media. The few reporters who have been able to leave bear witness to the same terrifying reality of journalists being attacked, injured and killed. The Israel Defence Forces are silencing those who are driven by a duty to report the facts. RSF calls on the international community, its leaders and its governments, to do everything to step up pressure on the Israeli authorities to end this disaster. Palestinian journalism must be protected as a matter of urgency.

RSF has met with some of the evacuated journalists in the Qatari capital, Doha, including Al Jazeera’s iconic bureau chief Wael al-Dahdouh, Agence France-Presse (AFP) photojournalist Mahmoud al-Hams, RSF correspondent Ola al-Zaanoon, and her son, freelance reporter Moussa al-Zaanoon. 

They describe the risks they ran to keep reporting the news as Gaza continued to be completely closed. “We felt it was up to us to provide the entire world with information,” RSF’s correspondent said. “A journalist was killed or wounded every day,” her 24-year-old son added. “I was in constant fear of losing my father, my mother and my own life, but I understood that it was my duty to report what was happening.”

These journalists, who were evacuated from Gaza in January and February, were in such constant fear of being targeted by Israeli strikes that other civilians were afraid to be near them, said AFP’s photojournalist Mahmoud Hams. “During the evacuation of Gaza City [in October], some people didn’t want me to be near them for fear that I would be targeted as a journalist,” Hams said. “Others refused to rent us houses to live, work and rest in because they had the unshak

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reiterates its call to the international community to protect Palestinian journalism and step up pressure on Israel for an end to the massacre in Gaza, where more than 105 journalists have been killed since 7 October, including at least 22 killed in the course of their work. Gaza is still inaccessible and subject to constant bombardment but few journalists have been allowed to leave.

“Protection” is the emphatic response from Gazan journalists when asked by RSF what they most need in Gaza today. They have lived in constant terror since 7 October, counting the deaths of loved-ones and colleagues. Jonathan looks up. He doesn’t remember how he got here. A moment ago he was sinking. Or was it floating? Either way, he drowned. Smothered. There is a certainty now as there was before that the Count is near. The closeness of him in Piccadilly had struck a deep and profound cord in him even in the crowd. Now that cord is an entire hellish violin playing until it screeches.

Here! He is here! Up, go, hurry!

But there was only the drowning. The sweet-bitter crush of a blanket around a strengthless babe who kicks and struggles to no avail.

Then, suddenly, here. The boat.

The ferryman has his back to him, hood drawn up against a frigid mist. Black shores hint at themselves through the fog.

“He has done this for almost half a millennium. Did you ever suspect as much in the castle, even with his dust-choked riches? An old monster, surely, but not ancient. Surely he couldn’t be. The people knew him. The people feared him. The people knew then all that the professor had to scrape from a library. You would not have lasted were it not for them and their holy icons, their gifts and knowledge. They know what it is to slay his kind.”

Still though he is, something thrashes violently in Jonathan’s heart. Wanting, needing, fighting to move. To be aware.

Somewhere close. Near enough to touch. Jonathan eyes the mist warily.

Figures move on the black shore now. Watching them pass. Hazy as they are, Jonathan knows them all. Children. A mother. Sailors. Lucy’s wedding band glints as she waves.

“He will not let you go, Jonathan Harker. If he must lose any of the other jackals in potentia, you will still go on to suffer him. Through her. Through the cudgel he means to make of her and your heart. You have cost him too much to go free and he will have you bowed and bloodied at his feet. You may yet let him for her sake. Once he lures you back. All of you, so sure, so prepared, will lope after him to the genius loci, his realm of power. The land that worked against you from every angle, every muscle of Nature and Supernature. And there you will all do worse than die.”

Let me go. Please, something is wrong, I know it, I know the Count is close, he has done something, he is doing something, I need to go—

The mist thins. What had been a sparse milling of figures now revealed itself as a legion. Dead faces staring out at the river in an endless menagerie of souls reduced to cattle.

“You will lose. Because you are only what all his enemies have been before, what he sold his own soul to conquer unfettered. Mortal meat waiting for the butcher. If you want to win, to save her as more than a lifeless corpse or a mobile one, you must be something other than that same heroic chattel.”

I am no Faust.

“Nor could you be if I desired someone worth making the offer. I may not have time to rest on my laurels, but I have counted him as a nuisance not worth bothering with so long as he kept to his mountains. There are so few of his kind that make true trouble. But now he means to play a global tyrant. England is only the first step. Its colonies will follow. Its neighbors after them. The world is a throat and he is the tick who wishes to drink it dry. Jonathan rights himself on the boat. The river is leading into a cave vaster and more lightless than the void between stars. He tries not to stare at it, to focus on the back of the ferryman’s hood.

I will make no promise I do not understand the facets of. I will not be trapped again by details never given to me.

“As is wise. But desperation ever makes decisions on our behalf, Jonathan Harker. Your choice will be no airy whim. It will simply be the only choice to make. I do apologize for that. Gods and devils are not alone in rigging their games. Know this, at least. There shall be no need for a contract. No signatures in blood or fealties sworn. Such pageantry is not for us. No more than it was the day Peter Hawkins signed you on. The offer and its vocation will simply be ready and waiting for you. Make the decision. It will be done.”

Jonathan’s hand lands on the ferryman’s shoulder.

The Ferryman turns.

His eyes are burning hollows. His eyes are all that is left that could be called a face.

“Wake. She is calling to you.”

And he is in the bed with Mina.

And he is in a nightmare.

And he does not wake from it as she tells them all of the Count’s visit, her blood and the Vampire’s staining his breast.

And his body sits and breathes and listens.

And as his mind swims back to a boat on the River, a sickle grows where his soul should be.

Mike Choi

Let’s be honest- Choi is pretty much *THE X-23* artist! From “Target X” to “X-Force vol. 3”, there’s just something about his art that always manages to capture Laura’s essence perfectly!

2) Joshua Middleton

I KNOW Middleton is a controversial choice…but there’s just something sad and tragic about his rendition of Laura that I really love. He’s one of the X-23 artists that I really wish would return on another X-23 book!

3) Will Conrad

It might be because of the Hellion and Laura “Killing Dream” scene, but Conrad is one of my favorite X-23 artists! While definitely not the strongest X-23 artist listed…I just really like his rendition of Laura!

(I think part of it is that I just like Laura with pouty lips!) 😂🤣

4) Billy Tan

Tan probably SHOULD be higher, simply because he did such a wonderful job with conveying a wide variety of emotions despite Laura being completely silent!!… Tan really makes “Innocence Lost” the power house book that it is and if it wasn’t for Choi and Middleton, I would probably say he is the most iconic X-23 artist!

5) Skottie Young

While I do weirdly enjoy Mark Brooks 90’s style chibi art…Young is definitely *THE New X-Men artist!* While I wasn’t much of a fan of his version of Julian…I deeply LOVE his Laura, Surge, Pixie, and Anole and appreciate how much Young IS the Bill Sienkiewicz of NXM!

6) Sana Takeda

Takeda is kind of a “hit or miss” for me…if I am being honest, I like Takeda’s rendition of Hellion better than I like her Laura.

Some of Takeda’s panels are really gorgeous and really fit the scene perfectly (like the panel of her with Jubilee!), and some just feel kind of out of place in an X-23 book; I would kind of compare it to “Batman: Gotham Knight” with bishie Bruce Wayne… sometimes it’s just a little bit jarring and it kind of takes me out of the moment.

7) Kalman Andrasofszky

While Andrasofszky has ONLY done covers…I tend to think they have all been pretty memorable! I especially LOVE his Hellion and Laura cover and I wish Andrasofszky was doing the main art for the new Schultz book!

8) Marcio Takara

I really enjoy Takara and how fun his art is; my only wish is that he had drawn Laura during her X-23 days, because I think his commission work of her is a bit better than his work on ANW. That being said- his Gabby is positively ADORABLE, as is his Jonathan!

9) Sara Pichelli

I REALLY love Pichelli’s art despite it being a Bendis book, focusing on Laura and O5 Angel, and Laura’s eye color being totally wrong!

Pichelli’s “goth Laura” is just absolutely beautiful! She’s another artist that I would love to see return to X-23, because her art is just Joelle Jones levels of beauty!

The nightclub ANXM issue is hands down some of the best Laura art out there and if it wasn’t for the coloring mistake, she’d probably be higher on the list for me!

10) Juann Cabal

While I don’t always love how Cabal does faces, he is definitely one of the most creative comic artists out there! The detail he puts in and how he stylizes the onomatopoeia is just really engaging! I especially LOVED his work in the “OWL” arc!

11) David Finch

While I am not always a big Finch fan, nor do I always think his art suits every character, I do really like his rendition of Laura. The excess of lines and grittiness just work really nicely with Laura and remind me of Jim Lee or Andy Kubert’s 90’s X-Men, but with a more modern color palette.

12) David Lopez

I really loved Lopez’s art when it first came out but have kind of cooled on it a bit since then. I think part of it is it just doesn’t really “look” like Laura to me. Compared to all the other artists, I just don’t feel like Lopez captures Laura’s “essence” as well as the others.

That being said, Lopez did a great job on “Four Sisters” and the panels in Paris are especially beautiful!

13) Phil Noto

Noto is that artist a LOT of people dislike because all his faces look more or less the same. I will give Noto this- I think his “face” works well for Laura in this instance; there’s just something kind of innocent about it that I like. I also like how Laura is a little more “plain” and “awkward” in his work; she looks like a genuine teenager here. She blends in to the background more.

I know Laura is SUPPOSED to be very attractive, but in some ways I enjoy Noto’s plainer rendition and I often think Noto’s work is in general, better suited for teen books than drawing characters like Emma or Black Widow.

14) Clayton Crain

While I like Crain’s work and think it was a good choice for X-Force…it does sometimes bug me how “CGI”- lite it looks…it definitely hasn’t aged well.

Some panels are absolutely amazing…others…not so much!

While I do think Crain had improved over time, his old work is, for lack of a better word, sometimes kind of clunky!

OK, I gave in and binged The Magnus Protocol and I cannot get over the way Mr Bonzo isn't even 'inspired by' Mr Blobby, he just straight-up is Mr Blobby. I saw someone describe him as a 'Barney the dinosaur knock-off' and was so offended, like, do your homework, Barney wishes he had what Mr Blobby had. Mr Blobby contained more horrendous chaos in one of his upsettingly long eyelashes than Barney the dinosaur had in his whole pitiful body. There are at least three layers of awful going on here: the parody that becomes the real thing that becomes a living nightmare. Nothing about Mr Blobby was ever even intended to be wholesome or sweet. He was supposed to be awful and annoying. He was hideously successful at this. Then people (inexplicably) loved him anyway. So he became ubiquitous and life became torture. He's not a sickly-sweet childhood icon with a creepy retrospective filter slapped over it. "And then he rips your arms clean off" isn't just wearily playing the lullaby in a spooky minor key, it's ... the logical conclusion of what he was to begin with. I used to hate him so fucking much and now I'm so weirdly glad he existed. This would evaporate if I ever had to see him on TV again. I love how much Jonathan Sims clearly detests and understands him, how passionately he has obviously thought about this. He is absolutely right.

Could you imagine what would’ve happened if Tommy saw what Billy did to Steve and Stomarol were still together? Idk how bringing Steve into the Upside Down stuff would work if he wasn’t dating Nancy, I just think it’s an interesting concept. Or maybe Steve finds Dustin actually looking for his cat in the woods and then meets up with the Party and Max and that’s how the fight with Billy happens if there’s no Upside Down? And Tommy and Carol are busy with their parentsthat day, or they got into a fight with Steve so he’s going to apologize to them like he was to Nancy, so they aren’t with him. Like if Tommy was mad at Jonathan after the fight in season 1, I think he would go feral at Billy especially since Steve was knocked unconscious

I just crave more Stomarol and I’m so close to writing my own version, but I’m just scared it would suck because it would be the first fanfic I’ve ever written

Tommy and Carol mutually agreed that it wasn't cheating if it was with Steve. He was their mutually agreed exception and they were so close to getting Steve to agree to have a threesome with them. And then they'd slowly envelop them into their dynamic, and create the ultimate throuple. Only that Nancy chick had to get in the way and Steve fell in love with her. Hard agree that they hated her because she got in the way of their Steve. He was theirs first. And when the rumours went around about her cheating on him, them getting into a big fight, her breaking his heart and then immediately getting with that loner Jon? They'd hate her even more. She's the reason they're not close to Steve anymore. She ruined everything. I don't think canon them would think too hard about their behaviour, and how Steve wanted them to be less of an asshole. They're 16. All 16 year olds are assholes.

But this is fandom and I say stomarol throuple 💜

If stomarol were together when Billy fought with Steve, they'd kill him. They'd ruin his life. They'd get him sent to fucking prison. Carol 100% has the ability to spread nasty rumours that take over the whole school and ruin someone's reputation. Billy would never get any friends, any girls, ever again. Especially if the stomarol trio were still together, because they'd rule that school. Ultimate popular kids. I can also see Tommy straight up reporting Billy for assault. He almost killed Steve! They could have lost him! I don't Steve would be very happy if they went against him to do so, but I don't see Tommy caring? Steve got a severe concussion. He got brain damage. Rotting in jail is the least that asshole Billy deserves.

I've had so many thoughts about stomarol getting involved in the Upside Down in an au where Steve doesn't date Nancy, throuple all the way. And I can't quite decide on an answer?

Because without Steve inviting Nancy to his place to the party, she wouldn't have invited Barb, and she wouldn't have been taken. But then does that mean Nancy doesn't get involved with the Upside Down? Or does she get involved another way?

Or does Steve invite her as a cover? Because he knows she's interested in him. He's hot, he's good at flirting. He knows what a person who likes him looks like. Because Tommy and Carol are publicly dating. Have been since middle school. Steve however? It's the 80s and he's a teen boy who hangs around his best friends a lot. He's touchy and soft and loves them. So he goes on a series of first dates with random girls. He flirts, he kisses them, but he doesn't sleep with them. Doesn't date them long term. Something to cover him so people don't get suspicious.

Does Barb still disappear? Does one of the trio disappear?

I know I like the idea of Tommy and Carol getting involved with the Upside Down, along with Steve. Mostly because those three cannot keep a secret from each other. Not for the big things. The reason they work long term is because they communicate. They have to.

Tommy, Carol, and Steve all being cool bitchy mentors to the young teens is so good. They think they're so cool.

I have this image in my head, of the three of them sitting on the kerb after the fight with the demogorgon. Steve still with his bruised face, bat in hand. Curled together, not caring who sees. They could have died. Monsters are real. And it's just bought them closer. Steve's started revealing his soft underbelly more, he doesn't want to be an asshole. Miserable. They almost died! and because Tommy & Carol love Steve more than keeping themselves safe with their bitchy armour, they all start to soften. Be less mean.

And the Jonathan of it all! @findafight mentioned in the STWG that Jon was still in the woods taking his pervy pictures. Only instead of Steve and Nancy of course - it was Tommy and Carol he caught a photo of. Carol with her top off, them touching. And because no one else except stomarol knows what Steve's bedroom looks like, they don't suspect a thing. They don't suspect that Steve was just out of view of the window, watching them.

And it makes Steve fucking mad. And scared. And on edge. Because they could have been caught! Literally any other option except Tommy & Carol would have been the end of them! If it was Steve and Carol, they would have been labelled dirty cheaters. If it was Tommy and Steve they'd have been outed. And it was all three of them it would have been the end. Their threesome exposed, and they'd have to be so careful not to reveal that it was more than a one time thing.

Steve still smashes the camera. They rip up the photos. And I think they'd still fight Jon in the alleyway. There isn't the 'Nancy The Slut Wheeler' of it all, of course, but they'd rile him up. Begging for a fight.

And yeah 😂 that got slightly out of hand lmao. I just love them! They're so fun to think about! Especially in a world where they last. They make it work.

How Can You Blame Me? Growing Up Is Chaotic by @winterlovesong1 - I'm linking to her entire profile because there is just too much Shawn/Angela goodness to pick just one story. Her character study of Shawn is perfection. Her writing has an ethereal quality which make her stories feel like a dream.

For Those Who Would Wish In Happily Ever Afters by @justanotherpersonwhowrites - this is a WIP that is very much worth checking out. It's a fresh look at Jon and Shawn's relationship post "Cult Fiction". Shawn is spiraling after Virna's letter turns his life upside down. With nowhere left to go, he ends up back at apartment 8.

Aside from the plot itself being engaging, there is an OC introduced who is new to Shawn but not to Jon. If you like Audrey, you'll like Sarah.

They Say Ignorance Is Bliss by @justanotherpersonwhowrites

Beautiful take on Cory and Shawn's friendship from Cory's POV. Canon inconsistencies are mentioned and given a twist that makes sense. Pre-show set up for this iconic friendship.

My Own Boy Meets World Reboot by @obscureobsidiandraws - I cannot recommend this one enough and it deserves more attention than it's getting. I can't find a complaint that BMW fans have had over the years that isn't addressed and corrected. While changes have been made to character backgrounds and it's no longer the 90s the heart and humor of the show shines through.

If you like early seasons Eric, you'll definitely want to look into this. Those wanting Jonathan Turner to adopt Shawn will be happy too. Audrey is also a part of the cast, although with a bit of change to her as well. It's been a lot of fun discovering this new version of her.

The series is written in script format, but I encourage you not to skip past it because of that. These scripts are detailed and make me feel like I'm watching the show as I read.

(btw the other band member is robin on drums in the hc me and @wroteclassicaly discussed teehee). the rest of the band is sluttier than eddie doe so y/n is able to get backstage w her friends. but eddies a total asshole to her and theres angst and who knows what other shit and but obviously yn gets to fuck eddie in the end bc duh.

Hana Yori Dango - broooo- bro. this show was made for my basic romantic ass, it was my first asian drama (or one of the first), it introduced me to Matsumoto Jun, had me hooked for two seasons (though im pretty sure i binged the second season and movie in 24 hours, long after i had watched the first season..? idk what that was about)

i am of the opinion f4 thailand did best in many ways but this will forever be THE adaptation in my heart. the songs were unmatched, the drama breathtaking (there are so many cliches that i didn't know were cliches back then lol) and the experience surreal. i'll always treasure this questionable classic 💖

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? - i enjoy this an unreasonable amount - my country's edition, that is; i just like having it in the bg and being a smartass, sometimes i run my mouth off so confidently and proceed to apologise to the tv when the contestant turns out to have been right lol

Weekly Idol - hear me out on this - aside from all of its issues, the show has always been my way of finding more about groups. especially back in 2015, those low quality episodes on yt helped me so much with getting into kpop; it can be very hit-or-miss but i have so many faves; many artists have been on multiple episodes throughout the years and yet show something entertaining every time. you can find new groups to stan through the mixed episodes and learn more about the members of groups you're already interested in (though for that i also rec individual shows like gose, wanteez, monsta x-ray etc.). i'm especially excited for eunkwang and minjoo as the new hosts, they are so funny on their own and i want to see their dynamic so bad

Pride & Prejudice - i've watched this just once but i can't not appreciate the accuracy to the book (except for the iconic lake scene lmao) and it covers british tv, 90s shows, austen books and period dramas all at once - all things i enjoy

Bridgerton - i had a whole piece written bout this but simply put - season 2 and kathony were a Thing for me. got me researching and binging a bunch of jonathan shows, reading most of the book and a bunch of tumblr posts..even looking through gifs now im going feral, i love them

New Girl - i usually play shows like this in the bg but i found myself paying a lot of attention and actually losing it laughing so many times, also nick and schmidt are the most precious intense bromance i've witnessed in fiction

• Weather reports make me vividly think of Kepler’s sassy remark to Minkowski in Wolf 359. Only a few people will understand what this means and it’s not at all relevant but…just wanted to put it out there that that one line from Kepler is burned into my memory.

• Love that people tried to signal the Demeter to reduce her sails. I know that’s the decent thing to do but…I just thought that was a sweet detail.

• “incredible” tempest? Strange fog formations? Yep, that sounds like Dracula!

• YESSS the people cheering from the shore “cleave” the gale! We love to see it! :D
