My Great British Wild Year: Part 2 of 5-Butterflies and moths
I had one of my greatest ever years of watching butterflies seeing forty seven species my highest ever amount in a year with many special ones. It began with a Brimstone in Winchester in March, then soon followed my first Red Admiral of the year, the species that went on to be a phenomenon with enormous amounts around this year which I enjoyed so much. Into April and I saw Peacock and Speckled Wood, and during the Scotland trip a Small Tortoiseshell. My heart swelled seeing Orange Tip when back with Small White, Comma and Holly Blue soon seen, the essence of spring. Then came our first specialist butterfly search of the year, our annual visit to Noar Hill on May’s first day where we were amazed again to see the gem Duke of Burgundy. Green-veined Whites came into my year well that week a key species for me this year. Martin Down magic was next with Small Copper one I saw so many times this year, Dingy Skipper, Grizzled Skipper and Green Hairstreak exuberant species seen in its glorious grassland, followed by warm and luminous Pearl-bordered Fritillaries at Bentley Wood. Butterflies thrived at my patch Lakeside Country Park with Small Copper, my first Small Heath and Common Blue of the year and mesmerising moments watching a dainty favourite of mine Brown Argus a star here and elsewhere throughout the season this year. Marvellous Marsh Fritillary was perhaps May’s standout, excitingly seen at Magdalen Hill for the first time ever for me and at hotspot where we’re more used to seeing them Martin Down. Small Blue, Large White and iconic Painted Lady coming into my year on that lepidoptera epic at Magdalen Hill. Back at Martin Down towards the end of May I was thrilled to see another mega of my year, the electrifying Adonis Blue.
Red Admiral later in the year at Winnall Moors in October
The beautiful Duke of Burgundy
Then came summer, heralded by Large Skipper and Meadow Brown arriving on patch and elsewhere, effervescent species. We saw Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary at Bentley Wood a week before our week in Anglesey, where a Welsh week of wonder in the extremely hot days brought many fantastic butterflies. The Range, South Stacks’s super Silver-studded Blues a New Forest highlight later in the year too and Ringlet, Dark Green Fritillary and Small Skipper across the week furthering my surge into summer and amazingly an early Common Grayling on the Great Orme probably the unique to it Hipparchia semele sub species an exciting moment with one of my favourites which was also a New Forest highlight later on. Summer was in full swing when we arrived back to Hampshire with marvellous Marbled White the epitome of summer seen and a fantastic Essex Skipper at Hayling Island pivotal to my year. Then the dizzy days of summer emerged, defined by big butterfly trips for us. Firstly coastal Durlston where there were clouds of a mini Dorset delight over the flower rich meadows, astonishing Lulworth Skippers a gorgeous species I never tire of seeing seen in huge volumes. Alongside other of the summer species that day we saw our first Gatekeepers of the year notably early, the early emergence not confined to here as I found in the coming days and weeks. In early July came our Knepp pilgrimage where we were treated to superb views of regal Purple Emperors, as well as White Admiral, our first stunning Silver-washed Fritillaries of the year and a precious White-letter Hairstreak. Also enjoyed that day were fine views of Purple Hairstreak, and in the week before and for many weeks after Knepp I was spellbound by watching these oak top dancers at Lakeside so many times getting wonderful views. Once again a key thread in my butterfly and Lakeside year seeing this monumental species so close to home.
Gatekeeper at Lakeside
Perhaps the ultimate moment of my sensational butterfly year was the dream realised on a weekend trip to Norfolk to see the Bee-eaters when at Hickling Broad our first ever Swallowtail flew past us. An exceptionally beautiful, intricately marked and pure giant butterfly that I had wanted to see for years, one of the great exhilarating moments of my year. Summer’s crown followed later in July, our first glimpses this year of sophisticated Chalkhill Blues at Stockbridge Down. At the end of July I had an extraordinary day around the Hampshire/Wiltshire border at Shipton Bellinger getting swashbuckling intimate views of eye-catching Brown Hairstreak a top species, our first Wall Brown of the year and at Perham Down seeing early for us appealing and exquisite Silver-spotted Skipper to confirm my year list as my highest ever. I saw the aforementioned four well multiple times. From late July to early August I was addicted to watching a group of butterflies from Meadow Brown to Holly Blue including the likes of Speckled Wood, Gatekeeper, Peacock, Painted Lady and Ringlet as I enjoyed carrying out so many Big Butterfly Counts again. In early September for species came the fabulous finishing touch of my butterfly year as we were enthralled watching a sun kissed mystical Clouded Yellow sail from flower to flower at Old Winchester Hill’s rich meadow. I excitedly saw another Clouded Yellow out the front in October in a strong run of seeing many butterflies of a few species late in the year.
The Old Winchester Hill Clouded Yellow
A Chalkhill Blue at Stockbridge Down
In one of my greatest moth years I had a stellar one for day flying moths with a wealth of Six-spot Burnets in the summer I enjoyed seeing them so much, my first ever Forester, Mother Shipton, splendid spring Speckled Yellow moths at Bentley Wood, Silver Y, gorgeous Mint moths, Pyrausta nigrata, amazing moments seeing Scarlet and Jersey Tiger moths on lunch breaks and sensational coastal views of mesmerising Hummingbird Hawk-moths at Durlston and South Stack. Other highlights of a year I saw more moths than ever and focused on them more in moth traps, coming in the house and daytime encounters were; majestic Willow Beauty, many Square-spot Rustics, Vine’s Rustic, Light Emerald, Treble-bar, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Brimstone Moth, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Brown Silver-line, Garden Carpet and impressive Large Yellow Underwing and Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing.
A Willow Beauty at home in late August
A Brown Silver-line at RSPB Valley Wetlands, Anglesey in June
A Six-spot Burnet at Lakeside in July

the little river in the night
ripples in the little river.
swallowtails reside on high banks.
willow's shivered leaves deliver
riddles to the sigh of night.
alive, like glints of silver,
sifted in the shore to splinter light,
the stars above are witness to the whispers
borne in true delight.
the midnight sliver moon,
the loon upon the moor,
the core of all that looms into the runic
heartfelt lunar chorus roar.
the cricket chirp, the soaring
moment holding hope in rhythms too divine
to find ought else besides the lost.
the little river in the night.

HELLO I would like for Jia 1, 13, 14 for Jiraak D (I will catch up in the fic but give me a taste now <3), P, S, T and for you my lovely friend, 🤩
HELLO, EVE!!! THANK YOU FOR ASKING AND THANK YOU FOR SLIDING THIS ASK GAME TOWARDS ME, IT WAS REALLY AMAZING!!! I missed answering about my blorbos...😊💖
☀️ask game!☀️
First big aspiration (i.e. what did they want to be when they grew up?)
Jia didn’t have big aspirations for herself when she was a child, I think! She was never too ambitious—this is something that I’ve written in the upcoming chapter of my fic, actually: [a heroine (...) who never aspired to any accolades, only to be a simple woman of wildflowers and thistles, of willows and cedar, of swallowtails and hawk-feathers]. So, she loved nature, she loved her books, she loved her alchemy ingredients, and I believe that something she first wished for herself, was to become a scholar, like her father. If she didn’t grow up with the Companions, I’d say she wouldn’t even care to learn how to fight—basically, her Shield-Siblings forced her to it…😂
13. First time being drunk/high
OKAY, ALRIGHT. Jia is an alchemist, right? She absolutely tastes moon sugar and frequently. Hands down. So I think the first time she became high as a kite was when she first tried it. She’s a sweet tooth, so she was carried away and consumed a large amount of moon sugar. I don’t believe it was a pleasant experience. It was quite a bad trip for her, as she was hit with anxiety, paranoia, and terrifying hallucinations, and given that Jia is already able to glimpse into timeless visions, this substance had a very negative effect on them and they almost drove her mad. Fortunately, she was in Heljarchen Hall, so our lady and savior Lydia was able to save the day…🥲
14. First time facing their fears
OH, THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION IS EXACTLY AT CH21 OF THE PRIEST AND THE DRAGONESS! Jia’s biggest fear is not being able to be in control of a situation, a result of the SA she has endured, and this loss of control is absolutely connected to the man who harmed her… So, the first time she comes across her fear and faces it (author’s note: like the girlboss she is) is when she meets her archnemesis again. Without spoiler-ing too much, they meet at a place where neither can attack the other physically, but Jia manages to rise above and display a fraction of her power regardless…👀
D. First kiss
OH, THE SMOOCH! I have answered a similar question here, which I believe you've already seen!
P. First time seeing the other all dressed up
AAAA I loved that question!!! SO. The first time Jia and Miraak see each other all dressed up hasn’t yet happened in my fic, but it will in a future chapter. It’s going to be during A Big Affair where both have to wear nice clothes to present themselves among many Important People. Miraak… how shall I put this? He’ll lose his mind. I have a scene clear in my head, where he sees Jia appearing at the other end of Heljarchen Hall with her beautiful velvet red dress, her neat hair, her bright eyes, and her glowing pale skin, and he can’t pick up his jaw from the floor. He’s never seen her more beautiful. For Jia, on the other hand, is the first time she sees him wearing a formal suit and her immediate thought is I Need to Touch That Man. So she tries to ‘correct’ the collar of his petticoat while purposely pressing herself against him, which of course, has him flustering and glancing away and nibbling his cheek. HE CAN’T PINE ANYMORE AND I HAVE NO MERCY OF HIM.
S. First anniversary + how they celebrated
I think Jia and Miraak celebrate their first anniversary a year after Something Very Bad Happens Before It Gets Better… I haven’t reached that part of their story yet, but it will be the ultimate Key Moment for their relationship. They’re going to celebrate it in Jia’s magic place called ‘Dreamgrove’, where time doesn’t exactly flow in a linear fashion… I don’t want to spoil too much, but they’re going to discover a great many things about themselves in that place…👀
T. First time dancing together
YOU KNOW WHAT, YOU ASKED ME ALL MY FAVORITE QUESTIONS, I’M SOBBING. Their first dance is going to take place in that Big Affair I mentioned to you in question P. Jia is quite decent at dancing, and it makes sense since I often think of her as fire in a human form—flames dance beautifully, don’t they? Miraak, on the other hand, has two left feet, but it’s alright, he’ll follow Jia’s lead. I have a huge The Witcher inspo for this scene, where Jia will be like: ‘You can kiss me now, in front of everyone’, ala Yennefer vibes, and GAH… I CAN’T WAIT TO WRITE IT, I’M NOT IN THE SLIGHTEST NORMAL.
🤩 - First big inspiration for writing (an author? a piece of media? a plot idea?)
answered here!
#OH MY GOSH I'M SO SORRY FOR THE RAMBLES. . . I'M LITERALLY THE WORST#look at that. . . whole essays. . .😭#i loved LOVED answering those tho. . . you made me so happy so thank you again my friend!#ask game#otp: twin flames#miraak x ldb#oc: jia#the priest and the dragoness

hi aly!! happy pride month!
i’ve seen you post about butterflies a few times and i was wondering- which species/type is your favorite?
(also i was totally inspired by your pfp frame so i did one for mine lol)
HI RAINE! :D happy pride month! your pfp looks great!!! :)
AND THANK YOU FOR ASKING ABOUT MY FAVORITE BUTTERFLY!!! i know you probably wanted a singular answer as to which one is my favorite, but i am insane af when it comes to these beautiful lil creatures so i fear i cannot choose 😭 i love them all too much! 🫶 but here is an quick summary of my top ten favorites:
here is a spicebush swallowtail, or Papilio troilus! it is commonly found in north america, it loves deciduous woods and swamps, and i’ll bet you can guess what this pretty lil butterfly’s most common host plant is! (if you guessed a spicebush, you would be correct! 🫶)
this small guy is a chalkhill blue, or a Lysandra coridon! they are found in the palearctic, they love chalky grasslands, and the female chalkhill blues are actually brown rather than blue! :)
this is a red-spotted purple, or Limenitis arthemis! they are spread all throughout north america, they like birches and willow trees, and their scientific name translates to “harbor goddess” in greek! <3
here is a mourning cloak, or the Nymphalis antiopa. this butterfly is native to eurasia and north america. it is montana’s state butterfly, it has one of the longest lifespans of any butterfly (it can live up to a year!), and it is called the camberwell beauty in england!
this is a polyura jupiter! it is found in indonesia and other islands that surround it! the larvae supposedly feed on albizia stipulata! :D
this is a Morpho aurora! it is neotropical, it is found often in the rainforests of peru and bolivia, and it is named after the roman goddess of dawn, aurora!
this is the blue mormon, or Papilio polymnestor. it is found in south india and sri lanka, it is the fourth largest butterfly in india, and it loves areas with heavy rainfall! :D
this is the eastern tiger swallowtail, or Papilio glaucus! it is native to eastern north america, the first known drawing of a north american butterfly was a drawing of this butterfly in 1587, and it gets its name from its distinctive black “tiger” stripes! :)
this is a malachite, or a Siproeta stelenes. it is a neotropical butterfly found all throughout central and northern south america, it is one of the most commonly found butterflies in south america, and it is named after the mineral malachite because of its similar bright green coloring.
and last but not least, here is a marbled white, or Melanargia galathea. this species can be found in forests clearings and meadows across most of iran, southern russia, asia minor, and europe, they are most often seen out and about during june through september, and the butterfly larva love eating grass! :)
ANYWAYS EXCUSE MY MUCH TOO LONG BUTTERFLY RANT! THANK YOU SM FOR THE ASK RAINE 😭 <3
(also, i looked for a raine butterfly cause it sounded like it could possibly exist, but there sadly isn’t one :( don’t feel too bad tho, there are some cute little mites and beetles called rain bugs and rain beetles respectively, which is semi-close to your name! :) oh and the mites are a beautiful bright red! they’re pretty cute! :])
#sorry this took so long to answer 😭🫶#i may have went a little bit overboard with the butterfly species lmao 😭#aly answers#aly’s lovely moots!#butterfly

----
Peaches, Six in a Bowl, Sarajevo -- Sandra Cisneros
If peaches had arms
surely they would hold one another
in their peach sleep.
And if peaches had feet
it is sure they would
nudge one another
with their soft peachy feet.
And if peaches could
they would sleep
with their dimpled head
on the other’s
each to each.
Like you and me.
And sleep and sleep.
------
Of Wildflowers -- Joy Sullivan
When I was young,
I heard so much about being
a child, man, woman of God
but then grew up and all
I ever wanted
was to be wildflowers,
of willow, toad, and bone,
of swallowtails, sow thistle,
and cedar, of birds.

He doesn’t notice. Or if he does, he tells himself not to. Personally, Cruor’s never been shy or reserved when it came to clothes ( or lack thereof ). But he's tried to be a little more considerate. Sometimes. Right now seemed impossible to keep his upper half covered. Just like Leo said, he didn't want to walk around with blood everywhere. Not just because of his own comfort, but most aren't as forgiving ( or nonintrusive ) as her.
A frown takes place at the thought of people similar to that asshole bothering her. "Nah, don't be. We came out of it alright anyways." As for the 'getting hurt' part... She doesn't need to know about that, or his strange ability.
Cat still in hand, he goes to plop onto the couch like suggested. Kind of bizarre to think how things wound up. What should've been a single target hunt turned into a new pet cat and having his bloodied clothes washed at some stranger's house. Wild. Cruor lets the cat explore wherever once he's settled; completely leaned back, slumped towards the edge of the couch instead of sitting straight up.
At the mention of his tattoos, he looks down — as if he'd completely forgotten about them. Cruor hadn't, he just has a habit of looking wherever pointed to. "These two, yeah." One tap at the spicebush swallowtail on the sternum, and another at the weeping willow. "This one was in New Zealand.." The jagged outline of a knife scar surrounded by a halo of shattered lines at the upper abdomen. "Dallas." An empty faced statue bust that usually has some poorly scribbled face near the right hip ( he didn't have the time to draw one on today ). "This one was.. Shit, I think Quebec?" The left end of his shorts tugs up to the mid thigh and reveal a plant man watering itself.
“Way, way too young.” She agrees with a smile, shaking her foot slightly so he can mess with the laces of her shoe. It’s another nice – and very much needed distraction from Amine pulling his shirt off. There’s an immediate flush of red in her cheeks (while mumbling ‘holy shit’) as she moves to turn the washer on, though she misses the correct cycle setting twice.
“Yeah, it sucks on this side of town. When I first moved here, people were always trying to mess with me. It’s crazy.” She gives the kitten a scratch under the chin as he’s picked up. “I’m sorry you got into a fight, but I’m glad he wasn’t hurt… or you.” Using the cat as a focal point doesn’t work now, not when he’s got him in his arms and he’s swatting at his nose and – she takes another step back, starts to close the door to hide the washer. Anything to keep her occupied.
“I think Marlo is a perfect name.” She reaches again, pets his cheek. “Not just because I came up with it, of course.” Rolling her eyes at herself, she looks back towards the living room. “We can go sit, if you want. Watch tv or whatever while your stuff washes.” Leo’s silently thanking god he didn’t have any blood on his pants or she might melt through the floor and die.
If he’s agreeable to sitting, she shoves herself into one end of the couch as much as she can. Trying to leave enough room for him and the cat without them touching. She feels like she’s been weird enough already, though if he’s noticed, he’s done a wonderful job of ignoring it.
Her head tilts curiously as she looks him over again. Eyes the tattoos. At least she can say she’s staring at them. “Those are cool. Did you get them done around here?”
#leonora rogers — interaction .#* & cruor 'amine kovac' — dialogue .#// he doesnt have the cat on bike yet! was thinking he gets that after fully adopting this lil cat

Flora, Fauna and Environment of Nan Tathren
I’ve been really enjoying my Flora, Fauna and Environment of Arda series and I wanted to do some smaller locations and ecosystems as well as more larger regions that I constantly go back and add more to. These will include both smaller parts of the areas I’ve done and new ones
(I’ll continue to do larger areas too and I’ll take requests for any and this includes the Barad Eithel request I got awhile back, I’m so sorry for the delay!)
Nan Tathren, “valley of willows”, is a vale in mid Beleriand where the River Sirion met its largest and Southernmost tributary, the river Narog. It was South of the gates of Sirion and north of the Havens. The Power of Ulmo was strong here even after Nirnaeth where the area was roamed by orcs.
In The Book of Lost Tales, it was said that all butterflies came from Nan Tathren and though this was discarded as canon, the flowery meadows of the vale were said to have lots of butterflies.
The climate was likely warm temperate with little snowfall despite seasonal changes. This was due to the influence of Ulmo who shielded the valley from harsher weather. This meant that there was something of a protective sheen around the vale with some notable differences within its borders to the surrounding regions.
The trees of Nan Tathren are not close or crowded together and elf, orc or other creature alike can easily wander through the more forested areas. Weeping willows, musk willows, and white willows as well as common and Engler’s beech trees and common ash make up the highest number of trees in the vale
In the meadows grow a wide variety of wildflowers and herbaceous plants that are home and nutrients to the many butterflies of the valley; the Apollo butterfly which feeds on white stonecrop, swallowtails which feed on rue and fennels, female orange tips with common dogwood violet, small tortoiseshell and common nettle, scarce fritillary and honeysuckle, speckled wood with annual meadow grass, dusky meadow brown, silver studded blue and rockrose, mother or pearl blue and woundwort, and green hairstreak with blue vetch, peacock butterfly with willow, dandelions and danewort, poplar admiral with poplar and aspen, clover and cape broom.
During the nighttime, moths flutter over the fragrant meadows feeding from their various sources; magpie moth with red current, meadow sweet button with meadowsweet, blood vein and sorrel, barred yellow with dog rose, common marbled carpet with strawberry,
There are more of course, this is only a small selection!
Fish are abundant in the crossing of Sirion and Narog. Marbled trout, common minnow, spiny loaches, grayling, asper, and other, stranger creatures that aren’t known to modern earth are in the protection of Ulmo’s power here. As I believe exist throughout Arda (and is supported by Tolkien’s description that ‘all creatures that ever walked the earth and many that did not’) there are species that no longer exist on earth today. Perhaps Paleoparadoxia find safety in the deep waters where the tributary meets Sirion.
Larger animals are rare here and usually only pass through, adding to the feeling and description of the vale as desolate but peaceful. Larger mammals do occasionally enter the valley to drink from one of the many clear pools along the river. Roe and fallow deer and elk cross along one or two of the fords, timber wolves shelter under the willows after an unsuccessful hunt, strange okapi like creatures blend into the trees as they sip from the water.
Smaller mammals do make their home in the valley more permanently as do birds.
Field mice, garden dormouse, flying squirrel, water vole, pine voles Kogaionon, smaller species of gray foxes, Vulpavus, the occasional Rhizosmilodon, tayra, and species of hedgehogs.
Greenish warbler, willow warbler common firecrest, dusky thrush, black and green woodpeckers, spotted nutcracker, common kingfisher, ural owl, and marbled teal being some examples of birds along with a few giant swans that take sanctuary in the reeds of the slower sections of the river,
Spiny newts, brook salamander, midwife toad, agile frog, along with wood turtle, striped neck terrapin, snake eyed lizard and green meadow snakes.

Magic Winx, Butterflix!
Butterflix is a transformation tied to nature, both plants and animals. Though it is heavily tied to the rhopalocera, better known as butterflies. A magi’s butterfly is dependent on that the magi’s homeworld. While the butterflies are not inherently magical, they were once seen as the souls of fairies who have passed. It’s predominantly earned by fairies, though witches and sorcerers have been known to achieve it as well. The transformation gives the user a better tie to nature and lets them understand it more clearly while also limiting the offensive power of their spells, trading it for a high defense. To earn it, a magi must prove themselves to be on nature’s side.
The Winx’s butterflies from left to right
Bloom - Coastal Bluetip
Stella - Southern Eclipsed
Flora - Northern Willow Nymph
Musa - Maiden’s Ballad
Tecna - Central Chrome
Aisha - Nereid’s Swallowtail
Roxy - European Peacock

Um pal? I think you made Frost and Splash More related(unless im reading the tree wrong)
@shinydmoon
I brought up my art program again to double check and do a comparison. First though, here is the chart I use to visually check if two characters are incompatible;
[ID: A family tree chart is circled. First Cousin Once Removed is circled several times and the text says: "Onestar's Exception; This is banned when 2 Grandparents are alive. I also generally avoid when possible."]
I'm trying to fix Splash and Frost in-canon because they squarely land in the Onestar's Exception. Sneezecloud and Mallownose are brothers; Sneeze is the father of Splash, Mallow is the grandfather of Frost. This makes them first cousins once removed, and because both brothers are alive, that puts them on my rewrite chopping block.
(for the record I don't ship Splash and Frost, but knowing the Erins, they are going to pull some kind of romantic drama and I would at the very least like to fix this part of it. Not to mention if Splash's brother Fognose gets with one of Frost's siblings by the end of ASC-- there's a few reasons I'm doing this.)
So I plugged them into my chart,
The only reason that Canon RiverClan is uncharacteristically "clean" as far as Clans go is because there is a missing generation fog over almost every cat between TNP and AVoS. I mapped out the entire canon family over in my Diagnosis if you would like to see that. So, unfortunately it's going to be messier than canon just by matter of logistics.
However, I always hold my Three Strict Rules true.
But anyway, you can see Canon on the left; Mallow and Sneeze are alive, and Sneeze just had his first litter with Havenpelt less than 2 years ago. It's fresh. These cats should be active family.
Compare to my Rewrite Draft 1 on the right. I did goof and make it another FCOR relationship, but the BIG difference is that Voletooth is dead near the start of OotS, long before Duskfur has Pod and Curl in AVoS.
"Is there a reason why Graymist didn't invoke the Queen's Rights?"
There is; it's because, canonically, Graymist is consistently xenophobic. She ushers her kittens away when Squilf visits, and snarls at Holly and Willow when they're saying good-bye to each other. She's often seen in aggressive roles, yowling at other Clans that RiverClan owns all the fish in the lake.
She doesn't seem like a cat who would invoke the Queen's Rights, or at the very least would still quietly pick a RiverClan honor sire.
But. Anyway.
I went ahead and swapped Sneeze's father from Voletooth to Beechfur, for now. Beech is a bit older (by about 1 - 2 years, young warrior in TNP), but not by enough to get axed under my age gap rules.
Here's RiverClan Draft 1.1 (I am also gonna update the image in my other post)
I also added the tidbit that Beechfur is the secret father of Sedgewhisker and Thistleheart of WindClan, but ultimately he chose to stay with RiverClan. It's a funny coincidence that both siblings were in HalfClan relationships because of the Great Journey.
(swallowtail 2 of windclan is getting cut, Thistleheart is taking her roles)
In another draft I might repurpose Tanglepaw and Pikepaw from Battles of the Clans or Swallowtail 2 to create an in-between generation cat with Beech or Vole for Graymist, but this is the current iteration for now.

Nevada City, California, Aria // Sharon Olds
When I sit up from sleep and swing my legs over the side of the flat
world,
then push down with my palms to heave my weight up,
the bed makes a cry, not like an animal, not like a person,
but metal taken from its underground home,
the spiral torque of an iron spring.
It isn’t true I was ever anything like an eland.
My young (I use you again here easily, my dearest ones,
as if I have no respect for human rights)
did not nurse standing up on four legs, did not tup
from a soft leather gourd between ungulate hind legs,
though I had been a leaper, back when my body took
shapes like drigs of mist above a pond fed by a
narrow long waterfall.
I can hardly believe that dancer’s willow ripple was my torso,
and I felt at home in it, I could bear its beauty,
and I knew I was born to lie down in it in a woods with another
person.
Now the heavy flesh of the years of misdirected love is beginning to
come off,
I am lopping it—rich queen rinds and collops of fat.
I am desperate to love myself, to tolerate myself,
vanity mixed in with it is fine, pride is fine, all avails.
Others who hate injustice and exterimination and murder
are willing to go into those intimate places,
a stadium of blood and excrement
to hate it directly, up close, inches from it, touching it.
When I am at my lowest, do I hate myself?
I suspect her and have contempt for her.
And except for my friends—when I’m low, do I hate everyone?
I hate the sun, which I can feel broiling my exposed surfaces.
I hate the wind, which tickles me with my own hair-tips to arouse
and madden me.
But I do not hate these old curtains in this old hotel room.
I love that they cannot move toward me on their own and hurt me.
I love that they are made of cotton lace,
I love the background scrim like thousands of tiny bee sexagons,
and the images of pelmets and swags on one curtain,
and on another, roses bulging to open,
and pineapple in succulent conifer armor,
and another with a delicate crosshatch backfround,
and flattened lace bows with wrinkled loops and corckscrew ties,
and small shields stippled with seed-pods like a lady’s escutcheon.
And I love my parea, translucent, black with white flowers,
which I draped over the dark mirror of the television screen,
moving one scree swallowtail volute at the edge
to cover the red light which means: always on;
the light which means: because we hate ourselves
we are igniting the earth.
