Movies/TV watched 2024; asterisks * are rewatches, asterisks w/question marks *? are rewatches I couldn’t remember having seen before but had a vague sense of familiarity and/or I found evidence of watching elsewhere in my archive. Struck titles were unfinished (I absolutely loved the book In Cold Blood but dozed off a bunch during the movie; Under the Skin seemed promising but I had to turn it off because I could NOT emotionally deal with the baby on the beach.)

This year I treated myself to some old weird nostalgia movies on VHS (YouTube or Internet Archive links provided when available). We have a decent collection of thrifted DVDs and we borrow a lot of movies from the library. Occasionally I’ll sign up for a month of a streaming service if there’s something ~exclusive~ we want to watch, and then we’ll end up watching whatever horror garbage is offered. Honestly, I think “meh, it was okay” was my main reaction to a lot of the movies I watched this year? Kind of a bummer.

Favorites in 2024: BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE!!!!! I just loved everything about it :D I thought it was aesthetically the right amount of Tim Burton without being *too much* Tim Burton, ya know? (Love movie environments that feel like a dark ride!) Beetlejuice is a forever favorite, one of my earliest “crushes” (proving that I have absolutely never had good taste in men & that as early as age 4 I yearned for a witty dirtbag prankster to show up and “promptly whisk [me] off from [my] ordinary life into wacky adventures in the land of the dead” [description from the box set of the animated series, yikes lmao; my other fave beginning around this time was Doctor Who lol, obvious underlying theme is obvious]). ANYway, BJ BJ was also the first movie we saw in theatres post-covid! Not necessarily due to covid-related concerns, but just like, idk, being busy and frugal homebodies. And I guess since more theatres are offering restaurant food nowadays, they’re making it more difficult to sneak food in (no bags allowed), booooo.

Other faves: Asteroid City (I’m not usually a Wes Anderson person but this was visually stunning), His House, Poor Things. The Seeding was pretty wild, if heavy-handed. Tho I kind of thought *everything* about male/female relationships in horror movies I saw this year was getting pretty heavy-handed :/ Sisters with Transistors was a cool documentary about women (Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, Wendy Carlos, Pauline Oliveros, et al.) in the early days of electronic music, dreamily narrated by Laurie Anderson (*heart-eyes*). Beatles ’64 was surprisingly okay! I *really* appreciated the interviews with people who were young Beatlemaniacs back in the ‘60s, hearing (mostly) women talk about how the Beatles represented a new way of being masculine, how liking the Beatles could provide a sense of agency for women navigating their own desires, etc. That was a cool perspective which I do not personally encounter very often in the Beatles cinematic universe. (For background: My two most recent long-term relationships have been with indie musicians who just happen to be extremely obsessed with the Beatles, so I’ve spent the past 17+ years absorbing deep dives about how great they are, and while I like many of their songs and Understand Their Position of Importance in the History of Pop/Rock/Human Culture, I just do not give a fuuuck on a personal level. But I do still begrudgingly respect my partner’s interest enough to occasionally watch a Beatles documentary with him.)

The soft ticking of the grandfather clock filled the empty lounge, rays of pale moonlight filtered into the once lively room. Glasses left where their owners had set them, some empty, some half full but most filled with dust. A thick layer of dust covered the whole room, undisturbed since the incident, since Damien and Celine went missing, since William lost his mind, since Eliza had been trapped in this void.

The amount of adventures Eliza had been on, how many alter egos she had to create with even the slightest hope she'd get to see her friends again. It felt..pathetic. She was clinging onto the past like she must not forget, she could not forget. Actor would not let her, she was cursed to an eternity of suffering, to watch as her actions either killed people or saved people. How many people had she killed as the Captain of The Invincible II. Did she truly hurt that guys feelings by saying no to his marriage proposal...The guilt ate Eliza up, and it wasn't like these adventures were just do it once and that was that, nope she had to relive all her nightmares. All because of that bastard Actor. And what made it worse, she knew when it was due to happen again.

The woman laid back and stared into the void, before she closed her eyes and woke up on the Invincible II. Of course, this nightmare again a sigh escaped her lips as she sat up and got dressed slicking her short hair back. Usually Engineer Mark would come and wake her up with a coffee, but as the clock ticked on there was no knock...strange. Eliza poked her head out of her room, the hallway was dimly lit and abandoned. There were cobwebs? Stranger..a few cautious steps forward and Eliza was outside her room. It was deadly silent, eerie Eliza would go far as to say torturously silent. As she took a few more cautious steps, dust spoofed up from under her boots, so it had been abandoned for awhile? No..this was all wrong. Not that it mattered, as she opened the door to the bridge instead of consoles and monitors it was a disco room? Now this was definitely wrong, not that she had time to think as she was spun around and kissed.

Elizas eyes widened gently as the familiar scent of whiskey and cigars filled her nose. William..he was actually here?! But his outfit, a far cry from the prim and proper hunting uniform Eliza was use to, was a bright burst of pink and yellow something she never thought her husband would wear. As he pulled away, he grinned and held her face gently. Madness and love swirled in his eyes, his voice still soft as ever as he spoke to her "I knew i would find you sugar" A new nickame..what else had changed about her husband she didn't know. Eliza teared up and pulled him in for another kiss, filled with longing, lust and love. After so long...she had him back and she was not letting him go...but then, even as she pulled away realization hit her. This was more than likely a cruel prank by Actor. She couldn't fall for it. She refused to believe it, it hurt but she couldn't believe it. Wilfords eyes scanned her body language "Sugar.."

She shook her head and covered her ears. No it was just a prank! Just a prank! Had to be! He couldn't be here and yet be so different! Her husband! Her William! She had been there for him when Celine had to break it off with him, she had been there whenever he and mark fought or at least the aftermath. But now..he was so brightly coloured, childish! A sob escaped her lips as Wilford knelt down and pulled her into his chest. "Just let me go William...i know your not even the same person!" Wilfords heart broke a those words and he made her look up at him

"I am real, I am here sugar...I will always find you.." He wouldn't attempt to explain his identity right now, first he had to get Eliza and himself out of this godawful place Actor and put her in. Even with his cheery, airhead personality he picked her up and managed to summon a portal that would allow both of them to leave, and maybe she would find some real peace and rest after the long hellish living nightmare his wife had been through, and he hoped that goddamn detective didn't find them.

Book/Movie Diary: What I watched/read 12/2023

The Deer King: An anime that is something you would watch if you are a fan of Princess Mononoke largely for the style, and if you liked The Phantom Menace and the Fellowship of the Rings for the lore and vibes. Unfortunately, I have been reading up on all the Drakkon/Coinless Jason by @ajgrey9647 and that means I spent the whole movie expecting the stoic protagonist and pretty Doctor to beat the shit out of each other or devolve into sloppy makeout sessions. 4/5

The Man Who Came Down the Attic Stairs, by Celine Loup: A beautiful not-a-memoir in graphic novel format that the artist/author wrote as a what-if scenario covering the effects of pregnancy in the pre-War 1900s; complete with post-partum depression. It's smooth as silk with the art in stunning black and white. 4/5

Manga Classics' King Lear, by Richard Appignanesi: An interesting and visually lovely concept, resetting Shakespeare's story into a Native American vs Colonial landscape. I really wanted to like it, but I felt like it really missed the mark? 2.5/5

Komi Can't Communicate vol. 1, by Oda Tomohito: I finally get to read the first gn in the series and was not disappointed in finding that, yes, it was Tadano who made the first move, and Komi is ADORABLE. 4/5

Commute, by Erin Williams: An examination of being a woman who has experienced many assaults and the results thereof through alcoholism, poor dating choices, dissociation, and finally, motherhood. excerpts I had to write down include: -"What's your part in this abuse?" "That I kept getting drunk?" "You kept going to the gas station for oranges. They don't sell oranges at the gas station. If you want oranges, you go the grocery store. I don't know QUITE how to feel about the art style as a GN. 4/5

Stitches: A Graphic Memoir, by David Small: Sort of a twilight examination on generational trauma and mental illness through the youngest son of a closet lesbian with multiple health issues and a radiologist in a time when it was believed that x-rays could also cure rather than just provide an image of internal problems. The spooky art style made me very uncomfortable, but I quite liked it. 5/5

Literary Witches, by Taisia Kitaiskaia: A collection of witchy femme writers in a poetic presentation, done much like spellwork used through epithets. 5/5

Searching for Bobby Fischer: Just as good, and all the more better, than I thought it would be. It had taken me DECADES to finally see this on DVD after seeing part of it ONCE on VHS when I was tiny and couldn't really remember it. It's the kind of family movie that really isn't made anymore. It's quiet, it's contemplative, it's HONEST. I LOVED IT. 6/5

Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space; by Amanda Leduc: Actually uses both memoir and popular culture as fairly good references to the reality of perfectionism and "the other." It used Disney, changelings, "The Bloody Chamber" and her own medical history. Must take note of this for later because it is very good. 5/5

Spit Three Times, by Davide Raviati: Yet another graphic memoir, this one laying out the growth of a teen/teens in Italy around the 1980s(?), with the author being of Romani descent. It had a lot of stuff I couldn't differentiate between euphemism and actual truth, but I'm pretty sure the extremely mentally ill girl insisting on sexual activity and getting beaten almost to death until she gave birth to a baby that a drunken teenage boy had to deliver on the fly was pretty real. I really did not understand a lot of what happened, but there was one scene that felt very honest apart from the incredibly violent one: "The only person I know who could beat off while doing the backstroke." >> THIS. This was so weird, and yet something teen boys just DO. 3-4/5

Snow White: A Graphic Novel, by Matt Phelan: A retelling of the old tale with a twist. The setting in 1920s New York, the wicked queen is an extremely popular flapper on Broadway, the dead king as a rich mogul that survived the Black Thursday crash, Snow is a boarding school girl back to see the will. We see butchers, detectives, private eyes, and the seven are all street orphans that DO chase the witch down to death. The Macy's Window was an especially nice touch. 4/5

Komi Can't Communicate vol. 2, by Oda Tomohito: -Yamai IS a total psycho at first blush, omg. Poor Tadano, he did not deserve this crap. -The Ramen Chef that shares Komi's disorder must get on GREAT with Agari. -Wow. I was not expecting Tadano to be THAT embarrassing in middle school. -Agari being both a dog-girl and an awesome, honest food critic was a nice touch. -Najimi is VERY cheap. -The dress show was not something I thought I'd see, but I'm not at all surprised that Tadano was always going to be the best choice. 5/5

Komi Can't Communicate vol. 3, by Oda Tomohito: -Chiarai, Sonoda, and Shinobino might be incredibly awkward and can't NOT end up being queer somewhere down the line, but at least they're honest with their judgement of the girls (plus Najimi) in bathing suits. -Both Komi & Tadano look awesome in yukatas. -Komi alone on the playground was so wholesome I wanna scream. -No surprise that Komi is great with babies, but it was still cute to see. -Komi continues to wear the dress Tadano picked out EVERYWHERE. 5/5

• Born : 28/6/1893

• Deceased: 10/10/1927

He died at age 34, but in immortal years, he’s 130 years old.

• He’s a drug & alcohol addict (it doesn’t impact his health anymore due to his organism being dead already)

• used to be most famous during 1920’s

• As if his mental health wasn’t ruined enough, the house entity, the house Mark inherited after his abusive parents, made his matters worse — making him paranoid, neglecting his wife, Celine.

• He died of su!c!de attempt to frame his friend, William the Colonel, for stealing Celine away from him.

• The Plier family is mostly artistic — father is a dramatist, mother is an opera singer. Their son, Mark, is an actor.

• Besides acting, Mark also plays piano. But lately, he fails to participate in any worthy or very entertaining/interesting projects.

• A miserable father that doesn’t even know the names of his children.

• He’s a closeted queer, willing to “experiment” with any gender.
