Maxwell (AKA William Carter) is one of the six playable Characters that are not unlocked via Experience in the Don't Starve base game and one of the playable Characters in Don't Starve Together (DST). The de-facto antagonist of the base game, if freed at the end of Adventure Mode, he returns to his dapper human form and is sent into the Constant as another survivor.

In addition to the Codex Umbra, which allows him to fragment his mind, Maxwell starts off with his own fighting gear and valuable items. Being a dapper fellow, his Sanity constantly increases over time. To make up for that, Maxwell only has a maximum Health of 75 points. Maxwell's playstyle revolves around his Sanity, being able to manage it very easily, and with the aid of his book.

Can you do another Wilba agere thing for me please? I am also curious about what other survivors you think use littlespace aka agere. Could you tell me in the post before the story?

(I think Wilson's an age regressor. My brain always latches onto one character and makes them an age regressor for each fandom I'm in and for this it chose Wilson. Willow also seems very much like an age regressor. She doesn't fit in really as another "child" character but it also seems like they were trying to pass her off as a child (at least to me) by having her video be set in an orphanage and her teddy bear. I have a general headcanon that Maxwell is still attached to the identity of William Carter and my agere addition to it is that he doesn't like being called "Maxwell" while regressed because of it.)

"What are you two doing?" Wickerbottom asks.

"Tea party!" The two cheer in unison.

"Will there be any other guests besides you two?"

"Wendy's gonna join us!" Wilson said, pointing to one of the spots.

"Yes! Webber also told us that he'd be joining." Wilba added on.

"Hmm. Do you have room for one more? I would love to join you." The two littles gasped. Wilson quickly cleared a spot for her.

I'm still tweaking some things based on my dev editor's guidance, but the romantasy WIP (which now has a final title and new acronym🥳: TSAF) has a pretty small cast, making it easier on me to choose a favorite side character 😂 Sir William Maxwell (aka Sir Bestie) is such an interesting and sweet character, though I can't lie. He definitely surprised me through the course of TSAF 👀

khione 'kie' goossens - more commonly known as freeze girl or frostbite but will go by skadi later in life - is a third generation superhero. this makes her a legacy. just like will stronghold and warren peace.

her dad - leander aka icicle - has cryokinesis abilities and her mom - marina, aka thalassa - has hydrokinesis abilities and she has inherited both. though not many people know this as she leans heavily on the cryo as per their instructions.

"because no one will want you if they figure out that you can bend their blood, kiki."

(it is something she's heard many times before: "no one will want you if you do / say / think xyz, kiki!")

her parents have plotted out kie's entire life for her from start to finish and she hates it. hates them for it.

(she can come home with whomever, so long as they're not pyrokinetic.)

because they hate superheroes like warren, who wields the opposite element. because they hate the fact that she's head over heels in love with him.

because they hate everyone and everything they can't control.

kie loves ice skating and snow sculpting and swimming and biology and thankfully her hobby's fall under the banner of keeping her super skills sharp as per her parents insistence because she wouldn't know what she would have done otherwise.

it is something she's grateful for because during her first year at sky university, baron battle escapes the maximum security prison he was kept in, rampages through maxville and kidnaps ethan bank - the resident boy genius who can turn himself into liquid.

the group comes together and they get ethan back but he's never quite the same afterwards.

(zach is the one to coin the term the stronghold seven as a joke but it sticks.)

aside from this, her parents' marriage crumbles in the wake of the revelation that zachary "zach" braun-springer is her half brother. and though it pained her, kie kept it a secret (because her parents asked her to) until mr medulla - who got offered a job at sky u and took it - fed his class a self made truth serum for an experiment.

during her second year at university, kie gets kidnapped by katherine baxter. katherine has sound based powers and a twin brother named michael she'd move mountains for. her brother is still in lockup for aiding baron battle the year before.

the stronghold seven (or, well, six, in this case) comb through maxville until they figure out that katherine keeps kie in a wellness center in the richer part of town: maxwellness. katherine - specializing in sound wellness - used to work there.

the group saves kie in the nick of time. had they been any later, she would have died. it takes months for kie to get back to her former power-level and herself and she grapples with this more than she cares to admit.

during her third year, josie stronghold dies. ms stronghold has been more of a mother to kie than her own mother has ever been. and so she goes to the funeral and grieves. (she will never forget will's haunted eyes and steve's anguished scream). during her last year, mr medulla reveals himself to be an undercover villain and baron battle strikes once more but manages to evade capture once again.

he's still out there, to this day, doing what royal pain did, but better.

after kie graduates from sky u, the stronghold seven is officially formed: the team consists of it's leader and namesake, will stronghold (super strength and flight); layla williams (botanokinesis); warren peace (pyrokinesis and invulnerability); magenta lewis (shapeshifter who keeps her human strength even while shifted into small critters); zach braun-springer (photon manipulation); ethan banks (liquification, genius) and khione goossens (cryokinesis and hydrokinesis).

He's gone from Sisyphus to Lazarus

"He's gone from Sisyphus to Lazarus" is the phrase Wendy utters in Don't Starve together if Maxwell aka William Carter resurrects someone. And as soon as I found out about it, I just couldn't get it out of my head, it's like this... it's an amazing thing, so unlike the quotes of other characters, that I think about it too much. And I'll make you too.

Wendy, a girl with very dubious views for a twelve-year-old or-whatever-her-age-is and a predilection for quoting various kinds of literature. We are interested in the latter today. And she says about Maxwell "He's gone from Sisyphus to Lazarus" when he gets a resurrecting heart for the player. And what struck me so deeply in this phrase that I have not been able to get it out of my head for the third month? Well, first of all, she compares Maxwell's past with Sisyphus, and Maxwell is actually very, VERY mephistopheles-coded. Judge for yourself - in the text of the game itself, he is called a "demon". We have art with him and Wilson, where he hands the exhausted hero an apple - what is it if not an allusion to original sin? Several characters turn to him, although he still appears to the player as an NPC, as a "demon". Wigfried in one of the quotes (the attacker) says "I sense Loki's influence in ...(nickname)" and Loki is a character kinda related to Mephistopheles, they basically qualitatively similar, and Wortox, literally a demon, tells Maxwell "You have no power over me" (although, this, of course, is already far-fetched), and in the end, even his name is a reference to a thought experiment called "Maxwell's demon".

However, they say that outwardly he is based on Woland from the master and Margarita, although our antagonist also has the most obvious features of Mephistopheles - both a charismatic grin and sharp, angular facial features. "....growth was <...> high <..> he was wearing an expensive gray suit, foreign shoes in the color of the suit. Looks like he's in his forties. The mouth is kind of crooked. Clean-shaven. The eyebrows are black, but one is higher than the other. In a word, a foreigner." – there is some similarity, you must agree, even a part about a foreigner, given the fact that William is an immigrant from England, and among the hypotheses of Ivan Bezdomny (his pen name means "homeless") and Berlioz about the origin of Woland, there was also "An Englishman," Bezdomny thought, "look, and it's not hot for him in gloves" - but Woland in turn is also the image of Mephistopheles, which Bulgakov does not even hide, only a black poodle on the head of a cane is worth something, so we find ourselves at this point anyway. Yes, a trickster, yes, "part of that pover which eternally wills evil and eternally works good," but still, a demon is an image with a clearly negative connotation. And it is all the more surprising to see a comparison of his past with Sisyphus. Sisyphus is a character in Greek mythology, certainly not a positive one - a sinner who is forced to roll a stone uphill forever as punishment for his actions - he, according to one of the most common versions, chained the god of death Thanatos(or even Hades), thus defeating death itself, and stopping the death of people all over the globe for some time, and after his own death, with the help of cunning and deception, he returned back from the kingdom of Hades to earth, for which he eventually paid. And yet, remembering Sisyphus, we do not remember his actions during his lifetime - because, strictly speaking, the version of the myth that I have given is only one of several, there are several more where the actions of Sisyphus are described much more... cruel and socially unacceptable, I would say - for example, in another, less popular version, Sisyphus received his punishment for committing rape, but somehow Sisyphus in culture is primarily a symbol of hard, endless, fruitless work and cruel torment - there is a stable expression "Sisyphean labor" existing for a reason. Comparing someone with Sisyphus, we almost say what we feel for this person... pity? sympathy? And it's somehow very beautiful and touching, in my opinion. As you can see, such a character as Sisyphus is surprisingly far from the already familiar Maxwell-demon-Mephistopheles bundle, mentioned by other characters every now and then, which is simply amazing if you think about it a little longer. We see that Wendy characterized Maxwell, the Maxwell who was on the throne of shadows - if we consider this phrase of hers as a metaphor for all his being in the Constant- in a very peculiar way. In general, I must say, Wendy is an amazingly astute child - for example, her phrase about chess pieces, where she says about the queen "She holds the true power, here", and about the king "Alas, the king is but a figurehead, at best", very well reflects the situation with the rulers of the Constant, and such there are many examples.

How did he get his powers: When his facility exploded he was coated in Mutagen that was mixed with spider DNA along with Reptile DNA

Allies: Officer Z, Jane Watkins, Claws Henderson, Kai Henderson, Dr Fredrick Klungo Sr, Charlie Emily (they knew each other in college).

Enemies: Afton Bio Tech (he has had many clashes with them), Bluescar (during one of his clashes with Afton Bio Tech Bluescar killed one of Spider Reptile's sidekicks), Elizabeth Afton (he hates her guts for the unethical experimentation), William Afton (Afton killed his great aunt Cassidy during the missing children incident)

Occupation: Biologist

Dr Peter Fredrickson has a long history of family members studying in the scientific fields mostly biology. His Great Grandfather Dr Maxwell Fredrickson was a medical scientist . Peter wanted to follow his family legacy as the greatest scientists in the world.

However on the night of November 5th 2006 there was a miscalculation on one of the reactors in his laboratory which caused an explosion he survived because he was coated in the mutagen along with spider DNA and reptile DNA.

Peter shared his findings with the world scientist community and also published a book about his amazing survival. Dr Peter Fredrickson sometimes visits the dragon masters tech academy for the gifted and talented at the behest of his former lab partner Dr Gill as a guest speaker giving students an insight on genetics and biology.

When Dr Fredrickson meets the flock they first ask him if he was the person that is often referred to as Spider-Reptile. He is a bit nervous at first but when the Flock says that they are friends with Officer Z. Dr Fredrickson admits that he is Spider-Reptile.

He asks the Flock why they were looking for him and when he hears about the school in Death Valley did to them he is outraged knowing that the man who took the life of his great aunt is still out there and is now conducting unethical experimentation on children.

When he also finds out that Jane and Officer Z are aware of the situation he decides to make a faction dedicated to protecting the flock calling it the protectors of the flock.

Lament no. 1

Love is such a strange thing. It's born in the most unordinary way. It appears seemingly from nothing, yet it causes us to act so strongly. It's such a curious disease that plagues us all in one way or another. Whether through jealousy, greed, contentment, or even pride, it finds us all. It creeps up, and suddenly, you find yourself smitten with someone you barely know or, possibly, someone you thought you hated. If you're lucky, though, love will be kind and let you love the one you always wanted to love. That man or woman you've wished for will smile, and you will know it's right, and love will take your hand and theirs. But if you are truly lucky, love will overlook you. It will find you too worthy or unworthy for its schemes and plans. And most can only hope to be so lucky.

If you were to ask if I have been in love, I'd be a fool to lie and say I hadn't. May it be only twice, but it's felt like countless loves and sorrows have passed me by.

She was my first and I wish was my last. Her eyes were never dull, but I suppose every man says that about the woman he loves most. Her cherry red lips would smile against that soft snow-like skin, inviting me into the embrace I needed far too much. No man deserves a woman so sweet and caring and kind, especially no man like myself. I treated her the best I could but never able to match her enthusiasm and effort. I was no strong man fit for that strong woman. I still am not. She needs me not, but I need her. Alas I will get by as I did before her. Or at least I am trying.

He was the next and hopefully the last. It's strange what love has done to me here. He taught me many things. Hate can turn into love, I say, but sometimes love into hate. And sometimes both. Sometimes even sworn enemies can fall in love just to rush at the other with a knife as if nothing had happened. Even that fool knows that. Perhaps that's why he avoids our love. He knows. He's scared. No doubt, I'm afraid too, but of that and more. I don't even know if it is right for a man to love a man, but what choice have I got? I can suffer alone, or I can suffer in my man's arms. The choice seems rather hard, but after a second of thinking, I've come to decide I'd pick the latter. Yet still, I wonder when our relationship will return to its rivalry. I pray it not be soon, though perhaps it's best to get it over with.

Dare not I say I deserve to feel such bliss that is love whether with man or woman. All I feel I deserve is the same as the next man, and what does he deserve? I couldn't answer. I am only a simple man pondering the sin which is love. Maybe someday mankind will find a way to eradicate love, simplifying the human experience. But nay, that day won't be soon, for we are all far too in love to look past our own noses. A perfect life could be at our fingertips, but no matter what, we would pick those we love. Strength or weakness, I couldn't say, but the dedication that is love is almost admirable. Almost.

FIXING SISTER

1916

Fixing Sister is a four-act play by Lawrence Whitman (aka William Hodge). It was originally produced by Lee Shubert starring Mr. Hodge. 

‘Fixing Sister’ tells how a devoted brother outwits a headstrong sister who has been carried away by the temptations of luxury, title-hunting, and bridge whist gambling, in the midst of the gay society life of the metropolitan rich. As a result of her foreign travels, she has almost annexed a foreign nobleman of untested lineage. Her brother. John Otis, a representative American of a shrewd and humorous sort,  learning of his sister’s peril, hastens to New York from Kansas City. It Is his native common sense and shrewdness which effect a not sudden, but finally very effective, cure, including staging a police raid at her bridge party. He also rescues his own sweetheart, a tantalizingly Independent sort of American girl, from the wiles and the guiles of New York society and foreign nobility.

All four acts take place in New York City.

Bridge whist is a card game popular in the early 20th century. It was derived from whist with the additional rules that the players would take turns as dummy and that the trump suit would be deliberately chosen (including the option not to have one) on each deal rather than random. 

"Next Thursday night will be ‘police night' at Maxine Elliott's Theater, when the members of the police department gambling squad will attend in a body to see the performance of William Hodge in ‘Fixing Sister,' in order to enjoy the spectacular police raid of a gambling party, which furnishes an exciting climax to the third act.” ~ EVENING STAR

The somewhat odd title was one of a dozen considered by Hodge. It was originally announced as The Social Climbers, but that seemed too similar to Clyde Fitch’s 1901 play The Climbers.  

Fixing Sister opened in Atlantic City at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on January 16, 1916. From there, it traveled to Wilmington DE, Altoona PA, Pittsburgh PA, and Boston MA.    

After Beantown (Boston), Hodge and company went to the Motor City (Detroit) before returning to Boston’s Majestic, where business was brisk.

“As an indication of the volume of business being done, it was necessary, on Ash Wednesday, to place the orchestra on the stage and sell seats in the pit usually occupied by the musicians.”

In mid-March 1916, Hodge made a formal announcement confirming the rumors that he was indeed playwright Lawrence Whitman. At the end of March, Hodge took on a second play in his downtime: Hobson’s Choice at the Wilbur. He requested that Mr. Shubert cancel one of his Fixing Sister matinees so that he might perform in Hobson’s, but Shubert declined. Instead, he arranged a special benefit of Hobson’s at an alternate time. 

Although the above item appears to be an article, it is actually a paid advertisement! Do not send Miss Maxwell-Conover stray cats!

The Boston engagement finally came to an end on April 22, 1916. Although Broadway seemed the next logical step, the play moved to Maine through the end of the month. Hodge then retired to his summer home on Long Island to be with his wife and three small children, looking forward to bringing the play to Broadway in the new season. 

Getting the play back on its feet, Hodge chose Pittsburgh, returning to the Alvin, where the play initially enjoyed a brief stay. 

Fixing Sister opened on Broadway at Maxine Elliott’s Theatre (109 West 39th Street) on October 4, 1916.

“Early in the play the audience is let into the secret. The onlooker is taken into the confidence of the leading character and the game is won. The audience plays the rest of the piece. The interest and enthusiasm is so alive that it comes in waves to me across the footlights. Such a play is bound to be a delight to both the folk who play it and those who are entertained by it.” ~ WILLIAM HODGE

Hodge’s character, John Otis, is from Kansas City, Missouri (aka the ‘Show Me’ State)

“Interest is sustained as long as [Hodge] is on the stage, making droll remarks about everything in general in his inimitable manner, but it lags perceptibly when the other characters are depended upon to keep things going.” ~ BROOKLYN LIFE

In early November, the production cleverly addressed rumors that Hodge would close the New York production and tour. A week later, the play was extended, selling advance tickets for as far ahead as New Year’s. 

Despite this, Hodge packed his tents and moved the play to Chicago a week before Christmas. It ran on Broadway for 85 performances.
