EPILOGUE: Bubs has a long day... -_-

Bubblegum Cookie woke up very suddenly from a dream about...

"What was it? I swear I was telling myself to remember it."

They take a few minutes trying to remember their dream, before giving up and beginning their morning stretches.

After they were done with an early stretching, they walked out of the admittedly messy room and closed the door. After all, they don't want anyone to think they're a slob. They pass by the others' rooms, closing the doors of those who didn't when getting out (specifically Crunchy Chip and Espresso) before walking out to the kitchen/dining room, yawning because of the early morning.

“Hi, Cream Wolf...” Bubs went over to the large dog to pet it, it’s been really calm in their presence, for some reason. Bubs had a smile on their face as the large creature began purring while they pet it.

“Bubblegum Cookie, do not try to weaken my brother-in-arms!” Crunchy Chip said, raising his voice at them for even trying.

“I’m just giving him headpats, Chip...” Bubs answered quietly, too focused on rubbing the ears of the soft puppy...

“Chip?! What is THAT supposed to mean?!”

“Crunchy Chip Cookie, please, calm down...” Wildberry said monotonously and calmly, as he usually does. “Bubblegum Cookie, would you like to eat breakfast?”

“I’d love to!” They greeted the Cream Wolf good morning and went to the table, then wondered where GingerBrave, Financier, Clotted Cream, Espresso, and Madeleine were.

“They’re having a meeting, and GingerBrave insisted to join them.” Crunchy Chip answered.

“Oh.”

“You know, the boy doesn’t need to be kept on tabs at all times.” Wildberry shares to the worried cookie.

“What do you mean, Wildberry?”

“What I mean, is that, clearly, he can handle himself, and especially in an environment like our current one.” Bubs looks around... and... they suppose there isn’t a dangerous atmosphere in the ship...

“Y’know what...? You’re right. The kid doesn’t need to be smothered by me like this..."

“Why do you act like his personal guardian?” Crunchy Chip then asks, “And I don’t mean because of your job. Why do you protect him to such an extent?”

“...” They were silent. They didn’t expect a question like this...

“Well... you both know I’m an ex-knight... I’ll... tell you why.”

They shared to the two understanding Cookies at the other side of the table about the heartache, the tragedy, the trauma that they’ve had to endure for such a long time... how it felt like not one person would remember them, especially the now-fallen kingdom they had failed to protect...

They pause, then take a deep breath, and explain how GingerBrave found them.

It was a dark night... another feast of a dead carcass... another fire to be burnt... another day alone... They were running low on materials...

Awoo!

“A beast? At this time of night?” Bubs was too tired to even stand up, so they grabbed Hunter’s Gear from behind them, deployed it’s rifle mode, and began scoping the area where the howl came from...

Suddenly, a beast behind them, sneaking up on the tired Cookie lunged at them, biting at their back, trying to strike their neck.

“G-get off of me!” Bubs threw the beast off of them, then pointed the barrel down it’s throat, shooting it. Just then, more beasts appeared, and Bubs began shooting around them... except, these were smart creatures, and thanks to the hunter’s exhaustion, they became confused and sporatic about targeting the hounds hiding and running around the bushes, which then used the confusion to their advantage, taking turns swiping and scratching at the hunter, who managed to kill two of the pack. Eventually, Bubblegum Cookie knelt down and placed their hands on the ground, tired and weakened, their vision getting blurry as the hounds surround them...

... This is the end of the last Cookie from the Grapefruit Kingdom...

“Quick...”

...

“...e got them...”

...

“... badly hurt, do y...”

...

When Bubs awoke, they were lying down on a soft bed. ‘Wait... I should be dead...’

“Hey, they’re waking up...” A young boy’s voice said, worriedly, and when Bubs opened their eyes, they saw 5 Cookies, all looking over them, the smallest, and they assume, the youngest of the group, whom had custard yellow hair and a young prince get-up, said happily, “Yes! I knew my healing powers would be able to heal them up, Strawberry Cookie!”

“Custard Cookie III, you did amazing!” The girl, Strawberry Cookie apparently, said, proud of the smaller Cookie. She was wearing a large pink hoodie with a strawberry mask to cover her face, while carrying a green bag behind her. There was also a tall, and seemingly the oldest of them all, had hair as red as chili, and seemed to be a bandit based on her outfit, a small boy with a wizard robe and hat, as well as a large white scarf that covers his face and a long stick with a charged candy rock at the end of it. And also, a brown-haired boy with a single white streak in his hair, and three skull buttons on his overall boring shirt.

“... You... rescued me?”

“Of course! Any Cookie is welcome here!” The brown-haired and simple Cookie asked, who apparently was holding a strangely magical cane, “By the way, what’s your name?”

“Bubblegum Cookie... and you are?”

“I’m GingerBrave! The small prince over here is Custard Cookie III, and he’s been working so hard on healing you!” The small prince waved at Bubs proudly, who weakly waved back.

“This is Strawberry Cookie and this is Wizard Cookie. They heard what was happening and went to protect you.” Strawberry waved shyly, while Wizard only bowed his head.

“And finally, this is Chili Pepper Cookie! She’s the one who carried you here!” She seemed to be curious about Bubs, but was trying to keep it to herself for a bit.

“Thank you...”

“No problem! We Cookies gotta stick together!” Brave said, both for comfort and to tell them that it’s okay to stay here in the kingdom for as long as they want. Bubs gladly accepts, feeling like they’re supposed to be dead and somehow given an afterlife.

“Thanks.”

“Besides, everyone deserves to live.”

Bubs didn’t really agree with that sentiment...

There was silence, for a few seconds... before Wildberry, of all people, spoke.

“Bubblegum Cookie... is this the absolute truth?”

“Heh... why the question?” Bubblegum Cookie answered with their own question, “What would I gain lying about something you could guess?” They took a sip of their coffee, much to the concern seen on both Cookies’ faces.

“Good morning, Bubblegum Cookie, Wildberry Cookie, Crunchy Chip Cookie.” Suddenly, that silky voice of the Republican Consul had wrung into the room. The group of Cookies who went into a meeting earlier had entered the surface of the ship, GingerBrave hugging Bubblegum Cookie as a good morning, and Espresso and Madeleine quietly speaking with one another about something Bubs couldn’t really hear.

“Hey, Brave. What were you all talking about in that meeting?” Bubs asked the boy who just got here.

“Just some general stuff like how far our destination still is and if our route there won’t be blocked, what we’ll plan to do when we land, y’know, boring stuff,” GingerBrave explained, tired from the number of things he just couldn’t understand, to which Bubs just found the boy cute, and ruffled his short hair.

Suddenly, Ser Financier Cookie approaches Bubblegum Cookie, who asks them, “Bubblegum Cookie, are you okay with today’s training session?”

Bubs nods and continues eating. Then asks her, “Have you eaten, by the way?”

“No, I haven’t.” Brave then moved to the other side of Bubs and told her,

“Then sit down and eat, Financier Cookie! There’s plenty of food for all of us!”

Ser Financier smiles slightly and sits down next to them, eating breakfast and chatting- er, well, having people talk at her, while she answers very little.

From his room, Clotted Cream Cookie could hear clashing weapons and grunts from the training room. Must just be the others... He sat with nothing else to do, so he decided to visit whoever must be sparring. They must be having quite the session to be this loud.

He enters the room, and he immediately takes a step back as something, or rather, someone, dashes towards the left. It was a black and purple blur, and when he looked, there, a jacketless Bubblegum Cookie is mercilessly striking at Financier Cookie, who is blocking each strike grace. Clotted Cream Cookie’s face warms with syrup as he looks at them...

“Come on, Bubs! You’ve got this!!!” The young voice of GingerBrave yelled to cheer on his guardian... Clotted Cream supposes that whoever gave the role of guardian to Bubblegum Cookie was very smart...

The match was fierce, Crunchy Chip Cookie was yelling as he tried to coach Bubblegum Cookie, meanwhile Ser Madeleine Cookie was showing his support of a fellow Paladin. Espresso Cookie was nowhere to be seen, which means he must still be working... Wildberry Cookie is here, though, quietly observing the two’s match. Clotted Cream Cookie sits down and watches this match, not really sure of who he should root for.

Bubs could feel the adrenaline as they fought against the Paladin... Financier’s shown many many times throughout their time in the ship that she won’t be easy to win against, and with how rusty Bubs had been in combat, it took them a while to even be able to barely get a stalemate against her. The crowd watching them isn’t really helping, but at least some of them are here to support them both.

‘Wait, is that Clotty?’ Bubs realizes as they blow a bubble around them to predict another light slash, and, strangely, feels the need to win against her. Well, maybe the crowd’s getting to them...

Beating Financier was like finding a needle in a giant’s belly, you literally have to jump in head-first to do it.

Thankfully, Bubs has been taking mental notes of certain parts of Financier’s fighting style... for example, her footwork is amazing, but against foes that can jump high or run away fast? She seems to be having some difficulty... so Bubs has been abusing that by keeping space between them, then taking pot shots or setting up traps for her, until she uses her magic ability or closes the space between them.

Financier must have caught that, though, since now, she’s cornering Bubs into a corner... Bubs can catch up with Financier’s attacks, but who knows for how long.

“Come on, Bubblegum Cookie!”

“You can take her!”

“Ser Financier Cookie, show them the might of a paladin!”

Their back-and-forthing of their weapons became so intense that both Financier’s sword and Bubs’ Hunter’s Gear get thrown away from both of them, and the two use fisticuffs instead. Bubs is not losing this time!

Clotty seemed concerned, asking very worriedly, “When do they stop fighting?”

“Usually around the time one of them admits defeat.” GingerBrave said, nonchalantly, which wasn’t very comforting for Clotty.

Bubs had to do something, so they began tripping up Financier with some bubbles. They’d protect Bubs from any attack Financier throws at them, and when it pops, they can send Financier’s attack (which are her legs or arms) anywhere they want, leaving her open for a sort of counter.

Financier’s not one to quit, though, and pushes through the tricky tactics Bubs is giving them. Eventually, after another hit of hers gets redirected, it was her left hook, which Bubs bubbles and pops towards them before dodging, clearly ready to attack. What they didn’t expect was Financier’s fast leg work and a kick to the back, resulting in them landing onto Finn’s forearm, which then quickly locks onto their neck.

‘Shit! She’s chokeholding me!’ Bubs tried to squirm out of her arms, only to fall to the floor, their neck still being strangled by Financier.

Financier wrapped her other arm and legs around Bubs, making sure they couldn’t escape, which makes Bubs tap-out. They take a long and heavy breath as Financier finally lets them go.

“Apologies for the roughness. You’ve difinitely improved, Bubblegum Cookie.” Financier said, holding a hand our for them to take, which they do, and sheepishly stand up.

“What did they... teach you in the Academy? I’ve gone through grueling amounts of training and you beat me this easily.”

“Well, this is what you asked me for, when you suggested we’d spar, is that not correct?”

“I suppose. It is honestly a good idea to learn from a better fighter.”

“The fact you can keep up with me, and even strategize during combat shows you are worthy and capable of beating me at some point.”

“Thanks.” Bubs suddenly got a big hug from GingerBrave, who worriedly asks them if they are alright. They give him a thumbs-up, before limping to get an ice pack.

“That was... splendid...” Clotty spoke, a little flustered... “I mean, you lost, but... you’re clearly a great fighter. Were you one of the best in your kingdom?”

“Tch, not even close... my teachers and fellow students-in-training were definitely better... It’s a miracle how I even got to be a knight and spy, even if just for 4 years...” Bubs says the last part with just a hint of sadness, before ignoring it, and grabbing an ice pack to their wounds.

“Oh, allow me.”

“You mean, allow one of your creepy tentacles?”

“No, I geuninely mean me.” Clotty then takes the ice pack and lightly presses it against Bubs’ skin, making them wince a bit.

“Ow... Financier says I should take a break. But I know it’s just because she doesn’t want me to win our spars.” They joke, and Clotty chuckles.

Then, Clotty, in a playful manner, said, “Ser Financier Cookie, did you hear what they said?”

“Clearly, our track record shows that you still haven’t. 7 sparring matches, and I’ve won all of them. You coming close does not mean you actually won.” Financier said in an amused tone as well, and Bubs smiles at her, not seeing this side of hers, too often.

(It’s a good thing too, because, if they were looking at Clotty, they would have seen him bite his lip a bit seeing their muscles this close...)

“What are you doing?”

“Ah!” The sudden question shocked Clotty, as if he just got caught doing something bad, “Just, checking to see any other wounds you have, nothing else...!”

“Really?~” GingerBrave then teased the Consul, making Clotty chuckle nervously, a golden blush covering his barely burnt skin.

“He was totally checking you out!” GingerBrave proclaimed loudly in Bubs’ room.

“Yeah, but have you seen the guy? He’s thin and lean, I actually have hard dough on the bone.” Bubs argued back. Honestly, they have noticed how much Clotty changes around them... how he suddenly becomes playful and sweet whenever it’s just them, and even if not, he clearly acts more friendly and genuine whenever addressing them...

GingerBrave noticed Bubs pondering again, “Oh... so I was wrong~ You don’t have a crush on him...”

“Yes, I’ve been telling you this for two weeks straight, kid...”

“He has a crush on you!~” Brave proudly teased, which made Bubs’ face become purple-lavender... realizing that Brave might be right...

“Oh, and it seems that with this revelation, your feelings are starting to-” Brave’s teasing comes to a halt as the Bubs covers his mouth with their hand. They then quickly shift topics.

“Can I ask? How’d you get this mission anyway?”

Brave takes the hand off his mouth, before telling Bubs: “Do you remember that Dark Cacao Kingdom mission a few months ago?”

“Yeah? The one you five went on in the winter? Where you talked to Dark Cacao, I remember...”

“Well, that was the stepping stone for this mission. We didn’t really expect the Republic to come over and do this...”

Bubs takes a breath and asks, “Why didn’t the rest of the crew come then? Strawberry’s really strong and Wiz knows lots of magic to help us. Custard III... well, he’s a great healer and knows politics well enough, surprisingly... and Chili’s good with swindling and breaking in and out, so why?”

“They were really tired after the last mission...”

“I suppose... but why not bring anyone else at all? I mean, the only reason I’m here with you is because Chili made me join you.”

Brave then looked at Bubs with a judgmental look, “Have you seen the kind of Cookies we’re surrounded by? I love them all, but some of them are kids younger than me, others are too destructive, some are distracting, and Herb will support any plant that wants to kill us Cookies... not really the greatest representatives of our kingdom?”

“Yeah, you’re right... But still, why you?”

“Honestly, I wanted to bring a lot of people, but they were busy or not interested so...”

Bubs sighed. And Brave could sense how tense they are, upon which, he says, “Look, I know you’re worried, but I’ve dealt with worse. I can handle a Council meeting, okay?”

Bubs looked at him with a soft smile, and tells him that, “Okay. We’re already this far anyway...”

They then stand up and walk out the door, telling Brave to go ahead and sleep. They’ll just check the airship and the surroundings for any danger, and then they’ll come back to sleep.

“Okay... good night, Bubs.”

“Good night, GingerBrave.”

Bubs went to the storage room of the ship to check the food, the fuel for the ship, and of course, the Soul Jam...

“No, nothing seems to have been disrupting... what is that?”

Bubs knelt down and saw a Rai-Sin feather... and when they realize what, and more importantly, who, this belongs to... they leave for their bed. Ready to sleep, knowing that the Soul Jam will be safe...
