Mini Update || 02 || Happy Birthday Dominick!

The sixth of the seven Kailman siblings is now a teen, and this is how his parents and little sister spent their day.

I love reading fanfictions. In fact I read a ton of Harry Potter fanfics. I came across many I greatly appreciated, and only a handful I did not wish to finish.

The things that attracts me in fics are :

- Marauder era

-Harry and Sirius bonding/learning about eachother

-Time travel fics (not with any of the golden trio tho)

-James and Sirius friendship

-James is revived/was in a coma and awakes

-Regulus lives

-Afterlife reunions

But of course there are also pet peeves (I consider them misconceptions) :

-Remus/Sirius calling Harry cub or pup (never happened in canon)

-Harry being a diminutive for Harrison or Hadrian (no, his name is HARRY Potter)

-The Dursleys being FAR too abusive (as if they were not bad enough)

-Weasleys are paid to be friendly to Harry (Mostly Ginny Molly and Ron)

-Ginny fed Harry a love potion

-Sirius being utterly, utterly stupid (I'm not talking about his recklessness, but the way some authors seem to consider his IQ before Azkaban)

-Unttaged or any improperly tagged ships

-Bashing other ships to make the main one seem better

-Regulus was a little sh*t (we know next to nothing about his personality)

-Sirius having a gf or a child (I'm okay with past relations, the problem here is where the hell was the gf when he was sent to Azkaban without a trial?)

-Dumbledore convincing Sirius that Peter should be the Potter's Secret Keeper

-Peter being completely unlikable in the Marauder era

-Ron always being jealous and in a bad mood

-Harry and Hermione are made for one another but were fed love potions to fall in love with one of the weasleys

-Its stated several times that James and Sirius are as close as brothers, yet in a huge number of Parent(s)-come-back-life fics, he easily believes he just abandonned Harry. (He begged Hagrid to have him let Harry, remember?)

-W*lfstar. (I just dont get this ship, there are too many problems for it too work IMO and finding good marauder era fics not including any is annoyingly hard)

-Lily and Remus being "the reasonable ones" (Yeah thats why Remus got detentions, and Lily constantly being written this way makes her boring)

-Remus having the best grades (Sirius and James were "exceptionnally bright" and "the best at everything they did", they also found the end of 5th exams insultingly easy, finishing before anyone else)

-"Uncle moony" (Not a very present uncle was he?)

-Harry time travel fics (Maybe I've been unlucky in the ones I read, but they more often than not contain Weasley/Dumbledore bashing)

-WCL (always the same plot)

-James and Lily revived post 5th year (My problem with this one is that Sirius is always revived as well)

-Lordship or OP Harry

-Harry having multiple animagus forms (Its not like it took Mcgonagall 10 years, and 3 years for the Marauders to master theirs. In a fic I read, it took Harry a month to achieve it)

-Harry having multiple pets

-The famous House-Trunk

-Nicknames like Siri/Remy/Jamsie/Reggie

-In the stories where Sirius raises Harry, Remus is almost always living with him to help him. Not saying it’s a bad thing, but I’m sure Sirius would have been perfectly able to raise Harry on his own.

- Remus being overglorified, having his flaws more or less erased. (The fanon representation of him actually made me dislike him.)

My Unpopular Harry Potter Opinions

I don’t like Draco/Harry

I don’t like Remus/Tonks

But I love Teddy and that whole part of Deathly Hallows where Harry yells at Remus to go back to his kid

Idk it’s confusing

I don’t really like Hagrid

Scorpius/Rose is terrible (this one’s not that unpopular I don’t think)

I don’t like Ron/Hermione because they argued over everything in the books and annoyed each other a lot

I don’t like that everyone just married their high school sweethearts

I don’t like Dobby and was almost kind of happy when he died

I know I’m a terrible person

Dumbledore was a horrible person

I’m more okay with the “Severus” part of “Albus Severus” because everyone was always going to remember Dumbledore, and I think Harry only used Severus so that Snape’s contribution would be recognized

And if Snape lived Harry would not have named his child after Snape

Avada Kedavra is dumb and boring

I think Ron should have died instead of Fred

I will forever be upset that Harry didn’t tell Voldemort that Regulus Black betrayed him

Harry should have been the DADA teacher after being an Auror for just a few years to round up the remaining Death Eaters

I really want a story or something when Harry and co’s kids get told about the war in detail, whether in be from their parents or in a school history lesson

I don’t think Neville/Luna should have been a thing. They’re great friends but Luna is too free-spirited to ever be the kind of wife I imagine Neville wanting.

Why did everyone get married and have kids? There are plenty of people in the real world who don’t want that and it would have been cool for someone besides Charlie Weasley to represent that.

Percy is not a bad person!!!

Sirius Black was totally and completely suave, dapper, smooth, gentlemanly, etc. but also respected everyone (girls, trans, lgbt+, etc) and their boundaries and always made sure people were comfortable. (again, not sure how unpopular this is, but I haven’t seen much on it so...)

The Golden Trio should have remained 100% platonic

Oliver Wood is really freaking fantastic

McGonagall was basically everyone’s mother

James Potter was a selfless amazing man

this is becoming more like just my opinions oh well

Scorpius/Albus is perfect

Harry Potter would have been a great dad

I don’t like the fanfics/headcanons that portray everyone as gay (or in a gay relationship or trans) because that’s not how real life works but it doesn’t really bother me as much as a lot of other things.

Seamus/Dean is great

I would rather have Fred die than Remus Lupin

I’M SORRY OKAY

Draco and Astoria are so cute together and they’re great parents and probably both total dorks and I love it

Sirius/Remus definitely happened and is great

I used to basically idolize Hermione but now I find her annoying and overly-emotional

The movies messed up Ron and Hermione 

Fred and George are geniuses

If Fred had to die I wish he died for someone. You know, like shielding Percy from an explosion but dying in the process. Something like that would have been perfect and shown the depth that a lot of people don’t think about

Everyone should definitely read the books because they’re so much better

Oliver/Percy is great

I pity Draco Malfoy

Somewhere deep inside, Bellatrix cared for her disowned family. She didn’t try to kill Sirius, she tried to stupefy him. It didn’t seem to effect her much after the fact, but it still makes me wonder because she’s normally so ruthless. She didn’t even hurt him.

Lupin is so extra and fabulous and I love him

After the war, the trio definitely worked hard to make life better for werewolves

Madam Pomfrey is a bamf

I hate it when people blame the Horcrux for Ron leaving in Deathly Hallows. Because Hermione and Harry could control themselves, and Harry was a literal Horcrux himself, so putting the locket on was like double and he was still relatively fine (aside from being grumpy)

I really want to know how menstruation works at Hogwarts

McGonagall never let people see her cry so she shut herself off after the Battle of Hogwarts. 

Maybe when McGonagall is crying alone in her office one day recently after the battle, Harry comes in and they talk about a lot because she was always basically his mother and she loves her students as if they were her children

Harry is a sweetheart but also so fucking sassy and I love it more than anything

The books are so funny tho

It sort of seems like Harry/Ginny make better friends, but idk I could go either way they’re not horrible

Slytherin isn’t that bad

Harry & co. definitely had PTSD and lots of trauma and I want to know more about their processes and dealing with it

Sirius/Remus is the best damn power couple ever

Draco deserved a redemption arc

There should’ve been more focus on other houses besides Gryffindor

Half-Blood Prince is one of the best in the beginning and end, but the middle is boring and unnecessary

Ravenclaw is the best house

Prisoner of Azkaban is also one of the best (movie and book)

Deathly Hallows is the best book, but neither movie is that good

Harry is actually clever/smart/intelligent and people always say he’s not but he really is, especially in bad situations. 

Hermione may be smart, but in urgent situations, she’s too emotional and can’t think which isn’t good

Harry is great at quick-thinking and problem-solving

Hermione was a control-freak and also sort of abusive/manipulative

Voldemort’s ego made him not as scary

Fleur was a bamf

Molly Weasley is a questionable mother and close-minded

There are a lot of plotholes

Percy was so complex and didn’t deserve the hate

ALL CHARACTERS MAKE MISTAKES

The movies aren’t that bad, but people compare them too much to the books

The houses aren’t that great of an idea with the different traits, and the fanbase obsesses over the houses way too much

Lily/James is such a powerful and healthy relationship and I love it

I love the platonic affection shown without romantic intentions I might add to this

DEATH TW. so albus was adopted by the potters when he was only one. his birth parents, a halfblood couple from london, were murdered in their home one night when al was just a baby; the result of a past affair gone wrong. whether he was left alive because he was merely a child or because the murderer didn’t realize he was asleep upstairs remains unclear, but he was the only one still alive when the team of aurors arrived, among them harry potter. unfortunately, albus had no other living relatives that could take him in, and his situation hitting close to home for harry, he and ginny made the decision to adopt him. so yeah, al grew up with the potters from a young age, and is just so, so grateful to have been adopted by them. while he has sometimes wondered what his birth parents were like and what his life would have looked like had they lived — really, who wouldn’t? — al loves the life he’s been given and wouldn’t change it for the world. he’s never once had to doubt the love of his family — it’s clear in their every action — and the same can be said for al. he loves them more than anything in the world, and really would do anything for them. 

when it came time for al to go to hogwarts, he was quite nervous about his sorting, but quickly found that slytherin really was the right fit for him. he’s ambitious, resourceful and holds a great deal of self-preservation, and his house helped him hone his skills and develop them. 

he was always a really hard-working student and often one of the top in his classes, so that plus his helpful and friendly nature made him a good fit for prefect in his fifth year, and he eventually became head student in his last year which he was rly proud of hjfsgdj

growing up, al was quite an observant child and quickly became interested in politics and the way the world worked. somewhat cynical, he couldn’t help but notice the flaws in the system more so than the things they got right, and felt that he had to do something to make the world a little bit better than it was when he entered it; just do whatever he could. his family have been subjected to countless powerpoint presentations about things he would improve and correct because he is a certified nerd™ hfjkdhkj (still thinks of himself as a Bad Boy™ but that’s just wrong)

would play the sims a lot as a kid to show how he would build a society fjhsdk 

his goal is to one day become minister for magic so he can work on improving life in wizarding uk for its citizens, and he’s currently working as an employee in the department of international magical cooperation. he landed an internship there after he graduated hogwarts, after which they hired him. he really wants to learn as much as he can before he fully pursues his dream, especially in terms of politics, which is why he started his ministry career here. so yeah minister is the longtime goal but i mean he’s gotta try to survive this war first! we’ll see if he succeeds. 

speaking of which… al joined the order pretty much as soon as he was able to, partly because he fully believes in what they stand for, but also because he kind of felt like he had to, coming from the family he does? frankly, the war has terrified him from the start, and he wasn’t sure what he could really contribute to the order; he doesn’t consider himself brave and a big part of him would rather run away than join a battle, but he would never go through with it ( he wouldn’t be able to live with it tbh ). i think it comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of what bravery means; it doesn’t mean that you feel no fear, just that you try to do what’s right despite it, so like — al is brave, as he fights for the order and what he considers to be right, he just struggles to identify it in himself. he can see it so easily in his friends and family, but when he looks at himself he just considers himself a coward which tbh… isn’t even true? we love insecurity in war verses! besides that he’s pretty confident tho but that’s like. his Big Insecurity you feel 

DEATH TW, PARENTAL DEATH TW. harry’s death just ruined al. he keeps replaying the last moments in his mind, wanting to go back and stay with him and fight, do something to help, not just run away. he blames himself, even though he knows deep down it’s not his fault. since the start of the war, al has been terrified of losing someone he loves, but he never really thought it would be his dad - he didn’t really think anyone could get him down. he was harry potter, and he’d already survived so much, so surely he would survive this war too. finding out that he didn’t almost made al lose hope - if his dad didn’t make it, what chance did the rest of them have?

that said, when al found out about the resurrection, he was horrified. he missed his dad more than anything, but in al’s mind, there are things you simply don’t mess with, and death is top of that list. it goes against every natural law and the fact that his sister and the other knights managed to do it made him nauseous. he’s angry at lily for her actions, but more than anything he’s mad at himself - he should have made more efforts to reach out to her and support her in her grief, even though they’re in different locations. if he had been a better brother, maybe he could have helped her through it and known about the plans in advance so he could stop it

not only is he horrified that they pulled harry back from death, when he was finally at peace, but the loss of his godfather in doing so was a punch to the stomach and more grief than he knows how to handle. losing neville was something none of them saw coming; losing the only other father figure he has, and knowing that the longbottoms are now suffering as much as he and his family is, is something he never imagined or wished would happen. all the grief he’s been feeling have returned tenfold and he doesn’t really know how to handle it

because of his belief of how wrong the resurrection was ( and as part of his plot arc ), al is trying to convince the order not to restore harry’s memories. he knows some might find it strange or even cold for him to take that stance when he can have his dad back, but the thought of them having snatched harry from peace wrecks him. he feels like the least they can do for him now is allow him to live the rest of his life out in peace, away from the horrors of the war. what he doesn’t admit is that part of the reason he’s so against bringing harry’s memories back is because if his dad returns to fighting in the war, there’s a chance they can lose him again, and al doesn’t think he can survive that loss a second time 

nr 1 ginny weasley defence squad over here. losing harry made al realize how much he’s taken his parents for granted? not in terms of like — ignoring them or not appreciating them enough throughout his life, because he always has, but he never imagined he would lose them? he always thought they would be there? but now harry is gone but also back but also not really and it’s a mess and neville is gone too and it’s just ginny left and al is absolutely terrified, he is so scared something will happen to her too, or to one of his siblings. he doesn’t share that with anyone, really, especially his mum, she has enough on her plate, but he wishes he could just take her, lily, and james away somewhere safe so he could look out for them  because he cannot stand the thought of losing them. he just can’t and he’s so afraid. END DEATH TW, PARENTAL DEATH TW.

okay in terms of prophecies al’s one says that he ‘is destined to achieve true greatness. however, it will come at the price of what they hold most dear. they will be tested in ways they cannot imagine, and if they do not persevere through it, everything will be doomed.’ so that definitely starts out good but then sounds terrible! al honestly wishes he didn’t hear it and he’s trying to forget it but it’s hard. achieving greatness sounds good and all, especially for someone who has been dreaming of helping make the world a better place as minister since he was a kid, but at the cost of losing what he holds most dear? no fucking thank you. he’s absolutely terrified it means he might lose more family members, because they’re the ones he cares about most in the world, and he just can’t go through that again. he can’t. he wishes it won’t come true but also the warning that if he doesn’t persevere through it they’re all fucked isn’t very reassuring so altogether he’s Not Pleased!

anyways when describing characters as different types of lights, jane said al was a guiding lighthouse, looking out for the people in the night, and that really is the best description of him i can imagine tbh 

but yeah, to sum him up, he’s got that Potter Sass™ and can be a hypocritical pain sometimes, but he’s quite friendly and charismatic and he’s got a good head on his shoulders and right now he is Suffering™ because of the war and what it’s doing to his family

OOTP, it’s a good book, a lot of angst, I like to suffer. Also if I was Harry I’d be mad with every effing adult on my life a long time ago. I’d have snapped like waaaay before. HARRY READS LILY’S LETTER IN DH: listen harry doesnt actually spend a lot of the books angsting over the fact that he doesnt have parents but in moments like this u remember he IS AN ORPHAN AND IT GETS ME SO HARD. fuk like just picturing harry crouched on the floor of sirius’s bedroom reading that letter… rereading it… crying… wow.gif!!!!! the line that makes me cry eveRY TIME is “She had made her g’s the same way he did : he searched through the letter for every one of them, and each felt like a friendly little wave glimpsed from behind a veil.“ LIKE RIP RIP RIP ABORT ABORT ABORT ITS TOO SAD!!!!!

THE LOST PROPHECY IN OOTP: JESSESCREAMING.JPEG!!!!!!!!!!!! listen ,,, i talk ab this chapter so much on my blog. it is my #1 favorite moment in my #1 favorite harry potter book which is my #1 favorite series of all time. SO ITS A PRETTY BIG DEAL. harry’s reaction to sirius’s death… his anger at dumbledore… his grief… his discovery of his fate… its beautiful writing and its so painful but so amazing to read. LIKE!!!!! MY BABY!!! HE’S LOST SO MANY PEOPLE!!!!!!!! MY SWEET SUMMER CHILD!!!!!!!!!! “I DON’T CARE!“ Harry yelled at them, snatching up a lunascope and throwing it into the fireplace. “I’VE HAD ENOUGH, I’VE SEEN ENOUGH, I WANT OUT, I WANT IT TO END, I DON’T CARE ANYMORE!” “You do care,” said Dumbledore. He had not flinched or made a single move to stop Harry demolishing his office. His expression was calm, almost detached. “You care so much you feel as though you will bleed to death with the pain of it.”” LIKE LITERALLY WHEN I GET TO THIS POINT I HAVE TO TAKE A BREAK BC IM CRYING SO MUCH I CANT MAKE OUT THE WORDS!!!!!!!!!!!! also fun story: one time i was listening to ootp on audiobook while on vacation and we were in the car waiting to taxi on to a ferry boat and we were listening to this chapter when the ferry guy came by to take our tickets and i had like TEARS STREAMING DOWN MY FACE and jim dale is yelling as harry in the background…. the guy was like ‘is this bitch ok??’ lmaOOOOo 

HARRY AND THE MIRROR OF ERISED IN SS:  this is another one of those moments where you remember that harry is an orphan and its /so/ painful. thinking about this teeny 11 year old baby harry sneaking out every night just to sit in front of this mirror so he can see his parents………my darling baby sweetheart i love him So Much. it just makes me so sad like hes /so young/ AND HE JUST WANTS TO SEE HIS PARENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHH!! it also gives way to one of my all time favorite hp quotes: “It does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” 

HARRY STOPS SIRIUS AND LUPIN FROM KILLING PETER IN POA: me reading this part is literally ISAYTHATSMYBABYANDIMREALLYPROUD.GIF!!!!!! like!! my boy!! he finds out this man literally caused the death of his parents and he MAKES THE GROWN ASS ADULTS SPARE HIS LIFE… LIKE… he literally acts twice his age and is so mature and is just…….so amazing. it shows such strength and wisdom and it makes me SO PROUD. the way he references james also makes me cry because you see the relationship harry has with james even though he’s literally never met him and its so beautiful. i love harry so much. 

HARRY AFTER SECTUMSEMPER-ING MALFOY IN HBP: this is literally the opposite of that last one where im so proud of harry this is def… not one of his best moments lol. he rly rly fucks up and his guilt is so raw and it makes me so emotional because i feel SO bad for him. its def an important harry moment in the books because it shows his flaws and the consequences of his rage, but it also shows how GOOD he is because he feels so bad about what happens and like willingly takes his punishment even though it means that he cant play in the quidditch match. he really like… atones and even tho its rough to read i def love that its a part of the series bc its a really like watershed moment for harry and i think it really reminds him of the wizard he wants to be. this part also leads to i think a more satisfying harry/ginny first kiss bc ginny defends harry and then him not going to the game leads to “several sunlit days” AKA ONE OF MY FAVE HP MOMENTS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

HARRY AND HERMIONE VISIT JAMES AND LILY’S GRAVE IN DH: “But they were not living, thought Harry: They were gone. The empty words could not disguise the fact that his parents’ moldering remains lay beneath snow and stone, indifferent, unknowing.And tears came before he could stop them, boiling hot then instantly freezing on his face, and what was the point in wiping them off or pretending? He let them fall, his lips pressed hard together, looking down at the thick snow hiding from his eyes the place where the last of Lily and James lay, bones now, surely, or dust, not knowing or caring that their living son stood so near, his heart still beating, alive because of their sacrifice and close to wishing, at this moment, that he was sleeping under the snow with them.”  THIS IS ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE MOMENTS THAT I HAVE TO STOP READING BC IM CRYING SO MUCH I CANT MAKE OUT THE WORDS ANYMORE. I CRIED TYPING THIS. IM SO SAD. 

THE FOREST AGAIN IN DH: hoo boy. hoooooo boy this is a Big One. this one is really…. wow. just. wow. [deep breath]. there is So Much in this chapter that makes me cry where do i even START. harry realizing that he has to die and ACCEPTING IT BRAVELY LIKE THE HERO HE IS. “Why had he never appreciate what a miracle he was,  brain and nerve and bounding heart?” im crying….. hes so good. HARRY NEARLY STOPPING WHEN HE SEES GINNY and ginny’s crying and comforting some girl and im crying too. JAMES. SIRIUS. LILY. REMUS. WHEN HARRY ASKS IF IT HURTS TO DIE LIKE LITEARLLY I HAVE TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN AND GET UP  AND WLAK AROUND THE ROOM BECAUSE I GET SO EMOTIONAL LIKE. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! when harry sees harry and screams at him ……………… rip in pieces me!!!!!!!! ALSO ONE OF HIS LAST THOUGHTS BEFORE THE AVADA KEDAVRA IS OF GINNY AND KISSING HER……….. [GUNSHOTS] [SCREAMING]

BELLATRIX TORTURES HERMIONE IN DH: fuk this scene is no joke scary like it took harry potter to another level of real darkness. hermione being tortured was so chilling like beautiufl amazing smart snarky hermione it was so painful to read like my heart rate goes up when i read it bc im worried for my girl :/ and ron is sHAKING and like screaming and literally throwing himself at the walls to try to get to her and its SO upsetting like. they are still CHILDREN like theyre all so young and they dont deserve this like. hearing her plead and stuff … its just…. too much. these are my CHILDREN i have to PROTECT them. 

HARRY DIGS DOBBYS GRAVE IN DH: this is another one of those harry moments where i just want to give him a huge hug. like he insists on digging dobby’s grave by hand which is just ..... [gets choked up] its fine. and his thoughts while he dig make me so sad. he so /tired/. hes so frustrated with dumbledore and he the hallows and the horcruxes and he feels responsible for what happened. and ron coming out and helping him dig silently makes me so happy and its one of those times u really see how much rons friendship means to harry. and harry comes out of this like ... older and more mature? his wisdom and knowledge is rly apparent when he talks with griphook and olivander right after this like. he knows what hes going to do. hes made his choice. hes not going to race voldemort for the wand. i love him so much for that choice. hes such a grown man in this part like accepting responsibility, taking care of hermione and everyone like getting things in order. i love him. 

MRS WEALSEY HUGS HARRY IN THE HOSPITAL WING IN GOF: “’It wasn’t your fault, Harry,’ Mrs. Weasley whispered. ‘I told him to take the cup with me,’ said Harry. Now the burning feeling was in his throat too. He wished Ron would look away. Mrs. Weasley set the potion down on the bedside cabinet, bent down, and put her arms around Harry. He had no memory of ever being hugged like this, as though by a mother. The full weight of everything he had seen that night seemed to fall in upon him as Mrs. Weasley held him to her. His mothers face, his father’s voice, the sight of Cedric, dead on the ground all started spinning in his head until he could hardly bear it, until he was screwing up his face against the howl of misery fighting to get out of him.” HARRY POTTER DESERVES MORE HUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he feels so guilty about cedric and god bless mrs weasley for telling him it wasnt his fault because it WASNT!!! he did so amazing in the graveyard like.. .he saw voldemort return and he fought him and he survived and he saw his paretns and hE TOOK CEDRICS BODY BACK SO IT COULD BE WITH HIS FAMILY!!!!!!!! HE TOOK IT BACK FOR THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  i would die a thousand deaths if it meant that harry didnt have to experience this pain!!!!

whew so there we go!!!!! the bottom line is obviously that i love the harry potter series more than anything and specifically i love the boy harry potter so so SO much and his suffering is agonizing to read and he didnt deserve any of it!!! i can litearlly think of SO many more heartbreaking moments in the series but here are just a handful. happy birthday to harry!!!
