hulu was doing live coverage of the election until 2:00am, at which point my power randomly went out and when I reopened the hulu app on my tv the election coverage was replaced with
#us politics#I don't care if it was intentional or a coincidence or what that shit is funny as hell#I got like 3 hours of sleep in the past 48 hours#my closest friends are sleeping and don't know yet#we're going to dc a month from now on vacation and none of us expected this#I've been on twitter and it's crushing I see my friends in fear for their lives#I see the worst people in the world cheering for their own downfall because all they care about is someone else having it worse#like they'll douse the vulnerable among us with gasoline and pray for hellfire thinking they'll be safe#but the flames don't discriminate like they do and we're all going to burn#except for the wealthy and powerful of course they'll be polluting the solar system or dead from old age#and the only hell they'll ever know is the one millions upon millions of people eagerly built in their names#in the name of 'greatness'#(man I get really melodramatic when I haven't slept)#and I'm scared too I didn't think this was going to happen and I have no idea what the future holds anymore#and I know I'm privileged to be able to say this when people's lives are about to be destroyed but I think I'm more sad than anything#so disappointed that 70 million people voted for *that*#because it's completely unconscionable to anyone with a soul but somehow he's winning the popular vote for the first time???#what do you mean more people like him now than they did in 2016 and 2020#this genuinely feels like a nightmare are we really so far gone as a country??? as a society?????#that we would not only let a convicted felon (who was served a lawsuit ON ELECTION DAY) on the ballot#but that SEVENTY. MILLION. PEOPLE. would vote for him? to run the country??? to represent us on a global stage?????#*THAT'S* what we as a nation have chosen??? what the fuck is wrong with this country?????#why him indeed#and yet I still have hope#inexplicably

seeing all these antivoting posts are making me lose my mind
#its literally fine to hate biden but if you really wanted to give impact to voting youd encourage people to start#organizing to register disenfranchised people to vote en masse who would actually push ballots left both in local elections and national#its just so privileged to tell people voting does nothing when time and time again black americans have been lynched for even#just getting registered to vote#anyways part of organizing is making voting actually impactful and obviously voting isnt a revolution#but if youre ignoring decades of voter suppression and lynchmobs and throw your hands up then you dont care about representing those people#like no duh organizing and voting arent 1=1 but organizing should encompass voting in some ways#color.txt#anyways. ugh. ugh. i just hate the black and white view thats everywhere#your organizing shoulddnt be guys lets just stop voting but lets get felons and suppressed areas to vote

Putting some positivity out there about the election
Harris has raised a record amount of money from small donors after Biden dropped out, in addition to being able to access all the funds from their campaign they already had
Trump is deeply unpopular and people have already seen the chaos that 4 years of his presidency would bring. A lot of people have been energized to vote against him, even if they're not fond of Dems
Polling showed a red wave for Republicans in the 2022 midterms, and yet they only barely had control of the House, and couldn't even agree on a Speaker for a historic amount of time. Dems also increased their lead in the Senate. Historically, midterms favor the opposition party and have lower turnout, so this is a good sign for the House in 2024
Dems are fighting back in swing states. PA and GA both put in Democratic senators in the midterms
In my home state of PA, I am from Bucks County, which is a swing county for the state. Moms for Libery took over the school board and used it to attack queer students, enact book bans, and funnel money to themselves and the superintendent. At the most recent election, Dems turned out and took back every single open seat, ousting the board and superintendent. Worry about similar takeovers in surrounding school boards also increased turnout
Abortion rights are on the ballot in many states, which has been a winning issue for Dems and increased turnout
Republicans were prepared to attack a feeble old Biden who isn't the strongest speaker. I don't think they expected him to actually drop out, and they now have to put an 78 year old convicted felon up against a prosecutor
Awareness of Project 2025 and it's contents has entered the public sphere and is being much more openly discussed on the news. While Trump has insisted he has nothing to do with it, most of the authors worked in his administration and Trump has worked closely with the Heritage foundation
Feel free to add more things on this thread, but the most important thing is to get out there and VOTE
Vote for President
Vote for Senators
Vote for Congresspeople
Vote in your local elections
Vote Blue down ballot

not to post political stuff here too often, but good golly, trump really talks like a supervillain sometimes, huh?
like if this was complete fiction, i would criticize the writing for being patronizing and too on the nose.
#what a time to be alive#''there will be a reckoning'' who can hear those words and not think that sounds so blatantly villainous and unhinged#ik biden isn't fantastic and there are no doubt some big skeletons in his closet (an unfortunate qualification for being a politician)#but you cannot tell me that you'd rather an aspiring dictator in office. you can't man. you just cannot look me in the eye and say that.#i am begging everyone to vote during this election. trump getting 4 more years would be so legitimately scary and bleak.#it would not surprise me if he's just insane enough to pull some extra mad dictator nonsense out of spite for everything if he wins.#also just. the thought of having a literal convicted felon in office. bruh.#i wouldn't be able to but the thought of moving to another country would be so enticing if he got in office again.#any mutuals outside the us wanna marry me so i can get citizenship? any non-mutuals? skflskfs#(i'm only half joking LOL)#merri mumbles#politics for ts#tw politics#world news for ts#tw world news

This is actually not true of the entire US! It depends on the state. When I worked in Ohio, we would encounter people who incorrectly believed they couldn't vote because of past felonies.
16 states allow people with felony convictions to vote once their sentence is complete.
9 states have restrictions on voting rights for people with felon convictions. Some of these are effectively a ban. One of these states is Florida, which passed a referendum to restore voting rights to people with felony convictions who had completed their sentence, but the DeSantis administration has found various loopholes to continue restricting voting.
23 states ban prisoners from voting but allow people with felony convictions to vote if they are not in prison.
2 states, Maine and Vermont, allow everyone to vote.
The ACLU has a map.
OP, I know you're not American and may or may not be interested in this, but it's important for any Americans seeing this to know that depending on where they live they may in fact have the right to vote. Misinformation about this is a form of voter suppression.
Not only can prisoners not vote in the US, once you've been convicted of a felony (a very large category of crimes that prosecutors like to find excuses to fit people into), you can never vote again for the rest of your life.
Oh that is fucked, that is fucked beyond belief, that shouldn't be allowed
#yes states decide who can vote in federal elections#yes that's kind of insane#I'm in favor of full felon enfranchisement#I'm actually about to go research how it works in maine and vermont in terms of using prisons as addresses for districting purposes#because my one concern with prisoners voting has been the logistics of that#I think they should have the right to vote too I just haven't looked into how it would work

"This country hates women." Nuh uh. Say the quiet part out loud. This country hates black women. This country hates black women. Why run from it when we are literally looking at evidence of it right now? People would rather vote for a white male felon, rapist, and traitor than they would for a highly educated sitting Vice President, who happens to be a black woman. Say the quiet part out loud and, for once in your lives, stop goddamn running from that truth.

Sometimes, as much as I love internet communities and spaces, I really think a lot of people have spent so much time in sanitized, morally pure echo chambers that they lose sight of realism and life outside the internet.
I live in Alabama. My fiancée and I cannot hold hands down the street without fear of homophobic assholes. We have an abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest. We are one of the poorest states in the US with some of the lowest scores on metrics related to quality of life, including maternal mortality, healthcare, education, and violence. It’s not a coincidence that we are also one of the most red, one of the most Republican states in the Union. In 2017 the UN said the conditions in Alabama are similar to those in a third-world country.
Trump gave a voice to the most violently racist, sexist, xenophobic groups of people who, unfortunately for most of us in the Southern U.S., run our states and have only grown more powerful since his rise to power. The Deep South powers MAGA, and we all suffer for it.
We have no protections if they don’t come from the federal government.
I know people are suffering internationally and my heart is with them. However, this election is not just about foreign policy - we have millions of Americans right here at home living in danger, living in areas where they have been completely abandoned by their local leaders. We need this win.
No candidate is perfect, but for the first time in my voting lifetime I’m excited to vote. I’m excited for the Kamala Harris/Tim Walz ticket because they are addressing the issues close to home. They’re advocating for education as the ticket to a better life, but without the crippling student debt. They’re advocating for the right to love who you love without fear and with pride. Kamala has always been pro-LGBT+ and so has Tim. Again, if you’re queer in the South, we don’t have support unless it comes from the federal government, and we absolutely will not have support if the Republicans regain the White House.
Kamala speaks in length about re-entry programs to reduce recidivism and help people who have been arrested and imprisoned regain their lives. Tim Walz supported restoring voting rights to felons. In the South, you know who comprise the majority of felons? Members of minorities. It’s one of the major tools of systemic racism and mass disenfranchisement, and arguably the modern face of slavery (there are some fantastic documentaries and books that explain the connection between the post-Reconstruction South and the disproportionate rates of imprisonment for BIPOC). Having candidates who recognize this and want to restore the freedom and rights to people who have come into contact with the criminal justice system? And keep them from having to go to prison in the first place? That’s refreshing. That’s exciting.
I would *love* to live in a country where women’s rights are respected, where LGBT+ rights and protections are a given, where we treat former criminals and individuals experiencing mental health crises with respect and dignity. I would *love* to live in a country where education is free of religious interference and each and every citizen is entitled to a fair start and equal opportunities.
But I don’t live in that country. Millions and millions of Americans find their rights and freedoms up for debate and on the ballot.
Project 2025 poses the largest threat to the future of our democracy as we know it. We are being called to fight for the future of our country.
We have to put on our oxygen masks first before we can help others.
You don’t have moral purity when you wash your hands of the millions of us who are still fighting for own freedoms right here.
The reality is that a presidential candidate is a best fit, and not a perfect fit. But comparatively speaking? Kamala is pretty damn close.
#us politics#kamala harris#vote kamala#vote blue#don’t forget about the southern states please#we’re still here

https://meidasnews.com/news/republican-mayor-of-3rd-largest-city-in-az-endorses-harris
John Giles, the Republican Mayor of Mesa, Arizona, wrote an OpEd today for the Arizona Republic stating the reasons why he is endorsing Kamala Harris for President. Mesa is the 3rd largest city in Arizona, and the Arizona Republic is the largest newspaper by circulation in the crucial battleground state.
Giles listed the following reasons why he can't support Donald Trump: 1. He refused to accept the outcome of the 2020 election, and continues to do so. 2. He continues to trash the American legal system to delegitimize it. 3. He orchestrated the "fake elector" scheme in Arizona. 4. He orchestrated the sham "audit" of the election by the Arizona Senate and Cyber Ninjas. 5. He blocked the bipartisan border bill negotiated in the Senate. 6. He treated Infrastructure Week like a joke when cities like his badly needed it.
7. He is a convicted felon and threat to the nation. 8. He has threatened to abandoned NATO. 9. He has eroded public confidence in our institutions. 10. His advisors and associates drafted Project 2025, which is a threat to our freedoms. 11. He is crude and vulgar. Giles then listed the reasons why he isn't just anti-Trump, he is also pro-Harris: 1. The Administration delivered on their promise with infrastructure funding for the Phoenix-Mesa Airport, and made technological investments in the transportation sector. 2. Thousands of new jobs are being created in Arizona with the CHIPS Act. 3. She has taken a strong stand against gun violence. 4. She has taken a strong stand for women's rights which are under assault from MAGA Republicans.
Giles then concluded with the following: "We can choose a future for our children and grandchildren based on decency, respect and morality — or succumb to the crudeness and vulgarity of Trump and J.D. Vance and the far-right agenda they would champion.
Arizona leaders like McCain and Sen. Mark Kelly have embodied the commitment to country over party. And it’s that same high caliber of character and leadership I see in Vice President Harris.
That’s why I’m standing with her. Kamala Harris is the competent, just and fair leader our country deserves. This year too much is at stake to vote Republican at the top of the ticket.
It will take Arizona Republicans, independents and Democrats standing together against a far-right agenda. Let us put country over party by voting to stop Trump and protect our democracy."
Powerful stuff.
Winning back Arizona is crucial for Donald Trump. It is difficult to see any electoral path to victory for Trump without Arizona. He has continued to support candidates in that state like Kari Lake and Blake Masters who are toxic to moderate voters. He continues to attack the McCain family, who remain popular with those same moderate Arizona voters.
This endorsement by Giles certainly doesn't help Donald Trump, and gives a big boost to Kamala Harris in Arizona.

This is important, but let's avoid immediately ending USA's democracy first, yeah?
Do not let this keep you from voting. You can vote and criticize and do activism about that criticism. Inaction never helps.
If you're not voting, ask yourself right now what you're doing instead. And if you have a strategy, great! But if your answer is waiting for a better option you're gonna watch the world burn, and waiting for someone else to put out the fire is only gonna get you so far.
The Democratic Party: "We are the champions of democracy! We believe in voting rights!"
Also the democrats:
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/biden-allies-plot-thwart-third-party-bids-that-threaten-his-reelection-2024-01-18/
#you should still very much vote#not voting is USELESS unless you're devoting yourself to activism to compensate#if you do nothing you are literally just asking for nothing to change#withholding your vote (inaction) CANNOT create change. it can only allow other (worse-intentioned) actors to create (worse) change.#don't stop at being critical of the shitty voting system. use it AND fight for change. and if you can't do both do the bare minimum and vote#i know they're making it hard and neither side is without fault but one side is CLEARLY MORE AT FAULT ARE YOU KIDDING ME TRUMP'S A FELON#WHO INVITES OPEN RACISTS AND SEXISTS AND TRANSPHOBES AND LITERALLY EVERYONE BIGOTED UNDER THE SUN TO SPEAK AT HIS RALLIES.#so yeah that's negative change if you have braincells and having a female non-white president might at least do one single positive thing#alongside all the shit that either side would do#your principles are not worth trans rights or reproductive rights or gay rights or non-christian religious rights and trump is gonna take#literally whatever he can away#don't even get me started on migrants and refugees and asylum seekers#people's lives depend on this shit so just don't be an asshole tbh. voting for kamala means some will have a better chance at survival#fuck man ok sorry for the rant i guess

"a convicted felon won". the worst felon in my life was never convicted, but his victims were. money first and foremost determines whether or not your crimes will be punished so of course rich people are allowed to brag about getting away with rape, and they will not be socially shunned because violence against women only "matters" to people when they can use it in a political argument without any real conviction.
and no, I don't think kamala lost because of misogyny, in fact I feel insane reading takes on this because it's actually shocking she got as far as she did without the clout biden had to get him votes. a lot of people voted for her just in opposition to trump, though, so ironically trump specifically being her opponent is likely what got her more votes. regardless, it's practically impossible for trump to lose no matter who the democratic candidate is. no matter how much democrats pander with policies it won't matter. they could literally copy-paste trump's platform and trump voters would still never vote for them because trump's main appeal is persona. he has a cult of personality that trumps (no pun intended) political platform. that's why no trump supporter gives a fuck about your arguments regarding trump flip-flopping on certain topics. melania even posted something advocating reproductive rights recently--none of them withdrew support. so, unless democrats are actually stupid, the whole 'appealing to the right' thing has always been a scam and democratic voters keep falling for it. they aren't appealing to the right because they think they'll win; it's because to them, going left is still worse than losing an election. going left would lose them more money in the long run.
trump's popularity is not a mystery. it can be explained by aggrieved entitlement combined with already existing political strategy. "aggrieved entitlement" is defined as "the fusion of a sense of entitlement with victimisation" and "anger and antisocial behavior in response to encountering the boundaries, limits, and refusal of another person". it is a repeat occurrence in response to social change threatening dominant power structures...or, if you want the most simple explanation, "women and minorities graduating university hurt my feelings". in the US aggrieved entitlement has also been proposed as a motive for some school shootings and certain serial killers with crimes comparable to femicides.
anyway, these are my thoughts.
