I'm as grateful for cellphones as the next person, but sometimes I think about how everyone having a phone on them at all times really did cause us to loose some things as a society. I mean - for example, kids these days will never experience their car breaking down and needing to find the nearest place with a phone they can use. They're never going to have the opportunity to tentatively approach a house only to discover that it's full of queer people having a party hosted by a transvestite to celebrate his creation of a sex homunculus, stay the night, and loose their virginity while unintentionally partaking in cannibalism. It's tragic, that kind of gay sexual awakening just doesn't happen these days because of cellphones.
#do i have actual legitimate thoughts on how cell phones have altered the fabric of society in both positive and negative ways?#yes.#am i making a dumb joke about rocky horror picture show instead of articulating the complex cultural changes wrought by their ubiquity?#also yes.#in which i say things

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "šš¼šš¼ā" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
#yeehaw#1k#5k#10k#posts that got cursed. blasted. im making these tag updates after... 19 hours?#also i have been told it should say speech loss bc nonverbal specifically refers to the permanent state. did not know that!#unfortunately i fear it is so far past containment that even if i edited it now it would do very little. but noted for future reference#edit 2: nvm enough ppl have come to rb it from me directly that i changed the wording a bit. hopefully this makes sense#also. in case anyone is curious. though i doubt anyone who is commenting these things will check the original tags#1) my friend did not do this on purpose in any way. it was not intended to distract me or to hit on me. im a lesbian hes a gay man. cmon now#he felt very bad about it afterwards. i thought it was hilarious but it was very embarrassed and apologetic#2) āwhy didn't he use š«µš¼?ā didn't exist yet. āwhy didn't he use š?ā dunno! we'd been using a lot of hand emojis. šļæ½ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½ is an ok sign#like it makes sense. it was just a silly mixup. also No i did not invent šš¼šš¼ as a gesture meaning sex. do you live under a rock#3) nonspeaking episodes are a recurring thing in my life and have been since i was born. this is not a quirky one-time thing#it is a pervasive issue that is very frustrating to both myself and the people i am trying to communicate with. in which trying to speak is#extremely distressing and causes very genuine anguish. this post is not me making light of it it's just a funny thing that happened once#it's no different than if i post about a funny thing that happened in conjunction w a physical disability. it's just me talking abt my life#i don't mind character tags tho. those can be entertaining. i don't know what any of you are talking about#Except the ppl who have said this is pego/ryu or wang/xian. those people i understand and respect#if you use it as a writing prompt that's fine but send it to me. i want to see it#aaaand i think that's it. everyday im tempted to turn off rbs on it. it hasn't even been a week

I love how Gerald was trying to keep Shadow from spoiling anything about the future meanwhile literally everything Shadow says and does around Maria is the biggest death flag ever
#in fairness iām sure both past robotniks just assumed her illness would be what killed her h a#sxsg#sxsg spoilers#sonic x shadow generations#shadow the hedgehog#maria robotnik#ark siblings#sonic#comic#my art#doodles#so this was pretty much entirely done 24 hours ago#but ironically was distracted from posting earlier by playing sxsg#and then watching snapcube play it cause her delight is addicting#iām missing 2 chests and 2 bolts and I wanna see if I can pull it off without a guide haha#anyways now Iām thinking about the fact that maria and gerald probably went back to their time assuming maria would die of her sickness#and how that would change their respective behaviors#i bet gerald would be holding out that maria would still live a bit longer#just cause shadow inadvertently revealed heās from at least 50 years in the future due to having met black doom before#(which rewatching cutscenes to remember this quote he Did try to play off a little bit with some sort of#āoh what do you think the alien squid meant by āthis time iāll beat youā thatās so crazyā comment)#so hey maybe it wasnāt a perfect cure but she managed to live another 10-20 years at least?#all the more reason to press harder surely!#meanwhile maria is coming to terms with her mortality at age 14 or whatever she is#frankly I bet she came to terms with it long ago the way she seems to be written#okay back to snapcube

[image id: a four-page comic. it is titled "immortalityā after the poem by clare harner (more popularly known as ādo not stand at my grave and weepā). the first page shows paleontologists digging up fossils at a dig. it reads, ādo not stand at my grave and weep. i am not there. i do not sleep.ā page two features several prehistoric creatures living in the wild. not featured but notable, each have modern descendants: horses, cetaceans, horsetail plants, and crocodilians. it reads, āi am a thousand winds that blow. i am the diamond glints on snow. i am the sunlight on ripened grain. i am the gentle autumn rain.ā the third page shows archaeopteryx in the treetops and the skies, then a modern museum-goer reading the placard on a fossil display. it reads, āwhen you awaken in the morningās hush, i am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight. i am the soft stars that shine at night. do not stand at my grave and cry.ā the fourth page shows a chicken in a field. it reads, āi am not there. i did not dieā / end id]
a comic i made in about 15 hours for my schoolās comic anthology. the theme was āevolutionā
#dinosaur#evolution#comic#prehistoric#animal#wildlife#paleontology#biology#poetry#comics#original#my art#archaeopteryx has no direct living descendants i know#but i wanted something aerial and the dinosaur to bird connection is classic and well known anyway#also the chicken over any other bird is very on purpose#its the mix of truth and comedy and genuineness and the fantastic in the mundane#its me asking you to see something so wonderful in something taken so un-seriously#and to love it both ways#also the jurassic park thing#where someone saw the reconstructed gait of a dino#and said. hey hang on. i know that walk.#and pulled up footage of a chicken walking#which jumpstarted the entire study into the link between dinosaurs and birds#in the end take whatever you want from it i just thought id provide some insight#i always like it when other artists do#the point is that i enjoy when people laugh at the end and when they dont#and i like it when they cry. i like it best when they both laugh and cry. eeaao intent#anyway mourn your losses but to live is to change#also hi guys i finally figured out tipping after 5 months so no more annoying ko-fi link#the antidote to despair is awe

quite frankly idgaf what Luigi Mangioneās politics are, he actually did something to make a change and thatās more than most people can say
#heyyyyy fbi this is totally a joke iām not on his side what noooooooo#edit: good god yāall canāt read between the lines. he did something to TRY and make a change#which is more than yāall complaining have ever done. is that better. is that more clearly spelled out for you.#also iām not a fan of this whole āoh nothing changed nothingās ever gonna change so why botherā attitude#we canāt get complacent just because making change is hard. we have to keep trying#even if it fails over and over we have to keep trying#luigi mangione#united healthcare#brian thompson#us politics#also yeah obviously innocent until proven guilty. sentiment is the same either way

Studying linguistics is actually so wonderful because when you explain youth slang to older professors, instead of complaining about how "your generation can't speak right/ you're butchering the language" they light up and go āreally? Thatās so wonderful! What an innovative construction! Isn't language wonderful?"
#linguistics#gen z slang#english#as people in the reblog pointed out!#most gen z slang comes from (or was appropriated from) aave#honestly I was just excited to talk about how people in my field actually get excited about non standard uses of English#instead of ridiculing speakers#and I tagged incorrectly and didnāt point out the very real issues of language and power and appropriation inherent in modern slang#in that much of it was appropriated#and even that which experiences language change in the wider culture still originated in aave#aave is just as linguistically valid as any other English dialect because it is a proper language#and the grammar is incredible!!!#habitual be is fantastic and an excellent example of how a richer case system or a certain case can render an adverb unnecessary#and the phonology is just beautiful#anyway Iām very sorry#I fucked up

We're not appreciating the Weird Barbie enough. It's said in the movie that she helps everyone who need help while they always see her as someone who's not as good as them. She was friends with all dismissed Barbies and Kens, was there to offer support and safe shelter for everyone who needed it in Kendom, without her nothing in the movie would've been alright. When Stereotypical Barbie calls her "ugly and unwanted" she still helps her.
She was representing a woman in women's world who was pushed aside by other women because she didn't fit in but still had more wisdom and kindness than everyone who thought they're better than her.
#weird barbie#barbie#Barbie movie#everyone looks at her as a queer person i see her as me I'm a straight person who got bullied simply for being different than the rest#but it's beautiful that we all see ourselves in her whatever our story is#cuz that's the point of characters like her#i changed wisness to wisdom sorry english isn't my first language and i forgot which one is more correct

The promised book-roundup January/ February 2024! A list of all the books I read this year until now, reviewed by personal enjoyment and depiction of women (which are very closely correlated). This will be part 1, other parts soon to follow.
I fortunately do have a Goodreads, otherwise I would have already lost track of what I have read so far.
A small disclaimer: This list is ordered by date read and does not reflect on the quality of the books in question.
Let's start!
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro This book is set in a dystopian version of England and follows a group of kids through school to adulthood. The reader slowly learns that these kids have a special role in society and won't generally grow up to be much older than 30. Personal Feelings: We are off to a strong start! Kazuo Ishiguro has received the Nobel prize in literature for his work, and his writing style is accordingly good. I also appreciate that my questions aren't immediately answered but I get to work out what's happening by myself. Rather dystopian, but a very good read! 9/10. Depiction of women etc: Solid. It's written from the point of view of a woman and one of the central relationships in this book is to another woman. Unfortunately, we don't get a close male-female friendship without any sex involved. Also, no queer relationships. 8/10
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir A sci-fi novel set in space with an amnesiac astronaut who figures out that he needs to save the world. Personal Feelings: Not a great book. Andy Weir is not very good at writing literary fiction unfortunately. I personally found the plot rather thin and the way the author is bending over backwards to ensure that some mediocre American guy has to not only save the world, but also another planet is not helpful. Personally didn't find it enjoyable. 3/10 Depiction of women: There's not much to say, because we get a whooping two characters in this book one of which is male and another one is from an alien planet and is referred to by the generic masculine. We do get some women in the flash-back scenes. Brownie points for the fact that one of them is allowed to be a powerful bitch. Deduction of said points for the walking Russian stereotype who also makes it very clear that she is shagging one of her fellow crew members. A lot. 4/10 because the sample size is not big enough.
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt A book told from the perspective of an old woman who has lost her son some 30 years ago and is cleaning in an aquarium. She begins to develop a friendship with the octopus in this aquarium. Parallel to that we follow the story of a 30-year old layabout trying to find his father in the hopes of getting some money out of him. Personal feelings: I personally found that this book was lacking depth. The premise sounded interesting, the way it's done not so much. The characters were flat, and I was relieved when I was finished. 4/10 Depiction of women: Nothing overly remarkable. Plus points for having a 70-year old woman be one of the main characters. 6/10
Sleep by Haruki Murakami This is a short story about a woman who discovers she doesn't need to sleep anymore. Personal Feelings: This might be the best work by Murakami (which isn't saying much, as everything else I read by him was rather bad). Solid writing style, open-ended, a bit of a mystery. I overall enjoyed it. 7/10 Depiction of women: Surprisingly ok. We get a view into the life of a housewife and how she decides that she needs to get enjoyment back in her life. As she no longer sleeps she can do this by reading books. She's still the housekeeper of the family and we have a scene where it's emphasized how good-looking she is. 6/10

The Allegiance of the Ascended Vampire and the New God of Magic
#bloodweave#baldur's gate 3#bg3#gale x astarion#astarion x gale#gale dekarios#astarion ancunin#yes this is about astarion helping gale defeat mystra and take her place with the crown in exchange for gale helping him with the ritual#the āthey can make each other worseā part of their relationship turned to the max#I enjoy them being reluctantly soft for each other more but from time to time I just think about how powerful they could get together#toxic evil boyfriends. take love and twist it up until itās unrecognisable#I like to think that astarion approached gale with that offer after realising no one else in camp is gonna help him#and that he can use gales own hunger for power which backfired when astarion actually became emotionally invested in gale#and after gale kept his word despite everyoneās concerns astarion changed his plan from not fullfilling his end of the bargain to actually#helping gale kill mystra (mostly so that gale could belong to him and him alone. and letting him take the place as a god bc having a god#at you beck and call is definitely appealing. especially one as eager to please as gale)#anyway what I want to say with this is please please please let me kill mystra i donāt even care if the weave gets destroyed again

I kinda wish they bonded over their dead man walking like behaviorā¦
#my art#dragon age#but also I donāt because itās interesting how different they are while their struggle at the core is the same#Anders is so strongly opinionated which causes him to policy these in his own community ā but it allows him to drive change forward#Merrill has more self awarness and empathy but it causes her to go on a road of self sacrifice#(and even that self sacrifice is takenout of her hands)#itās interesting
