I didn’t have Margo entered today cause the judge sucked for her, so it was the boy’s day to shine! Varus earned himself a nice Select and our puppy, Pierre, went Winner’s dog and then Best of Winners for a big fat speciality major!!! I stepped in to handle him in the breed ring and we had a blast, he’s such a fun little guy!

LayMiko is so funny to me because this absolutely revered and powerful priestess from a nation that only just recently opened its borders hops on a boat to a neighboring nation (which is still far away asf, mind you) supposedly because one of her writers (she owns a publishing house btw) needed inspiration. And immediately captures the attention of a random ass astrology scholar - and vice versa - as her first instinct is to announce that the scholar in question has “piqued her interest”.

And as a result, said scholar is left stunlocked, LITERALLY SAYING “Wow. I don’t know how to respond to that . She’s very cool, I hope I can be her friend” [Vine Boom.wav with Homophobic Dog png here] after not even speaking more than 4 sentences with each other.

last book: “Land of Milk and Honey” by C. Pam Zhang—a near-future climate dystopia scifi (I refuse to say cli-fi. I won’t do it. I REFUSE.) that’s sort of like…The Menu meets Venomous Lumpsucker, with bonus toxic yuri and a commentary on "heritage"-oriented conservation ethics and Orientalism.

last movie: "I Saw the TV Glow" which was absolutely right up my alley.

(For some reason, I kept thinking of Chungking Express; they are obviously VERY different films, but there's something about the way both start out with a lot of space and sort of collapse inwards, getting tighter and tighter before releasing the tension in a sudden but understated shift. I don't think this is necessarily a very strong analytical angle, but I might go watch Chungking Express again anyway.)

last show: Does Dropout count? If we’re talking scripted TV, I recently rewatched some IWTV.

sweet/spicy/savory: I think my favorite foods (e.g. nyonya laksa) are actually all of the above! Why pit three bad bitches etc etc. I also genuinely enjoy bitter/sour flavor notes—I don't think my palate is particularly sophisticated, but I do appreciate a little contrast and balance.

current obsession: The un-fun answer is work. It is actually a legit character flaw that I get a bit intense about work; I really need to set better boundaries, but somehow I always have an excuse about why this is totally absolutely just a temporary push while [justification du jour] is going on. It's not great.

Fandom-wise, I’ve been a bit tempted to dip into Wicked lately—shockingly, there aren’t that many Gelphie fics on AO3?? Wild. I do not actually have the time or energy to actually do anything at the moment, but I was into the Oz books as a child + Maguire's Wicked as a teen, it was my very first Broadway show, and I just interviewed someone who worked on the movie. Perhaps most crucially, I also recently read an extremely bad take in a professional review that Wicked is boring because it's about not being mean to green people.

Historically, spite has been a VERY effective motivator for me. I don't have time but I keep thinking...maybe I do? I mean, I don't. But maybe I do?

looking forward to: Seeing a bunch of my friends soon! Ever since I moved back to the US about a year ago, my social life has gotten a little, ah, idiosyncratic. My life is in kind of a weird place right now!

The most famous quote in MotoGP history contains a truth about Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi.

An advertisement said that power without control is useless. The same goes for talent without ambition . Two abstract units that have been used together for a decade when talking about MotoGP riders. Specifically since that April 3, 2011 when Valentino Rossi fell with the Ducati in Jerez and dragged Casey Stoner, who at the end of the race said to him: “Obviously your ambition outweighed your talent". The phrase, said with irony by the peculiar Australian pilot, was not only true. Unintentionally, he was x-raying the essence of the Italian pilot and the contrast to his own . Being two of the best pilots of the 21st century, one has nine world titles and the other only two. A difference of seven world titles that cannot be explained by the difference in talent, but rather by ambition. Rossi's ambition has always been boundless . His life revolves around motorcycling in general and victory in particular. However, if there was one thing that Stoner had boundless, it was his talent for riding a motorcycle. Stoner decided, almost a decade ago, to leave MotoGP and pursue other ambitions more related to family and a peaceful life. A perfectly respectable decision and as valid as any, but one that makes it clear that his ambition as a rider was never in line with his talent . Casey Stoner 's victories and titles were the result of his formidable talent for going fast on a motorcycle. A talent so extraordinary that it allowed him to achieve many triumphs with ease and to become MotoGP world champion without apparent effort when everything was going his way. Rossi, on the other hand, is still on the grid at the age of 42, fighting against riders who were not even born when he was already world champion. With his talent undeniable, if there is one word that defines the career of 'Il Dottore' in motorcycling, it is ambition. Going beyond logic, challenging the limits. Not being satisfied even when being the best. When he was winning titles without breaking a sweat with Honda, he decided to go to Yamaha because his ambition wouldn't let him settle. And when he had already won more world titles than anyone else in the premier class with Yamaha, he decided to go to Ducati with the ambition of being the first rider in history to be champion with three different brands. The creation of the Academy and the Sky VR46 are explained in the same way: he also wanted to be a vehicle for transmitting knowledge. His ambition for motorcycling is such that it overwhelms his own body and he has to make room for himself in others. And this also explains why he gives up a golden retirement: for the ambition of achieving more. One more podium, one more victory. So, yes: Stoner was right. That day, Rossi's ambition outstripped his talent. But not just that day: every day for the past 25 years. If it weren't for that, the Italian would have a few less titles and would have spent many years watching the races on TV. Because talent alone can lead you to glory, but it is a fleeting glory. It is the mixture with ambition that makes you eternal.

finally got around to moving all the rescued files on the new laptop. skimmed around to familiarize myself with my orig fic library.

... accidentally spent the evening reading a 100K of a knight/dragon romance.* the first quarter was an incredible start of a second draft. the rest was an actually finished first draft i think i wrote in two weeks. and i played a cruel prank on myself, because i got hardcore invested halfway through the second draft and then, to my horror, remembered that the whole thing has an utter despair type of ending.

the knight is one of the most characters i've ever written. a changeling whose top priority at all times is to embody the ideals of the culture that condemns his fundamental nature. a knight in shining armor who is a bigger threat to the communities than the monsters he's fighting for them. a walking bundle of ritualized self harm. has visions of a saintly lady whose smile makes him want to be a dog at her feet but also to kill everyone and then himself. leaving the fantasy catholic cult, getting an autism diagnosis, and transitioning would fix him.

the dragon doesn't want to fix him. it wants to make him worse in novel and exciting ways.

*actually more of an experiment in how unhinged and edgy i'm able to go. but there definitely are romantic parts. horror romance. tho it has some promise as an actual interesting type of romance if i were to clean it up a bit...
