Woke (2020): BBC Sherlock is an incredibly flawed series run by an egotistical writer, it never deserved the hype and is actively bad on so many fronts (especially representation)

Bespoke (2024): BBC Sherlock is flawed and bogged down by increasingly poor writing, which many fans refused to see while it was airing, leading to hugely misplaced expectations (particularly for the final series), AND it has the seeds of some compelling characterizations and portrayals, some genuinely solid performances, and touches--albeit imperfectly--on complexities that are still being discussed today (particularly as it relates to the relationship between Sherlock and John). The huge cultural impact of the show has created a massive pendulum effect in its public perception, leading to most people today remembering a caricature of the show (whether positive or negative) rather than appreciating its nuanced merits and failings...that being said Season 4 sucked

Lrb dear god, this reminded me of that time when Alfred-chan got sooooo mad at my post explaining why fans should respect bisexual headcanons for Maria and Malenia instead of pretending like they're canonically lesbians and that they get oppressed and erased by mxf ships with them. They kept vagueing that post for like a MONTH in their blog including in tags under reblogs of Maria fanart, passively-aggressively changed their url to character+sexuality to "spite" me and then even made a sockpuppet account to start shit with me in the comments.

They deactivated when me and Val completely obliterated their "you cultivate lesbiphobic following by telling people why they should respect all sexuality headcanons instead of acting cultish or assuming their experiences and stereotypes equal canon confirmation" garbage with actual facts and logic tho but I screenshotted everything fjthfgfj (I learned to document everything the hard way after they've changed the she/they pronouns to they/they pronouns ONLY to accuse me of misgendering, so thank you for making me wiser I guess 😎). Even more vile, as they, a white person, larped as an Arab in that sockpuppet to hold even MORE "privilege" against me in discussion gjtjfh Because for them race, gender or sexuality are just badges of honor and dishonor, they don't see these as traits of actual human beings. And Dr Eugene X, who worked with them and weaponized her race to accuse everyone who disagreed with her of racism, didn't bat an eye at such a terrible act too?? As usual, rules are not for their friends, lol

It is not even the worst thing Alfred did, and yet all of this just, just, JUST because I wrote a point on why bisexual headcanon people did nothing wrong and there is no ground to claim something is canon when it isn't. 🤦‍♂️ Like, they were soooo convinced that I hated lesbian headcanons and that I'd feel angry if they called Lady Maria a lesbian, when what I was angry at is this exact toxic behavior in the fandom. No matter how much you like a headcanon, don't be a bitch about it. Maria doesn't """belong""" to any gender or sexuality, she belongs to anyone who likes her and is invested in her complexity as a character!!!

Yet, apparently, common Malenia simps / Finlay shippers are no better than common Maria simps / Mariadeline shippers. i dunno it kinda bothers me sometimes to see characters who are referred to with they/them pronouns in games described as "ambiguously gendered" or "gender left unclear" or "gender unstated" by fans and stuff like. yeah absolutely they are sometimes that. sometimes the creator had a gender in mind for them while creating them and just didn't think to talk about it in the game. but also, like. sometimes characters can just be nonbinary? and it makes me kinda sad that everyone's first reaction to they/them pronouns in games is "oh, they have a binary gender, it's just up to the player/not stated in-game".

Are you at all familiar with and/or do you have opinions on Faustus: that Damned Woman by Chris Bush? I feel like you would have interesting thoughts on it.

Kinda sorta? I always get kinda picky about Faustus gender swaps that focus it entirely on Being a Woman in a Man's World even though it's a completely sensible approach and one that you kind of have to take if you set it in the historical period, since a woman wouldn't typically have access to the kind of institutional learning that a man would. But also the author of this one tends to see the original play as a story about (male) privilege and hubris and I look at it as being at least as much about isolation and spiritual trauma (the real eternal damnation is the friends we made along the way!) and I think genderswapping that approach would probably be more interesting to me, if done well. (It could also be pretty problematic since my take on Marlowe's Faustus is that he's less ambitious than he thinks he is, because he's really just lonely and wants to do humanities outreach and dick around with his boyfriend. That's more expected from women, so "companionship is ultimately more important than ambition" isn't as interesting a take in that regard, although I think it would work better with a female-presenting Mephistopheles. But the spiritual side of it--the idea that Faustus feels he's damned anyway so why not live while he can--can cross genders quite easily.)

I dunno, possibly I'm bad at solidarity: the implicit argument that being a woman is already hell doesn't actually interest me that much, I guess? It isn't something that resonates with the way I personally experience the world, even as a cisgender woman, certainly not as much as the original play does. But that gets into my complicated relationship with my own gender so I'll just say that Bush's kind of treatment is no doubt really important/resonant for a lot of people but doesn't do it for me.
