I really enjoy seeing which of my arts get tagged with #TOS or #AOS because unless it’s really blatant I’m never intentionally drawing one or the other
I scroll through the tags and nod sagely and go: seems the High Nerd Council has deemed this art has AOS vibes, I shall reflect on this.

Imagine you're in the world of Transformers. Imagine you woke up randomly in the med bay and you're a giant robot.
You don't know which version of Transformers this is, the movies or the TV series or the comics? You don't know.
But you need to pick a faction and join it right now.

I really love the design of Nina's room here. It looks very realistic for one a high schooler would have. But of course Nina needs some special accommodations and they make sense. Her room is cute and believable. I adore the stickers on her bed. What a fun little detail. There's a bunch of posters showing that she has a wide variety of interests, and even an amp.
The pom-pom topped pencil is just *chef's kiss*
Nina's just a regular girl who happens to have aquatic traits and I love that.

TBHX Headcanons
In honor of TBHX coming out tomorrow: Headcanons for all the characters!
Based of vibes
Tumblr media
No. 1: X
He thrives off coffee and sugar, sleep schedule of hell
Eats the sugar packs by pouring them into his mouth
If one of the younger heroes messes up, he's gonna nag them about it (bc he doesn't want to see them get hurt)
No. 2: Queen
Really good at first-aid
Used to dance, doesn't anymore
Light-weight, gets drunk very fast
No. 3: Dragon Boy
Terrible at picking up social cues
Does not think before he speaks
Absolutely can and will sulk if he loses an argument
No. 4: Ghostblade
The Responsible One™️
Always hanging around somewhere but never actively engaging with anyone
Allergic to cats
No. 5: The Johnnies
Big Johnny can purr | Little Johnny enjoys gardening
Big Johnny's Berserk Mode can absolutely be chill | Little Johnny is the least competitive hero of the top 10
Big Johnny REFUSES to try cat or dog food | Little Johnny is very insecure about people's opinions on him but good at hiding it
No. 6: Loli
Never leave her and Little Johnny alone. They once ended up staying awake two nights in a row.
Believes in Santa. Doesn't matter how old she is. She believes in Santa.
Dislikes coffee, loves energy drinks.
No. 7: Lucky Cyan
Adores sweets
Always wanted a dog, never had the time
Regularly babysits Ahu's owner
No. 8: Ahu
Does not want to be seen as the animal mascot but would get jealous if a regular animal would be brought to the Hero Tower
Regularly spends time with Big Johnny
One time he made the other heroes babysit his owner. They lost her in the Tower. He never found out
No. 9: E-Soul
Everyone jokes that he can't get drunk. Alcohol tolerance 10/10 (doesn't even like alcohol)
Cries at sad movies. Do not show him movies where the dog dies. He'll bawl. No one ever expects it
Record holder of "who stayed awake the longest" (he made it four days and then promptly passed out, to this day no one knows WHY he was awake for that long)
No. 10: Nice
Tired of smiling and keeping the perfect persona up all the time
Sees dancing as an escapism
The type to hide injuries

can I say something is this a safe space. it's kind of fascinating that ford is meant to read as a deeply repressed character and a capital s Scientist no less but he leads this other half of his life entirely dedicated to the occult. in the 70's-80's. like the historical connotations of the occult and what they represented in the united states at least seems kind of interesting in this context. for no reason in particular I find the dual aspects of "extremely dedicated to presenting as a logical, steadfast researcher trying to earn respect and social acceptance to the point of hinging all of his self worth on this vision for the future working out" and "deeply tied to the paranormal and "unsavory black magic" and everything Weird/freakish but feels like he needs to hide this aspect of himself from even the people closest to him" Very interesting. hiding six-fingered hands compulsively behind his back even if it's the emblem he puts on his journals. "what are you attracted to?" and "maybe you're simply attracted to things that hurt you" from two different points in the book. sweet dreams (are made of this) on the record player. hey does anyone know what that tarot card with a snake on it is meant to represent

Concept: Santa has a memory-modifying machine and that's why parents are never suspicious of the extra presents under the tree.
[I may or may not write this as a proper story some day but in case I don't, have a look]
They all just have an implanted memory of buying it themselves. For people who are in poverty and struggling, this means that Santa does have to limit himself to 'realistic' gifts, but if a kid would be happy with a really cool puzzle or some candy they're not usually able to get, it's easy to frame that in the memory as "Oh yeah, I think I saw that they were giving away bags of this chocolate for any purchase over $20, so I grabbed an extra can of beans" or something.
If a kid's been really good, he can add some sort of "Parents entered a giveaway" memory for a bigger present, but too many of those might arouse suspicion.
Also possible is localized charities that get a lot of "anonymous" gifts that are actually from Santa.
And the volunteers that 'decide' which gift goes where are undercover elves who are making sure the presents end up with the kids who really want them.
@threebea said:
The rule with Santa is if an "adult" is aware of the magic he loses his power which is why he needs to go to lengths to make himself seem like a hybrid of commercialization and religion. He will definitely do other things if he has no justifiable way of getting something to a kid who doesn't get presents from their parents for whatever reason. Can range from extra luck like vending machine gave doubles or bus actually waited. He will reward goodness of children it might not be as much as he would like but he does what he can to continue being able to do it. He can't go as hard as he would like because too big and even memory modification won't be enough but he will try to get away with big stuff.
This kid was so good that he is rigging an xbox giveaway for them.
There's an elf that has to be like: No no, that's too big. Santa: I can spin it I can spin it. Santa also has a heist team to do the rigging of big ticket items. Sometimes they'll just set up a fake contest but sometimes they're like: This is our window, operation BMX is a go. Elf: There are not enough contests in this small town to justify this, Santa. You need to make a choice. Santa: Rich guy who wants to do Christmas miracle for children? Elf: You get one a year you wanna use that card? Santa: [narrows eyes] …. Two but in different countries Elf: This is not a negotiation. Santa: I feel like it is.
Exhausted second in command trying to keep Santa within the realm of reason but this jolly old man wants to be doing good so much.
Vigilante-ism
Vigisanty-ism Santa: We could haunt Jeff Bezos we haven't done that in awhile. Elf: No one will ever believe it don't be greedy.

not enough discussion about the gavins' complicated relationship with feminine-coded/beauty products, i don't think.
#for klavier because it's not as direct it's about how we never see him actually wearing lipstick? even though apollo literally attends#a concert of his which is where you'd most expect him to wear makeup. but apparently he just doesnt. or at least not in public#klavier gavin#kristoph gavin#i feel like there are several ways you can read into it. the misogyny/toxic masculinity one is really obvious clearly with kristoph's#singling out of men specifically and klavier's (probably accidental?) condescending manner of calling women 'fraulein' plus his general#mildly patronising attitude towards many of the women in the game (also probably unintentional)#(i think he's trying to be charming and it's coming off wrong to some of them. like ema. and me.)#but i feel like there's also maybe an element of... inherent perfecfionism to it? like both of these products are conventionally beautifyin#products and kristoph while he is open to showing people he uses nail polish specifically chooses one that's clear and missable unless you#see him apply it. he also feels the need to justify his use of it and specifically spell it out as something he chooses to do rather than#needs to do even though duh. that should be obvious.#idk there's just something about his seeming need to take control of that narrative that i find interesting. his need to spin it into a#'there's nothing wrong with my nails but I had the foresight to see that even the smallest parts of my appearance should be kept immaculate#and it's a choice i'm making to refine an already adequate part of my personage /not/ to cover some unsightly defect.' the need to emphasis#that specifically is so. hm. and with klavier i could see it being a case of him liking makeup liking the pops of colour yet being unwillin#to admit to it because he's afraid that other people might see it as him being dissatisfied with his own appearance regardless of if he is#or isn't. or even just perceiving colourful makeup as being unseemly because it's so overt and unnatural.#like i can see this as them both viewing 'real' beauty to be that which is inherent to a person and seemingly effortless#thus somehow negating the beauty which one achieves through cosmetics or other external means.#and if you want to use external means to achieve beauty or neatness or whatever then your only valid options are those which blend into you#natural state. like clear nail polish. or really awful spray tan.#i feel like klavier's less confined by these ideas (if they hold merit at all) considering he actually owns coloured lipstick and he wears#jewellery (admittedly quite 'masculine' jewellery no gems or pearls or anything like that but jewellery nonetheless) but i think it just#makes it more interesting that he doesnt seem quite able to cross the line anyway. like it's that ingrained into his system.#anyway that's all i've got. you guys should tell me what you think too#annotations

So I was throwing myself back into hell again (starting to replay the Watcher), minding my own business, when I suddenly had a flashback to that one lore pearl from Subterranean (it’s the teal one, I think), and went “wait… wait a second.”
“If you leave a stone on the ground, and come back some time later, it’s covered in dust.  This happens everywhere, and over several lifetimes of creatures such as you, the ground slowly builds upwards.”
Implying the dust falls from the sky, since the Void Sea is what lies below, right?  So… if it’s falling from above, somewhere…
(Endgame region spoilers below the cut)
Tumblr media
There are falling stars in Outer Rim.  The sandstorms here have the same green as the stars in it.  There are things in the background apparently called STARCATCHERS.  The architecture here is OLD.  It’s Depths architecture, the same civilization that predated the Benefactors/Ancients/whatever you want to call the iterators’ creators by who knows how long, and it’s being buried in the sands by the ever-blowing sandstorms.
I looked at Shattered Terrace next since it’s the other ending-related endgame area and…
Tumblr media
It’s newer architecture, more akin to the architecture we see in the base game, but it’s falling apart.  Bits of rubble are floating off in defiance of gravity, while other parts of it have collapsed and been worn down into the dust you see blowing on the wind.
In Outer Rim, we see the ground being built up with stardust.  In Shattered Terrace, we see the world dissolving.  The two endgame areas of the Watcher are representations of the beginning and end of that very cycle of the world that Moon explains to us with the Subterranean pearl.

the canon real way shadow crystals are made is that they're pieces chipped off the magic glass that appears when you try to walk over the unwalkable space on the map. when gaster fell into the core he broke the magic glass and a bunch of it fell into his pocket. mystery solved.

I'm thinking about the absurdity of everything that happened to the Mighty Nein when they finally make it to Rosohna.
Like, imagine being the Essek for that.
Here's a group of adventurers. They have a surprising number of humans in their midst. That's a little suspicious considering the war with the Empire. After a few questions, they appear to be the world's most obvious and transparent spies. Like... Come on, they don't even really seem to know the region.
Well, whatever, guess they're gonna be treated appropriately-
Oh, that's a beacon. In a moment of stress, they proceed to pull out the most valuable relic of your people, which was stolen, or lost, and just... hand it back over to you.
You (as Essek), know about 95% of how they got their hands on it, because you've been keeping tabs on it because you're the one who handed it over in the first place. And here it is. In the throne room. They have no idea what it is, but they know the Bright Queen wants it, and they seem to earnestly want to make friends, and really would just like one of their members to get her husband back.
And the whole thing gets even stupider because you (that is to say Essek), decide that your best chance of keeping everything secure is to be the one who keeps an eye on them, and these dumbasses categorically refuse to stop trying to befriend you. You are specifically, actively trying to stop them from getting you caught and executed for treason, and they're like 'hey, you want to come over for dinner or something? We have a hot tub.'

Thinking about Mass Effect, as you do, and how I'm kind of sad that the way it's been engraved in pop culture has more to do with the way internet reacted to it at the time than what the actual game is about. Yes sure, it's about romance (and not that much all things considered) and it's pulpy (but not solely because of hot lady aliens), but it's also intricate worldbuilding that touches on a lot of sharp ideas, and a complicated tug-of-war between a genuine and vulnerable belief in reconciliation and community VS post 9-11 US military propaganda and steadfast belief in heroic exceptionalism, and the melancholic yet energizing mood, and the daring narrative systems, and so so much more than the 'We'll Bang OKs" and the "There's No Shepard Without Vakarian" and the whole ME3 ending situation
It's all there, but I'm sad the impact of the series is often reduced to (what I think is) the least interesting parts of its sum
