I hope you take this as the compliment it is intended to be, but you strike the same chord of irreverence-as-love, jokes-to-showcase-sencerity that I get from Chuck Tingle, and I adore both of you.
You have bestowed the greatest honour upon me.
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#lan wangij#wei wuxian#digital art#ask#Thank you very much; I do take it as the compliment you intended it to be B*)#Mr. Tingle is a legend in both grindset and vibes. To be even 0.1% striking a similar chord is an aspiration of mine.#I also want to honour the effort I put into this parody book cover. Which was a *lot* more than one would think.#Covers were analyzed. I did research and took notes. I learned how to download fonts. 4 different programs were used.#This file is also poster sized (A4 dimensions)! I thought It would make the joke funnier for some reason.#Chuck Tingle's style is very iconic and fun to replicate. Despite the time intensive labour - I had a blast making this!#I admit to skimming most of the chapter this is based off of just to fact check a few details but boy did I learn things.#Wei Wuxian canonically has CAKE. Tiny waist and a fat ass.#I took several more notes but I will warn you now that I can't *not* find smut writing to be very funny.#This was pure chaos. Unbridled chaos. WWX really did shove a sword up his ass to bully dream-LWJ.#The need to be a little shit trumps saftey I guess.#There is a 99.9% chance I will not cover the extras so this is likely all the fans of those chapters will get from PD-MDZS.

So, I’m awkward with actual humans. It’s not paranoia about my hacked governor module, and it’s not them; it’s me. I know I’m a horrifying murderbot, and they know it, and it makes both of us nervous, which makes me even more nervous. Also, if I’m not in the armor then it’s because I’m wounded and one of my organic parts may fall off and plop on the floor at any moment and no one wants to see that.
one last fancomic to finish off the year, from asr this time!!

This is not happening any time soon, but if I were to write a Wordpress blog about oni, would you guys follow me there
#I collect oni lore like spare change#but I don't typically bring it up here because I see how Gotouge drew from folklore themes but made oni something distinct to this universe#so even though it's fun to find similarities I don't find them direct homage worth treating as meta#BUT ALSO#it would be nice to have a nerdy project that I can actually share with people who know me irl#I mention here and there that I “i blog about Japanese culture as seen in KnY” but I don't actually want to share it#BECAUSE I MAKE FANWORK#ya know???#but also like#if I were to do a new project which could hopefully eventually lead to publishing a book for a wide audience#it would be very nice to start with an encouraging reader base

I miss them so bad (Dick and Damian)
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#damian wayne#dick grayson#ITS JUST NOT THE SAME MAN#idk i was reading nightwing must die (again...) bc i was in a funk and saw another post saying how fans exaggerate the closeness btwn them#and on the one hand i get it. there is a very rosy portrayal of their relationship you'll come across in fanon#and they weren't very close at the beginning of their relationship#but man. reading Nightwing must die again was like#YES they fight. damian instigates it and while dick tries to exercise patience he does fight back/lash out on occasion#but despite all that it's still emphasized how important the two are to each other#when dick is forced to picture a future where he's lost his way he pictures damian being the one to bring him back#not necessarily bc damian is his favorite person on the planet but bc he gave damian robin. for a lot of practical reasons-#-but also bc how far damians come is (i think at least based on this arc) a testament to dick that hes doing Something right#both as a hero/person#damian is more than just a burden saddled on him (although there's an element of that in their batman and robin run)#he's also a last remaining connection to bruce when he's gone (remembering where he comes from) AND he's training damian+#-his own way! with a dash of tough love and workaholic spirit inherited but also a lot of patience and focus on being More than the darkness#idc what ppl say nightwing must die makes sense for these two. its a retcon but one that works imo#that dick buried his head in the sand about how much damian meant/the responsibility he had to him bc it was a commitment he was afraid of#and how damian ultimately was a point of maturation for dick even if he went back to being Nightwing#they were SO goddamn close and now they're still close but only in ways that are implied#and their bond is deemphasized in comparison to each others bond w/ say bruce. which i think is a shame#it was a wrinkle! a fun wrinkle that the batfamily had that in some ways dick understood damian better than Bruce-#-even if he didn't feel like he could handle the responsibility of raising him full time#it kills me that bc of the n52 we never got the handover of the batman mantle (and damian) from dick to bruce#next nightwing writer...include a flashback to that moment AND have damian appear in the book in present....AND MY LIFE IS YOURS!!!#anyway. dick is damians brother but also damian a little bit imprinted on him like a baby duck and its rubbed off on dick#they're partners they're mentor mentee but most importantly they were batman and robin. and they were the greatest#NOT bc it was all peaches and roses but bc they cared for each other exponentially despite all that

blessings roll call! add on in the tags if you so wish <3
#new (to me) car! huge answer to prayer!#was lowkey so stressed about car issues I was actively losing sleep over it.#having a reliable comfy and relatively cheap car now is such a blessing#dad very generously emptied his CDs out of the cool 30-yr-old compact holder I've been coveting for years and gave it to me#so now I get to party like it's 2007 driving around with my CDs expertly contained and catalogued#got accepted into the OTA program I was applying for all through the summer!#so gotta set up classes for that#more good school news is I've already done all the the co-reqs for next semester's OTA classes#meaning I only have 2 classes + choir which I'll do for fun and thus can work more hours and also have time for an actual life#looking forward to a more restful semester#time with family and friends has been so precious lately#even though it's been scarce it's been lovely and joyful when it happens#looking forward to the holidays actually for the first time in years!#usually they're dreaded because of family drama but I think I can manage to find joy anyway#and also choose to spend less time or no time in or around the drama#looking forward to break. three more weeks of classes and then freedom for five glorious weeks.#looking forward to Advent especially!#also made soup today and it's so good#thankful for a good job and for getting along with my coworkers#and immensely thankful for books especially audiobooks without which I would not have survived this year#and for the Gospel of John. it's holding me together rn. struggling through some faith questions and some anger towards God#the last few months#but as long as I can stay in scripture...it still seems worth it.#blessings

It's sort of inevitable in D&D, especially in a game with a lot of calls to the idea of fate and a lot of complex parental relationships, that you'll touch on breaking cycles, but man do Imogen and Ashton seem to be lined up to be some of the most clear examples of it: Imogen, suddenly leaving her home, trying to learn about herself and stop her nightmares and get rid of her powers, becoming frustrated when information is scarce, even flirting with the idea of joining the Vanguard when it becomes an option...but deciding against it, staying with her friends, even finding a different way to ease the worst aspects of her powers will still retaining what's good. And Ashton, also broken and of burning purpose, also seeking power they believed themselves to be owed, but, in theory, fated not to deceive and destroy but share their gifts with someone else and use it to end a cult of personality rather than start one. They are both one really bad experience away from becoming their parents, but they have the opportunity and the information not to make the same mistakes.
#also. any old kingdom books fans in the house thinking about...sealing that which was once sealed with remnants. bc i sure am.#anyway. what this is getting at is like. ashton and imogen's appeal IS that they are VERY close to their shitty parents#but have the power to choose differently (and in imogen's case have done so)#critical role#imogen temult#ashton greymoore#i'm SO ready for Rau'shan based on the hints i think it will be a FUN fucking trial to get the spark.#edited to include a clarifying final sentence bc people were doing the uwu they're so GOOD thing again#i HATE the uwu they're so good thing. what are you all. Calvinists.

Why is this book about 1880s London Jews so relatable to the 2020s American Roman Catholic experience?
In Amy Levy's Reuben Sachs, you've got:
The community that is at once fully part of the modern world while having an insular nature (and the amount of modern vs. insular varies based on the person and family)
The people who ignore their religion 99% of the year, but wouldn't even consider skipping services on the important holidays
The ultra-traditionalists who go so intense on holding to traditions that a lot of other members of their religion side-eye them
The kids who go to services only because their parents force them to, or who rebel and refuse to go because they don't see the point or don't believe in God
The new convert who is more zealous than, like, 90% of the people who were born into this religion
A family with its very specific blend of religious opinions and inside jokes that's fully aware that they're baffling to outsiders
This book was apparently meant to be a realistic portrait of Jewish life (in response to Daniel Deronda and its (according to Levy) highly unrealistic and over-idealized portrayal of Jews), and my goodness, did she succeed in capturing what it's like to live in a culturally religious community in a rapidly secularizing world.
#books#victober#reuben sachs#amy levy#i'm only about a third of the way through but the impression's already so strong i have to talk about it#i thought the anglican church drama was relatable but this cranks it up to 11#also i need to say that while i'm struggling through two books by people who are major overwriters#it is *such* a relief to read something by an under-writer#it's snappy it's quick it's witty it's concise#the oscar wilde vibe is still going strong#i have no clue how these family connections work#and her habit of underwriting is making it hard to differentiate this huge cast#but it's still fun to meet them all#also: love the deeply middle-class vibe#we've got your bankers and your businessmen#but one guy shows up and he's just...a dentist#so refreshing so real#also: i adore the way levy writes family relationships#maybe my favorite thing about her#all these people who are fully aware of each others' quirks#will constantly poke fun at each other but also love each other#in a way that's equal parts fondness and exasperation and good humor#there's something about her style that resonates so well with my interior personality/thought process#and maybe with my writing style/approach to stories#which is very weird because as people we're total opposites#but it feels like hanging out with a friend#anyway i prayed for her last night

re: the fiction/nonfiction kinsey scale poll. just know that I am barely restraining myself from giving nonfiction book recs at all times. there is SO MUCH FUN NONFICTION THAT IS SUPER READABLE AND INTERESTING take my hand we can go pick out some books together
#i say. promptly after recommending a book about infrastructure with my whole chest.#okay but fr I do actually read nonfiction as a method of combatting existential dread#feel like the world is terrible and you have no control? read about someone doing some really niche work.#you feel better about strangers and also you have more knowledge! which is always a boon!#if you want something applicable to this part of the internet super quick/readable and very fun. read the infinite playground.#if you want to feel like you are being led on a lovely nature hike and learning about the world in the process. braiding sweetgrass.#if you want to feel like you're with the adventurous kids who go urban exploring after dark. underland.#if you want to get the same experience as reading a thriller. fire weather.#i could go on!#unlikeable female characters. being mortal. the end of everything. ENTANGLED LIFE#man i wanna go to the bookstore 😔

best KJ Charles novels? I have a bunch of long flights coming up…
best standalones:
Think of England - mystery! intrigue! it's safer to be caught in flagrante delicto by one's hosts than to be caught spying, so take your trousers off, my good sir!
Band Sinister - a series of unfortunate events introduces country virgin and landed scoundrel. NO MURDER AT ALL in this one. lowest stakes KJC novel by far (if you don't care about A Lady's Reputation!).
The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting - fortune hunter gets sniffed out by his mark's uncle, loses fantastically to him at cards, offers to pay in kind. this one is just. so. horny.
best series:
The Doomsday Books (2 books) - these are so fun. smugglers, hidden treasure, Kent accents, beetles?!, terrible relatives, romance, murder, etc. all that good KJC shit.
The Will Darling Adventures (3 books) - post-war secret society shenanigans, ft. current bookseller, previous vicious killer in the trenches. splashes of PTSD, Bright Young Things, gangsters, the secret service, communists, sidecars. truly rip-roaring. and the sex scenes are top notch.
#special mentions to:#A Charm of Magpies (3 books)#shamans and China and dark magic and all sorts... very Catered To Me rather than Actually Very Good#ALSO A Seditious Affair (Society of Gentlemen book 2)#an amazing book sandwiched in between two bang average books which annoyingly requires the first one as necessary context#very saucy and fun though#HOPE THIS ISN'T TOO LATE FOR YOUR FLIGHTS#answered#books#book rec

the x files au where everything is exactly the same except mulder takes home the child neanderthal from the jersey devil episode and raises them as his own
#you could make this super fun and invoke a sense of deep Guilt on behalf of mulder because he feels he got the mom neanderthal killed#and then you can also make it fun in “c'mon sport let's go throw the ball around kind of way”#i imagine him at the library checking out books on early humanoid species and how to parent at the same time#the librarian silently checking the books out and wondering what on earth this man could possibly be needing such resources for#imagine scully's reaction to this. i can't quite place it beyond initial Disbelief and then subsequent trying to be as supportive as she ca#and she would probably be also very Nerdy about the whole thing. because she strikes me as someone well-read on the subject and fascinated#we also know she at least has some experience wrangling children which would be relevant#i imagine a bunch of anthropologists perpetually hovering over the child to study him but they have to be Chill and not disrupt his life#so the kid just grows up thinking they have a ton of really cool and supportive aunts and uncles over all the time#meanwhile they scientists are taking notes furiously as they see if he can adapt to playing a gameboy with the other kids#idk someone probably thought of this idea before but it's funny to me#why would the kid go to him and not someone far more qualified? idk i'm just playing pretend in my brain :)#this thought was prompted by me wondering if you time traveled and brought an early humanoid to the modern era do you think the kid#would still play minecraft? i say yes. probably.#i saw a post about something similar years ago and i wonder about it. i hope you would like cartoons and subway surfers neanderthals.#the x files#txf#fox mulder

Jack Aubrey, walking past the men who framed him for a crime, ruined his life and career, and directly caused his public humiliation in the pillory: “I wouldn’t kick him if I had the chance. I feel contempt and nothing more. I have my job back.”
Stephen Maturin, already planning how he is going to slit Wray’s throat in a dark alley and dissect his body while roasting his personality with a fellow anatomist: “me neither, my soul.”
#my posts#Aubrey Maturin#the thirteen gun salute isn’t my favorite book but it does have fun bits#and it is also so very strongly a book about Stephen looking back at his old self and reflecting how much he and Jack have grown#and maybe it’s that which causes him to go so far with Wray#bc even though the o’brian prose is so careful and restrained and regency#it’s Stephen who is actually the one that had the most wild and intense emotional jags#and Stephen was just reading his old diaries from the first book and remembering how flat and miserable he was before Jack#and reflecting on how proud he is of how Jack has grown and matured#when one has a Golden Retriever Boyfriend one must simply kill and dissect the people who wrong him. it is Innate.

Btw I'm basically speedrunning now
#Rain world#game clips#I've gotten a lot better since I made this video but I still love it. This will be my tenth challenge and I've spent like 7 hours on it lol#I mean 7 hours of actual attempts before I realized I need to get better to stand a chance.#So I'm smacking my friends in the face with rocks while sliding or have to wait for everyone to catch up all the time#Because now I can't NOT use the cool movement tech I've learned. It's so fun and useful and ✨fast✨#It's actually saved our lives so many times. Nothing funnier than yelling ''BEND OVER'' to my buddy and absolutely booking it#Also since we've delved into the world of modded regions it's been extremely nice for the bs parkour people include for no reason 😭#If I'M struggling good god it must be tough for casual players#SPEAKING OF MODS! I've been hanging out and talking with modders and oh my god they're all crazy#One of my favs was the deserted wastelands dev who was just. So jaded. it was so funny#And we're playing thru Drought which is very interesting. It has like. Multiple endings and stuff#Finally know who that striped black cat is lmao#Gonna post some fanart in the future because I'm actually in love. Moon is such a mom in this campaign#It's also a horribly glitchy mess that destroys your game files but wwyd
