WIP Wednesday 💌

I've been slowly inching my way through this one the last couple of weeks, but on the bright side I feel like we're nearly there (except for the fact that it is looking to round out somewhere around 10k instead of the initially estimated 4k but what's new, really). anyway, here, have this tiny snippet for today.✨

“Tommy, wait.” Buck blurted out in a sudden panic, prompting Tommy to stop in his tracks and turn back from the doorway.

“Yeah?”

“I—” The words were hanging off of the very tip of his tongue, sticking to the roof of his mouth as he swallowed and tried to push them past his teeth, but the seconds were ticking by and he just stood there with his mouth agape, no sounds coming out, until: “Call me. W-when you get there, just- just call me.”

For a moment, there was a flicker of surprise flashing across Tommy’s face, before his features melted into a gentle smile.

“Of course. I’ll call you every day, alright?”

“Uh, y-yeah, alright.” Buck fisted the metal in his hand a little harder, trying to ground himself as he watched Tommy wrap his own hand around the doorknob, ready to leave.

“Goodnight, Evan.” His voice was soft like a caress against Buck’s skin and Buck had to close his eyes for a moment as it washed over him — by the time he opened them again, Tommy was gone.

“Night.” He breathed into the large, empty space of his apartment.

Having watched MAWS S2, your "Coddling Colonizer Guilt" essay flashed through my mind repeatedly alongside "Oh man, this crew is nowhere as smart about this as they think they are, and fans are going to applaud them regardless". At the same time, my brother and I were laughing at how blatantly bad the writing was, especially in the finale; but seeing people on Twitter unironically praise the writing was weird, especially when they're usually more critical of mediocre DC stuff.

asdfaf I can think of a couple of reasons why that essay in particular is on your mind for S2 and I don't doubt the crew would fumble hard on that subject. But yeah, it's frustrating how most people just aren't engaging critically with this show like you said.

I've personally had to disengage with "maws defenders" (different from "maws enjoyers" who are able to like the show but still understand my criticism of it) because I've come to learn that discussing with them is fruitless. In order to believe that maws is a well written show and defend it, you'd have to have bought into the show's short-term memory loss of its own events and contradictory writing. I found myself having to remind these fans of what happened in the very show they're supposedly a fan of. I end up recognizing that I understand the show better than they do.

Worse, I'd hate to engage with maws fans who are morally performative about defending the show. The moment Lois jumped off the building in S1 was when the writing was so transparently bad that it trended on twidder and split the fandom in half. So in order to cope, maws defenders say "you can't handle messy women" and "hating how lois is written means you're a misogynist" ignoring all logic in the show and how badly Lois' motivations were written. So the show builds that "if u hate this show you're a bigot" armor and the only winner is the showrunner(and the company)'s performative representation.

There's plot holes and contradictions in the very first scene in episode 1 season 1 of maws. It doesn't take a detective to see how bad the writing is if you pay attention.

fckin. i've watched Tin Can Bros' masterpiece Spies are Forever a bajillion times. I've listened to the soundtrack a bajllion times. when my phone malfunctioned and I lost all the music I downloaded from my dad's giant folder of pirated mp3s, the fuckin Spies Are Forever soundtrack was one of the 3 albums that remained bc it was one of the only ones I'd actually bought. which means i listened to it over and over and over until I was able to get student-discounted Spotify (and tbh i do still listen to it over and over, just on Spotify).

and I JUST NOW realized that Curt's beard from the 4 years after Owen's death is a double entendre.

the only other queer person he knew in his line of work just fucking died. of course he gets a beard.

Dick should be Romani. Jason should be Hispanic. Damian is half-Arab. I don't know where we fall on Tim, I guess he can be the only white boy in the Robins. /shrug

Tim's upper crust New Jersey rich class, he is white as hospital wall paint. Dick just is Romani, that's straight up canon at this point, I don't know whether they've made it so both of his parents were Romani but I know that at least John Grayson has been Romani for some time in canon, which would make Dick at least half. Damian's a bit harder to pin down because DC has flip-flopped a lot on exactly what the al Ghul heritage is, Ra's I believe is half Chinese and half Arab (where exactly? who the Hell knows apparently the entire Arab world is a monolith for this people) and Talia has that and I think her mom was Arabic so Damian is at least half-Arab with some Chinese ancestry and is, in fact, brown, just like his mom and his grandpa (those ugly-ass movies that made him painfully white are the Devil's work). Jason at least needs to be ethnically ambiguous enough that he was able to wholeheartedly believe that the top three candidates for his biological mom are a Middle-Eastern woman, an East Asian woman of mixed Chinese and Japanese descent, or a blond haired blue eyed white woman. I tend to go for biracial Hispanic because I myself am the child of one white parent and one Latin parent and I like projecting, but I've seen a lot of good stuff with Jason as East-Asian or Afro-Latino that I really enjoy. And Cass is also biracial, since her mom is, again, of Chinese and Japanese descent and I don't know what the fuck David Cain is, and she should be portrayed as such as well.

And if DC could just remember all of this and stop portraying them as just Bruce clones physically that would be swell.

I cannot stress enough that if you do not make and support the stories and headcanons and fics and interpretations you want to see in the world no amount of complaining that people make things you don't like will help you feel better in the long run

Also consider that just because you don't like more than one interpretation of a thing doesn't mean other people who like a different interpretation don't like others too
