whenever i hear people talking about tian guan ci fu it’s all stuff like “the greatest love story ever told 🥺” “xie lian suffered so much but he’s still so infinitely kind 🥺” which is how my mom talks about the bible. and i’m sure it’s a fine book, but there’s just not enough gravy in the pitch for me to invest in something of that scale. after all, there are so many greatest love stories ever told, but very few stories have, for instance, whatever the hell guan yu and cao cao had going on

just caught up to the last silver and suvi scene... I must admit I sobbed in my car.

silver and suvi are so different!!!! like suvi is in such a different position bc she has something/someone to go home to!! she has rebel parents and true friends and now a strange uncle figure and that's what allowed her to push past the Citadel, and she realizes in that moment that silver probably won't ever understand it!! the narration of suvi's heart closing off to a possibility of a future in real time fucking hurt!!

also, silver can talk a big game about this just being about the citadel but his "why didn't you trust me?" OUCH!! silver will do as much as he can to get back to suvi, but the citadel has to come first!! OUGH!!

To prove that I am trying to write a retelling, here's a failed opening paragraph to a "King Thrushbeard" retelling that I'm never going to write.

Our first year of marriage, my husband and I lived in a hovel. It was a tiny, damp, dim little room, with a dirt floor, a straw roof, and a chimney that always smoked. It sat a mile from the nearest village, abandoned by a farmer who had failed. It sat on the banks of a tiny creek, and at sunrise I would leave the dim confines of the house to wade in the shallows and watch the water ripple over stones, watch the sun flash on the water, watch the birds dive for bugs and sing their praises to the living God who'd given them another day. Sometimes I dream of returning there—the creek would be the same, I think, even so many years later. Of course, at the time, I was miserable.

kinda wild how normalized it is to not talk to a friend for months and that's all fine and dandy, but you cannot do that to your romantic partner like what will the people think if you're not constantly with them 24/7 and if they're not the only relationship you're trying to nurture how dare you treat your romantic partner like you would treat all your platonic relationships

I am once again reminding everyone that

"I think that character will regret that decision; I can see the bad consequences coming, and if they were a real person I would yell at them." (you were engaged enough with the characters that they feel like real people capable of making their own choices)

"I would have liked the story better if the character had made a different decision" (a matter of personal preference with no bearing on the quality of the writing itself, or even whether you agree with the decision that was made in-universe)

and "Given what we've seen from this character previously, the writer having them make that decision broke my immersion" (an actual critique)

are all different statements and do not mean the same thing, even if they can all be phrased as "I don't like that the character made that decision"

I'm not trying to spread false hop or shut down stuff with toxic positivity but something tells me they're damn well aware BH got shafted for the sake of anniversary tours and we probably ARE gonna get more BH related stuff, like how we got an outta nowhere unrelated mn reunited twoshot around the beginning of C3.

I mean I'm sure we'll get oneshots and twoshots! But I don't have any expectations that they'll comparatively more of that kind of thing than VM and the M9 did, even though they receieved less actual focus in their endgame.

but on a more serious note, I do hate when any adaptation--but especially this one!--decides to change the nature of specific uncomfortable or antagonistic character interactions to something softer or sweeter, or even just decided to give two characters that don't get along or interact much at all A Moment™. That really is not always the right call!

not for nothing that roger and jeff are wearing completely identical suits for vicki's wedding down to the same pearl stick pin and it's roger that is distinguished with the accessory and the visual emphasis. that roger wears the pocket square and jeff goes plain without one, without a boutonnière (as feels the most probable and appropriate; they both wear boutonnières in roger's prophetic dream of the wedding). that not only is he wearing the handkerchief, but it's folded in such a way as so take as much space as possible – straying from accepted formality of a neat TV fold, occupying more room on the screen, drawing more attention, pointing among other things to his heart in bright white.
