#and have different priorities in a story

whenever i hear people talking about tian guan ci fu it’s all stuff like “the greatest love story ever told 🥺” “xie lian suffered so much but he’s still so infinitely kind 🥺” which is how my mom talks about the bible. and i’m sure it’s a fine book, but there’s just not enough gravy in the pitch for me to invest in something of that scale. after all, there are so many greatest love stories ever told, but very few stories have, for instance, whatever the hell guan yu and cao cao had going on
#part of it is just optics obviously#everything i heard about erha before i started was like ‘i love a classic tale of love at sixth or seventh car crash. maybe eighth.’#which got my interest AND my attention#but part of it is just that tgcf seems to primarily resonate with people who interact with literature very differently from me#and have different priorities in a story#which suggests that it shall not resonate as much with me#which is a shame because it’s one of very few chinese books at my local library#ryddles

#inspired when i saw an ad on youtube for wizard101#where it said “come play for free and explore 16 different worlds!!!” and i was like okay thats a fucking lie#you cant even get all the way through the FIRST world#personally i think its stupid and inconvenient to have to pay to play the MAIN QUESTLINE#for the people who dont have time to grind the set amount of time you pay for membership or those who dont have money#you either pay for a year and are pressured to do as much as you can before time runs out#or you're stuck doing nothing. there's very little you can do without membership#like the main selling point of the game is so you can finish the story. thats what we download the game for in the first place#it gives you the impression that the priority here is your money and not the consumer's enjoyment and comfort#like there are plenty of games who make the entire game free and still are well off#we pay like 40-50 dollars on bundles and even more than that on crowns. that should be more than enough#there are other games where if you dont have membership it barely affects your gameplay experience overall#or games that have no membership function but still can make decent money#imo having to pay to just actually play the game doesnt make it free. like yeah you can do other stuff like fish and duel each other-#and thats it. you walk around the commons and talk ig#thats like the biggest reason i dropped the game its just wayy too expensive and inconvenient to play it#wizard101#w101#wiz101#polls

I am once again reminding everyone that
"I think that character will regret that decision; I can see the bad consequences coming, and if they were a real person I would yell at them." (you were engaged enough with the characters that they feel like real people capable of making their own choices)
"I would have liked the story better if the character had made a different decision" (a matter of personal preference with no bearing on the quality of the writing itself, or even whether you agree with the decision that was made in-universe)
and "Given what we've seen from this character previously, the writer having them make that decision broke my immersion" (an actual critique)
are all different statements and do not mean the same thing, even if they can all be phrased as "I don't like that the character made that decision"
#scenario: two characters have a misunderstanding and break up#statement 1: 'no you idiot he loves you! go back to him!'#statement 2: 'contrived misunderstandings annoy me. i wish the author hadn't included this subplot.'#statement 3: 'wait why does he even care about that? hes never cared about this kind of thing before why is he mad now?'#heck you can think that a character making the Mature and Logical Choice is out of character#(the 'he would not fucking say that' effect)#'given precedent he wouldn't say 'i understand where youre coming from' he would throw a chair and start screaming'#or that its not out of character but is kind of boring#and you personally would prefer seeing the fallout of the character making the 'wrong' choice and having to fix things after#disagreeing with the characters means the story is engaging#disagreeing with the writing can mean something isnt clicking and couldve been set up better (or that you missed something)#disagreeing with the author means that you and the author are different people with different opinions and priorities#theyre not the same thing

There are many reasons my interests are more geared towards mediaeval Scotland than mediaeval England, but at least one of them has to be the fact that I am completely incapable of Being Normal about the Lion in Winter and Shakespeare's second tetralogy.
#Like I simply could not remain unbiased#Not in a 'taking sides' kind of way but more in a 'the real Henry II did not entirely resemble this fictional adaptation'#I refuse to accept it and I don't really want to#I could try very hard to research and write about Henry II sensibly- and I often do when he (or Hotspur later on) impinge on Scottish histo#But fundamentally my image of Henry II is the image of the character from the Lion in Winter#It's horrible to have to admit I'm like one of those unhinged Braveheart or Philippa Gregory people but for twelfth century England#Although with all due respect the Lion in Winter and Henry IV Part 1 are obviously twenty times better than Braveheart#There are other reasons#I kind of feel England has enough people interested in it already#I like to dip in occasionally and it's interesting to read about (and often necessary from a Scottish perspective)#But yeah for many reasons mediaeval England- though fascinating- is not my number one priority#One of the pretty big reasons is though my unfortunate fan behaviour the minute Richard II sits himself down on the ground#To tell sad stories of the death of kings#And you know what that's valid and probably acts as a useful research tool for many people#Just not for me#It's weird though because other than Shakespeare and the Lion in Winter there aren't many period dramas I particularly care for#Not only am I incredibly picky about my historical media when it comes to the Middle Ages (less so for the 20th century)#But I never really understood why people assume when you say 'I like history' you mean 'I like period dramas'#To me these are two separate unrelated activities/hobbies#Not necessarily better than each other just different

Woe that I had a team of researchers to help me make my period drama fanfiction as accurate as possible, but alas all I have is duck duck go, some old photos claiming to be from the right time period, and Wikipedia
#fanfic#look#if you’re an expert on 1800’s Colombia call me#I’m not saying I would sell out to ask some experts some super specific questions but!#if I had been Stephanie Meyer and somebody came to me offering to turn my Buffy fanfiction into a best selling novel…#that whole werewolf story line would have been super different#I would have been asking so many questions I would have had to list whoever answered them as a co-author#I know that seems way out of the left field to say but#but I’m just thinking about how the American writers of Encanto spent time in Colombia asking questions and experiencing the culture#and leaned heavily on the experiences of their Latin American team members#in order to write a story that garnered a lot of praise for its respectful representation#vs the stories we get when researching the cultures the story is supposed to be about is not a priority#and like sometimes it’s because the writer is one person with limited time and resources who is doing their best#but sometimes it’s just cause the people writing the story don’t actually care that much#I’m sorta just sitting here stewing over the fact that I can’t find the specific information I want and I know it must be out there#and I can’t imagine being handed the resources I would need to go find that info and being like Nah

but on a more serious note, I do hate when any adaptation--but especially this one!--decides to change the nature of specific uncomfortable or antagonistic character interactions to something softer or sweeter, or even just decided to give two characters that don't get along or interact much at all A Moment™. That really is not always the right call!
#this is about charlotte and lizzy#and to a lesser extent lizzy and mrs. bennet#i was talking to @ihaveonlymydreams the other day about Lizzy and Charlotte! and the thing is:#they were never truly friends#not on the deepest level. it's a friendship of convenience and a friendship built around judgy gossip#for the most part#charlotte marrying collins doesn't suddenly change their dynamic so Lizzy can never see her the same way again.#it reveals the truth that was there all along: that she and Charlotte do have wildly different priorities and values#and those differing values make them pretty incompatible#as anything more than acquaintances#and it's so uncomfortable for lizzy to face that#and there's no fixing it because das just who Charlotte IS#but now she can see it. and so she comes to visit and she writes letters for the sake of what was as Austen tells us#and because lizzy iS loyal#but that is truly not a moment where it's about lizzy being too harsh on charlotte and then having to be like 'we still love each other'#and i do kind of hate when stories do that in general. just flatten everything into something feel-good#sometimes things are bad and disappointing and flat and that's just the truth#I feel this with Mrs Bennet a little bit less because it's smaller but again. it's like. how much pathos do we need to feel for her#also she just doesn't like lizzy! never has. least favorite daughter#anyway a million more thoughts but yeah. one of the things about P&P is that Lizzy doesn't actually learn what friendship is#until after Darcy.#it's such a true growing up story. in the sense of: she thinks she's done and she's not#anyway anyway many more thoughts on how charlotte's decision to marry collins is framed too#too sympathetically tbh#it's not just fear. charlotte just also doesn't give a damn about romance asdlfas;fasfsafsaflkasl;fsjafsafsafsf#she said i want a home and i want a parlor and if i have a fool of a husband that's okay with ME#and it's not even about (for the moment) judging the choice. it's just seeing it clearly for what it actually is#2005 liveblog

not for nothing that roger and jeff are wearing completely identical suits for vicki's wedding down to the same pearl stick pin and it's roger that is distinguished with the accessory and the visual emphasis. that roger wears the pocket square and jeff goes plain without one, without a boutonnière (as feels the most probable and appropriate; they both wear boutonnières in roger's prophetic dream of the wedding). that not only is he wearing the handkerchief, but it's folded in such a way as so take as much space as possible – straying from accepted formality of a neat TV fold, occupying more room on the screen, drawing more attention, pointing among other things to his heart in bright white.
#i wrote about this in the tags of that gifset but i thought i should accompany commentary with images.#i've... for sure mentioned this scene before but i've read enough tonight that i feel more confident speaking on it more#than only – omg roger is wearing the same clothes. they could switch places. i wish they would switch places.#625.#it's a category of ds analysis where i do hesitate before ascribing importance but it's not going to stop me entirely.#a) davis could have just not put on the pin he was supposed to and that's the end of that story. not unlikely. but b)#the details *matter* in menswear – dark shadows costumes (in the present day) rely heavily on contemporary codes of fashion‚ class‚ leisure#many Many of the male characters mostly or only wear suits – the subtle differences in those suits (between characters; between days#and arcs) are responsible for communicating a great deal to us about who these people are – their place in the structure of things#and what they want right now.#and in costume design – when two characters are wearing an identical costume (a uniform; a wedding suit) the distinguishing features#take on the role of communicating details of character.#in american weddings the groom is dressed much more like his groomsmen than the bride and the bridal party – this is something#the costume team is going to be aware of and be purposeful about. even if they weren't purposeful: assume a 60's viewer who knows the rules#of suits‚ of weddings‚ of pocket squares (who knows much more than i do)#roger and jeff are dressed so much alike for vicki's wedding as to be nigh indistinguishable – it could have‚#had things played out differently‚ been roger in jeff's place.#both the script and the players elide the two in vicki's perspective (''why hasn't roger come back?'' ''you mean jeff don't you?'')#this being a wedding that he tried to stop – one in which he sensed disaster – one in which you already have the notion that maybe he does#wish it was *him* instead‚ though he won't say that. but his first and foremost priority in 625 and 626 is her happiness.#he takes the responsibility (and the shame) from vicki's shoulders of telling the guests that jeff left and there's no wedding.#he chases jeff down to the cemetary‚ to try to stop him from digging up a grave‚ and *implores* him to focus on offering vicki a life.#he has a large role in these eps perhaps especially because he's the one that had the premonition against the wedding; but also because#vicki is one of the few people he cares about – and he says as much. all this to say. roger is grabbing attention with his extravagant#pocket square – he's pulling focus visually; narratively; from the groom (in terms of vicki/the wedding – jeff has more to do with eve/#the graveyard/peter) vicki is spending as much time thinking about roger as she does jeff. and the moment where roger comes up to her room#to see her is .... well. there's more shared in the way they look at each other than all v/j's professions of love between them.#(and it's a distant echo of her first night in the house: roger at her bedroom door)#in the ds in my head (my beloved ds in my head) this is where the paths ought to have diverged. that vicki – no matter how much she loves#the past‚ how dearly she remembers the 18th century and peter and their ill-fated jail cell‚ has to choose now. not the grave‚ life.

I don't remember why but I dreamed about looking up the common religions in different regions of Thailand last night
#in addition to like. more regular dreams where someone kidnapped part of our camping/hiking group and I needed to use my knowledge of#dog/wolf behavior to appease a wolf that we needed to pass by to get between two forest clearings and also since my character was a#clean-freak / germaphobe he had the power to have bugs not bother him in the woods and then that all happened twice because ofc we needed to#keep to the story script when it restarted and I had to keep everything on the rails but this time two other wolves also came up and they#all decided I was chill and we left each other alone even while I was de-escalating the kidnapping situation but then the kidnappers started#running away and I was like 'you know what would make them think again? three wolves chasing them' so I got the wolves' attention and#started running and they thought it was some kind of chase game and eventually after a couple times of them catching up with me and thinking#that was it they realized someone ahead of us was also running so THEY were the target and we finally started chasing down the kidnappers#and by this point I was considered part of the pack and also we were in a school gymnasium but right after some sort of fair or assembly so#we had to dodge chairs and tables and stacks of equipment and occasionally children but they mostly kept out of the way#oh and I think after the reset but before the kidnapping there was also a part where one of the other characters (I feel like one of my#siblings was playing this one) insisted that our top priority should be finding clothes and I was like 'wait are you NAKED?' and they were#like 'yeah we all are???' and I was like 'WHAT no I'm fully dressed. my character is wearing a suit and tie! and a hat even!' yeah yeah and#then the kidnappers/bullies came up and one of them was a blond lady with a bolo tie.#btw the reason I'm saying stuff like 'my character'/'was playing a character' is because in this dream it was explicitly characters we were#playing in some sort of game where the focus wasn't roleplay but it had a roleplay-y aspect where the different characters had different#strengths and abilities; such as Betrayal at House on the Hill or Western Legends or Dead of Winter#anyway. IDK why dream-me thought thailand was one of the most religiously diverse places on earth. in real life it's over 90% buddhist.#ThornShadow.said

my humanity in a book series now that I actually think about the premise is so weird.
the original concept is just to prove that all of humanity's pain and suffering and joys and gifts can be shown in just a few books, that a lot of our struggles are shared and a lot are unique but that they're all inherently human.
no matter what experience you go through it's going to be a human experience because you are a human, and no matter how isolated and alone or exiled you feel the rest of humanity you are still infact human and take that part of you everywhere
you will always be a step in some direction of humanity no matter what that deed is
it's not meant to be read as comforting, in all honesty most of the characters find the idea of never not being human to be sort of disturbing. But that's a part of the human experience too. To look at humanity and say "man we suck"
But now I'm looking at it and it's more then that
the book is set in the 32nd century
although because of my lack of imagination I can't think of what the language would be like I did haphazardly put together a culture that I personally felt like matched the common trend of development in humanity
everyone is given a livable space, concept of currency really isn't a thing (but that's less on humanity and just because the space colony is made up of roughly 10,000 people and trade is impossible, there's more reasons too but I won't get into them at this moment) and in all honesty the society is fundamentally different then most societies on earth.
It's what you would call a utopia but it's such an obvious system that no body even considers it good. They talk only about the unfairness of the council members and the inhuman layout the colony is built on to make it relatively fair between all people. (I say fair not equal because they do take children, occupation and just size of person into account, which yes is a nightmare for everyone invloved)
but I dont know if you see it but there's a disconnect
they don't value the things we value, they don't have the same desires the same ambitions the same secret indulges, many conflicts are the same as they are now but they have a completely different context, different reactions from people, different tones and no real recognizable side we usually see in modern debates.
it's worse then if it were completely different conflicts, then you could just do some narrative translation and make it based off of the modern lense but you can't do that because it's the same conflict. ofcourse it's not to a point where your brain thinks "I can't compherehend this at all" but actually that makes it worse, because it is compherehensible it just isn't common
it's a story trying to tell you that all human experiences are inherently human but it's showing you a humanity that you can't really quite connect with
things you think are basic desires exist but they're not considered the core things that makes someone human, there's something alien about these people that you can't really agree with the actions they take and can't make sense of the movements and words they make.
800 years is a long time and I wanted to show it but I made a story that's inherently ironic
it still fits the original theme, it might fit it even better since it's telling you no matter how much humanity changes its still going to be humanity
but I left my audience behind, I alienated them to show them that they are human, that despite the alienation they're still apart of this society that they're reading about that dosent feel quite right
it's a weird thing to do
I really thought this book was going to be simple to write but I'm already adding layers and I don't think I'm going to stop
and also the science aspect behind this story excites me so much
I'm no biology major so half the stuff I come up with for the alien planet's are probably going to be impossible but it's fun to write about
espicially the plants, I found the heat regulated Lilly pads to be really fun to think up of
also fox like creatures that glow under uv light, gosh that took so much research
they're adorable by human standards but they are deathly venomous so please don't pet them
this series isn't even the only one in this universe
there's a second story that I suddenly forgot the name of but it's something like 'Colony 1, Brother Lutangalo' or something similar.
oh and if you haven't noticed yes these books are heavily inspired by the enderverse and I just wanted to go more indepth into the parts of the books that was largely left unexplored. So this series is also inspired by the shadow series, so the humanity in a book is more morality, conceptual and personal in nature the col1 brother lutangalo books are more political and more grounded in the main society (the 2 main characters are sent to set up a colony on a different planet so they aren't really on the main colony themselves) the main narrator being lutangalo which is the son of the 108 year old colony leader Lau. (this society also has a euthanization law that all people over the age of 100 by law must die to prevent over population, but religious leaders are protected so they can live pass 100 indefinitely) and is currently 8 when you first meet him. Actually his books don't start until he's 12, we meet him when he's 8 because that's the year the 2 main characters comes back
his books, and I'm calling them his books because this series is heavily centered on the one character rather then the humanity series which is forced to jump between people in different time and space to get the message across because the 2 main characters litterally don't react to anyone else but eachother for the majority of book one, all of book 2 and half of book 3 (at least that's what my planning says but it may change when I get to writing the drafts)
anyways his books are very focused on the family that he's apart of and how they affect the colony, it also focuses on the personal perspective of this one kid which is honestly the closet thing the readers get to a instinctually relatable character, he has all the impulses and needs a person of the current age would have, because he basically lived in the 21st century because of his obsessive need to research about Mr ari who is notoriously a history nerd.
so you're finally getting a person that lives and breathes in the same patterns as you do.
and he's so miserable
he is one of the most troubled, impulsive people you have ever met
but also the calmest and kindest and gentlest person at the same time
he's a horrible liar until he isn't, he's intelligent and self aware until he's shockingly oblivious
just a ball of horrible contradictions that feels way too unstable and flipfloppy to be consistently relatable
yes of course in several moments you will exclaim "ha, he's just like me!" but it's going to be rather hard to admit that all of his experiences and actions are relatable or even compherehensible
unlike the first series it's not justifiable in any rational way
it's messy, it's complicated, it's convoluted and he's honestly awful in some scenes
but thats human too
#i have this weird thing of trying to write a simple story then making it wayyyyyyy too complicated#THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT A DRUNKARD WHO LEARNS TO GET OVER HIS ADDICTION BY GOING ON A SPACE TRIP WHERE HE CANT DRINK ALCOHOL#AND WHEN HE COMES BACK THE PERSON HE WAS ON THE SPACE TRIP IS LIKE “NO SIR YOU ARE NOT DRINKING MORE”#THEN IT BECAME SO COMPLICATED#also fun thing (?) is that you never get to meet lutangalos mother in his books but she gets an entire chapter to herself in the humanity#series#her name is caroline and yes she was the lady i was gushing about#i often fall in love with the characters i write#fall in love from an aro ace perspective is weird but it basically means im devoted to them?#for me it was less platonic and more spiritual#but then again internally my love for my friends do appear more worshippy then friends but alas thats a different issue#i really love this story and how indepth it is but also hate it because it takes up so much brain storage and im afriad ill forget stuff#its not even very high on my priorities#its below fixem which isnt even a story i really enjoy#dnd is my priority honestly#endersgame#inspired books are really cool but i never saw one that focused on the thousands of years in the future bit#i want to die#but i must write#i swear if i die before i finish my dnd campaign im going to kill everyone

definition : a character who has an obsessive and possessive side in regards to their crush, ready to use violent and murderous means to maintain an exclusive bond.
this came up in a conversation with my friend and it’s stupid but im curious what other people think
#as much as I want to say yes becuase specifically goromi would be such an appealing yandere type like… aesthetically.#and in terms of Vibes#I don’t think he is#it’s more like he’s just… well he’s obsessive and hardcore dedicated to kiryu but. he’s not really that possessive if you think about it#I mean he never interferes with other love interests/others kiryu cares about let alone going out of his way to eliminate them#and when kiryu goes places majima doesn’t follow him unless he has a reason- he’s generally got his own shit going on and kiryu- though#massively important to him- isn’t like. his only priority or focus in life#but yeah so like. he’d gladly fight off an army. get maimed mutilated killed etc for kiryu. etc. but he genuinely loves him in#such a way where he doesn’t want to take away from his happiness generally- if that means leaving him be and casting himself to the side#considering himself not as important to kiryu as kiryu is to him and so on– then so be it. he won’t bother those who make kiryu happy#unless he has a strong– usually unrelated reason#I mean I’d kinda LIKE to see him a little more unhinged on this front but#yeah#his ‘only I can have him’ behavior seems pretty much assigned to just like. fighting/killing him and whatnot#not so much romantically. I think if kiryu was ever really genuinely invested in someone else long term majima wouldnt lash out about it hed#probably just get really depressed#NOW MINE ON THE OTHER HAND. DIFFERENT STORY#I think HE is a prime candidate for Male Yandere Representation#majima#kazumaji#goro majima#yakuza#rgg#polls#rambling

#High key reminder to please not allude to asking for more on particular stories if they’re marked as completed#I have at least three or four WIPs and I would like to finish one of them#Even if it wasn’t intended that way sometimes it comes off as bait-y#And it makes authors not want to interact because it feels like all the reader is looking for is more content#Like I’m flattered but also sometimes I have to read something four different ways to also read how it could be intended because#what is enjoyable is buried in stuff that like…I cannot determine the intent on#TLDR: be mindful that questions or topics mentioned in comments don’t always come off as intended; if you’re reading this thank you#I will be replying when I have the time#but also: please be aware of my priorities and that every author is different and not all of us come back to every idea#Tbd later because I’m just tired and I’m glad older fics are still read
