please don't mistake silence for hatred. please don't mistake unanswered plotting messages as indifference, or a lack of enthusiasm towards you. considering the ages of most roleplayers, many of us have bills to pay, families to take care of, medical conditions to treat, appointments to make, classes to take, homes to clean, and lives to live away from the computer that are far, far more important than writing on tumblr — life has a tendency to get in the way of hobbies and fun things like this. be patient with your fellow writers. if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. of course you can set your boundaries, keep your space comfortable, and softblock whoever you wish, but do so while recognizing it's probably not hatred or apathy that keeps them from leaping into your dms with message after message. they probably love this hobby just as much as you... but sometimes life gets in the way.

Something I think about constantly is whether or not hogwarts had fagging* before dumbledore took over (and we know there was a history of corporal punishment so, like, doesn’t seem unlikely). And then I wonder about little first year Tom Riddle, with no money and no social support (and being a pretty child) and how badly that situation could have gone for him until he got strong enough to get his own back. Like, irl, that behaviour was not cracked down on in any way until the 1970s and there’s no telling how many young boys suffered terribly from the brutality of public school life. Like, no wonder Tom Riddle grew up to be Voldemort: if anything im surprised more people didn’t. It fucks me up. I don’t think I’ve ever read a fic where the subject is even touched on, and I think that’s because it’s just not talked about, but holy shit, British public schools were awful.

Damn, I never even knew that was a thing. I think you completely nailed it on the head on why it’s not seen in fanfics, it’s because people simply don’t typically even know about it.

Honestly, it makes sense for British schools considering how much the caste system is/was regarded. I can see it happening in Hogwarts because of this, there are those on top (rich purebloods) and those on the bottom (poor muggleborns/muggle raised kids). Because there’s such a gap and the purebloods are kinda treated like royalty I can see it as a very plausible scenario.

Physical punishments were also highly likely considering it was just a typical thing for the time.

Anyways, this is extremely sad, but I’m glad you sent me an ask about it because I enjoy learning new things, no matter how brutal (especially when it comes to history). It would be extremely interesting to see it written into a fanfic one day and brought up more in media.

It also could explain why Tom becomes so closed off in time to come and refutes all possible positive environments. He’s used to being treated horribly and is used to not trusting anyone, so surrounding himself by shitty people would likely make him more comfortable because he knows how to deal with them. Would also explain why he enjoys using the purebloods as little puppets for his entertainment as Voldemort.

You also already said everything that would make him a target for that type of stuff, so he was likely a victim.

okay in the last ask you mentioned how tetchou stabs jouno for fun and sillies and stuff which happened to make me think a lot about how tetchou acts decently different around jouno than others.

tetchou is typically rather formal in the way he acts in a way? as in he's very straightforward, generally composed and calm in his words, and polite to anyone he's dealing with.

an example of this is when he still treated the cafe owner kindly despite him being an "accessory to terrorism" in jouno's words.

basically, in most situations, he remains very composed. even when he's up to his sillier antics (like when he was watching ants or doing pushups during a meeting). he's direct and straight-faced almost always around most people. he doesn't act that way to be seen as silly, it's just who he is (and i love it).

i would imagine he could act this way for many reasons. it is most likely him being professional, likely as a reference to the irl tetchou who had samurai lineage; making him act with the tone and professionalism of samurai.

despite his professionalism, maybe he has difficulty being expressive around most people, or maybe he doesn't want to be expressive around people by choice.

but this is where he's different around jouno.

firstly, i'll talk about the times he's stabbed jouno. this has happened twice, and both were to de-escalate jouno from his tendancy to mentally torment people.

the wording in these panels implies this is a regular occurrence. which is a little funny to me hehe.

anyway, we see by the way that he acts around others that usually he de-escalates situations by talking first instead of acting. he will turn to violence if he believes it's needed, but typically he talks first. we see this when he confronts kenji verbally before attacking.

yet with jouno he doesn't bother to tell him to stop first, instead opting to jab him. remembering that the hunting dogs have enhanced physical strength, a small stab wound probably isn't a huge deal for them.

because of this i think the stabbings are tetchou partially teasing jouno. him messing around like that isn't something he does with anybody else but he seems to enjoy pissing off his partner.

also. stabbing him directly in the ass? gay as hell. jouno following up by saying "don't poke my ass every single time" implies that his ass specially gets jabbed a lot. hmmmm

anyways

another example of this is when tetchou smirks/chuckles at jouno insisting that he's the greatest hunting dog. the small laugh was most definitely to bother jouno.

mmmm theyre both so pretty.

once again, tetchou pushes aside his composed self and being intentionally silly only really happens towards jouno.

arguably, this can be shown again in the pushups scene.

tetchou acting unbothered and then calling jouno's weight "just right" while he continues to exercise seems like a combination of him trying to (jokingly) annoy jouno as well as his tendency to not acknowledge his own actions as bothersome or odd to others.

anyway to sum up this segment: tetchou is only seen intentionally bothering and teasing jouno and nobody else. he acts much differently towards others but seems to let his professional guard down around only his partner. this shows a great layer of trust and comfort between the two!

oh. but im not done talking about this. not at all.

the other huge display of emotions for tetchou was everything that went down with kenji.

as displayed throughout most of tetchou's appearances, he's incredibly justice-orientated. he has a tendancy to put justice above everything. here's a couple panels showing this:

using his own logic here, he should have went after bram after having found him. tetchou even admitted that, but there was one other thing more important to him than that. jouno.

starting here, this panel takes place after bram and aya escape. at this point, tetchou had assumed the agency was using bram to control people; meaning it wasn't just kenji he technically had business with at that time.

i will also preface this by saying the book's influence likely had an impact on tetchou attacking kenji before they could finish talking.

however, the book's writing didn't stop tetchou from insisting on finding jouno before taking down the agency. his worry towards jouno's whereabouts made him change his stance on justice as well as deterred him from prioritizing taking down the agency.

now that he's talking to kenji, i'd like to start it by showing that he seemed genuinely grateful and happy when kenji initially offered to help him find jouno.

as well in the anime, his eyes soften when kenji offers to help.

after talking to kenji for a brief moment, he opts to attack instead of continuing. this seems out of character for tetchou; he even apologized to kenji before saying he needs to find jouno as quickly as possible.

the fact that he apologized, combined with how we've seen him treat people in the past shows that this isn't typically what he resorts to.

also, in the anime we can see the gloss his eyes slightly shaking as he says this line, which could display worry, sadness, or anger towards whatever could be happening to his partner.

he seems almost distraught, which is a huge contrast to his typically-composed self.

and, of course; there's the fact that mid-fight tetchou had to tell kenji that jouno is a good person despite what people think.

he looks genuinely sad here, as if he's speaking from his heart. jouno has very-clearly put up a tough exterior that he uses around everyone, but tetchou goes out of his way to defend him even when he absolutely doesn't need to.

he could have stayed silent or just said he wants his coworker back, but he insisted on stating that jouno is a good person.

it's also important to note that nobody else tends to speak kindly of jouno, which puts a lot more depth on their closeness to each other. tetchou sees through jouno's words and actions and knows that he is heavily misunderstood.

and of course, we have tetchou directly saying that he will place jouno above justice despite knowing what the right course of action should have been.

he is putting jouno above the very thing he basis his career as well as his morality on. that's how worried he is. that's how much he cares.

and in this panel, we see he's extremely angry towards kenji's lack of response.

lets compare this to the first time tetchou fought the agency.

in chapter 61, when he was fighting the agency alongside jouno; he kept a more menacing/intimidating look as he attacked. when he was not attacking, he kept calm-looking despite being pissed off. compared to when he was fighting kenji in chapter 100 and looked infuriated. even the different fonts used for the dialogue puts further emphasis on this.

now, i'm going to jump ahead to the end of tetchou and kenji's fight. tetchou recognizes his mistake and asks kenji to kill him.

it's important to note that his reasoning as to why he should have chased justice was because he doesn't think jouno would have condoned his choice.

he specified it again, even opting to call jouno his friend. also note how white his eyes are here, meaning his intent was pure and he genuinely felt awful for misjudging what jouno would have wanted. he cares so much that he was asking to be killed for misunderstanding what was the correct course of action.

and then after kenji insists on helping him find jouno instead, he smiles in relief before the two pass out.

one last small note is that we've only ever seen tetchou smile three times throughout the manga so far, and all of them were mentioned here and involved jouno.

to sum it all up: tetchou, who is typically very composed and justice-orientated, is willing to throw aside his entire stance on justice for jouno. he lets his professional guard down around his friend, allowing them to tease each other and be silly as well, which he doesn't appear to do around others often. this shows that the two have a close bond and genuinely care so much about each other.

as for jouno, i don't have as much to say however there definitely is a few things i'd like to touch on.

firstly, despite claiming to hate tetchou a lot, jouno still uses a respectful honourific (-san) whenever he refers to him. i'm not a japanese speaker so please feel free to correct me if i'm wrong but there's a good chance jouno would opt to not use an honorific at all if he genuinely detested tetchou as much as he claims.

and when it comes to teasing, jouno does it much more often than tetchou does (however he also messes with more people, it's just a personality difference between the two).

clearly with the way they act around each other, jouno does not actually hate tetchou. i think they like to bother each other by play-bullying.

also, noting on jouno's criminal past, he was given an easy oppurtunity to be thrown into the DoA where he could be incredibly powerful and would likely not face any consequences for his actions had he joined.

we know he declined fukuchi's offer because he found joy in saving innocent people. but i would the influence of the other hunting dogs helped set him into that place of mind. tetchou seems to be the one he works with most, so there's a good chance he takes a lot of inspiration from how tetchou handles justice.

another thing i noticed with jouno is that his displaying of emotions is almost an inverse of how tetchou acts. jouno keeps smiling a lot despite who he's speaking to. in contrast, he can keep a straight face when interacting with tetchou a lot.

of course, that could make it seem as if jouno is unhappy around tetchou, but i would argue it's the opposite.

some people will force a happy expression to appear unassuming or kind (or in a lot of jouno's cases, intimidating). so him allowing himself to maintain a straight face around tetchou could mean that he is comfortable enough around him to not feel the need to express everything. he doesn't need to keep his guard up around tetchou.

jouno almost always keeps a very happy or calm composure around enemies, likely as an intimidation factor. yet he allows himself to express frustration and annoyance around the hunting dogs in general, and most often with tetchou. i'd like to imagine this just shows his security in his partner.

the last thing i'll mention here is a lot of speculation on my behalf. however i think that jouno seems like the type to push away those close to him. i kind of perceived his supposed hatred towards tetchou to be a combination of joking around as well as possibly a defense mechanism to try and avoid keeping people close?

my main reason in stating that is that he's claimed to not like any of his coworkers yet still opts to not betray them and still works well with them. if he truly hated tetchou, he probably wouldn't allow them to work together. he likely says such things to avoid being liked too much, and these actions proved to work since tetchou acknowledged that everyone sees jouno as cold.

yet through all that tetchou still knew he was good despite the exterior, which makes them well-suited for each other.

anyways: i feel like these two really do treat each other much differently than they treat the other people around them. that puts a lot of emphasis on their bond and closeness in general. they can be silly around each other, they can get through arguments no problem, they make a great team, and clearly care about each other a ton! they mean so much to me <3

I don’t care about how old you are; if you’re going through this kind of stuff, it doesn’t matter. You need help. I am a Christian, so in a way, religion does matter to me, but it won’t stop me from trying to show you the love of Christ through our screens. I don’t know what to say to the rest of the post, except that stress and anxiety can definitely mess with your memory (personal experience, not trying to gaslight/anything), and you’ve been dealing with a lot. I don't know the entire situation, but if you think you've been abused, that's probably what's happened. I know depression is a hard thing. My mom has it and still struggles with it daily. But that doesn't mean you should give up. Every day there's a chance of something amazing that you might miss. Look for the silver lining. It's hard, and even harder with depression, and I don't have it (I don't think), so I don't know entirely what to say. (And I have to go now, so... Rest of response a little later) You're not dumb and blind. You've been hurt, and a blindfold forced upon your lids. When you're used to something, it's hard to get rid of. It takes a while to adjust. Being honest to oneself is a very good step. It's hard. I, myself, still many times lie to myself. It's part of human nature. And trying to be open to oneself is a hard, but fruitful, journey. Idk for sure what the voice is, but it could be (forgive me real quick because I'm religious) the devil, Satan, trying to win you over and drag you down. He does that when he knows that you're a grand spirit who has a grand purpose. Don't let him win. Happily punch that guy in the face! (It'll be hard, but I believe in you, and have your back at best I can! You've got this!) It sucks that you have no backup in your family. Age is a number, and religion is a view point of the world. You can be any age or any religion, and I wouldn't give two shakes. You can talk about either, you can keep it secret, I don't mind. I'll support you and be with you either way, no matter what. And crying is good and important. It's a release mechanism our body has for stress and such. It's part of the healing process. It's not weak. It's strength.

I don't think ill share it with my family, and idk if I should. Ill probably just go to the psychologist during school hours so that no one figures it out (and even if they do, my mom knows that im not alright, she just doesn't know that this is the matter)

I literally feel like what Nevermatch said, kinda like i was putting Mentos in a bottle of Coke and keeping it closed and then just snapped. I never usually rant like this but recently I just felt like letting it out anyhow cuz it started to physically hurt.

Until I figure out with the psychologist, i decided that I should probably do my part, which would be more self care. I think I neglected myself with everything that was happening and I think that i should do my part and take care of myself before seeking deeper help. I definitely did abandon my needs and both physical and mental health just bcuz of others, so I should, at least for this upcoming spring break, cheer up myself and take care. I mean like, if im not kind to myself, then I don't think that anyone can help me.

Now when I think about it, i was being a hypocrite recently. Always telling everyone else to be kind to themselves and rant whenever needed and seek out help while I was here bottling up everything and keeping it to myself and neglecting my wishes and health. I was literally doing the opposite of what i was telling to everyone else.

Also, Lily, for those antidepressants. I actually didn't know what that was until I googled it, and i don't think I am. The thing is that im not professionally diagnosed with any mental illness for now so that's why I wasn't even taking those. If now being nice to myself and some self care counts as an antidepressant, then I am planning to and definitely should.

Im glad that none of y'all care how old i am or whats my religion, bcuz here's the thing. If I was in LU, i would fall in the same category as Four and Wind. We don't know how old Four is but he's the second youngest (according to that one post imma try to find) and Wind is nearly 14. So yeah actually if imma rank myself like that, i would fall in the same age group with them i think. Yeah, im that young 😶 (Four can't be older than 16 now can he???)

EDIT: I advise reading THIS post for a more updated take on this concept. While this post was written more as a nutty conspiracy theory, the more time has gone by, the more blatant links between anti-urban/Black/liberal/train messaging has become in the US. When you actually Americanize Starlight Express, Electra suddenly becomes a Reaganite boogeyman of Amtrak as a “welfare queen”- A “Dark Side of the (T)Rainbow” esque fascinating synchronicity

(Yes, that term is racially loaded and I am using it very deliberately for reasons to be explained later.)

MASSIVE DISCLAIMER: I was way too wishy washy on this in the original version of the post (which got picked up by some bigger names and spread around) so I want to make this very clear. This is all a giant “Immer Pünktlich!” situation where the original creators could have never foreseen how it comes off wildly different in another country. Most of the traits discussed here were not present in the workshop version of the character. They just arose later on mainly through pure coincidence. I am VERY aware of Electra’s original intent and origins. I would be astounded if Brits in the 80s knew this much about the long-suffering US passenger rail network, even most Americans today don’t know if they don’t actually ride these trains or live in the northeast.  Starlight’s central themes of bootstrapping and “being under your own control” are associated with conservatives like Thatcher and Reagan, but that’s basically it in terms of actually intended elements. This is a wild reinterpretation of things by someone with a wildly different viewpoint than the original creatives.

People often make fun of how Electra makes such a big deal of being electric and futuristic when electric trains are just kind of the norm in most countries with substantial rail networks.  But when you take into account that toothpaste-era Electra is considerably Amtrak-coded and look into the politics and railroad history of what they’d be like irl…. Their framing goes from kind of stupid to pointedly malicious in oddly specific ways.

You know what else WAS the norm in the US (and still is in much of Europe) until Reagan started treating it as a radical freak? The big bad “liberal agenda” of the government actually funding things like social programs and infrastructure, including railroads.  And you know what kind of trains are almost completely dependent on that kind of government support?  Electric ones.  EVERY SINGLE REPLICA NATIONAL represents a country that (at least circa the 80s) had a nationalized rail network that actually invested in electrification. It’s not impossible for private companies to fully fund themselves but very hard, especially now.  

Who are “electric train politics” heavily associated with in the US?  Black people, LGBT people, damn near every minority, which coincidentally, Electra regularly was early on.

You may not realize this if you’re from elsewhere, but the US has very, very little rail electrification vs other rich countries.  You have some commuter rail and local transit systems in a number of cities, the Northeast Corridor and Keystone Corridor, and that’s…. about it.  Intercity service between a line of the big northeastern cities and that’s it.  The rest is all diesel domain irl.  Behold the wikipedia page for electrified lines in the US and see just how many are GONE. (Passenger service is also absolutely threadbare if not nonexistant in most of the non-electric network and often offensively slow, not even local road speed.  But that’s a whole separate can of worms) 

Why is this?  Heavy simplification, but the government subsidized highways and airports instead after WWII and that along with antiquated laws and losing mail service made passenger rail a massive money pit for most the railroads forced to continue it.  Instead of passenger rail service and infrastructure improving like basically all the other Nationals’ countries,  routes dropped like flies and many railroads sank into financial ruin until Penn Central’s collapse in the late 60s.  That’s when the government finally stepped in and took over passenger services as Amtrak.  Electrification infrastructure and equipment was dated then due to years of desperate finances, and while there was active rail investment in the 70s to improve, Reagan’s administration was hostile to it and it’s been an on and off uphill battle since to get enough funding to keep things going, let alone improve or expand.  Literally left decades behind by the system.  The 2013 tour is the most accurate version of Electra as a realistic reflection of electric passenger rail in the US- a guy who’s been at it since the 80s that still looks like a decades-old vision of the future in a notably cheap, torn up, worn out costume.  Actually the AEM-7 locomotives used then date to 1978, even older than that.

“Electra must be rich” sounds like something a stingy conservative politician would say about Amtrak needing billions of dollars (to just be barely functional due to years of neglect).  Yes, they were intended to be a celebrity for separate reasons early on, but the massive contrast between being shown as “rich” but representing an infamously NOT rich rail system really feels like something a nasty conservative politician would try as a smear campaign in another timeline. Oooo handouts bad.  Oooo you must be so extravagant if you need that much.  You “welfare queen” sucking government funds to blow on exotic pets and glitter and other frivolities. You “strapping young buck buying T-bone steaks with food stamps”. Those are Reagan’s quotes, not mine, I hate even typing them out but god, can it be more obvious?  Painting those who need government assistance (usually coded as black) as extravagant has been weaponized to destroy social programs and further inequality.  The gap between Electra and reality always felt kind of jarring for me, but the longer I thought about it, the more I realized how much uglier the implications were.

“Or unreliable”- electric trains have so few moving parts they tend to be notably reliable in terms of the physical locomotive/multi unit*.  A lot of their issues are actually due to structural failures with powerlines, and this is ESPECIALLY true with the NEC and other ooold electric commuter lines in the US.  This has also limited the maximum speed of trains at times.  See video below for more on this, also explains a lot of the stuff I’ve mentioned earlier.  Huh.  Gee whiz.  Someone held back and suffering due to structural problems being blamed as personal failing.  What DOES that sound like? 

*technically CC 40104 used as Electra’s helmet actually was an unreliable model because it was a weird complicated niche thing with four voltages for a uniquely European situation but that’s downright cherry picking.  The other Nez Casse engines with that styling actually were reasonably reliable and realistic Amtrak Electra from the 80s to 2018 would be an AEM-7 (common fanon choice too) that was also fine.

Anyways, isn’t it funny how people conveniently ignore how steam preservation was actually very popular (compared to almost any other obsolete tech) in the 80s and had been since at least the 60s?  You had steam engines pulling the 1976 Freedom Train.  A small, relatively “young”, mechanically functional steam engine would have tourist railroads FIGHTING over them back then.  That was the era when the majority of the steam engines left in Barry Scrapyard were scooped up and preserved, Crown Metal Company was making new build ones for amusement parks, and some tourist railroads even bought new builds from the last company in China building steam engines for regular service.

But you know what did go out of favor in the late 30s and was treated as downright laughable to go back to after the 50s, just like the regular revenue use of steam locos in the US?  

The kind of small-government conservatism Reagan preached.  And the steam engines in the show promote.  Barry Goldwater was openly mocked for it in the mid-60s.  It was thought genuinely unthinkable to go back to.  

So, those laughably historically inaccurate depictions of electric and steam engines.  Isn’t it uncanny how near-perfectly those unrealistic traits of them align with other things?  

Also a funny aside: probably 90% of those new build Crown Metal steam engines were dressed up in western themes.  Literally cowboy actors, just like Reagan was.

So I finally caught up on My Stand In after being 3 episodes behind due to irl reasons.

The last three episodes have been a lot and while I’m sad to have missed the weekly discussions, I’m also kind of glad I watched all three at once because it gave me the opportunity to get to watch Ming’s progress rapidly rather than waiting (which my ADHD brain is very happy about) and the one thing really stuck with me through all three episodes.

Of the three who knows Joe is Joe, Ming is the only one to figure it out completely on his own. He doesn’t overhear anything, he isn’t told by anyone. Even the priest (is that what he is? Citation needed) won’t give Ming the straight answer he seeks. Joe is neither dead nor alive but a secret third thing, his soul has transmigrated to another body entirely.

Before, when he didn’t know, we got the small kernels of change. Ming is much more straight forward than he used to be. While he was never one to mince words, he is more truthful and up front, even with Joe 2.0. He is honest with him from the start about exactly what he wants. He doesn’t tell Joe the real reason why he wants it, but that’s understandable given that no one else is willing to believe Ming when he says Joe is still alive. So why tell this new stand in why you want him to be so.

Then he figures it out. He puts together the context clues and believes the impossible because he’s the only one who never gave up hope that Joe would come home, would come back to him. Joe does come back to him and Ming immediately sets out to ensure that Joe exactly where he stands in terms of how Ming feels about him. Ming needs Joe to understand exactly what he wants. Ming is probably always going to be the type of person who will use underhanded tactics in certain situations, but it’s completely understandable why he uses the contract to keep Joe with him.

Ming offers up explanations where Joe didn’t ask for them, because he knows that Joe deserves them, whether or not he asks for them. He wants Joe to understand that he regrets a lot of his past actions, including what he did for Tong at the end. Ming had all but admitted that if he could go back and change it, he would.

Ming is willing to confront so many issues head on. He is learning to deal with his emotions in a way that is more productive for them all. He has started to feel more of his emotions out loud in a way he didn’t before. He promised himself he would change if Joe ever came back and so far he has kept his promise. He will better himself and he will grow. He will no longer be stagnant.

He is even willing to tell his father that he is dating Joe. The mere mention of it clearly terrifies him more than he has the words to express, something that Joe picks up on right away and tries to protect both of them from. Preemptively breaking up with Ming to try and save them both a worst heartbreak than simply breaking up.

Tong had spent so much of the show attempting to prove again and again that Ming is under his thumb. He knew that Ming was in love with him in the past and still believes he is now, but he is wrong. Ming will no longer allow himself to be manipulated by Tong and by extension his mother. So he will shoot their ace out of the sky by doing the one thing that terrifies him the most. He will tell his father that he is gay. That he is gay and dating a man. A man named Joe.

He will accept what comes next because the only other options is to lose Joe and Ming absolutely will not do that for a second time. He is willing to lose everything, as long as it means he doesn’t lose Joe.

Before I go on I'll say that disconnecting is dangerous because what you think wont stop reality. It's a cycle within a bigger cycle of grief (likely mourning the freedom most women will never have). Being able to pinpoint your feelings makes it easier to handle them. I think the blackpill is the depression stage of the wider cycle of grief when you realise the world we're in. As you go through the motions of feelings - aim for acceptance. Acceptance doesn't mean being okay with the way the world is but just recognising it for what it is which will help you move forward (accordingly).

Realise it's not your fault - We were born into a messed up situation full of issues that wasn't our fault. These problems have existed way before we were born and will exist after we die. A lot of depressive feelings towards the climate is because there's a sense of (failed) responsibility felt over things we can't control. There's highs & lows for everyone with some having more highs or lows than the other it is what it is. You can't save everyone and it's not your responsibility to as all of this goes above us.

Use what you know to your advantage - Instead of disconnecting, you can use the blackpill to make more informed decisions. I can't speak for everyone but being blackpilled is something that further affirmed that I will never have children no matter what because I would never want to bring anyone to an environment like this. Another informed choice I make based on being blackpilled is not dating maIes knowing their nature so I don't delulu myself into danger or being used. Some will say you don't need to be blackpilled for this which is true but this is what I personally think. Obligatory not a wheelchair user (yet), but a cane user: to answer your question about why people don’t draw Scar’s wheelchair, from my experience it comes down to people’s discomfort about disabilities. Maybe it’s discomfort of being too afraid to draw wheelchairs or with their artistic abilities (in which case, how do they expect to get better by not practicing?), but it can also just be discomfort with disabled people as a whole. Hell, it took my family forever to admit I was disabled because they saw it as a “dirty” word, and that’s really common. I know of someone who hated disabled people because she didn’t think they were or could be pretty, and she wanted to only be around people who were pretty, but also know people who didn’t know how to react around my cane and would play with it or just pretend not to see it. It comes down to that discomfort with something they find unfamiliar or unattractive—basically, something they find undesirable. They don’t have to deal with it, so they elect for leg braces or crutches or canes because it’s easier. I don’t think they always mean harm, but from my experience it does do more harm than good because by not acknowledging those mobility aids and that discomfort it’s only made worse.

Anyways, excuse the long rant, but that’s just my thoughts from my experience and is by no means reflective of the entire disabled community as a whole.

this explanation makes a lot of sense and is mostly the conclusion i came to after i made the post. i was my mom's caretaker and advocate when she became disabled, and so many people started overlooking her, or would simply defer to me as if she wasn't also present and lucid.

it's completely mind boggling to me, overlooking mobility aids. asides from her, someone else i used to be very close with is disabled; he is a wheelchair user and when he came to visit our friendgroup, we spent so much time together since my car had the widest trunk to fit his wheelchair. and like. his wheelchair was decorated, stylish with very specific wheels and features for him. like. the idea of ignoring that in favour of my own personal comfort level is ?????? i can't really comprehend it.

going back to scar specifically, he spoke about his wheelchair colour, how he switches from orange to blue every other chair he gets, and has said that he doesn't mind people drawing him in it! even if someone doesn't draw him well the first or second time, it's exactly as you said: how can you expect to get better if you don't practise? i feel like when someone is drawing an irl adjacent scene or situation, and they draw him as fully able-bodied, it's just off. that's apart of him, whether they like it or not.

also, it's interesting how you also mentioned undesirable when that is verbatim what he said a few streams ago; calling himself so undesirable that people must find unconventional parts of him to compliment. i wonder if it becomes mentally taxing for him to see himself depicted as a buff able bodied man everyday as his physical health deteriorates, or if it has given him a complex about how people want to perceive him versus how he actually looks.

after seeing the poll about who in the batfam could be Deaf, I am now obsessed with how the masks could affect their sign. If they use their signing space differently when in the vigilante persona or not. Signing is so distinctive to each person that the code switching they do would be interesting to see play out in their ASL. Also thinking about what family signs the family would use to refer to batshit things in their lives. q

(the poll in question) i am deeply fascinated by the mechanics in which Deaf culture could play into the Batfam. bc most of them are wearing masks that would heavily inhibit ASL (given ASL is an expressive language) so i think it's more likely they'd use something akin to Makaton or Military Hand Signals that are not a fully developed language, but a communication aid, with a given set of signs for the typical things that need to be communicated in the field. meanwhile they'd be more likely to use ASL casually. (i'm unsure who all in the Batfam is confirmed to know ASL, but i know at the very least Bruce and Tim are)

i'm also very drawn in by the idea of other firms of assistive communication/tech used aside from just ASL. i personally find it believable that the masks of any of the Batfam could include automatic captioning tech that only they see through the inside of the mask, similar to captioning glasses at movie theatres, if they were Deaf/HoH. also how you would modify the concept of comm links to be more accessible, potentially projecting the message visually through the person's mask or maybe a wrist communicator sort of situation, depending on their personal preference. how the Batfam in general would interact with each other if one or multiple of them were Deaf would be heavily shaped and i think it's so fun. and i *love* the thought of personal signs they'd have to come up with bc well, ASL is hardly equipped for their lifestyle. also fun to consider sign names and if sign names are unique to the person or unique to the mantle. (eg, would the sign name for Robin be specific to which Robin, or just the mantle at large) there's so many little things that would change and i just think it's Neat. most people are approaching the poll from the perspective of their character of choice having hearing loss from vigilante work (which is a super valid way to approach it and i love those headcanons) but personally i find it fun if the deafness is a pre-existing condition and already something the Bat has been dealing with for years and thus approaches vigilantism needing to modify their gear slightly from the standard norm. how they could influence how Bruce trains them, emphasizing other senses. how they'd likely be far more tactical on the field, pressing their hands against something to feel for noise, ergo their gloves may be designed to more easily pick up vibration. (cannot tell you how much i do that irl) whether or not they'd hide it from the larger hero world is also an interesting question. it's all a fun internal struggle as well, internalized ableism and all. so much you could do with it!!

Prefacing this to say I'm deeply frustrated and exhausted writing this, so I might say stuff I don't mean or exaggerate. Might not seem that way, but I can be a HUGE asshole. If any of this has you scared I'm talking about you, text me, I wouldn't want misunderstandings.

I just...I'm just so chock full of negativity lately. Worst part is it's not even mine. Two of my friends who are basically married are having a rough period after one of them suffered a big loss and the other has been miserable with work, trying to help and probably burying their own frustration and all, and we others from the group have been roped into it trying to help them after one complained to us about some aspects of the relationship.

Many people I care for be it online or not are really struggling and miserable and I keep seeing or being texted really bad shit like depression, self harm or mentions of self-deletion and it's like...there's fucking therapists for this level of stuff. Hotlines. IRL friends who can come and grab you if you actually wanna do something that stupid. I understand reaching out to me and I love you and I cherish you and I'll help but you gotta understand, it's gonna wreck me. It's gonna leave me powerless and paranoid, and carrying the dregs of that awful feeling with me for days on end.

I was the anchor once, I'm fucking done. I'm genuinely so fucking done. I don't want to be reliable if this is what it fucking feels like. There's no satisfaction in this. Oh good, I helped Friend 1 overcome this, here come 2, 3, 4 and 5 with their own issues. Oh, and now Friend 1 is spiraling regardless and Friend 6 is feeling s-word and Friend 7 is whining about their lovely partner who's also got their own issues but tries so hard and it feels like they just can't see it, and I really just wanna punch something really hard because I work hard to keep my life going smooth and chill and to be able to relax and not have to worry about too many things or struggle, and just because I'm in a better position and empathic and studying psychology then fate apparently wants me to give endlessly to situations which are just not my fucking business to deal with, not to mention WAY too much for someone the likes of me.

I'm just real fucking tired of being nice to people if it leads to me becoming their 'feel-good-juice' tank for out of the blue therapy or sexting where I get multiple messages or pokes and shit when I'm genuinely just not in the fucking mood. Friendship shouldn't be my fucking job, I'll do whatever the fuck I please, whenever I please, because I please, however much I please and you owe me and my boundaries some basic fucking respect, which I have NOT received.

My new roommate (a new friend of my partner) decided a couple weeks after meeting me that I'm either "basically a child (that can't consent to sex or kink), or a disappointing adult that doesn't even try in life". I offhandedly mentioned autism and he said "everyone in this house is autistic, you're just using it as an excuse to be lesser". "Try harder, be better". He said I live in a "wanton way" (idk if he knows what that word means lmao) and that he can't stand it. He can't even pretend to be civil because my not trying is so unbearable. When I tried to reason with him calmly he got so angry and screaming that my partner and I were both kind of scared of him. I got slightly snarky after an insulting tirade from him, but I never called him names or got mad. But now he's pissed at me for distressing/traumatizing him by making him so angry, and convinced he did nothing wrong other than "get a little mad because you baited me".

The thing is, I am legally disabled. I can't work a job (according to me, my parents, past psychs, and the US. government fwiw) and I can't do several chores a day. This is just a fact. I HAVE been trying to do new things and reach outside of my comfort zone in big ways (doing more tasks, managing my health, going to IRL events despite my anxiety), but I'll always be disabled. Autism alone can be that disabling but I actually meet the criteria for several mental illnesses, as well as a sleep disorder, which he ignored when I told him. He believes that because HE is autistic/mentally ill and can do certain things that anyone can do them if they "actually try", "grow up", and stop making excuses for themselves.

It's hard because I deal with a lot of internalized shame for being disabled, and it feels like he lit a match and attempted to explode my self esteem in the name of some self-aggrandizing goal to "open my mind" and "improve me". We financially cannot afford to kick this guy out, so I just get to try to avoid him in a tiny building and also live with my new fear that he could lash out and hurt me. Emotionally at least. He has described himself as a "deeply angry person", my partner calls him "way too high strung", and I just live in anxiety that he'll flip out again. He's PROBABLY not violent at all but not knowing for sure makes it hard to live there.

And I'm having to process my sense of shame and guilt for not being Enough for this world. I hate being called a child and I hate having ignored how incredibly, incredibly hard I work just to function in day to day life. The laughable thing is when we met he seemed great and I thought we could be friends. Now I feel like I'll never be able to make friends (like at my events) because if a fellow neurodivergent person can't even accept me then who in the world will? I'll never have a healthy roommate relationship and no one I meet will ever tolerate me. I'm always alone (apart from my partner) and I hate how lonely and isolating life is.

Your roommate is an abusive ableist and I'm so sorry. None of this is on you. You don't deserve any of it. You didn't do anything bad. He's the problem. And while it's terrible that you're stuck in this situation for now, he is not everyone. I know and know of many people who found people to live with who both respect and accommodate their disabilities. It's not impossible, you were "just" unlucky to run into an abusive ableist. And I sure hope your partner is taking your side in all of this, because you are NOT the problem here.

this is actually a question i love answering, i love talking about the languages i'm studying! putting this under the cut because this is a little long haha

generally, i got into studying languages because i'm autistic and find studying the ways people communicate to be one of the most interesting things—it sort of evolved out of studying the way people imply things that they don't say outright, like sarcasm, double meaning, etc, and then eventually progressed to wanting to be able to communicate with as many people as possible and learn the ways that different languages deal with ambiguity and implication.

i'm including chinese because i am technically studying it in uni, even though it's not a language i have listed on my pinned. i'm studying it as a way to keep up my proficiency—i grew up speaking it, and i plan on moving back to china once i graduate. but also, now that i'm older, i can appreciate a lot of things i didn't have the ability or opportunity to as a child—i didn't really have internet access until i was in middle school, and by then i'd moved away from china and didn't really have anyone to talk with or classes with which to continue building my skills in it. now, being able to read it properly for the first time means that i can engage with a bunch of different types of media (webnovels, cdramas, etc) that i am far more culturally acclimated to than the majority of western media. i also love studying chinese because i get to learn little bits about history and folklore with things like chengyu, and honestly, i really prefer speaking chinese to english (in irl situations, at least—i have far less audio processing issues with chinese than english).

korean i'm studying because i really fell in love with the way it sounds! it's really similar to turkish in some ways when it comes to grammar and conjugation, with the various levels of formality. actually, the formality levels are one of the things that made me want to study it beyond just the initial interest! it's a very visible, clear structure that indicates the expectations in social interactions is something that i really appreciate, especially because i'm someone who tends to want to speak more formally when possible, at least with people i'm not very close to.

qazaq i started studying because i've been fascinated with the turkic language family for the past few years. in some ways it's really easy, because there's a lot of overlap in grammar with turkish—but in other ways, it's a stimulating challenge! the slight differences in conjugation of verbs, the slight variance of suffixes, the way qazaq tends to use the turkic-root words for some things turkish doesn't (it uses persian loan words more often). i also really want to travel to qazaqstan! i've also done a lot of research into qazaq culture and history from the 17th-19th centuries, as well as in the early 20th century, for a writing project, and i really fell in love with the things that are both similar to, and different from the southeastern turkish/kurdish cultural milieu i grew up with.

mongolian i started off studying because i found the traditional script to be gorgeous! vertical writing systems are relatively rare in modern languages, and i've seen so many people on xhs who make posts of themselves writing in the traditional script and i want to be able to do that one day. also, the vowel harmony makes it feel more "comfortable" to me, because it's shared with turkic languages. (actually, there's a lot of shared features in mongolian and turkic languages from geographical closeness, another thing i find to be fascinating—i love learning about the ways languages are connected!)

thai is another language i'm studying because i love the script—but also because i've always wanted to learn another tonal language! (i also plan on studying vietnamese at some point.) i love the way that thai sounds, it's so lyrical and gentle in comparison with the way i speak chinese lol (i don't have the strongest northern accent but it's very much not a southern one)

german i've actually been studying since 2017! i reached aroundddd probably ~B1ish in 2023? but i sort of fell off that wagon, so now i'm trying to get back to it! i'd really like to be able to read german novels, i know there's a decent amount of science fiction, and there are also german translations of cnovels that have gorgeous covers. and i genuinely like the way the language sounds! the consonant clusters are so fun to say ^.^

and then finally arabic, which is also not on my pinned, but i'll be starting to study it next year! i actually can read the script somewhat decently (grew up in a religious muslim family and community) but i've gotten really rusty in the past few years. i think arabic calligraphy is very beautiful and would love to be able to understand it some day, and also it's a really useful lingua franca, it's spoken in over a dozen countries, with a bunch of different variations! turkish also has a number of arabic loan words, which makes me more excited to learn it ^.^
