Tumblr media
‘My current practice focuses on one of the fundamental elements of human relationships, connection. This connection can manifest itself emotionally, spiritually and physically. The latter requires us to come together, meet, see and touch each other. This cannot happen without one crucial act, the journey that takes us to them. This, in the most part is achieved by various means and modes of transport.
The one I focus on and have been investigating throughout my painting practice is the journey by car and the relationship we have with the motorway and its landmarks. These visual representations of everyday topographies and the framed view from the car make up and form the basis of memories and nostalgia. The importance of these external landscapes is often mirrored by the internal dialogue of the driver and passenger with the confinements of the car at times offering an intimate confessional space.
The mundanity of these every day actions often belies the truth of deep routed emotions that come with well-travelled routes to the people and places that mean the most to us. In my paintings I aim to portray this feeling, emotionalism is a key element in the success of each one and as a viewer you are forced to look down the road as its sole traveler and undertake each journey as your own. Each bridge or landmark acts as the sitter in the landscape’s portrait, confronting you head on, holding your gaze as your mind travels under and beyond its concrete confinements.
The structures I focus on, often constructed from concrete and metal, brutal in nature, straddle well travelled motorways and roads. Unchanged and built to last, they offer sturdiness and a consistent presence that spans decades. They may be accompanied by the addition of graffiti or nature might have taken hold where possible, only adding to this presence. By documenting and recording these structures using the language of painting and drawing on the traditions of landscape painting, I aim to expand our perceptions and viewpoints and challenge how we look at these structures in our everyday landscapes. ‘

Good posture
Tumblr media
Self-taught Nash Weerasekera makes Illustrations, paintings and cocktails (… both for himself and clients). Born in Sri Lanka, Nash moved to Australia to study Architecture at RMIT, and now lives in Melbourne where he finds the definition of ‘spicy’ a tad disappointing.
Tumblr media
Working by hand and refining digitally, Nash’s crisp illustrations engage with social commentary, personal experience and the challenge of translating multiple messages into a single image for his editorial clients, which include The New York Times, Harvard Business Review and Forbes. He is most known for his book What to Expect When You’re Immigrating. With a finely honed practice, Nash is renowned among clients for his speedy turnaround, conceptual thinking and dramatic palette.

Anna Devís and Daniel Rueda
Flowergasted
Tumblr media
This month we're delighted to bring you this stunning summery piece by Spanish duo Anna Devís and Daniel Rueda. Their work makes you look twice, three times, and more. They're fun, stylish and so well put together.
Tumblr media
'Forbes 30 under 30 honorees Anna Devís and Daniel Rueda are two imaginative photographers, both born in 1990. They met at the Universitat Politècnica de València, where they both graduated from the School of Architecture. Today, this creative duo puts to use their architectural backgrounds to tell stories through fun and surprising images that are far from conventional architecture photography. Their particular style is characterized by their visual sense of humor, creativity, precision, and a delicate aesthetic inspired by the city, geometry, and minimalism.'
'By combining their spatial awareness and their artistic vision, primarily based on simple shapes and bold patterns, they have succeeded in establishing magnetic and joyful narratives that smartly suggest both the nature of human relations and the fascination with the urban environment.'
Tumblr media
'Although it may seem surprising or hard to believe, besides some basic image processing, Anna and Daniel create these surreal scenes without the use of photo editing software. Instead, they carefully set the scene in real life using all sorts of everyday objects, unexpected locations, and tons of natural light.'
'For Anna and Daniel, every unique story needs a unique location to be told in. Luckily for them, there are plenty of beautiful places on our planet waiting to be discovered. Set in all sorts of real-life environments, their images do not only celebrate constructions all over the world but also the cities they were built in.'
Happytecture is their new book and a brilliant piece for any coffee table, to entertain you for hours.
'In 'Happytecture', Anna and Daniel challenge us to look at the immediate world around us in a way we’ve never seen it before, unfolding the hidden beauty of street elements such as doors, windows and other urban vernacular to which we might tend not to give a second look.
The result is a visual love letter to architecture and urban design that is both personal and relatable.'

Creative Boom / Add Art Collaboration
Fuchsia MacAree and Murugiah
Tumblr media
I feel Tender by Fuchsia MacAree
I'm delighted to collaborate with Creative Boom to exhibit these exclusive designs especially created for CB - Micah
Fuchsia MacAree is an award-winning Dublin-based illustrator whose clients include Google, Facebook, and Airbnb. For Creative Boom, Fuchsia has created an exclusive artwork, I Feel Tender Toward The World, reminding us to enjoy calm.
Tumblr media
From Creative Boom: The first artwork is by Fuchsia MacAree, an award-winning Dublin-based illustrator whose clients include Google, Facebook, and Airbnb. For Creative Boom, Fuchsia created I Feel Tender Toward The World, reminding us to enjoy calm. "In making this piece, I was thinking about mindfulness and being present in the moment, and noticing small changes of light around me," she explains. "Observational drawing feels therapeutic, so taking some time to focus on a small detail, like the refraction of light in a glass of flowers, felt like an exercise in mindfulness in itself! The line is from The Country Girls by Edna O'Brien. It makes me think of being in those fleeting frames of mind where the world is exciting and new, and normal objects take on an otherworldly quality."

Sleep by Murugiah
Murugiah is an award-winning artist and designer based in London, born and raised in the UK with Sri Lankan heritage. Describing his style as "surreal, joyful and loud", he uses bright and bold colours along with detailed compositions to bring us art that is psychedelic, explosive and out of this world.
Tumblr media
From Creative Boom: Award-winning artist and designer Murugiah is behind the second artwork. Based in London, born and raised in the UK with Sri Lankan heritage, he describes his style as "surreal, joyful and loud" and uses bright and bold colours along with detailed compositions to bring us art that is psychedelic, explosive and out of this world. His piece is titled Sleep and features Murugiah's little character called MURU. "In this chaotic world we live in where everything, everywhere all at once comes at us daily, the idea of taking a break can even be daunting," says Murugiah.
"Sleep is one of the most important things we can do to recharge and improve our mental and physical health. So I hope in picking up a copy of 'sleep' fans can hang the print up to remind them to rest, take a break, relax and eventually get some sleep."
Tumblr media
Add-Art, which has exhibited artworks by Matt Blease, The Fandango Kid and Anthony Burrill, is looking for new sites to grow the project nationally. To support the scheme, go to Patreon. If you're interested in adding a gallery to your building, email [email protected].

Monica Obaga
Live music is back
Tumblr media
Monica Obaga is now gracing the billboard with this stunning piece which reminded me of how long it has been since music halls and gig venues have waited to let people in to perform and share music together.
Obaga is originally is from Nairobi, Kenya, but is now based in Los Angeles, she creates 2D, minimal, and geometric illustrations with clean lines in gloriously muted colour.
Her clients include: Instagram, Penguin Random House, WeTransfer (where I first spied her), AirBnB among others.
Tumblr media
Her interpretation of a mix of Kenyan traditional styles. She focuses primarily on producing work for social good or resulting in positive African media representation.
Tumblr media
Music venues have struggles this past could of year and was the last to be allowed back to trade. This piece made me feel celebratory about the coming back together as a live audience to see performers do their thing.
Only this week I went out and did the Holy Trinity of old haunts here in Manchester and had a whisky in each venue. A Bunnahabhain in Night & Day, a Laphroaig in Matt & Phreds and an Oban in The Castle - all venues I’ve seen live music.

Micah Purnell
Love Wisdom Grace & Hope
Tumblr media
Micah Purnell is an award winning freelance graphic designer, artist, curator and author, with a taste for Norwegian sweaters, in Manchester, England.
As an independent graphic designer Micah leans on his extensive network of illustrators, animators, photographers and web developers, which means you have a one stop shop for any project. In all his projects he uses Design Thinking to find new ways to create “AHHH” moments. These always bring positive, memorable experiences.
We work with a variety of national and global clients including the NHS, The Guardian, Wembley Stadium, Department for International Trade, Havas Lynx, Tearfund, Bible Society, Pizza Express, Elbow, and The University of Manchester, not to mention his kids, who get him running around designing logos for their various enterprises.
Tumblr media
Love is an action, a four letter word, a gritty - head down and work kinda word.
Wisdom knows. Wisdom seeks a listener. Heed Wisdom. Wisdom counters our self destruct mode and in this way is counter intuitive. Wisdom is closer than you think. Wisdom loves you.
Grace as understood as underserved favour, gift, gratis, without earning, freely given without condition.
Hope, hope is the catalyst.
As well as appearing in countless exhibitions over the last 25 years (including public group shows alongside Turner Prize Winner Douglas Gordon and global street artist JR), Micah has curated numerous projects with leading international artists, designers and thinkers on outdoor billboard galleries.
Tumblr media
Features in publications include (among others) Prayer by the world renowned Benetton photographer Oliviero Toscani, published by Fabrica, Italy, and This Is The Place, which raised £130, 000 for charity after the Manchester Arena Bombing.
His apparel  street ware takes his pithy quotes and strips them back into single worded, logo like emblems designed onto tees, jerseys and hoodies.
His work has appeared in The Guardian, Getty Images, Creative Review, Huffington Post, Creative Boom, Metro News, Artlyst, and Design Week. I’ve been lucky enough to speak ~ from London to New York and the People’s History Museum to the BBC.
