Dropped by the @pentictonfarmersmarket last Saturday and was surprised at how massive it is...like the whole downtown, spanning four blocks. They had everything from fresh produce, baked goods, and flowers, to food trucks, clothing, jewelry and other artisan products. Plus hula hoops, of course. It’s protea season in NZ right now and as they are grown throughout the country the season finishes in October. Was delighted to receive this beautiful bunch from @feelgoodwithflowers this week 🙏 They remind me of my beautiful Mum. It’s her birthday today and these were one of her favourite flowers, especially growing up in South Africa where they grow in the wild there. When she and Dad built their first home they planted a protea tree and we often had these beautiful flowers decorating the house when I grew up. Today I learned that the name protea means diversity, daring, transformation and courage. Happy Friday friends! Hope you’ve got some great plans for the weekend. Here’s the tomatillo salsa recipe I’ve been working on. Full details and recipe will be on the blog this afternoon. Ingredients: - 1-2 pounds fresh tomatillos - 5 fresh serrano or jalapeño peppers - 3-6 garlic cloves, unpeeled - 1 large onion 6 shallots, peeled and chopped - 2 teaspoons coarse sea salt - juice of 1/2 lime (plus more as desired) . Directions: 1. Preheat broiler. 2. Remove tomatillo husks and rinse under warm water to remove stickiness. 3. Spread peppers, garlic, onion and tomatillos on a baking sheet and broil, 1 to 2 inches from heat, turning once, until tomatillos are softened and slightly charred, about 7 minutes. 4. Peel garlic and pull off tops of chiles. 5.
