"When we follow our traditional diets, we’re healthier people. Our immune systems can stand up to the seasons. One hundred years ago, diabetes and heart disease were nonexistent in our communities . . . Preventable diseases rise when we don’t have access to traditional foods” (as quoted in Hoover, 2019, p. 64). Somehow I don't think this only applies to indigenous peoples... Vertical farming is a paradigm shift approaching food security in a rapidly urbanizing world. Our proposed food security research center in the Philippines furthers this innovation by integrating resource efficiency, advanced hydroponics, and climate-responsive design into one cohesive system. This tower symbolizes the potential for cities to produce food sustainably without relying on expansive agricultural land. This design also challenges us to rethink urban resilience and how architecture can lead the conversation on solving global challenges. By combining smart systems with purposeful architecture, we aim to bring agriculture back into the city's heart. How can such designs influence policymaking and urban strategies in the future?

This is not to ignore some of the incredible medical advances we’ve made like gene therapy or gene editing technologies to address genetic illnesses, wearable technology devices (eg. diabetics), and stem cell medicine. This is medicine I can stand behind. This is medicine used right.
I respect anyone in the medical field that see the gap I speak of, and are doing what they can (despite their hands being tied) because they genuinely care about people.
My concern is with the common practice of treating patients solely with medicine with little to no regard for nutrition, which is THE primary medicine. This gap is reflected in medical schools, in our food system, the American diet, and in our health.
If we are to ever see improvement we need to take back control of our own health, vote better with our dollars, demand better of our leaders, and close the gap. Nothing will change until we do.
We deserve so much better.

Seeds of Change: Answering the Call of Hunger
I open the cabinet—bare as the fields in winter.
Cereal and peanut butter, nothing more.
The fridge hums its emptiness,
a jar of pickles sits lonely on the shelf.
My stomach growls,
but I swallow the sound—
Mama’s on her twelfth hour at the hospital,
Daddy’s hands are blistered and cracked from working the land.
I can’t add my hunger to their load.
We don’t ask for help.
Pride keeps our mouths shut,
even when our bellies ache.
We tell ourselves, We’re so blessed.
And we are—
but blessings don’t fill the void of an empty plate.
At night, I press my forehead to the window,
counting headlights on the road,
waiting for Mama to come home.
Sleep doesn’t find me.
Instead, I wonder:
How will we pay the bills?
How will Mema get her medicine?
What will we eat tomorrow?
On the bus to school,
my head droops, heavy with exhaustion.
At my desk, my thoughts drift
to the invisible weight we carry.
Millions of people sit at tables with nothing to pass around.
Millions of people lie awake at night,
wondering if the next meal will come.
It hides in the shadows of pride and silence.
It wears the face of a child too tired to play.
It waits at the bus stop,
sits quietly in classrooms,
and prays for something more.
Food insecurity doesn’t discriminate.
It doesn’t knock before entering your life.
It just takes.
So, look in your cabinet tonight.
Feel the weight of fullness.
Now, do something with it.
Give, so no child has to wonder when they’ll eat again.
Speak, so no family suffers in silence.
Act, because hunger doesn’t wait for tomorrow.
It lives in this moment—
and this moment needs you.
Fill the shelves.
Lift the burdens.
Be the change.
And teach…
Teach hands to sow seeds in the soil.
Teach hearts to care for the earth that feeds us.
Show families how to plant hope in their own backyards,
how to water resilience,
how to harvest dignity and independence.
The answer lies not just in what we give,
but in what we grow together.

The Importance of Soil Health in Agroecology And Sustainable Food Systems
Tumblr media
In the realm of agroecology and sustainable food systems, one element reigns supreme: soil health. Often overlooked but critically important, the health of our soil directly impacts the quality of our food, the resilience of our ecosystems, and the sustainability of our agricultural practices. Let's delve into why soil health is so vital and how prioritizing it can pave the way for a more sustainable future.
Understanding Soil Health:
At its core, soil health refers to the capacity of soil to sustain plant growth and maintain ecosystem balance. Healthy soil is teeming with life, from microorganisms to earthworms, all working together to break down organic matter, cycle nutrients, and improve soil structure. It's a complex, dynamic system that forms the foundation of our food production systems.
The Importance of Soil Health in Agroecology:
Agroecology, a holistic approach to agriculture, emphasizes the interdependence of ecological, social, and economic factors in food production. Central to this approach is the recognition that healthy soil is essential for sustainable farming practices. By nurturing soil health, agroecological farmers can enhance crop resilience, reduce the need for external inputs like fertilizers and pesticides, and promote biodiversity on their farms.
Sustainable Food Systems:
In the context of sustainable food systems, soil health plays a pivotal role in ensuring food security, environmental sustainability, and social equity. Healthy soils are more resilient to climate change, able to retain water during droughts and mitigate erosion during heavy rains. Moreover, by improving soil fertility and nutrient cycling, farmers can produce nutritious food without depleting natural resources or harming the environment.
Practices for Enhancing Soil Health:
There are various practices that farmers can adopt to enhance soil health and promote sustainable food systems. These include crop rotation, cover cropping, no-till farming, agroforestry, and composting. By diversifying cropping systems, minimizing soil disturbance, and integrating trees into agricultural landscapes, farmers can improve soil structure, increase organic matter content, and boost soil biodiversity.
The Role of Education and Awareness:
While the importance of soil health is widely recognized among scientists and agricultural experts, there's a need to raise awareness among farmers, policymakers, and consumers. Education and extension programs can play a crucial role in disseminating information about soil health management practices and promoting their adoption at the grassroots level. By investing in farmer training, soil conservation initiatives, and public outreach campaigns, we can empower stakeholders to become stewards of the soil.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, soil health is the cornerstone of agroecology and sustainable food systems. By nurturing healthy soils, we can cultivate resilient farms, thriving ecosystems, and nourishing food for generations to come. As we strive to build a more sustainable future, let's remember that it all starts with the soil.
