honestly i still can't believe they described 8x06 are bucktommy going through "hurdles." hey oliver. oliver stark. hey oli. quick question: have you.... ever done track and field? have you ever leapt over a hurdle? because... that's what you do. you leap over hurdles and you clear them. they're obstacles in the way that you get over. what part of this was a hurdle? this wasn't a hurdle. this was bucktommy leaping over a hurdle, slamming it's leg into the metal frame, and then falling face-first into a pit of knives.
#sorry i'm mad as fuck about this. which. deserved#the way they handled this storyline and the breakup might go down in tv history honestly.#its definitely going down in QUEER tv history that's for sure.#how did you fumble this SO badly?#8x05 gave us hope only for 8x06 to shoot us in the back of the head with a fucking shotgun.#there's a chance they get back together but... it ain't looking good fellas.#whatever. i'll still have fanfic and the people i've met in this fandom. they can take canon bucktommy from me but they can't take that.#bucktommy#911 abc#911#911 discourse

I feel like a lot of internet folk would have a stroke if they saw colleges with queer studies courses and professors. Because that’s the accepted academic term. But those people also don’t trust academia even when it’s full of queer people, so they probably don’t know nor care that colleges even have those programs.

If Fawcett has all these heroes, how big is Fawcett?
Hi anon! This is a great question for people who may not know.
When I talk about Fawcett heroes, I'm talking about heroes created by/featured in Fawcett comics, not necessarily those that protected Fawcett City. Back in the day, Fawcett comics was independent and while many of their characters lived in the same general world, it was completely separate from the DC universe. So characters like the Marvels, Bulletman, Ibis the Invincible, etc. were the ones protecting the entire world, not just Fawcett City. Many of their adventures take place across the globe (particularly overseas because it was WWII and everyone was fighting Nazis).
Technically Fawcett City didn't even exist when these heroes were introduced. I think even Captain Marvel was set in a city meant to be New York City or a fictional stand in for it. It was eventually called Fawcett City as a callback to the original publishers (this was in the 80s I think?).
Since Captain Marvel was acquired by DC, most Fawcett heroes haven't been brought back in any meaningful way, so they functionally don't exist in the current DC version of Fawcett City.
Which is all a roundabout way of saying it depends!
Originally Fawcett City was probably NYC-esque in size, though not all of the Fawcett heroes would actually operate out of it. For a while after DC took over, Fawcett was probably a mid sized city (smaller than say Metropolis, but probably on par with Central City) located somewhere in the midwest. In current continuity it is technically a suburb of Philadelphia, so not that big at all.
I know it's pretty complicated but I hope this helps!
#ask me whatever you want y'all#shazam#billy batson#dc captain marvel#fawcett comics#fawcett city#comic history#it's a bit complicated and hard to figure out but that's because the answer has changed wildly over the years#a lot of what i think of when I think of Fawcett City was established in the 80s and 90s particularly in Power of Shazam#we need to bring back some of these fawcett heroes though#they deserve a second chance!

I keep seeing people in the ventress tag saying they read dark disciple and it was soooo good.... what part was good, exactly? the part where quinlan says he's going to make a stupid reckless decision and tells ventress to wait in the car and she's like "okay💗 yay💗"? the part where dooku kills her without saying a word to her because he was trying to kill quinlan, whose relationship with him was developed entirely off-page? the part where she's buried in the sexy revealing dress she hated because quinlan liked her best feminine? the part where quinlan gets treated like an idiot the whole book because "snarky grumpy woman and her himbo sunshine boyfriend" was the only trope they could apparently make work here? the part where the Jedi get a bunch of people killed and at the end are like "ah well, we've all learned a valuable lesson about the dark side!"?
#dark disciple#mannnnn i went in so unprepared for much i was going to hate that book#star wars critical i guess? whatever it may not even be canon anymore#the way they changed ventress' entire character the second she was 'in love'.... the way she collapsed emotionally when she lost quinlan#she's lost people before! it's her whole thing! she's stronger than she was when she lost her master. that's why she doesn't go dark again!#the back half of the book did both of them so dirty but especially asajj. her entire history w dooku reduced to 'they don't like each other'

In the wake of the IA situation, I've seen a lot more posts circulating about using your local library and I just. Sigh
#i dont know whether these people are thinking of Big City libraries#or their local is the most well stocked most accommodating library known to man#but my library consists of mostly kids books and ww2 skinned romance lites and james patterson thrillers#if youre lucky theres some pop history books on the tiny shelf in the back#oh also the opening times? 0930 to 1700 of course. yknow. when most ppl are at work :)#oh except sunday. when were just closed ;)#trying to get the library to bring in a specific book? sorry that'll be nine months and we'll send it to the library#in booksbury-upon-tyne which will cost you a £30 round train ticket (if the trains are running ;)) and a three hour journey#(cause were swr and life is a fucking nightmare)#im not doing that for a book im not even sure will be relevant to what im looking for yknow#i guess what im saying is that while i love the concept of libraries#they havent really evolved with the times. theyve been what theyve been for a millenia#and the intellectual value they were built to provide hasnt kept up with the funds theyre actually allocated#now i will say these are kinda complaints specific to me cause im not the biggest fiction reader#and if i am theyre mainly classics so my gripe is more with the proviso of non fiction books#and the variety of them which is incredibly narrow#and i dont drive so the intersection of this with the hellscape that is south englands public transport network also sucks dick and balls#like i realise the library provides a lot of necessary resources for older people and kids and those without internet access etc.#but that does leave a large swathe of people with little to no reason or time to visit the library yknow.#i dont blame the library workers of course but i also dont think its the visitors (customers?) fault#that there isnt a great incentive for them to visit#especially since i have found most of my fave nonfiction books in second hand stores#which would have either cost £80 new or would have been locked ina university library out of reach of the common folk#whatever. ramble ramble yada yada. ev complains again whats new

I dunno man I feel like most statements along the lines of ‘Batman isn’t REALLY x, he’s y’ don’t hold much water because usually, there’s a pretty good chance a number of writers over the years have written him as x, you just didn’t like it or think it doesn’t count for some reason.
For example ‘Batman isn’t REALLY a good parent, he’s actually a bad parent’, when Batman has been written as a good parent by a number of writers, and has, in addition, been written as realizing that he’s screwed up with his children and resolved to fix it by even more. At the same time, stating ‘Batman isn’t REALLY a bad parent, he’s actually a good parent’ is also incorrect, because Batman has been written as a bad parent by a number of writers, either intentionally or not; in addition, the pattern presented by the tug-of-war between writers who believe he should be a good parent and writers who don’t has, over the years, created an unintentional pattern that strongly resembles that of an abusive relationship. So, stating he is a good parent is inaccurate and dismisses a bunch of his canon writing, but stating he is a bad parent also dismisses a bunch of his canon writing and the intentions of the authors that wrote him.
The secret here is realizing that Batman has had so many writers over the years that it’s practically impossible to find a universal truth about him beyond the basic premise and maybe very, very basic characterization keystones. Writers with different beliefs about both the character and the world at large have written him in accordance to their worldview, and sometimes that worldview will align with yours, and sometimes it won’t.
Like, at this point, Batman is more an idea than he is a character. He is the bare-knuckled fight against injustice, but what ‘injustice’ is depends heavily on your worldview, as does what ‘bare-knuckled’ and ‘fight’ mean. Batman has been interpreted in dozens of different ways over the years, and singling out a few of those as the True Batman is largely arbitrary and dependent on your personal taste and belief in what the character should be. The only ‘objective’ measurement you could apply here are the old Golden Age comics, and I think most fans can agree that measuring modern Batman comics by how faithful they are to the Golden Age comics is, more often than not, a little ridiculous.
For the record, I do think that arguing about what Batman should be matters; if right-wing assholes use the character as a mouthpiece for their worldview we can and should critique that, but not because it’s ‘OOC’, but because the worldview espoused by those right-wing assholes is harmful and shitty. Batman should be a good parent, not because it’s ‘OOC’ for him to be a bad parent, but because having your paragon of justice be a child abuser is pretty shitty. Etc.
I don’t really have anywhere specific to go with this, I just think it’s a little strange when people try to view Batman as a character with a clear-cut characterization, rather than a concept that many people have approached in different ways over the years. Can that concept be mishandled? Sure. But it’s usually mishandled for reasons a bit more substantial than ‘a previous writer wrote it differently’.
#part of me feels like it's a cop-out to say#'batman isn't really a character so much as a concept and he can rarely ever be truly ooc'#'because he's been written by so many different people that practically any interpretation of him has canon back-up'#but at the same time. when you have a decades long history as one of the most well known pop culture icons of our time#i do think you kinda stop being a character and start being more of a concept#this post was inspired by a lot of stuff but the thing on my mind rn is conversations about why batman doesn't kill#and a lot of people being like 'saying batman doesn't kill because he thinks it'd turn him into an unstoppable killing monster is wrong!'#which. isn't true. that's a take many writers have on his character.#you may not like you or think it's stupid or whatever but. it's an interpretation of the no-kill rule with canon backing#and for that matter. even 'batman doesn't kill' is kind of up in the air with many writers taking a more relaxed stance on that#or even outright doing away with it. batman was also written before the concept of him not killing was added to his character#like. with a character with a history as long an profilic as batman. shit's complicated i feel#bruce wayne#my posts#infodumping

Love this interview... I have been semi-checking in on Zawe's journey since before certain stans were feeling some kinda way about her recent familial additions. I do for certain Black actors/creators especially, who seem to be moving in interesting ways in entertainment/film media...
-A remnant from a period when I used to go to screenings and blog about films (and was published a few times in a major national newspaper)... So, I knew of Zawe through the grapevine of her mentorship, i.e. she is the reason why Rege Jean Page of Bridgerton fame got to work in U.S. markets, as she sponsored him. And she is known, as one of those "good eggs" who will be accessible and help/advise especially young actors of color. ...But, I have some other stuff to say. This isn't about proving that she's an amazing human being. It's about a certain brand of misogynoir that some of these people far beneath her in self-knowledge, self-love, and just plain grown-ass-woman-personhood...keep letting fly in what they *think* are compliments, but actually are just trite microaggressions. Saying things like "as long she makes [T-blank H-blank] happy then she's alright" as if he's the centered human and her attachment renders her worthy somehow. Babies, as long as SHE'S happy. Yall. He's marrying up.
WAY UP and the fact that he knows this? Actually elevates him. She's been there.
She tells a story in the above interview that reminds me of Uzo Aduba's anecdote about her name , - of an incident when she was called to an early job (at 6!) and someone there said she wasn't pretty because of her gap and her Ugandan mother took her on past this person and into the room, ANYWAY.
... She learned a specific self-knowledge and self-love, that is necessary in very white western spaces that constantly pressures a narrow sense of worthiness and beauty, especially from Black women, something a lot of these small-minded stans don't even have a notion of seeing beyond. Zawe is biracial, and her features, aside from her skin tone are very African. So while she benefits from colorism, featurism is something I've seen those bigoted stans, pick on as well. She knows those features are what makes her beautiful and knew that, w/o and before her partner saw that too. And people who aren't blind narrow-minded ignoramuses can *also* see that. This is why I assert the fact of featurism needing to be in the conversation of light/dark privilege conversations. Lips, nose, gap, and even the set of her eyes are ethnic beauty markers within quite a few spaces in the Black African diaspora... My mom was an absolute stunner because of her gap.
Even the old school white model Lauren Hutton got there because of her gap. Uzo Aduba, who I have already mentioned has a deeper skintone and has similarly large round striking eyes, gap, and a non-pinched-nose *rightly* played Glinda in NBC's production of The Wiz a few years back, with Dorothy saying she's so beautiful *because* of those features, not despite them as a very narrow white-washed gaze would wrongly assert.
And while we're here that includes sizes and shapes too. I'm saying your boy is enjoying all that plush. A lot of yall need to read or reread Maya Angelou's Phenomenal Woman, for comprehension.
Anyway... All this to say I know Zawe is and will be fine regardless.
P.S. Maya Angelou *also* had height, and gap and was very much known for her beauty/magnetism as a woman when she was alive. :
#she's as steady in herself as ms. whoopi goldberg is and was back when ALL the comedians even some Black men were picking on her#for her African features meanwhile she pulled whoever she wanted and kept working and has her EGOT#I could also get into the notion that particularly worldly white folk with redhair are more inclined to understand#being picked apart or fetishized for a feature... and can have a leg up on empathy#especially I think when also in the spotlight#she also mentions sinead o'connor who also subverted standards and being an irish woman with her oppressive history pushed back with her ar#zawe ashton#interesting watch#meta#blah#getting ish off my chest#some of yall were comforted by the lie of a certain standard beauty being the only milkshake bringing them to yard#even beyond the misogynoir#grown ups in partnerships and marriages etc value other things and see beauty much differently when they mature.#I'm talking about grown ups some folks never grow to that point sadly#Youtube#I'm so glad she didn't quit acting#and I see TH giving his old theatre school buddies and Black women a word or boost or whatever he did.#...if he had a hand in that#love yourselves because of & not in spite of what you have going on

in moments like these we do need to ask ourselves. does it even matter to dinah if she’s the best fighter in the world. is that what motivates her. is she at a point in her life where trying to prove herself and her abilities makes sense. is this not something we’ve already covered.
#text.tb#dinah does not by any means need to prove herself to anyone she’s already done that#if you want to do something interesting with her maybe we can look at the fact that everyone she knows has undergone huge monumental shifts#in their lives and relationships#and she’s the stable one and she’s always the stable one#and what does that Mean to be the one who is reliable and consistent and dependable now#esp when you have a history of being anything but#how do you come to terms with who you are instead of who you’ve been#she can’t just do whatever she wants. sin is back lian is back Ollie is constantly getting into trouble#Mia is re entering the superhero world roy CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD#Connor still hasn’t come out to Ollie. somehow.#and dinah is there. the one everyone loves and trusts and relies on.#what’s that like girl how are you doing#she can’t even necessarily turn to Babs for anything bc Babs is back in the field and also with dick all the time#like do you get what i mean. do you see what I’m saying.#she’s getting older. she HAS to be responsible whether she wants to or not.#the question isn’t what is she capable of but what does she WANT.
