Chapter Eighteen: Meeting Sao Feng
Summary: (Y/N) and their friends need a map to Davy Jones's locker, and that means venturing to Singapore.
Two months later…
(Y/N) sat behind Elizabeth as she punted them downstream in the waters around Singapore. The song had recently reached the pirates, and the pair sang it quietly. (Y/N) sang it for all the people who had lost their lives as the East India Trading Company’s reign of terror began.
“Some have died, and some are alive,” they hummed quietly. “Others sail on the sea. With the keys to the cage, and the devil to pay, we lay to the Fiddler’s Green. The bell has been raised from its watery grave. Hear its sepulchral tone.”
(Y/N) watched as British soldiers stalked across bridges in search of more innocent lives to destroy. They caught pirates daily, yet they were the ones colonizing, pillaging, thieving.
“A call to all, pay heed to the squall, turn your sails to home. Yo ho,” sang (Y/N). “Haul together. Hoist the colors high.”
Elizabeth stopped the longboat and tied it.
            “Heave-ho.”
            They stepped out.
            “Thieve—”
“Thief and beggar,” said the guard of the secret entrance to Soa Feng’s pirate lair.
Sao Fang was the leader of the Singaporean pirates and the latest person they needed to contact in order to have a way to reach World’s End, the Black Pearl, and Jack.
“Never shall we die,” finished the guard. “A dangerous song to be singing for any who are ignorant of its meaning. Particularly a woman and a child.” He smirked. “Particularly when they’re alone.”
“What makes you think they’re alone?” Barbossa walked down to the canal.
“You protect them?” snapped the guard.
(Y/N) grabbed one guard, and Elizabeth grabbed another. They lifted knives to their throats.
“We don’t need protecting,” said (Y/N).
Barbossa grinned. After returning to life, he had worked with the crew of the Pearl to find it again. He had found that Elizabeth was a formidable pirate (especially after she threatened him with a sword to cut his throat if he tried to touch her, Will, or (Y/N) again). He had also discovered that (Y/N) was as dangerous as they had seemed fighting alongside Jack. In fact, he had become a little fond of (Y/N) (if only to hopefully piss of Jack a bit that his protégé could also be taught by Barbossa). All in all, he was enjoying the expert crew of the Black Pearl.
“Your master’s expecting us,” said Barbossa. “And an unexpected death’d cast a slight pall on our meeting.”
All the pirates looked at each other and hesitantly lowered their weapons warily.
“Pick those feet up!” said a British soldier. “Eyes front.”
The pirates retreated to the edge of the canal to avoid being spotted. Sao Feng’s guards led the way to the grate and into the underground tunnels of Singapore.
“Have you heard anything from Will?” asked Elizabeth.
“I trust young Turner to acquire the charts and you to remember your place in the presence of Captain Sao Feng,” warned Barbossa.
“What’s he like?” asked (Y/N), not promising anything.
“He’s much like myself, but absent my merciful nature and sense of fair play,” said Barbossa.
            Wonderful, thought (Y/N).
The guards walked up to a lock door and spoke a password. It was unlocked and opened to reveal a new passageway. Several guards held out their hands, and Barbossa began handing over his weapons. (Y/N) grumbled but handed over their sword, pistol, and daggers. Elizabeth, on the other hand, somehow procured over a dozen weapons from her person, hidden in places no one would think of except for her (even some unsavory places).
Finally, though, they were let into Sao Feng’s chambers. It was a sauna full of pirates being served by women with drinks and drugs. The heavy smoke of opium hung in the air, and (Y/N) wrinkled their nose.
Sao Feng himself stood on a dais, clad in leather armor with ornate embellishments. A large scar extended across his face, and he looked down his nose at the group. While Barbossa enjoyed the riches and glory of captaining and Jack adored the very act of being on the sea, it was clear Sao Feng loved the power he commanded in a room.
Barbossa bowed to appease his ego. He gestured to Elizabeth and (Y/N). Elizabeth bowed, and (Y/N) suppressed a roll of their eyes before bowing. Their skin itched. For two months now, every time they had to do something they didn’t wish to or had to obey another’s wishes that went against their own, the itch returned. The restless energy was deep in their body, in their heart.
“Captain Barbossa, welcome to Singapore,” said Sao Feng. He glanced at his servant. “More steam.” Water vapor pumped into the air. “I understand that you have a request to make of me.”
“More of a proposal to put to ye,” said Barbossa. “I’ve a venture underway, and I find myself in want of a ship and a crew.”
“Hm. It’s an odd coincidence,” remarked Sao Feng. His tone, however, suggested he knew more than he had so far revealed.
“Because you happen to have a ship and a crew you dont need?” said Elizabeth, raising a brow.
“No,” said Sao Feng. “Because earlier this day, not far from here, a thief broke into my most revered uncle’s temple and tried to make off with these.” He picked up a roll of maps. “The navigational charts. The route to the Farthest Gate.”
Elizabeth, Barbossa, and (Y/N) exchanged looks. Those were what Will had been searching for.
Sao Feng threw the charts to a guard. “Wouldn’t it be amazing if this venture of yours took you to the world beyond this one?”
“It would strain credulity at that,” said Barbossa.
(Y/N) nearly rolled their eyes, and they glanced warily around.
Sao Feng nodded to a pair of guards by a steam bath. They raised a log to reveal arms tied to it. Will gasped for air as he was raised from the scalding water.
“This is the thief,” said Sao Feng casually. “Is his face familiar to you?”
All three shook their heads “no.”
“Then I guess he has no further need for it,” said Sao Feng, rearing back to stab Will.
“No, no,” gasped Elizabeth, unable to stop herself.
Sao Feng stopped and turned around slowly. He had trapped them in their lie. “You come into my city, and you betray my hospitality.
Barbossa stood straight. “I assure you I had no idea—”
“That he would get caught!” interrupted Sao Feng.
Around them, Singaporean pirates stood and surrounded the group.
“You intend to attempt the voyage to Davy Jones’s locker,” said Sao Feng matter-of-factly. “But I cannot help but wonder…why?”
(Y/N) shifted, and Barbossa and Elizabeth both put a hand out. If (Y/N) were to speak up, it wouldn’t be polite, which wouldn’t end well. (Y/N)’s skin itched, and they shifted with unused energy.
Barbossa tossed a coin through the air in response to Sao Feng. He caught it, bit it to test it, and stared at it.
“The song has been sung,” said Barbossa. “The time is upon us. We must convene the Brethren Court. As one of the nine pirate lords, you must honor the call.”
Sao Feng narrowed his eyes. His hand curled into a fist. “More steam.” The words held all the frustration he wished to express. Nothing came, and he whirled on his servants. “More steam!” he bellowed. Still none.
“There is a price on all our heads,” continued Barbossa, distracting Sao Feng from what was most likely their crew interfering.
“Aye. It is true,” said Sao Feng. “It seems the only way a pirate can turn a profit anymore…is by betraying other pirates.”
Oh, bloody hell, thought (Y/N). It was a suspicious turn of phrase, even if he seemed to be addressing Will’s predicament.
Barbossa continued. “We must put our differences aside. The First Brethren Court gave us rule of the seas.”
(Y/N)’s gaze flicked to him, and their hands clenched at their sides. The seas weren’t to be ruled by anyone. They were free, wild, untamable. Like m—
“But now that rule is being challenged by Lord Cuter Beckett,” said Barbossa.
“Against the East India Trading Company, what value is the Brethren Court?” said Sao Feng derisively. “What can any of us do?”
“You can fight,” snapped (Y/N), their words breaking free. Sao Feng’s sharp gaze landed on them, but they did not cower. “You are Sao Feng, pirate lord of Singapore. You’re a commander in an age where brave captains still sail free waters, despite those waves being measure in fear and not feet.” Their stormy eyes flicked over Sao Feng, and it was as piercing as a needle. “And yet you would just watch such an era come to an end.” They met his eyes. “The most notorious pirates from around the world are uniting against our enemy. Their names will be remembered in legends.” A soft sneering smirk spread across their features. “Yours will be drowned in the bathwater you cower within.”
Elizabeth’s eyes widened, and Barbossa closed his eyes and cursed Jack for teaching them to be so mouthy (not that it had come from him. It was natural to (Y/N), and their natural self broke free more and more every day).
Sao Feng stared at them and stepped off the dais. (Y/N) refused to flinch or back away. Sao Feng circled them like a shark, gazing at them quizzically.
“(Y/N) Swann,” said Sao Feng. “There is more to you than meets the eyes, isn’t there?”
(Y/N) followed him with their eyes as he circled them and returned to the front.
“But I cannot help but notice you have failed to answer my question,” continued Sao Feng. “What is it you seek in Davy Jones’s Locker?” Barbossa opened his mouth, but Sao Feng held up a hand. “I want the small one to answer.”
That must be me since I’m the kid.
            “They seem to enjoy speaking.”
I’d prefer fighting. Thankfully, (Y/N) kept that thought to themself. “A friend.”
Sao Feng narrowed his eyes. “That is not an answer.”
            “It is,” said (Y/N).
Elizabeth fought back a sigh as (Y/N) decided to be sarcastic and play tricks with the pirate lord of Singapore.
“Jack Sparrow!” declared Will, breaking in. “We seek Jack Sparrow.”
            Laughter erupted throughout the sauna.
“He’s one of the pirate lords,” said Will, speaking over the derision.
(Y/N) watched Sao Feng run a hand over his head. They noted the slight tremble with curiosity.
“The only reason I would want Jack Sparrow returned from the land of the dead is so I can send him back myself!” he hissed.
It seems Jack left his usual impression on people on Sao Feng.
“Jack Sparrow holds one of the nine pieces of eight,” said Barbossa. “He failed to pass it along to a successor before he died. So we must go and get him back.”
“So you admit…you have deceived me,” said Sao Feng slowly. “Weapons!” He drew his sword.
All the pirates let out a shout and grabbed their weapons.
“Sao Feng, I assure you, our intentions are strictly honorable,” said Barbossa.
Through the slatted boards, swords flew up into the air. Barbossa, (Y/N), and Elizabeth each caught one. Barbossa caught the extra for Will. He coughed as Sao Feng narrowed his eyes. Obviously, their intentions had been honorable with a heavy dose of “just in case” dishonesty.
Sao Feng grabbed a Singapore man and held a sword to his throat. “Drop your weapons or I kill the man!”
(Y/N), Elizabeth, Will, and Barbossa wore identical expressions of confusion.
“Kill him,” said Barbossa. “He’s not our man.”
Now it was Sao Feng’s turn to look confused as he stared at the nervous man.
“If he’s not with you, and he’s not with us…who’s he with?” said Will.
            “Beckett,” breathed (Y/N).
            Bam!
The doors broke open the moment the name left them. “Charge!” cried the British. Muskets fired, and the pirates ducked and attacked as best they could.
Will used the pole he was tied to in order to rush into several men before they could fire. (Y/N) wove through the crowd and slashed through his bindings. Barbossa tossed him a sword. Elizabeth expertly dueled several soldiers at once, and (Y/N) handled their own crowd. They swept through the British, dancing through the attacks aimed at them. They flowed like water from one stab to another parry to a slash to a duck to a kick to a pivot to attack after attack.
From within the platoon, a familiar face emerged. Mercer stepped out, clad in black, and looked across the room of fighting pirates with his sharp, cruel eyes. They landed on (Y/N), and he raised a gun. It was not a pistol, though. This one contained a small dart to incapacitate its target. Of course, Mercer had a proper pistol at his side. If the child resisted…Well, Beckett said controlled or killed.
            Bang!
“(Y/N)!” Elizabeth tackled them as she saw the shot.
It flew over their head and hit the wall. Will ran to their side and hauled Elizabeth and (Y/N) up. Barbossa and Sao Feng cut down several attacks, and the group found themselves fighting side by side. Unfortunately, the British were closing in and had their muskets ready once more.
“Ready?” said Mercer, preparing another dart.
(Y/N)’s gaze flicked to it, confused but frightened at what it meant for them.
            “Fire.”
            Boom!
Instead of the crack of rifles, the floor exploded. The British collapsed back into the hole. The pirates shouted a war cry and stormed onward. Sao Feng grabbed the charts as they ran. The Black Pearl crew ran out from beneath the sauna, fired their pistols, and drew their swords. It was Singapore and Pearl pirates versus the East India Company.
The fight spread into the streets of Singapore as the pirates fled the British, and shops and carts were overturned as their keepers joined the angry brawl—fists were as much weapons at this point as muskets or cutlasses.
(Y/N) leapt over a table and slid under another. With a flick of their wrist, they cut through a soldier’s ankle, and he collapsed. Without being able to stand, (Y/N) ended him in another stab before jumping onto another table to gain the high ground. A soldier ran at them, and they jumped to avoid him. They grabbed the tent’s supporting pole, swung forward, and kicked him in the head. (Y/N) landed and darted towards the canals.
Behind them, a group of soldiers aimed to fire, but the cart behind them exploded. They fell dead and hurtled into the river. (Y/N) grinned behind them, knowing Tia Dalma stood smirking at her plan working.
They ran beside the canals, waiting to spot another friend to regroup.
            Boom!
This time not according to plan, a building exploded with a hundred unplanned fireworks. It was right behind them, and (Y/N) flew through the air. Their vision spun between dark and light, and they splashed into the water. They submerged, and their mind cleared. They pushed to the surface and took a deep breath.
Grumbling, they pulled themself to the walkway.
“Goin’ for a swim at a time like this?”
(Y/N) looked up, unamused, at Barbossa. “Putting on a firework show at a time like this?” they retorted.
Barbossa chuckled and pulled (Y/N) out of the water. Tia Dalma stood next to him and gazed at (Y/N) with a smile.
“How do you feel?” said Tia Dalma.
“Wet,” said (Y/N). “But fine.” They had only been temporarily disoriented.
            “I’m sure,” said Tia Dalma.
Will appeared from round the corner with a group of pirates.
“You have the charts?” said Barbossa, eyes locking on the bundle in Will’s arms.
“And better yet,” said Will. He tossed the charts to Barbossa and gestured to the Singaporean pirates behind him. “A ship and a crew.”
“Where’s Sao Feng?” Elizabeth joined the rendezvous with the rest of the Black Pearl crew.
“He’ll cover our escape and meet us at Shipwreck Cove,” said Will.
Barbossa nodded. “This way. Be quick.”
l
(Y/N) looked back at the fire still burning in Singapore as they sailed away. The water rippled around them as the ship moved smoothly over the water. They held the edge of the ship tightly. They had a way to Jack. They’d find him, the Pearl, and a way to stop Beckett. Freedom would win. It had to.
“There seems to be a lot on your mind,” said Tia Dalma, joining them at the side of the ship.
“I’m worried about Jack. What it must be like in the Locker,” said (Y/N).
“Jack is a man of no constancy, coming and going with the tide. But he is also one of great passion for what he cares for—adventure, life, freedom…” Tia Dalma looked at (Y/N). “But the Locker cannot take his heart. He will lose nothing but his mind.”
“Which was lost a long time ago,” said (Y/N) with a smile.
“Then you have nothing to fear,” said Tia Dalma, reaching out and touching (Y/N)’s hand. It was clear (Y/N) was attached to Jack, though how deserving he was of it remained to be seen.
(Y/N) hummed, and they glanced back at Singapore. “Do you think Sao Feng will answer the call now that it is clear he can be found wherever he hides?”
Tia Dalma’s expression grew grim. “I cannot say. There is an evil on these seas that even the most staunch and bloodthirsty pirate have come to fear.”
“We should hope someone will face it instead of fearing it, then,” said (Y/N).
Tia Dalma looked at (Y/N) with a mysterious glint in her eye. “We should hope.”

Ok I’ve been rewatching the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and I have some THOUGHTS!
(I have not finished the fourth movie so this is about the first three, tho really mostly the third one, At World’s End. This also mostly has nothing to do with Captain Jack Sparrow because he is perfect, no notes)
1) Why didn’t Elizabeth join Will on The Flying Dutchman at the end of At World’s End?
And you may be saying “Eli you have to be dying in order to join the crew!” Stab her! Easy fix! That’s how Will died!
Next you’ll try to be like, “Eli you have to be afraid of death to join the crew!” Bitch where? Yeah at first it may seem like that because Davy Jones is going around “are you afraid of death?” But the guys gambling their years? Will offering to join the crew for eternity as a bet? None of them were afraid to die in those moments! I think all that is needed is an agreement (most of the time audible) to staying on as crew and how many years they are willing to serve.
To anyone that wants to argue that being crew of the Flying Dutchman is an eternal punishment no it is not. It was only that way because Davy Jones created that situation from his own betrayal and grief. Will would never create such a hostile work environment so long as his father (and/or Elizabeth) are there to keep him sane.
So I think at the end of that movie Elizabeth should have either stabbed her self or made Will do it and join the Flying Dutchman’s crew for as long as he was captain. I think she would make it as first-mate while also still holding out her title as King of the Pirates so they could be equals to one another. Elizabeth goes to the pirates meetings as both the King of Pirates and representative for Captain Will of the Flying Dutchman. They live together happily. The End.
The only excuse I will take for Elizabeth not joining the crew of the Flying Dutchman is that she has given herself the duty of protecting Will’s heart as the King of Pirates which brings me onto my next point.
2) If Elizabeth Swann didn’t get to keep her title as King of the Pirates I’m going to riot!
I think if she didn’t become a part of the Flying Dutchman’s crew then she should’ve taken Will’s heart and kept it at the cove where all the pirates held their meeting! At the cove she continues building it up as a pirate stronghold and place of neutral pirate territory (meaning a place of relative peace).
“Eli why would pirates have a king who rules over them?” That is not what Elizabeth as the King of Pirates would be doing. She would hold the cove as a pirate stronghold, be able to call on the nine pirate lords when the need arises, be the final deciding vote in major pirate decisions that need a deciding vote, and be a middle man when pirates (specifically lords) are having major issues that can’t be resolved any other way. The cove would be yet another safe place for pirates to convene when they need to and Elizabeth as the King would oversee it with her crew.
In this she would have her own crew or multiple crews for different purposes. One of her crews goes to sail the seas and pillage and bring back riches for the cove and the other stays and keeps everything running, they can even switch off (other pirates would not be required to pay taxes to Elizabeth in this scenario). If you think a pirate captain owning multiple ships and crews under their command is unrealistic then look into the real life Pirate Queen Zheng Yi Sao (also just look into her cause she’s really cool and if you like pirates you’ll love her story).
This way Elizabeth could protect Will’s heart at the pirate stronghold she is king of but she could also still go off to sea to see Will when she wants to.
3)I hate love triangles and think polyam relationships are fun (basically fan fiction)
Anyone else watch the fight scene in Dead Man’s Chest and were like “damn James and Will should kiss.” Cause…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wow guys way to have both the gayest choreography and eye contact I’ve ever seen as someone who watched Spies are Forever. Like they also right after this fight over Elizabeth but damn if I couldn’t cut their sexual tension with a knife. Anyone else but Captain Jack Sparrow would have been so uncomfortable being the third wheel of this fight.
And I know what you’re saying “Eli James dies saving Elizabeth and her crew in At World’s End.” Yeah, ok, but what if he didn’t? This is my post about my thoughts I’m allowed to write some fan fiction while I’m thinking about it!
Anyway here’s my thoughts on how their polyam relationship could go if the writers weren’t cowards.
I think they all go on to do completely different things, separating for as long as they want basically. Elizabeth keeps being King of the Pirates basically as stated above, Will becomes Captain of the Flying Dutchman as he does in canon, and James either becomes a pirate himself (joining either of their crews) or keeps hunting down pirates as he’s been doing the whole series (preferably not working for the East Trading Company anymore for obvious reasons of the company just being the worst(you know what I’m talking about here)).
If James becomes a pirate he would stay on as Elizabeth’s first mate. He takes care of the other half of her crew while she’s away. James spends most of his time out at sea collecting treasure for the pirate stronghold but when Elizabeth wants to sail he stays at the stronghold to keep things (Will’s heart) safe there. Elizabeth and James take turns on visiting the Flying Dutchman.
If James continues doing as he has always done and hunts down pirates then there could be a much more interesting story there. I don’t think he’d actually continue to try doing any real damage, he’s more of a double agent. He pretends to be really dead set on hunting down the King of Pirates and the Flying Dutchman basically keeping all the other pirate hunters away from Elizabeth and Will. I’d love to see all three of them actually pretending to hate each other and be dead set on each other’s destruction but then when they capture each other they’re just like “are you doing ok? Do you need anything? Fruit? A warm blanket? Are you taking care of yourself?” And they’re just generally so sweet to each other. They play up hating each other because they’re all bored af and live for the drama ngl.
In that terms there are two ways it could go as they grow older. Either the hatred and bitterness become real and they actually end tragically or Elizabeth and James just join the Flying Dutchman’s crew and they continue on going and being really sweet and taking care of the souls they fairy on. Both options could be so much fun!
And with that onto the last real thing I wanted to talk about that has nothing to do with Elizabeth and Will.
4) Gay pirates getting married!
Just so everyone is aware this was a thing back in the day. Pirates very often got gay married and would share all of their loot with one another and basically do everything with one another. Sound familiar? Cause it should.
Tumblr media
That’s right. I’m 100% convinced these two idiots were married! And you might be like “Eli they made some pretty creepy remarks.” Yeah, they did, they’re pirates and bad people. Pirates don’t generally care about that type of stuff but I’m also sure they fucking talked shit out.
Anyway they definitely got married by Captain Jack Sparrow but then then they mutinied they got married again by Captain Barbossa just to “make sure it’s still legit” but in reality they just wanted to get married again. I’m sure Barbossa didn’t actually care tho as he enjoys weddings too and is always happy to up his Captain credits.
Also!
Tumblr media
Barbossa married these two as well! If no one remembers the end of At World’s these two join the pirates! I think that they got married like right after they left Jack and Mr. Gibbs. Barbossa again wanted to up his Captain credit.
That’s it those are most of my thoughts! If anyone wants to talk about any of what I’ve said here I’m happy to talk about it with someone. If not I’m honestly just surprised you read it all thank you!

So, Pinterest found out my love for Jorrington. However it showed me some other aesthetic scenes of AWE. Which makes me wonder, if he was still alive and survived, or perhaps kept alive by David Jonathan.
Tumblr media
What side do YOU think he would be on in the stand off, why, and what would his response be?
Does this differ to you depending on how he would be alive (escapee or enslaved by Dave Johns)
I imagine angles could be: Civil yet sassy, violent either by skill or having more numbers, obedient (to whomever is his leader).
david jonathan..............
i've definitely thought about this an inordinate amount, and my biases are on fully display as i say norrington would be at elizabeth's side, or at least hovering behind her glowering, when dealing at the parlay.
i've gone through a lot of mental turbulence over a version of events where norrington ends up a pirate, because it's so antithetical to what he stands for both as a vessel of themes and a character with feelings, i have a hard time wrapping my head around it. i think he needed to die in the canon narrative. HOWEVER. i think there's a lot of good theme resolution if he metaphorically dies on the dutchman to save elizabeth, survives and escapes with her, and casts out his former self to become a pirate, even if just to kill cutler beckett in revenge. it's more about loyalty to elizabeth and revenge than it is actually believing in what the pirates stand for than anything, but even getting to that point requires a major ego death.
for all that the title is hollow, norrington is an admiral and a lifelong seaman. he could outgambit beckett in a fleet vs armada situation, were the fleet at his disposal not a pirate fleet, and i think he'd have real valuable input at the parlay...just nothing he'd want to reveal out of hand, like everyone else.
(more thoughts below this got out of hand)
furthermore: consider that the pearl and dutchman have their final standoff during a maelstrom. his canonical ego death happened while chasing the pearl into a hurricane; if he follows elizabeth, he can help steer the pearl out of a storm to safety. the bookends! the parallels!!!
in this consideration i do imagine he's somewhere between the snarky-yet-stuffy cotbp and scruffy-and-blunt dmc norringtons, as you say. that's a great read, and a fun little thought experiment about who he is without the blade of duty/expectation hanging over his neck. civil with a sharp tongue and little reason to hold it back, but with renewed purpose and less of a vendetta against the world at large.
tldr: swap out his literal death with a metaphorical one and he'd follow elizabeth anywhere, especially to battle
(not to self-promo on an ask from a friend but i did write a 20k fic about this very subject; i'd change some stuff now but the bulk of my thoughts are in this big ass thesis. thank you for your time now back to the show)
although..........i am thinking very hard about the idea that he, like jones, is still being forced into service here? like maybe beckett keeps swann as a hostage not to keep elizabeth compliant, but to keep norrington compliant, to make sure the dutchman follows orders in the big fight.
(aside: i don't think norrington fears death or would want to live as anyone besides himself, so he'd never accept jones' offer of undeath unless it was to protect someone else from the same fate. hmm hmm much to consider)
either way: beckett brings norrington to the parlay just to flaunt "look how many of your people i have in my charge! haha!" maybe norrington is trying to drop hints to elizabeth that her father is still alive during the parlay, but she's focused on will being there ALSO trying to drop hints, and it gets messy fast.
having received confirmation that everyone ignores the puppet admiral and uses him for leverage, norrington frees both jack AND governor swann and escapes into the narrative. or something. hmm i'll workshop it
this is a very interesting idea!!! thank you so much for the ask

What it would be like to marry James : Enby Reader
Tumblr media
For @groovyfluxie, who wanted something about marrying James as a nonbinary person. I did this as a list of headcanons because my inbox is quite full at the moment, and I want to be able to get through everything. (Yes, I did bring up social standards at the time, just a warning. It gets happy, don’t worry).
James grew up in a household strictly regulated by societal standards. He still, of course, given his station, feels that there is an obligation for him to meet these standards. Anything outside the regular gender binary, is, at this point, looked down upon.
James is very used to these prejudices, and has been forced to hide many of his own feelings and urges to meet the expectations of society. For him, it’s second nature, though it’s tiring, and he secretly wishes that things weren’t how they are. He knows that anything he does will be in the public eye, and that he must be careful to maintain the reputation of his family.
He may find your being nonbinary to be a bit strange, at first, but he doesn’t particularly see why there should be a problem with it. It’s not like he particularly cares about the gender of his partner, though he knows he can’t admit to it in polite company. He knows that the only thing that matters is who you are as a person. Don’t forget that he still loved Elizabeth when she dressed as a boy and ran off with pirates.
James won’t let anyone talk down to you, and will defend you from anyone who decides that they’re going to have an unwarranted opinion. He’s a rather intimidating man, and all he has to do is give someone a glare before they decide their presence might be needed elsewhere. He knows you can stand up for yourself and take care of yourself, but he doesn’t want anyone thinking that it’s anywhere near acceptable for them to be judging you. He has a bit of a protective streak.
Remember in AWE, when James began to have that idgaf attitude? Yeah, that’s the sort of attitude he begins to have about society’s expectations. To hell with other people’s opinions; it wasn’t as if they were going to decide your futures, anyway. He realizes it’s a lot more important to be with somebody he loves than to listen to societal standards.
His proposal, is, as expected, awkward, but you know that that’s just how he is, and that he has a hard time getting his emotions across. You accept, of course, and he gives you that giant grin that lights up the room. He’s in a bit of shock. He didn’t actually think he’d make it this far in life, so he’s somewhat stunned.
In any case, your actual wedding would be too adorable. James would want to go with the traditional, though he might not necessarily care for a church wedding at all (I’m not entirely sure what the options were, at this point), but he’d want to keep to most customs and find a nice outdoor venue that capitalizes on Port Royal’s good weather. It would probably be modest, because he’s not a super social person.
He is absolutely the type to cry when his partner walks down the aisle. He gets very emotional during the wedding, having always wanted a family, and he can’t believe he’s finally getting that. He wouldn’t take his eyes off of you the entire ceremony, and would hold your hands tightly the entire time, beaming that darling smile of his. For usually being so composed, it’s nice to see James showing earnest emotion for once.
You’d have a nice reception, attended, of course, by the Swann family, as well as many of James’ crew mates. Whetherby couldn’t be more happy for James, and Elizabeth couldn’t be more happy for you. All the boys in the navy would be losing it; they can’t believe that their emotionally constipated commanding officer is getting married. They would be ecstatic, to say the least.
Actual married life with James would be peaceful and domestic. He still can’t believe that he’s sharing his house with someone; it excites him, but makes him nervous at the same time. He wants you to feel at home. Having your things mixed in with his is a constant reminder to him that you’re sharing a space and a life together, and it feels a little surreal.
He’s as sweet as can be, doting on you all the time. James is just that way. He won’t make you do anything you’re uncomfortable with, even if that means sleeping in separate beds. That being said, James is the most touch starved person on the planet, and will melt right into your arms if you hold him. He would appreciate sleeping with you more than anything—just the sleeping, too. He can’t get enough of his arms wrapping around you, holding you close to him. He really enjoys casual, non-sexual intimacy.
You’d spend a lot of your time together at home, preferring to be around each other than going out places. James wouldn’t know what to do, at first, but eases into being less stiff and formal, realizing that he can just be with you instead of needing to act any certain way.
Seeing him relax has to be one of the best parts of your marriage. The way he loses the tension in his muscles the moment he gets home, taking a deep breath and greeting you with open arms, warmth, and love is nothing but endearing. The two of you will spend time reading toghether, whether you’re reading your own books or reading to each other. He likes being able to hold easy conversation with you, talking about his day and things from your pasts.
It takes some time for him to realize that he can open up about deeper things, too, but it only makes him love you all the more when he figures out that you’d rather help him with his problems than not hear them at all. Once he knows that he can come to you about anything at all, he immediately makes it clear that you can do the same to him, and he probably cries a little in relief and gratitude for how loved you make him feel.
He, of course, wants you to feel the same, and never puts any pressure on you to do things. He doesn’t expect you to be solely in charge of the upkeep of the house; he probably hires a maid to that effect. He also doesn’t expect you to cook, though he doesn’t mind nights when the two of you make a meal together, and enjoys that sort of time spent together. This usually ends up making a bit of a mess, but it’s a nice thing to do.
Communication is key between the two of you, so any arguments and problems are eventually solved in a way that satisfies both parties. Other couples don’t quite understand how your marriage seems consistently happy, but you both know the key is being able to sort out disagreements.
Over all, you’d lead a soft, sweet life together. James has always wanted a domestic life, and having one is easily the best thing that’s ever happened to him. That’s not to say that the two of you don’t share plenty of adventures, but at the end of the day (metaphorically) and the two of you are back home together, the world kind of melts away and you can be in a world of your mutual making.

“ I do not engage in such behavior with women. Even if they are disgusting pirate vermin.”
“Murder and robbery are not principles,” she fires back, refusing to flinch in the face of supernatural horror. She has stared down the undead before, long before she became the Pirate King, and she is no less steadfast against a corporeal ghost than she was against walking skeletons. She doesn’t rise to the insult offered by Captain Salazar - it’s not the first time she’s been dismissed for being a woman, and she doubts it will be the last, particularly with the life she’s chosen. However, she refuses to give him the satisfaction of her offended reaction. “And if they were, at least they would be better guiding principles than selfish revenge.”

[Kingdom Hearts] The Shinrai no Kokoro
Summary: In which Sora temporarily makes Sabrina his captain during a trip to the Carribean. No better way to gain someone’s trust than to place them in absolute power, right?
Rating: K
Word Count: 2,691 words
If you liked this story, please reblog!
- - -
It didn’t matter how old he was, where he had gone, or what his mission was as a Keyblade wielder, there was a special part of Sora’s heart reserved for sailing the Caribbean. He didn’t have time to find Jack Sparrow, or see how Elizabeth Swann was doing, though- he had come on a special mission with a very special someone in tow. Not Kairi -to whom he did promise a private leg around the archipelagos-, but none other than the disagreeable Sabrina Sidney.
Sabrina was a friend -a very close friend, if certain people had their way- of Ventus. She was always disagreeing with someone, for no other reason than she could. Ventus (with a few moments to Aqua and Kairi) was the only one she seemed to occasionally open up to- something that Sora (as a friend magnet) couldn’t fathom. Who wouldn’t want to be his friend? How could he not want to add Sabrina to the list of people he could trust in times of need? Her persistence was admirable, and the way she thought certain problems through would impress Sora just enough to be in awe. But she had a chronic ‘can-not-spit-it-out’ problem. So when she just walked up to him earlier today to say she wanted to go to the Caribbean in his vessel, Sora was beside himself.
Among anything, he was excited.
Wearing his pirate attire again after so long felt like a hug. His hands on the ship’s wheel was like shaking hands with a friend. He would belt out in sea shanties if he knew Sabrina would enjoy them. Just enough so she didn’t tell him to be quiet and hide away in the captain’s cabin for the trip, at least. For now, he didn’t. Instead he kept his hands to the wheel as Sabrina occasionally checked the map and compass for their course. Sora liked when she placed her hands on the rail overlooking the lower deck and stood tall as she watched the seas roll past them. Her raven hair would probably be flying if she didn’t have it tied back into a bun, helped by the numerous braids of various widths to keep each flyaway in place.
He knew she wouldn’t admit it, but Sabrina liked to dress up as a pirate too. She wore a long sleeved linen shirt that fastened in the front- the top three hook and eye clasps undone to show a small portion of her chest to give fools with less respect than Sora a small show. The necklace she wore with a medallion sized pendant also helped emphasize the area. Her canvas breeches were cut a little below her knee, with small patches of wear that looked almost strategic. The coat she wore was a deep purple with golden embroidery along the sleeves and edges; the coattails were shorter than Sora’s, only reaching to mid-calf on her.
As she stood tall, you could almost feel the confidence radiate off of her. Sora only caught a glimpse or two just to show admiration. But he didn’t keep his gaze for long- he had a ship to command, after all.
“Doesn’t this feel great?!” Sora declared, hoping to garner her attention. “The wind through the sails, the smell of the sea, nothing for miles but us and three different shades of blue…”
“And the constant reminder you grew up on an island...” Sabrina noted with a dull tone. She looked over at him, the disapproving look on her face proving to be nothing more than a major downer.
“This trip was your idea.” he reminded her, almost in a smug little voice. It didn’t phase her in the slightest. “At least have a little fun, Sabi.”
“I’m not on a Gummi Ship, I don’t have to.”
“You didn’t laugh once on the way over either,” Sora also pointed out. Not long after a wide, mischievous grin crossed his face before he said, “Although I do think it picked up your thoughts on surprising Ven…”
He was barely able to dodge her attempt to whack him. However, his hand was still on the wheel, so the ship violently turned before Sora was quickly able to steady it again. He offered a sheepish grin in a half baked apology. Sabrina huffed before returning to study the maps. Sora’s grin didn’t stop as he looked over her for a moment.
“Oh!” he then realized. “We need to establish this ship’s rules!”
Sabrina looked up again, her expression less than amused.
“What are you talking about?” she questioned.
Sora’s grin got even wider. “You, Lady Sabi, get to be my fine vessel’s captain. But only for today! We’re on a very important mission, and you’ve got the maps.”
“Whatta joy.”
Sora offered her a boastful grin as he gave his nose a little brush. “It’s all for Ven, right?” he mused. “You’ve got the maps for the treasure you’re giving him. It only makes sense to make you captain for the day. Now, where’re we headin’, captain?”
“Keep the course straight,” she told him, looking between the map and the compass, “Eastbound all the way.”
“Aye, aye madam!” Sora agreed with a salute before maintaining their course. The start of a new journey causing a buzz in his body. He was even taking it with one of the most solidary people he knew too! It was enough to almost make him want to sing. In fact…
“Yo ho mateys, away!” the young man almost belted out at the top of his lungs, “There’ll be treasure and adventure today! Heave-ho, here we go, together as a team! Captain Sabi and first mate So-ora, are we!”
Sabrina did absolutely nothing to hide her groan as she buried her head in her hand.
. . .
The duo dropped anchor when they came to a small cove hidden behind a dormant volcano. They both took an oar on their little rowboat so they could get closer in. Sora got out first so he could help Sabrina out, she took his gesture with some hesitation. Just the acknowledgement made Sora happy. He didn’t leave her side once as they ventured further in.
“There.” Sabrina said when she noticed something on a large rock ahead of them. Sora let her go on ahead, but something out of the corner of his eye made him pause.
“Sabrina,” Sora spoke up, “I don’t think we’re-”
He didn’t have time to finish as a loud wail filled the area. Sabrina and Sora immediately recoiled from the sound. When they were able to collect their bearings again, someone else was indeed with them. A siren now sat on the rock. Seeing her caused a chill to run up Sora's spine, and he immediately went to Sabrina’s side. Sabrina, too, had become more apprehensive at the newcoming.
“Who dares to take my treasure from me?” the siren questioned, its voice not quite male or female. Its black and blue eyes flicked from Sabrina to Sora and back again with a dark gaze.
“I am.” Sabrina said without an ounce of hesitation. “What of it?”
The siren raised an eyebrow at her.
“The treasure here, the Shinrai no Kokoro, can only be taken by one who passes my test. Do you accept this challenge?”
To this, Sabrina scoffed. “Well, if you’re going to make it complicated...” she grumbled, her eye roll deliberate as well.
“Very well.” the siren agreed with a nod. The siren then opened its mouth to let out a sound that made Sabrina recoil so badly, she had to cover her ears. To Sora, it had a different effect. His muscles started to relax, his pupils dilated, and his mind took a backseat to the soothing sounds of the siren. Once it was sure he was completely under its thrall, the siren stopped its song.
“That’s your test?” Sabrina questioned. “Some high pitched wail that did nothing?”
The siren smirked at her. It then turned its gaze to Sora and gave a nod. Sabrina found it odd, immediately turning to look at Sora as well.
“Sora?” the young woman asked, cautiously looking him over. “You alright, there?”
Sora summoned his Keyblade. Sabrina let out an annoyed sigh.
“You have got to be kidding me.”
Sora raised his weapon and pointed it at her, the tip blazing in preparation of a magic attack. Sabrina immediately protected herself with Barrier before it had the chance to hit her. As she called her own Keyblade, it left her open for a new attack. The possessed young man readied his Keyblade before driving toward her. A sound of surprise escaped Sabrina’s lips as she fumbled out of the way. How she ever avoided that was beyond her- and, unfortunately, the siren was not done with Sora yet.
“Why do you seek the Shinrai no Kokoro?” Sora asked, his voice mingling with that of the siren’s. It was hard to tell if they were simply talking at the same time, or just an effect of the siren’s control over him.
“Because I wanted to give Ventus something nice for his birthday. It’s, like, a week from now. Which you would know.” Sabrina sharply told him, jumping out of the way from a rather hard hitting swing. She quickly turned to the siren to seethe, “If you’re going to possess someone, the least you could do is leech his memories before asking obvious questions.”
The siren simply offered half a shrug in response. Sabrina had some choice words for the creature but didn’t have time to say them as she happened to parry another blow from Sora. The shock of it caused him to stumble backwards slightly.
“Why give the Shinrai no Kokoro to Ventus?” Sora asked.
“Do I really have to say it?” Sabrina groaned. She almost didn’t notice that Sora was preparing to perform Sonic Blade and was nearly hit at the first blow. It would have been a successful dodge had he not clipped her arm on the last strike.
“Fine!” she shouted in aggravation. “It’s because I like him! And since I don’t show that I like people in a ‘normal’ way, these few times when I do would mean more to the people around me. Especially for him. He doesn’t give up on me in a way that isn’t annoying or overbearing, and deserves to know that I do see it. The least I could do is remember his stupid birthday.”
The siren gave a small sound of approval at this. Why was a concept that was going to grade on Sabrina’s nerves for awhile. Not that she had much time to think. Sora, despite not being a ‘master’, still apparently knew enough to have an upperhand while possessed. Maybe the siren was just drawing out his frustrations toward her- if they truly existed. Wouldn’t that be a fun concept? It would explain why his inner mind apparently had no resistance to all of this. Not that Sabrina was going to go on and beg for him to snap out of it either.
What she needed to do was think smarter, not harder. She moved to an area where she could get a better read on his attacks. It wasn’t much, but there was a definite moment where Sora had to configure his body before attacking- like a puppet adjusting its limbs so the strings did not get tied up. It was enough of an opening that when he rushed at her again, their Keyblades let out a loud clang as they connected. Sabrina and Sora were now in a deadlock. Up close, Sabrina could see the haze over Sora’s eyes from the siren’s control.
“Why choose Sora to accompany you?” Sora asked her as he pressed their Keyblades closer together. One of them would have to give soon, their strength was close to being evenly matched in this state. Sabrina did not plan on being disarmed first.
Unfortunately, in a way, she still had to.
“It’s because you’re the only one I trust with this.” she admitted, somewhat in a grumble. “I am capable of seeing when someone wants to get through to me, and I know the Carribean is your favorite world, so of course I would ask you to help. You’re the only one I could ask. I…” (the young woman took a moment to give a small, disgusted groan) “I trust you.”
As the words came from her mouth, the grip Sora had on his Keyblade started to weaken. His pupils returned to normal size as he gave several confused blinks.
“Wait…” he slurred- his voice belonging just to him again, “You mean that?”
“We wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.”
What Sora did next happened so quickly that Sabrina was caught completely off guard. He dispelled his Keyblade, bringing her to rock forward a bit from the sudden weight change, then he launched himself at her to give a tight bear hug. The force of which knocked them both to the ground. Sora’s laughter filled the cove as he held Sabrina tight. The siren gave a small, approving smile at the display, even as Sabrina started to demand for Sora to get off of her.
Even after Sabrina managed to shove him off, Sora still laid on the ground in a happy -practically relieved- laughter. Sabrina scoffed at him as she got up. She took time to brush her pants and jacket before giving her shirt a little shake to get the sand out.
“You have done well.” the siren approved, earning the attention of both teens again. “Come.”
Sabrina adjusted herself a bit more before taking careful strides to the siren. Sora, his laughing starting to cease somewhat, also got to his feet but he did not stop her. He could quite clearly see the siren hold up the palm of her hand; a ring nestled inside that was silver with green and purple jewels embedded within it. Sabrina opened her hand as well, allowing the siren to let the ring drop on her palm. The siren smiled as she covered Sabrina’s hand with both of its own.
“The boy you give this treasure to will value it above gold.” the siren informed the young woman. “Not because it has any true value on its own, but because he knows it came from your heart.”
“As all sappy gifts go.” Sabrina huffed. The siren offered a soft smile before her form dissolved into a pile of sand.
Sabrina turned around to go back to Sora, letting out a long, tired sigh in the process. She slipped the ring onto her finger for safekeeping. It fit so well, she wondered if whatever magic kept it the perfect size would still work when Ven got it. Sora patiently waited for her to be at his side again. He gave the ring a look as well. It was rather pretty, and for a moment the two of them just admired it. If it had any rare magical abilities to it, he wouldn’t have been the one to know. But it must have had something special to it if Sabrina thought Ventus would like it.
“We’re ready to head out captain.” Sora told her, standing tall as he gave her a salute. Sabrina blinked, looking up at him with a confused glance. It took her another minute more to even realize what he was saying.
“Then get back to the rowboat.” she told him, her usual attitude returning in full swing. “We wasted enough time here as it is. The last thing I want when we get back is Aqua questioning where we went. If Aqua questions where we were, everyone questions where we were, and there goes Ventus’s surprise.”
“Aye, aye madam!” he agreed, finishing off his salute. He then gave a rather gleeful laugh as he started to run back to the ship. Sabrina watched him with a small shake of her head, unsure if she should be annoyed and amused. She looked back down at the ring then back at him.
“Thank you, Sora.” she said, soft and barely audible, before following him out.

A List of My Absolute Favorite Fictional Men
Seriously. I want to marry each and every one of them (not that I’m advocating polygamy, of course). Now, in no particular order...
(Warning: Spoilers)
Tumblr media
1. Inspector Rycroft Philostrate (Carnival Row)
This man. THIS MAN. I love him with my whole heart. He’s a bit rough around the edges, but he’s incredibly kind, compassionate, empathetic, and just, not to mention selfless to the point of stupidity. I have a thing for self-sacrificing heroes; you will notice a pattern. Philo takes responsibility for his own actions, from the huge, life-changing ones down to the little, trivial ones, and that is HOT. He’s a tortured, haunted soul, and yet all he seeks to do is save others from pain, despite his own hardship.
Favorite Moment: In episode two when he hears that Vignette’s employers want her arrested for breach of contract and he goes to the Spurnroses to buy her contract, thus freeing her. He never tells her what he did, never expecting any reward. He does it simply because he loves her—and because it’s right.
Tumblr media
2. Commodore James Norrington (Pirates of the Caribbean)
James is literally a Jane Austen hero in a Disney movie. Enough said. He is one of the most underrated characters in the entire series. He’s a man of duty, of honor, of justice, but that never stops him from being a good (and very sassy!) human being. He loves Elizabeth Swann with all his heart and goes well out of his way, even risking his life, for her. When she chooses another man, he accepts it with grace and wishes them well, but he never stops protecting her even while expecting nothing in return. This man respects women and their decisions. Need I say more?
Favorite Moment: The deleted scene from TCotBP where he takes Elizabeth aside and tells her that she doesn’t have to marry him just to save Will, and that if she marries him, he wants it to be because she truly wants to. It establishes that he doesn’t want to force her into anything and that her opinions and feelings matter a great deal to him. The fact that this was deleted is a crime.
Tumblr media
3. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars)
Ah, my middle school obsession. Those were the days. Sense of duty? Check. Honorable? Check. Responsible? Check. Compassionate? Check. Selfless? Check. Sassy? Check. Cinnamon roll with a tortured soul? Check. Beginning to notice what traits I value yet? Obi-Wan is such a genuinely good man who endures so much undeserved pain but never lets it steal his kindness. It triggers my Mama Bear instincts. Precious baby. Get him some tea and some therapy. He also never wavers from what is noble and good, even when faced with great pain and temptation. He’s quite possibly the greatest Jedi of all time.
Favorite Moment: Literally any time he’s being snarky. It’s glorious.
Tumblr media
4. Aragorn (Lord of the Rings)
In truth, I could list almost every single male character in LOTR, but I shall refrain. If you don’t think Aragorn is perfect, you have questionable taste. Honestly. He’s kind, compassionate, humble, courageous, determined, responsible, loyal, and completely willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. He’s the ideal leaders should seek to uphold. He always does what’s right, always resisting temptation, always doing what he believes to be best for others.
Favorite Moment: In the ROTK book when his true identity as Heir of Isildur is revealed to the people of Minas Tirith in the Houses of Healing because “the hands of the king are the hands of a healer.” That’s right—he’s an amazing warrior and brilliant military commander, but what’s most important, most definitive, is not warfare, but healing. That is absolutely beautiful.

5. Will Turner (Pirates of the Caribbean)
How can you NOT love this beautiful cinnamon roll? Look at him! Look at those puppy eyes! Will’s character development is both brilliant and heartbreaking—he goes from a shy, eager young man who can’t keep his heart out of his big brown eyes to a reserved and haunted man who’s lost almost everything he’s ever loved. Love—that’s Will’s defining trait. He can be a clueless idiot sometimes (the most lovable of clueless idiots), but all he does, he does for those he loves. Every choice he makes and action he takes is for those he loves and what he believes to be their best interests. Did I mention that he’s also kind, gentle, fearless, clever, and selfless? Much like James Norrington, even when he believes Elizabeth loves another man, his #1 priority is her happiness—even if it’s not with him. Again, respecting women’s choices is sexy!
Favorite Moment: If I HAD to narrow it down, I’d be a complete liar if I didn’t say the end of TCotBP when he finally confesses his love to Elizabeth, stands up for what he believes is right, and then they share a kiss as the sun sets behind them. PEAK ROMANCE TM.
Tumblr media
6. Professor Remus Lupin (Harry Potter)
Remus doesn’t do much for me in the movies, but I am head-over-heels in love with him in the books. He’s such a genuinely kind person who’s always patient, gentle, caring, and understanding toward others, specifically students. More than that, he’s very level-headed, always the mediator in tense or difficult situations and always the one to comfort others. (Also, his solution to everything is chocolate, and that works for me). The fact that he sees himself as such a monster that he believes himself unfit to be a husband and father just breaks my heart. He’s such a wonderful human being and his death BROKE ME.
Favorite Moment: In the HBP book when Tonks confesses her feelings for him, insisting that she doesn’t care that he’s a werewolf, and he argues that he’s “too old for her, too poor ... too dangerous...” No trope gets me like the “older man thinks he’s too broken to be loved but younger woman breaks through his defenses and shows him he can be loved” trope. Self-sacrificing hero, much?
Tumblr media
7. Colonel Brandon (Sense and Sensibility)
Honestly, I could list every single Jane Austen hero on here, but Colonel Brandon is my favorite. His quiet adoration of Marianne and steadfast devotion to her get me every time. The most wonderful thing is that he never presses her, never imposes his feelings upon her or asks her to do something she doesn’t want to do. She prefers Willoughby, and he accepts that but continues to help her when he can, never requiring anything in return. He does it all because he loves her, because her merest smile is reward enough. He never pushes her, but he also never gives up on her; when she ends up heartbroken, he supports her and helps her heal. Hmmm, have I mentioned that respecting women’s choices is pretty dang hot yet?
Favorite Moment: When Marianne goes out walking in the rain after Willoughby breaks her heart, and Brandon carries her unconscious, fevered body back to the house, subsequently dashing across the country to bring her mother to her.
Tumblr media
8. Samwise Gamgee (Lord of the Rings)
So, I know I said I wouldn’t include any more LOTR characters, but as it is, I lied. How can I NOT include Sam? Wonderful, darling Sam! A lowly, humble gardener who ends up on a quest to save the world and is in fact (arguably) the true hero. His friendship, loyalty, and determination never waver, despite all the immense hardships he endures along the way. He is called Samwise the Brave, but Steadfast would serve just as well. He’s the kindest, sweetest, most courageous and unlikely of heroes. He rarely has a bad word about anyone (unless it’s 100% true) and he never gives up, even when all seems lost. He understands that love is the most important thing of all.
Favorite Moment: In ROTK when they’re almost to Mount Doom and Frodo has no more strength to continue, so Sam declares, “I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you!” and he hoists Frodo onto his shoulders, even though he himself has little strength left, and carries him to the mountain. My heart! Makes me cry every time.

Fanfic Rec: 00Q Part 3
It’s been more than a year! I have totally been procrastinating in doing this if I’m truly honest. A lot of things happened in my life as well! There are good and bad things, but what matters most is that I still have a number of fics to recommend for you! I haven’t stopped reading, don’t worry.
Also I think it’s a good time to post my list. The next Bond movie has released its trailer and the 00Q crumbs we got from the trailer got a lot of shippers back on board. If you’re that person, you might want to check these fanfics out!
To see the other parts, click here for part 1 and for part 2.
Let Love In by dhampir72  [Words: 21,437 | Teens and Up Audiences] They're still learning that love is more of a journey and less of a destination. [A series of interconnected vignettes].
Ulysses by girlbookwrm [Words: 89,065 | Teens and Up Audiences] “Paperwork for the new head of Q-Branch,” Tanner said. “Of course.” The words were like glass in his throat. Smoke inhalation was a bitch. His brain felt slow and foggy, like it was full of smoke too. “Who shall I take them to?” M lifted one white brow. “They’re for you, Quartermaster.” Bond and Q are drawn together by names, work, and a certain Aston Martin. In which Q is kidnapped once, Bond is poisoned twice, and Eve is a badass on at least three occasions. AKA that time I tripped and wrote 80,000 words of 00Q. All titles unapologetically stolen from Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
Espionage is a Family Affair by nagapdragon [Words: 78.403 | Mature] It's common knowledge that angels make good weapons and terrible soldiers. They're hard to kill, hard to catch, and leave a swathe of destruction wherever they go. That's why MI6 likes them. James Bond, Agent 007, is one of the most devastating weapons MI6 will admit to having. Explosions follow his every whim and he's nearly impossible to kill, despite the best efforts of terrorists worldwide. He's second only to the weapons MI6 pretends don't exist- archangels are only a theory, after all. Aren't they?
Bond to You by therunawaypen [Words: 5,749 | Mature] Bond isn't a name. It's a rare breed of people that have designated soulmates, to whom a Bond will be eternally faithful to. Every child dreams of being a Bond's Chosen soulmate. James uses his status as a Bond to seduce many a mark into thinking they're his Chosen, while deep down he resents his identity because he has been unable to find his Chosen. Then he meets Q that fateful day in front of that painting.
How Q Hacked Online Dating by JayPendragon [Words: 23,836 | Explicit] “How does that lead to…?” Eve waves her hand at the mess behind Q’s back. Q feels his expression morph into a sly grin. “I have a new plan. I’m going to stay on these dating platforms, but I’m going to treat them as databases. Rather than waiting for an algorithm to set me up, I'm going to try reverse-engineering this entire system.” In which Q works in the private sector, still winds up friends with Eve, and applies science to his love life. Obviously, Eve gets involved.
Leading Edge by Batsutousai  [Words:  7,251 | Teens and Up Audiences] All fae-born were raised on stories of how cruel dragon-borns were, how they had no care for anyone outside themselves and their greed, that they would sell their own mother's soul to the devil before allowing themselves to be hurt. They were told that all dragon-borns were to be killed on sight, and taught spells that would do just that, if ever given the chance. It would be just Q's luck that one of his agents was dragon-born.
Pen and Paper by Salios [Words:  5,300 | Teens and Up Audiences] Q wrung his hands anxiously, teeth gnawing at his lower lip. It was a bad habit, biting his lip, but he couldn’t help it when he was nervous. And he really did have reason to be nervous. Well, excited to the point of nearly crippling nervousness, actually. Today he’d finally get to meet his boyfriend of three years. For the first time ever.
people can surprise you (or not) by pdameron [Words: 10,538 | Teens and Up Audiences]   “I’m not you, Bond. I don’t exactly have a technique for getting rich strangers to like me.” “Just do your naive cute puppy thing, and they’ll be doting on you in no time,” Bond replies as he pulls up to the grand estate. “My what?” Q asks incredulously. Bond doesn’t answer, simply giving him an indulgent smile. The fucker. (or: 00q meets Gosford Park. Except not really.)
A Common Solution by SailorChibi  [Words:  17,654 | Teens and Up Audiences] Bond has been ignoring his biological needs. Boothroyd is retiring and MI6 is in need of a new Quartermaster. What do these two things have in common? They both have an easy solution... if only M can get Bond to extract a certain hacker  NOTE: This does not have the “James Bond/Q” tag, but I’ll add it in my list anyway.
Taken by Nana_41175 [Words: WIP | Explicit]    Or, the cheating fic that *nearly* is! Q is engaged to be married, but not to Bond. Excerpt: Bond blinked. “Boyfriend? What do you mean, boyfriend?” “I mean exactly that,” said Moneypenny. “Honestly, what’s the matter with you? Q’s been seeing someone for over a year. And if I’m not mistaken, Daniel is going to pop the question on him this evening. Dan asked me for advice on the ring, after all.” NOTE: This is currently a WIP fanfic, but it’s almost done with 2 chapters left to be posted. Would be a bummer if I don’t add it, right?
His Keeper by Nana_41175 [Words:  45,482 | Explicit] Protecting the Quartermaster entails a special set of circumstances, and Q is the last one to know. Excerpt: “Your identity has been compromised,” M said as he leaned forward in his chair, his features grim even as his tone remained even and calm. “I am standing you down from all your duties in Q branch. Kindly hand in all personal computers and devices. I am placing you on administrative leave, effective immediately. You need to disappear for a while, Q, for your own safety. Think of this as the holiday you never had these past two years. We will get down to the bottom of this and repair the damage done; otherwise I shall have to ask you to step down. ”Q gaped at him, finally speechless. “At any rate, quartermasters are entitled to double-O agents as bodyguards, when the need arises, and he personally volunteered,” M continued as though he’d not just dropped the equivalent of a bomb and a death sentence through slow torture rolled into one, “and I do agree that under the circumstances, 007 would be the best choice as your bodyguard.”
Daddy and Uncle James by 1MissMolly [Words:  26,115 | Teens and Up Audiences] James Bond can remain cool and collected in the most trying of circumstances. He is an expert at hand to hand combat and marksman with numerous weapons. He can seduce any woman or man he chooses. He has the highest success rate at achieving his goals, and he has his sights on the young Quartermaster. The only thing standing in his way is the only thing that will surely defeat him. A six year old girl named Elizabeth Park. Bond's planned seduction of Q is interrupted by the arrival of Q's daughter, Lizzie.
Treason, Traitors, and Treachery by Kryptaria, zooeyscigar [Words:  63,230 | Mature] All James Bond wanted was a quiet holiday on his luxury motoryacht on the Costa del Sol. Time to recuperate and think about his future with MI6. But his plans get hijacked when a traitor to the crown returns, bringing news of an even greater threat to MI6. And the traitor isn't working alone.Thankfully, neither is James.
Playing the Part by ElektricAngel [Words: 23,116 | Teens and Up Audiences] James Bond comes into Q Branch after a mission with all of his equipment accounted for and in tact, and a complete mission report in Q's inbox. Q is pleasantly surprised and more than a little suspicious. Rightly so, as it happens, because Bond makes an unusual request of him. And yet, his license to kill is not the only thing that makes the man difficult to say no to...
Breathe With Me by Flantastic [Words: 7,575 | Explicit] When James Bond goes back to MI6 following his disastrous relationship with Dr Madeleine Swann, Q wants nothing to do with him. Then there's an accident in Q-Branch...
Bittersweet by dr_girlfriend [Words:  14,229 | Explicit] The first time Bond flirted with Q, it was purely out of self-defense. The second time Bond flirted with Q was largely manipulation. The third time Bond flirted with Q, he just wanted to feel something. The fourth time Bond flirted with Q was out of sheer boredom.Somehow, flirting with Q became something of a habit for Bond. And then, it became something else.
A Bond of Matrimony by enigma_kar [Words: 12,691 | Mature] The one where Bond’s next mission involves going undercover with Q. Includes: banter, fake marriage, espionage, car chases, life-or-death situations, and Moneypenny taking far too much delight in the whole affair.
as permanent as stone cathedrals by pdameron [Words: 6,002 | Teens and Up Audiences] Q has been in love for two years, six months, and twelve days when James Bond walks away, leaving him with a bleeding head and a broken heart on a dark and noisy London bridge.
just like old times (please don’t ever change) by Rosslyn  [Words:  5,173 | Teens and Up Audiences] Sometimes when Q is alone in his workshop and there is an experiment that needs to be supervised and he can’t go home and he can’t sleep, he watches Bond’s vitals.
How Much Love Can the Weight of Water Carry? by 00QEros (Dassandre) [Words: 39,549 | Explicit] Though Bond returned to MI6 after his ill advised jaunt around the globe with Madeleine Swann, Q still struggles with his own feelings for the agent in spite of the fact that Bond is clearly not the same man as the one who walked away from their friendship on Westminster Bridge. James regrets having left London and MI6, but it is nothing in comparison to the remorse he feels for abandoning Q. However, James has made repairing their friendship his primary goal in the hope of gaining something he never realised he needed as badly as he does. But Bond really hasn’t had a good time of it lately. Breaking his leg in a freak accident, James camps out at Q’s flat when the white-washed, soulless walls of Medical become too much for him to tolerate. Unfortunately, his leg is only the beginning of Bond’s health problems, and Q is conscripted into being James’ caretaker. Confined to the close quarters of Q’s flat, the Quartermaster finds himself opening back up to the agent, but will the two men find their way to one another as they should have done years ago, or is time no longer on their side?
So I guess that’s it for now! I still have a couple in my belt, but most of them are still WIP so I’d keep them for now. I’ll be adding them once they are finished.

Okay, I've just got a thought (actually, I got it quite long ago) and I want to... well, share it now, I suppose. (My English is bad, bad, bad. ) So, James and Elizabeth. And the couple they... don't make at all.
Wait a moment. I have nothing against Norribeth. I've read really great fics about them, and I loved it, and I truly admire 'Redemption's Promise' by norrington-hell 'cause it's one of my favorite fics. Not only in this fandom but at all. But I myself (completely personally) don't see James and Elizabeth as lovers.
Not because I myself have Catherine (who has all this French and sarcastic stuff and who actually shares James' devotion to his duty and loyalty to the Crown), not at all. Well, it would be strange if I didn't love the relationship between the characters in my own fic but I don't put Elizabeth aside just because 'I have a better and loving woman for him, you, *itch!!!'. No. It's not about some headcanons and etc, it's only about the movies. The main problem for me is that James and Elizabeth doesn't work together as a couple right from the start. I know that people sometimes have problems with them being already acquainted when Elizabeth is twelve and James is... well, at least, eighteen, but he's a sailor. And a military one. He could leave Port Royal even for a year or two, going just anywhere he is commanded, and then return, find out she's grown up and only then fall for her. He definitely acts like she's nothing more than a child in the prologue of the COBP. Just look at the way he smiles when he speaks to her. He's only polite and not interested in her at all.
Tumblr media
And this WORKS. When he tries to play that sort of an older brother looking over a naive girl. It should've stayed this way when she's grown up, but it doesn't and everything goes... bad.
He proposes, she falls from the cliffs. With James being that smart as he is in the movies he should've already thought that it was a bad idea. Then Elizabeth is taken to Isla-de-Muerta, saved by Will, goes into battle (who, by the way, taught her all these tactics? Of course, she's read books but she reacts too fast for someone who's never been into battle), then she's left on an island with Sparrow, then rescued again and... things get worse. She literally manipulates James into saving Will and I truly regret that they cut off James' phrase 'Mr Turner is the subject of the English Crown and thus is under my protection'. It would've been better (in my opinion) to show that James is still the man of duty. And that he hesitates not because he doesn't care about Will's life (he does as he looks quite... tormented, so to say, when Governor Swann says they will return to Port Royal and not go after The Pearl), but because James cannot risk Elizabeth' and her father's life as they are civils, nobles and etc. He's the man of honor and duty, he doesn't make rash decisions and he knows that he cannot endanger Governor of Jamaica because of a blacksmith' apprentice. While Sparrow is all that freedom stuff, James is strict and harsh but not merciless. That's what makes him so interesting as a character. He does what he has to even if he doesn't want to. Even if it's literally torments him but he knows that it's his duty. And still he, first of all, tries to do what he believes is right. (That 'Fuck off, Beckett, I am leaving' moment.)
While Elizabeth is... well, selfish and sometimes even shallow. She literally humiliates him in front of the whole Fort Charles and still acts like 'What? I did nothing wrong'. While it's James who did nothing wrong and Elizabeth couldn't even speak to him in private. She's the Governor's daughter, she has her father on her side (who said earlier 'A right decision made for wrong reasons can be a wrong decision') and what is she afraid of? That James might answer 'All right, I thought better of you'? Yeah, better slap him in front of half of his men, girl. And after he saved your dearest lover and lost many of his men in a battle with immortal cursed pirates. Great. (No, not at all.) People sometimes get surprised that Elizabeth left Jack to the Kraken, but well... Elizabeth was that kind of person right from the start.
Luckily, they did cut off that phrase 'Good luck to both of you'. Yes, James steps aside showing that he accepts and respects her decision but he has a sense of self-respect. I'm pretty sure that if Elizabeth were a man there would be a duel. James didn't react the way he might only because she was a woman. (Don't throw stones at me, it's 17th or 18th century, and relationships between men and women used to be different that time. And it still was in public.)
Tumblr media
(Just look at his face! What the hell is wrong with you, Elizabeth?)
Tumblr media
This is what I always disliked about this couple. They know each other for quite a long time but still don't understand each other at all. James knows that he has his duty while Elizabeth is all about her own freedom. And the moment James starts doing what she wants him to do, he steps on the road that will lead him to the loss of everything he has. And then even to death. While Elizabeth is like 'Oh, I've known him for at least eight years, and now he died after I manipulated him once more literally saying he killed my father. All right, let's fight for freedom!'. What the hell is going on here, ha? They have at least two scenes when she mourns about Sparrow (in the boat and in Tia Dalma's house), and then it like 'James! Ah, fuck off, James, I have important business with pirates'. Well, she doesn't love him, she doesn't care, I understand. And I don't hate her because of 'Go away from my beloved character' or something. But James deserves much better. He deserves a woman who will understand his struggles between his own honor and his duty to the Crown. He deserves a woman who will accept this and love him for who he is and not in spite of this. And Elizabeth is definitely not that kind of a woman.
And I myself actually see James being older than he is usually shown in fanfiction. Well, books and etc tried to show that he was like twenty-six in the COBP, but... well, being well-known pirate hunter and already promoted to the Commodore at such a young age? Well, he is definitely great as a sailor and a military man but still not that much. Or maybe he's too young for me. (Or it's me who is too old now and is just not attracted in this way to a twenty-six-year old man.) I see him as being almost twenty-six in the prologue of the COBP and being in his early thirties (thirty-three, to be more precise) during the main part of the movie. And working hard all these years as he wants to achieve high rank because of his own heroism and cleverness and not because of his father being an Admiral or something like that. Considering their relationship, James would desperately need to be respected and loved because of his own achievements and not because of his father's rank. Although I don't see any problems with James and Elizabeth being in love while he is more than thirteen years older (she's already twenty during the main part of the COBP, and I am a history nerd so I know about enough marriages with such an age difference that actually succeeded as loving and caring relationships), but I still don't see connection and attraction between James and Elizabeth. He actually looks happier when he saves The Dauntless from the hands of the pirates than when Elizabeth accepts his proposal. I'd rather believe that he proposed because it was... well, expected from him. He is the Commodore of the Royal Navy, the brave 'Scourge of Piracy' and all that, and she is the Governer's daughter and all that. She's a 'fine woman'. He cares about her but she's not the woman he loves. And it's a 'good match'. But it's not about love and passion as between Elizabeth and Will. In my opinion, James and Elizabeth communicate in much more interesting way when they act like some sort of friends. One of my favorite scenes is when he said 'Didn't you think how your fiancé got on The Flying Dutchman?' and... SHE DIDN'T GET IT. She even used the compass and still didn't get it. Oh, come on, go after him and make him explain! He is trying to build some sort of friendship between you two. And it would be even more interesting as in this historical period men and women were considered to be husbands and wives and not friends.
But Disney lost it. Yeah, better make him die for a woman who doesn't even care about him, that's what we all want. (No.)

a darker shade of magic: review
synopsis:
Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.
Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.
Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.
After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.
review under the cut!
stars: ★★★★☆
First of all, although I rated this book 4 stars, there were some issues with it (mainly involving representation and characterization). I rated it 4 stars because I enjoyed reading it despite its issues, but I recognize that the mediocre representation may turn others away from this book.
characters & representation
Before I begin this section of the review, I would like to say that I am not visually impaired and therefore do not have any authority on that subject. My comments on the treatment of Lila's missing eye are merely based on my own observations and what I have heard from visually impaired people on the topic.
Lila:
A cross-dressing thief and aspiring pirate with a penchant for knives, Lila Bard brings to mind the likes of Inej Ghafa from Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows and Elizabeth Swann from Pirates of the Caribbean. There were times when I really liked Lila; she can be sassy and morally questionable which is always interesting to see when well done. However, her character had a few issues that I wanted to address.
“Delilah Bard looked like a king. No...she looked like a conqueror.” pg. 289
When will fantasy authors stop romanticising conquerors and colonization?! This may be a smaller issue since aside from White London (which is villainized) there is no mention of it in the overarching plot, but this line just really bothered me. It makes me think that V.E. Schwab is a fan of adult and YA fantasy authors like Sarah J. Maas and others who write their main characters to be colonizers and romanticize it in the process. I don’t think this line was necessary at all, and I wish the second sentence had been removed or modified to something a little less problematic (e.g. she looked like a pirate/captain/etc.)
"How did you lose it...your eye?" -Master Tieren, pg. 327
It is revealed near the end of the book that Lila has been missing an eye for as long as she can remember, and she wears a glass eye as a replacement. This is all well and good, but the consequences of her impaired vision are never explored. The only reason the reader knows that Lila is missing an eye is because the author tells them. The narrative never discusses how Lila's lack of an eye affects her day to day life, and it's only brought into the story when it is needed for the plot.
It’s also worth mentioning that Lila is the only female character with a large role in this book, and no matter how “feminist” her character is, there’s not a lot of women in this book that are portrayed positively and with depth.
Rhy:
I actually really liked Rhy and I loved his relationship with Kell. I love sibling love in books and we so rarely get positive sibling relationships, so this was nice to see! It’s also really important to have queer people of color in books. However, I don’t think Rhy’s character is good bi/pan representation (I will refer to him as bi in this review for the sake of brevity, but it’s worth mentioning that neither term is mentioned so Rhy could canonically identify as either).
“He would flirt with a nicely upholstered chair, and he never takes anything seriously.” -Kell, pg. 254
As a queer girl who has identified as bisexual in the past and may in the future, this is bad bi rep 101. Schwab is perpetuating the stereotype of the “promiscuous bi”, or one who flirts and/or sleeps with everyone and everything. This is not a bad characteristic in itself, but it is harmful bi rep because that is the way every bi character is portrayed in media. It reinforces the idea that bisexual people in real life are all like this, and it also reinforces biphobes’ points of view when they say that bisexual people are more likely to cheat because they sleep with more people. This is pretty much the most common stereotype of a bisexual person, so while I doubt that Schwab intended to be harmful in her portrayal of Rhy, it shows that she did not do much research on LGBT+ rep when writing her characters. I do know that some bi people were not bothered by this; however, I believe that writers should stay away from stereotypes, especially when writing characters that are marginalized. Even though promiscuity is not an inherently bad trait, it is harmful when applied to bisexual people because it reinforces real peoples’ beliefs and affects real life bisexuals. This is especially important here because Rhy is the only narrative-confirmed LGBT+ character in the first book. It's not the worst representation I've seen, since Rhy does have a personality outside his flirtatiousness and promiscuity (in fact, it's confirmed that this is a coping mechanism for him) but it's certainly not the best, and I'm just tired of seeing bisexual people represented this way in fiction.
Kell:
I know a lot of people who didn’t like Kell very much, and that is understandable. However, I found him really compelling. It’s refreshing to see a male lead in this genre who’s not jacked and a brooding asshole whose only redeeming quality is his dick size. He’s definitely moody, but not to the point where he becomes an abusive alpha male type guy (yes, I am aware that this is a very low bar). I genuinely enjoyed his character because he’s flawed. He’s stubborn and moody but he’s incredibly caring and he genuinely wants to help people. He feels alienated from his family so he rebels and gets himself in trouble. His character is written well because he’s not perfect by any means, but he’s still likeable and you still root for him.
Holland:
Holland is what every YA love interest wishes they were. Honestly. He’s given no excuses for his actions, and yet he is still sympathetic. You understand that he is under the control of Astrid and Athos, but you also understand that all he has done for years is carry out their orders, and that changes a person. His story is heartbreaking, but that doesn’t change what he has done. He knows it, Kell knows it, Lila knows it, the reader knows it. Honestly, if he were in a YA fantasy romance, I bet Holland would be the love interest; his female “mate” would change him for the better, and he would never face the consequences of his actions. That makes his arc in this story all the more enjoyable. Holland is one of my favorite characters of all time, and not because he’s a perfect “book boyfriend” or whatever, but because his story and character are genuinely interesting and executed well.
worldbuilding
I loved the worldbuilding in this book. There was a bit of an info-dump in the beginning, but I’m willing to look past that because the world was so engaging and interesting that I forgot about the dense first chapter once I got past it. Each London has a distinct feel, and they are all almost tangible. The descriptions of each made me feel like I was in the Londons along with Kell and Lila. It seems like the system would be complicated, but Lila sums it up well:
“There’s Dull London, Kell London, Creepy London, and Dead London.” -pg. 198
After the initial info-dump, Schwab weaves information about the magic system seamlessly through the book, leaving enough mystery for the reader to wonder at what might happen in the next books, but never leaving out so much that the reader is confused. I really appreciated the rules that existed around magic. It’s draining, and Antari magic requires blood, which means there is a limit to how much you can perform at once. Magic is seen to affect the world beyond the characters and their main conflict, which I was very happy about as well. There are too many fantasy novels where the magic system has no rules and only exists to further the plot, but in this world you can see it everywhere. The politics of Red London and White London are affected by magic, even where it is not necessarily relevant to the plot. You can see small amounts of magic being performed in the streets of Red London: spells to protect from thieves, etc. Magic is normal for the people in Red London, and it is treated as such in the text.
pacing & plot
This book flew along. I’ve read it multiple times now, and every time, I can’t stop until I finish. And then I want to move along to the next book immediately. It manages to keep up a great pace and still build up to an exciting climax. Schwab’s lyrical writing is not flowery, but it draws the reader in and carries them along the story effortlessly. It’s very engaging and accessible language, which makes it a good stepping stone into adult fantasy (especially if you’re coming from YA).
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The representation that it gets praised so highly for is disappointing, but aside from that I enjoyed most of the characters and the writing was beautiful. The plot and world were engaging and made me want to read the second book immediately (even though I’m on my 3rd or 4th reread). I would recommend this book for fans of YA fantasy who want to get into adult fantasy - this book is categorized as adult, but I found it a lot easier to read than other adult fantasies. For me, this book is a reminder that you can recognize the flaws in a book and still enjoy it, so remember to stay critical, even of your favorite books :)

Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (POTC #2) (2006)
Tumblr media
Genre: Action/Adventure/Fantasy
Rating: 10/10
Movie Review:
Here we are, with the second POTC movie. One I clearly haven’t seen in years because there were parts I couldn’t remember. Which makes me glad that I am bingeing through the movies close together so I can see how the storylines sweep together.
The opening image of Elizabeth Swann on the ground, in her wedding dress, in the pouring rain is one of the best openers I have ever seen. It immediately starts the mood of this story. Within that first scene (by the way, Will was HOT AS SHIT in his wedding suit, can we bring that please????), we know everyone’s goals, their drives. We see how they’re willing to fight for each other. It’s showing their love. Will makes a deal, Elizabeth saves herself with a pistol to a man’s head. They are using their “street smarts” from being amongst the pirates to save themselves and each other.
I’ll talk about things in whole, instead of breaking it down like I did with the first movie review. Because at this point, we know everyone-- we know where they stand, what they want, who they love, it’s just more added into the storyline for these characters.
Davy Fucking Jones is so damn terrifying and cool. Let me be frank for a moment: Davy Jones had never been a person in folklore (at least that I have found-- they can’t confirm if it was a real person or someone like Robin Hood who could’ve existed but there’s no proof), so I don’t know why it’s called Davy Jones’s Locker. Who is Davy Jones? The term of the Locker just meant shipwrecks. And then The Flying Dutchman ship was a separate sailing folklore, about a ghost ship people would see before they die, like as an omen. These are real stories, ones even my grandfather knew when he was in the Navy (guys! Whenever they crossed the equator, they would play a game across the ship in honor of Neptune to protect them while sailing-- HOW COOL IS SAILING FOLKLORE???). But I LOOOOOOVE how these screenwriters combined to the two. They seamed the stories so flawlessly that I kind of want the two of them to exist with one another forever now. IT IS PERFECT. Davy Jones’s Locker is the Flying Dutchman, that he “protects” the dead sailors, and that they are still seeing the Flying Dutchman before they die, still as an omen. What a fantastic way to put two stories together. And the twist that Davy Jones is horrible and “evil” because he has no heart. A story as old as time, but hey, it works. It makes SENSE. I remember thinking that stories are all about love, aren’t they? It’s always about love, whether you have it or not. And Bill Nighy does such a wonderful job at this role. If you look up the actor, you would never, ever suspect him being able to play one of the best villains in film history. But this actor does it all with voice and HIS EYES. Look at his eyes, constantly. I found myself staring into his eyes more than at his tentacles. Because Nighy told the story of Davy Jones through his eyes, and my god, he’s a master.
Bootstrap Bill Turner is everything we needed, don’t you agree? We finally get to meet Will’s father! And he’s incredibly heartbreaking. This is a man trapped in this hell, and yet, he’s still willing to protect his son through this world that he knows so well. LOVE. Didn’t I say love is at the heart of these stories? I only wish we had learned more of Will’s mother and family life-- was his father always a pirate? How long had been one? And did Will’s mother know? Because Will sure didn’t. And he went searching for his father. (*wink wink* think of POTC #5 foreshadowing *wink wink*). But seeing their relationship unfold her was incredible. We watched a father meet his adult son, and a son meet his father again as an adult. In some ways, they weren’t exactly Father and Son, they were friends. (I can see this, because my grandfather didn’t meet his father until he was 13, and he says he saw his dad more as a friend than a father). We saw a father have hope after finding love for his son once again (he was no longer stagnant, he had something to fight for), and a son finding more of himself with his father. Another love story.
Tia Dalma is freaking incredible. Her magic, her wisdom (while being vague) creates a new atmosphere that just ADDS to the story. They brought in a new magic system that is similar to voodoo/hoodoo (I think it is supposed to be heavily based off of it), and I adored it. I craved it. She’s one of my mother’s favorites and my oldest friend who’s like my sister said she always remembered Tia Dalma from the movies. She leaves an impression, because she creates something to the stories that is new for us.
Norrington’s return can be expected, but how he returns is rather unexpected. We see a man broken by a decision he made, suffering consequences that he doesn’t like. At the end of POTC #1, we saw a man, a soldier, knowing that maybe the system he’s in isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. But when he decided to set Jack Sparrow and Will Turner free, that system tossed him away. Now, a man so lost in what he should do, not knowing who he should become, he takes advantage and steals (PIRATE!) papers so he can go back to the system he thinks he belongs. He wants to be a Commander again. He wants to be a part of the world he only knows. He’s afraid of change. He doesn’t know what to do.
Honestly, this entire film series is about everyone finding themselves, discovering who they want to be. Facing change in the face and what they will do because of it. Even some of these sides characters.
I forgot how creepy Beckett is. He’s the true villain of the story. He’s a man in power who takes advantage of that power to do things that are despicable and terrible. He’s someone without a heart. Did you catch that? Beckett and Davy Jones are doubles. They are used to show two different sides-- Davy Jones had his heart broken, so he cut out his heart and became heartless. Beckett has his heart, but he’s still heartless. Interesting how the living human is somehow worse than the “creature,” isn’t it? I hate Beckett and don’t want to talk about him anymore. Because I know you all hate him just as much as me. He sucks, he’s vicious, and that’s all we need to know.
Now, to me, this movie, at the core, feels like the first one. But it also feels different. I think it’s because we are more in this world, we understand it more, and it’s not so mysterious. But it’s really dark in the sense that we see the more viciousness of the world (the crow taking out the guy’s eye out at the prison is disgusting, lord).
Jack Sparrow is now the captain of his ship again. But he’s also hiding away from Davy Jones, from the deal he made with the “Devil.” Like I said in the first movie review for this series, we know Jack will do whatever he can to protect himself, and this movie truly shows that. But I think he’s also learning more in this movie-- especially when he sees more of how Davy Jones treats his men. He’s scared, he doesn't know what to do-- much like Norrington. Now, saying this, I thought it was horrible that he willingly tricked Will to leave him in his place aboard the Flying Dutchman. Like, huh? I know Jack Sparrow always has a plan, but this one didn’t feel like that. But it was a learning point for him, I think, and that was the point of this movie for him. He’s making mistakes, he’s learning.
Elizabeth dressing as a boy and reentering this world of pirates is absolutely wonderful. Seeing her in the clothes (after she’s out as herself) and fighting with swords is what I adore about her. She’s easily the one who can transform into what she needs to protect herself, rather adaptable, and she’s doing it find Will and save him. Her entire scene with Norrington, Jack, and Will fighting for the chest is such a great scene. Her yelling at them and then fainting just shows her willingness to try different things. She’s intelligent, that’s for damn sure. She’s trying different tactics to get men’s attention-- knowing and understanding her place as a woman and hilariously using them to her advantage-- even though it doesn’t work. But her sheer strength and will to protect herself and her love shows and breathes more life into her. My only complaint is, Elizabeth, why the hell didn’t you tell Will that the kiss with Jack was a trick? I get why she didn’t, okay, but it didn’t help anyone. Communication is key in a relationship! But it’s fine, I suppose. She’s figuring things out herself.
I must say, Barbossa coming back is WONDERFUL. He’s such a fan favorite I think, and of course they have to bring him back. I will fight anyone who doesn’t want him back. He’s the perfect, hilarious tension with Jack.
I may be forgetting some other comments I wanted to make, but if I am, I will add more as a thread on here. But I think I have mentioned all my main thoughts of this movie. It’s wonderful, it’s a joy, and just a great adventure.
And also, I wanted to add, at the end, this is my favorite part of the whole series, quite honestly. Right when they see the native peoples on the island chasing after Jack when they are trying to escape.
The best.

Just Married exchange is open!
Go read, because there are a lot of really great fanworks. I wrote one, which I think is pretty obvious given what I've recently written for ficathons, see if you can guess which one it is! I received a delightful Black Panther fic: Steady as the Lake, Ever-Changing as the River (3626 words) Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther (2018) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Nakia (Black Panther)/T'Challa Characters: Nakia (Black Panther), T'Challa (Marvel) Additional Tags: Wakandan Wedding, Future Fic, Celebrations, Wedding Fluff, Family Feels Summary: In theory, he was going to have a pleasant chat with Nakia's parents and spend the rest of the day dancing and feasting and sweeping Nakia off her feet to carry her back to the palace for their wedding night.
In theory, there was no need to be nervous.
In theory.
I really love Nakia's family in this story.
Moar recs behind the cut.
With This Demon Artifact, I Thee Wed (2460 words) Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Rupert Giles/Buffy Summers Characters: Buffy Summers, Rupert Giles Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Accidental Marriage
Summary: “There seems to have been a, um, minor translation issue. The binding spell doesn’t just work to safely bind the artifact’s power; it also… well, it also binds those carrying out the ritual to each other.”“Like, ‘til death do us part’ binding? This ancient demon cult tacked on a quickie Vegas wedding clause to their stop-the-apocalypse spell?”
Trust Buffy's instincts, indeed.
We Could Be Anyone (6181 words) Fandom: DCU (Comics), Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Dick Grayson/Jason Todd Characters: Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Kon-El | Conner Kent Additional Tags: Future Fic, Woke Up Married, Character Doesn't know or remember that they're married, Amnesia Makes Person Forget Their Marriage, Ambiguous/Open Ending

Summary: Loki was, as it turned out, pretty far along, as the Jotnar reckoned pregnancies. They carried for fourteen standard months and only really started to show in the last five, and it was those five months, apparently, that Loki was in now.
His Aesir body had hit a point where it was no longer equipped to carry the child, and some unconscious reflex had shifted him to a shape that was more accommodating. Apparently—magically—his two forms usually coexisted somehow, which was how he’d managed to get knocked up in the first place.
“They have similar instances on Earth,” Thor said, almost absently. “Something to do with waves and particles—and they have a breed of undead cat, you know, it’s both alive and dead at the same time. It’s all very interesting, the way things coexist.” He cleared his throat. “What are you going to do?”
I especially like Valkyrie's perspective on Asgard past and present.

She tips back the leather groom’s hat she’s stolen, along with the matching clothes, in order to come through Port Royal to meet him. She can’t help smiling at him - not once can she remember seeing this young man and not wanting to smile at him.
She comes to visit him whenever she can get away from the governor’s mansion, but it’s not enough. She invited him to dinner two weeks ago, and he missed it. He’d apologized, profusely sworn he would never break a promise to her again, and she had shushed his precious flustered flailing with a kiss which left him just as flustered, but at least not flailing.
She strolls across the dirty smithy to meet him. “Are you impressed?” she asks. “I’ve been practicing.”
