the reason buffy summers is a much better protagonist than a lot of the main characters in other teen supernatural shows is that those characters tend to be good people in a passive, boring way. they're generally nice and care about doing good, but they're rarely placed in situations where they have to make difficult decisions with no good outcomes, or pushed to extremes that force them to contend with the ugliest parts of themselves. btvs meanwhile is absolutely obsessed with the idea that passivity is inherently unethical. as such, in order for buffy to be a good person, she constantly has to make active choices. she never gets to be indecisive in the face of a moral dilemma. she always has to choose, to make tough calls, and that makes her genuine heroism and goodness far more compelling than a character who's just kind of passively nice.

it's just - buffy was never afforded any kind of leniency or understanding. not from the school, or the council, or her mother, or her own friends. she just had pressure piling in from every angle and she had to perfect or people would die.

willow’s “Buffy, be happy. We got you out, we really did it”. will grate at me forever I cannot tell you how angry it makes me but also how well written a line it is??

even if we’re taking it at face value and ignoring that buffy was in heaven, say the scoobies really did pull buffy out of hell, this line tells us everything. at this point willow knows buffy has just had to claw her way out of her own grave, is deeply traumatised and disoriented, and from willows perspective has survived being tortured for months. all buffy asks is to go to sleep, and willow can’t even wait until morning to tell her how she should feel. that she should be happy. buffy is allowed absolutely no time to even process what she’s supposedly gone through, let alone what she actually has.

and the cherry on top is that willow has to take the credit. it’s not “Buffy, be happy. You’re safe now.” Or even just “Buffy, be happy. You’re out” It’s buffy be happy, we performed a miracle for you and we got it right, aren’t you grateful? we really did it. can’t you see how amazing it is what we (I) have accomplished?

The Buffy writers room circa 1998: What if we did an episode that tackled rape culture in sports and the lionization of athletes that directly contributes to said culture being both fostered and overlooked and how this interacts with other damaging aspects of the culture around sports and competition such as adults pushing kids too hard to compete and valuing them only for their athletic abilities even if it means wrecking their bodies and exposing them to a culture which turns them into monsters. And also what if it was an homage to Creature From The Black Lagoon.

“buffy ended the show single :)” ok but only because her current love interest just DIED!! (he near quite literally died in her arms! in sacrifice for her!) her last words of the entire series were telling him she loves him and then saying his name in admiration. she isn’t single; she’s a widow.
