the first time you read the goblin emperor is like huh that was interesting and unique. the second time you read the goblin emperor is like ohhh i get who everyone is now. the third time you read the goblin emperor is like i love maia!! and the fourth time you read the goblin emperor is like oh this is a story about grief. chenelo is 16 when she is forced to marry a man who does not want her, and seventeen when she gives birth to a son no one wanted her to have, and twenty four when she dies in a country that is not her home. this is a story about grief. maia is eight when his mother dies, and he spends the rest of his life missing her. this is a story about grief. arbelan tells no one about the child she looses before it is born, who will do nothing for her but who she wishes she could do everything for. this is a story about grief. even when he is safe, every action maia takes is a flinch, a wince, a stiffening of his body, as if he is always preparing to be hit again. this is a story about grief. this is a story about grief. and about choosing to be kind anyways.

I still haven't gotten around to reading the Goblin Emperor but I'm obsessed with how fans talk about it on here they're like NOTHING happens but POLITICS for FOUR HUNDRED PAGES the protagonist is TRAPPED in MACHINES OF POWER and can do NOTHING TO ESCAPE he has NO FREE WILL he also has SOCIAL ANXIETY this is the BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ

okay. so. hear me out. The Goblin Emperor AU where Maia and Setheris are sent somewhere closer to the coast than Edonomee, thus allowing Maia’s illegitimate pirate aunt to check in on her nephew within the first year or so.

At which point an agreement is reached: Setheris won’t tell anyone that Archduke Maia is spending 8-10 months of the year on a pirate ship, and Shaleän won’t kick his ass.

This gets extremely funny when Maia abruptly becomes emperor and no one can figure out why he’s super confident, in great shape, and clearly spends most of his time outdoors. He keeps forgetting that he’s not supposed to thee/thou the servants, or know how to throw a punch, or be bisexual in public.

Reactions to this are mixed! Csevet is having the time of his life. So is Cala. Beshelar is horrified, but in the opposite way that Dazhis is horrified. Idra thinks Maia is the coolest person alive. The Barizheise ambassador (the only person at court besides Csevet who knows why this is happening) is s w e a t i n g.

Csethiro still kind of thinks he’s an idiot at first, but like. A hot, charming idiot who can swordfight. Unfortunately she’s into that.
