"SMILLING CRITTERS ORPHANAGE"
is an AU where the smiling critters take a more anthro form and work on an orphanage inspired by "The Promised Neverland" 1 arc.
KEEP IN MIND SOME THINGS MAY CHANGE AFTER CHAPTER 3 RELEASE!
I do not have a written plot but I have some info about the AU!
- Their symbols are acessories given by CatNap, but they aren't simple acessories! They sometimes can let out a smoke that makes them go hysterical and violent. They also can shine and change colors (Shine when they are having huge fellings, lose color when they feel empty, and shine a red light when they are going hysterical)
- The Orphanage is owned by DogDay Family, and currently owned by DogDay himself, but everyone knows that CatNap is the one in charge.
- DogDay family was very angst CatNap work on the orphanage, DogDay lied that CatNap was fired bc of it.
- There is other workers on the Orphanage, but the smilling critters one are the people who takes part of the dark part of the orphanage where experiments happen.

the Nerima Wrecker Crews' Guide to Ranma Fandom for Newcomers
With the release this month of a brand new anime adaptation of the eighties manga Ranma ½, a lot of new fans are joining an older fandom that may leave them...confused about some details.
See, when the Ranma manga began in 1987, series creator Rumiko Takahashi was already solidly-established from her success with the runaway hit Urusei Yatsura. It only took two years for an anime adaptation to begin airing....for a mere eighteen episodes, before being canceled. If you go back to the '89 anime, you will almost certainly notice some drastic shifts in art style and tone from the first eighteen episodes to the remainder, and that's because only a single season was produced by Studio DEEN before production shifted to a new directorial crew, who dubbed the following season Ranma ½ Nettōhen (Fierce/Hot Battle Chapter).
The thing is, between the original eighteen episodes being made while the manga was still relatively early in its nine-year run, attempts to draw in better ratings by heavily promoting fan-favorite characters, a need for filler episodes to let the manga catch up to the pace of the anime's releases, and even the biases and friendships of the respective directors and writers...some things wound up being different.
And as a result, the Ranma ½ of the Eighties and Nineties is very different from what we're going to get with the 2024 anime. The 2024 series is based on a manga that had been finished for decades, and between the official releases so far and some unfortunate early leaks, it shows plenty of signs of being far more faithful to the original manga.
So, we of the Nerima Wreckers' Crew are here to introduce you to a few of the things you might run into as a new Ranma ½ fan exploring the existing fan content that has accrued over the past few decades!
Be aware: you're about to read spoilers for a four decades old manga. Questions about something that we don't cover in this post? Leave a comment asking for more, after the jump!
Something to get out of the way first: we're the NWC as an in-joke: as both Transformers and Ranma fans (and in some cases, fictive introjects), we wanted to combine the 'Wreckers' group name from Transformers with the English-language Ranma ½ fandom's nickname for the group of martial artists, students, teachers, monsters, and other characters who populate the series:
The Nerima Wrecking Crew.
The principal setting of Ranma ½ is Nerima, a ward of the metropolis of Tokyo. There are 23 special wards, and Nerima is a real-life one that is found in the northwest of Tokyo—in fact, it was the 23rd and final ward! In English-language communications, the local government identifies the ward as Nerima City, so that's how we'll speak of it here.
Nerima is a large city that still retains a very suburban, even exurban character stretching back to its history of farming. There are even still farms within the city limits, including at least one dairy farm last we checked! It's part of Tokyo, but it has a kid of old-fashioned peaceful character...that makes it the perfect place for anime characters to disrupt. That kind of disruption led the English-speaking fandom to dub our favorite crew of violent martial artists the "Wrecking Crew", presumably after their propensity to bust down walls and buildings.
A lot of anime and manga take place in Nerima. Takahashi's previous hit series Urusei Yatsura, the cat-robot classic All-Purpose Cultural Cat-Girl Nuku-Nuku, the anime adaptation of Stop!! Hibari-Kun, even Tokyo Ghoul...okay, some of these are not quite the same genre as the others.
This is often attributed to the large number of anime studios based in the city, but Ranma's adventures in Nerima have a special bond with the environment that seems to go beyond, stretching back to the original manga. Ranma is often seen walking along (or falling from) fencetops above canals just like the above image from Wikimedia, and scenes set in nearby parks map fairly well to specific ones in Nerima City, so we can generally assume that the neighborhood where the Tendō Dojo is found is roughly in the Ōizumi area along the Shirako River seen above.
More specifically, it's in an imaginary neighborhood somewhere nebulously within those boundaries, a neighborhood that parts of the older fandom know as Furinkan-chō, AKA "Furinkan Town", after the Furinkan High School that Ranma and Akane attend—drawing a connection to the more official identification of the cast of Urusei Yatsura as living in Tomobiki-chō and attending Tomobiki High School.
A sober, dignified edifice to education...populated by a bunch of martial arts lunatics.
Some of whom are probably going to be pretty different in the new anime!
Meet the principal of Furinkan High School. Yes, this is a native Japanese man. Yes, he has problems.
Principal, Headmaster, or in Japanese Kunō-kōchō (no given name provided) is, unfortunately, the unfortunate father of the equally unfortunate series mainstay Tatewaki Kunō. The Principal here visited the USA for a while in order to learn from our education methods and came back an even worse problem than he'd left, becoming obsessed with the trappings of Hawai'ian tourism and the English language. In the original Japanese, his dialogue is heavily peppered with random English words and phrases (and an obnoxious Woody Woodpecker-style laugh).
The thing is, it's hard to translate a character randomly speaking English...into English. So, the official English translations of the original manga and anime had the Principal badly pepper his speech with Hawai'ian Pidgin phrases. It's going to be a little while before he shows up in the new anime, so it's hard to say for sure how he'll be translated...but it probably won't be that. So, new fans: you're probably going to encounter a few fanworks where there's a random fake-Hawai'ian man threatening teenagers with bad haircuts.
Teenagers like Hikaru Gosunkugi.
This is Gosunkugi. You'll probably see him next season, because we're going to perform acts of supervillainy if they don't make a second season. He shows up pretty early on in the manga, and has an important role to play in a major storyline...but he didn't show up in the original anime for 94 episodes after he was supposed to appear.
What we got instead was Sasuke Sarugakure. There's some debate about exactly why the anime-only character Sasuke was added: a diminutive ninja with thick eyebrows, prominent whiskers, buck teeth, and a miserable lot in life as the Kunō family servant. Seemingly...the only servant. Sasuke's role in the original anime seemed to have been not only to fill in for Gosunkugi in an early storyline, but to act as a comedic foil to the overblown antics of the Kunō family—especially absurd since the anime took the already comical wealth of the Kunōs from the manga, and exaggerated it to an absurd degree that seems all the more ridiculous when you learn that Sasuke sleeps in the crawlspace and gets by on fewer than three meals a day.
Oddly, this characterization as a comically impoverished ninja is a recurring bit in Takahashi's stories: Urusei Yatsura featured the job-hunting missing-nin Kaede, and the last few volumes of the Ranma ½ manga introduced the threadbare kunoichi Konatsu.
Get used to this image. It's probably all you're going to see of Konatsu for a good few seasons...because the original anime never got to that part of the manga.
Konatsu is a thorny topic in the fandom due to matters of gender that aren't helped by the original anime never getting to those stories, and the original manga chapters taking forever to be available in English. What can definitely be said is that Konatsu A: identifies as a kunoichi, specifically a title for female ninja, and B: is AMAB.
But this is a series that's all about playing with gender.
For example...
The Girl. An anime-only episode of Nettōhen presented a story of Ranma taking a blow to the head, waking up not long after and insisting on actually being a girl—identifying her life as a boy as being something akin to a bad dream. This version of Ranma knows she was assigned male and turns back into a male body when splashed with hot water, but she demonstrates a visceral dysphoria about it that is painfully relatable. The episode's plot is concluded and the status quo is restored when the pacifistic girl is struck once more in the head at the end, restoring the Ranma who is a confident martial artist and self-identified man among men...but an increasing number of highly-rated fanworks reference this single-episode anime-only story.
This isn't the only time an anime-only episode touches on the idea of Ranma who is solely identified as a girl:
Ranma and the Evil Within starts off with Ranma joking about staying a girl forever, only for it to be taken seriously by the recurring problematic antagonist Happōsai (seriously, he's just the worst, and for some reason the original anime production team decided to make lots of anime-only episodes featuring him). A magic incense is brought into play, splitting off all the femnine 'yin' from Ranma's masculine 'yang'.
This split-off half is characterized as unbalanced, magically powerful, and a threat to Ranma's life. So of course, she looks sick as fuck. But just like The Girl, she's a one-off character. Don't worry: if the anime runs long enough to cover all the manga storylines, we'll still get a story about a female-only duplicate of Ranma. But it's going to be a little while.
Speaking of girls in Ranma ½, let's touch on Akane's female friends!
Mostly going unnamed in the manga, Akane has several female classmates and friends who received more prominent roles in the old anime.
(gif by @roseillith)
The two most notable of these are Yuka (lighter brown hair), and Sayuri (darker brown, often in a ponytail). These names do get called out in the old version of the anime, though they don't seem to have much personality beyond "girls who are friends with each other and Akane".
This role is sometimes filled by others in the old anime. It's much harder to find episodes where any other girls in the class are named, but due to two of them recurring, fanworks often bring them up as Akane's other friends:
Meet Asami (wavy shoulder-length hair) and Hiroko (short hair and freckles)...or is that Makoto and Shikako? Sources vary on these names, and English language websites disagree on which are the 'official' names. If anyone can track down an episode where either one is named on-screen, we'd appreciate it!
Akane isn't the only one with school friends: Ranma's got a few recurring acquaintances among the male students, as well.
In the old anime, these two are specifically named as Hiroshi (lighter colored hair and wider eyes) and Daisuke (dark hair and narrow eyes). They're often treated by both the source material and fanworks as Ranma's sole "normal" guy friends, and in general behave like stereotypical high school boys...including openly lusting after Ranma's girl form, even after they learn that she and the male Ranma are one and the same.
Hiroshi and Daisuke show up more consistently as a pair than Akane's friends in both the manga and the original anime, and fanworks often pair them romantically with Yuka and Sayuri. But even with how common Hiroshi, Daisuke, Yuka, and Sayuri are (down to their incredibly average names), they deserve mentioning for new fans...
...Because the new anime renamed them all! "Hiroshi" is now "Shingo" (しんご), "Daisuke" is now "Kiichi" (きいち), "Yuka" is now "Noriko" (のりこ), and "Sayuri" is now "Tomoyo" (ともよ).
That's it for now, because there's a brand new episode out that we haven't had a chance to watch while we wrap up this post on our lunch break. Until next time, this is the Nerima Wrecker Crew, signing off!

"everyone in mapleshade's vengeance (minus the kits and whatever other exceptions whatever person making this point opts to include) is a bad person" is a take that does indeed work to establish that yes, this is a story piloted by every party with any agency acting out of cruelty and hurting others, and is also an attempt at gesturing towards nuance (or at least, thinking outside of black and white morality. it is in itself a kinda inherently un-nuanced take) within the idea of good vs evil in the story. however where i believe the issue with the phrase lies is in the assertion that the reason why these characters are enacting violence on each other is because of some unique inherent nastiness they were born with or that were predisposed into their character writing rather than addressing that their flaws (while still horrible) are specifically systemically driven.
before she kills ravenwing, mapleshade commits no crime that is worth the persecution she faces, and her mistakes are in fear of facing what she inevitably does. she does not obfuscate information about her childrens' parentage or take them into that river out of malice or uncaring, she does it because she lives in a society that will exile her children in a storm once it finds out that they are illegitimate, and see that she leaves. the birchface thing likely exacerbated her punishment, sure, but she still had no safety net. if it could happen under that circumstance it could happen under any, and that is the tragedy of it. (the bridge-she-couldve-crossed thing is clearly not something the authors remembered or considered so is kind of textually irrelevant)
likewise, frecklewish does not display some unique inherent xenophobia to herself that we don't also see across the timeline from dotc to present, that even characters the writers intend as sympathetic like crowfeather and gray wing will display. this doesn't whatsoever absolve her of culpability, cruelty is cruelty regardless of the source, but it isn't her that is the source of her own hatred, it is the clan system, and her own grief that is amplifying it. "frecklewish wasn't sent to the dark forest for the river thing, it was because she yelled at the kids" is a funny take because yeah to us the readers her violent outburst is clearly her "wrong", but in-universe i really don't think starclan would care LMAO.
now, as with a lot of things in warrior cats that are deeper than the text on page i''m not sure the erins are necessarily consciously Trying to write the clan system as an inherently cruel, violent, and bigoted system- they might very well be throwing in antagonistic characters with the intent that their prejudices and toxic patriotism just form naturally and randomly like mutuations- but as i've said before i do find an interesting parallel between the series' necessity to maintain its status quo and flow of conflict for sake of marketability and series continuation, and the fact that the world in-universe has a code with xenophobia baked into its laws and consistently writes conflicts about the cruelty of the warrior code without ever being able to take steps to major to address and remedy the flaws that lead to this conflict lest it Paint The Clans As The Bad Guys or force them to step too far away from their tried and true formula, so the cycle continues. i think that's the tragedy of mapleshade's vengeance to me- it's a story that occurs because of some pointless interclan war about rocks or whatever else and everything that occurs to mapleshade is done to her by cogs and/or perpatrators of this machine that values compliance and order and clan isolationism. she's a minorly selfish and oblivious person, she isn't born evil. the people that hurt her aren't conniving supervillains, they're just people with the capacity for cruelty given the motivation and the chance. and that's worse, in a way, because they come out on the right side of history and like a dozen generations later squirrelflight and leafpool are going to get put on a trial to go to hell for the same crime that got her exiled, because the system is fucked and the system hasn't changed.

What would the m6 bring to show and tell? Could be as adults or as kids :)
The Arcana Mini-HCs: What M6 bring to show and tell
Julian: leeches, obviously, and then he'd want to demonstrate how well they work on himself. might faint because his poor habits make him borderline anemic at times
Asra: terrorizes the class by bringing glitter powder, ostensibly to make their water magic easier to follow but really to leave an artistic rendition of Faust on the ceiling
Nadia: one of the gadgets she's invented - more specifically, one of the puzzles she built for Chandra. oh, and Chandra, so they both get a chance to show off a little bit
Muriel: didn't want to come and be Perceived, so he brought one of his tapestries to hide behind while he's holding it up. ends up giving an impromptu cultural history lesson
Portia: she brings Pepi, but she wanted Pepi to behave so she made cat biscuits, which led to making people biscuits, which led to making jam - she's balancing five baskets
Lucio: his dogs! and his arm! and his sword - too violent? okay yeah he'll put it away. he didn't bring anything else (he forgot what today was) but he can tell lots of stories!

How much do the littles know of their fathers' violent history and does that influence how they feel about them? Like does Ryuu-chan ever worry that Atsushi doesn't like him as much as Acchan because he and Akutagawa used to beat the unholy hell out of each other? (I'm in the mood for angst lol sorry!)
The kids both know that Akutagawa is (formerly) Port Mafia, since Chuuya-oji keeps bothering him to come back and work for him again, but they're not really aware of how violent Atsushi and Akutagawa were toward each other at first. It's not something they'd hide from the kids if they asked, but it's never really come up.
Ryuu-chan is definitely the more observant of the pair at this point (Acchan's Cat Brain wins more often than not, he'll grow out of that. Someday. Atsushi desperately hopes) and definitely knows a little more than Acchan. He will ask questions of the other ADA members, some of whom may be less circumspect, but he doesn't doubt at all that Atsushi loves him fiercely and will do anything to protect him.
Acchan, bless his little tiger heart, hasn't ever had the thought cross his mind. He just knows what he can get away with in regards to one dad over the other, not that either love him any more or less.

Someone I think about a lot is Lionblaze. Not necessarily because he did a lot, or was an exceptionally good character (in his own point of view, at least), but rather because of the POSSIBILITY that could've been met with him. He had so much potential, and I think about that a lot.
He's an arrogant little boy whose grandfather & half-uncle who are both notorious for their crimes, but ALSO for their strength. They want to train Lionpaw and see what Lionpaw wishes everyone else would- That he's the son of the clan deputy and he's just as strong as his kin! He has greatness in his blood, he's Firestar's grandson and also Tigerstar's.
He must battle with all that, wouldn't he? He must feel bad for being violent and training with Tigerstar and Hawkfrost, but its really all he grows to know.
When the rest of the clan treats him like a little kid, like Ashfur, it wouldn't be a shock to see him turn to some cats who seem to treat him as more than a little kid.
Think about how cool it could've been if his morals began to crumble because he was becoming strong with his kin. Slowly he would stop feeling bad. It would just feel natural. Berrypaw's teasing wouldn't mean too much, when Lionpaw was being trained by some of the strongest cats in clan history, would it?
And when Heatherpaw comes along, just think about how differently things could've went down if it was not only Hollypaw who found out, but Tigerstar. Maybe by then Lionpaw would've been too far gone. Maybe Heatherpaw would've been meant to stay in the tunnels she had found.
Lionpaw can't be defeated, maybe he thinks he's just strong. Heatherpaw might've struggled, but in the end he left without a scratch, hadn't he?
He could grapple with the guilt. The looks from cats would always feel like they knew something. Slowly he'd learn about the prophecy, and realize that Tigerstar and Hawkfrost didn't define him anymore.
Think of the arc he could've had. He could've done bad things & lived his life in remorse, giving his ALL to defend the clans in the final battle, to make up for the wrongs and to avenge the childhood he and others after him were robbed of. Think of how he'd feel when he watches Hollyleaf spiral into the same shell of guilt he did. Think of how much worse he'd feel when he couldn't save her.
I do like him in the Broken Code, though. I think he's much colder than we've ever seen him and that is so much cooler than the cardboard cutout of a character we were reading about for so long.
Morally challenged Lionblaze for the win!!!!

Poster for the unproduced 1984 live-action horror adaptation GARFIELD: FIRST BLOOD.
Following the success of CUJO in 1983, studios were scrambling to find the next hit “killer pet” flick. Notorious grindhouse auteur Ron Sharleton, seeking a big-budget movie deal to fund his struggling production of CANNIBAL QUARTERBACK 2, set his sights on the most unlikely of properties: Jim Davis’ beloved comic strip Garfield. Sharleton, a self-proclaimed fan of Garfield who called the strip “a subversive celebration of misanthropy,” believed an “alternative, adult” spin on the character could thrive in tandem with its kid-friendly cartoons. Describing his rationale in an interview later, Sharleton said: “You have all of these R-rated films that come out and become big hits and the studios want to suck every penny out of one idea, so they sanitize it and repackage it as a cartoon for kids. So I said, why can’t we do the reverse?”
GARFIELD: FIRST BLOOD was pitched as a dark, gritty reimagining in which the titular cat, pushed to the brink on a particularly bad Monday, finally snaps and kills Jon’s dimwitted dog Odie. As he tastes Odie’s blood, Garfield is overcome by how good it felt to put a permanent end to something that annoyed him. He then realizes that everything and everyone annoy him, and his murderous rampage begins.
Describing his take on the character, Sharleton said: “Garfield never really sat right with me as a children’s character. He’s so much darker, more complex. You have this cat who is filled with contempt; he looks at the world around him with radical skepticism and scowls at the prison of tedium mankind calls ‘society,’ and he responds with this very self-indulgent nihilism: Be lazy, be a glutton, don’t participate in anything because it’s all bullshit. Garfield looks at Jon waking up early on a Monday and putting on his tie to go to a job he hates, and he sees a pathetic fool. It’s all such a powerful rejection of the Reagan Wall Street capitalist disease that has poisoned the 80s. ‘Work hard, climb the ladder, buy a boat!’ Garfield says fuck that, stay home, eat lasagna, accept no master. But living as an iconoclast in a conformist world has filled him with all this tension. There’s anger in there, you know? So I wanted to examine what would happen if Garfield was finally pushed over the edge. Where’s the line between a passive nihilist and a violent anarchist?”
Warner Bros execs were intrigued by Sharleton’s pitch (and the lucrative cash cow of the Garfield brand) and funded a short “proof-of-concept” trailer, directed by Sharleton, to convince Garfield creator Jim Davis of the idea. The trailer reportedly went “all-in” on Sharleton’s signature “splattercore” horror, including a scene where Garfield grinds up Liz Wilson alive in a meat grinder and bakes her flesh into a lasagna he then serves to Jon. The presentation to Davis was described as “one of the most disastrously miscalculated meetings in modern Hollywood,” with Davis stopping the trailer midway to ask the room “are you people completely fucking insane?” before storming out.
Reflecting on the meeting years later, an anonymous former Warner exec said “we knew it was a long shot, but we really felt like the only way to sell the concept was to push it as far as possible. In retrospect I think yeah, we did let it go too far. We were so absorbed in it that we didn’t realize how jarring it would be for a guy like Jim Davis to just be thrown into this cold. I think it was a mistake to open with the Nermal blender scene, but we wanted shock, and we thought… I don’t know, everyone was doing a LOT of cocaine back then. Well, everyone except Jim Davis."

The Medics of the Clans
I’m planning a rewrite of warrior cats so I’m messing around with how they work, nothing too out there but I like what I got going on.
Ok so somethings I’ve changed is the hole thing of you are an apprentice until your mentor dies, that’s silly and I’ll get to that in a minute.
The second thing I changed is the name, medicine cat as it’s an appropriation of North American indigenous cultures.
A lot of people have changed the name to Healer but personally I don’t like it, nothing against I just don’t care for it. So I’ve changed it to Medic because so much of warrior cats is fighting and battles, it makes sense to me it wound keep with that theme.
Different titles
I’ve gone and made little “titles” for different types of medics. These are the most common titles.
First is Medic Apprentice could also be known as the Medic’s apprentice or Medic in training, it’s exactly what it sounds like, a cat that is learning how to be a Medic.
The Second Medic is a fully trained medic who, most of the time is the youngest fully trained medic, it’s custom for there to be at least two Medics in the clan, the second is to listen and help the head medic
The Head Medic is the one who is in charge of the medicine den and everything that is going on, in and around it. The Head Medic takes on the role when the previous Head Medic retires or dies.
Senior Medic the oldest, most senior medic in the clan. Is normally retired but not always.
A chart of Leafpool’s history as a Medic, going from bottom to top, just to give you an idea of how this kinda works.
A Disgraced medic is a cat that broken the code severely and has been stripped of the medic title (even when that code is severely unfair).
Field Medic are warriors that have basic training in medicine and healing, they are normally sent on battle patrols or patrols that have the possibility to turn violent.
Hollyleaf and Brightheart are examples of Field Medics!
Also important to remember that Senior medic does not always mean their the head medic!
Example of this is while Goosefeather was the senior medic of Thunderclan, he was retired and Featherwhisker was the Head Medic who was in full control of the Thunderclan medic den.
History of Medics
Ok this is very much a work in progress/ has ver little done and I’ll definitely be revisiting this later with a more in detail post, BUT, until then this is what I got so far-
I dont like a lot of stuff in moth flight’s vision, so much of it dose not make sense like, why would you split up your young kids when you didn’t have to? Why did any of the other medicine cats agree to such a dumb rule proposed by a very young, new to this job cat?? Wtf is going on here??
I really like the direction bonefall’s going with their rewrite of moth flight, it makes sooo much more sense to have the kits be older and have training in medicine and that’s why they were split up. I still don’t know how I’m going to tackle moth flight’s vision tho, but moth flight will definitely have a lot of Importance in the clan’s history.
Such as below! After a cat finishes their Medic training they receive a Luna moth wing.
I will be doing a post on Starclan so hopefully she’ll show up there.
The Medic role will be invented in dotc.
The no mate no children role may not be invented until later in the timeline?? Maybe??
At the end of oots/avos the clans are going to get a bit of a soft reboot and the no mate no children rule is going to fuck off, much to the dismay of a handful cats who think the code is a vital part of clan life
Which brings us to the broken code where shit is hitting the fan but that’s for another post
Like I said it’s really a work in progress but I’ll put a link down here when I post more stuff about it!

The Warrior Cats Phenomenon
A beloved xenofiction series that is, in reality, incredibly mediocre, is subsequently glamorized and over-inflated by the perception of adolescents, influenced by the cultural landscape at the time of the fandom's mainstream conception. The era of the early 2000s brought about the popularization of the internet, and with it came a new sub-division in alt. youth pop culture; which for the sake of this tangent I will refer to as "Alternative animal expressionism." In less formal terms, just about all the artsy kids on deviantart had a fursona that walked on four legs and was adorned with an abundance of accessories and bright colors, as well as punk/emo-resembling hair styles. This is reflective of the commonplace visual aesthetics we now refer to as MySpace/MyScene subculture. MySpace was designed as a platform for older teenagers and young adults, and just so happened to collide with the rise of Youtube, and with it came two other communities that were skyrocketing in popularity; AMVs and furries. The history of furries is too long to elaborate on here, however many of them were pioneers in developing crucial components of code still used in modern operating systems. What defines a "Furry" is debated, but mostly revolves around an enjoyment of anthropomorphized animals. arguably one of if not the most popular forms of media depicting animals with such characteristics at the time was Walt Disney's The Lion King, and the growing number of forum websites meant that multiple forums and websites were bound to surface that were entirely dedicated to The Lion King and its fans, serving as a dedicated space to discuss the film, and potentially their own fan-made characters. AMV is an incredibly broad and potentially outdated term. The Acronym "AMV" was first coined as "Anime music video." Although for reasons I will touch on a bit later it can also mean "Animated music video." Again, with the notoriety of forum websites and online fan spaces, information can much more easily be found, given, and spread. Anime was still a relatively new concept in the world of Western entertainment (and was first popularized by, you guessed it, Furries.), and until files and videos could easily be shared over the internet, the only way to watch Anime was to get your hands on a physical VHS tape, which at the time still proved to be difficult and an incredibly niche practice, especially if you wanted subtitled or dubbed Anime.
Now in the 2000's, the popularity of Anime has increased almost tenfold. And while animation is a media that can be easily translated is necessary and enjoyed by a Western Audience, Japanese music did not quite reach the same level of popularity, at least not alongside Anime. Western audiences often combined clips of various Anime TV shows and films to music, most of which was Western-made. The intent, editing style, and end result of each fan-made music video often differed greatly from each other, although a common idea was evidently present: The music landscape at the time, brought on by the newest wave of counter culture, could be relatable to the situations of the animated characters. (This was not a completely new concept, and full disclosure I do not know how people made fan made music videos before computer video editing software was invented. According to Wikipedia, "The first AMV was created in 1982 by 21-year-old Jim Kaposztas. [He] hooked up two videocassette recorders to each other and edited the most violent scenes from Star Blazers to "All You Need Is Love" by the Beatles to produce a humorous effect.") These were also sometimes referred to as "Anime mixes", particularly if they contained footage from more than one property. Similar media also included MMVs ("Manga music videos"), FMVs (literally "Fan Music Videos") and HMVs (which were obviously created for a more adult audience).
The oldest AMV on Youtube (at least that I could find) After some time, the appeal of creating a fan-made music video spread to other fandoms (again through social cross-pollination, i.e. someone who was a fan of both Anime and The Lion King was more likely to adopt these mediums), particularly The Lion King, and fan made music videos using footage from the film and its sequels began to surface, although still using the "AMV" Moniker. The next logical step for anyone who enjoyed Western mainstream animation was to include other Disney properties in fan-made music videos. But why stop at mainstream? Why stop at films? the medium soon evolved to contain and pay tribute to all kinds of Western animation, from Walt Disney to cult classics such as the likes of Watership Down, to TV shows like Avatar The Last Airbender (the latter of which was often understandably grouped in with Anime and AMVs). In 2003, a group of authors underneath the pseudonym Erin Hunter released the first book in what would become one of the most popular and most beloved xenofiction book series of all time. Warriors: Into the Wild. Like most budding fandoms, Warrior Cats also sprouted dedicated fan websites for discussion of the series. The up-and-coming Warrior Cats fandom found itself somewhere on the spectrum between the anime and furry communities, combining the ingenuity and creative thinking with the"Sparkledog" furry art style. However, the more "visual" creative types lacked almost any pre-existing media to work with, and before 2009, fan-made music videos often consisted of picture slideshows with simple or non-existent effects and transitions, with some scattered fan-made animations here and there. And then, everything changed when a small team of artists and animators driven purely by devotion, passion, and seemingly sheer creative will, released the first episode of their new Anime-inspired, episodic retelling of the first Warriors book. SSSWarriorCats was so Anime-inspired, both in animation style, direction and pacing, perfectly straddling the balance between the Anime and furry communities, respectfully. The series, although technically incomplete, still garners an enormous fanbase to this day. Evidently Warrior Cats fans have been inspired by these animations for over a decade, and it's not hard to see why. And thus the release and subsequent releases of episodes sparked what is regarded as the “Classic” period in Warrior Cats fan animations, and also sparked the creation of “MAPs” (“Multi-Animator-Projects”), as opportunities to collaborate with fellow artists. To summarize, Warrior Cats had the ingenuity of Anime fans to create music videos out of already-existing content, but upon realizing they had none, looked to the furry, tactile-based artistic side of their fandom’s conception to create it, instead of waiting for an official adaptation to surface. (And considering what Tencent animation is doing… I’m glad they did.) In other, perhaps more unserious terminology, the Warrior Cats fandom is the cultural brainchild of the Anime and Furry communities. To summarize, Warrior Cats had the ingenuity of Anime fans to create music videos out of already-existing content, but upon realizing they had none, looked to the furry, tactile-based artistic side of their fandom’s conception to create it, instead of waiting for an official adaptation to surface. In other, perhaps more unserious terminology, the Warrior Cats fandom is the cultural brainchild of the Anime and Furry communities. The Warrior Cats Fandom continues to persist, even after two decades, seemingly out of sheer artistic will. But, of course, the question remains as to why all of this happened, why does the possibility for these ideas to occur exist in the first place? The answer is simple, The perception of adolescents that such amalgamated fan-made media can be perceived as "mature" or even "edgy" is not one that has disappeared from our culture and probably never will. Cringe culture is dead.
#I'm supposed to be writing about how 'The Boxtrolls' is a digestible allegory for scapegoating and genocide.#BTW most of this is speculation#this is just me rambling about how the fandom only exists because it just so happened to co-exist-#-alongside other internet-defining communities.#dont treat this as a history book cuz the history of the internet is nearly impossible to document in full#blathering#crowfish crap#warrior cats#waca#wc#warriors#warriors erin hunter#erin hunter warriors#warriorcats#xenofiction#tlk#the lion king#amv#internet history#furry community#furry history#fandom history#fandom#favorites#wheeee!#tumblr please work with me here#thanks for coming to my ted talk#I almost exceeded the amount of characters I can put in a post so the ending is a tad bit rushed

OC Interview (Tag Game)
tagged by: the lovely @kaylinalexanderbooks thank you!
tagging: Open Tag and soft tagging @ceph-the-ghost-writer | @mk-writes-stuff | @lawful-evil-novelist | and @rose-bookblood
I'll do Prince Kaye from FSF for this, since I'm trying to flesh his character out more and get to know him better.
Prince Kaye
1. Are you named after anyone?
No, I but my name is dirived from the Eltyan word "Kahn" which means warrior... I don't like to think about it :|
2. When was the last time you cried?
A few days ago, I think, when mother was voicing her disappointment in me and praising my siblings
3. Do you have kids?
No, I'm too young for that. Maybe one day though, if I can be better than my parents. I'm honestly too scared to really consider the possibility, however.
4. Do you use sarcasm?
No, I'm not much of a sarcasm person
5. What's the first thing you notice about people?
How they smile and what makes them smile, it says a lot about the kind of person they are
6. What's your eye color?
Dark brown, I get them from my mother
7. Scary movies stories or happy endings?
No scary stories, ever please. I would like just happy stories please and thank you.
8. Any special talents?
I…I'm not…I'm not special. I'm pretty decent at reading and drawing, but I mostly just keep to myself. Not a lot for a scary non violent person to do in a kingdom that's built around being a military
9. Where were you born?
In the castle
10. What are your hobbies?
I like to read, and I like my books, i like being out in nature if it's safe, i like drawing but I'm not very good.
11. Do you have any pets?
No, but I would really like to have a cat
12. What sports do you play/have played?
... I don't really... do sports or that sort of thing...
13. How tall are you?
I'm 5'4''... I'm kind of small, especially for my family. I was kind of the runt of the group, heh...
14. Favorite subject in school?
Probably history, but not about Dinvirty, there's too much violence there for my liking. I also like studying the ancients and the gods and their stories as well
15. Dream job?
I'd like to do something that helps people, keeps them safe. No violence or dangerous stuff involved for me though...

I had my final Non Violent Crisis Intervention training for this year, which is good because I use it all the damn time. I have one sweet child who gets into fights so easily. His brain switches off and fear takes over and all he can do is kick. He can’t talk, doesn’t hear. All I can do is block him long enough for adults to remove the other person in the altercation and then give him time. I make soothing noises at him, that it will be ok, that I’m here with him, but honestly it’s just soothing noises at that point. I do sometimes have to touch him when blocking so that no one gets hurt, and any touch will escalate him further, so I really try not to do that but obviously I can’t let him hurt anyone. It takes him a long time to recover. I don’t know what trauma is in his history to put him so close to the edge of fear, but I ache for him. He’s a smart, honest, loving, empathetic person.
In class the honeymoon phase is well over, and the two week “we’re going to try your every last nerve” phase is also over so now we’re in the standard” zone until Thanksgiving probably. My co teacher and I have built relationships with most of the kids and that sets us up for a more successful classroom. Still takes a lot of practice and patience. They are 10, after all, and there’s 23 of them.
In other news, our loan has been preliminarily approved for the kitchen remodel, so I hope we can get on the schedule soon. Every time I open our non-existent pantry I get a little irritated. I am looking forward to a more functional space.
Also, having ten cats means I am constantly petting and kissing some small, furry, warm creature and I can’t tell you how helpful that is. Pete in particular has a habit of flopping down next to me, his muscular bulk is very comforting. My sweet kitties.

v3 scar headcanons
pondering the orb that is the v3 cast and scars. this is obviously going to be triggering though for a multitude of reasons so i’m gonna slap a big ol abuse/self harm/torture trigger warning on here and then drop everything below the cut. proceed with an abundance of caution :3
shuichi saihara i’m probably far from the only person who headcanons shuichi as having had a history of self harm. i think a lot of people really reduce and water down shuichi’s character to “guy with anxiety and depression” but it’s a very longstanding and personal headcanon to me. i think he has largely gotten over it by the time he attends hope’s peak, but still has the occasional relapse. scars mostly on the inner thigh and wrists.
hoshi ryoma ryoma, i don’t believe has much of a history of personal injury (and injuries he likely got in tennis mostly didn’t leave any scars) but i think he has old scars from cat scratches and bites over the years. also some nicks across his arms and abdomen from various scuffs in prison, mostly onesided; ryoma’s not the kind of guy who fights back, not really.
gonta gokuhara this dude grew up in the woods so you know he’s got all kinds of gnarly scars on his torso and legs. claw marks, bite marks, maybe something on his head from a particularly sharp rock. they’re his reminders of his time growing up with his forest family and i think while gonta doesn’t necessarily experience much of a feeling of “pride” around them, he isn’t ashamed of them either.
kiibo robot. skip
korekiyo shinguuji korekiyo is an abuse victim. i am reasonably confident about this stance. i think on the whole the abuse that korekiyo faced from his sister was psychological or coercive, mostly because his sister was bedridden, but i could see him having a scar or two from that time. what really would’ve stuck with this dude physically is his wack ass backstory-- this guy has undergone some crazy shit for his research, including torture which i won’t get into for obvious reasons, but like. yeah that’s gonna leave a mark. i also am of the opinion that the bandages on his arms cover scars that he created himself, not as a form of self harm but rather for like, blood sacrifice for rituals and stuff? but i did indeed borrow that hc from my brother soo.
kaito momota i think kaito has scars all over his knuckles from splitting them during fights. i don’t think he’s the violent hard hitter the fandom characterises him as, but i do think kaito struggles to articulate his anger, and that can turn into lashing out. especially if someone is being unreasonable or cruel to someone he cares about. so, scars on his knuckles. he might have other scars from similar fights, but kaito strikes me as the kind of guy to go in fists blazing, he definitely doesn’t fight with weapons if he can avoid it. the only other notable scar i hc him as having is a thin scar on his temple from the car crash that killed his parents when he was eight.
kokichi ouma so i’m actually one of the few people who doesn’t necessarily hc that kokichi grew up in an orphanage, i like the hc and i do use it from time to time but i read kokichi as a foster care kid. going from houses where he either had to bodily escape punishment or cause trouble just to get a bit of attention. dice being other members of the system/kids who were also as forgotten and unloved. all this to say i do find it extremely plausible that kokichi could’ve had some extent of physical abuse in his past from particularly rough homes-- and as such has some scars from that time. other scars he received through Shenanigans.
rantaro amami rantaro travels a lot, and talks about all his wack ass adventures and near-death experiences-- not to mention that it is canon in utdp that he will sometimes return home with a concealed injury. as such i think rantaro is pretty scarred up like gonta, primarily around the torso/abdomen area, but he has a few assorted scars on his legs, and a bunch of marks on his hands. my friend jim and i share the hc that he has scars that encircle both of his wrists from a kidnapping incident when he was eleven.
kaede akamatsu bit more of a normal one, palate cleanser, kaede lived a relatively mellow life. any scars she has are probably just from skinned knees and stuff-- EXCEPT for a large scar on her knee from a bike accident as a kid. ouch girl.
angie yonaga angie comes from an island where blood donation is a pretty common practice, so she probably has a few marks on her arms from the procedure. given that i don’t know much else about polynesian culture and angie’s writing is pretty disrespectful as is, i think it’s probably better if i just leave it there as far as any scars she could have gotten in a ritualistic sense. i will say that angie spaces out when she does art, so she might have some scars from accidents caused while working-- she does work with a chisel after all.
miu iruma given that miu was in a car accident that put her in a coma, she probably has a fair amount of scarring all over her body. abrasions, and also burn scars aren’t out of the question. miu is a pretty reckless inventor too so hard to believe she wouldn’t have picked up a nick or two working on her silly little things.
tsumugi shirogane tsumugi sews, but needle pinpricks don’t really leave scarring as long as ur not going fucking crazy with it. i think the vast majority of tsumugi’s injuries would come in from her time working as a bartender. broken glass is pretty nasty, and people probably would’ve gotten into at least the occasional fight. maybe a little scratch on her cheek from a conflict that didn’t get defused before things started flying. tsumugi wishes her scars were cooler, but they are, as she is, quite plain.
himiko yumeno she has an appendix scar on her tummy and a few on her knees from tripping. pretty normal life though.
tenko chabashira hey why don’t we ever talk about the fact that tenko is literally a vigilante? i think that’s a pretty relevant detail of her character that nobody talks about. she’s probably witnessed a bunch of violent crime, and from a very young age, too... i think tenko has probably gathered her fair share of scars, largely on her hands, but some on her shoulders, face, and legs. she’s tough though! she looks on her scars with pride, memories of the times she’s been able to keep girls safe.
kirumi toujou as a competent maid, occasions where kirumi actually gets injured in her work are pretty rare. she’s an overworker though, so i think she might’ve pushed herself far enough to cut herself a few times while cooking. on the more dangerous side of her work, i definitely think kirumi is the type of person to endanger herself in the name of her duty, so scars from various murder attempts-- knife, gun, whatever-- are definitely not out of the question. maybe even a knife wound on the back... but kirumi walked it off. she is a maid, after all.
maki harukawa the obvious answer here is that maki is scarred all over and honestly FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK drs for pretending like that’s not true. in her training to become an assassin maki was tortured repeatedly, using a variety of methods, in order to toughen her skin and make it so that she could withstand great pain. i have a hard time believing there is a lot of maki’s body that isn’t scarred. aside from the scars from her training, i’m sure maki has also collected a fair amount of scarring from missions and such. oh girl.

Vegan Mafia's descending from her Thai paradise tomorrow, probably glowing with the kind of self-righteousness you can only achieve through a strict diet of organic mangoes and moral superiority. Meanwhile, I'm doom-scrolling through lamb slaughter stories like I'm prepping for a particularly bleak episode of "Black Mirror" meets "Old MacDonald Had a Farm."
This vegan manifesto she recommended? It's like reading "The Handmaid's Tale" except instead of women being oppressed, it's cows. The author cites sources with the same enthusiasm I have for small talk in elevators. But fuck me sideways with a celery stick, the lamb story's actually true. Some poor kid in Colorado signed up for something called the "Fat Lamb Project," which sounds like a rejected title for a body positivity documentary but is actually America's latest contribution to childhood trauma.
The picture of this sobbing kid is more gut-wrenching than the time I tried to eat an entire jar of pickled onions on a dare. They're calling it "tears of love." Right. And I suppose the Titanic was just taking a refreshing dip.
It's like we're stuck in some twisted moral maze where the exit signs are written in contradictions. Here's little Timmy learning about "responsibility" by raising an animal for slaughter. Next week's lesson: why setting fire to your teddy bear builds character.
My parents, bless their morally consistent hearts, had this radical idea that maybe traumatizing children wasn't the best educational strategy. When I was six, we rescued an animal from a carnival that looked about as happy as me during a mandatory office team-building exercise. That creature became family - the kind you actually want at Christmas dinner, not the aunt who keeps asking why you're still single.
Then there was the time it got hit by a car. Dad cried harder than me watching the first ten minutes of "Up." Said he'd give his retirement fund to save them. The vet basically said "Sorry, mate, all the money in Jeff Bezos's piggy bank couldn't fix this."
So Vegan Mafia hits me with the "You're not even vegan" line like caring about animals is an all-or-nothing deal. As if empathy works like a light switch instead of a dimmer. I tried veganism in college, back when my diet consisted mainly of anxiety and air. My body responded about as well as a cat to a bath.
Beans turn my digestive system into a chemical warfare experiment. Lentil crisps are fine until they're suddenly, violently not - like a first date that ends with you climbing out the bathroom window. Don't get me started on tofu. The texture's like trying to eat a kitchen sponge that's gained sentience.
With my nut allergy thrown in, going vegan would be about as sustainable as my New Year's resolutions. I'd probably waste away faster than my will to live during a three-hour PowerPoint presentation.
Look, I can be compassionate while still occasionally eating a chicken sandwich. It's not binary, like whether or not flip-flops count as proper footwear (they don't, you savages). I'm tired of this narrative being pushed harder than a broken shopping trolley.
Maybe it's about doing what we can, where we are, with what we've got. Sometimes that means eating meat while feeling worse about it than that time you probably drunk-texted your ex. Welcome to the human condition - it's messier than my search history and more complicated than explaining to your gran why you need sixteen different passwords.

Most hated side character?
Definitely Crowfeather. Listen,
Before I get into the meat, I'm gonna just show my absolute lack of taste-- I LOVE what the fandom does with him. You can take the sadboy divorced transmasc deadbeat dad from my cold, dead hands. It's so funny. It's delicious. I hope the fans never stop woobifying this fucking guy, there is no character in the history of English literature as dissonant from canon as Fanon Crowfeather.
But... in canon? Every time he shows up, I hate his ass. I hate the way the writers are building up towards Crowstar, I hate how the reckoning with him being a terrible father is confined to one book, I hated how Brambleclaw NEVER called out Crowpaw in TNP while being hypercritical of Squirrelpaw's actions, I hate how he got to be a Light in the Mist, I hate how Leafpool falls over herself to confess her love for him after the secret is out
And I really hate how Crowfeather is shown to be a generally miserable person from his very introduction, over 12 books of buildup, but he says ONE bad thing about Nightcloud and suddenly the narrative decides that's the truth. She's the reason Breeze hates his dad. Blegh.
And it sucks because I do like the idea of them both contributing to how bad Breezepelt turned out. I don't WANT Nightcloud to be utterly blameless here-- She was part of the plan to KILL Onewhisker. That is the sort of person who should plant bad seeds in the minds of their kids.
She should NOT be a person who did nothing wrong, but that is what is on the page.
In general this entire family annoys me whenever they're on screen, because I know it's not building to a satisfying conclusion. I love side characters who are mean, spiteful, and annoying; they add a lot of value to a Clan! But not when that doesn't go anywhere.
On that note, if you're looking for a real background character I have a bone to pick with, it's Blackclaw.
"Yes hello I am the writer of Shadow In RiverClan and I need to show the half-clan cats hanging out with a random character. What if I pick the most outspoken and violent background cat in the entire Clan? Genius. Looook Blackclaw isn't so bad :)"
Blackclaw then proceeds to join the WindClan rebellion and generally be spiteful and argumentative in every on-screen appearance that follows, heavily implied to be part of the angry mob that chases Stormfur and Brook out of RiverClan
#Blackclaw#Crowfeather#Nightcloud#Breezepelt#Warrior Cats Analysis#I really really dont like Shadow in RiverClan. im sorry#Feathertail deserves better
