Daniel walks out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist and a plume of steam from the shower billowing out behind him into the hotel room. He had left Max on the bed with Mr Roar, Soup, and his colouring book to keep him occupied while Daniel showered off the sweat from two free practice sessions.

Except, Max is not where Daniel left him.

“Oh, Maxy!” Daniel says, shocked. Max has never done this when regressed before.

Max stops, crayon still in his hand, and turns to face Daniel. “Drawed a car and a boat and a big tree, Daddy!”

Daniel blinks. Max has drawn a car, and a boat, and a big tree. On the white wall of the hotel room.

“I can see that, Darling, and they’re so good,” Daniel smiles, walking towards the boy and crouching down next to him. His towel unknots at the movement and Daniel has to hold it up with one hand before he’s forced to have this conversation with Max in the nude.

Max beams at him, his big blue eyes looking up at Daniel, and it’s clear that he has absolutely no idea that this is something he is not supposed to do. Max is such a good boy, if he knew drawing on the walls was naughty he would never have done it.

“Maxy,” Daniel starts, he’s going to have to find a way to tell Max that the walls are off-limits without Max feeling like he’s been naughty. “I know you love drawing, and Daddy loves your pictures, but we need to stop…”

He trails off. Max’s face has fallen.

There are two sides of Daniel fighting about how to handle this.

He knows he should tell Max that the walls are off-limits. That if Max wants to colour he needs to stick to the book. That Max isn’t naughty, because he didn’t know, but that he should not do this again.

But. Halfway through trying to tell Max exactly that, Daniel realises he doesn’t care. He doesn’t care about the walls. Or the paint. Or having to pay a redecorating fee to the hotel. He wants to sit and watch Max colour on the walls, he wants to grab a crayon and join him.

“Ah, fuck it,” Daniel mutters to himself.

“What are we drawing next then, Bud?” He asks Max, ruffling Max’s soft, ungelled hair.

“Doggy and a dinosaur!”
