We interrupt the scheduled summer dress for middle nephew's birthday present. He's getting a knight surcoat in orange and green, because he likes orange and he's in a knight phase. And because a) everyone does a lion rampant and b) the lion rampant on his toy shield is not doable in my budget or one month of hand embroidery, I figured I could make him a nice coat of arms.... By copying historical pictures from wikimedia commons.

The original plan was a paleo art doe, but then I stumbled over some Scythian stuff. And THEN the Scythians had a "chicken" (his favorite animal, if I'm up to date) that wouldn't cause strife if a Flemish kid wore it where the I-blame-my-fellow-countrymen-instead-of-the-Académie-Française-for-how-fucked-up-learning-French-is bigots can see.

So we've gone from "sewing a few rectangles together and hemming them, maybe knit a tiny mail shirt" to "which one of these designs can I feasibly hand embroider in a month?"

This is a reasonable gift for a soon-to-be 4-year-old, right? Right?

People are really sleeping on the angst potential of the old Mario cartoons. I mean, they've got:

Luigi getting possessed by ghost goo (Gooigi's villain origin story?),

Mario getting brainwashed by Bowser and Ludwig and ordered to kill Luigi (who got stuck with SMB3's worst Power-Up),

Mario getting zombified and immediately going for Luigi's throat (props to Walker Boone for just how scared he made Mario sound right before he lost himself),

Luigi and Yoshi slowly turning into chickens and attacking Mario and Peach over junk food,

Luigi being turned into an egg and the Koopalings having no chill about the fact that if said egg breaks, then Luigi's just dead. No ifs or buts about it.

Mario Finally Saves Luigi From Kidnapping

Luigi: Why did it take you so long to save me? When it was Peach it took three days!

Oh. My. God. Imagine you're the ruler of a kingdom similar to the Crystal Empire from My Little Pony and after battling with an evil for many moons, you finally manage to win your kingdom back. To celebrate, you invite all the neighbouring kingdoms, namely kingdoms such as the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopa Kingdom, to visit what is rightfully yours.

The rulers all gather for the celebrations with the people of the kingdom more than happy to rejoice now that they are finally free. You, as the ruler, decide to mark the day by showing off your power. After so long of fighting in shadows, your kingdom gets to gleam and shine again. With a surge of magic and you the crystal monarch at its centre, the people of the kingdom alongside the visitors get to witness a different form of themselves.

They all glitter and sparkle and glow, the appearance mesmerising.

And you, after pleasantries with the other kings and queens and royals. You're mesmerised with a particular ruler. King Bowser, whose shell has caught your eyes. The spikes look like they are made of crystal, his claws like quartz and his scales like flakes of carnelian. He looks like a gem more than anyone else in the ballroom and oh how you can't help yourself but invite him to dance.

The Koopa King who has never danced before. The Koopa King who has been avoided by the other monarchs the entire day. The Koopa King who looks so beautiful to you.

Simple to say you come out with many new allies after that day.

I found out that Bowser was going to be meaner in the Mario movie and that they made him more likable in the final move.

Like Bowser in the final movie tries to destroy the mushroom kingdom and preform a ritualistic sacrifice, hold Luigi to later kill to make Mario suffer, his love for Peach is faker than plastic, he treats his minions like trash.

Like outside of being funny Bowser has no good qualities, and I can only think about how he would have been.

Yeah, I remember reading somewhere that figuring out his personality was one of the most difficult parts of writing the script, and they kept making him too much like a "Marvel Villain" (or something along those lines.)

They definitely went the right direction by leaning into the "hopeless romantic" angle and playing up his insecurities. The way he fawns awkwardly over his crush? writes shallow romantic ballads while imagining her swooning? nervously rehearses one-liners? If that was all it was, it'd be adorable!

You see the seeds of what could have been good qualities. His sensitivity could've garnered compassion and his determination could've made him a good ruler rather than a good conquerer. It's the fact that he's both unable to accept "no" in any capacity and makes his personal insecurities the responsibility of everyone around him that make him so scary.

He obsesses over what he can't have and enjoys nothing more than the utter destruction of anything that dares to stand in his way, hence the weird adoring/vengeful behavior he exhibits toward Princess Peach. Peach is both something he wants and the thing telling him "no," and as a result he wants to take ownership of her and tear her down simultaneously... marrying her amidst a mass slaughter of her old allies and destroying her kingdom the moment she resists.

He is both terrifying and pathetic, so wrapped up in himself he can't see that he's a black hole of desires, constantly destroying his own chances at happiness in pursuit of an idealized version of validation. He's somewhat likable because you can relate to his vulnerability, and the way he awkwardly fumbles with his own romantic feelings is incredibly entertaining, but boy oh boy he is not anything close to a good person.
