#wei wuxian hides the wen remnants

i will always love and appreciate the irony and parallel of how in the first siege, the cultivators mass-attacked the burial mounds and destroyed everything, using wei wuxian’s cave to hide the aftermath of their brutality and in the second siege, it is exactly that cave which shelters the cultivators and infact, saves them from the fate they had once dished upon the wens without thought or mercy. it is how the place they had collectively condemned and looked down upon is precisely the place that keeps them alive when their circumstances finally turn on them. it’s the way that it is the home that had once occupied wei wuxian–the enemy of the cultivation world–that becomes their salvation in the end.
also, i don’t completely remember this but the array that protects them was missing bits that lan qiren helps remake and the thought that the reason the array was broken in the first place was because it was barged into by the cultivators during the first siege, whilst the remaining wens were inside it, a last ditch effort to save themselves, breaks my fucking heart. because the cultivators of the second siege were saved by the very tools that wei wuxian CREATED to help and protect and secure the wen remnants, the very people that these cultivators and their predecessors killed in cold blood.
#something to be said about how booming prosperity is historically created on graveyards of the oppressed#how the world will take advantage of the resources of the people they have wronged#how these ungrateful little cultivating fuckers will never realise the gravity of how they were saved that day#mdzs meta#mxtx mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#burial mounds#lan wangji#canon jiang cheng#lan qiren

all of the above are plot elements i've seen be called "plot holes" in various MDZS forums and discussions.
please explain your reasoning in the notes!!!!
explanations / possible fillings for plot holes:
qin su and abortions: one major reason why jin guangyao did not call off his marriage to qin su even after finding out that they were actually half-siblings is that qin su was already pregnant by that point, as the two had had premarital sex. it seems like this problem could be fixed, though, if jin guangyao caused qin su to miscarry somehow (eg. by sneaking abortifacients into her tea).
potential explanations:
abortifacients don't work on cultivators
jin guangyao wanted to respect qin su's bodily autonomy and did not want to cause her pain by causing her to miscarry, but he also could not think of an argument that would convince qin su to willingly get an abortion.
even if the pregnancy disappeared, it was still too late for jin guangyao to call off the marriage.
wen ning agreeing to help with the golden core transfer: at the time of the golden core transfer, wen ning already cares a great deal for wei wuxian - i mean, he betrayed his entire sect by smuggling jiang cheng out of the occupied lotus pier just because wei wuxian, who was nice to him once about his archery, asked him to. meanwhile, wen ning must have known what was actually going on once wei wuxian decided to transfer his golden core to jiang cheng, given that wen ning helped wen qing with the procedure. now, to me, it seems that if you care about someone, you should not allow them to literally give essential parts of themselves away and should instead try to prevent them from acting so self-destructively. to me, it seems that if wen ning really did care about wei wuxian, then he should have stopped wei wuxian from setting himself on fire to keep someone else warm.
possible explanations:
to wen ning, [helping someone do something they're determined to do, even if said thing is self-destructive] is a bigger demonstration of love and care than [imposing your own will over theirs by stopping them from self-destructing].
wei wuxian threatened to kill himself if wen ning and wen qing didn't help him with the golden core transfer.
wen ning legitimately thought that wei wuxian would be fine without his golden core and/or underestimated the negative consequences for wei wuxian, and thus did not perceive this as a self-harming act.
wen ning cared more about getting wei wuxian's approval and keeping wei wuxian happy than he cared about wei wuxian's physical and mental wellbeing.
once wen qing and wei wuxian committed to the golden core transfer, wen ning did not have the courage to speak up against them and/or saw that disagreeing would be useless.
wen ning also wanted to know if his sister's theory would work.
wei wuxian and lying about wen zhuliu getting him: one of the major factors straining jiang cheng and wei wuxian's relationship post-sunshot is that wei wuxian is no longer able to perform many of the second-in-command duties he had promised jiang cheng he would do, but he cannot tell jiang cheng why (ie. because he no longer has a golden core) because he does not want jiang cheng to find out that wei wuxian gave jiang cheng his own golden core. however, it seems like wei wuxian could get around this by telling jiang cheng that wen zhuliu also got wei wuxian later, which is both highly plausible and would explain why wei wuxian doesn't have a golden core anymore without suggesting any sort of transfer.
potential explanations:
wei wuxian didn't want jiang cheng to know at all that he didn't have a golden core anymore.
wei wuxian worried that any hint of "wei wuxian doesn't have a golden core anymore" would eventually lead to jiang cheng figuring out the truth about the golden core transfer.
wei wuxian doesn't want jiang cheng to feel guilty about "stealing" wei wuxian's "chance to meet baoshan sanren and get his core restored."
wei wuxian doesn't want to think about the fact that he no longer has a golden core at all.
wei wuxian didn't think of this. (plausible given wei wuxian's personality)
wen remnants not changing their names and going into hiding: after wei wuxian busts the wen remnants out of the qiongqi pass labor camp, he sets up shop in the yiling burial mounds with himself as their protector; this way, neither the jin nor anyone else can try to harm the wen remnants, because they'd have to go through wei wuxian first. however, what this decision also entails is that all of the wen remnants are now highly associated with wei wuxian; thus, once wei wuxian's reputation goes south enough, all the wen remnants under his protection get dragged down and killed with him. it seems that some of the less high-profile wen remnants (ie. the ones who are not wen ning or wen qing) could have avoided this had they changed their names and gone into hiding, preferably somewhere far away from this part of the jianghu, instead of all sticking together in the highly-visible burial mounds. even if lanling jin and the other sects have a high amount of influence in the local area, there's still an entire world out there; they could have tried fleeing to a different country. even if this option is not possible, at the very least, it should have been discussed and shot down (with an explanation) in the story.
possible explanations:
the burial mounds were under constant surveillance, so there was no chance for the wen remnants to escape without getting caught and killed.
lanling jin's influence is so far-reaching and powerful that there was no way the wen remnants could have fled far enough to go into hiding without getting caught first.
the wen remnants wanted to keep their family name and stick together with their family members.
the option was discussed and dismissed as implausible entirely offscreen.
jiang cheng not hunting down xue yang: the story's narration states that jiang cheng is widely believed to have consistently hunted down, tortured, and killed countless demonic cultivators, specifically because he believes they could be wei wuxian resurrected. meanwhile, xue yang is fairly well known due to his incredibly public massacre of the chang sect and then baixue temple and subsequent employment by lanling jin. furthermore, after xue yang was removed from jinlintai, xue yang set up shop in yi city, where he very openly killed a bunch of people and turned them into fierce corpses; in fact, one could consider the ghost-town status of yi city at the story's start to be due in no small part to xue yang's actions. however, despite xue yang being a very well-known demonic cultivator who has continued to openly demonically-cultivate, nothing in the text suggests that jiang cheng ever tried to hunt down xue yang. this seems to present a contradiction with the rumors about jiang cheng hunting down demonic cultivators.
possible explanations:
jiang cheng already knows that xue yang was not wei wuxian, so he doesn't care about xue yang.
jiang cheng fully believes that jin guangyao successfully killed xue yang upon becoming sect leader jin, and yi city is remote enough that no mention of xue yang's activities has ever reached jiang cheng.
jiang cheng got his ass kicked by xue yang entirely offscreen and it just never came up in the story.
the rumors about jiang cheng hunting down and killing demonic cultivators are not entirely correct.
lan wangji freely ditching lan xichen at the end of the story: the story ends with lan xichen basically getting put into the blender. first he finds out that his bestie jin guangyao actually orchestrated the death of nie mingjue and super lied about it, and then he's tricked by nie huaisang into stabbing jin guangyao. he's not doing too great. yet, at the end of the guanyin temple scene, instead of checking on his brother or even offering a single "are you okay?", lan wangji immediately fucks off into the sunset with wei wuxian. given that lan xichen was relatively supportive of lan wangji during lan wangji's 13 years of mourning, to many on this website, this reads as a failure of familial duties that lan wangji goes entirely uncriticized for by the narrative.
possible explanations:
it was an intentional writing decision and not a plot hole. MXTX thinks that, because lan xichen failed to see through jin guangyao's lies, lan xichen therefore deserves to suffer, so lan wangji is morally justified in ding dong ditching him.
lan wangji did screw up here, but it's an internally-consistent writing decision, not a plot hole. lan wangji is meant to read as a younger brother character who is more used to being taken care of than taking care of others.
no lube: at the end of the story, wei wuxian and lan wangji fuck nasty in some bushes. without any lube. the lack of some sort of lubricant, at least, doesn't seem to cause any problems with the anal sex itself.
possible explanations:
cultivator's asses are self-lubricating, or at the very least repair damage at an incredibly high speed.
the sex actually is quite painful, but wei wuxian was a virgin up until now so he just thinks this is normal.
the sex actually is quite painful, but wei wuxian is into it.
there was lube op just forgot (plausible because i only skimmed that section)
almost every sect leader unmarried: in this sort of setting, where blood and not ability determines inheritance, it seems like producing heirs and thus securing the future of the sect/clan should be of the highest importance. however, nie mingjue, lan xichen, jiang cheng, and later nie huaisang are all unmarried, and don't seem to have any heirs either. this goes doubly for the nie sect, who know themselves that they live shorter lives due to their cultivation style.
potential explanations:
cultivators live a really long time so it's not as pressing an issue.
there are wives and heirs, they are just offscreen.
gonna be real boss i got nothing else

Fic Finder
Nov 16th
~*~
1. Hi there! I'm looking for this fic that I thought I'd bookmarked, but I tragically had not. The premise is Wei Wuxian is asked to watch a class of baby Lan junior disciples when the teacher is pulled away, much to Lan Qiren's dismay. He's left watching them for much longer than Lan Qiren intended and ends up really helping the students, particularly one little kid who hadn't been able to develop his core very well yet. They go outside to test throwing snowballs with wind talismans and the kids all leave with more confidence in themselves. Lan Qiren is able to be convinced to let Wei Wuxian keep helping out with the baby juniors. @lucky-cat-13

2. Hey, I am searching for two fanfics.
(A) One in which I think wangxian are broken up or could be that LWJ died cause all I remember is that WWX obsessively draws LWJ's ears cause he couldn't remember how they looked and that it ended on a happy note also I think it was a modern verse but not quite sure .
(B) And in the second one all I know is that wangxian are strangers who bury a body together and that one of them probably LWJ was the one who helped WWX do so and that they were in a forest and it was night time and was a oneshot I think under 20k words.
Thankyou!
2A)

2B)

3. Hi! Thank you for the work you do. Could you please help me find this fic? It's set during the 14 years wwx is dead, focusing on lwj and his sect-- it has some great OCs with lwjs younger cousins who adore him, and specifically question the rules because of his punishment. Lwj also gets migranes? I think it's in progress, but not sure. Thank you!

4. Looking for fanfic where Lan Zhan is grieving and the rest of the Lan Clan regret whipping him and are trying to help him survive. I read it a few weeks ago go but forgot to bookmark it.
LAN xichen also bring in Yuan to visit lan zhan as he is healing to motivate him to heal quicker.
But any recommendations about angsty lan zhan * Wei ying in general is appreciated. @wildcat12

5. Hello, I have a request.
Wei Ying survived the first siege of burial mounds but his soul was shattered and he was the kind of child who needs to be watched and lan wangji takes him to the cloud recesses to care for him and at some point wei ying keeps trying to hurt himself or die and as for lan wangji he keeps on taking care for him for 13 years until wei ying successfully killed himself and got summon in mo xuanyu body. @lanwuxian0725

6. I am back again, please, you are wonderful, i need help finding another fic. (One day i will start logging the titles of fics I love.) I know the plot, but all my keyword/tag searches have been unsuccessful. So, For a Fic Finder: It's a modern (no magic) fic set just as we went into full pandemic lock down. (It may have been set in Canada - but I'm not positive on that detail.) Wei Ying is an artist--a painter, and he lives with Lan Zhan, who (i think) teaches music. They are friends but not yet a couple at the fic's start. A big plot point is Wei Ying has a setious unspecified auto-immune disease (i recall one symptom was painfully swollen joints) that is debilitating when it flares up. It also means he has to stay strictly home due to his immune system being compromised. Let's see...Lan Zhan has bunnies and as he gets really depressed during lock down, he uses his hefty trust fund to shop online for increasingly ridiculous/expensive stuff (think stuff like jeweled bunny water bowls from Tiffany and Cartier). Eventually, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan confess & get together. The only thing after that, that is sad, is how much they both miss LZ's son, A-Yuan. A-Yuan & Jingyi are at university and initially stay with Jiang Yanli when campus shuts down. Wei Ying thinks that they won't be able to come home for break as planned, because they don't want to risk Wri Ying getting covid. But the ending of the fic is both boys secretly super quarantine themselves and then borrow a car and drive the long road home. A-Yuan was adopted by Lan Zhan and at the very end he calls Wei Ying "Dad," which is a huge deal to Wei Ying.
If someone can find this. I will be so grateful! @emrinalex

7. Fic finder please! I mostly remember WWX as the final girl trope and it was listed in the tags. It was kind of a horror and mystery story where his mother was killed by serial killer? And JGY was helping them? There were shoes involved. And nhs and WWX get caught and have to fight xy and escape. then LWJ has some kind of ghost gift and comes to find them. It was so good and I can’t remember the title to find it to read again! 😭😭😭
FOUND! 8. Hi I was wondering if you all could help me find a fic? It was a modern au where WWX was a spy and had to break up with LWJ but he ends up getting injured and breaks into LWJ’s place to bleed out on his couch after not seeing him for years. I know LWJ was a surgeon or at least a doctor in the fic and that Lan Yuan shows up as a kid LWJ meets at the hospital. Wen Qing and Lan Xichen are also in it from what I recall. Thank you for all that you guys do! @peerlessplantma
FOUND? 8 sounds like a deleted fic by scarletmoontears called empty space beside me? Currently unfinished at about 26K words
I could've sworn i was subscribed to updates but it's not in my subscriptions, I think this is a WIP?

9. Hi! I have yet another fic that I can't remember the name of. It was on AO3
What I remember: Wangxian were immortals who are living in the modern age (Modern AU). Wei Ying lives as a famous actor, Jiang Ying, where his fans regularly know that he is a troll --- Wei Ying tends to tweet. There was this whole thing where a fan brought up how Wei Ying looks like this old legend story Wei WuXian and Wei Ying actually responds to the comment online and confirms it to be true. No one takes it seriously bc well they know Wei Ying is a prankster. (This ofc, is the time that Wei Ying is NOT lying)
TLDR: wangxian immortals, modern AU, on AO3, Wei Ying is a famous actor under name Jiang Ying
THANKS! Much love! @chenqingmagic

11. Hello! Love this blog for all the fics its given me <3! I'm looking for a fic where Wei Wuxian is left behind during the fall of Lotus Pier,, Jiang Cheng still escapes with his mom, but that's all I can remember. Any help I can get will be appreciated!!
11 seems familiar to me although I can't remember whether madam yu also escaped with jc or not. It was probably a wwx birthday project WIP which I'm sure was in my bookmarks. But I can't find it now, I can see a mystery work when searching with specific tags which could be it but again I'm not sure

13. Hi! There was this fic that I was reading a while ago but lost… do you think you could find it? I believe it was a teen wangxian fic, cloud recesses arc. Wwx is teasing Lwj in the library pavilion like usual, but pretty much freezes because it’s storming outside. It was then revealed that wwx’s fear of storms came from his fear of lightning, which of course stems from his trauma related to madam Yu.

14. Hello! There was a fic a while back. Wei Ying and the wen Remnants were in Gusu. But while Lan Zhan was away the elders put Wei Ying on trial, silenced him and whipped him? His siblings show up right at the end and he's barely hanging on. I don't think it was ever finished, but it was good and I have a craving to read it again.Thank you! @loremipsumflotsamandjetsam
i think i have seen it, possibly a thread fic on twt? Maybe with WY being a prisoner in the Lan sect and A-Yuan stays with him, LZ does not know him and hates him but then gets to know and understand him better? And then he leaves CR for some time and JGY of SS possibly do something to make WY seem guilth and whipped so when LZ returns he is livid and proclaims marriage? But sadly i don't remember who's fic that was :( Though i don't remember WY's sibs being there, so maybe that's another one. Also in the one i read WY wakes up after the whipping and finds out LQR and LZ cared for A-Yuan during blackout… It was an interesting one anyway

16. Hello 🐇💙 Looking for one of the many canon divergence fics where the Wens and WWX end up at Lotus Pier instead of, you know, dead. The one specific identifying detail I can provide is WWX being in chronic pain from the core removal and WQ trying to figure out a way to help him. At least one instance of WWX trying to hide/downplay the pain and basically collapsing before he accepts the help. @linderel
Alas, this is a good fic but not the one I'm looking for! Pretty sure the one I want has WQ sticking WWX with acupuncture needles for pain management, and WWX actually experiences flare-ups of acute pain (and no it's not RoseThorne's fic either, they are definitely at LP not BM)
NOT FOUND 🔒 if you’re leaving baby let me down slowly by ravenditefairylights (M, 36k, WangXian, XuanLi, Past MingXian, Canon Divergence, Golden Core Reveal, Implied/Referenced Sex, Miscommunication, Somebody Lives/Not Everyone Dies, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Angst with a Happy Ending, Twin Prides of Yúnmèng Dynamics, Hurt WWX, Mutual Pining, Unreliable Narrator, Self-Esteem Issues, Twin Prides of Yúnmèng Feels, Protective Siblings, Trauma, Slightly dubious consent, courtesy of drunk sex, Inventor WWX, Genius WWX, Phoenix Mountain, Chronic Pain, Getting Together, Fix-It of Sorts, One Braincell Trio, PTSD) WQ gets really upset before WWX will accept her help, but I think the only time WWX collapses in the fic is because of a panic attack, so it doesn't match exactly

17. Hi! I’m looking for a fic where Wei wuxian comes back as mo xuanyu and goes to pier. He pretends to be a woman and goes to gusu with Jiang Cheng, Lan wangji meets Wei wuxian pretending to be a woman and starts to fall in love. Lan xichen notices and talks to him because everyone thinks Wei wuxian and jiang cheng are dating and he doesn’t want his brother’s heart to break again. There was also a big meeting between sects where someone asks how many kids Wei wuxian and jiang cheng want to have, Wei wuxian answers but Jiang cheng says he wants none and everyone’s shocked before Jiang cheng reveals that Wei wuxian is his heir and not his lover.when everyone goes to yiling city Wei wuxian is forced to use some demonic cultivation but isn’t caught and all the juniors love him for being his cool and mischievous self. I’d be so grateful for any help in finding this fic! @sentient-halloween-candy

18. Re-submitting this in the hopes that someone might know this since it wasn't found last time 😞
About the fic:
It's been a long time since I read this one, so it's an older fic (at least more than 3-4 years ago). It was centred around MDZS as a story with Jiang Wanyin as the MC and YLZ as the villain. Our main characters had a whole fandom around it, where LWJ is a famous author and WWX a not-very-popular artist who drew fanart of the most hated character in the book "Yiling Laozu" (I think he was an artist, could also be a fellow writer).
I remember there was lot of fandom discourse about WWX and his choice of character to support and how YLZ was always jealous of JWY and did actually maliciously cause everything he was accused of in this alternate MDZS canon. Then, suddenly, LWJ + WWX end up pairing up for a fandom event (a big bang or smth similar), and WWX has the idea of a story where canon divergence occurs and YLZ is a good person instead (like actual canon) and LWJ agrees to write for it.
This was as far as I had read for it. From I remember it was a WIP. Thanks <3 @indelibleme

19. hi I wanted to ask for this fic

Wei Wuxian: The Untamed Hero
Wei Wuxian had to be killed even if:
1. He carried his sword
2. He didn't use gui dao
3. He didn't create Yin HuFu
4. The Wen remnants were not in the plot
Then, why? The reason is here, voiced by Jin Zixun of all people:
Wei WuXian, you are too bold! Did the LanlingJin Sect invite you today? And you dare run wild here. Do you really think that you’re invincible, that nobody has the courage to confront you? Do you want to overturn the Heavens?”
Wei WuXian smiled, “You’re comparing yourself to the Heavens? Excuse my language, but your face is a little too thick, isn’t it?”
So, you see, this untamed heart can only meet with tragedy as the world is unrighteous, as those who are in power think their actions cannot be contested (and they often aren't!), and that their words are like the law. How many times have we seen, a convicted powerful person escape the justice system? Far too many. And how many times innocents or victims were framed for crimes? Also too many. People like Wei Wuxian aren't condemned by fate, but rather, being born into a world where the "heavens" are those who are powerful and corrupted, he very well might be destined to live tragically, along with others of his type.
Returning to the matter of this particular scene: on one hand, the Jins throw private banquets, gilded with gold. The major scandals are: Jin Zixun is forcing the Lans to drink alcohol! You see, Lan Xichen can't outrightly refuse, so he is trying to be polite about his rejection. Jin Guangyao is trying to reason and excuse, and distract. The crowd spurs Jin Zixun on, wanting to see the Lans drink for once and fall to their level.
Everyone is in their own fine little world, doing their niceities in their golden halls drinking expensive wine, admiring pretty women, gasping at scandalous behavior, asking for favour, gossiping etc.
And then Wei Wuxian walks in. Uninvited. He simply drinks the wine himself, before demanding these people to spare him their time for real wordly issues, such as deaths, debts, cruelty, the parts that society wishes to hide. A few scenes later, we are shown with much description, just how terrible Qiongqi Path is. That's the Jin's backyard. You see their achievements that are drawn on those big walls? We see the reality of the people making them.
Now, let us come to another incident. Think of the soup incident. I fully expect before Wei Wuxian came into the scene, people were simply gossiping, uninterested in finding out what was going on, why Lady Jiang is crying. Then, Wei Wuxian comes and realizes Jiang Yanli who never really cries... was crying, and firstly decides to beat the shit out of Jin Zixuan. Secondly, he understands the whole truth, beats Jin Zixuan up for humiliating his Shijie, and also makes the other girl face responsibility.
Although his shijie had an easy temper, except for how they cuddled and cried together the day the three of them reunited after Lotus Pier was destroyed, she hadn’t really shed many tears in front of others, much less cry so loudly, so pitifully in front of so many people. Wei WuXian was filled with panic. As he tried to ask her, Jiang YanLi was crying so badly that she couldn’t even speak properly. Then, when he saw Jin ZiXuan standing on the side, astonished, he fumed with anger, wondering to himself why it was the dog of a person again. With a kick, he pounced on Jin ZiXuan. The fight between the two would have alerted the Heavens. All of the cultivators around the base came to break up their fight. Amid the ruckus, he finally understood what was the cause of all this, and became even more angered. He spread his tough talk, saying that one day he’d definitely make Jin ZiXuan die in his hands, he told people to drag out the cultivator woman.
A round of questions later, the truth emerged, and Jin ZiXuan’s entire body was frozen. No matter how much Wei WuXian continued to curse at him, he returned neither words nor fists, his face dark. If not that Jiang YanLi held up her hand a while later, while Jiang Cheng and Jin GuangShan came to pull Wei WuXian away, it was likely that even now Jin ZiXuan wouldn’t be able to attend the hunt of Phoenix Mountain.
See.
The point is, perhaps, people feel Wei Wuxian's actions are unnecessary. But imagine if he wasn't there! The consequences as I predict them will have been:
1. Jiang Cheng who doesn't want to upset a prominent clan would've grumbled and cursed underneath his breath, but eventually just moved away from the ruckus and taken his sister away.
2. Perhaps the truth would never have been found out, unless Jin Zixuan later searched by himself.
3. Thus, Jiang Yanli's reputation would be stained for the years to come.
It's because Wei Wuxian dared that the truth was revealed. I took this small incidents simply to highlight this, without the addition of more factors. In the book, often, it might seem like people are trying to stop him from creating trouble. You might often wish, ugh, this is going to be so bad... The point is Wei Wuxian knows! He's not stupid, he knows of the consequences of his actions.
But he isn't the one creating trouble. It was already created by the likes of those very people who try to stop him from investigating deeper. The trouble in question is that immoral and unrighteous words and actions and decisions have already been made. Society tries to hide them. If you can't see it, it's not there. Yet, even if it is not visible, a crime has its traces and it will bleed into their world sooner or later.
Wei Wuxian forces people to snap out of their comfort zones. He doesn't care for the barriers they set around themselves. Here are some examples to explain what I mean by these barriers:
Who dares hit Jin Zixuan, who's the only heir of LanlingJin, even when he deserves it? Protected by his status, his birth, his clan who dares? Wei Wuxian does.
Who dares to annoy Lan Wangji, the second jade of Lan, who from birth is considered otherwordly, strict, immovable, rigid, untouchable and protected by his extreme cold aura? Wei Wuxian dares.
Who dares to enter cultivation society without even wielding sword, without even cultivating a core? Wei Wuxian!
Since time unknown, treasures have belonged to the powerful sects: The Lan Clan and their library, their many secret techniques. The Jin clan and their treasures, their gold. The Nie Sabres. The Zidian. Yet, a son of a servant somehow ends up possessing the most powerful treasure all by his own! Everyone goes to this popular refinery, some famed blacksmith, or that popular sect to get specially created spiritual weapons, yet Chenqing, one of the most powerful weapons, was forged alone by Wei Wuxian during his 3 months in the Burial Mound!
Since years, the cultivation world has taken to heart rules of Lans, words of the powerful sects, and their leaders! Then, once again, this orphan child comes and bends the world and changes the cultivation society forever! Yiling Laozu said that... Yiling Laozu created... Yiling Laozu's manuscripts...
His words literally become the law.
Think of how 13 years after Wei Wuxian's death when "all was peaceful" despite us knowing very well, just how much shit happened after his death - slaughter of minor clans, deaths of two prominent sect leaders, xue yang etc (because, you know, most of it was purely accidental, kept hush-hush, or the victims were people who weren't important), he comes back to life and in a matter of a couple of months, upends the cultivation society again.
The "problem" is that this guy simply doesn't conform. The problem is that he is better. The problem is that he is not unnecessarily humble about it, despite his origins. He doesn't seem to treat himself as an outlier, but an equal. (That's why I hate insecure Wei Wuxian, like this guy is righteous enough he won't even treat himself badly.) The problem is that all those barriers - social classes, power, the locked doors - they won't keep him away.
Even if he was only the Jiang Da-shixiong with a bright golden core, he will still not be a conformist. To those who aren't used to having their decisions questioned, he is their worst enemy. To whose who are used to talking in circles, spreading rumors, he is asking them. What source do you have? What is the factual evidence behind what you are saying? Why are you saying this now?
Think of how he cross questioned a petty seller selling Yiling Laozu portraits in Qinghe, and how he questioned the gathered cultivation sects in Lotus Pier during Sisi and Bicao's intervention with the same sort of attitude. Surely, there was a major class difference, power difference between the two. Yet, they don't matter to him. What matters is the truth.
So, no matter what, when the people who are in power, start having too much dirty laundry and corpses in their backyards, he will definitely know. For this guy, knowing isn't enough - he will get to the crux of the issue. The problem is, he even has the skill for it. He has the ability. One also can't distract him with offers, promises, gifts, riches, status, women. He doesn't care for any of that. He perhaps might even hate one's victims. Yet he will stand up for them.
Of course, those who are in power, all smile at each other. They understand things sometimes have to be done. People sometimes have to be silenced. "We know better."
Then, Wei Wuxian comes in and says, actually you don't. He comes in with factual accounts, evidences, forces you to face your misdeeds. Says you're all a bunch of hypocritical people. No, perhaps what is worse is that he will make you realize that's what you are! Because he's got to be good at talking, too! He's not going to act on anger or be stunned in fear.
So, now you have someone who's not only digging into your evil deeds, someone who's capable, who's not easy to persuade, but also someone with high emotional intelligence who can play the same role as you do, of being a noble, accepted gentlemen with immaculate manners, of very high literacy and outdo you. Because this guy knows very well how society works, he can comprehend social cues perhaps better than you can. He can use your own polite words and nature against you.
It's precisely because of this he must be killed. Perhaps, in every world, Wei Wuxian will end up being the victim. It's only that in MDZS, these were the particular circumstances, and those were the particular excuses.
My personal take is: sometimes it is good to be a centrist, and hold everyone's better intentions in mind. most of the times it might not be, as there are many conflicting systems in place that allow for true victims who are stuck. most often, the victims are always the ones who DON'T have a voice, who are brushed over as numbers of corpses, rather than people with stories. most often, kindness is shown in little action that are trampled upon by those who hold true power. most often the people who are good, who are heroes die young, or are hated and ridiculed, for speaking up for the victims. it's not right, and never will be.
if someone like wei wuxian or his presence in the book makes you uncomfortable it might be because you hold the "niceities" and the pleasantries to be of more importance than the issues at hand. just because something is too troublesome doesn't mean it is wrong. if everytime he enters the scene you're scared of what he's going to do next, you should know it's not him who is the problem but the prople who aren't doing anything who are. don't be scared of "trouble-makers." he's not erratic or spontaneous. he has considered society's standards and deemed it useless. why is that that the koi tower scene, where he is in his "yiling laozu, loss of control, threatening" moment is followed immediately by him being extremely kind to Wen qing ? it's not that he's losing control. it's that Jin Zixun wouldn't have acted and told him where the people were without him using intimidation tactics. Wei Wuxian is the one forced into bad corners by the powerful people, where he has to show his edges. Don't end up twisted the narratives. if you bite someone for a while, expect to be hit.

Wen Qing the Accidentally-Acquired Jiejie
Even though their relationship initially started off as a debt exchange—from Wen Ning rescuing Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, to the Wen siblings sheltering the two and conducting the golden core exchange, to Wen Qing begging Wei Wuxian to rescue her family—it settles into a surprisingly amiable relationship once the they and the Wen remnants settle into the Burial Mounds. Though she doesn't give him a pet name like Jiang Yanli does or like she, herself, has for Wen Ning, Wen Qing treats Wei Wuxian exactly like she did Wen Ning upon her introduction:
Wen Qing, “Calling me your sister now? I haven’t asked you yet. Since when have you been so bold? How dare you hide people! I’ve already snuck a few questions earlier on. So that was why you suddenly wanted to go to Yunmeng! How full of yourself are you? Who gave you so much courage? If Wen Chao knows about this wouldn’t he tear you to apart? If he really is set on killing someone, do you think that I can stop him?” She spoke quickly and clearly. Her forceful tone allowed for no objections. Wei WuXian couldn’t find anywhere at all to interrupt her. Wen Ning’s face was as pale as snow, “Sister, but Young Master Wei...” Wen Qing continued, voice stern, “I won’t say anything too much seeing that you did it out of gratitude and that’s an understandable reason. However, these two must not stay here for long! You came suddenly and left suddenly, meanwhile Wen Chao lost the two of them. Do you think Wen Chao is that much of an idiot? Their search will reach here sooner or later. This is the supervision office under my command, and this is your house. What accusation do you think it’ll be if they discover that you’re hiding them? Think carefully!” ... Wen Ning, “B-But the Wen Sect people...” Wen Qing cut him off, “What the Wen Sect does doesn’t represent what we do. We don’t need to be responsible for the Wen Sect’s wrongdoing. Wei Ying, there’s no need to look at me like that. There’s a beginning to all debts. I’m the office leader of Yiling, but I was ordered to take the position. I’m a medic, an apothecary, I’ve never killed anyone, much less touched the blood of the Jiang Sect.” ... All were silent within the room. A few moments later, Wen Qing spoke again, “Don’t pull out the needle. The brat would start throwing a fit if he wakes up. His shouting voice could be heard from even outside. Pull it out after his injuries have healed. I really don’t want to deal with Wen Chao, especially that woman around him. It disgusts me!” She went out the door as soon as she finished. Wei WuXian spoke, “She... means that we can’t stay for long, but we can still stay for a few days... right?” Wen Ning nodded, “Thank you, Sister!" A pack of medicinal herbs was tossed in from outside the door. Wen Qing spoke from afar, “If you really are grateful then put in some effort! What a hell kind of medicine did you just make? Brew it again!”
—Chapt. 60: Poisons, exr
vs.
Wei WuXian, “No need. Why use spiritual energy for such a small wound? It’ll get better after some sitting around.” Lan WangJi didn’t waste any words with him, grabbing for his hand again. At this point, two people came from outside of the cave. Wen Qing’s voice sounded, “Get better after some sitting around? Did you think I’m dead?”
...
Wei WuXian lifted his leg and picked Wen Yuan up, swaying him in the air, “Why are you here? Finished crying so soon?” Wen Qing threatened, “Just watch how I make you cry later!” Despite what she said, her voice still sounded nasally. Wei WuXian, “What a joke! How could you make me... Ah!!!” Wen Qing walked up to him and gave him a loud slap on the back, so hard that it managed to make Wei WuXian cough up a mouthful of blood. His face is full of disbelief, “You... You’re so cruel...” After he finished, he shut his eyes and passed out. Lan WangJi’s face paled as he went to catch him, “Wei Ying!” Wen Qing, however, revealed three silver needles, scolding, “I have crueler things that you haven’t seen yet. Get up!” As if nothing happened, Wei WuXian got up from Lan WangJi’s arms, wiping away the blood at his mouth, “Please don’t. The cruelest is the woman’s heart. I wouldn’t want to see that.”
...
Wen Qing walked out from the kitchen on the side, holding a plate, “Hung them for you. We’ll make a few more tomorrow to hang in the mountain path. If you hurry around in the dark all the time, you’ll slip and break your bones sooner or later.” Wei WuXian, “I have you here even if I break my bones, don’t I?” Wen Qing, “I wouldn’t want to do more work. It’s not like I’m paid. If you break them, don’t complain if I hamper with your bones when I put them back.”
—Chapt. 75: Distance, exr
While her words may seem harshly blunt and biting, they belie her true caring personality. Though she rips into Wen Ning for endangering them by rescuing Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian simply because Wei Wuxian was nice to him, once, she immediately acquiesces to allowing the two to remain hidden under her jurisdiction, providing them with medication and a place to rest. Though she rips into Wei Wuxian for his reckless behavior concerning his health, she is concurrently treating his injuries and caring for him. She even teases him at multiple points in time around and about Lan Wangji, just like an older sibling teasing their younger sibling about a crush:
Wen Qing watched Lan WangJi’s expression with her inky eyes, “HanGuang-Jun, have a seat?” ... Wei WuXian, “But there’s nowhere to sit here, is there?” Wen Qing was indifferent, “Of course there is.” As she finished, she swept the things on one of the stone beds onto the ground, showing no mercy at all, “Look, now there’s a seat, isn’t there?” ... Laughter was just starting to fill the Demon-Slaughtering Cave when Lan WangJi turned around without saying anything and proceeded to walk out of the cave.
...
At the mention of the Cloud Recesses, Wen Qing glanced at Wei WuXian, asking him as though she didn’t care, “I forgot to ask you. You’ve never brought anyone up Burial Mound. What’s the deal today?” Wei WuXian, “You mean Lan Zhan? I met him on the way.” Wei Qing, “You met him? How did you meet him? You ran into him again?” Wei WuXian, “That’s right.” Wen Qing, “What a coincidence. I remember that you two ran into each other once in Yunmeng as well.” Wei WuXian, “There’s nothing special about it. A lot of cultivators from other sects travel in and out of Yunmeng and Yiling.” Wen Qing, “I heard you call him directly by his birth name back then. Quite bold, aren’t you?” Wei WuXian, “He calls me directly by my birth name as well, doesn’t he? It’s nothing. Got used to it when we were young. Neither of us care.” Wen Qing, “Really? Don’t you two have a bad relationship? Heard that it’s like you’re ice and fire, fighting every time you see each other.” Wei WuXian, “Don’t listen to the rumors. Our relationship really was quite bad in the past. During the Sunshot Campaign, we did get into a few fights because of our bad tempers. But afterwards, it wasn’t as bad as the rumors say. We’re so-so.” Wen Qing didn’t say anything else.
—Chapt. 75: Distance, exr
The final nail in the coffin that breaks down the separation the two have in Wei Wuxian's head is the banquet that the Wen remnants host for Wei Wuxian. Because of both his terrifying reputation during the Sunshot Campaign and the circumstances surrounding him becoming their protector, everyone except for Wen Qing and eventually Wen Yuan kept their distance from Wei Wuxian. But because of Wen Qing's faith in him and their trust in her, they still followed Wei Wuxian out of the Qiongqi Path labor camp and finally worked up the nerve to host a family meal for Wei Wuxian after he successfully revives Wen Ning's consciousness. This, in turn, touches Wei Wuxian so much that he no longer views their plight as a thankless and solitary undertaking:
Wei WuXian fished him up and tucked [Wen Yuan] under his arm, humming, “... Who cares about the crowded, broad road? I’ll walk the single-plank bridge all the night... All! The! ... All the night?” When he hummed the ‘night’ part, he realized that it didn’t seem like nighttime at all. He’d always walked up the mountain in the dark, but tonight, things were different when he was walking back. The area around the little shacks were swept clean. Even much of the weeds were removed. A few red lanterns were hung up in the forest at the side. All of the lanterns were made by hand. Hanging on the branches, although its round shapes were simple, it gave off a warm light that lit up the pitch-black forest.
...
The rest of them sat down along with him. When they heard his praise, they all beamed as though they had received the greatest compliment ever, and began to eat. It was the first time that Wei WuXian couldn’t tell what the wine tasted like. He was thinking, To walk it all the night... huh? It wasn’t really that dark at all. All of a sudden, his entire body felt refreshed.
—Chapt. 75: Distance, exr
So even though the two were initially tied together through a cycle of debt and repayment, this tie eventually gives way to a siblinghood unintentionally forged through mutual affection and unconditional trust in one another.

The Wen Remnants were Wei Wuxian's Family
Wei Wuxian had multiple families before. He had his parents, but they died. He had the Jiangs, but they weren't really his family to begin with. He was never treated like a family member in the household, and he never belonged in the family either.
I feel like the real family that he had in his first life were the Wen remnants.
“…Who cares about the broad and bustling highway?” He humphed. “I prefer to follow the single-plank bridge into the darkness… Into! The! …Into the darkness?”
When he sang out the word “darkness,” he suddenly noticed that it wasn’t dark at all. The black summit he always returned to was vastly different tonight.
The area around the few little huts had been swept clean; even the weeds had been pulled. Several round, vibrantly red lanterns hung in the nearby woods, dangling from branches. The lanterns were all handmade. While they were simple and crude, they emitted a warm light that illuminated the pitch-black forest.
The fifty-odd people would usually have finished their meals and holed up in their run-down shacks by now, with the lights extinguished. But tonight, they were all gathered in the most spacious hut. That hut, which consisted of a rooftop held up by eight wooden stakes, could accommodate everyone. The small structure next to it was the “kitchen,” so this had become the dining hall.
He saved them when they were slowly being killed. He did it because it was the right thing to do. And he was the only one who willingly laid down his life for them.
Life may be cruel for them, but they made the most of it with each other.
Wei Wuxian, finding the sight strange, walked over with Wen Yuan under his arm. “Why is everyone here today? Not heading off to bed? It’s so bright with all those lanterns.”
Wen Qing walked out of the kitchen, carrying a plate. “The lanterns were hung for your sake, oh elder one. Let’s make more tomorrow and hang them on the mountain path. It’s not easy to find your way around in the dark. You’ll trip and break a bone one of these days.”
“Come now, even if I break a bone, don’t we have you?” Wei Wuxian said.
“I certainly don’t want to do extra work. It’s not like I get paid for it,” Wen Qing shot back. “If you do break a limb, don’t blame me for bruising you when I set it.”
...
“What, you guys haven’t eaten yet?” Wei Wuxian asked. “Nah. We were waiting for you,” Wen Qing answered.
“Why are you waiting for me? I already ate,” Wei Wuxian said.
As soon as he spoke, he realized he’d made a mistake. Sure enough, Wen Qing slammed a plate onto the table, and the red chili peppers sprinkled over the vegetables bounced with the impact.
“No wonder you didn’t buy anything. You spent everything at a restaurant, didn’t you?” Wen Qing raged. “I’ve only got so much money, and I gave it all to you. Look at how carefree you are with your spending!”
“No! I didn’t…” Wei Wuxian tried explaining himself.
Look at Wen Qing and Wei Wuxian's cute little banter 😆. To me, they are the most iconic duo. The way he trusts Wen Qing to help him out with his injuries is so natural! I bet they were really close to each other. Maybe even as close as siblings!
The other cultivators busied themselves with setting out chopsticks and pouring tea, saving the head seat for Wei Wuxian. Seeing them like this made him feel uncomfortable about accepting the gesture.
Over the past few months, he had been fully aware that the Wens were somewhat afraid of him. These people had heard of his vicious name and his insane deeds during the Sunshot Campaign. They had heard the widespread rumors of the savage, evil ways he took his anger out on people. With their own eyes, they had seen him order corpses to murder the living. In the beginning, old Granny Wen’s legs would shudder nonstop whenever she saw him, and Wen Yuan would hide behind her. It was many days before he dared to slowly approach him.
Although he saved the Wen remnants, they were still terrified of him XD. Guess Wei Wuxian really made a name for himself during the war. But Wei Wuxian didn't hold it against them. He was still kind and gentle towards them, and after some time, they started to warm up to him, to see him as their own, as their family.
But now, those same fifty pairs of eyes were watching him. Although there was still some fear in their gazes, it was the sort of fear attached to respect and reverence. Their eyes also carried a trace of cautiousness, and some intent to ingratiate themselves. However, it was by and large the same gratitude and goodwill that shone in the eyes of the Wen siblings. “Thank you for everything you’ve done, all this time,” Wen Qing said quietly.
They appreciate what Wei Wuxian had done for them and decided to host a feast for him TwT.
“You…are suddenly being nice to me. I’m kind of scared?” Wei Wuxian said.
Wen Qing’s knuckles seemed to briefly crack, and Wei Wuxian immediately shut up. However, she continued her quiet speech.
LOL 🤣🤣🤣. Wen Qing just wants to keep the somber atmosphere and Wei Wuxian can't help but tease her.
“…They’ve always wanted to have a meal with you, and to thank you. But you’re always busy running around or locking yourself up in the Demon-Quelling Cave for days and telling everyone you’re not to be disturbed. They were afraid they would distract you from your work or bother you. They thought you didn’t like to mingle with people and that you didn’t want to talk to them, so they didn’t want to pester you with any attempts at conversation. When A-Ning woke up today, Si-shu said we had to make you sit down for a feast, no matter what… So just sit down, even if you stuffed yourself to bursting earlier today. It’s fine even if you don’t eat. Just sit and chat, have a drink, and that’ll be enough.”
Wei Wuxian was struck silent. Then his eyes lit up. “Drink? There’s booze up here?”
The elder Wens had been watching them nervously, but as soon as they heard him say that, one immediately responded.
“Yeah, yeah. There’s drink.” He passed Wei Wuxian several tightly sealed jugs that had been sitting on the table. “It’s fruit wine. Made from wild fruits picked on the mountain. It’s got some real body to it!”
“Si-shu also loves to drink,” Wen Ning said from where he was crouching by the table. “He knows how to make wine and made those specially for tonight’s dinner. He tried for many days.”
Because he now spoke so slowly, one word at a time, he did not stutter. Si-shu gave an abashed smile but continued to nervously stare at Wei Wuxian.
“Is that so?” Wei Wuxian said. “Then I gotta give it a try!”
He sat down at the table, and Si-shu immediately opened a sealed jug and passed it to him with both hands. Wei Wuxian sniffed it and smiled.
“It does have a pretty nice body!”
The others sat down along with him. After hearing his praise, smiles split their faces as if they had been greatly commended, and they dug in with their chopsticks.
🥹🥹🥹. Such a heartwarming family dinner. I wonder if this is Wei Wuxian's first time having such a dinner. He certainly didn't enjoy the meal whenever a certain Madame was around.
For the very first time, Wei Wuxian paid no attention to the wine’s flavor.
He thought to himself, Follow the path into the darkness…huh?
It wasn’t all that dark.
Suddenly, he felt refreshed and alive.
This act of kindness by the Wens might not seem much to us. But it meant so much to Wei Wuxian. It showed him that even though the road to righteousness is dark, there's always a tiny beam of light shining through. It showed him that there's always hope in the darkest times. And that this time, he's not alone in it anymore. He's got his new family, and that is what's most important.

💠💙Light of Stars (and the Destroyer)
By:Sanguis
Summary:
The marriage is supposed to be a punishment, a way to extend Wei Wuxian’s isolation. After all, Wangji has met the man (when they had both been boys, untouched by war); Wei Wuxian could hardly be asked to fit seamlessly into the regimented life of a Lan.
Yu Ziyuan is a formidable, cruel woman, Wangji decides then. She is also wrong if she thinks Wangji will play part in her cruelty.
(And Wei Wuxian, it seems, is so much more than meets the eye).
*
There is a tale of the Light of Stars and the Destroyer.
Chapter:1/1
Words:22,196
Status:completed
At Wangji’s side, Wei Wuxian has run out of patience. Wangji feels it in the shift of his husband’s stance, and squeezes Wei Wuxian’s hand. If the sect leaders are going to be deliberately obtuse, well then Wei Wuxian has never been one to pull his punches. Wangji should know. “You wanted to speak to the Yiling Laozu,” Wei Wuxian says, “so speak.” It takes them by the throat. Wangji looks at a fixed point ahead, but he still sees the statement ripple through the gathered clans, sees a few of them choke. Sees the smarter ones put one and two together to make three, connecting the young cultivator who had razed the fields of Qishan, laying waste to the Wen army, to the young man who had stood defiant in front of Jin Guangshan in his own palace, to the protector of the Wen remnants, to the thing that had settled in the Yiling Burial Mounds. Yiling Laozu. Yiling Laozu wed to Hanguang-Jun. (Wangji shouldn’t smile but he thinks the one to make it to Qi deviation first is Lan Qiren).
~~~
Ah, hostage?” Wei Wuxian says. “I don’t hold anyone hostage, least of all children. The boys can go wherever they please.” This is met with great disbelief, as if they can’t see with their own two eyes that the children aren’t restrained. A-Yuan is starting to feel upset, if the way he clings to Wei Wuxian is any indication, his bottom lip wobbling in a manner he has definitely learnt from A-Yu. The only thing that keeps him from crying is the gentle whispers from Wei Wuxian telling him he is being very good, and that he’ll only have to be good a little longer. “Jin Xuanyu, come to your father,” Jin Guangshan says, smiling like a reptile. Wangji almost laughs at the mere idea of it, that Jin Guangshan has ever been a father. Jin Zixuan looks uncomfortable enough at the idea, throwing a disparaging look at the man who had sired him, as if to say that Jin Guangshan has never been a father to anyone. “A-Yu,” Wei Wuxian says quietly but clearly, “go to your father.” This, too is met with silence. Wangji feels A-Yu shift against his leg as if having decided not to hide anymore, and his eyes widen when the child tugs at his sleeve. A-Yu says, “Baba, up!” It’s purely on reflex that he lifts A-Yu into his arms, the weight familiar. A-Yu, still shy and nervous, buries his face in Wangji’s neck. It’s where he’s most comfortable, and Wangji can’t help but settle a protective hand against A-Yu’s back. The gathered sect leaders and their disciples watch this whole thing, too stunned to even speak or protest. “Well,” Wei Wuxian says cheerfully. It masks his surprise well, but Wangji had seen a flash of it. “That’s clear then. Let it be known that this is not Jin Xuanyu. It cannot be anyway, since I gave birth to this child and no one’s laid a hand on me except for Hanguang-Jun.” Wangji says nothing, not a word. His ears grow hot, but his expression remains completely smooth. He had done more, much more, than simply lay hands on Wei Wuxian, but that is something no one else is privy to.
Why Jiang Cheng is more like Shen Jiu than Liu Qingge: An Essay
1. Anger
All three characters are almost completely defined by their anger or aggressive natures. Both jc and lqg have similar expressions of their anger: they attack and lash out with their weapons and shout and yell. Their anger is loud. Sj's anger is quieter, more passive aggressive than explosive. He won't unsheathe Xiu Ya but will rather lash out with scathing words and insults. However, despite the difference in outward expression, sj and jc's anger serves the same purpose: a shield/mask to hide behind and protect their true emotions with. Lqg's anger doesn't serve a purpose like jc and sj's. His anger simply is.
Both jc and sj have, notably chosen, older brother figures that broke a promise to them and that they feel betrayed by, giving both deep abandonment and trust issues. For jc, it is Wei Wuxian and him leaving the Jiang Sect in order to protect the Wen remnants in the Burial Grounds. For sj, that's Yue Qingyuan and him not coming back in time to rescue sj from the Qiu household. It can be argued that Yue Qingyuan didn't break his promise as he did try, but sj didn't know that. In contrast, lqg is the older brother in his family and seems to have a good relationship with his younger sibling.
2. Older Brother Figures
3. Fire
Both jc and sj have fire and their "homes" being burned down as significant features in their backstories. For jc, that's the Wen's burning down Lotus Pier. For sj, that's him burning down the Qiu estate. Different circumstances, yes, but significant nonetheless. While we know little of lqg's backstory, fire is likely not a significant factor.
4. Villain
At least in the English speaking side of mdzs and svsss, both jc and sj are not widely liked or held in high regard. If you only take the protagonists' at their word and don't consider how the narrators may be unreliable, biased, or have missing information, you will likely see both of them as villains or at least antagonists within their respective stories. They're characters that, if you like them, you tend to sympathize with them and look at story events from their perspectives rather than from the perspective of our protagonists.
5. Rumours
Both jc and sj are the subjects of horrible rumours within their respective stories. While jc's, regarding him torturing demonic cultivators, are unknown if they're true or false, we have nothing to confirm they are and sj's rumours were proven false once Shen Yuan learned more about him. Regardless of the truth of the rumours, neither contested the rumours themselves and instead let them fester, possibly for strategetic reasons. Neither seems to mind ruining their own reputations if it will benefit something or someone else.
6. Cats
In fandom content, both are often compared to cats and portrayed with a hot/cold personality. They both are fairly prickly, deeply distrust other people, and tend to keep to themselves.
7. Ships
Both have fairly popular ships pairing them with one of the most powerful cultivators of their generations who wears a lot of white, are sect leaders, and whose sects are located on mountains. Yes, this is a silly reason but why not.
8. Demonic Cultivation
Both have ties to notable demonic cultivators of their worlds, though their situations are different. Sj with his time "studying" under Wu Yanzi and jc with Wei Wuxian. They also are notably said to have killed these demonic cultivators, though jc didn't actually do so while sj did.
—
I think lqg and jc get compared because people see them both as tsunderes, but i don't think there's anything tsundere about lqg at all actually. Lqg doesn't necessarily deny his feelings, he just doesn't always confess them in words either
#mxtx mdzs#mxtx svsss#jiang wanyin#liu qingge#shen jiu#mxtx#svsss#mdzs#i'm being silly and this was written for fun but i also accept no criticisms
💙 Lay my body down by tawaen
💙 Lay my body down
M, 48k, Wangxian
Summary: One of the fragments of Wei Wuxian's soul, splintered during the first siege of the Burial Mounds, uses the energy released by the Yin Tiger Tally and flees backwards through time to another moment where Wei Wuxian was close to death – after the fall of Lotus Pier, at the hands of Jiang Wanyin. Knowing how his first life will end, Wei Wuxian decides to hide his survival, and leave the cultivation world behind. Kay's comments: This story left me absolutely speechless, it was just so perfect! As if someone magically knew all my favourite things and wrote them into a story. It's got genius inventor Wei Wuxian, who becomes a rogue cultivator of sorts and finds his family with the Wens! It's got actual consequences from grave injuries that aren't magically healed! It's got Wen Qing being a good leader and the best sister! It's got Lan Wangji suffering the pain of loss much sooner and therefore learning his lesson sooner and holding on tight to Wei Wuxian when they meet again! It's got the sects getting what they have coming! And it's also incredibly well-written and I literally couldn't stop myself from reading it in one sitting. Excerpt: Wei Ying is too exhausted and in too much pain to deal with the rage, fear and grief. He is already overwhelmed with those feelings from the fall of Lotus Pier. He cannot process the memory or any of his emotions now. Right now, he needs to focus on healing as much as he can. The Wen will come for them soon. His golden core opened his airways and protected them while he was unconscious. He focuses the remainder of his spiritual energy on his back; he needs to stop the bleeding. He can't stay here, but he needs to be sure he won't loose too much blood or get infected through the open, weeping gashes on his back. He meditates as Jiang Cheng's breathing evens out, having finally burned through his rage and cried himself to sleep beside the broken, bloody body of his childhood companion. Once he is sure all the bleeding stopped, he slowly rolls himself into the water of the river next to them. When Jiang Cheng wakes, it will look like Wei Wuxian moved in his sleep – drowned and carried away by the river.
On Life debts in MDZS
Recently finished watching Anle Zhuan, and holy crap, it really just sets even more into perspective how important life debts were in Chinese culture, especially in the days of dynasties. Long story short, the FL has a filial obligation to clear her family's name and exact vengeance on the ML's family - but you know what throws a wrench in her plans? The fact that the ML keeps saving her. Of course, this is a moral dilemma more easily offset by how she keeps saving him as well, but the fact that this is even worth mentioning and considered a serious quandary by the main character and her allies at one point really says something. And it got me thinking deeper about the implications of such life debts in MDZS.
In MDZS, life debts are immeasurably important. And how you honour that life debt is a measure of your character. When you owe someone a life debt, you owe them something immeasurably precious. In MDZS, MXTX knows that and shows it. She uses life debts to tie characters together and to drive the plot.
Life debts are the reason Wei Wuxian feels so duty-bound to the Jiang Sect and the Jiang family. They're the reason he's willing to lose an arm if it means no damage comes to his sect. They're the reason he tolerates being punished with methods beyond what's ever acceptable for a Head Disciple of a Sect. Because Jiang Fengmian saved him from living a life on the streets all those years ago, never mind that JFM himself owed Wei Wuxian's mother a life debt.
Life debts are the reason Wen Zhuliu is so blindly loyal to Wen Ruohan, committing countless atrocities in the name of the man who saved his life.
Life debts (and perhaps also genuine love), are why Jin Guangyao is so loyal to Lan Xichen. Because despite every other moral he eschews in his pursuit of power, he will always remember the sincere kindness Lan Xichen showed him when every other cultivator judged him for his heritage. And in the same way, we see Lan Xichen protecting him from Nie Mingjue under the excuse that Lan Xichen owes his life to Jin Guangyao.
Now let's talk about when life debts come into conflict with "filial duty".
It always irks me when people bring up family and filial duty to criticize WWX's "betrayal" of his sect, or try to undermine his judgement and actions when he protected the Wen Remnants. To me, it just shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the novel and the context around the text. When people call Wei Wuxian a "troublemaker" for leaving the Jiang Sect, they're falling prey to the very prejudices and classism MXTX condemned in the novel. Yes, the Wens burned down Lotus Pier. Yes, the remaining Jiang Sect would've had an obligation to go to war and exterminate the Wens. But you know what brings this duty to avenge your sect to question - in almost every way you look at it? When someone who never even participated in the bloodshed saves your life.
So, if we want to talk about filial duty and reciprocation - Jiang Cheng - and by extension, his sect, owes Wen Qing and Wen Ning a massive life debt (and that's not even considering the GC transfer). Even if we ignore the cultural context regarding debts, that's huge. Let's take a step back and look at what Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng owe the Wens.
The initial life debt. Wen Ning saves Jiang Cheng directly from probable execution (like his parents), as well as hides Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng from the Wen soldiers in his own room. In doing this, Wen Ning has already crossed the line of treason towards his own sect. Keep in mind - Wen Ruohan is his uncle. And here he is, risking his life to save two boys - only one of whom he's actually had any meaningful interaction with.
The days after. Both Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng are heavily wounded, the former from his whipping via Zidian + wounds sustained during the battle, the latter from Wen Chao's torture. In the days following, Wen Qing nurses both Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian - enemies of her clan - back to health.
The debt Jiang Cheng owes further. People need a proper send-off in order to ensure their passage to Diyu, or the Underworld - and that could only be done for JFM and YZY because WN risked his life even further to bring back the personal items (and in some adaptations, their bodies) of Jiang Cheng's parents. In simple terms, Jiang Cheng wouldn't even have Zidian if not for Wen Ning.
The golden core transfer. There are two separate components to this. The first is limited - from Jiang Cheng's perspective.
Here's what JC knows: 1. He has no core, but there is a chance he can have his core restored by Baoshan Sanren. 2. The only way Baoshan Sanren would ever agree to this is if he impersonated Wei Wuxian, the son of her beloved disciple. 3. Jiang Cheng is a sect heir; he grew up wealthy, in relative comfort. He's at the top of the food chain. Wei Wuxian, on the other hand, is an orphan. He grew up being demeaned for his heritage. In truth, he inherited nothing from his parents. But what Jiang Cheng knows is that Wei Wuxian did have an inheritance: one precious thing, the location of an immortal. And then he gives that favour-his entire inheritance-to Jiang Cheng. Wei Wuxian, at this moment, essentially hands over everything he has left of his dead parents (who Madam Yu has slandered for his entire life) to Jiang Cheng.
From Wei Wuxian's perspective, the debt is this: his close friend and heir to the Jiang Clan has no core. He believes that Jiang Cheng needs his core - as he's been displaying suicidal tendencies after losing his. However, Wen Qing has a theoretical thesis on golden core transfers. This surgery has a 50% chance of success. To the knowledge of everyone involved, Jiang Cheng consented to getting his core back by whatever means necessary. He explicitly never questioned how Baoshan Sanren would restore his golden core. Anonymous organ donors are known to be a thing, even by modern medical standards. And WWX stays awake for two nights and a day without any anesthesia as Wen Qing cuts into his body and takes something he has spent over half of his lifetime cultivating, to give to Jiang Cheng.
"He had to be awake. He had to watch the golden core connected to his spiritual pathways be peeled from his body. He had to feel the gradual suppression, sedation, settlement of his originally surging spiritual powers, all until they became a pool of dead water, unable to rise ever again."
There's definitely also a case to make about Jiang Cheng essentially sacrificing himself to lead the guards away from Wei Wuxian, but you could also argue that Wei Wuxian saved his life just a chapter earlier by dragging him away from Lotus Pier when he returned. Also, it's got nothing to do with the Wen Sibs, towards whom they both owe debts.
By this time, Wen Qing and Wen Ning have already gone above and beyond to help the Jiangs and WWX. Saving the life of the sect heir is one thing, but to perform a never-before-done borderline heretical act of surgery to restore the heir's golden core? Another thing entirely.
The moral obligation of the Jiangs and Wei Wuxian to avenge their sect by killing the Wens does come into conflict with the debts they owe the Wen siblings. But compared to slaughtering Wen Chao, and the Wen soldiers during the Sun, how far does honouring filial duty by exacting vengeance on the Wen Sect go? Wen Qing herself declares she and her brother separate from Wen Ruohan. They're healers. They don't take lives.
From every depiction in Chinese media and culture, life debts are not to be taken lightly. A life debt is meant to be honoured and repaid. It's not something any half-decent person would mention maybe briefly in a Discussion Conference and then immediately shut up about and never mention again when someone louder (*cough*NMJ) speaks up. By turning his back on Wen Qing and Wen Ning, Jiang Cheng had demonstrated a significant moral failure as well as a misunderstanding of his own sect's motto. Along with his personal reasons, Wei Wuxian has every reason to protect the Wen Remnants.
So why, people ask, is Wei Wuxian so hellbent on protecting Wen Ning, Wen Qing, and the rest of the Wen Remnants? The easiest answer: he's a good person. He's compassionate, kind-hearted, empathetic to a fault; he isn't the type of person to stand by and watch if innocents and the helpless starve or suffer. He saw and recognized that what the Jins were doing to the prisoners of war was wrong, and chose to interfere. The other answer? He owes them a debt. He owes Wen Qing and Wen Ning a debt the rest of the Jiangs don't even know about. You want to discuss it in simple terms? Wen Ning is the only reason the Jiang Sect still stands. Wen Qing is the only reason the Jiang Sect has a cultivator for a leader by the end of MDZS. She committed the equivalence of cultivation heresy to save Jiang Cheng because Wei Wuxian begged her. WWX defending her family in return is…. Really the least he could do.
I've seen people calling the Wen Remnants war criminals, even equating them to the mafia, and I can't help but think - what book were those people even reading? if you're not willing to consider the culture and values or just use basic critical thinking when consuming a piece of media - don't try to slander the actions of its characters. Anyone who read the novel and understood the intended themes would not, in good faith, condemn Wei Wuxian's decision to protect the Wen Remnants.
MDZS atla au:
• remnant air nomad wei wuxian (air nomads being a minority of wanderers, like his parents) secretly taken in by the jiang clan after being discovered as the young avatar.
• He's raised as a fire bender as part of the lightning fire Jiang clan of Yunmeng, a firebending clan with the biggest amount of lightning benders and who teach the art, with Jiang Cheng and yzy specializing in it. We wuxian was taught by Jiang Fengmian to redirect it. Yzy comes from a smaller subsect, jfm is a firebender who doesn't really look the part but has adequate strength as clan leader, shijie is a non-bender and a disappointment, and Jiang Cheng has a rather aggressive bending style. The clan wears purple and has a more Japanese style. Jiang cheng and Wei Wuxian are the twin prides of Yunmeng, brilliant firebenders often fighting in tandem.
• Also bending fire is the tyrant nation of the qishan wen, featuring brilliant non-bender wen qing and underestimated fire bender wen ning. They have a similarly Japanese style.
• The Nies are rulers of qinghe and are less extravagant than their fellow earthbenders, the jins. Their earthbending has a classical aggressive and firm style. The second son is a notoriously weak nonbender. They wear the blacks and greens of the earth.
• The Jins of the Lanling kingdom are well known for extravagance similar to the inner city of Ba Sing Se. Their defining trait is the more common ability to bend metal, shown in the brilliant gold displays created by their most talented. Not that they are all actual metal benders, however, as displayed by Jin Guangshan himself. Many can bend only earth with a metal bending style swifter than that of the Nies. They wear the yellow of gold and dry earth. Jin Guangyao is a non bender (or a weak bender) and mo xuanyu is a normal bender, born to a nonbender mother. He's hopeless in metal bending, though. Jin zixun just sucks.
• The reclusive yet powerful Gusu tribes are lead by Lan Xichen and his uncle, the master waterbender similar to Pachu. They wear fur lined clothes similar to their water tribe counterparts but with a more Chinese fashion, especially pertaining to their inner clothes. They can be seen wearing the dazzling white of the water's spray and of ice as well as the tranquil blue of the water they bend. Their style is flexible and peaceful, as demonstrated by their twin jades. They hold themselves up to lofty standards and their elders can be inflexible. They still have token engagement necklaces.
• Wei Wuxian's air bison, Lil' Apple, is a nuisance.
• He wakes in the Cloud Recesses of Gusu after (almost?) being killed 13 years ago after the Qishan fire nation's attacks ended. Part of their seige included attacking the neighboring fire benders, the Jiangs (whose capital they destroyed) and the southern Gusu tribe (of which there is no north?). Only Wen Yuan remains to carry out the Wen bending style. Wei wuxian is rather peaceful and accepting of his fate after waking up again 13 years later, in the company of Gusu juniors, as well as metalbender Jin Ling and Ouyang Zhizhen, heir to a smaller clan.
• Wei Wuxian prefers airbending (which he was instructed to hide before the Sunshot Campaign) and excels in firebending, which he grew up with (although he cannot lightning bend. Maybe he can redirect it?) He can earthbend in a style less firm than the Nies an less extravagant than the Jins (not sure who taught him.) Waterbending is more difficult for him to get used to, primarily because of Gusu and their teaching techniques, as well as his tendency to observe, dodge, and strike rather than patiently use his enemies' strength against them. He does learn it, however, and becomes more comfortable with it after waking up, working in sync with Lan wangji (something he does with other elements, too, mainly air).
• Notable previous avatars include Lan An, Lan Yi, and Wen Mao.
• Baoshen Sanren should be a previous avatar, but because Wei Wuxian needs to lie about the core transfer that wouldn't work. So instead she is a reclusive airbending master who has her own temple instead of living in the mountains (wwx takes jc to an empty temple) and she taught wwx's mother as well as the airbending nomad Xiao Xingchen.
• Song Lan is anything but an Airbender. I don't want him to be a waterbender (so he isn't like a certain someone) so he'll be a firebender.
And I'll add more (about bloodbending) later!
my personal jiang cheng morality wank
things i do kind of side-eye jiang cheng for:
trying to strangle wei wuxian after the fall of lotus pier
torturing wen chao to death with wei wuxian
not suggesting to wei wuxian and the wen remnants that the wen remnants change their names and go into hiding, instead of living super conspicuously together in the burial mounds. i side-eye mxtx for this one more tho bc it does kind of seem like the option just never occurred to her
being rude to wen ning when he and jiang yanli secretly visited wei wuxian in the burial mounds to show wei wuxian yanli's wedding robes
saying that wei wuxian caused jiang yanli's death
not just participating in, but leading the first siege of the burial mounds
not being more openly affirming of jin ling
placing incredibly high expectations for achievement on jin ling that jin ling feels pressured to fulfill
not doing more for the common people of yunmeng as leader of the yunmeng jiang sect
calling jin guangyao a son of a whore
not telling wei wuxian how he actually lost his golden core
things i do not blame jiang cheng for:
trying to keep wei wuxian from harassing lan wangji during the cloud recesses lectures
telling wei wuxian to mind how the latter's actions reflect on yunmeng jiang
being verbally acerbic to wei wuxian
holding wei wuxian back after wen chao tried to use mianmian as living bait in the xuanwu cave
telling wei wuxian not to stick his neck out for lan wangji and mianmian and getting annoyed when he did
blaming wei wuxian for the fall of lotus pier
not realizing that wei wuxian was lying about baoshan sanren
not realizing that wei wuxian no longer had a golden core
being okay with jiang yanli marrying jin zixuan
not officially standing by wei wuxian and the wen remnants, and instead publicly expelling wei wuxian from the yunmeng jiang sect
stabbing wei wuxian in the abdomen during their public break-up fight
blaming wei wuxian for jin zixuan's death
being angry with wei wuxian over jiang yanli's death
any rumors and/or hearsay about the alleged torture and execution of demonic cultivators
""""abusing'""" jin ling
trying to exorcise wei wuxian's spirit from mo xuanyu's body with zidian
using fairy the dog to confirm wei wuxian's identity in qinghe
being verbally acerbic to jin ling
threatening to break jin ling's legs
smacking jin ling when jin ling kept trying to rush into battle at the second siege of the burial mounds
being angry with wei wuxian and lan wangji for entering his ancestral hall
physically fighting back when wei wuxian turned the verbal confrontation at the ancestral hall into a physical one
not somehow figuring out the truth of the golden core reveal any time before wen ning told him about it
being upset with wei wuxian for not telling him about the golden core transfer
being upset that wei wuxian broke his promise to be the twin heroes of yunmeng with jiang cheng
The Lans and Nies have no right to check and intrude between whatever is going on between Wei Wuxian, the Wen remnants and the Jins. Yet, they somehow have enough rights to go and witness the deaths of Wen Qing and Wen Ning with their clan disciples. And why were these two being killed? Because Jin Zixuan died by the hands of Wen Ning in an ambush set forth by the Jins upon Wei Wuxian, who was invited to Koi Tower by the Jins! So, it's definitely the Jin's matter, yet now you guys can come!
And what ends up happening? Somehow, Wen Ning who is being supported by Hanguang-jun loses control and ... kills Lans and Nies? Not the Jins! In the Jin palace! In an event orchestrated by the Jins! Death by a fierce corpse that the Jins should have prepared for! A whole ass cultivation sect? And a fierce corpse can go and kill whoever it wants?
But great!
Because you guys didn't ever go and check what the matter at Burial Mounds actually was like, because not your problem! Now, it has become your problem and you're forced to take part in the oath ceremony to go raze the Burial Mounds, and then you know, to defend himself, Wei Wuxian comes! And somehow it's his fault for "slaughtering." As if you guys weren't going along with the flow, not even questioning for a second why the smart Yiling Laozu would kill the people who could have stood up for him? And then what? You guys were present at the Oath Ceremony so more of you ended up dying, and now you have to go and take part in the slaughter of 50 innocent men and women and old people!!
Just because you were in positions of power, yet chose inaction. You got completely played! Naive.
Now, that's not enough yet.
Now, there's only two people who could've saved Nie Mingjue - Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing. But they're both already gone! Perhaps if Lan Wangji wasn't in seclusion, he would've stood up against the slaughter of all those minor clans who "tried to assassinate sect leader Jin"! But he is!
Now, Lan Xichen would rather shrug off both of his sworn brothers showing utmost hostility towards each other and increasing amounts of killing intent as a misunderstanding. He would think, oh he's being so nice and nuanced, understanding how people have to sometimes do bad things to maintain peace :((
Like, Lan Xichen's whole identity is built over avoiding conflict. When it comes to good and evil, there is no third side. How can you preach righteousness if you're not willing to carry the burden of morality? Sympathy doesn't equate to righteousness. Perhaps, if be wasn't a sect leader, he'd be good. But when you're a sect leader, being good isn't enough! Your inaction amounts to hundreds of lives.
Wei Wuxian perhaps has the most blood on his hands yet he values even the life of some useless servant, or some half-dead grandmother. You're all letting entire clans die to maintain a peaceful environment and you're thinking you're being righteous. If you have doubts then check them out!
Why are Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji so fated?
Well, firstly they've seen how "ugly" the other can get. Lan Wangjj knows that Wei Wuxian can turn up the heavens for righteousness, that he'll gladly walk through hell, if he could he would even offer up his own pieces of flesh. Wei Wuxian knows Lan Wangji cannot pretend things are okay when they're not. He is stubborn to no end with what he believes to be right, is willing to bear each and every consequence. He'd rather do what he thinks is right and accept the punishment later, whatever that will be.
In the face of truth, you can't hide, and you can't be prejudiced.
Wei Wuxian was hurt so much by Wen Chao, thrown into the Burial Mounds yet he brought the same surnamed Wens into Burial Mounds willingly to protect them! How can Nie Mingjue simply act on his hatred? In your righteousness to kill all evil, you started killing without exceptions and became the evil himself!
And why does Lan Xichen not have anything to say about Xue Yang? "Er-ge... this is what father wants." But Jin Guangshan is also a sect leader! Lan Xichen is also a sect leader!
I wonder what Lan Xichen said to Wangji after his visit to the Burial Mounds.
"Xiongzhang, there isn't an army but a child, the elderly, the women."
"Wangji. I understand. But Wei-gongzi has really upset the orthodox society now. It is no longer about the Wens. His cultivation is evil, and he holds the Tiger Seal... he even brought back Wen Ning's consciousness... you believe you know him..."
And boom, tell that to Jin Guangyao and three days later, everyone knows about Wen Ning. Props to Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji for not holding grudges towards anyone and simply riding off to the sunset and even helping everyone who never tried to understand their true hearts.
Both of them are really blessed.
JC better be fucking glad that the whole "i was given a boon from BSSR b/c of my mom" thing was just a lie made up for the Golden Core transfer. that could have been the last fucking thing WWX has from his mother and he just has zero qualms about taking it. both he and his mother truly believe WWX owes them all that he has, including his life, his gratitude, and the memories of the parents he barely remembers.
JC screams "you're the reason my parents and sister are gone!". yeah? well your mom has been actively taking away and destroying the memory of WWX's parents and you just proved that you'd also do the same if given the opportunity.
an actual brother (blood or not) would show concern about what WWX was offering to sacrifice. JC did not, not even years later.
Jiang Cheng lives his life by what he believes others owe him, not what he actually owes others. Even when he knows he owes someone else, he will not repay it if he sees the debt as a "hardship."
Wei WuXian finally lost his temper, “Jiang Cheng! What- What do you think you’re talking about?! Take it back—don’t make me give you a thrashing! Don’t forget. Who was the one that helped us burn Uncle Jiang’s and Madam Yu’s corpses? Who returned to us the ashes that are in Lotus Pier right now? And who took us in when we were chased after by Wen Chao?!” Jiang Cheng, “I’m the one who fucking wants to give you a thrashing! Yes, they helped us before, but why in the world don’t you understand that right now any remnant of the Wen Sect is a target of criticism! No matter who they are, with a surname of Wen they have committed a most heinous crime! And those who protect the Wen are at risk of being condemned by everyone! All the people loathe the Wen-dogs so badly that the worse they die the better. Whoever protects them is against the entire world. Nobody would speak for them, and nobody would speak for you either!”
—Chapt. 73: Recklessness, exr
[Jiang Cheng] could manage to tolerate others, but definitely not Wen Ning, the Wen-dog who put his hand through Jin ZiXuan’s heart and ended both his sister’s happiness and her life. Just a look, and he felt the urge to kill him right there. How dare he step foot on the earth of Lotus Pier—he really was looking for his death!
—Chapt. 89: Loyalty, exr
With a shove, Jiang Cheng pushed aside the panicking Jin Ling who was supporting his side. Though he was already losing blood, blood still rushed to his head in his anger, making his face cycle through shades of white and red. He spat, “What gives you the right? Wei WuXian, what gives you the fucking right?” From behind Lan WangJI, Wei WuXian said stiffly, “What right?” Jiang Cheng replied, “How much has my family given for you? I’m his son. I’m the heir of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect. But all those years, I was never enough next to you. Their love, their dedication, even their life! The lives of my father, mother, older sister, and even Jin ZiXuan! Because of you, all that’s left now is an orphaned Jin Ling!” ... “And then look what happened? You went to shelter some outsider, haha! From the Wen Sect, of all people. How many years did you eat their food and drink their water?! You betrayed us in an instant without any hesitation! What do you think my family is to you?! Endless good deeds, you’ve done them all, whilst every fuck-up was always because you had no choice! You ‘had no choice’! What difficulties can’t you explain?! What hardship must you hide?! Hardship?! You don’t tell me anything, you treat me like a moron!!! “How much do you owe my family? Shouldn’t I hate you?! Couldn’t I hate you?! What gives you the right to suddenly make me feel like I should be the one that’s sorry?! What gives you the right to make me feel like some fucking clown after all these years?! What the hell am I?! Do I only deserve to be blinded by your glory, by your light?! Shouldn’t I hate you?!”
—Chapt. 103: A Hatred for a Life Part 6, boat-full-of-lotus-pods
Jiang Cheng, on the other hand, looked about ready to lose his mind on the spot. He said, “You? You?!” The force of the punch had been too powerful. Not only did it go right through Wen Ning’s chest, the shock of it also shattered part of his vocal chords. Unable to form a single word, he fell towards the ground. ... Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi went to the corner. Wen Ning was still half-collapsed onto Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling in an awkward position. Wei WuXian laid him flat on the ground. After studying the dark hole on his chest, he fretted, “Look at you......What should I use to fill this now?” Wen Ning asked, “Young Master, is it serious......?” Wei WuXian said, “It’s not serious. You don’t need the organs here anyways. But it looks bad.” Wen Ning replied, “It’s not like I asked to look good......” Jiang Cheng was silent.
Dream a little dream of me
Warnings: mildly suggestive content, descriptions of scars and injuries
The kiss is slow but passionate, intoxicating in its love-filled softness. Wei Wuxian moans into it, consumed with sensation and the knowledge of just who it is that's causing it - and he can only hope he's making it feel just as good for his partner.
Wei Wuxian feels lightweight, floating, even on the cold, hard floor of his cave - and he can't help wrapping his arms around Lan Wangji's neck and pressing himself even closer to him, as if trying to merge into one. Lan Wangji hums against his lips, and, using one hand to keep himself upright, allows the other to trail over Wei Wuxian's robes, deftly working to undo his sash.
But that snaps something in Wei Wuxian's conscious and he's quick to break the kiss and grasp Lan Wangji's wrist, pulling it away. "Lan Zhan, I-I'm not - I can't, there are scars, I-"
Lan Wangji seems to be moving his hand and Wei Wuxian lets go, when he suddenly feels Lan Wangji's fingers entwining with his own, gently.
"You are beautiful to me, always will be. I will not judge and I will not ask."
His golden eyes glimmer with love, with desire, with so many emotions that Wei Wuxian feels overwhelmed looking at him - but not in the way that he wants to run away and hide, defensive. He feels safe and wanted for possibly the first time in his life, he feels like he can be open and vulnerable, unravelling before the eyes of the person he never realized he loved before.
Wei Wuxian pulls Lan Wangji into another kiss again, and feels tears burn inside his eyelids - but he ignores them, because this isn't a moment to cry during, it's a moment to enjoy, a moment of happiness and reprieve that he's never had but desperately needed.
So, he lets go of Lan Wangji's hand - hadn't even realized they've been holding onto another still - and opens his robes himself. Lan Wangji kisses him deeper now, and lets his hand trail along Wei Wuxian's side. Goosebumps raise in his wake and Wei Wuxian moans in his mouth, fingers entangling into his hair, playing with the knot of his forehead ribbon.
But Lan Wangji wants to see him, has dreamt of it for so long - so he regretfully lets go of Wei Wuxian's lips and arousal swims in his veins when he sees Wei Wuxian chase him out, a whine escaping his kiss-bruised lips.
The robe pools around Wei Wuxian's body not unlike the wisps of resentment that slither around him when he fights, framing a beautiful, though emaciated, scarred figure. Lan Wangji lets his hands slide over from Wei Wuxian's collarbones, down his chest, so very lightly over his Wen brand, down the visible ridges of his ribcage, the remnant muscle of his torso.
Wei Wuxian watches him, breathing in slowly. He wishes he was more of a sight for Lan Wangji to see. He wishes he still had his lean, toned body, well-fed and strong and healthy, the body he loved showing off like a prize - so Lan Wangji would get to see and touch something other than skin and bone and scar tissue.
Lan Wangji's fingers trace over his core surgery scar and Wei Wuxian jolts on instinct. Lan Wangji's hand retracts as if it burned, and his eyes are so worried that it makes Wei Wuxian's heart squeeze.
"Did I hurt you?"
Wei Wuxian reaches to touch his face, caressing the soft, jade-like skin, perfect. "No. But don't touch me there anymore, okay?"
"Mn."
Wei Wuxian knows Lan Wangji is a man of his word, so he doesn't ask what that scar is, why it's in such a place, why it's so precise. Wei Wuxian is grateful that he doesn't, so grateful that he sits up, leaning on his elbow, and kisses Lan Wangji again, swallowing a surprised breath and a half moan when their lower bodies brushed against each other.
He doesn't think he will ever grow bored of kissing Lan Wangji, he wants to do it forever and then some. His lips are soft and skilled and he's so amazing even at things like these, how could Wei Wuxian ever want to stop?
He lets himself explore Lan Wangji's robes, fingers meeting the high quality silk and embroidery, and he traces the pattern all the way towards Lan Wangji's lapels, loosening them enough to touch the skin of his chest and collarbones.
Lan Wangji gasps in Wei Wuxian's mouth and nearly rips the fine robes off himself, as if they've offended him. Wei Wuxian excitedly touches the new expanse of his skin, his fingertips catching on Lan Wangji's nipples and he huffs a laugh as he feels Lan Wangji's hands gripping his thighs.
Slowly, Lan Wangji pushes him down again, and Wei Wuxian pliantly follows, separating their lips as he does. Lan Wangji looks at him in that fond, intense way again, and Wei Wuxian feels his body react to that nearly as much as it did when it was being touched and kissed.
"I love you, Wei Ying." Lan Wangji says, breathless, cupping the side of Wei Wuxian's face reverently. "You're everything to me, it's always been you, always will be."
Wei Wuxian feels tears gather in the corners of his eyes. "Lan Zhan... you can't say that so easily..."
"I can." A smile, "I do."
Wei Wuxian feels his tears fall and smiles back. "I lo-"
"Wei Wuxian!!" Granny Wen's shrill voice echoes through the cave and Wei Wuxian's teary eyes snap open in a panic, heart throbbing in a quick, painful rhythm in his ribcage.
"They're here! The cultivators, they're coming!" Granny Wen cries. "We have to hide A-Yuan, quickly!"
Wei Wuxian springs to his feet, ignores the way his body is shaking with the whiplash of reality and rushes out of the cave.
The saccharine sweetness of his dream is lost in the bitterness of reality.
By the time that he's dying, he doesn't remember it anymore at all.
---
The talisman burns to ashes and Lan Wangji's eyes heavily, painfully, slide open. It is seconds later that a breathtaking wave of pain rushes through his body, throbbing cruelly into his back. He feels the blood having seeped through the bandages, wet and sticky, and knows it's going to be torturous when the doctor unwraps them later.
His body feels weak, exhausted, every breath herculean.
The spell wasn't difficult, he would have had no issues with it normally - but his body is injured to the extreme now, bordering death, and his spiritual energy is nearly extinguished.
Still, he had to do this - and he doesn't regret it, even if it kills him. He knows it's cowardly - to confess his feelings in a dream, to offer his beloved an illusion of what he could never bring himself to do - but it was the only way he could think to do it. If he never did it, he would spend the rest of his life agonizing over it, over the what ifs and the self hatred of having never tried it.
He knows Wei Ying will just think it was a senseless dream. He's fine with it - as long as even for just one fleeting moment Wei Ying felt loved and safe and wanted, it was worth it. Even if Wei Ying will forget about it, even if he will brush it off.
Maybe, one day, Lan Wangji will tell him in person.
And if not in this life, maybe in the next one.
