It just occurred to me that both the first and the last time Amy ever saw River was because of the Weeping Angels.

That is both beautiful and sad.

something that does bug me is that river grew up with them as mels, right? and i'm still wavy on how much i like that canon, because i didn't like the writing of most of that episode, but also because of this:

we never see the impact of that. never once later on does it feel like them growing up together impacts or informs how their relationship is later on.

she was your best friend that should impact something and it just doesn't. you grew up together but when mels 'dies' it seems like they treat their best friend as dead and river as a new person which honestly? i'm sort of fine with just because. it would feel WEIRD. i default to it being canon for sake of ease with some changes to personality/lines/other shit but it's still. strange. to me.

My Personal Rating: 8/10

A simple trip to New York in 2012 goes horribly wrong when the Eleventh Doctor's father-in-law, Rory Williams, is sent back to the 1930s by the Weeping Angels. There, he finds that his daughter, River Song, is investigating the Angels, as Manhattan has become their hunting grounds. The Doctor and Amy Pond must find Rory before it is too late, but they soon find that not every point in time can be changed. And here, the Doctor must face the one thing he has been dreading — a final farewell to the Ponds. Source

This story is definitely in my top 5 saddest Doctor Who stories. I cannot watch it without crying. I love any Weeping Angel story, and the Statue of Liberty being one was an awesome choice. I'm sure if I ever go to America, the thought of that will terrify me. The ending bit in the graveyard is just so painful. The Doctor breaking down after Amy and Rory are sapped is just heartbreaking. And poor River having to watch her parents disappear. This episode ranks a 10/10 for sads.
