I have a question. Do you know what the archaeological ethics are for making jewelry out of historical artifacts and then selling it.
I’m an archeology undergraduate student and in my field methods class we did a mini excavation in my professor’s back yard. A historic midden and trash burn. Most of what we found was broken glass and ceramics from the 1920-40s. Our professor let us keep some of the artifacts if we wanted to and I got permission to make a set of earrings.
I wore them to our anthropology end of year party and she suggested selling them at the local farmers market.
I think it would be a fun thing to do but I’m not as familiar with around the treatment historical artifacts as most of what I work with are Fremont.
I’ve seen you talk about historical archaeology a bit and wondered if you had any insight on the ethics.
Hi there, I've been ruminating on this.
I've seen jewelry made by someone who buys thrifted ceramics, breaks them, and then makes jewelry out of the pieces, and I have no real ethical issues there.
The introduction of archaeology into the mix makes me... squirmy. Honestly, if I was your professor I would not have let anyone keep the artifacts because I think it sets a bad precedent re: the temptation to keep the things we find, and of conceptualizing the ownership of the past. This is something archaeology is still struggling with and while I'm sure your professor is lovely, I do not love that they are contributing the the perpetuation of this issue, no matter how "harmless" it may seem.
For me, taking that a step further and selling something made from artifacts crosses the line into something that looks very much like looting. Adding money to the equation changes things drastically.
That being said, legally speaking this was your professor's private property, and if they gave you permission then theoretically you can do whatever you want. Ethically, I think the fact that you are asking this question in the first place is a good indicator that you perhaps already know the answer.
But if you want to take the approach of buying cheap secondhand ceramics, glass bottles, etc. and making them into jewelry I think that would be far more acceptable and less ethically fraught.

Sometimes I wish liking tkling (or tkling as a positive thing) was more normalised
Like could you imagine going up to your friends and just being like "hey today's been kinda shit can you tkl me so my brain shuts up for 5 minutes" ?!
Or your friend doing a favour for you and as a thank you you pin them to the floor and wreck them til they've had their fill ?!
The world would be a far better place with more tkls imo
#he speaks#i think im a bit touch starved recently#we've had a heap of public holidays which has taken up some of my fun wrestly times with my friends#so i think im missing that#and that ofc translates to major tkl needs

i would dig a series like this where the main character sits their doppelgänger down on the couch and lays out ground rules for public outings versus private behavior, respecting each other and recognizing that You have a voice and you are your own person but this was my house and my identity first, prioritizing healthy and upfront communication instead of disembowlment etc
If i had an evil doppelganger i would simply invite it to come live with me. if i can get a wfh job so can it, i'll even let it borrow my resume. Cut our housing costs in half. Double our odds of getting chores done because we each know the other is Watching And Judging if we don't do the thing we said we were gonna do. Way easier to make the bed. Write twice as fast by trading off outlining and drafting. Sure i'd occasionally lose some sleep from holding my bedroom door shut at 3 a.m. while it tries to force its way in to murder me, but what roommate is perfect

I know this is a witchcraft blog, but most of my practice involves simply observing nature as it is, and I think it's something everyone can benefit from. Not necessarily trying to understand it, or judge it, but quietly being present while it exists to do the only thing it's meant to do. To me, expanding my knowledge of the world is witchcraft. And almost conversely, just because we understand how something works doesn't make it any less magical. Sure, you water a seed and it becomes a plant. But that is an organism that eats sunlight and that is magical and I will not be convinced otherwise. When you look up at the Milky Way and it looks back at you, yeah it seems reasonable to point above your head and say something like, "The Gods live in the Heavens. Jupiter is up there, and he's watching over me." The line between literal and metaphorical blurs, and the microcosm reflects the macrocosm.

I literally love Tarquin dragon age. My favorite part of his character is that he's allowed to be like genuinely bitter about everything that's happening. Like of course we get the optimistic strong shadow dragons like Ashur. And it isn't that he doesn't believe in the cause as strongly as the rest of them. But he's pissed in a way that makes him so whole and real. He blames rook for it all, not because he hates rook but he just needs to put this somewhere and rooks right there and fuck you for not saving ashur, it was probably inevitable but he fucking hates it and so it's your fault. And then there Ashur is, dispelling that anger. He yells at you, and then Ashur just says his name and he just diffuses and you realize he's not against you he's just pissed off!!! That "you're not fine. No one is fine."
And he says nasty things to his friend (love) just because he's pissed! It kills me that the SECOND Ashur walks away from the fight, Tarquin sighs and admits he shouldn't have done that. It's messy and makes him so fucking likeable. You know he's pissed at the state of the world, he's pissed he had to join the military, he's so pissed off he doesn't have the energy to change a damn thing because you can't fight a war on all fronts. So he's chosen his war and it's changing tevinter for the better but god damn he just wishes they didn't have to lose everything else to get that.
And anyway amidst a game that I think has a bit of a glossy optimist issue, I think Tarquin is a great representation of that very kind of impotent rage you start to feel at the world when everything is awful and you're trying your hardest and you don't want to be a dick but. Well. Shits fucked. You're gonna keep going but damn if you aren't pissed about it.

Survival During Turmoil
This semester I've been teaching an Ancient Civilizations class for college freshmen—that's how it's listed in the course catalog: Ancient Civilization. But that's not how I've personally been referring to the class.
I've been calling it Ancestral Civilizations and stressing at every turn that, while these civilizations no longer exist, they are not entirely gone. To call them dead or extinct or lost negates the fact that through every time of turmoil and collapse, people have lived.
People lived through the Bronze Age Collapse or the fall of the Mayan Empire or the dissolution of a Chinese dynasty. They got up in the morning and combed their hair and tended their crops and nurtured their children. They were uncertain then just as we are now, and nevertheless, they persisted. So will we.
The archaeological record is full of evidence of that day to day persistence, just like it will be full of ours. Everything you do is important—every moment of joy you snatch or quotidian defiance matters. Your life and your history matters.
Talk to your friends and loved ones. Make something. Come up with plans for the future. Keep living during tumultuous times. Persist.

i will not be gaslit that this is normal cutthroat sports behavior. this is not normal. being cut after two races is not normal. this is less about liam and more about red bull making increasingly desperate decisions that only make their van headed for a cliff drive faster
#what eve said abt helmut and christian being too toddlers fighting for control of a steering wheel. yeah she nailed it no notes#that being said i think liam being done SO dirty will only help him moving forward#especially if he does well in japan. at a track he's raced at many times before#he speaks#f125lb
