So when white people moved into the PNW one of the big markets was brave hunting, because there were so many of the things and they're easy to hunt. But beavers don't make good food so there was just a bunch of beaver fur, so people made hats with that. So now all the hunters, which is an inordinate amount of the population, are wearing these beaver hats, but the process for making hats involved mercury. So all the haberdashers are heavily mercury poisoned which is why the phrase "Mad as a hatter", but the hats still have mercury in them and it's getting into people's scalps so everyone is the PNW is Like That. And Oregon has the most beavers so it gets a reputation. But also there's less construction because the beavers cursed everybody or something, and the wilderness attracts hippies when they become a thing. But the CIA plants weed culture inside the hippy culture so that they can ban weed and then it's open season on the anti war hippies. But since Oregon is now hippy land it is now also Weedland USA, and they inherit the reputation of the mercury poisoned settlers before them. So the reputation is maintained. By if you're not a prude then it doesn't seem all that weird, but if you live there for like a month you start to catch the beaver curse, but if you live there for years it becomes normal.
