Ok guys so I just got back from a youth retreat with my church youth group and oh boy do I have tea/an update on things

First of all this was the most fun I’ve had in a freaking **while**. We were in the mountains (somewhere in the Appalachians, won’t get more specific than that for location privacy even though I don’t actually live near the mountains) at a Christian summer camp place. They’re technically open year round for camps and church groups and retreats and stuff but they also have their own summer camp which I hope to volunteer at during the summer of my senior year. But anyway!!

Saturday afternoon some middle schoolers and my friend’s mom and I went on a hike. We found a really interesting lithic scatter that looks like the foundation of a house or maybe a barn. The others in my group went back, but three of the high school boys and a bunch of the preppy middle school girls were also hiking in their own group. Very loud, wearing bright colors, easy to track. I went after them, cutting through the woods since the trail system isn’t very well defined, and I scared the crap out of them multiple times. At one point I caught the high school boys roleplaying Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and I was just standing in the trail about 200ft away, staring at them. One of them got a photo and I look like Michael Myers in it. After that I just hopped off the trail and doubled back while they continued on, thinking I was ahead of them. I came up behind them and scared the crap out of them again. Then I just picked a random direction off into the woods and walked that way before going back because I heard the high school boys say that the camp was in the complete opposite direction and it was getting dark and none of them had flashlights. So I got them all to properly respect and fear me.

Then, Saturday night, we played manhunt. For those of you who don’t know, manhunt is like hide and seek tag + infection + at night + outside. The more space to hide the better, and we had a giant open field with woods around it plus a lake. I hadn’t known the game was called manhunt until last year when I went on this retreat for the first time, I’d always just called it hide and shrek for reasons, but that’s besides the point. The point is that I got to be seeker and I was low key stalking the other high schoolers and middle schoolers through the woods. I opted to not have a flashlight because it was a full moon and I could see just fine, but a lot of them did have flashlights which made them easy to see. Not to mention this is kind of in a valley so I could hear everything from across the field. And besides, people don’t realize how easy it is to see people in the dark if you know what to look for. Symmetrical shapes, dark blobs that aren’t patterned like the background. I can hear you breathing, you’re not fooling anyone. I. Freaking. Loved it.

The first round I was hiding and no one was finding me because they were all looking on one side of the lake so I started barking and howling like a dog at them and it took them fifteen minutes to find me even though I was standing at the edge of the lake and waving my arms. Later on after I had voluntarily given myself up to the seekers, I ran on all fours at some of the middle school girls I’d saved the lives of earlier and barked at them. Not a therian, but I’m learning quadrobics because it seems fun. Also it’s just kind of fun to bark at people to scare them.

Long story short my youth group fears me and most of them probably know I’m a furry. This same day I also did a few karate forms as part of the talent show. The night before I’d had to pull one of the 6th grade boys out of the firepit because he was climbing on an actively burning log. Inside the firepit. In crocs. Bro come on.

yknow i dont go here but sometimes i gotta go: seriously respect clowns. they have the worst pop culture representation in the world and also the best most thorough honor code. they're just here to be silly little guys who bring joy and are very conscientious about doing so responsibly. let them to their merriment in peace you dont hafta take potshots. i dont go here but like maybe i should, you all seem super chill

you know what boils my blood.

over the last 2 weeks, i've seen countless patients walk into my urgent care center, symptomatic for so many things, refusing to get tested for covid and flu, citing that they don't want to knowingly bring it to their holiday tables. i had a patient tell me, verbatim, "i don't want to test for covid, because i don't want to be the asshole who brings it on a plane."

i understand that - i understand that holidays are times where people look forward to meeting loved ones that they might only see once a year, or where they get a break from the hectic back and forth of their lives.

but here's the thing - whether they get tested or not, they will bring whatever they have to their holiday tables. it's pure recklessness to know that you're sick, and walk into someone else's house spreading the disease.

today, january 2, i saw 91 patients, many of them who have tested positive for covid and flu. many of these patients are the same ones who didn't want testing 3 days ago, until their events were over, and now, they will have to reach out to everyone they know to let them know that they were positive because they were showing symptoms well before their event.

the next week or two? we're going to see many, many more, all people with symptoms that started around christmas. these are the only two viruses we test for rapidly in our office, but they are potent and can be fatal in many people.

so here's why i wrote this post, and maybe it's a little late, but - if you care about your loved ones, please get tested if you know you're sick. it doesn't have to be at a clinic if you don't want it to, because the over-the-counter tests work just fine too (if you test within 5-7 days of symptom onset). just...please don't try to run from the knowledge that you might have covid, because immunocompromised people, elderly people, people with co-morbidities like asthma, pregnancy, diabetes, etc...many of them may not recover. and they may not be sitting at your holiday table in the future because of it.

Personally I've never been a fan of the "magic is a beast that needs to be tamed" metaphor. Magic is more like the ocean: powerful, terrifying, capable of unbridled force. But at the same time, it is gentle, warm, the lifeblood of millions of people. The folk who know the ocean know you cannot harness it's force, you must work within or around it, lest it destroy you. Similarly, magic is great and terrible and gentle and kind, all at once. And those who work with it need to work WITH it, not reign over it. Because the primordial forces have no rules about biting the hand that feeds you.

THERE'S SO MANY CRYING PEOPLE IN STORY CARDS LATELY!!! SPECIALLY LIGHT USERS!! I AM!!! SCARED!!!! bc so far we got Lilia and Sebek in the beginning book 7.... so at the end.... so we're missing story Silver... and Malleus is the one with less cards, so they might add one for him... but... the tears... ego.... YES I am ALSO like...90-95% convinced that we're going to be getting a story card for Silver once we wrap around back to diasomnia. 👀 especially because the way things are going, Silver will be the only character whose dream we haven't seen -- yet???? -- and that just. y'know. makes me wonder!

although I do think it would be VERY funny if he got a story card and the groovy was just "regular Silver except with one beautiful single crystal tear". this is actually a lot coming from him.

(he used up all his emotion yelling at a baby that one time, there's none left for a proper groovy-level cry.)
