I'm caught up with manga rn so I wanted to share a few thoughts (ramblings) on egghead arc zolu too. first, this convo after the crew leave wano and find out abt what's gone down in the reverie, and wrt to vivi specifically,
I do agree with some stuff I've seen about how using ace here as an example was not exactly the best one since we know how that ended up. that said, I think it's lowkey sweet that zoro still remembers so clearly what luffy said back then and well, he's not entirely wrong.
as I've mentioned in other posts before, zoro takes the crew and his own role in it very seriously. these are his companions, his friends and family I daresay, and part of his duty as both crewmate and friend includes keeping them all check and safe whenever it's needed. especially luffy, as we've seen in different occasions (water 7, thriller bark, punk hazard, wano, just to name some arcs with relevant moments related to this). storming into marijoa, THE world government/navy stronghold, without any information and/or plan whatsoever is a bad idea all around.
luffy may be impulsive and stubborn at times, but he isn't really an idiot and he knows zoro's right even if he doesn't like it. hence this:
ngl I love how grumpy luffy is at zoro here. these two are usually on a similar wavelength but there are key moments where their approach to things differ, and it ultimately works bc it's kind of... a complementary thing. making up for what the other lacks or needs to hear in those moments. I believe they bicker relatively less than other straw hats do in comparison (precisely bc of how similar they are imo) but it's funny when it actually happens. I can so easily picture luffy here fuming and stomping like a brat also being seconds away from asking for a divorce
this one's perhaps on a more delulu note on my part, but I like that zoro brought up ace in specific bc he was there both times when ace and sabo asked the crew to take care of luffy. it was curious to me that in the former case, zoro was kinda shown with this "!" reaction sign and later when it came to sabo in dressrosa, he was the one to fondly point out he sounded just like ace did in alabasta (and the "!" is back).
(the fact that sabo handed zoro luffy's vivre card there also lives in my mind rent free btw)
so yeah. zoro's definitely not one to mess around when it comes to the crew and luffy's safety, though he may get a handful of grumpy straw hats (captain included!) for it.
another thing, and do bear with me bc I might be reaching once again is... the break up flashback between shanks and buggy. I pretty much forgot to make a post about water 7/enies lobby zolu bits (too busy crying over robin, I admit) but this actually reminded me of it.
the context and personalities involved differ from each other, yeah, but I believe this shows exactly how easily it could've been for luffy and zoro to have a bad ending of sorts under different circumstances.
I can't say for sure how much of whiskey peak was intended to affect zoro and luffy's relationship later in the manga (I personally find some parts of it kinda goofy), but it at least served as an early example that they're not immune to suffering from misunderstandings and miscommunication issues. though unlike shanks/buggy, the fact that they're more similar than they're different and their differences tend to complement each other's likely works more in zoro and luffy's favor. still,
if luffy hadn't listened to zoro here - if he'd failed to stay true to what's expected of him as the captain (and being the captain is related to his journey to become the pirate king), to stay true to the kind of man zoro believes him to be and that he chose to join in that marine base, we could've had a similar scenario to shanks and buggy's imo. more so when you consider that zoro's as headstrong as luffy is, that he's been mistaken for the captain and now has turned out to have the color of the supreme king too. hell, zoro used to be a bounty hunter, is still called the pirate hunter. I don't believe it'd be easy for zoro to leave despite what he says, or that they'd become enemies per se, but it isn't (or wasn't) out of the realm of possibilities. zoro has admitted that he sees no point in being a pirate unless he's part of luffy's crew as well.
as it is, the fact that luffy values zoro's imput and listens to him whenever the need arises is such an important part of their relationship. as loyal as zoro may be, as great as his displays of that loyalty are, they only exist bc luffy cares for him just as much and has earned them through his actions. I love it!
last thing before this gets too long is this:
the mobile app's pic upload limit is my enemy so I can't share it but I also liked the page before this one, where luffy asks zoro if he needs some help, to which zoro tells him to focus on kizaru instead.
this is such a great showcase of how much they've grown in terms of strength - that zoro can take on one of pre-timeskip luffy's strongest foes now, and that luffy himself is no longer unable to do anything against enemies like kizaru. and yknow, I find it special that luffy can go against him now considering kizaru was the one who almost killed zoro in sabaody - one of those instances in which luffy was genuinely worried, upset and feared for zoro's safety to the point he was actually all teary when rayleigh managed to save him.
I would've liked to see zoro's reaction to nika!luffy since he was knocked out in wano when it first happened, but I suppose he's already seen the wanted poster and his lack of reaction now isn't that out of character probably. godly power up or not, that's still his silly gremlin captain ig. can't wait to see what else is in store for these guys in this arc and onwards!
#zolu#tp#long post#back here again folks#this one is especially dedicated to the lovely anon who sent me an ask abt how they enjoyed reading my posts#and to everyone who's liked them: love y'all#zolu in my mind rent free as always#jay reads op

OKAY
I think we need to discuss something that I’ve literally never heard any other practitioners talk about but I think it’ll immediately clear up A LOT of confusion! This is obviously my own upg so take it with as much validity as you please.
When doing any kind of work with any kind of deity, you really need to understand the concepts of archetypes and syncretism.
Religion, faith, and mythology, it’s all a big mess. Our clumsy archaic human language and our tendency to destroy and distort information means that the ancient world is really, to our modern understanding, A LOT (and I mean a LOT) of hypothesizing.
We often use the same words to describe different concepts, mix up names, combine names, and misunderstand each other. Such is the nature of humanity.
Theology is always fluid. Different entities have different cultural associations, some major entities or characters are even shared among multiple groups of people. Syncretism means that groups of people develop their ideas with the influence of other groups of people, though shifted to make sense for their personal experience.
My favourite thing in the world is when different religions share stories- viewing history from totally different perspectives- Retelling the same events through the scope of their theology.
This is why we have archetypes. There are many goddesses of love and sex that are associated with the planet that is commonly known as Venus. Why these archetypes emerge in the way they do? That’s up for you to debate with yourself.
The question of whether Aphrodite is Astarte or Ishtar or Lucifer or Helel or Eosphoros or Hesperus is not a question that can be answered entirely objectively. It can never be proven and it can never be disproven. Because sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes the answer is definitely no, and sometimes it’s really hard to tell.
The way that we all experience the energy that is “Venus” is going to be different. If she definitely feels like the same energy as Astarte to you, then that could be the case. There’s no objective authority on reality or faith. There is no reason why the findings of 1000 year old magis are more legitimate than yours. Study, learn, experiment.
I like to imagine it similar to colors. We all agree that wavelengths between 620 to 750 nm are red. We have silly little cones in our eyes that work with our brains to turn information into color. But we all understand that there are thousands of shades of red, and some people can’t even see red. Do you see where I’m going? I hope this makes sense.
Because of the way that we interact with reality, there are as many Aphrodite as there are people who believed in Aphrodite- and this is true for every God (at least in my silly little opinion).
There are as many variations in her energy as there are variations of people who follow her.
I try to scope this around what Jophiel told me once. YHWH created him, sometimes. But not at the moment when I was talking to him. When I asked him if Lucifer was the Satan of Christianity he said “sometimes” as well. It depends. It all depends. That’s the beauty of this weird wacky thing that we do.
Anyways,
I don’t know how else to write this but to say some people aren’t compatible with every archetype lol. This is totally okay though, it’s not anyone’s fault! It’s just like … spiritual chemistry. Alchemy? Stay with me!
Nature has laws. If you try to push against these laws you will experience difficulty and suffering. ☹️
Nature creates certain compounds. Stable compounds thrive 🙂 and unstable compounds explode ☹️. Interactions create products and outputs. When two or more elements that are not compatible are introduced they may have a volatile reaction.
I will not claim to know how divinities operate. This is all just my silly billy pondering. But I do know for fact, that at least in my experience, certain entities that share the same address interact with different people in different ways- and some entities will only respond to you under a specific face. Some entities will share faces, and some won’t even respond to you at all.
I’ll use a couple personal examples for reference.
When I first started working with Prince Cerberus, I addressed him using his Goetic name Naberius, as recorded in the Lesser Key of Solomon. I used his sigil and addressed that name.
One of the first things that came through crystal clear was his request to not be called Naberius. He made it very clear to me that he wanted to he called Cerbere or Cerberus, or that I could make up a personal name, but never should I use Naberius. He did not give a reason but he was firm on it.
Now, does this mean that we all can’t use the name Naberius and that we should all blacklist the name? NO! and this doesn’t mean that anyone who works with Naberius is disrespecting Cerberus!!!
For whatever reasons, I don’t know why, my Naberius is Cerberus. I don’t know if Naberius and Cerberus are the same entity or not, I just know that when I think of Naberius I get forwarded to Cerbere. I’m still able to use Naberius’ sigil, but I always get Cerberus.
That might not be true for you. That might not even be logical. That’s just the way that my spirit interacts with that spirit.
I’ve been a long time admirer of Lord Hermes. I approached him and tried desperately to gain his favor, but he refused 💔💔. He made it pretty clear that it wasn’t going to happen through a few ways, and since then he’s repeatedly rejected me…
lol 🥲
I was confused about that for a while, until I started getting hints towards Lord Mercury.
I can’t explain why, I have no idea what the real reason behind this is, but I feel extremely compatible with Mercury, but not with Hermes, like at all. Their energy feels quite separate and different to me. My Mercury isn’t quick like silver, he’s actually quite slow and contemplative.
I was bummed to not be able to establish a “work” relationship with Hermes but it’s probably for the best. Mercury is an excellent teacher.
What I mean to say through all of this rambling is that these things are not concrete. My Astaroth is only Astarte sometimes. Sometimes they feel very similar, sometimes they feel very distinct.
It’s important to remember that the Gods are not one thing, but many things at once. The answers to these questions are all variable. Only you can find the answers for yourself.
If you read this far you’re a real one 🫡

To share another thought on the Folding Ideas video I Don't Know James Rolfe from my last post, while I enjoyed it a ton I do think its core "meta" element fails to reach the heights it could. It is never made that explicit so I am making a subjective read here, but essentially while most of the content of the video is textually about James Rolfe, there are dozens of moments where Dan performs actions that mimic or parallel James, culminating in his own parodic angry video game review as the finale. The idea is something of a "there but for the grace of god I go" point, that perhaps all youtubers, and Dan specifically, are too close for comfort to Rolfe's reality of limited creative options and a hostile fanbase clinging to the past .
But I can't really say for sure! Because he is very adverse to making this concrete enough for the audience.
At times the visual parallels are incredibly direct. There is one moment, where Dan is explaining the real skill and craft of being an internet clown on demand, where he mimics Rolfe's style of rant to explain it while projected AVGN videos that were looping in the background flash over his own body:
And it really works, the meaning shines through; it is a moment you can see back through time where the idea for this shot was, spiritually, the impetus for the film, that this idea must have come to him and he built the essay around making it happen.
Other visual parallels are less explicit; when the parody sequence starts, Dan - who has built a 1/12th scale recreation of the Rolfe's "video game basement" aka studio set in order to "understand" him like normal people do - represents himself in that room via a tiny hand puppet
Which is cute if, like probably most people, know him as the guy who makes videos about NFTs or Qanon. But close to a decade ago, when he was first making ~20 minute media analysis takes, he represented himself on screen with a wooden puppet like this:
It is even like the same color, I am confident this is intentional, it is saying "yeah this could have been an alt version of me; I was not so far from this".
All these symbols function to make the emotional impact; but an emotional impact in service of...what? So in the essay he discusses the film Wavelength, a 1967 avant garde film that is almost entirely composed of filming the side of a room with minimal camera movement while actions occur around it. It is a movie that never gives you a meaning, and therefore you must project meaning into it, bring yourself to the table. That makes sense for Wavelength, and the aggressive cinematography of I Don't Know James Rolfe - which is stellar to be clear - is making the film out to be sort of its own personal Wavelength for YouTube.
But then we go back to that text, which is over an hour of Dan directly talking to the camera about a real person. It is incredibly concrete and detailed, with explicit points being made over and over. And through what those explicit points reveal... I don't think Dan Olsen is like James Rolfe! Does he have an hostile fanbase trapped in nostalgia? Do people acuse him of being cucked by his bitch wife? He has evolved as a filmmaker, intensely so, he does things completely differently than Rolfe does and completely differently from how he himself used to. He doesn't have a shitty biography that self-outs his own creative narcissism, he isn't obsessed with remaking his own childhood films - I am pretty sure as a kid he had never heard of NFTs, they didn't really exist! The final line of the film is "maybe you aren't a filmmaker either" - but idk, Dan, I kinda think you are! If documentarians can be filmmakers you have to qualify.
Now I'm not a fool, I understand that the film could be suggesting these are differences of degrees and not kind; that Dan is equally "trapped in the room" making vlogs for the net, just with more outward trappings of success. But, in the ruthless specificity and detail of his treatment of Rolfe...this film cannot be Wavelength. I am not capable of forging my own meaning from the pieces, he connected way too many of them. This is the trap of avant-garde; you are tempted to help the audience, but once you try to answer some of the questions, it forces the hand of the rest, they all have to fit into that schema. And the film is just too coy with Dan's own parallel life for me to figure the schema out. I make my guesses and I lack confidence in them, they feel "contradicted" by the text.
More detail would have been the easier path; less detail and more symbolic expression would have been the harder path. But right now the balance is just a bit too out of whack for it to come fully together.
#This of is the inverse of “damning with faint praise” - a true compliment of the craft through my exacting critique#folding ideas

What happened to Liv? 😭 I know you two are close I can’t find her blog anymore 😭😭😭😭
Hey anon! Thank you for reaching out. Liv decided to deactivate or delete her blog after all the hate anons she received. It was a pretty pointless debate, if you'd even call it that at this point, with her getting very vile and personally attacking anons to the point where she felt this wasn't a happy place to be sharing her thoughts, to which I absolutely agree with.
Since you've brought up the topic that was the shortest answer I could give you above. If you are interested in reading more I'll expand below the cut, as I have a lot to say.
This whole thing started about a fictional character, Michael Gavey, who hasn't appeared on screen or will appear for 64 seconds and sparked a debate on whether you should write or read or plainly consume fanfiction about a character who hasn't been properly defined.
Now it could have remained that. A debate and I personally see things from both povs
This is a post I agree with as a writer.
Here
I'm an amateur, I've just begun writing but my style or whatever I'm finding, matches the one mentioned above. I need visual cues and I need to see and analyse a character more if I ever consider writing about him so yes, I personally would not write about a character I haven't completely analysed or who hasn't appeared on screen yet.
As a reader however, I have a different perspective. I love spoilers. I like knowing things beforehand and going through them in my head before reading a book or consuming media. Its fun to go "oh what I pictured turned out to be quite close to what's being shown here". The accuracy or near accuracy gives me a boost. I'm happy when I feel like I analysed or thought about a character similar to what I see later on. It shows me I understood the creator and what they were trying to portray even before seeing it. Gives me a "we are maybe on the same wavelength" feeling and thats fantastic.
That's why I can see a similar perspective to authors and creators already writing fanfiction for him before they've seen the movie. They have an image in their head and they want to be creative and show you how wonderful their imagination is. What's wrong with that? I have many moots who've written lovely stories that I want to read and I probably will.
Coming back to the point, what I don't understand is why people decided that these were such drastically opposite views and decided to sling hatred at whoever didn't conform to their idea of consumption and creation of media.
Why was there a need to send hate to a creator who said she didn't want to read or write as yet just because she wanted to get to know him better before doing so?
Why was there a need to harass writers who wanted to write and express their feelings being all gatekeepy over their work instead?
And why was there a need to constantly continue this anon responding and giving them traction all over again. It should have been shot down long before a fellow creator was forced to leave this site for good. We're all friends here why can't we be civil and respect each other's opinions.
A post stating your preference is not calling the other out. It is simply that, stating your preference and we as a fandom need to stop clinging to crumbs and overanalyzing stuff like this and use them for call out games.
Look at his pretty face and analyse those crumbs instead.
This is supposed to be fun, please continue to letting it be fun for others too.
That's all.

I was playing around with the idea that maybe Alder isn't actually even that powerful as a witch, but reviewing the evidence in the show does point more towards her being at least above average. First of all, we have to consider if "power" is a meaningful concept. Raelle's case seems to indicate that, yes, it's not just about producing wavelength patterns (as the Camarilla are able to reproduce technologically), there is a magical depth of capability that affects the reach of Work. Two people with the same vocal control will produce different scales of effect depending on their power. Jem Bellweather can create storms of a certain magnitude by herself, which would require collaboration by less powerful witches. (Although, there is a bit of the show playing coy about power levels due to budget constraints. Bridey mentions Razor Hail being thrown at them by enemy witches in the Andes, but by S3 Petra says that no Bellweather has been able to pull Razor Hail off. Maybe Razor Hail is normally only a collaborative Work? Ditto for the dual tornados seen in the pilot. ) Going back to Alder, we have a couple of points of comparison. First, both Alder and Petra affect the weather with their moods, causing storms to brew and thunder rumbles when angry. Second, we have Alder herself calling Khalida powerful, and the two of them share being First Song Stewards (as well as with Jem/Abigail). In 1x10, though, what we see is Alder mostly using the collaboration way of being powerful, utilizing the coordination of the Biddies to pull off highly complex Work. This is why I played with the idea that maybe Alder wasn't even that powerful by herself, but just rode off of the novelty value of revealing Work to the public at all, and then just having increasing experience advantage over time, and then the Biddies giving her further edge. But if she unleashed her piece of the First Song on the scaffold, then it probably was a truly powerful storm that she unleashed. Still, there is something to be said for the fact that power wouldn't really be the thing that carried her for 300+ years. I once compared Alder to a sports team coach already, and that would remain apt. In a basketball AU, Alder would have to be good enough to make it into the NBA and a regular, but that doesn't mean she had to be one of the headlining stars during that time before becoming a coach of a legendary roster afterwards. It would be more about her ability to direct. To see what the strategy and tactics should be, to make the troops under her understand that vision, and to cultivate those troops' potential in order to execute that vision to the best of their ability. To overcome cultural conventions around secrecy in favor of standardization and optimization of the Work with the most utility, developing the best training and educational programs to outfit the troops and officers. And more on the admin side of things, it would be about her ability to handle the politics, both within her own organization and with the external parties. Not just in fending off challengers for her position, but in ways that don't compromise the military operations. The 1700s were already beyond the time of generals leading as warriors from the front (although witch powers complicate that transition, of course), where a leader's resource management ability was the better indication of success than how they would do in a combat bracket. That's why I'm a bit sad that the show ultimately shoots down my idea of an Alder who isn't actually that powerful, but nonetheless becomes the greatest witch of all time because she was able to inspire the real heavy hitters to follow her command, to organize and maintain a large institution. (And then developing the power hacks she needed over time to stop bluffing in the field.)

Hi girl...
I hope you are doing great......
I wanted to ask about my juno in scorpio sign in 3rd house in scorpio degree (20 degree)...
Hello girl!
you might have 2, 3 marriages or very serious, long-term, committed relationships
you might want a partner that is equal to you whatever that equal means to you
you want someone on the same intellectual, emotional, educational wavelength
you are posessive, territorial and easily jealous
you might have a spouse with a health issue (a chronic one or just very serious) or even overuse of substances
you might work with your spouse
your you will start a project or side business together
you will enjoy travelling
you want well-educated, open-minded partner
you understand that being in a romantic relationship with you is A CHOICE, conscious choice that one makes
you want charming, sweet, harmonious, peaceful partner
your partner could be a bit of a flirt, but also very respectful
you want a special connection only between you two (you could even get jealous if you have children and you partner pays more attention to them than you or something similar)
you like someone bold, decisive, strong and physically fit
you might be attracted to looks of others, can be a bit superficial so be mindful of that
you might dream of a perfect wedding
your spouse can make you feel anxious or that you start to worry too much as a result of knowing them
You can also find my post just about Scorpio Juno.
💔 SCORPIO JUNO 💔
-first of all, they are all really unique individuals with a complex character, they are far from superficial, really engimatic personalities
-the types to get a tattoo with your name, because you most likely transformed a part of them (or at least this is how they view it)
-most likely has "first thought, best thought" mentality, therefore they will think that the first person they dated/married was actually the most likely the "right" one for them
-they have this thing with surname... if you take their surname, they will really feel proud of you and want "showcase" it in a way. And I think one celebrity example that we can all observe in real life is the Biebers. When Hailey Baldwin married Justin Bieber (who is a Scorpio Juno), she started wearing Bieber necklace, jackets with the name on it
-but the other side of it, I noticed, is that when things get worse in marriage/committed relationship with Scorpio Juno and if for example there is a divorce, they will definitely WON'T like you keeping their surname or anything associated with them. They only like the idea of sharing when actually together.
-they usually circle between these 3 (or more) ex partners they had. Has a tendency to go back to previous ones, if the current one is not working for them, just because "they have so much shared history".
-Yeah...did I mention this Scorpio Juno is not that keen on getting to know new people and accepting them in their inner circle, that's why they prefer choosing people from the past, that they have history with
-they can be really magnetic, charming, hard to resist and just tempting, very impressionable
-partner of Scorpio Juno probably thought at least once to get back with them at some point in their life
-this goes more into taboo side of it, some of them are prone to be either chain smokers or rely too heavily on an escaptistic substance, however they all weirdly EXCEL at sports . They usually really perfect a craft of certain sport that they pick and are really good at 3, 4 different sports too
-they take an end of a relationship really really serious, almost like an end of an era for them
-you probably heard that get jealous and territorial of their partner right? Not so much from what I observed. It manifests more as being jealous of relationships of other people. They really compare their relationship to that of others.
Keep hydrated,

I think you have some great theories but some require so much explanation to make it work and are buried in references and outside sources, we almost get away from what we know - SJM makes whatever lore she pulls from her own. Some are so complex and very specific to the way you analyze, we can't possibly expect SJM to have been on the same wavelength as you. Considering how often SJM retcons and contradicts herself in interviews, I just don't think she's putting in as much work as some fans do with some theories. Yes, she has plot twists and turns, but they aren't overly layered and she's not the best as creating two demensional villains either. She's also made some questionable writing decisions that so many fans never could've predicted. Like, I remember all the wild theories for KOA & ACOSF and none were remotely close to what she planned in terms of plot development aside from the obvious, Nessian as endgame. I think at best, the theories that do come to fruition are the simple ones even causal readers can pick up. I think you have some creative ideas, but I think we are expecting too much from SJM.I think she's a simple gal, who loves writing romance. Will you be disappointed if none of your theories come to be true? If none come true, I hope it doesn't stop you from expressing your thought and blogging, there's so many other fandoms who would appreciate you in their corner.
This is a valid point, so thank you for bringing it up!
I think first and foremost, it goes without saying that most SJM fan theories will (likely) be wrong in some capacity - my own included. I am definitely aware of this, which is why I am intentional with my wording (ie. I will never say "I figured it out!", or try and present my theories as canon facts). For me personally, theorising isn't about trying to be "right" (as that's pretty much impossible); instead, it's about pondering all the different possibilities that SJM could take in future books, and then sharing these possibilities within a community.
As for expecting too much from SJM - I am undecided. I do see where you are coming from, and I especially agree with KOA; a perfect example of this was Elide's character - SJM hinted several times that Elide had Blackbeak blood (which spurred on the creation of many incredible theories), but then it ultimately lead to nothing...? However, I also know that Merrill's hypothesis in ACOSF (about the 11 different dimensions, or as many as 26) is a direct reference to String Theory - and then the Harp, with the 26 strings, represents this. To me, this does indeed suggest that SJM is thinking about her worlds (and how they interact) beyond the surface level.
This is also why I often reference outside sources in my theories (such as mythology or folklore), because to me it is clear that SJM derives so much inspiration from these same sources. For example, Helion appears to be named after "Helios" (Greek god of the sun), and Thesan appears to be named after "Thesan" (Etruscan goddess of dawn). Knowing that SJM is connecting her characters in this way lends itself to questioning the other remaining characters - for example, why is Hunt named after Orion; a famous hunter in Greek mythology? Why is Mor named after The Morrigan; a famous war goddess/shapeshifter/banshee in Celtic mythology? Does it mean something? (Or, are you right, and SJM is just choosing names at random?)
So, I guess I can admit that I do have high expectations of SJM going forward, and that my theories reflect that. However, if SJM does indeed opt for more "basic" storylines in her future books (ie. much less of a crossover than we are anticipating), then it wouldn't be the first time that my theories have failed to account for that. In the past, I have actually posted theories for two well known TV/book series, and both went "viral" within those respective fandoms (I still remember when Reese Witherspoon posted a news article about my theory to her instagram story lmao). However, both times, the author went for a much more "obvious" ending, and as a result, I was on the receiving end of fandom backlash (that my thoughts were too "outlandish," or that my expectations were too high).
But, that's still part of the fun. Honestly, my one true goal is to write my own fantasy series - that way, I am free to include as many "outlandish" twists, turns, and ideas as I wish !! :)

do you think it's strange that i feel such a sense of solidarity with you? i feel like we're both more than the sum of our parts but people will often only refer to us as what we've been explained as, if that makes sense. it's been really irritating to me lately to see people interacting with only this or that part of who i am. it's to the extent that the other parts of "me" (or even the other "me" or "me's" plural) feel like they're dead weight. it's very lonely, like being more of a mask or a doll than a varied consciousness.
(1) If "what you are" is indeed a "sum of your parts", it is strange indeed.
I was surprised at first to learn the full extent of my "mask" / "doll" / "variations on the theme of'me'" / "clones of me and my thoughts and beliefs and memories and experiences and everything I've ever cared about" / "self" phenomenon, because it always seems to me like that is the simplest explanation of the situation -- just the fact that I have a large number of thoughts and ideas that I am unable to express because they depend on all sorts of implicit and unstated values, preferences, experiences, memories, etc., that may or may not be shared by others, and so on. That is so clearly true -- it is as if I have had a whole "set" of clothes I can wear in a variety of contexts, and they make it hard for me to just drop them and change outfits every time I switch from work to home to date night.
(I'm sure it's not the only explanation, but that's my intuition, and why I've never seen a satisfying account that seemed to explain the whole phenomenon.)
Also, there seem to be many people who see many of their parts as having some sort of continuity, or at least coherence, even in situations where this is not actually justified, while to me it seems to be less a question of continuity than about many independent ideas living together in the same space. This is especially true in the case of many of the ideas I am thinking about at this very moment, but it is very noticeable that a large portion of my brain is occupied by thinking about the fact that I will probably never become a mathematician. I think of this as a distinct "sub-personality" who exists on a different wavelength from the rest of me. If that is true of other people, it seems like a natural part of the complexity of the human condition.
(2) I'm not sure I fully understand your statement of frustration, although I am glad that you feel a sense of solidarity with me at least. If I can paraphrase it: "many people are interested in 'parts' in the simple, superficial way where the parts seem to be separate people, but these parts are really more like constituents in the same organism, or elements in an universe (or like members of an equation). People seem to think this can be used to explain something about how we experience the world, but really it should just be used as a model of how we experience the world. When a part isn't doing what you'd expect it to do, just put it back in the model and see if it makes a difference." It sounds like you are looking for something that explains the whole experience of consciousness, with all of its subtleties and peculiarities, rather than just "parts that you can assign in a simplified way." If you could do that, then I think people would think of this as a strange "substance theory of consciousness," and you would have a point.
(3) If you are looking for a simpler way to explain things, you could try to explain to people what it is like to be a mathematician. They are "more of the same." I think it is possible to do this in a way that doesn't just amount to "look at the facts" and "you are a mathematician if you look at the facts"; in fact I think it has to involve a certain "story telling" / "rhetoric." I have never found this approach very satisfying. It seems like there is something about the structure of mathematics that makes it very suited for this kind of explanation, and I would like to try this with other areas of the human experience that I have been feeling (for reasons beyond the scope of this ask) like the same kind of thing as math, though I don't know if it would be more "suited" than math. For now I think of this approach as an "exercise" of my imagination / "talent." If you're willing to try the exercise, I could describe it to you.
Now, you are an aspiring mathematician who has never taken a math class, or indeed anything except English classes in school. Suppose you want to talk to a math major about why mathematicians tend to think of their mathematical models, even in complicated or formal areas of study, as if they were the "same" as the reality they describe. So you ask him: what is it that makes a mathematical construction "do its job," and what is the "job" even supposed to be? Or, more generally: why do you think a mathematical construction can produce predictions at all?

Chapter 2: Parting Ways
Narrated by Jiang Beixi.
Narrator: On our ride to the hotel, I sort out our materials and plan filming details while Vivian chats with the tour guide.
Vivian: You’re a local, right?
Guide: Yeah! A local through and through. I know a lot about my hometown.
Vivian: So your ancestors are from here, too, huh? Interesting! How long have you been working as a tour guide?
Guide: Not that long. It’s an on-and-off thing. I only take up this job when my family needs cash.
Vivian: Oh. Does that mean that people here mostly work part-time?
Guide: You mean like... Is it easy to hire someone for just a few hours?
Guide: You’re in luck! There are always people on the plaza looking for odd jobs. Tell them you know me and you’ll get a discount.
Vivian: Perfect! I knew you’d be the right person to ask. Thanks a lot!
Narrator: Why do we need to hire part-time workers? What exactly does she want?
Narrator: Before I can voice my confusion, Vivian leans closer, whispering into my ear.
Vivian: I’ve got it all sorted out! You said you want to film poachers in action, right? I have an idea...
Vivian: We can grab a few part-timers and guns and set up a scene on the prairie tomorrow. Efficient and effective.
Jiang Beixi: That would make our footage fake. I do not condone fake news.
Narrator: I know people stage their scenes sometimes, but I certainly didn’t expect this from my own colleague.
Narrator: Vivian seems surprised and genuinely confused at my reaction.
Vivian: How will it be fake? Poaching is a real thing that happens, and we’re just showing the audience that, right?
Jiang Beixi: Perhaps, but my camera is for capturing authentic scenes only.
Vivian: How long will we have to stake out for that? And we’ll only be spending a few days here. What if no poachers turn up?
JIang Beixi: If none turn up, we’ll just have to do with no footage.
Vivian: Fine, then. You’ll be in charge of the filming schedule from now on.
Narrator: I simply shrug. Judging from the good-natured annoyance on her face, Vivian now knows not to cross me.
Narrator: Neither of us speaks the rest of the way to the hotel, and the tour guide warns us to always stick together for safety purposes.
Narrator: Unable to wander alone, Vivian and I are stuck in our shared room, sorting out our belongings in awkward silence.
Choose either “Won’t it be awkward to try shooting now?” or “It’s too difficult a partnership to try to make work.”
If “awkward,” ...
You: Will the awkwardness between you two affect the filming?
Narrator: It’s manageable, at least for me.
If “difficult,” ...
You: Maybe you two are just not meant to work together. You should go separate ways.
Narrator: If we split up now, we won’t be able to film according to the plan. Let me see what she thinks.
--
Narrator: I take the initiative to speak after I’ve taken care of my luggage.
Jiang Beixi: Are you up for the trip to the prairie tomorrow?
Vivian: ...Of course.
Narrator: She flashes me a smile, which is more than enough for me. I nod at her.
Jiang Beixi: Then pack up your things. It might be a while before we get back to town since there’s a lot of footage we need.
Vivian: How long will we be there?
Jiang Beixi: A few months, I think. I’ve got the schedule all sorted out according to the wildlife activity. Read it when you have time.
Vivian: A few months?
Narrator: She yelps. It’s my turn to be surprised.
Vivian: I thought we’d be here for less than a week. My travel-sized sunscreen won’t last that long!
Jiang Beixi: We won’t be able to film a thing in just a week.
Vivian: Ahhh, no way... Alright, you can go on with your filming. I’m heading home!
Jiang Beixi: Are you sure?
Narrator: Vivian flashes me a wistful look and takes out her phone to book her plane ticket.
Choose either “Failed, indeed” or “Not going to salvage it?”
If “failed,” ...
You: Guess it didn’t work out after all.
Narrator: That can’t be helped. We’re on different wavelengths. I’ll just have to focus on my filming schedule.
If “salvage,” ...
You: Won’t you ask her to stay?
Narrator: I did what I could. We’re on different wavelengths. I’ll just have to focus on my filming schedule.
--
Narrator: Just as I’m about to leave the next morning, Vivian pokes her head out of the bathroom, a bit jittery.
Vivian: Where are you going?
Jiang Beixi: Filming, of course. Why?
Vivian: Uh... the next flight back to Apple Federation is five days away...
Vivian: Can you... stay with me for a few more days?
Narrator: She keeps glancing at the tightly shut windows.
Narrator: If she’s that worried about someone climbing in through the windows, she can just keep them locked, right?
Jiang Beixi: My filming schedule is quite tight. I need to start today.
Narrator: I continue putting on my shoes and get ready to head out, but she rushes over and grabs me.
Vivian: Wait! I’ll come with you. I have time to spare anyway, and you could use the help.
Narrator: I shoot her a puzzled look. What help could she offer me? I shrug and pick up my equipment.
Jiang Beixi: Get ready, then. We leave in 5 minutes.

5 Reasons Why You Should Start Or Join A DJ Crew
DJing with others has so many benefits. Whether you’re in a crew of battle, resident or streaming DJs, the brotherhood that comes with getting creative with other like minded people can have lasting impacts on your life!
DJing with others has so many benefits. Whether you’re in a crew of battle, resident or streaming DJs, the brotherhood that comes with getting creative with other like minded people can have lasting impacts on your life!
Share & Build Together
We live in a time in the DJ scene where DJs tend to feel isolated because the principal way we communicate amongst each other is through our smartphones. But when you’re physically surrounded by other DJs, practicing is more fun because you get to SHARE & BUILD TOGETHER. Inspiration to be creative is heightened when you get to develop your ideas with the help from your peers.
Community
Collaborations with DJs who are at a similar age and skill level, leads to the evolution of COMMUNITY. Becoming a part of any music ensemble will almost always indirectly lead to you discovering unexpected friends. With that, comes a camaraderie that grows into a support system you can rely on as a creative. Especially when you experience mental blocks or other hardships.
Mastermind Principle
When the ideas just aren’t flowing, you can always practice with one of your DJ partners. Shortkut’s idea for the “Strobe” pattern came to him during a practice session with Rhettmatic. Short could not figure out how to invert my “Swing” pattern and could only flip the pattern linearly. He was so frustrated, he wasn’t aware that his approach, although different, sounded dope! It wasn’t till Rhettmatic stopped him and said, “Short, are you listening to what you’re doing though? It sounds really cool. Keep it,” that Short realized he was on to something different from what I was doing. When you develop that degree of synchronization with a practice partner, training takes on a much deeper meaning than sharpening your skills. You’re helping each other work through mistakes that help both DJs grow!
youtube
Healthy Competition
When you’re in a DJ crew, the motivation you feel to practice more increases exponentially. Even if you don’t have the luxury of physically surrounding yourself with other DJs, I strongly encourage Brolic Army DJ School students to participate in our quarterly challenges. After all, your ultimate goal as a DJ is to be able to play music confidently in front of a crowd, and if you’re a DJ in training, the most efficient way to breed confidence is by putting yourself in situations where you’re interacting with other DJs in a competitive sense. This will push you to train when you lack the self motivation to!
youtube
Memories
Beyond acquiring new skill sets, DJing with others offers an opportunity to make memories. You also learn life skills that bring benefits that have no expiration date. I speak from experience. So, whether you end up forming your own DJ crew or joining one, make the effort to get together with other DJs. It’s a gratifying experience. On many levels!
youtube
For these 5 reasons (and many others) DJing with others who are on a similar wavelength is important. The potential good that could come from interacting with other DJs is infinite.

In today’s world, where opinions seem to clash louder than ever, it is easy to let our differences take center stage. This is especially true in our relationships, whether it’s a close friendship or a family bond. The truth is, no matter how much we care about someone, we will always have disagreements. While those differences can make relationships interesting, it’s the similarities we share that often anchor us, pulling us back together when disagreements threaten to pull us apart. Focusing on what unites us rather than divides us is not about ignoring differences or pretending we agree when we don’t. It’s about prioritizing the parts of our connections that nurture respect, understanding, and love. In our closest relationships, where emotions run deep and the stakes feel high, this focus on common ground can make all the difference. This morning’s message delivered by Pastor Jake Steele was similar to this. Funny thing, I had started the column, but something just was not right with how it was coming together. One of his comments left me thinking about it all day, and when considering it, the words flowed. Pastor Steele said, “disagreement is a given; division is a decision”. Deep! When we first form relationships, it’s usually because we are drawn to shared values or experiences. We find comfort in the ways we are alike and joy in discovering mutual interests. As time goes on, we start to see each other’s quirks and differences, and those initial similarities may fade into the background. In times of tension or disagreement, it helps to bring those shared traits and experiences back to the surface. What was it that initially connected you? Perhaps you share similar life goals or a shared sense of humor. Reflecting on these shared qualities does not erase the differences that might have cropped up, but it reminds us why this person is important in the first place. In any close relationship, trust is essential. Trust is built on respect and understanding, two qualities that flourish when we focus on common ground. When we focus only on differences, we may start to see the other person differently. This can create a subtle barrier, even with people we hold close. By concentrating on our similarities, we reinforce the idea that we’re on the same team. Sometimes, the big differences seem impossible to bridge, but even then, there are usually small similarities that can offer comfort. Maybe you and your loved one disagree on politics or other significant topics, but you both enjoy cooking, hiking, or the same television shows. Focusing on these smaller areas of commonality can be an excellent reminder that, in many ways, you are already on the same wavelength. These shared interests create moments of ease and relaxation in a relationship, offering a reprieve from the strain that differences can sometimes bring. In those moments, it is easier to remember the reasons that originally brought you together. Empathy is much easier to practice when we remember our loved ones are not so different from ourselves. Recognizing shared qualities or struggles can foster empathy even in the most challenging moments. For example, if a close friend is going through a tough time, focusing on how you both value resilience can help you support them better, rather than dwelling on a difference in how you would handle the situation. When we actively seek the similarities we share with those we love, we build the foundation for deeper empathy. This empathy allows us to view the situation with compassion, bridging divides with care rather than criticism. Ultimately, our relationships thrive not because we are the same, but because we are willing to work through our differences, together. It is much easier to do this when we keep at top-of-mind the values and memories we share. Relationships do not last because we agree on every topic. They last because we prioritize the things that matter most. So next time you are in a disagreement with someone close, take a minute to pause and reflect on what brought you together. Remind yourself of shared moments, values, and dreams. Focusing on similarities does not mean ignoring differences. It is the action of letting love guide us back to the reasons we are committed to each other in the first place. In the end, love is not about sameness. It is about accepting and cherishing the whole person. When we look for common ground, we allow our closest relationships to grow deeper, even with the inevitable disagreements. I love it when the streets start to quiet down at night and the building lights gradually dim. I'm having trouble sleeping lately, so I decided to hang out by the glass window and enjoy the peace and quiet of my neighbourhood at night. Sometimes being alone in the dark, with just you and your orange pekoe tea, is the best way to think.
I never dreamed I'd be able to survive being alone, and I don't mean that in a romantic sense. Not everything revolves around romance. Lol. But what I really mean is that I can handle being alone despite having been sheltered my entire life. Everything came easily to me in the Philippines, but it's a different story here in Canada. I struggled physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and I must say that there were times when I lost faith and had no idea where my life would lead me. I saw what an unprivileged existence may be like: no one to turn to, difficulties finding work, difficulty meeting new people and dealing with coworkers, and how some people hate you for no reason. I was so lonesome that I could hear my own thoughts eating me alive at times, and I felt it was the death of me. Emotionally, I was fatigued, and I relied on myself because I chose to be here, to be independent, and to forge my own path, so I had only myself to blame. The person I expected to be there for me couldn't keep his promises. It was hard to think that before I came here, we had plans, and thought maybe there’s hope in a long distance relationship and we could make it work. I was wrong. Everything fell apart.
Fortunately, I had the best support system in my family and close friends. They are the ones that have kept me going, as well as the goals and dreams I have for myself.
Moving forward, I believe I am a different person with a clearer goal and motivation. Instead of being frustrated about things over which I have no control, I am leaning towards the idea that maybe, everything does happen for a reason.
Perhaps, the universe is telling me that everything that has happened to me has made me stronger and wiser in life. Maybe, God took something away from me because it wasn't good for me, and that there's something better for me out there — one who shares the same wavelength as me, same desire, same passion for what we actually believe in and achieve in life. One who understands that love is more than a feeling and a word, but a commitment even when you are at your worst, still can see that there’s so much more to love about you. One who sees right through you, that even in your brokenness, you are God’s masterpiece, always have and always will be.
Maybe the universe is letting you suffer because you were designed to be great, and your destiny is so bright that you need to be prepared and seasoned. That with the appropriate determination and perspective, even the most difficult road appears to be a walk in the park. Perhaps you're simply inside a tunnel. It may be dark now, but it will be at its brightest once you get at your destination.
The experiences I've had in this wonderful country have been incredibly humbling, and I've learned to appreciate everyone around me and how they make the most out of their lives.
This is a terrifying rollercoaster ride. It's stunningly exciting and can make you churn, but that's part of the appeal of it. After all, how can you call a rollercoaster interesting if it lacks thrills and suspense? All you have to do is sit back, grab on tight, and enjoy the journey because it will be a beautiful experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. 🧡😊
( I decided to take a video of my view that night so I would have something to look back on. So that anytime I look at it, I will remember this sweet night of reflection and how a shift in perspective made all the difference for me. 🧡)

magenta cont.
uncut version can be found here
full transcript:
magenta has become pretty significant color for me. Even though there were some preconceived ideas of what colors I'm allowed to like, it's still a color that I've always felt this personal connection with I've been learning more about the color recently. And as it would turn out magenta is sort of this color that our brains made up. It is actually not a single wavelength in the visible light spectrum, but it's more so a combination of red and blue wave which exists on opposite ends of the spectrum. And I take that information and look back at my non binary identity. And I wonder if this was some sort of foreshadowing some sort of sirens call lately, I've been using magenta as sort of a comforting tool that anytime I'm feeling down or hopeless, I'll make an effort to wear something magenta to remind me that there's still beauty in the world I call them pink days. Even though I know that pink is technically a different color and that's just how my brain works. I assign narrative meaning to things and they become these coping mechanisms that helped me through the days it's something that I'm extremely hesitant on sharing with people. Mostly because I'm afraid that someone's gonna care too much. They're gonna see me wearing pink and they'll think that my worlds spiraling and it probably is, but I don't want I don't want it to always mean that. I want to be able to just wear pink sometimes. Today was a pink day though. about 24 hours ago, my dad passed out in the bathroom and he's in the hospital now. And leading up to that point. He was acting manic. And it's quite possible then He hasn't been taking his medication again there's a lot of other variables here because he's he also has a kidney problem so maybe it's that maybe and he he's saying that he thinks he broke his neck and I think it's just him being manic again but scary because I don't really recognize him when he's in the state there is a month long period last year where or he's been like this and I have been an entire state away physically so it just feels so out of my hands and I know he wants to see me and that's that's the more scary part about it because the plan was for him to drive down and bring me back home that's supposed to happen in five days but with all of this it's probably not going to happen and and I don't think he knows it. And if he's told it I don't think he'll believe it and I don't know what to do I don't know what I can do really. We have been on weird terms ever since I found my name not to say that they've been unsupportive but they haven't really acknowledged it my parents and there's this chilling truth that the only time my dad has been really supportive of it like really trying has been when he's in this state of mania when I can barely recognize him I don't know what to make of it starting to feel like I just need to stop thinking I'll I'll get a break because every time I feel like I'm going to it just gets more and more messy so I had my pink day and that's where things are right now. Apparently they've he's sleeping now and gave him his meds. Maybe things will change I've wanted to make this video earlier. But I've just not had the motivation. wanted it to be scripted and to be more like a documentation of my narrative inquiry listen this happened and it just felt right to get it out here how to share more of my narrative inquiry things because they're they're important to me for now I'll just keep moving forward and tomorrow might be a pink day and the day after that may be another I'll be fine because I'll be able to remember then there's still the potential for beauty hope you're doing all right. Thanks for listening this far

Bug Color Vision: A Non-Human Angle Towards Color
Welcome to today’s episode of Why Did I Put So Much Effort Into This?! Featuring: bug color vision! I’ve been forking the idea around for a while now, and I figured I should share it with Tumblr in case others are interested as well.
Note that a lot of this information was worked and written with Hollow Knight in mind since it was pooled for my Hollow Knight fic. However, I think this information applies generally to anyone who may be writing fictional bug people. Also note that a lot of the information here is somewhat extrapolated; a lot of the insect (not even *bug! Specifically insect!) color vision research I found focused on honeybees, which are obviously not all there is to insects. I personally try to blend anthropomorphic aspects, ie human-like traits, into my worldbuilding as much as possible and as seamlessly as I can, and that plays into what I say here too. But without further ado:
*bug = anything people would normally consider a bug. This includes insects, arachnids, some crustaceans (namely isopods), and myriapods (centipedes and millipedes), so most arthropods. This post mostly concerns insects, but there will be limited mention on arachnid, specifically spider, color vision, and some speculation about crustacean color vision.
Human Color Vision Refresher
What most people know of color vision is heavily based in human color vision, which is unsurprising. We can’t reliably guess how non-human creatures perceive the world in color, and what we do know are estimates based on the structural mechanisms they use to perceive it. This post will be no different, and on top of that, we would get nowhere if you do not understand how human color vision works. For anyone needing a refresher, or perhaps anyone who never learned this to begin with, here’s a quick summary of it.
Human eyes have many photoreceptors, which are light sensing cells that send signals to the brain. We have two types of photoreceptors: cones and rods. (Rods are used in non-color vision, so we’re not discussing those in this post.) In most humans, there are three types of cones that are stimulated by blue light, green light, and red light respectively. When any of these cone cells are stimulated, they send an electrical signal to the brain, which processes them into a visual, colorized picture.
One thing to note that color vision can only exist if there are at least two different types of cones. Colorblindness, or rather color deficiency, in humans results from one or more of the three cone types not sending signals to the brain. If two of the cone types do not function, this person would have monochromatic vision. This is because you need at least two different types of inputs to compare for color vision to be possible. The more cone types, the more comparisons can be made, and the more colors you can theoretically see. The converse is true as well; with only one cone type, the inputs can only be compared to the lack of light, so there is no color.
The color ‘output’ also depends on the degree of stimulation. Each cone type is most sensitive to a certain wavelength of light. Our blue cones are, as implied, most sensitive to blue light, meaning that they are the most stimulated and send the strongest signal when they detect blue light. However, they are still stimulated by violet light, just not as much as they are by blue light. Through comparing this degree of stimulation in one cone type with that of the other cone types, we can perceive a massive range of colors.
We call this maximum range of colors that we can see the visible light spectrum, which runs from violet light, where the wavelengths are short (around 400 nm), to red light, where the wavelengths are long (around 750 nm). Though, clearly, this is what is visible to humans. Many animals, particularly insects, have a different ‘visible spectrum’ of light. This depends on the type of cones they have. As mentioned before, humans have blue, green, and red cones, meaning our color vision is roughly R-G-B based. This is generally not true for bugs.
Bug Color Vision
For many insects, red light is invisible. Lots of bugs have a green cone, but its sensitivity does not stretch into the part of the light spectrum that we would consider red. They may be able to see yellow, and hesitantly a bit of orange, but deep scarlets and maroons are totally invisible to them. However, they can see into the other end of the spectrum, what we call ultraviolet light. In fact, a lot of insects have a cone that is most sensitive to UV light. To put it in perspective a little, UV light is invisible to humans, but is very visible to many insects, so much so that some flowers have UV absorbing pigments that are used to guide pollinators like honeybees!
Putting this slightly differently, we can consider the visible light spectrum for bugs to be comparatively shifted towards shorter wavelengths. To them, ultraviolet light would just be violet, and red would be infragreen. The coloration of many things would be shifted; red isn’t visible, but UV and the lack of UV is, color mixing and color ratios would shift, etc. Their world should look pretty different from ours, even beyond considering the very likely possibility that bugs don’t process colors like humans do.
On top of that, many bugs are actually dichromatic. Spiders, lots of beetles, and from what I’ve been able to find, many bugs in general have a UV cone and a green cone. To compare it to humans, when someone has a nonfunctional cone type, they are dichromatic and see a more limited range of colors. Assuming bugs process color similarly—and they may well do so if they’re anthropomorphic bugs!—would mean that many bugs are relatively color deficient. They still have color vision, and they can detect UV light and green light perfectly fine, but the number of shades they can distinguish and tell apart may be limited.
In comparison, honeybees are trichromatic like humans, but they have UV cones, blue cones, and green cones, making their vision G-B-UV based. This allows them to see many more shades of colors than their fellow bugs, which is very useful when they are as visual and as prolific of a pollinator as they are. A good number of diurnal insects are also trichromatic as well, and it’s fairly easy to see why.
How This Is Relevant
So what is this useful for? When writing anthro bugs, taking the colors they’re able to see (and those that they can’t see) can create a good many interesting scenarios. It can also have implications on how their societies work. For example, our artificial lights don’t actually produce white light! (Unless you use LEDs, but LEDs use different technology.) They are generally quite yellow; we only think they’re white because our brains color correct them. For bugs, this sort of lighting isn’t going to be particularly helpful, since they’re not very sensitive to yellow light. It would be a pretty dull glow for them, and they’d need a greener light if they wanted to have more illumination. Except green light has a shorter wavelength than yellow light does, and shorter wavelengths typically have more energy. (This is why UV light is considered damaging! Wear sunscreen and protect your eyes, folks.) Technologically, this can be a great deal more challenging to handle. This lack of artificial lighting can impact anthro bug societies in a variety of ways; activity past sundown would be very difficult!
You can also play around with the basal aspects of your worldbuilding. If you want your anthro bugs to be more analogous to human experiences, you can make all your bugs trichromatic. This gives you more room to explore dichromacy in a largely trichromatic society, and also makes it easier for you to describe colors. Trichromacy is also helpful evolutionarily; being able to see more colors means you’re more likely to tell the difference between food and potential predators, and you might find mates more easily. But of course, that comes with a metabolic payoff, and lots of predators get by just fine with only two types of cones. Cats seem perfectly content on exterminating the local bird population with their two cone types, so your bugs will be just fine if you go that route.
In the context of Hollow Knight? Hornet’s no longer our beloved red cloaked spiderwyrm. Though some species of spiders can see red in limited quantities, and most of those being diurnal spiders at that, spiders do not have cones that can detect red light. They literally cannot see the color that Hornet is wearing. It would just look black to them. So she would be wearing a very different color, most likely. The areas of Hallownest would potentially be a lot more vibrant as well, considering the potential for UV pigments that we can’t see being visible to its buggy inhabitants. It also has some rather sinister implications if you remember that bugs cannot see orange. What’s worse than fighting a plague? A plague that you physically cannot see.
Color Mixing Beyond Wavelengths
Of course, biology is never simple. Even human color vision isn’t just the wavelengths of light and the stimulations of our cone cells with nothing else. The existence of magenta as a color that we can perceive more than proves otherwise.
If you look at the human visible spectrum of light, you’ll generally see the classic rainbow of colors plastered over their respective wavelengths. Red at the long wavelength end, then orange, yellow, green, blue, and finally violet at the short wavelength end. But magenta is not on this spectrum. This is because magenta is not an actual wavelength of light.
So what, pray tell, is it? It’s the result of our blue cones and red cones being stimulated, but not our green cones. When two types of cones are stimulated simultaneously, our brains tend to take all the inputs and average them out. So according to that, blue + green = cyan, green + red = yellow, and any shade within a specific color just looks that color. But following this logic, blue + red = green, which is obviously not correct. Evolutionarily, it is advantageous to be able to tell when something is green, like a plant, an unripe fruit, or maybe something poisonous, and when something is magenta. So our brains made up a new color for it.
Something similar can be said of white light, which is also not on the human visible spectrum of light. You’ve likely seen pictures of white light entering a prism and coming out as a rainbow. This is an indirect way of representing that white light is simply all wavelengths of light that the human eye can detect. In other words, if the light your eyes detects stimulates all three of your cone types, you perceive the object as white.
This all may sound sort of obvious, but remember that generally speaking, bugs cannot see red and can see UV. This means that things that look white to us may not look white to them. Lots of otherwise white insects have UV patterning, and again, some flowers have UV pigments that we cannot see that are obvious to bugs. So a white flower for us may actually be more like cyan for a honeybee, and something that is yellow to us may just look green to them.
And, on top of that, recall that honeybees have three cone types as well. Theoretically, if there is some pigment that reflects UV light and green light but not blue light, honeybees should also perceive a type of ‘magenta,’ assuming their brains process these inputs similarly to human brains. This opens up an even bigger range of potential colors that bugs can see, and you can really do anything with the concept. No one really knows what bug color vision looks like, and certainly not a theoretical bug magenta, so go wild with the idea.
Tetrachromacy: Butterflies, The ‘Anomalies’
Trichromacy isn’t the maximum number of cone types you can have. Again, in theory, the more cone types you have, the more comparisons you can make, and the more colors you can see, provided that you use all of said cones for color vision. Some species of butterflies come rather close to this, and here is a handy graph to represent it:
[image description: an infographic showing the sensitivity of different opsins in three different species of butterflies and in mantis shrimp. All three graphs for the butterflies are a mess of colored lines; all of them have at least 8 discrete lines, each of which shows the varying sensitivity to different wavelengths of light. The peaks for all three graphs, particularly for the graph labeled B, overlap in such a way that it is hard to distinguish the peaks of each line. Notably, however, all three graphs for the butterflies have lines corresponding to UV light, blue light, green light, and red light.
The mantis shrimp sensitivity graph is also a mess of lines and peaks, but they have a much more uniform distribution, with each line rising, peaking, and falling in roughly the same shape. There are 11 different lines on this graph, all of which have peaks that are easy to identify. As a whole, however, the graphs look like a colorful mess. end image description]
Oh, did I say handy? I meant messy. Some species of butterflies (and of course the famed mantis shrimp, which we will be ignoring for now) have an absolute motherlode of cone types. The swallowtail butterflies (top left, labeled A) have 8, but I believe some had up to 12 or 13? Either way, that is a lot of cone types. The one unifying factor in all three graphs for the butterflies, however, is that all of them have cones for UV light, blue light, green light, and red light.
While these graphs look spectacular, not all of these cones are used in color vision. Scientists aren’t too sure what they are used for; one hypothesis is that some may be used to detect sudden shifts in light intensity, which can mean a predator is flying above. However, they are fairly certain that their UV, blue, green, and red cones are used for color vision. This makes these butterflies tetrachromats with R-G-B-UV based vision, and they are able to see an enormous range of colors. Research on butterflies has also found that they are almost as good as humans are at distinguishing between shades of color too, so they can actually see far more colors than we do! (Mantis shrimp, unfortunately, are not nearly as good at color differentiation as either butterflies or humans. Presumably they just process color vision differently. No secret shrimp colors to be found, sadly.)
Not only does this mean butterflies have access to a wider range of colors that are actual wavelengths of light, it also means they have way more potential color mixing opportunities. It’s entirely possible that they can see a color that is the combination of just red and UV, or green and UV, or UV, green, and red. And really, blue, green, and red but not UV wouldn’t look white to them, because white results from all of the cone types being stimulated.
I do have to note that not all butterfly species have this number of cone types. Some are simply trichromatic, like honeybees. But for writing purposes, it could be pretty interesting to make butterflies the tetrachromats. They are able to see many things that other bugs cannot, which would either inspire awe or fear in them. It’s also possible that art made by butterflies is more highly sought after, because the tiny details they’re able to add and see clearly make their art multitudes more vivid than art created by other bugs. (Butterfly Lurien writers~) And these are just possible implications I could think of off the top of my head. The possibilities are quite literally endless.
I didn’t do nearly as much research on this, but it seems some species of dragonflies are also tetrachromats! Really, you can designate certain species of bugs to be tetrachromatic or dichromatic or what have you, without even necessarily adhering to real life biology. But even what’s found in real life and extrapolating it for anthropomorphic bugs can be really interesting.
Non-Insect Color Vision
I’ve mentioned arachnids briefly above, but there isn’t much more to say beyond reiterating that most spiders, and likely most arachnids, have G-UV based vision. This varies a little depending on behavior; nocturnal bugs, not just arachnids, tend to have weaker color vision, but are more likely to use UV light to navigate. And considering that the spiders in Hollow Knight live in underground cave systems, it’s not too far a leap to assume they evolved from a nocturnal species of spider.
On the other hand, crustaceans tend to have B-UV based vision. Lots of crustaceans are water dwelling, and water is not an easy medium for light to penetrate. The deeper into water you go, the less light reaches you, and red light is one of the first wavelengths to go. As you go further down, the longer wavelengths become more and more sparse because they have less energy in them. They simply don’t have enough energy to keep going, but blue light and UV light, with their shorter wavelengths, keep going just fine. This is why crustaceans have B-UV based vision, if they are dichromatic at all.
As for terrestrial crustaceans, particularly isopods as per popular fanon about Quirrel? It varies. Pillbugs are actually nearly blind, having only weak light sensing eyes that do not detect color. But they typically live in damp, dark places, and have little need for vision to begin with. Hermit crabs are dichromatic, possibly with G-B based vision. Of course for anthropomorphic crustaceans, your word as writer is law, but it’s possible that they are generally dichromatic compared to other bugs. I’m not too clear on when crustaceans re-evolved to be terrestrial, but that can be one argument you can make for them being dichromatic. They simply haven’t been terrestrial for long enough for a novel trichromatic gene to pop up. Though, to be fair, it’s more likely for traits to be lost rather than gained, and it can also just be that: it’s unlikely that terrestrial crustaceans independently evolved trichromacy.
Admittedly, I haven’t done research on myriapod vision at all. I don’t know what their eyes are like, but once again, in a world of anthro bugs, your word as writer is law. You can go as biology focused as you want. Regardless, I do hope this post is interesting and has made some of you reconsider your worldbuilding, and above all else, happy writing!

Kid bonding with Death and Asura more in the Asura lives AU? Doesn’t matter what tbh, I just want to watch them bond.
Heck yeah!! Since you gave me some free reign on this one, I went with Lord Deaths reaction to seeing Asura again after being freed from his madness. This one isn't as Kid heavy, but I feel like Asura needed some more focus time with his dad!
Lord Death meeting Asura again (Asura lives AU):
Lord Death had been completely prepared to watch one of his sons die the day the DWMA confronted Asura. He had mourned the loss of Asura years ago when he’d been sealed away. Lord Death had always felt that he’d somehow failed Asura as a father. Still, he loved his son, and the thought of having to lose him again permanently was heartbreaking. He knew that it would be necessary for the safety of the world though.
What he did not expect to happen though, was Maka escorting a crying and bashful Asura into the death room at the end of the battle. He barely recognized his son for a moment. The wavelength his soul held was so different than what it used to be- so different from what had been plaguing the world for the past few months. It was like the madness that had inflicted him was completely gone and he was replaced with that same vulnerable child that Lord Death felt he had failed to save.
He never should have underestimated Maka and her ability to reach and heal so many of the souls around her. She had a way of uplifting others that surpassed anything Death had seen before.
When he saw Maka walk in with a squirming Asura in tow, Death was so taken aback that he had no idea how to react. Maka had said something, but he was so focused on Asura that he didn’t hear what it was. He did notice though, when his other son walked in. With the whole family in the room, the tension was so thick he thought they all might drown in it. Still- he stood there, just watching them all.
“I knew this wouldn’t work! I wish you would have killed me instead. My father can’t forgive me for everything I’ve done!” Asura cried to Maka.
“Father, we weren’t sure what to do next. Somehow Maka managed to free him from the grips of madness. Once he stopped fighting, we felt that we couldn’t kill him and Maka wanted us to bring him to you,” Kid said.
Death finally broke away from his shock, enough to slowly approach Asura, who was still squirming in fear and clinging to Maka like a small child. He reached out his arms and grabbed Asura. He held him by the shoulders for a moment, his hands engulfing almost the entire length of his arms. He looked into his child’s eyes, seeing such a deep fear, not of the others in this room, but a fear that said he was afraid of disappointing his dad. Death pulled Asura close to him, embracing him in a hug that the two had been certain would never be shared again until this moment.
“Asura… I hope you can find a way to forgive the way I raised you. I feel that I pushed so much anxiety on you and your powers and mind couldn’t take it. I’m certain if I’d taken the time to quell those fears, you would’ve been able to see the good in this world instead.”
Asura was frozen, he’d been certain that his father would kill him on the spot when he showed up. Here he was though, being hugged like he was a small child again. Despite being so much older now, Asura found a deep comfort in this that he hadn’t known in such a long time- or perhaps ever. Unsure of his next move, Asura reached out and hugged his father back. He was certain that Lord Death would let him go, push him away, and finally end the failure Asura felt he was. Instead, Death held him just a bit tighter.
“I’m going to go help the others,” Maka whispers to Kid, “I think you should stay here. You’re all going to have a lot to talk about.”
Maka walks out and Kid takes a step closer to his family. He clears his throat. Death finally breaks Asura away from him and reaches out, bonking Asura on the head with one of his famous “Reaper Chops”.
“Kid, this is the Asura I wish you could have met first. This is what your brother is truly like, and what I feel he can continue to be and grow from,” Death says, “And you, Asura, are going to be putting in a lot of work to help atone for the imbalance you put on the world. You won’t ever be alone for it though. You were my responsibility and I let this get out of hand. I’ll be there every step of the way.”
“I’ll be here to help as well. It seems father has already made a decision for you, and I’m curious to see how it will go,” Kid says.
Asura glances between them, but seeing how genuine the two of them were, and being shown such kindness from that girl, Maka… Asura was able to see that he was given a new chance at family and a new chance at a better life.
