Making Kingdom Hearts Stuff Until KH4 Comes Out (Day 96)
I feel like I got to note and emphasize that the first option is something he says in 0.2 and the beginning of KH3 which I talked about on this post. It's pretty much something he says to cope and adds to how his failures were getting to him.
Sora's dwindling self-esteem never leaves my thoughts

Current thoughts are about Luxu and the contrast between how much he cares and how worn down by time he is. He's commited to the MoM's plans but also shows care for his fellow Foretellers and the keyblade wielders who were sacrificed to make this all work.
Tumblr media
(The way his tone and wording is so different from how he speaks as Xigbar, this guy's whole thing with identity uwaaaghhahhha. Like even when compared to how he speaks as Bragi too.)
His role is to watch so he does, but he cares enough to get directly involved but also follows MoM's plans so he still let's things happen.
(He was friends with Xehanort and Eraqus, but what does it matter under a new name and face. When he's Braig/Xigbar, he isn't Bragi so it shouldn't matter. Except it does because it's all Luxu, but where has Luxu gone after all the years and bodies?)
(He's seen enough self-sacrifice and he continues to see it. He even wanted Sora to grasp what he was saying in Olympus, but if he wasn't then all the better, but still...)
I have so many thoughts on him but I don't even know where to start currently ToT

When looking back with hindsight, my head runs in circles thinking about Xehanort's manipulation of Eraqus and the Wayfinders, especially the former.
Xehanort actively knew that Eraqus:
was avoidant, has always been one to run away and not one to be open with his feelings when he's hurt or about the past for that matter
really looked up to him and still wanted to see and treat him with good grace
had a strong prejudice against darkness that was solidified due to the events of Dark Road
As a result, he banked on the likelihood that Eraqus wouldn't have told his students about the events of Dark Road or that Xehanort had attempted making use of Darkness and bringing back the Keyblade War at least twice before. He banked on the fact that he would have instilled those narrow-minded views onto his students, making them vulnerable to his plans.
And so Xehanort pulled strings, placed wedges, isolated, harmed, killed, possessed, and separated. It's incredibly heinous when you think of those scenes in BBS and place them next to Dark Road or even the chess scenes in KH3.
Tumblr media
Seeing this, seeing how Eraqus actively looked up to him since he was older (even if barely), seeing Baldr call Eraqus Xehanort's light—it adds to the tragedy so much. From BBS alone, you could kind of glean the possibilities, but having an actual canon full picture destroys me. It's the fact that by BBS, Xehanort was seemingly more than okay with quite literally stabbing his only (known) remaining friend in the back with no hesitation.
I know I've made a post before about how wild Xehanort killing Eraqus was in the past but I just can't get over everything else that happened around it as well. It's not just him deciding to kill his friend but also manipulate him and his students, use them like tools for his plans. Took advantage of his friend's flaws, trauma, and issues and wringed it of all he could for his own benefit, destroying the lives of many.
I just can't express how wild Xehanort's manipulation was in general.

Making Kingdom Hearts Stuff Until KH4 Comes Out (Day 90)
This art block of sorts has led me down the route of changing things up a bit. So I decided to try a bush I hadn't used before since I don't usually stray from the ones I use usually. On Sketchbook it's called "Dream Brush"!
I also decided to take a shot at drawing differently than I usually do. It's more like how I did when I was younger, which made me see why I changed that process but it was still fun!
This is also the first time I've officially drawn Zexion apparently. I think the first-first time I made an attempt was a mini doodle of KH characters with one of those expression meme challenges, but it's been so long and they were so tiny that I'm just going to keep that in the drafts LOL
I'll try to draw him (and the other Org characters) properly in the future. I'm already thinking of how I'd draw him differently from this ToT (like eye shape and whatnot). This was testing the waters v-v
(Also happy day 90! I'm ten days off of 100 which is really screaming at me that time is flying ToT)

A Matter of Perspective: The Conflict of The Lost Master Saga (or Kingdom Hearts as a Whole)
A building up theme in Kingdom Hearts is how Light and Darkness aren't as what they seem in terms of "good" and "bad".
This came to mind after contemplating a lot of different moments/characters (Riku, Vanitas, Dark Road, etc.) + this video ("The Nature of Darkness" by AZ Link) that discusses darkness and why certain things for one character are considered darkess while the same thing for another character isn't.
(I recommend it! It came out during March Caprice and adds a lot of insight into the Perspective perspective (lol) that the series has and is pretty much the catalyst of me writing this essay)
Essentially, what this video and the series itself has been building up to is that the battle between Light and Darkness is not just "Light good and just vs Dark evil and unjust" but a study on how people view others, the world around them and how it becomes the core of conflict.
The video already brings up a lot of interesting examples so I won't just reiterate them here. I do, however, want to hone in on the Master of Masters and discuss Dark Road and the specific things the upperclassmen say.
(I'm, like, 1000% sure I've made a post using this scene/screenshots before but I can't find it at the moment. Either that or I'm blending it with the multiple times I've used these in conversation with my friends)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this. This is essentially what the series is trying to get at.
If someone sees themselves and what they're doing as Light then it won't come out as Darkness, at least, not how someone who perceives the same things as Darkness would. This can be seen with Riku and Terra. The mentioned video presents why Terra wanting to protect Ven is still him making use of Darkness while Mickey wanting to get revenge for Goofy ("They'll pay for this") isn't, and when put under the lens of "perspective" it makes sense. The same applies to Riku, he sees things as darkness but his shift in perspective allows him to utilize it.
Light and darkness are natural forces in the KH universe that have their own behavior (and seem to be sentient as seen with the True Darknesses (less seen with Light currently)). This, in itself, also brings up some thoughts.
It's also something to see Eraqus's resistent reaction to what the upperclassmen say here. It's a tragic indicator of his failures when he gets older but it's ven more tragic knowing what happens with Baldr ends up solidifying his own ideals, stopping any potential development he could have had in the DR era. He's another blatant example of how perspective matters. He was shown as a being close to Light. He was unable to look past the tragedy, and as a result, pushed harmful ideals onto his students. He never viewed himself or his actions as darkness (up until his death). In writing this, it hits me that the tragedy of Eraqus is that while having a good intentions, he grew up with narrow views being instilled into him stacked on having any positive epiphany forcefully getting cut short by the machinations of something bigger (Baldr and Xehanort).
The fact of the matter is that positives and negatives are nature and coexist. Light and Darkness seem to be locked in an ongoing eternal battle with each other and since KH hasn't reached the conclusion to that yet, I'll hold off on going too deep into that for now, because whatever ends up happening will end up being the crux and climax to this particular theme's narrative in my mind. What does it all mean if you make light and darkness actual physical forms? I hope to get an answer to that eventually.
Moving onto the Master of Masters, going into the next saga, from what we hae seen of him, this is a person that's pretty much a Light extremist. As he mentioned, his trauma forms his hatred of darkness. What he does is for the sake of defeating it and ensuring the survival of Light. Yet, his actions are extremely questionable (manipulation, insinuating the Keyblade War, the deaths of so many children). Despite that, we haven't seen any kind of physical manifestation of darkness stem from that. What he does is for the "greater good" of light.
Set on a stage where these forces can't be controlled in a physical sense, there's no literal indication of what's the "good" and what's the "bad". When presented with an antagonist that's on the side of "Light" but isn't all "good". It'd be interesting to see Sora in that setting going into Quadratum.
So this was just a long-winded addendum to say: "We're really in for it now, Sora." and "it's cool that the next arc is setting up someone who's extremes are in the alignment of Light."
I think having all the setup from the Darkseeker Saga allows for this theme to pick up steam for the Lost Master Saga.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My brain is consistently mush so I feel like I never can fully say my thoughts in a eloquent matter. I feel that this is a "treading a worn path" type of post but I'm just so fascinated by this turn of events that I can't help it.
As mentioned, I'm really curious to see how the literal Light and Darkness conflict will play out. I'm also just curious over light in particular. We've seen darkness act as sentient characters but light still feels enigmatic.
All in all, I'm sorry if none of this made sense ToT I can't help but worry if my posts/"essays" are just incoherent ramblings. There is more to be said but I'm lacking in the brain juice to be the one to say it...
Two Random KH Japanese Lines I Was Curious About Translated
Just some random lines that I, at one point or another, was curious about in the Japanese version. Some screenshots for the particular parts that got my attention. Most of these aren't big deals btw, just stuff I was curious about!
The end of Larxene and Sora's conversation (KH3)
ENG:
L: I was really just along for the ride.
S: With...?
L: My secret.
JPN:
L: I was only hanging around/out with that guy.
Tumblr media
S: "That guy?"
L: Secret!
Note:
There isn't anything too notable in terms of difference for me but the phrasing was something that I was always taken by.
2. No Name (Luxu and MoM's conversation) (Back Cover)
ENG:
L: The Gazing Eye?
M: That's not what it's called.
L: Oh, what then?
M: Hm. Actually, no name.
L: No Name...
JPN:
L: Gazing Eye?
M: That's not the name.
L: Ah, so it's different / Ah, [so] that's wrong.
M: Yeah, there's no name.*
L: No Name...*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note:
So the interesting thing about this exchange is that ENG has the lines play out in a way that seemingly makes Luxu misunderstand MoM and think that the keyblade's name is "No Name". In Japanese, MoM says it in a way that makes it clear that it has no name and Luxu just ends up saying "No Name" in English (written in Katakana) which, at least to me, means he decided to call it No Name. Either way, I've always found it funny whenever I look over Back Cover in both languages LOL
(Also, I'll probably make a whole post for this whole conversation and for sure, a character study in JPN post for MoM specifically because the way he speaks is SO fascinating (all his vocal quirks and decisions in sentence/word choice can't be captured in English just by the way these languages work, it's extremely noticeable with him (both languages for him are amazing though)))
Hi Friend! I have another translation ask for you, should you chose to accept it! (If you aren't feeling inspired, it is truly okay to say no.)
Anyway, it is a small bit of dialog in KH3--from Dark Riku no less-- that I'm wondering about. It is from the scene A Riku from the Past? where Dark Riku says in English: "A reason? When did that ever matter? We've been trying to one-up each other since we were kids."
I'm wondering if there are any differences in the Japanese, and in general what it says. -Nyssa
Hello! I'm always down to tackle a translation ask! This one is pretty short so looking into this won't take me as long.
I'll gather some of the lines surrounding Dark Riku's as well. But I'll put screenshots of the specific line you put.
Kingdom Hearts 3 - "A Riku From the Past?" (Not the entire-entire cutscene)
S: Riku...that appearance...are [you] really Riku?
R: The appearance doesn't matter, what's important is the heart.
S: If you're really Riku/Especially because you're really Riku, why would [you] do this kind of thing?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
R: "Why?" You should remember. Don't we always compete?
S: No way—
~~~~~~~
Notes:
The brackets are just to indicate that "you" is implied. In Japanese, pronouns are often omitted since you can usually tell who's being referred to by context. I do this just to make it clear, especially when I look back on it.
There isn't actually much difference between JPN and ENG for the specific line you mentioned, mostly different phrasngs like "When did that ever matter?" vs "You should remember." + ENG Dark Riku's question more pointing to their childhood over the general-ness of JPN.
On another note, I always find it interesting when I find a line where ENG kind of has to add filler of sorts to make up for lip flaps. This kinda occurs for the earlier line "The appearance doesn't matter..." since in ENG Riku says: "Looks are deceiving...but the heart? You know it's me." Since ENG already covers the entire JPN line in the first half, it adds that second sentence. In this case, it doesn't change the vibe/meaning in a noticeable way but there are other cases where it does. (ie the Sora, Ven, And Vanitas scene)
This was a neat ask! Even if there isn't a huge difference, I like looking into lines like these just to study how ENG team would have to go about translating and localizing. It's nice that I caught onto this before retiring for the night LOL. Thanks for the request and I hope it was interesting!
(Also any corrections/additions from people who know better are always welcome and highly encouraged!!!)

I suddenly thought of this, and considering that quite a bit of my posts are about the Japanese dub, I wanted to get some insight on what it's like for other people in the community.
I'd especially like to hear anyone's thoughts about specifics like if they know seiyuus or about any particular lines they might know about or any major localization differences/errors!
