we performed my play today. the play that i wrote almost a year ago.

and it was amazing.

the cast were brilliant. my best friend played the busker and he did some truly wonderful singing. he also got to meet my grandparents, aunt and uncle afterwards and they all got on like a house on fire.

the set was brilliant. the costumes were brilliant. the director gave me a massive bunch of flowers at the end.

the performance was filmed and we're watching the film next week.

i am so proud of myself and the rest of the cast.

i think it's very funny that i've seen people headcanon wind to speak spanish or for his hylian to be similar to spanish cause like

i'm chilean, and our spanish is recognized by other spanish speakers as being the worst spanish since we speak with weird unique slang and we have a sing-song accent

like, there's a reason why there's so many memes of our spanish sucking ass lmao

anyway, this is a very convoluted and stupid way for me to say that wind is chilean now, i'm claiming him

someone in the chain mentions they know spanish too and wind replies with a heavy chilean accent and slang and everyone's like "what the fuck was that"

explaining why i want to play the main character in the play that i wrote to a bunch of strangers on tumblr because Reasons

so i did not even originally write this role for me. i actually wrote the role of the busker for myself, and then i met my best friend and was instantly like "he would be perfect for this role" so i had to look for other options for me. and the more i've thought about my main character, named sasha, the more i really really want to play her. and i want to play her even more because of an argument i had with my dad the other day.

to sum it up, i went out with some friends last week and my dad picked me up from two of the friends' house. he came into the house through the back door, which i was not expecting, and i was feeling rather hyperactive from having fun with my mates and also embarrassed because "oh god my dad is here and i'm surrounded by teenagers who i was just playing cards against humanity with. what the fuck do i do. i know i'll say something funny!"

so i said to my dad "where the hell did you come from?" in what i thought was the kind of voice people use when they're telling a joke. well my dad didn't agree with that and he also managed to completely mishear me? he thought i said "what the hell are you doing here" which is totally different from what i actually said, and if i had said that i would understand why he was pissed, but i didn't say it so he was just getting mad at me for something i did not say.

and he kept saying he didn't like my tone, which is a conversation we've had hundreds of times and i always try to tell him that my tone has nothing to do with the words i'm saying and i don't have much control over it, and every time this information goes over his head.

this time i guess i was just well and truly sick of it because when we got home i had a meltdown out of stress. the next morning i was able to explain the situation to my dad and he understood a bit better and he was very apologetic, which is good.

but this has given me even more incentive to play my own character.

because the thing about sasha is, obviously she's autistic right, if you've been keeping track of my play you know that by now. and if i were to play her, i would give her my voice. i would give her the voice that gets me in trouble. and i wouldn't have her apologise for it or learn to talk differently because there's nothing wrong with it, and i am tired of being told that my voice is unpleasant to listen to. that it stops people from listening to my words.

it would be like saying to the audience, "look. this is how some people express themselves. and we're not going away and we're not changing for you, so it's about time you grow up and get used to it."

i don't want to perform a pantomime of cheerfulness to make people listen to me. especially if the person i'm talking to is my literal fucking father. and i don't think sasha wants to do that either. so taking inspiration from my experiences allows both myself and the character to express ourselves in our own way, something that i think we both need.

maybe it's just the Radical Rediker talking, but there's something pointed in the way that, say, popular pirate media like Pirates of the Caribbean dilutes the pirate's freedom to "bring me that horizon" as opposed to, say, "plenty and satiety, pleasure and ease, liberty and power" (Bartholomew Roberts).

broadly speaking, most pirates chose the life in order to escape and revenge the hard labour, corporal punishment, overworking, and unequal pay of merchant/navy/privateer ships; or the privations of their sudden unemployment once a war was over, ignored as soon as their ability to die for the state was unneeded. yes, many were thugs, but, consciously political or not, they were responding to a particular, material reality.

the pirate's desired freedom was from the effects of exploitative modes of statehood and capital production. but popular media usually shifts this into a general desire for freedom: freedom to roam, freedom to love (usually merely a cross-class white, heterosexual union), or freedom from the personal pressures of social norms. it's a vague, ahistorical, post-Enlightenment, libertarian ideal rather than a response to a real social and economic situation.

to be clear, this only really applies to specifically the late golden age of piracy, in the first quarter of the 18th century. earlier generations of pirates/buccaneers often displayed nationalist/religious motives, and were lauded, tolerated, or even encouraged by the French and English states for aiding their fights against the Spanish and Portuguese. only the last gasp of age of sail pirates had a truly anti-national energy, and both figured themselves, and were figured by the imperial powers, as the enemies of all nations.

but if we are to valourise the late golden age pirate, at his best, his ideals were for true democracy, and the abolition of nation, hierarchy, and labour exploitation; not "the horizon". he was striking out in response to specific political, social, and economic oppressions, rather than a general individual restlessness, and that reality - and its similarities to our own - are important.

I dunno, I just... have a lot of thoughts about the defanging of piracy in modern media. obviously there were a lot of things bad about them, too, and the level of egalitarianism varied between individual people and ships. but again, if we're going to be valourising them anyway... there were idealists. and they weren't subtle about they wanted.

"Varric used to be mean and a centrist" the first time we meet Varric is roughly 20 years prior to Veilguard, and the Varric in Inquisition, who we see become a responsible father figure to Cole, is from 10 years prior to Veilguard

i think its' actually very fortunate that we got to see Varric grow from being a carefree, kind of jerky guy running a spy network in Kirkwall to someone who learns that he has the power to change the world for the better to make a safer place for him and his friends to live in, and also that he feels good when he knows he can be responsible for other people

just a thought idk. i see so many complaints about missing DA2 Varric as though he didnt see Kirkwall's destruction firsthand. he's really shaken by it in Inqusition dialogue and banter, he developed as a character. this isn't a new sudden change brought on by veilguard
