Some more about the discovery of John Norwich’s papers. Ellie belongs to @nocompromise-noregrets
They should all agree that there is no way on earth this can be kept quiet and they all do, by and large. Except, unfortunately for Debbie, who thinks they should just push it all away to someone else, somewhere else. Maybe just hide it in the archives released but not released.
“Think of the drop in revenue - no one is going to want to get married here when they read about all this - why don’t we give it over to where it actually happened?”
“Because it does not in fact, exist any more. As in, the house was levelled and the whole place is now something completely different - of course I’m sure they’ll place a plaque and a memorial there, but we cannot actually hide away a major historical discovery Debbie.”
“And that’s not even getting into the fact that the foremost expert on The Triad was the one who authenticated this - and I’ve got Ahmed coming down to triple check - he already emailed me something that essentially says ‘yes this is real, yes this checks out with Norwich’”
Ana, the Deputy Curator holds up a hand to quell the discussion.
“Debbie, we definitely cannot hide this - it would be worse if we did in the long run - and yes, I know it’s not going to be fun for you to manage this but it was found, we need to deal with it. I’ll get Yasmin to draft up a press statement and then release it tomorrow morning - Ahmed will be here this afternoon to confirm in person - she’ll see if Ellie and the builders want to be identified as the discoverers by name.”
Yasmin Magdhara, Welles Hall public relations officer closed her eyes for a moment to find some kind of calm. She has an idea of what she is going to say, but she knows she’s going to need to look at the material or at least, a summary of the material to know how bad it is and she’s absolutely not looking forward to that conversation.
-
Her meeting with Dr Ahmed Khan, the foremost expert on John Norwich confirms it - though she usually loves talking to Ahmed.
“The obsession with Ancient Rome and Greece - oh that’s absolutely the foremost reason to confirm that this garbage is Norwich - the identification with himself with Caesar, with Augustus and the ‘spoils of victory’ - that is him to the bone.”
The press statement is to the point. Somewhat. It starts with Major Find In Welles Hall Archives

it makes me so sad how debbie grew up being relentlessly bullied by everyone at school and being friendless and lonely, then she got older and made bad decisions to cope with said loneliness however those decisions just led to even more loneliness as her family started to turn on her, then by the end of her story she’s back to being that lonely, abandoned, tormented little girl.

i find it incredibly funny and telling seeing ian's reaction to mickey going to a hipster concert with his 'boyfriend'
he's there making faces and describing them looking at mickey as in 'this is everything you hate, are you for real?'
Tumblr media
i love how his reaction is to laugh and not to feel jealous at mickey ''trying'' to ''fit in'' for the guy, cause he knows he's just doing that to keep the whole ''i've moved on'' thing going and byron. it also made me think how this is what ian did with his other relationships, trying so hard to be loved. he knows that doesn't work and that mickey isn't like that so he doesn't feel threatened by ian's poundland's version. but ian? ian had to listen to trevor's music, tried to be ''cool'' and go to the club cause trevor kept pushing himself over ian i'mnotafraidofanything gallagher.
Tumblr media
i feel like ian's need to fit where people tell him to increased with s4 when he was maniac and away from his family. him being at the club, having ''regulars'' and parties (e.x. the one he went with mickey) he had this whole life that he didn't like but kept on shoving on himself cause he thought that's what he has to do to be loved. but then he's with mickey and s5 has him move on from that life as he's with someone who doesn't make him feel like he needs to try and pretend being someone else. s6 happens and the whole EMT is amazing but still, ian is still being used in ways (making caleb's father's angry + fucking a girl) so people want him just cause he fits with their needs and not what they can share together. its always ian giving to others. s7 with the whole trevor thing felt so awkward, he made ian feel like shit for not being up to date with every lgbtq term. trevor's group was basically this
Tumblr media
despite that, ian was never enough. trevor kept telling him off and showing how cool and superior he is compared to ian. which is why i love how ian can see through mickey's bullshit, knowing that doing so its just trying too hard, not being genuine. its not what mickey and ian are. ''can't we just be ian and mickey?''
and i think that also reflects on s11 arc for them. ian wants to make the marrige work, he doesn't want mickey to regret it so he tries so hard, but by doing so they struggle to understand each others at first. they both want monogamy but a misunderstanding makes them both think the other wants to include people in their sex life. debbie and mickey point out that ian gets influenced by lip and that he doesn't have other friends. he thinks they seem it as something bad, something he needs to change. so what does he do? he decides that he and his husband are going to have gay friends and do the whole 'sex with others' thing. what's funny is that they both know they don't want that so what does ian do to convince mickey to tag along? he makes him jealous
Tumblr media
''...who knows what will happen?'' and mickey sees through his bullshit
Tumblr media
he's like ''are you really pulling this shit on me?'' so when he reminds ian what their decision was, ian tells him ''then i guess we should make some friends together.'' he tags along, they hang out with other gay people just like the ones trevor was friend with. but this time ian is comfortable saying that's not going to do it for him. but mickey? he's is a little shit and wants ian to learn a lesson so they stay till the night and all that shit. but THEN
Tumblr media
they come back from the shitty hang out and mickey knows! he knows that ian finally understands. ian didn't have fun, ian didn't want to be with them, didn't want to force that lifestyle cause this time he's not with someone who's asking him to do that. ian even says
Tumblr media
mickey's face is a clear ''no shit, sherlock.'' despite being himself with mickey, he's still struggling to accept that mickey wants ''all of the fucking versions of me.'' so he tries to force what he thinks will be the best for mickey, for them. which is also why he regrets getting the house on the west side after mickey's breakdown. he did sign the paper cause mickey was the first one to suggest checking it out, he knows that mickey deserves more than being a ''southside trash'' but he pushed it without giving mickey a chance to elaborate it. once ian finally realises that, he's willing to take a step back go back to where mickey is comfortable. this time though, mickey knows that ian is doing it for them and to show mickey his life is so much more than being what his father wanted him to become. and then the anniversary day? i have this headcanon that ian didn't say anything first because he wanted to check if mickey still cared about it, if he didn't regret getting married to ian. after a year together ian tried and 'failed' to make things work the way he thought they were supposed to be. is mickey still 'fucking crazy' for wanting that? so he waits, tries to remind him. they go to the alibi and ian has given up, he doesn't want to go out, he wants to go home and he's so desperate for mickey to remember their anniversary before the day ends. so he tells him but mickey reaction is anything but hurtful to ian. patting him on the shoulder and saying ''that's great.''
Tumblr media
he must be thinking, 'this is the same person that fought so hard for us to get married, went all crazy over it and planned to kill his father for ruining it-- and now that we've hit the one year mark he's forgotten and just pat me on the shoulder?' cause ian knows what it feels like to be loved by mickey and he doesn't see it in that moment, he's scared.
Tumblr media
the face he makes once he realises that he planned a big surprise for him, for them. for their love? its like he can finally breathe, they're okay, they're going to be okay. because they're ian and mickey and they love each other and go through everything together. ''thick and thin all that shit.''
and finally he knows he can stop trying so hard to fit somewhere he doesn't want to be, because he's loved for who he is, with all of his flaws that others made him think he wasn't worth the trouble. but just like ian makes mickey free, mickey himself makes ian feel free.
Tumblr media
bonus 'mickey's ''no way i would forget about that'' expression.'

hi babe! ur a great writer, just letting u know
can i request a carl x reader where when they get kicked out in like s6, shes like this rich kid who bribes the bank into getting their house back? like the cops are kicking them out and she just pulls up with a notice, shoves it in their face and the cops leave? i think it’d be hilarious
lots of love🤍🤍🤍
Sorry about the late reply. I'm trying to get back into things. I hope you enjoy it.♥
Rich Reader helps Carl when they are getting evicted
Carl couldn’t stand what was happening to the house, but he wasn’t going to bring you into it.
He thought with Fiona’s loan looming over his head it seemed possible. After the auction, he didn’t want you finding out.
That particular early morning, you heard the sound of your parents popping champagne in the kitchen, and you walked up to them and asked, “What are you guys celebrating?”
You dad answers, “You know our top salesmen got a house bought in the area we are trying to buy out; When any of them go down, it just means another one, and another one, and ano-”
“I get it.”
Seeing yet again no response from Carl, out of sheer boredom you look over at the stack of papers on the kitchen counter top and you ask, “Do you mind if I take a look?” Your moms eyes go wide and reach for the papers, which causes the papers to fall.
In distaste, your mom says, “Look what you did.”
You apologize and help pick them up and a familiar picture catches your eye. It was the Gallagher house, having been sold and marked with the day before.
You stand up and shout, “What is this?!”
Your father responds nonchalantly, “Don’t get all riled up…”
“Why the hell would you do this?”
“Not us. It’s just apart of the workload. We didn’t do it personally.”
“Yeah I’m sure. You hate Carl.”
“Yes, we don’t like that boy you hang out with. However, we didn’t go looking to do this. It’s just a bonus.” You shake your head at them and leave the house.
You are on the way to the Gallagher house when you see Carl sitting on a bench at the school track with Nick.
You go up to him and shove him before screaming, “Why didn’t you fucking tell me, bone head?”
Nick stands up, and Carl waves him off. Nick goes onto his bike and begins to ride the track. You shove Carl once more and wait for a response. He yells, “What are you on about women?!”
“Don’t fucking start, Carl!”
The threat calms him down as he lowers his voice and says, “What is it Y/N? Geez…”
“Uhmm…I don’t know. Your house being sold.”
“Shit.”
“Yeah, Shit. Why didn’t you tell me?””
“I didn’t want to worry you.”
“Carl...It’s me.”
“You wouldn’t have this problem.”
“Ouch…However, fair.” He snickers. You put a hand on his shoulder and comment, “You can tell me anything Carl. I’m here for you whatever you need.”
“Well, really there isn't much to do. They outbid us last night…Even after Fiona getting a loan, and everyone else scraping up what they could.”
“I could’ve helped.”
“No. Fiona didn’t want my money. I doubt she’d want yours. She wouldn't’ have taken it.”
“But, still-”
Carl's phone rings. It was Debbie, and she was freaking out. You could hear it as she yelled, “I need you like fucking now!” Carl looks over to you and says, “The cops are taking our stuff out.” You stand up and tell him, “Well, let's go.” Carl waves Nick over, and you head over to the house.
You can’t believe the sight of the he cops just taking their things out the house and throwing them like nothing. Carl notices that you haven’t moved from your spot and asks, “You’re not coming?”
“I have to do something. Before i go-” You hug Carl close, which gave you the chance to grab at Carl's gun.
You weren’t sure you’d need it, but something instinctive told you to take it,
Getting home, your quick to find the paper from the morning, you call the new owners, as you get ready to print a new contract that you’ve seen your parents make time and time again.
“Hello, thank you for your latest purchase without us. I was just calling to see if we could finish some final things today.” As they agree, you continue to say, “Great. Where can we meet?...A cafe? Would you mind texting the address to this number? Okay. I’ll see you there.”
Having all you paperwork, you rush to your room clearing out your savings and grabbing your checkbook. Then, you head over towards the city.
The couple look at you surprised, and they say,
“I’m sorry I thought we were supposed to be-”
“Meeting my parents?”
“I’m sorry for all the confusion.” You present an envelope to the table. “You recently bought that house; Now, my friend is going to be homeless. I know this isn’t your problem. However, I can still make this even better. I’ve got about 300,000 its way more than the cost you paid for the house and with that you could probably buy a new house. I have this contract of you releasing the house and your money from the auction will be given back. You just have to sign.”
“I don't know about this.”
You put on your best Carl impression before showing the gun in your pants and say, “Your going to fucking sign before I pop you right here.” You were shaking on the inside at all of it. However, they were quick to sign and rush out of there with the money. You let out air before grabbing the papers and trying to rush back to Carl. This had to have worked.
The police stand in front of Fiona, Carl, and Debbie. You take your keys out the car and slam the door shut and shout, “Stop right there!”
They all look at you funny.
You pull up the papers and look to Fiona before saying, “Fiona, I need you to sign this!”
“What is it?”
“Trust me.”
Fiona does so, and you unconsciously shove the papers at the cop. The cop asks, “What's this?”
You respond, “An agreement from the buyers. They've changed their minds about the house.”
“That means nothing.”
“It does when they sign the house off to Fiona, who has the means to pay any debts on the house and buy it back in full with this check.” You hand it off to the guy. “Getting the bank off our backs.”
They all cheer before Fiona comments, “Please leave my property. I’ve got cleaning to do.”
With grim faces, the police leave
Fiona hugs and kisses you in the cheek. Carl pulls you in right after and asks, “How is this even possible?”
“A combo of my parents and you.”
“Me?”
“Yeah. You.”
You pull out his gun and hand it back to him.
“Shit.” He said before laughing and hugging you again. “Hey, Y/N?”
“Yeah?”
“Forget your parents…You're one of us…Thank you.”

When He Went To Juvie
Content Tags: mentions of drugs, juvie obviously, mentions Sammi and Chuckie (sorry), mentions of shitty home life, loss of sleep, lack of eating
masterlist | spotify playlist
This is a flashback in which Carl and the reader are minors - there is obvious no smut here! I always keep my banner on my posts tho just cus I don't want minors coming to my blog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"What do you mean he's going away?"
You were in total disbelief. Your best friend... was going to juvie - actual juvie. He apparently got busted for drugs with stupid Sammi's stupid fucking kid.
Your parents were pretty furious that you'd demanded to see him - they said no. That didn't stop you though, no. You went right to Fiona. You begged her, pleaded with her.
"I need to go see him. Please. He's my best friend. My parents won't let me."
Well, Fiona loved you, she loved Carl, and she fucking hated your parents... so she gave in. You were allowed a five minute visit with him and that was it. After those five minutes, you couldn't see him again until the court date.
The two of you sat across from each other at the metal table. You couldn't read him, he was completely stone faced, he was showing no fear, absolutely none.
"Did they say how long you might be in for?" You asked, tilting your head curiously.
"Nah. I'm not worried though." He sounded so casual. How could he sound so fucking casual?
"You're not worried? Did I hear you correctly?" The disbelief is evident in your voice. When he shrugged, you were so close to jumping across the table and just smacking him. How in the hell was he not worried?
The five minutes was almost up... you hated the feeling that you might never see him again. Yeah, you were going to go to the court date with the Gallaghers, but you wouldn't actually get to see him. Sure, it was juvie, but your parents could forbid you from seeing him... well, not that that'd ever stopped you before.
"I'm gonna miss you." That's all you could manage out as the guards came to escort you out. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw his face fall.
"I... I'll miss you too."
For the next while, you just paced anxiously while waiting for the court date. You couldn't focus on anything. Your best friend was going away for god only knew how long... you didn't know what you were going to do without him. Sure, you were also friends with Debbie, you had other friends too. But this was Carl, your best friend since kindergarten. The boy who tormented you in the most loving way possible. The boy whose family welcomed you into their home without second thought when you needed comfort. Most importantly, the boy you refused to admit you were in love with. Would you ever get the chance to tell him while he was put away? The whole situation made your head spin.
You could barely even eat or sleep, the time felt too slow because you couldn't occupy yourself with anything else.
Then it was finally here - the court date you'd long awaited.
You couldn't stop bouncing your leg as you sat with the Gallaghers, to the point where Lip put his hand on your knee and told you to just take a deep breath.
"We won't know anything for a while, okay, kiddo? We gotta see how this plays out. Then you can be an anxious little disaster all you want."
At least Lip always knew how to make you smile, even in a situation like this...
"All rise."
Chuckie's trial was first. You had to stop yourself from gagging as Sammi tried to make it seem like he was a sweet innocent kid, and that the Gallaghers were all to blame.
Then came Carl's trial. You had to admit, they tried to make him look like an upstanding citizen... and it sort of worked.
Well, it worked until he spoke. You could not believe what was coming out of his mouth. The whole family was in disbelief. Except Lip, who stifled a laugh.
And then it was set. Carl was going to juvie for a year.
But to you, that felt like a lifetime.
You looked so distraught, he looked completely satisfied with himself until he saw your face when he looked back.

Does it ever hit you that because of Frank and Monica's emotional detachment, all of the Gallagher's seek out affection from romantic partners? But like to an almost obsessive degree.
Fiona's is obvious. She's hypersexual and falls in love easily. She will downplay her issues with Frank as something she's grown used to, but it's clear that it still affects her. She also does the same when it comes to Monica but I feel like her hostility towards other women comes from how she doesn't trust Monica, doesn't really trust herself, and sees those insecurities on other women. Ex: Her treatment of Mandy and distrust of her around Lip.
Lip is a classic case of a man dealing with his mommy issues by making it every woman's problem. He's hostile towards his romantic partners when they want a real commitment from him and he talks to women with so much disrespect that it's a wonder someone hasn't stomped his ass out yet. He's especially harsh towards his own sisters even though they've been the one's who have been there for him. He may hate Frank but he's noticeably giving and extremely forgiving towards men, even those he's only known for a short while. Almost like the story about the turtle was just as much about him hoping that he could fix Frank as it was about Frank crushing his hopes of a real father figure.
Ian being groomed is in no way his fault and is the fault of the creeps who pursued him. But I can't ignore the fact that Frank's abuse and neglect opened him up the further abuse he suffered at the hands of Kash and Ned. It's no coincidence that both Kash and Ned shower Ian with gifts and compliments about how impressive, smart, and mature he is.
Debbie 1. deals with comphet in the first few seasons, and 2. Feels ignored by her family so she tries to create her own family. Debbie is visibly the one most affected by Frank's issues and even when she for all intents and purposes gives up on him, it still affects her. Frank's hurtful words about her only finding love with someone "just as fucked up as she is" pushes her to put consider a dangerous situation with Heidi. She's also someone who struggles with control issues because she needs to help other people. She's a problem solver by nature. It's just that the two problems she wishes she could solve more than anything are out of her hands (Frank and Monica). She can't fix Frank's addiction, his selfishness, or his abusive tendencies. She can't fix Monica's wanderlust, her avoidance, or her aversion to long-term commitment.
Carl is so good at masking his emotions. It's easy to miss. But then you notice things like his attachment to Fiona, his absolute devotion to the girls he likes, and his need to protect. Carl is hypersexual, even though I've seen it rarely brought up in fandom, and longs for a long-term girlfriend. When he does get girlfriends he's all in from the beginning. When Carl loves someone he is all about them. He's so casual when it comes to talking about Frank and Monica, but that doesn't mean those feelings aren't there and they aren't affecting him.
Liam is still young so we don't get to see him in a relationship. He's the one Gallagher who's consistently treated like an actual kid. Probably the one who has the best chance at healthy emotional attachments. But then again, Fiona leaving most likely did a number on him and we weren't privy to what that looks like for him because the latter seasons forgot how to do long-term storytelling and emotional payoff. All we know is that he doesn't remember Monica, Frank being gone makes him an orphan and he's worried about where he's gonna live because Lip forgot that Liam was technically under Frank's care. We didn't get to see it, but I'd say Liam's first emotional crash is probably on the horizon.

Are there any other pitch ships you seriously live for?
My big one is Eridan <3< Calliope (#callidan let's make it happen)! There's a lot of karmic stuff linking them together - I'm not going to say it ALL here, but suffice to mention that cherubs are naturally attracted pitch-wise to people who resemble the half they lost in predomination, and Eridan literally made his username "cal" (caligula, so it's even 8 letters, lmao).
Personality-wise, though, fully-character-developed Eridan and Calliope are like a match made in hell. Eridan is violent, obsessed with murder, deliberately likes to style himself as an arrogant, evil despot, says a lot of slurs, is a complete moron who doesn't listen to people but believes in stuff very very strongly anyways, and, assuming he's finished his character arc, somehow still manages to be a force for good. This makes him similar to Caliborn in a lot of ways (Hussie even calls Eridan a sort of proto-Caliborn MULTIPLE times in the book commentary), and Calliope would have a lot to get infuriated by, especially since that last point would give Eridan that "i hate everything about you, BUT..." factor that makes a pitch relationship work.
OTOH, Calliope gets super fucking smug when she starts winning, Eridan would 100% see her as a poser wizard (who needs to load their MAGIC WAND with BULLETS????) as well as a poser troll. She would also definitely adopt a stance of "every life is precious," and already displayed compassion and forgiveness to a dangerous degree wrt Caliborn, and all of this would probably piss Eridan off. Also, Eridan is easy, and the fact that Calliope is actually willing to entertain him in pitch at all is probably enough to get him to date her in blackrom all by itself. LBR, all it really takes to date Eridan is just being willing to date Eridan. This is both a low and high bar to clear.
Given that murdering and genocide-obsessing literally kept his friends alive long enough to play the game, I just can't see Eridan ever becoming a pacifist, or even coming to see murder as a bad thing (even if he'd feel bad about and apologize for murdering his friends specifically).
It'd also be pretty bad if the Hope player (ideals, convictions, faith, and also turning fake stuff real) had wrong beliefs, so Eridan's character arc wouldn't so much see his obsession with murder dropped so much as having it reoriented, his focus becoming "I care about my friends and will do anything to make sure they succeed in creating a better world. I'd kill for them. I will kill for them. I am going to kill for them."
He's still kind of a token evil teammate as a result - the guy who pipes up at every town hall to go, "y'know, murder is on the table. I'm not saying that I want to do it or even that we should, but I'm just reminding you that it's a tool in our arsenal, and something our enemies might resort to" as well as the debbie downer who reminds people that meat comes from animals that used to have families.
Plus, given that his hipster stuff ties in with being a Hope player - the staunch and firm beliefs in there being "better" stuff, the unshakeable conviction and dedication toward being anti-mainstream, and the fact that it's one of his few genuine interests besides magic - that trait actually gets exacerbated in lieu of the fake pro-empire, dualscar-emulating stuff he was doing before.
So, basically, Eridan given the full redemption arc + character development combo would spit out an Eridan that's MORE annoying than he was before? Because, like, not only is he a turbo pretentious hipster now, but he's also the "heartbreaking: the worst person you know just made an excellent point" guy. He's comfortable in his own skin, no longer trying to be something he isn't. Instead, with absolute, non-negotiable, unshakeable faith in himself, he is 100% of what he is.
"What he is," of course, being a neurotic, murder-obsessed, low-empathy lunatic with zero social skills, a pretentious hipster, a cringe-ass wizard who won't shut up about it and has no self-awareness of how cringe he's being, still 100% aggro 100% of the time, and an obsessive simp. In a very leftist/existentialist way, he would fully own up to having done horrible things, and being willing to do them again, should the circumstances call for them. "Shameless" is probably a good word to use, here.
Meanwhile, Calliope is genuinely well-meaning as fuck, even if she doesn't fully grasp things like "humans going trickster mode is bad actually" and that her fascination/obsession with the trolls and kids as "characters" still borders on dehumanizing.
Still, it's clear that she operates from a place of love and admiration, and given a lease on life free from her brother and surrounded by friends, I do genuinely believe Calliope's arc culminates in her being the embodiement of the ideas that we must be good to each other, kind to each other, loving to each other, and trust and care for each other. After all, she has it within her; her alternate self was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the good of several universes.
Still, Calliope as this cosmic, karmic force of good - what the comic ultimately exonorates and treats as something worthy of protection and rescue - sets her up against Eridan ideologically really well. Calliope represents "we must do good" in the most optimistic sense - people will be kind back if you are kind to them, and to create a loving society, a caring society, we must care about others, we must believe in others.
Meanwhile, Eridan would represent "we must do good" in the most dark and pessimistic sense - we must be prepared to sacrifice for each other, we hold duties to one another, we must be our best selves because we owe it to each other, we must not accept complacency, we must be ever-vigilant of our worst tendencies, we must take responsibility. No society exists without sacrifice, no revolution is without bloodshed, and nothing is ever worth fighting for that won't eventually need to be fought for - and who will do the fighting? The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools, etc.
Like how pitch FefNep works for me on this axis of pragmatism vs. idealism - Feferi and Nepeta are both fundamentally duking it out over what it means to create and administer a society, with Nepeta representing unbridled freedom, while Feferi brings to the table controlling restraint. Neither is fully correct on their own - Nepeta is anarchic, and so her ideals are inherently unstable, while Feferi is fascistic, which can cause great harm. It's Hegalian dialectics. Thesis, antithesis, and their union/rivalry is the synthesis into a greater nuanced balance between the two.
Callidan works for me in the same way: Calliope and Eridan are both fundamentally aiming to create a world that's good, and Calliope says, we must be kind, while Eridan says, we must be cruel. They're both correct, and both have an ideal that can't stand on its own. Calliope's hardline stance of pure compassion lets bad apples take advantage, while Eridan's hardline stance of sacrifice and personal responsibility leads to misery and unfulfillment. Together, they strike a harmony.
And also they'd be so funny together. Like

𝑫𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑴𝒆 𝑪𝒓𝒂𝒛𝒚
The next morning, you’re back on the road once again. You’re in the passenger seat now, letting Bucky drive.
You snack on some granola bars that you’d packed, offering one to Bucky. He takes one, offering up a small ‘thanks’ in return.
Several hours later, you notice the small town slowly circling around the truck.
“Bucky. Can we stop?” You asked.
“We can make at least five more hours today.” His brows furrow.
“I haven’t pissed since yesterday. I’m gonna die.” You complained.
“There’s a gas station..30 minutes away. Can’t you wait?” He argues.
“No. Pull over.” You huffed. “Look! That diner right there. Debbie’s.* We can get lunch.”
“That’s gonna waste at least an hour. We don’t have time.” His grip tightens on the wheel.
“We’ve got like an extra two days! The drive isn’t that fucking far! Pull over before I piss my fucking pants, asshole!” You blow up at him. Tony intentionally planned it so that there was time for a little bit of dilly-dallying.
Begrudgingly, he turned into the diner parking lot. You zoomed out of the car and straight to the bathroom inside of the diner.
After taking care of your business, you met back up with Bucky in the line to the counter.
When it was your turn, you waited as Bucky ordered some burger before you ordered your own food.
Bucky reached for his wallet at the same time you reached for yours.
“I’ll get it,” you said.
“It’s fine. I’ve got it.” Bucky brushed you off. It made you..mad? He said it almost smugly, as if he was doing you such a favor.
“No, I’ll pay. I’ll do it.”
“I’m already doing it.” He snarked back.
You quickly tried to shove your card against the tappy-machine as  Bucky scrambled to do the same. You engaged in a debit-card-sword-fight for several seconds before the lady behind the counter—an older woman, with short and thin gray hair and bright blue eyes, chuckled.
“You two make a mighty fine couple, I can tell.” Janet H. said, a fond smile on her face.
“We’re not together.” Bucky and you said sharply at the same time.
Distracted by this, you fumbled and Bucky won the war.
You walked towards a booth in the 50s-style diner, sliding into it and looking at the receipt. Order #157.
When the number was called by a slightly younger elderly woman, you took the initiative to walk back up to the counter.
“Thank you,” you said, taking the white bag.
“No problem. You here for the festival?” She asked, making small talk. Sharon C.
“Festival?” You echoed, curious.
“Yeah. The town’s got an annual Blast-from-the-Past festival thing. Always draws in plenty of tourists.” She slid a white half-sheet of paper with a little infographic on it.
“Thanks,” you murmured, looking down at it as you walked back to the booth.
If Bucky was curious about what the paper was, he didn’t voice it. You assumed that the Serum had probably boosted up his hearing, so maybe he already knew.
As Bucky unpacked the white, grease-stained paper bag of food, you scanned over the paper.
“Bucky. We should stay for this. This is pretty cool. It's like a 'this-town-through-the-decades' kind of thing. There's a 40's style dance thing tonight." You state, reading the first event listed. The festival is a week long, starting tonight, Monday, and ending on Sunday. “Look! Tomorrow is ‘30s-‘40s night. There’s a dance, and food, and all kinds of cool shit.” You grinned.
He stared at you like you had three—no, twelve—heads.
“We definitely don’t have time for that.” He grumbled as he munched on his burger.
“Bucky, we still have like, 5 or 6 days before we can even check into the resort thing. To get there is a 3-4 day drive. We’ve got plenty of time.”
As he shuffled awkwardly at the presentation of the facts, you could tell that time wasn’t the main reason he wanted to skip it.
“C’mon. Please.” You begged.
He stared at you, unsure.
You remained resilient.
“Fuck. Fine.” He broke, clearly unhappy about it.
“Yes!” You cheered. “I think we passed a store that was selling stuff for the festival. I’m sure they’ve got some themed outfits.” You raved.
“Okay. There’s the motel down the street, right? We could just get a room there.” He murmured. “I don’t have a good feeling about this.”
“Why not? It’s just a little dance.” You huffed.
"We're both Avengers. We could be recognized."
"So? Either way, we're in a tiny ass town in the middle of nowhere. If we were recognized, it wouldn't even matter."
He looked down at his gloved left hand. He always wore thick jackets or long-sleeved shirts, paired with gloves.
"Nobody's gonna care." You reassured quietly. It was true that the two of you didn't get along very well, but you didn't think it was fair to make personal attacks. You knew his arm, and basically his entire past, really, were sensitive topics.
“Okay.” He conceded. “C’mon. Let’s go get hotel rooms.”
Tumblr media
You lift your suitcase and backpack out of the backseat, before heading into the lobby. Bucky follows as you approach the receptionist.
She's an older lady, some sections of her hair gray, other sections a warm brown. Her eyes match the brown, and she smiles when she sees the two of you walk in.
"Hello. Welcome to the Brandon Briar Hotel. How may I help you two today?" She asked, looking up at the two of you. She has wrinkles by the corners of her eyes, and smile lines around her mouth. Her voice is warm, as is everything about her. A quick glance to her nametag revealed that her name is Barbara C.
"We'd like two rooms, please." You smiled politely.
"Alright, and how long will the two of you be staying, dear?"
"Just for tonight, if that's okay."
"Wonderful. Is it okay if it's a connecting room? The festival always brings in a lot of tourists." She smiled proudly.
"Really?” You ask, making small talk. You feel a pang of joyful spite as you see Bucky shift awkwardly next to you. Socializing is not something he’s known for.
"Yes, Brandon Briar has it every year. Here's a flyer, if you're thinking about attending." She slipped a brightly colored flyer over the counter, sliding it in front of you. The main colors, yellow, blue, and white, were eye-catching and pretty. This one was much more in-depth than the flyer the girl at the diner had given you.
"Now, is the connecting room okay, sweetheart?" She asked again, though there was not a single note of annoyance in her voice.
"Oh--yes. That will be perfect." You glanced back up at her, eyebrows raised subconsciously.
You pay quickly for both of the rooms before Bucky--who had been standing behind you silently--could fight you on it. Barbara hands you the two key cards, and you hand Bucky one. Taking the flyer with you, you give Barbara one final 'thank you' and a smile, before heading to the elevator.
Bucky presses the button for the 2nd floor, where your rooms are. You study the flyer.
"Neither of us have anything to wear to it." He tries to reason as the elevator door opens.
Walking down the hallway, you continue to argue with him. "I'm sure there's at least one store that sells stuff specifically for the festival. Barbara--the receptionist--said that the festival brings in a bunch of tourists, so they have to have something around here." You said optimistically as you both opened the doors to your hotel rooms.
Tumblr media
It had been easy to find a store selling dresses made to look like they were from the 1940's. The Brandon Center, the little store that could only be found in Brandon Briar, had an overwhelming amount of them. You'd left Bucky to find whatever he needed, you instead opting to browse through all the pretty dresses. There was a large selection, filled with pretty prints and colors.
Bucky, perhaps ten minutes ago, had interrupted your browsing to tell you that he was going to wait in the car. You had simply nodded, quickly glancing at the bag he carried.
A stunning red dress caught your eye. It had a little belt to go around your waist, with 3/4 satin-cuffed sleeves and a matching satin heart-shaped collar.
Sure, there were other dresses in a similar color, but once you saw this one, there was no going back. You checked the tag, making sure that it would fit.
Grinning once you saw that it did, you took the hanger off the rack before looking through the jewelry stand. When you found nothing that fit your style, you sighed.
Walking to the register, and you were greeted by a woman, probably in her sixties. Her hair was dyed blonde, which looked good with her blue eyes. She wore black eyeliner all the way around her eye, with thick mascara to match. She grinned, a heavy country accent coming in thick when she spoke. Though you'd only spoken to a few locals, they all seemed to have the same accent.
"Hiya! Will this be all for you today?" She had a nametag on her floral blouse. Brenda.
Nodding, you reply. "Yes."
"Okay. Oh..this is a pretty thing. You plannin' on comin' out by the old diner for the dance tonight?" She laid the dress out on the counter, examining it.
"Yeah. It's..it's in that little square, right? I saw the string lights this morning when I was driving by, but I didn't really have time to look."
"Yes, yes. The decorations are always gorgeous. Wait a minute..oh, this is from Mr. Lee." She said, beginning to fold the dress. When she noticed your confused expression, she grinned.
"A while back, we had a guy donate a bunch of old dresses like this after his wife passed. His wife was friends with that lady Peggy Carter, funnily enough. Anyway, we kept a bunch of those dresses in the back for a few years. Some were altered, made bigger or smaller or even just turned into somethin’ brand new. Forgot all about them. Until now, that is."
You nodded, though the mention of Steve's almost-kind-of-basically girlfriend startled you. A younger girl, maybe a college student, stepped out from the door next to the register. The creaky wooden floor announced the presence of another customer, as did the bell on the door.
"Aunt Brenda, can you help Ms. Owens? She wanted to look at that green dress I told you about." The girl said. Her hair was brown and straight, going down to her waist.
"Oh, yes." Brenda turned back to you. "Stacy will ring you up." She explained, placing the folded dress into a white paper shopping bag.
She walked out from behind the counter, Stacy taking her place.
"Sorry about that." The girl—Stacy—apologized. "That'll be $23.99. Hero's discount."
When she glanced up to you, she smiled a little. "Don't worry. You blend in a lot. Most of the people here are older, and anyone who isn't is just a young couple coming here for the festival. My great aunt and my grandma live up here, so I stay here every summer to help with the store." She assured.
Once you paid, she waved you goodbye as you walked out of the shop. Bucky was waiting in the driver's seat of the truck, scrolling on his phone.
"Y'know it starts at 6:00, right?" He asked when he heard the truck door open.
"It's 3:15, we'll be fine." You rolled your eyes, buckling your seatbelt. You didn't say much on the drive to the hotel, instead thinking about what else you were going to wear.
Tumblr media
Bucky stood inside of his hotel room, not sure what to do. You had decided to close your door to his room, and he decided to do the same. Just because your rooms were connected didn’t mean you would go into each other’s rooms. That was weird, right?
He showered quickly, before getting dressed. He felt stupid as he glanced at himself in the mirror. He knew how he was supposed to look, but none of this felt...right. He tied his hair into a low ponytail, just to keep it out of his face.
He opened his door to your room, just to be met with your door closed. He knew it was going to be closed. Of course it would be closed. There was no reason he should feel so...disappointed.
Disappointed? No. No. Bucky was sure of it. He barely tolerated you. You were annoying, and you liked starting fights for no reason. Ever since he’d arrived at the Avenger’s Compound, you were nothing but cold and nasty towards him. The first time he’d met you, you’d made an angry face at him before ignoring his existence.
But he couldn't deny the feeling of excitement he got when he saw your name light up on his phone.
Ready.
That was the entire text message. And somehow, a single word made his stomach feel light. Without typing a reply, he stepped into the hallway of the hotel, before he saw you.

He's Here, He's Staying
“This movie fucking sucks,” Mickey complained. “You couldn’t have picked something better, Raggedy Ann?”
“It doesn’t suck,” Debbie said while Carl voiced his agreement with Mickey. “It’s a classic.”
“It’s shit,” he said flatly.
“Well, if you wanted something different, you should’ve said so instead of saying I don’t know every time I asked,” Debbie huffed.
“Like you would’ve listened,” Carl muttered, who’d made his displeasure for the film loud and clear.
“Oh, shut up, Carl! Like your idea was any better.”
Mickey propped his feet on the coffee table, needing to change the position of his legs.
“Fiona hates it when you do that,” Carl informed him.
“Not my fucking problem,” Mickey replied, though they all knew he’d lower them back down to the floor once she stopped screaming at Sammi in the other room.
The woman was getting her ass handed to her after a remark she’d made regarding Ian. Fiona had come home and flipped her shit after Debbie told her what Sammi had said when they were clearing up the dinner table.
“Ian, did you take your meds?”
The kitchen was quiet besides the sounds Liam made. Ian was in the midst of wiping down his brother’s shirt, and no one knew if he was ignoring the question or simply hadn’t heard.
“Why are you asking?” Debbie said snidely.
Mickey had to force himself to stay calm. He bit down on his tongue, focusing all his attention on the soft smile Ian wore, while Liam giggled about the “oopsie” he’d made.
“I just don’t want to see him have another one of his crazy episodes,” Sammi said matter-of-factly.
And that was when Mickey saw red.
“The fuck did you just say?” He snarled, coming over into her space.
Debbie and Carl rushed to his side to stop him from doing something he’d regret.
Probably not regret, but he got the point.
“Ian’s not crazy,” Mickey said through grit teeth.
“I didn’t say he was-”
“Shut up, Sammi!” Debbie snapped.
Mickey had wanted to say fuck it and take Ian out for a while but even though this was one of Ian’s better days, it was probably for the best to stay here.
It was Debbie’s idea to watch a movie. So that’s what they did, piling into the living room for some shitty early 2000s film that she chose.
The TV had to be turned up several times. Sammi tried to defend herself but Fiona was not having it. That’s what he liked about the oldest Gallagher; she didn’t take anyone’s shit.
Ian’s head laid on his shoulder. Mickey still struggled with openly showing his boyfriend affection in front of others, even though he came to realize that none of the Gallaghers cared about his sexuality, so this time he’d tentatively wrapped his other arm around Ian, pulling him in closer.
He glanced in the direction of the kitchen where it was still going on. “Jesus,” he muttered. He was starting to get a headache. He couldn’t even tell if Ian was really paying attention to the TV or not. “Ay, Gallagher?”
“What?” Ian mumbled.
“You doing okay?” Mickey said softly.
“I’m fine,” Ian sounded tired.
“You sure? We can go upstairs if you want. Unless you want to watch this pink shit.” Debbie spared him a glare for his remark.
Ian smiled very slightly. “We can go upstairs.”
“Fine by me,” Mickey waited until Ian peeled himself off of him to stand. “We’re going to bed. Tell me if anything good happens.”
Debbie opened her mouth and he knew what was going to come out.
“With your bitch of a sister, not the damn movie.”
The younger Gallagher’s snickered. Mickey flipped them both off, trying to suppress a smile of his own.
“Let’s go, Red,” Mickey spotted him yawning into his forearm.
“Kay,” Ian muttered sleepily.
They went up the stairs towards the boys room. Before they went in, he’d clasped a hand on Ian’s shoulder. Now that they were alone, he felt compelled to reassure his boyfriend, needed him to know that Sammi didn’t know what the fuck she was talking about.
“Ian,” he said, pausing to consider what he was about to say. “Sammi’s a bitch. You ain’t crazy. You know that, right?”
Those eyes of Ian’s that used to hold so much light were dull now, tired. He mustered up a tiny smile that Mickey wanted to believe was genuine. “Yeah.”
“I’m serious, man. She doesn’t know shit.”
Mickey’s arms looped around Ian for a hug, whose face was leaning on his shoulder.
He’d never tell anyone but it broke his goddamn heart to see Ian like this.
“Let’s go lay down,” Mickey whispered, even though there was no need to. “Kay?”
Ian nodded without a word. He let Mickey guide him in there, sitting down on the edge of the bed, his face still blank. Mickey opened the drawers, taking out a pair of sweatpants for his boyfriend to change into.
“You been wearin’ those for two days now. Let’s get these on you.”
“I just want to lay down, Mick,” Ian said quietly.
“Then let me put ‘em on you.”
“I don’t need you to play nurse for me,” Ian wasn’t looking at him anymore, his eyes fell to the floor. But this wasn’t out of annoyance like he sometimes felt whenever he thought Mickey or somebody else was nagging him, but rather shame.
And well, fuck, Mickey could understand that. He wouldn’t want anyone to treat him like this either.
“Hey,” he placed two fingers under Ian’s chin, gently pulling his face up. “Look, I know this ain’t easy for you, relying on people and shit; but I’m doing this because I want to, alright?”
Ian snorted, quietly and deprecatingly. “You didn’t sign up for this. You should go, find someone who isn’t so fucked up in the head.”
Mickey’s stomach lurched at the out Ian was giving him. He was too far gone now, and there was no way in hell he was leaving. “Shut the fuck up,” he bent down to kiss Ian’s hair. “You were fucked up in the head long before any of this bipolar shit started.”
This drew out a more genuine laugh from Ian, however slight it might have been.
“And don’t try to give me anymore damn outs, Gallagher. I ain’t going anywhere, alright?” I’m already in this.
Ian’s face had fallen again. “Mickey-”
“You want me to go?” He said, coming off as casual despite the way his heart hammered in his chest. I can’t lose you.
Ian lifted his head, meeting Mickey’s eyes. “No,” he admitted. “But you shouldn’t have to stay with someone like me.”
“There ain’t no should, Red,” Mickey needed him to understand this. “I’m stayin’ cause I want to.”
I fuckin’ love you
Fucking terrified him how much he meant it. As much as he used to deny it, pretending he and Ian weren’t anything more than fuck buddies, it was impossible to do that anymore.
“You-” Mickey’s voice got thick, “you gotta know that, Ian.”
He just sat there looking lost, not saying anything for the longest time.
“Okay.”
It was barely above a whisper. His face was so blank, yet so expressive all at the same time. But what mattered the most was how much he seemed like he wanted to believe Mickey meant what he said. If it had to take time for him to realize that then so be it.
“Okay,” Mickey repeated, a smile emerging. “Think you can get into these pants, Red, or you want help?”
“Help me.” It was a lot for Ian to say, Mickey was damn proud of him.
“Alright.”
The process was slow but Mickey didn’t push him anymore than necessary. Within a minute or two, Ian was in some fresh clothes, now laying on the bed, eyes shut but merely resting.
Mickey climbed in there too, brushing a few pieces of Ian’s hair out of his face.
Go to sleep, he thought, watching Ian’s chest rise and fall in spite of the chaos going on downstairs. You don’t need to hear anymore of that shit show.
For a couple of minutes, or it might have been longer, it was just the two of them in their own little world. Ian fell asleep, his head rolled over into Mickey’s space.
With one hand on Ian’s cheek, he softly kissed the redhead’s forehead.
Laying here was starting to make him sleepy, so Mickey let himself get comfortable, soon to be lulled to sleep by the warmth and unique smell of Ian radiating towards him. Except just when he was on the verge of nodding off, he felt a small hand shaking his arm.
It was the littlest Gallagher. A blanket was over his head, with only his face peeking out of it. His big brown eyes were wide, not that he could blame him with all the ruckus going on.
“Ay, kid,” Mickey carefully sat up so he wouldn’t jostle Ian and wake him up. “What are you doing in here?”
“I’m scared,” Liam whispered. “I want Ian.”
Well shit. Mickey glanced at his boyfriend, then back at the kid. He wasn’t really equipped to handle kid things. Wasn’t like he had much experience with his own kid. Ian did more of that than he ever did. He’d try, though. Liam was pretty easy going, hardly ever cried and shit. It was better for Ian to sleep, he probably wasn’t much up for being his brother’s comforter anyway.
“Let’s go over there,” Mickey pointed at Carl’s empty bed. He laid a hand on the kid’s back, gently easing him over there. Sitting down with his back against the wall, he intended for the kid to be beside him but Liam had other plans. He crawled into Mickey’s lap, gripping his shirt with tiny fists.
It threw him off at first, just for a second or two. He quickly recovered, focusing his attention on the four year old who was currently staring up at him like Mickey could stop all the yelling from happening.
Something shattered down below. Probably a plate or something, he guessed. Liam jumped, whimpering.
This is probably the part where he should comfort him.
“Uh,” Mickey said awkwardly, tentatively patting him on the back, “it’s okay, Liam. You’re good.”
Eh, not good. Kid was shaking a bit. Fuck.
Liam's face was in his chest now, seeking comfort that Mickey didn’t know if he could give.
Shit, Mickey thought.
He remembered back before all the bipolar shit took over, there’d been one night Yev was screaming his head off. Ian got out of bed to take care of him and didn’t come back for some time. At some point, it stopped, but Ian still hadn’t come back to bed so by than, Mickey slid out and went to find him.
Ian was standing, holding Yev in his arms, murmuring to him, a hand rubbing up and down his back.
Maybe he could channel some of that for Liam.
“Ay, Liam,” he whispered, and the kid peeked up at him, still holding onto Mickey with a death grip around his middle, “it’s okay.”
“Fi’s mad,” Liam’s eyes were watery.
“Yeah,” he conceded, “but she ain’t mad at you. Your sister’s just trying to defend Ian from that crazy bitch.”
For obvious reasons, Liam couldn’t care less about that part. He sniffled, pressing himself into Mickey more if that was possible. “I don’t like it when she’s mad.”
For a moment, he didn’t see Little Gallagher anymore but rather himself.
This whole thing made him remember, all too vividly, of his own childhood when he used to hide under the covers to block out the noise of Terry and Laura screaming at each other. Beer bottles crashing into the wall, furniture turned over, doors slammed shut. Unlike Liam, he never had anyone to make it all better. If he wouldn't have gotten teased by his brothers for being a pussy, Mickey would’ve went to them for comfort. But in the Milkovich household, you didn’t do things like that, even if you were a literal child.
“Yeah...” He muttered. “I get it.”
He hoped Liam was starting to settle down by now, that hope was thwarted when a heavy crash was heard from down there. It was so loud, so sudden, that even Mickey flinched. It definitely frightened Liam; he started to cry a little and the last thing Mickey wanted was for Ian to wake up from all this noise. But by some miracle, Ian stayed asleep, not even stirring.
Mickey still didn’t know what the fuck he was doing, so he adjusted them both, letting Liam lean one side of his face against his chest so he could cover his other ear with his hand to muffle out all the noise coming up there.
Well, it must not have been that much of a shitty idea. Liam, though still somewhat tense, relaxed a bit now that he wasn’t listening to anymore screaming. Mickey didn’t hear him sniffling either so it was a fucking win as far as he was concerned.
Liam yawned softly. Must have been past the kid’s bedtime. With any luck he’d go to sleep.
“Go to sleep, Kid,” Mickey muttered, not knowing if Liam heard him or not. “I got ya.”
He didn’t know how long it was, his phone was elsewhere, probably downstairs still, but eventually Liam was slumped against him, sound asleep.
And it was okay. He’d never had much experience with little kids before him, before Yev, so had this been months prior, he never would’ve believed himself to be capable of being here in this moment comforting him.
At some point, his eyelids fluttered shut. He didn’t stir until he felt Liam being carefully taken out of his arms.
“Wha-”
Fiona hovered above him, adjusting a sleepy Liam in her arms. “Hey,” she whispered. “Sammi’s gone. I went to check on Liam and found him here. Was he okay?”
Mickey rubbed his face, trying to wake himself up. “Yeah,” he said, biting back a yawn. “He was kinda scared but he’s alright.”
Fiona smiled at Liam. “Did Mickey make you feel better?”
Liam nodded, smiling shyly at him before turning to bury his face in her neck.
Mickey couldn’t help but flush.
“Thanks,” she told him with a warm smile. “Really appreciate you doin’ that.”
“Eh, it was nothing.”
“You’re a good guy, Mickey,” she said with a fleeting glance at Ian. “He doing okay?”
“He’s gettin’ there. Didn’t wake up once.”
“That’s good,” she let out a breath. “We’re gonna need some new dishes. Sammi destroyed quite a few of them.”
“Fucking lunatic.”
“You’re telling me,” Fiona rolled her eyes, then said to Liam. “Time for bed, Buddy. Tell Mickey goodnight.”
He didn’t do that, however, but he did extend his arms towards him.
“Wanna hug,” he said.
This surprised Mickey, but he didn't have time to dwell on that. Fiona disposed of the kid into his lap so Liam could throw his arms around his neck. Mickey reciprocated, feeling self conscious now that she was watching them.
“Night, Mickey,” Liam whispered.
“Uh, night, Kid.”
The light that came into the room was abruptly taken away by the shut door. Mickey sat there, taking in what just happened, a warmth pooling in his stomach that filled him completely.
“Mmm, Mickey?” A soft groan was heard from the other side of the room.
Ian was only half awake, turning over and expecting him to be right there next to him.
Mickey slid off Carl’s bed to go back to Ian’s, curling into his side. “Ay, go back to sleep, Red,” he said, a fond smile tugging at his lips. “I’m here. Not gonna leave you.”

I had a lot of thoughts for this AU, actually, so I'm really glad it got line jumped so I was forced to put them down into words lol
Steve becomes one of Nana's foster kids, but he spends a majority of this series with the Leverage crew working a job (as the name of this series suggests), and they fill similarly parental role.
As always, if you see any typos, no you didn't ;P
----
After his father's arrest, everything is a blur. Steve can remember flashes, sure, but nothing concrete. Nothing more than two FBI agents in the door of his classroom, the cold steel of interrogation room chairs, an agent's ponytail with split ends, a kind smile but clammy hand on his elbow, the broken A/C of the car when he finally left the FBI office, and the slippery feel of the garbage bag he's given to pack 14 years of a life he'll never see again.
Nothing comes back into focus until he's faced with an older black woman, standing outside a two-story house. The man with a kind smile but clammy hands introduces her, but Steve doesn't actually hear the name.
"You can call me Nana," the woman says, looking at the man like she doesn't know why he's still there when his work is obviously done.
"Well, uh, Steve, feel free to call if you need anything. We'll keep in touch," the man says, nodding before half-running down the walk way.
"Never liked him," Nana says, clicking her tongue. "Too damn squirrely for my tastes. Now, Steve, come inside and we'll go over some ground rules."
Steve follows her mechanically, gripping his trash bag tightly and wondering far too late why he wasn't allowed to pack his own suitcases. The house is a cacophony of noises: feet running across wood floors, a TV blaring from the living room, shouts coming from every direction, a microwave beeping while the oven timer rings, a crash from the next room over that makes Steve wince.
Nana stands in the doorway, takes a deep breath, and then shouts at the top of her lungs, "Y'all had better stop all this racket right the fuck now before I cancel pizza night!"
The house goes silent, and Steve feels his shoulders tense even more. He hates the silence. Silence means anger, and anger means punishment. He clenches his jaw, trying to keep himself small as Nana nods and leads the way into a dining room.
A girl appears in the room shortly after, carrying a mug and a soda. She places the mug in front of Nana and the soda in front of an empty seat, gesturing for Steve to sit. "Welcome. I can take your bag, if you want," she offers, looking at the trash bag with bright eyes.
"Don't make trouble, Breanna," Nana says, dismissing her easily.
Steve watches her leave before sitting. He licks his lips, opens the soda as quietly as he can manage, and waits for Nana to take a sip from her mug before saying, "Thank you for taking me in, ma'am."
"I said to call me Nana, none of that ma'am business unless you're in trouble, and you're not in trouble," she says, waving her hand dismissively. "Now, the rules. No complaining about sharing a room. No TV remote access after seven because that's when my shows start. We all eat dinner together on Wednesday night. You go to school every day unless you're sick, and you tell me when you're feeling sick. You got all that?"
"Yes, m....Nana."
"Good. Now, I know you're used to a fancier living than this, but I expect you to adjust without too much complaint. You still get your own bed, and whatever you brought is yours to keep, but money is tight. We save where we can, and I expect you to help with that. Turn off lights, use less water, unplug things when you're not using them."
Steve nods again, inexplicably feeling a little better as Nana speaks. She's not treating him like a spoiled brat, but she's not coddling him, either. She gets another boy (an older one named Hardison) to give him a tour of the house. He shows Steve the mezzuzahs on each door and the Kaaba directional marker in each room---"We're a multi-denominational household, kid, Nana will get whatever you need if she doesn't have it already," Hardison says, grinning widely at him---and makes sure he knows which spots are good for hiding when he needs a few minutes.
He ends the tour at Steve's new room. It has two bunk-beds, three of the bunks with rumpled sheets and one bottom bunk devoid of sheets altogether. Hardison gives Steve blue sheets, welcomes him, and then leaves Steve to unpack by himself.
It's new, it's unfamiliar, it's terrifying. Steve hopes, despite himself, that it's not a temporary stop.
----
"I don't care! He can't stay!"
"We're already in London, Hardison. We can hardly send him back on a plane by himself."
"Isn't that how he got here in the first place? He's 17, not seven."
Steve moves his gaze from Hardison to Sophie to Eliot, feeling like he's watching a tennis match. He's sandwiched between Nate and Parker, a hand on his shoulder holding him back from trying to defend himself. Not that he's upset about it. Keeping everyone from turning their frustration on him sounds like a great idea.
"Yeah, and how did he get here?" Parker asks, dashing Steve's hopes right as they're forming.
He shifts uncomfortably as everyone looks at him, ducking his head and staring at the floor. A small part of him is frustrated, angrily protesting the familiar move when its usual target has long been absent.
"Hey, give him some room," Hardison says, moving forward to push Nate and Parker back a few steps. He stands at an angle to Steve, leaving him plenty of room to move away if he wants. "Nobody's angry, kid. Well, I'm a little mad, but only because you could be putting yourself in danger. So, how'd you catch up to us?"
Steve wonders for a brief moment about whose wrath he'd rather endure. In the end, he decides Breanna is scarier than Hardison, so he lies. "Nana and I overheard you on the phone with Parker at Hannukah dinner, and then Nana said she gets worried about you sometimes," he says, meeting Hardison's eyes before glancing away. He makes himself small again, but it's on purpose this time, broadcasting shame as he adds, "I still have, um, access to my savings account...from my....from them. Enough for a plane ticket and cab ride, at least."
"Aww, Nana worries about us," Parker says, smiling brightly as she nudges Eliot with her elbow. "That's sweet."
"If it weren't a lie," Sophie says, her lips pursed and her eyebrows raised slightly as she walks closer to Steve. She taps his shoulder, his temple, and his hand. "Lowered head but not as low as before. Shoulders drawn in but tense to hold them there. Fingers twitching just slightly. Impressive, I will admit, but I'm a professional, darling."
Steve sighs and lifts his head, his shoulders relaxing some as he frowns. "You didn't have to call me out on it," he mumbles.
"Breanna got you here, didn't she? Ain't no way you'd lie to protect anyone else."
"She could ruin me, Hardison."
"I can ruin you, too, did you forget about that?"
Steve considers him for a moment before shrugging.
"Well," Nate says, clapping his hands together and pulling everyone's attention to him. "Steve is here now, we might as well use him. Sophie, give him an Italian accent and some suede shoes."
"I can already speak Italian," Steve says, "and I have my own suede shoes to match a Cesare Attolini suit." He feels something like guilt twinge in his stomach when Hardison glances at him. Steve's mother may have forfeited custody of him, but she still sends gifts every now and then. Steve usually sells them, slips the cash into drawers and wallets and couch cushions so they can be discovered by Nana and his foster siblings.
The suit and shoes, though? Steve couldn't bring himself to sell them. If there was one thing he missed about life before Nana's foster home, it was the clothes. It was the way his clothes made him feel like a better version of himself, a version everyone would admire and approve of. So, yeah, he'd kept the clothes and shoes his mother sent him two months ago, and he'd packed them for this trip just because.
He'd glad they seem to be coming in handy.
After processing his words, Nate blinks, a smile growing on his face like he's discovered a treasure he won't be letting go of any time soon.

matt despises reader but after noticing that she is having a hard period between anxiety and depression he gifts her a basket full of goodies, like books (she loves to read), fluffy socks, candles and she thinks it's a joke but he ends up confessing
Fall
Tumblr media
Pairing:Matt Sturniolo X Female Reader
Synopsis: Matt is blind to the readers true feelings as he’s so focused on his own. It takes some separation and an Instagram post for him to realize he messed up🎈
Warnings⚠️: None, hope you enjoy though because I’m hating my writing as of lately 🥹❤️
Song for the imagine: I Wonder- The Willowz
I’m laughing, but you’re laughing at me
And I think “oh how could this be?”
And I wonder if it could be the same
He kept looking at me the whole night, and it was starting to annoy me. His face made my blood boil. Like what do you want? It was like he was grilling me
Matt hated me, and to be honest I wasn’t sure why. I didn’t even care really, but he made hanging out with Chris and Nick boring. He was such a Debby downer, and he ruined my already shitty mood constantly.
Nick always told me to ignore him which I did for the most part, but honestly his weird attitude has been making my anxiety worse.
“What do you want?” He asked him finally getting fed up
“Nothing” he said getting defensive
“Well then quit staring” I said rolling my eyes
“You wish” he said scoffing
I started to hangout with them more because my at home life had become difficult. I was slipping into a depression I’ve never been through before. With that came my anxiety, and I just wanted to be away from my room
Of course Nick and Chris didn’t mind it. I was actually shocked Matt found it to be annoying since he struggles with anxiety, but I ignored it.
I often sat with them reading. I didn't mind that they didn’t have plans. I just wanted to be in their presence. It made me feel better.
“You come here almost everyday, and then you just sit around reading” Matt says laughing
“I like to read” I said flipping the page
“Yeah I know” he said shaking his head
“What’s it to you anyways? Not like I’m bothering you” I said laughing at him
“It’s just why not stay home if all you’re doing is reading” he said
“Well Matthew maybe it’s because some people have a difficult time at home, and want to get away from it” I said looking up at him
“Doesn’t mean you have to come here” he said rolling his eyes
“You’re such a dick all the time” I said to him
“The doors right there” he said shrugging his shoulders
“You just don’t get it, do you?” I responded slamming my book shut and scooting away from the table harshly
“Oh come on” he said rolling his eyes
I ignored him and grabbed my stuff, and decided to head home. Matt was such a fucking dick, and I was so over his prissy attitude.
He made me feel like shit, and it was getting harder to be myself and try and have fun. I never wanted to see him again.
I really tried to ignore him, but I really couldn’t. His over analyzing me made me super self conscious, and I was beginning to hate myself.
After that day I had decided to stay home and not really bother them. I truly didn’t want them to think I just used them or anything. Slowly this made me slip into a depression.
Chris and Nick had been texting me daily, but I would rarely ever answer them. Too embarrassed to tell them that Matt had made me hate going to their house. I knew this would make them upset with their brother
I had been sitting in my living room reading Where The Wind Blows when suddenly I heard a loud knock at my front door.
I was a bit concerned as to who would be knocking at my door at 9PM on a Thursday night. However I shut my book and decided to answer the door.
Shock plastered on my face at who was standing in front of me.
“Matt?” I questioned raising my eyebrow
“Uhh can we speak?” He said holding something behind his back awkwardly
“I guess” I said moving out the way to let him in
He walked in, and I shut the door really confused as to why he was here.
“I’m sorry, can I help you with something?” I said shaking my head
“I got you this” he blurts out and turned around to hand me a gift basket
There were flowers, candles, candies, and books. I grabbed it and looked at him still confused
“Matt what is this?” I said blinking at him
“Well I got you roses because they’re your favorite, and then I got you candles and here’s the thing I couldn’t pick just one because I know you love the vanilla candle, but you also love Mahogany Teakwood, but then you also love the peppermint one; so I got you all of them. And then I know you said you loved Twilight but never read the books. So I went to get you the first one, but then I realized you’d have to read all of them, so I got the complete series. And when I was buying candy I remembered all the candies you listed to me like a year ago that you liked, so I had to get them all and-“ he was rambling until I cut him off
“No Matt I mean why are you giving me this?” I said placing the basket down on the table next to us
“Oh….I wanted to say I’m sorry” he said looking down
“Sorry?” I said cocking my head to the side
“I’ve been such an asshole to you lately, and it was wrong. Most of the time I’m joking, but I realized you’re sensitive, WAIT NO not like that I just mean I joke the wrong way with you. And that’s my fault, so I’m sorry. But also I’m a really dry person and I like to people watch. And I also realized that that comes off mean and weird. It’s not what I meant” he said talking fastly
“Matt, calm down. It’s okay” I said getting flustered
“And I should’ve realized what you were going through sooner. I hadn’t realized how bad you had gotten” he said shaking his head
“What do you mean?” I asked
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” he stated
“I’m sorry?” I said furrowing my eyebrows
“Well you see I remember you told me you only watch that movie when you’re super depressed, and you posted it on your story a few days ago. It made me open my eyes” he stated
“Matt how do you remember all this” I said letting out a nervous giggle
“Can’t you see? I’m madly in love with you” he said blinking
“You’re what?” I said my jaw dropping and heat rising to my cheeks
“I just wasn’t sure how to go about it because I don’t know how to open up about my feelings and I realize I was actually pushing you further away from me because I just don’t know how to act around you and once again I’m sorry” he said stepping a bit closer
“Matt, it's okay. You were an asshole to me, but I also wasn’t the nicest in trying to understand you” I said
“I mean no it’s not okay. I’m not sure why I couldn’t just open up to you and tell you how I really feel without completely destroying it.” He replied
“I’m just shocked you remembered so much about me” I said looking over at the gift basket
“How could I not? You’re the most interesting person in my life” he replied blinking softly at me
“You’re really throwing me for a loop here” I said laughing
“I know, and it’s because I’m an idiot who can’t get my shit together” he said signing
“It’s okay Matt. I appreciate all of this. I’m truly grateful” I said pulling him in for a hug
“I just really like you and I’m sorry that I just couldn’t figure out how to reciprocate that properly” he said letting go of me
“ I mean yes you did go about it horribly but I’m glad you let me know I mean hey it’s better late than never” I said offering him a smile
“Do you….do you like me too?” He asked
“You could say something like that” I said blushing and looking down
Matt gave me a smile and pulled me in. Our lips crashing together in a sweet yet passionate kiss. My heart flutters at the action.
That night Matt and I bonded over everything you could think of. Laying in his arms as we laughed about anything and everything.
It’s so weird what communication can do. It can really make or break you.
And it made us.
The End
Yalllll I’m hating everything I write. I tried to make this one decent. I'm sorry yall LMAOAOA. But anyways I hope you enjoyed it and I love yall dearly🥹🖤🖤

Something I hate when u try defend Debbie, Mandy, Karen, fiona and even Monica is how someone will always come back with the "Frank was abused and you hate him🤡" like yes I do!! Cause its different.
Debbie, mandy and Karen are all teenage girls who show that they have grown from their actions and are better after! Frank is a old man who has had his whole life to work through his trauma and get better. Frank didn't do something wrong and change for the better (in the space or a couple years) like the girls. He forced Monica to keep fiona and did it YEARS later with Carl too. Frank didn't just 1 or 2 horrible things, he did hundreds.
And can we talk about how Frank is a massive factor to why Debbie, fiona, Monica are the way they are?? Frank didn't break the cycle and he abused his kids and his partner. The other 3 actively try not to do that! Debbie is a fantastic mum she's not perfect, but she would never tell her kid to sleep with an adult or insult and belittle her. LIKE FRANK. Fiona spends her life till she is 28 doing everything for her siblings, sure she makes some mistakes, but she would never hurt them on purpose. LIKE FRANK. Monica is a terrible mother, but she tries to get help. She wants to get better, and who is it that almost always pulls her down?? FRANK.
A lot of what Frank does can be explained by his abuse and I really sympathise with him when we meet his mum. I hate that women. But a tragic childhood is not enough for me to forgive a man who has done the following things
-got his very young son kidnapped over a bar bet.
-used a dying woman for money and slept with her knowing she would likely die
-gave his son a bloody nose over a t shirt
-neglected all his children from fionas birth to his own death
-sexually assaulted his wife
-got a convicted pedophile into Congress
-told his underage daughter to sleep with grown adults so that he could sneak into that adults house to sleep
-broke his mental ill wife out of hospital, with the help or his young children
-tricked his son into thinking he had cancer
-tricked his son into being the bio father of 6(?) Kids
-used another mental ill woman for his own enjoyment
-told his own daughter to be "skins" in a game (meaning to take her shirt off 😃)
-forced his 9yr old daughter to become the main carer of all her siblings
-left his 3 very young children on the side of the road while one of them was extremely ill
-lied about being gay to hundreds of people for personal gain
-used ANOTHER mentally ill woman
-became the sponsor to an addict just so he could live with him and later outed him as gay even tho the man wasn't gay ??
-brought monica back into his children's life because he wanted money(he tricked her to coming back)
-has used prostitution services
-steals form pretty much everyone
-repeatedly ignored his youngest daughters attemps at closeness
-hes racist
-seduced his daughter in attempts of getting her liver
-ruined his daughters wedding
-given drugs to a baby with down syndrome
-called CPS on his own kids, particularly forcing his young adult daughter to now legally becoming guardian of her 5 siblings
-creating credit cards under his kids names
-used homeless people to create a second family
-handcuffed his wife to a bed so she couldn't get an abortion
-spiked his kids with drugs
-pretending his kids was homeless and begging with him
-showed clear sexual interest in Karen (a teenage girl)
-tried to strangle his daughter
-He advised Carl to use Chuckie to smuggle drugs, and then gave both of them away for police
-He refused to go Carl's parent night at school, but instead went to Karens
-encouraged his son to be a drug dealer
And that's just what I can remember of the top of my head. So yes FUCK FRANK and love my shameless girls
