Although NASA has not released the names of the female candidates accepted to the program, we’ve learned that one of the ladies is none other than the wife of astronaut Gordon “Gordo” Stevens. Mrs. Stevens was a pilot herself when she met her future husband, a story chronicled in Look magazine under the heading “Love in the Skies.”

I just finished watching season 2 of For All Mankind for the first time, and I am in much need of a fix-it fic, so here it is.

Gordo & Tracy fix the nuclear reactor's coolant system and return to the Jamestown airlock. Everything after this is my alternate universe/timeline wherein they both survive and have a chance to face the world (& beyond) together again.

“So out with it then – who is it?” Molly says before taking a deep inhale of her cigarette. She offers it to Margo, who, as usual, shakes her head against Molly’s bare shoulder. Molly can’t quite remember when Margo stopped smoking – probably about the same time she was named Director of JSC. Something in Margo became just a bit more rigid when she made the jump from flight director to head honcho.  Molly loves making her more pliant. 

New Frontiers - For All Mankind Karen Baldwin, Wayne Cobb

Karen shakes a little as she takes the keys out of her gray leather purse, selects the right one, and, for the first time ever, slides it into the deadbolt.

She tries to turn it, but the lock won’t budge. 

Time and Space - For All Mankind Margo Madison/Sergei Nikulov

She doesn't even want to look at her watch. Dawn must be on the horizon soon. They had gotten back to NASA at what? 1:00 am? 1:30 am? And as much as she'd initially chided Aleida for being in the design room, she has to admit, her help has been immeasurable. Catching their flaw, the need for a shock-absorbent ring —she's better than Margo gave her credit for.

Margo takes a deep breath, straightening her blouse and adjusting her glasses, before opening the door to the briefing room. She can do this. She’s the director of JSC. The first woman to grace the floor of mission control. She’s led countless lunar missions. And she even speaks to the president semi-frequently about agency directives for the Jamestown base. 

She can certainly handle the likes of Molly Cobb for a single briefing. 

The Mechanics of it all - For All Mankind Margo Madison/Sergei Nikulov (mechanic AU!)

Margo huffs as she marches into the garage. She can’t believe today of all days that her car broke down. She has dinner with Bradford, Tom, and Ed tonight, and she still somehow has to make her gig later at Club 11:59. 

Emma had given her the address of her mechanic. She had sworn by him. And though somehow Margo’s car managed to sputter into the parking lot of the garage, the sounds it was making were not promising. 

Constant as a Northern Star - For All Mankind Margo Madison/Sergei Nikulov

Dinner had been all too short. His time always was with her. Though they had known each other for years now, it seemed all they ever had were these small fragments together: torn-up coasters, a coin toss gone awry, elevator repartee. He would always long for more. 

Deep down, he knows he will never get it. 

But as they come in from the cool London air, back into the lobby, he dares to be greedy for more of her — just for tonight.

She turns and holds the elevator door open with one hand, wine glass still gesticulating in the other.

“Would you…” she hesitates, “care to continue this lively discussion?"

He steps towards the doors and places his hand just above hers on its frame… tries to not get ahead of himself. “Discussion?” he teases. “I thought this was the blueprint for future peace negotiations between our two countries.”

For the record, she was wearing red because it was a Christmas party. There was no other reason - no matter how severe the side-eyed look Emma gave her was when she exited her office in the mid-length, v-neck, ruffled dress. It was Christmas, and red was a Christmas colour. That was all.

He hangs back in the hallway. He should not be here, he knows, listening to this exchange between the director of JSC and the NASA administrator. But then, it is them who have chosen to have a conversation like this out in the open. So typically naive, he thinks. So American.
