@mashumaru I hope you don't mind me answering your question here? There was no way this was fitting in the comments section. 😅 So these are what I'd call more Sunday afternoon murder mysteries then gritty crime dramas, as that's what I'm mainly watching at the mo. But if you'd like some darker recs, just let me know.
Anywho...
Midsomer Murders
The ultimate Sunday afternoon watch. Murder most foul, represented artistically in the form of a cream tea. Starring Inspector Barnaby(s), the most teddy bear men ever to exist. Every episode will include chocolate box village eye porn. Murder weapons have included but are not limited to: a cheese wheel, drowned in chocolate, a headless horseman and a steampunk werewolf. It sounds ridiculous but once you start, you won't be able to stop. I promsie you. The horrors: 0/10, though may leave you with a life long phobia of morris dancers and village fetes.
The Morseverse (Endeavour/Inspector Morse and Lewis)
Ah Morseverse, my beloved. The English academic elite does crime. Oxford is it's own splendorous character, with every episode crammed full of towering libraries, awe inspiring architecture and fanatically manicured, college quads. A must watch for those whose hearts belong to dark academia. Endeavour and Morse are set in the 60s/70s and 80s/90s respectively. And follow the same character, Endeavour Morse, from brilliant, blue eyed, troubled twink to brilliant, blue eyed, grumpy old man with a definite alcohol problem. (Never play drink along with Morse, it's a surefire way to get alcohol poisoning.) The baton is then passed to his sergeant, Robert Lewis in Lewis, set in the relative present (as of this post). The relationship between Inspector and Sergeant is what ultimately makes these series, be it Fred Thursday and Morse, Morse and Lewis and Lewis and James Hathaway. And you'll come to treasure them. Be prepared to leave these series with a well earned fictional degree in classical music. Murders CAN and WILL be based on obscure, literary references. The horrors: Well it depends.... I'd say Endeavour is the darkest, Lewis is the lightest with Morse settled nicely in between. If you finish this series not wanting a Jaguar Mark II, you did it wrong.
Vera
Vera Stanhope, my northumbrian queen, my geordie goddess. A middle aged plus woman, with no makeup (or two f*cks to rubs together) decked in a brown hat and mac and driving the world most beaten up land rover.... Owns everyone. And it is sooo satisfying to watch. The scenic southern eye candy of the two previous recs is replaced with the wild, isolated landscapes of the North, very much reflecting our DI. She's joined by sergeant dark and dishy and the ever more put up Kenny Lockhart, as well as host of others. But what really makes this series is Vera herself. As equally formidable as she is kind hearted, with no hint of glamour. She's the kind of female representation we both need and deserve. The horrors: Vera passive aggressively calling vicious murderers 'pet' fixes all world problems. It's scientifically proven.
Things you may have heard of:
Sherlock Holmes, the Granada edition starring Jeremy Brett. No finer Sherlock has ever graced our screens to this day (And yes, I will stand and fight for that statement.) One of the most loyal adaptations of the books ever made.
Poirot, staring David Suchet. No offence to Kenneth Branagh (Your Henry V got me through high-school English lit sir). But David Suchet is THE Prirot for me. Another loyal book adaptation. Over a 25 year period Suchet lived and breathed Poirot and it shows.
If anyone's got any other recommendations please feel free to add them on. I know I've missed a ton! Anywho, I hope that helps me dear. 😁

Last movie: inside out 2, which i just got around to watching for the first time today.
Last TV show: technically it was the granada sherlock holmes series, because one of the episodes takes place on christmas eve/christmas so i watched it with my family on christmas and i haven't been able to make time to sit down and watch any shows since then lol
Sweet/Spicy/Savory: sweet
Relationship status: single
Last thing I googled: "dreamlight valley coconut ice cream"--was looking up the recipe to give it to donald duck as a gift in the game lol.
Current obsession: honestly my brain is constantly bouncing between several different obsessions at once most of the time. lately i've mostly been obsessed with twisted wonderland as usual, but i've also been obsessed with wicked again since i saw the movie. there's also baldur's gate 3 since i started making more progress in my current playthrough, and a3 since i've been reading more of the events and started making gifs of the anime!
Looking forward to: taking a trip to new orleans for the first time next week! i'm going there to meet up with my best friend for a few days and on one of those days we're gonna go to fanexpo new orleans.
No pressure tagging: @nerdalmighty @rosenfey @ihrtmichael @deweyduck @augustmishas @whencartoonsruletheworld and anyone else who wants to do this, just say i tagged you! i always forget which of my mutuals like to be tagged in these kinds of things so i don't tag many people because i don't wanna bug anyone haha.

Seriously, if your only point of contact with Sherlock Holmes is Sherlock (2010), please do yourself a favor and branch out a little bit. Because that one series was very cool visually and all (Benadryl Cucumber is very pretty), but it doesn't do the source material justice. If you don't want to read the books (I guarantee you can find them in your local library - the author is Arthur Conan Doyle), the Granada adaptation (Sherlock Holmes (1984) - the one seen in the gifs above) is both period accurate and very well acted. If the trappings of Victorian England make you feel lost, a great modern adaptation is Elementary (2012) (it has a Holmes who recognizes that drugs are bad for him, and a female Watson played by Lucy Liu, who starts out as his "sober companion", but becomes quite the investigator herself). And if you want an adaptation that only tangentially touches on the source material, where the brilliant mystery solver is addicted to pain killers, and his best friend is very charming, but also has a string of failed relationships because he's obsessed with work and keeping the genius mystery solver in line? Dr House (holmes->homes->house) lives in appt 221B, his best friend is Dr Wilson (watson->wilson), and he will figure out what the hell is wrong with the patient of the week, even if he has to have an intern break into their home to figure out what detergent they're using. House MD (2004) is completely insane from start to finish, and yet... and yet so fucking compelling to watch. It kind of jumps the shark by the time House has to go into rehab and his room mate is Lin-Manuel Miranda, and they collaborate on a rap number for the rehab talent show, but the show ends with House faking his own death to take care of Wilson, so there's that.

UPDATED: Top 20 Portrayals of Professor Moriarty
All throughout May, I discussed my Top 31 Favorite Versions of Sherlock Holmes. Yesterday, on the first of June, I provided a quick list of my Top 20 Versions of Dr. Watson. Today, I'm going to be doing another quick Top 20, focusing on the Master Detective's arch-nemesis: Professor Moriarty. Like Watson, Moriarty is a character who has evolved greatly over the years. In the books, he's only present in two stories, and only mentioned in a handful of others. There was no great, endless battle being waged between these two titans of ego and intellect in Conan Doyle's stories: Moriarty was really a character invented for the sole purpose of killing off Sherlock Holmes. Doyle wanted to move on from the detective, and Moriarty was a character created to be the assassin. However, the concepts and the character Doyle made were so strong and so striking, that Moriarty took on a life of his own. When people began making stage shows of Holmes, Moriarty was the go-to villain above all the rest. It was really because of these stage productions that Moriarty ended up becoming the cultural icon he is today. Not EVERY Sherlock Holmes movie or adaptation features the Napoleon of Crime, but there are still PLENTY to choose from, all bringing their own unique twists to the portrayal and the relationship between the criminal mastermind and the consulting detective. Like with the previous aforementioned lists, I will only be counting movies, TV productions, video games, and radio shows for this list. Novels, stage productions, and comics will not be included. (On that note, I do want to throw a bone to the one found in the comics version of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I know that one appears in the movie, too, but...ehhh, let's not talk about that one.) Also, like yesterday, this list will be "description-less": just pictures, credits, and rankings. With this in mind, here are my Top 20 Portrayals of Professor Moriarty!
Tumblr media
20. Natalie Dormer (as Jamie Moriarty), from Elementary. (This one ranks low because she’s actually a mixture of two characters: Moriarty and Irene Adler. It’s hard for me to tell which one overrules the other: is she more Irene, or is she more the Professor? This is the ONLY reason she does not rank higher.)
Tumblr media
19. Richard Newman, from Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century.
Tumblr media
18. Alan Cox, from Big Finish Productions.
Tumblr media
17. Gustav Von Seyffertitz, from Sherlock Holmes (1922).
Tumblr media
16. Orson Welles, from BBC’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Radio Show.
Tumblr media
15. The Version(s) from Fate/Grand Order. (Older Moriarty, a.k.a. Archer, is voiced by Kirk Thornton in English and Takaya Hashi in Japanese. Young Moriarty, a.k.a. Ruler, is voiced by Ito Kendo - no English voice actor yet.)
Tumblr media
14. Henry Daniell, from The Woman in Green.
Tumblr media
13. Lionel Atwill, from Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon.
Tumblr media
12. Vincent D’Onofrio, from Sherlock: Case of Evil.
Tumblr media
11. Paul Freeman, from Without a Clue.
Tumblr media
10. Anthony Andrews, from Hands of a Murderer. (If you’re wondering why his Holmes and Watson don’t appear on previous lists, that’s because Moriarty is the only thing that makes this version worth watching.)
Tumblr media
9. Anthony Higgins, as Professor Rathe, from Young Sherlock Holmes.
Tumblr media
8. Viktor Yevgrafov, from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson.
Tumblr media
7. Eric Porter, from the Granada Series.
Tumblr media
6. Daniel Davis, from Star Trek: The Next Generation. (I really should have given Data an Honorable Mention during Ele-May-ntary...oh, well.)
Tumblr media
5. George Zucco, from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939).
Tumblr media
4. Vincent Price, as Professor Ratigan, from The Great Mouse Detective. (It physically HURTS leaving him out of the Top 3.)
Tumblr media
3. Andrew Scott (as Jim Moriarty), from Sherlock.
Tumblr media
2. Jared Harris, from the Guy Ritchie Films.
Tumblr media
1. Soma Saito/Aaron Dismuke, from Moriarty the Patriot. (Yep. After much deliberation, “Liam” is my favorite Moriarty after all. For SO many reasons. XD )
Hope you all have enjoyed!

On Granada’s “The Red Circle”:
Watched a NEW Granada Holmes episode and remarkably it didn't kill me!! I've been avoiding it for months now because they keep being so incredibly interesting and fascinating and sad that it derails me for a week or more, but this one they played pretty straight. Brett was certainly doing less, but they padded the story out with extended backstory and a new character. Artistic microscope usage was fairly succinct and clear in this episode. This episode was comparatively light on artistic elements, just some repeated “visual rhymes” that took little interpretation. Certainly this kept the episode closer to the book, but I do enjoy when they go all in with the bonkers artsy stuff.
There was a really interesting snatch of a scene where they're in an empty theater, looking for a guy who they find out has just been murdered. Holmes says "Watson," and gestures, and immediately exit Watson stage right. Then the camera pans around to show the dark stage with the gas lights as viewed from the empty seats, and Holmes standing there onstage, alone, in his dark long coat and hat. He stays for an instant, then turn and exit Holmes stage right. I'm still thinking about it, but there's something to it.
Something about... maybe he's reflecting on the performance he's created of himself. Of solving crimes, of being Sherlock Holmes... because in his first scene, the client is in with him trying to explain herself and he's not very interested in solving the case. But he's not actually rude to her about it, or even dismissive, he's just like "well there's plenty of reasonable explanations. Don't worry, you'll be fine." It's such a change from how he's acted in the past when he's trying to get a client to leave. He's such a softer person in that moment. Brett’s Holmes does have a capacity for great gentleness, which he seems to almost always use with women clients (except when he forgets), but here he's not being his gentleman self, or his irreverent self, or any of the selves we've seen him use with clients. He's just not interested in being Sherlock Holmes in that moment. He wants to sit in his chair at his desk and put together his scrapbooks.
Eventually he's convinced to take an interest when she shares that a former lodger of hers was a client of his, and how he said Holmes "brought light out from the darkness" and he obliges and does Sherlock Holmes for her. And although he does the Sherlock Holmes routine and his heart is in it, that scene on the stage might be showing that he's ready to be finished. He's ready to stop. That peaceful place at his desk with his scrapbooks is going to be enough for him. Even though Watson and Mrs. Hudson absolutely do not believe that, they're worried about him getting stir-crazy as he does, or even relapsing. (Watson even says to Mrs. Hudson, “Don’t worry, I’ll get him to do it” or something.) But Holmes doesn't think he's going to go into one of his “slumps”, and I'm inclined to agree. For this case, his presence doesn't even do that much. He just kind of obligingly goes around and learns things. That is how it goes in the book, too: he just snoops around and things come together pretty much how they would have if he hadn't.
And I think, although his heart is most definitely with the case and with being Sherlock Holmes, he is not so urgent as he has been in the past. In the past, everything is an absolute emergency. But here, when Watson's actions inadvertently lead to a man's death, he's very stoic about it. He even tells Watson not to blame himself, that the murderer is to blame. Contrast that with the scene in The Solitary Cyclist, where he berates Watson for having spoken to the wrong person when investigating a stalking case. He has let go of the fevered intensity that told him he had to protect everyone, and if he couldn’t protect, avenge. That his work was the only thing standing between the people and chaos, and that his work was the only thing standing between him and chaos. This story, he seemed more inclined to reflect on his own archive: to think about his past work, and redefine the relationship between it, and him, and the people.

Update:
So first of all, turns out it took her this long (3 days!) to finish the second half of the memoirs because she saw the blurb on the back, which is Watson saying "It is with a heavy heart that I take up my pen to write these the last words [...]" sooo yeah she thought it was the last book and. I guess she didn't wanna hurry up and finish it. Especially because it implies that Sherlock dies.
Damn you romanian back blurb!!
Anyway
She finished it this morning while i was asleep.
For context she knows I'm still on Valley of Fear/ that I didn't read the memoirs yet.
Also for context, i had told my mom the whole "I can't wait for her to finish this so i can see how she reacts" thing
Anyway i asked her about the book, here's how it went:
---
Me: Did you finish the book?
G: Yep.
Me: And?
G: I liked it, what can i say. Couldn't tell you what.. exactly.. happened. But i liked it.
Me: But, you know... I know what happens in the end.
G: ....you got any more of these [books]?
Me: C'mon, don't you wanna talk about what happened?
G: No.
Me: Why not?
G: I don't remember what happened.
Me: ...
Me: (to my mom) ...look at that.
[enter mom]
M: What, mom, what happened?
G: She asked me if i finished it, i said yes-
M: You finished it??
G: Yes.
M: When?
G: Today.
M: And?
G: And... I don't remember how it ended.
M: Meaning...? Nobody died, or...
G: Somebody died.
M: Yeah?
G: Yea but Watson didn't.
M: Who died?
G: ...
Me: Come on grandma, i know.
G: There was this guy, a do- not a doctor. Some smartass. And he wanted to kill Watson.
M: Watson or Sherlock?
G: .......I think.. both? I dunno.
[...]
Me: I know what happens in this story, that's why i was asking, i wanted to know what you thought.
G: I thought it ended well. I liked that. It was-
Me: Bit rude.
G: -an acceptable ending. (To me) Why?
M: So Sherlock was ok in the end?
G: Yes, of course.
M: Well how come? Where did he go?
G: (annoyed) I dunno, to the madhouse!
*Me and mom laughing*
G: How should i know where he went? I finished the book and that's it! (To me) Do you have any more? After this?
Me: Fineee! Yeah, i do, because... Ok so, [starts explaining the public reaction to the final problem] because they didn't like that Sherlock died-
G: But... Sherlock didn't die.
Me: I mean he was presumed dead, they never found the body, but-
M: Well the book says that Sherlock died.
Me: (to mom) ...it says he fell into the waterfall.
M: (to grandma) You weren't worried??
Me: (finally gets it) Ah, it's Sherlock Holmes...
G: He knows how to swim.
[...]
M: I was just asking cause... You know, I haven't read it-
G: Well read it then!
Me: (joking) Yeah mom, read it. Get cultured. Seriously...
G: (serious)Yeah!!
[...]
Me: [Resumes explaining the whole irl situation with ACD and the fans and stuff] aand yes there are more books with him, I'll bring you the next...
G: (satisfied) I'll go make my bed.
Me: [hands her the book]
G: Ah. The return of Sherlock Holmes.
Me: Yes.
G: Good thing he returns...
Bonus, a couple minutes later:
M: So you didn't think he was dead??
G: I had my doubts.
M: Yeah? So you had some hope that he was still alive?
G: Yep.
----
Yeah and that's about it. I really didn't get my yapper genes from her. So. Yeah.
Oh and bonus bonus:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I was actually thinking of watching the Granada adaptation myself, so i asked her like 2-3 days ago if she wanted to watch it with me, after she's done with the books. And she agreed, sooo i think maybe we'll start watching that after i get back from a trip i have coming up. I actually haven't really watched anything with her, aside from stuff that was like, randomly on tv. So yeah. First time for everything.
So apparently my grandma somehow never knew anything about Sherlock Holmes until like 9 days ago, when she saw me with "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and asked if she could read it after i was finished. Naturally i offered her the first volume and. Um. Yeah, so, in the span of nine days she read all 4 novels and 18 of the short stories. That's 1,237 pages. I didn't even know she liked reading that much. I'm actually amazed. I mean she's devouring them. And. I dunno, i just never expected to have, for lack of a better word, a fandom in common with my grandma. It's.. Really nice. You know?
And yeah i do think it's fair to say I've turned her into a SH fangirl. Today i told her about some trouble I'm having and that i dunno what to do and she went "Hey, hey. We'll fix it, ok? I'm on it, I'm Sherlock Holmes! *wink*"
Anyway what i wanted to say is that she's halfway through "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" and i. Well you might know that it ends with this little story called "The Final Problem". And omg she doesn't knowwww. I feel like history is happening, I don't know of anyone who started that story not knowing how it ends. (I didn't get that far, but I've known about it for like 8+ years)
Anyway. I'm kinda nervous for her. But really curious about her reaction.
(Also excited cause then i get to tell her he's not actually dead)
If she keeps this pace, she'll finish "The Final Problem" this evening.

New tag game: Post pictures of your first ever (fictional/celeb) crush to the latest one and tag five others to continue the game
Thanks to @minmoyu for tagging me and ooof, are you sure you’re ready for this?!! :D I have been around/in fandom for a loooooong time and at first I thought, okay, no way I can list all my crushes, there have been SO many and we’ll be here all day but then as I started compiling a list I found I was having fun reminiscing and decided, what the heck, yeah, let’s do em all... or at least all I can remember! :D
There have absolutely for sure been other more minor crushes and passing fancies along the way, but these are the big ones that I remember (and that, in more recent years, I can track by going through my posted fanfics on AO3 and even *shudder* FFNET and seeing which shows I was into enough to want to write fic about the characters).
[Quick note: with rare exceptions, for actors I am listing them by the character they played rather than just the actor. Whilst there are actors that I like in multiple roles (and conversely, characters who on paper I would normally be into but are played by actors who do nothing for me, and hence the character generally does nothing for me either), for the most part it is the character I really have the crush on.]
I’m going to put this under a readmore cos it has gotten ridiculously long:
So... without further ado:
1. MORTEN HARKET from a-ha - OKay so, dating myself badly here but... I had the *biggest* crush on Morten Harket when I was a teenager. Pretty much the entirety of my side of the bedroom I shared with my sister was covered in posters of a-ha, and Morten in particular. I even had a heart-shaped Morten Harket pillow! :D I loved a-ha’s music (still do!) and I wanted to go see them in concert when I was 14 but my parents wouldn’t let me (*sob*). I did finally get to see them in concert in the early 2000s and they were BRILLIANT live (and Morten was still very very pretty)!
Tumblr media
2. RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON as MACGYVER - MacGyver is the first tv character I remember being really into and having a crush on, to the extent that I would record episodes of the show off the tv (onto VHS tape - yes, I am *that* old!) so that I could rewatch them (especially the ones where he got hurt - yeah, I was a whumper even then! :D)
Tumblr media
3. KEIFER SUTHERLAND - One of my rare exceptions. I think I first saw him in Lost Boys (and loved him in that film) but it was his role as Doc Scurlock in Young Guns that really made me fall for both the character and him. I definitely remember seeking out any and all films he was in and buying any magazine he was interviewed in (and knowing far more facts about him than was probably healthy! :D) and even drawing a fanart portrait of him. :)
Tumblr media
4. KYLE MACLACHLAN as SPECIAL AGENT DALE COOPER - I remember hearing about Twin Peaks before it started airing in the UK and it sounded so different and interesting... I watched it from the very first episode and very quickly developed a crush on Coop.
Tumblr media
5. BRENT SPINER as DATA - I think ST: TNG had been airing for a while before I stumbled across it but I quickly became hooked and Data was my favourite character right from the start. I definitely remember at one point buying an (unofficial) episode guide book so that I could look up which episodes were good Data-focused ones (especially ones where he got hurt! :D) so I could go out and buy the videos that had those episodes on (at the time the show was available to buy on VHS-tape with 2 episodes on each tape).
Tumblr media
6. DAVID DUCHOVNY as FOX MULDER - Another show that I heard the buzz about and started watching right from the start and, like so many others, I immediately developed a crush on the snarky, enigmatic, troubled FBI agent with the weird name. The X-Files was the first show I ever tried writing (one, never-finished) fanfic for.
Tumblr media
7. PAUL GROSS as BENTON FRASER - Man, Due South was such a good show! It was so quirky and clever and funny and Benton Fraser, with his huge heart and his serious demeanour and his gorgeous blue eyes, was just so darn attractive! He also got whumped a fair bit too! :D Due South was also the show that introduced me to the music of Sarah McLachlan (I was enough of a fan that I bought the show soundtrack on CD).
Tumblr media
8. HUGH LAURIE as DR GREGORY HOUSE - This was a bit of an odd one for me because I had grown up knowing Hugh Laurie solely as a comedian/comic actor, known mostly for playing buffoons and genial idiots. And suddenly here he was with stubble, an American accent, and a limp, and he was hawt AF! :D It caused quite the feedback loop in my brain for a while which pretty much went “Wow, House is hot.... but it’s Hugh Laurie... but he’s hot... but it’s HUGH LAURIE!!1!”
I *loved* House (the first few seasons, at least) and oof a character with persistent pain (and a self-destructive streak a mile wide!) was a whumper’s dream. House was the first show for which I wrote - and published online - completed fanfics.
Tumblr media
8. JOE FLANIGAN as JOHN SHEPPARD - Stargate Atlantis was my first proper online fandom, the first show I prolifically and repeatedly wrote fanfic for, and the first time I ever met in person an actor I was a big fan of (and while the show was still airing, to boot!). It was also my first introduction to the online community of whumpers! A bunch of us from the Shep Whump thread on Gateworld heard that Joe was going to be at a convention in London and we decided to book hotel rooms and meet up and go to the convention together and it was AWESOME! I can still remember seeing Joe *in person* for the first time and just,,,, struggling to believe he was actually here, in person, in front of me! He was super super lovely and humble too and took time to chat to everyone at the signing table and I clearly remember my brain just pretty much fritzing out during the photo session and being intensely aware of the sensation of Joe’s hand on my shoulder....
It was also super lovely to meet fellow fans, and online friends, in person for the first time and we had so much fun, and it kickstarted me going to lots of other conventions, including specific Stargate/SGA ones where I got to know lots of other lovely fans and online friends. I’ve met Joe about 4 or 5 times in total now and he’s been lovely every time.
Tumblr media
9. PAUL BLACKTHORNE as HARRY DRESDEN - Gosh I loved the shortlived tv adaptation of The Dresden Files. I loved the fantasy aspect, the stories, the humour, and I especially loved Harry Dresden and how often he got whumped! :D
Tumblr media
10. DAVID TENNANT as THE 10TH DOCTOR - I had watched the Christopher Ecclestone revival of Doctor Who and enjoyed it well enough but I can clearly remember watching David Tennant’s first episode as The Doctor - on Christmas Day, at my brother-in-law’s house - and being aware, as I watched it that... ooookay, yes, I’m in trouble here... I like him... I like him a lot... :D I mean, I’m sure the fact that he got whumped so thoroughly in his very first episode had nothing to do with how quickly I fell for him... right? :)
Tumblr media
11. ALEX O’LAUGHLIN as MICK ST JOHN - Another show that ended far too soon and just as it was getting *seriously* good. But also a prime example of my point about having a crush on the character not the actor. I looooooved Alex as Mick St John... and yet in Hawaii 5.0 he pretty much does nothing for me (the character is too stoic and the whump often too unrealistically glossed over). Anyway, in Moonlight he was my favourite kind of character - angsty, brooding, dangerous AF when he needed to be... and essentially immortal so you could whump the heck out of him and he’d recover so you could whump him again! :D
Tumblr media
12. SIMON BAKER as PATRICK JANE - There is so much to love about Patrick Jane... his smarts, his sass, his angst... and Simon is a rare “against type” blonde crush for me (you may have noticed by now that most of my crushes follow a similar physical aesthetic - tall, slim/wiry, and dark-haired) and again here I think my crush is almost all to do with the character rather than the actor.
Tumblr media
12. BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH as SHERLOCK HOLMES - I’m almost ashamed to admit it, given the clusterfuck that both the show and its fandom became, but in the earlier seasons I had quite the crush on Benedict’s Sherlock (and okay, a little bit on Benedict himself - I did definitely enjoy some of his other roles too). It helps that I was already a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes character (I’ve read all the stories and novels multiple times and was a big fan of the Granada adaptation starring Jeremy Brett - whose Holmes would definitely count as one of my more minor/passing crushes) already. Benedict is another crush that I have met in person, at a (actually, the first!) Sherlock convention and he was lovely in person - very genuine, very articulate and thoughtful.
Tumblr media
13. TOM MISON as ICHABOD CRANE - I was excited for Sleepy Hollow as soon as I heard about it and I was SUCH a fan for the first couple of seasons (before TPTB completely destroyed it and it inevitably got cancelled (I didn’t even watch the last season and a half)) and Tom’s Ichabod (and his amazing chemistry with Nicole’s Abbie) was a large part of why. I also quickly became a big fan of Tom himself as he came across as so witty and self-deprecating and *fun* in all the behind the scenes/convention clips etc. I was lucky enough to also meet Tom at a convention and he genuinely is that witty and charming and lovely.
Tumblr media
14. TOM WISDOM as ARCHANGEL MICHAEL - I think Dominion was possibly the first show that I got sucked into by seeing whumpy gifsets on tumblr! :D It was such a great show and also to date the most immersive, welcoming, cast-and-crew-interactive fandom I have ever been in. The cast and crew regularly live-tweeted the episodes, and interacted with fans on Twitter, and it was SO much fun. And Tom’s Michael was my favourite character right from the start - seemingly aloof but so much going on under the surface... and some really nice whump, especially in season 2! I was heartbroken when it was cancelled after only 2 seasons (and just as the plot was getting *really* interesting).
Tumblr media
15. OLIVER JACKSON-COHEN as LUCAS - I was hooked on Emerald City right from the first episode. It was visually stunning, so atmospheric, and really intruiging. I love love loved Adria Arjona’s Dorothy (ngl, I had a bit of a crush on her too) and she and Lucas together were just... *chef’s kiss*. I mean... what an introduction to a character... she finds him crucified, bleeding, his wrists tied with barbed wire, and amnesiac.... and the whump only gets better and better from there on in! Like the entire first two episodes are just... Lucas whump! :D And his devotion to her... Emerald City was honestly the first show where I really got into a ship. I was *invested* in Dorcas, dammit! Aaaand sadly another excellent show that never made it past its first season.
Tumblr media
16. JASON RALPH as QUENTIN COLDWATER - Another show that I watched right from the start, was heavily invested in.... and that the writers absolutely tanked and destroyed in later seasons. *cries* Quentin was such a brilliant viewpoint character for the show and I loved his awkwardness, and his angst, and his enthusiasm, and his adorable floppy hair... and how often he got whumped!
Tumblr media
17. COLIN MORGAN - I fell for Colin in Merlin (which I stumbled upon late, long after it had finished airing, and hence was able to binge-watch the entire 5 seasons!) and liked him enough to seek out his other works, such as The Fall, and Humans, and The Living and the Dead, and he was brilliant (and very pretty) in all of them... and his characters also seem to get whumped quite a lot! :D
Tumblr media
18. MATT LANTER as WYATT LOGAN - Wyatt was another of my favourite archetypes... absolutely badass and competent... but also tortured and angsty and capable of intense devotion. Another show that I watched because of whumpy gifs on tumblr and the second ever show where I actually got invested in a ship - Lyatt all the way, baby!! :D - aaaaaand yet another show cancelled before its time.
Tumblr media
19. NOCTIS LUCIS CAELUM from FINAL FANTASY XV - my very first video game crush! I was recommended to play FFXV by fellow whumpers on the whumpshire discord because it was whumpy... and they were not wrong and I loved the game and I absolutely adored Noctis. FFXV is one of very very VERY few video games that I have actually played right through to the end. And possibly the only video game that has ever affected me to such an extent... I became so invested in the characters and their world and I actually found the last couple of chapters really hard to play because it was actually upsetting me emotionally. I had to take a break for a couple of weeks before I could go back and finish it!
Tumblr media
20. CONNOR from DETROIT BECOME HUMAN - and from there I jumped straight into another video game crush! DBH was another game recommended to me for its whump potential and I, and many others, immediately fell in love with the quirky, sassy, self-sacrificing (if you play the game right!) “android sent by Cyberlife”. The game itself is really good too... although, I have tried to play through all the different endings to the story but have never yet managed to make myself play the machine Connor storyline.... I want to complete all the story branches... but I also just want Hank and Connor to be friends and to be happy! :D
Tumblr media
21. ZHU YILONG - Ahhh... the beginning of the asian drama arc of my fandom life! I first came across Zhu Yilong after getting sucked into watching Guardian because of pretty (and whumpy) gifs on tumblr... and I’ve never looked back. He is one of the rare entries where I am pretty much guaranteed to like him in pretty much anything he does and my crush extends beyond Shen Wei, or his other characters, and into reblogging his fashion shoot photos, and keeping up with news of his work in general. He’s just... so darn pretty! And also so... blur! :D And the behind the scenes stuff and interviews of him with Bai Yu, during the Guardian era, just made me fall for him all the more. He’s also ridiculously talented - not only a fantastic actor, but a really good singer (I love his singing voice), he plays guitar and piano, and he can paint too!!
He’s also pretty much what made me start learning Chinese... because after Guardian I went seeking his other dramas to watch... only to find that many of them are only partially, or not at all, subbed. So I thought... why not try learning Chinese and then I’ll be able to watch his other shows? :D
Tumblr media
21. JI CHANG WOOK - My first kdrama crush, and what a good one to start with! Healer was the first drama I ever watched and can you blame me for falling for JCW... especially when I followed up Healer with The K2?! I’ve liked him in pretty much everything I’ve watched him in. Although I do wish he would go back to doing more action-based shows as he is sooo good at them... but he seems to prefer the romcom genre these days, which is something I am nottt always a fan of tbh.
Tumblr media
22. JAKE HSU as MENG SHAO FEI - Yet another show that I got sucked into by tumblr - and also one with a great, fun fandom through which I met lots of lovely people who I still follow/am mutuals with to this day. I just *adored* Jake’s character in History and I also loved the ship - Tang Fan and Meng Shaofei were awesome and adorable together and I was totally invested in both the ship and the gangster/cop/what happened years ago story happening alongside the ship. And Jake is just all kinds of cute.
Tumblr media
23. XIAO ZHAN - Aaaand we are pretty much up to current day now... where The Untamed took over my life in the summer of 2019 and has yet to let me go. Xiao Zhan is another disgustingly talented human being - a fantastic singer and a really good actor, and also an artist - and he also just comes across as a genuinely sweet and charming person, and a very thoughful and earnest one too. And lbr he is ridiculously pretty, and his smile is just pure sunshine.
Tumblr media
24. LEE DONG WOOK as LEE YEON - The most recent entry to the charts.... a Korean actor I was aware of but whose work I hadn’t watched and whose looks didn’t particularly seem to grab me... until I watched Tale of the Nine Tailed and fell head over heels for Lee Yeon (and daaayum does red hair suit LDW!!) and very quickly began to find LDW’s looks very appealing (and oh my, does Lee Yeon whump well!!). And yes, I have now started watching Goblin. :D
Tumblr media
Phew! Aaaand we are done! I’ll admit, I did think of a few more as I was compiling this list but I decided to categorise them as more “minor” crushes and not include them... otherwise we really could be here all day!!
I’m going to tag: @sarah-yyy, @arlothia, @howdydowdy, @thepromiseweheldforlife and @the-wandering-whumper!

May I ask how far you watched Shadowhunters? Who's your favorite character?
And I wanted to tell you how much love seeing so much Granada Holmes on my Dashboard. I started watching it years ago and loved it. Jeremy Brett is my favorite Sherlock Holmes. Seeing it again reminded me of that and that I still haven't finished it. Just thanks for bringing this back to me 🙂
Hi! I watched till half of season 3 I think (not counting 3B) but I have read all the books. My favorite characters are of course Magnus and Alec (from the show, all characters from the books are a bit assholey lol). I also like Raphael a lot :')
Jeremy Brett is also my favorite Holmes! He's just so perfect :') All series are amazing, as hard it is for me ti watched the later episodes, because if Jeremy's health being so clearly deteriorating, they're still amazing episodes and he still does a wonderful job portraying the best Sherlock Holmes <3 so I'm glad you're enjoying the content on your dash. I was doing a rewatch (that I started as soon as I finished watching it for the first time), I need to continue with it... Dhnsjf

[answer the questions and then tag nine people you want to know better/catch up with]
Five songs you’ve been listening to:
Lil Nas X - Montero (including all his hilarious mixes - lo fi Montero anyone?)
Karol G and Nicki Minaj - Tusa
Ida Core, Fedde Le Grand - Let Me Think About It
Camie- renegade
Justin Wellington, Small Jam - Iko Iko
(I am shocked there is no Celtic on this list...)
Last movie: Oh god it has been ages since I’ve watched a movie. I think it was ‘And Then Came You’, which was somehow both utterly terrible and really fun? I put it down to Craig Ferguson’s improv skills.
Currently watching: Too many things. The two top: Call the Midwife (a full 9 season rewatch with the fam) and the Granada Sherlock Holmes series. Relive the childhood!
Currently reading: Nothing for once, since I just finished reading about 10,000 books for a project. I am still chugging away at ‘Head On’ by John Scalzi, which I’ve only left unfinished because of time. One day I will finish it and finally start reading ‘S’... (S is a book legit produced by J.J. Abrams- it’s WILD)
Tagging: @reasonandnonsense <3 , @lady-plantagenet (I’m sorry I’ve been so quiet, deadlines have been killing me), @inkedconstellations, @annebonnyish, @firemedicdiaz & anyone else who’d like to do it! And feel free not to do it at all, friends who I tagged! <3

And that’s a wrap! A whopping 82% of you, if my math is mathing correctly, have read at least a few Sherlock Holmes stories from the original canon and that makes me really happy. I hope for those of you who have read some and want to read them all that this poll gives you that extra little push of encouragement to finish them up. 😁
I got started reading the stories myself after watching some of the Basil Rathbone films and Jeremy Brett Granada TV episodes with my dad when I was younger. Then at some point when I turned 15 or so, I walked to the local bookstore and bought the well worn 2 volume collection you see in this pile of books here.
Tumblr media
These aren’t all my pieces of Sherlock merch, but I have fond memories of buying all of these items: that original 2 volume set I devoured that year, finishing all the stories, that tiny green book of the “essential” stories as the title claims that I picked up at a Waterstones in London on my first trip there when I was one year fresh out of uni, and finally the beautifully gilt volume on the bottom that I treated myself to earlier this year. Plus I added in the little statuette I got from the Sherlock Holmes Museum on that first London visit too. 😄
Thanks to all who voted and shared and love these stories as much as I do. 💕 I hope to see you for the next poll!
I began writing this post before and lost my draft when I went to check how far along “Letters from Watson” is, so here it is without preamble. Lesson learned. 😆 (It appears to be up to The Hound of the Baskervilles at the time of this post.)
If you chose some combination of the short story collections and novels, I’d love to hear which ones in the comments and tags!
Please reblog for a larger sample size. :)

For the last ask game: ✨ 🌧 🍩 ⛅️ :D
Eyyyyy thanks!!! :D
✨- which fictional character (book, show, or movie) do you relate to most?
Hmmm. This is a very good question... I rarely find such characters and usually all I relate to still lack something that would make the experience perfect. For example I relate to Deadpool a lot because of his mental health stuff, medical trauma, talkativeness (actually it was because of him when I decided to stop caring and just started talking) and sense of humour, but then there's also lots of things that we don't have in common. Like the fact that he's a mercenary. I also often relate to outcast characters like Catwoman or Penguin from Batman universe but again, those are villains and often have killed people too...
So as I was thinking about this I think I'm gonna say Sherlock Holmes. He also fits all of those: book, show AND movie. I'm still in the middle of reading the novels but I'm enjoying them a lot; I love the Granada tv series (Jeremy Brett was the best Holmes, imho) and I also really like the movies with Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes.
I think the biggest reason for why I relate to him the most is because he's canonically asexual and aromantic, altho those words have never been used in canon because those words did not exist back in late 1800s yet, but still Doyle wrote him as a "bachelor" who simply just enjoyed other things over relationships. (It's just insane that I can't find a more relatable aroace character when it's the freaking 2020 but have to go all the way back to the late 1800s to find someone with a great aroace "presentation".)
But just like Holmes, I also really enjoy challenging my brain and I love to "play a detective". Altho I'm actually a terrible detective because I want everything to be somewhat special and non-cliché so I easily miss any clues that are too normal. And I'm not even nearly as smart as him, but I kinda have the same egoism sometimes that I still like to think I'm smart when I'm actually not :D I also have been playing the SH games and omg I love those games! Sometimes they're driving me crazy tho because I'm so unpatient and just don't get something right away and then I look it up and feel myself stupid because it was again something obvious but I was just again trying to think too much outside the box.
I want to go back to the books for a moment: one thing I did notice from the stories is that now as I have read quite a many of those stories, I have learnt Doyle's way of telling stories. I am now able to notice when he does that where he starts to give in clues that will lead the reader to the wrong conclusions, and that way I can already guess the actual events of the story. It was actually pretty cool moment when I was reading this one story and suddenly realized that Doyle is doing it again, he's trying to lead the reader to the wrong direction on purpose and I didn't fall for that trap anymore. And ever since it's been like this with every story. I'm excited to see if his writing style changed or evolved from this and if he ever stopped doing that. But yeah, it was super fascinating experience to myself because I do that in real life too: I observe people a lot and I slowly start to understand how they are as persons and e.g. how their sense of humour works. For example, with new people I don't always catch their "prank" humour or sarcasm but after a while, I'm able to spot when they're only joking and won't fall for those jokes/pranks any longer, and sometimes can also join the jokes myself as well. I think that's also something that kinda reminds of of Holmes' character, at least he's really good at observing people and his surroundings - I do that all the time as well.
***
🌧️- favorite thing to do on rainy days?
The same things I do every day - sit inside spending quality time with my computer XD No but, if it's a rainy day in a pretty way, like a summer rain, then it sometimes like playing with my camera and try getting photos of the rain drops or something. And especially if the sun starts shining after the rain and often creates these super interesting looking lighting phenomenons like coloring the whole air with yellow etc.!
Today is actually a rainy day and I FINALLY planted some plants I've been meaning to plant for months.
***
🍩- current mood?
Well pretty okay, just tired because it's that time of the month again, and I even got myself to use the exercise bike because I noticed I've again reached a weight I have never reached before and I've been trying to get my weight to come down for years. But it just goes up the more I try to do things like exercise and nothing makes sense, ever.
I'm also feeling slightly hyped because of dä, my anxiety and stress levels are finally reducing a little and also my mouth doesn't feel too bad anymore so I don't have those sensory overloads 24/7 either. And I'm gonna play Valheim with friends later today again so I'm really looking forward to that :D
Oh and it's extremely windy outside and the sounds of wind piss me off every single time. I don't know what it is, probably misophonia, but it just makes me feel so angry when I hear that wind hitting the walls or so. Maybe I should do something that I can listen to music meanwhile so it will hide the sounds of that wind underneath...
***
⛅- what is your morning routine?
I wake up, (check Bademeister.com), get up, turn on the computer on my way to toilet, pee, brush my teeth... Usually I do that at my computer while browsing Discord servers and Tumblr etc. After I'm done brushing my teeth I often just spend time browsing the internet, I always check the same websites like my email and browse everything on Tumblr and it depends how much time that takes, sometimes a couple of hours.
So I then get myself breakfast either when I'm still browsing Tumblr (if I'm really hungry) or only after I'm done with browsing. I also always eat my breakfast either at my computer or in the living room as I watch tv. Can't just sit still in my kitchen doing nothing so I hardly ever eat there :D And when I have eaten my breakfast, then I make myself tea. I never eat anything with it but I just start and finish my tea after I'm done eating.
That's my morning routine. But bold of you that it's always a morning when this happens. Sometimes I eat my breakfast at 5pm, sometimes at 9am ::D

I got tagged to do a thing! By @drjohnwatson.
Relationship status: Permanently, chronically single. Not exactly by choice, because I’m socially inept and fail the one-foot rule.
Favorite color: I think blue? I’m not sure I do particularly favour one colour above all others though.
Lipstick or chapstick: Lip balm. Lipstick means makeup, and makeup is WAY too much effort.
Last song I listened to: …good question. I’m earworming “Dance in my Pants”, though. Great song, if you skip through the cringey dialogue in the middle.
Last movie I watched: Quite possibly Kingsman, on the plane home from LA.
Top 3 TV shows: erm. By frequency, it’d have to be Stop Search Seize, Road Wars, and Border Patrol because they’re the daytime tv that goes on in the background when I’m trying not to get involved… by preference, I’m not sure. Until recently I worked in the evenings, so I didn’t really watch much tv at all. Let’s go with Being Human, Granada Holmes and - throwback to 5 year old me - A Little Princess(1986 LWT version. Not the glurgetastic, historically- and literarily-inaccurate 1995 film that 9 year old me loathed with a passion.)
Top 3 characters: Gene Hunt, Elle Woods, Lafayette(honestly I don’t know how to pick them, those are just three of the cool ones who came to mind first)(and am I talking True Blood or Hamilton? You decide.)
Top 3 ships: I… don’t actually know? I find it weird how much I’ve been swept along with Johnlock, I don’t tend to ship anyone with anyone else. I don’t think. I’m questioning my entire existence now.
Books I’m currently reading: Re-reading relatively random Holmes canon, sort of reading Phantom of the Opera to copy down my notes and observations on it. Still trying to write Strange Affair, y'see.
5 things in my bag: handbag hook for hanging the handbag off the edge of a table or what have you, a novelty Red Nose Day pen, at least one notebook, a lip balm from La Nouba that sadly lost its gorgeous pina colada flavour when it accidentally got washed, my Oyster card.
5 things in my room: a pair of beautiful rollerskates that stare at me reproachfully, three half-dead PCs that I want to Frankenstein together into a working machine, an r-kive box full of clothes to be altered/mended, a plastic crate full of random crafting materials, a selection of Venetian masks that were intended for something crafty.
5 things on my to-do list: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHahem finish a couple of tops I started making three years ago, finish ANY piece of writing longer than a oneshot, find a job, sand down and revarnish the coffee table in the living room, work out what the hell to do with my life or at least something vaguely satisfying to do in the interim.
5 things I’m currently into: Sherlock Holmes(multiple versions but mostly the one inside my head), nail art - specifically this technique I found for doing paua shell by blobbing up multiple layers of different colours and filing them down, staring into the future with mute existential dread, superindulgent fanfiction, oversharing.
And now to tag… @icouldwritebooks @cheapthrilling @clairewritesthings @erikonil @amuseoffyre @chartermagic @kizzkitten @knittedlove-blog @cocodean @the-last-teabender @ironparadigm-blog @minxiekitten @princesparklypants @arlwithak No pressure on anyone to fill this in!
