#wanna know how ppl do it

Lol yeah, that’s making the rounds again. I’m less of a hater of that post in particular, bc yeah sure if you aren’t trying to do a specific kind of deep worldbuilding then keep things vague. However, if you’re trying to build a cohesive, complicated timeline, where backstory elements coherently interact in a way that you want readers to predict, PLEASE use numbers.

(Also, do whatever you want forever. This is just my personal take on the discussion.)

Tbh I think the better conversation here is WHEN and HOW to use numbers in SF worldbuilding! Because,,,, timelines important??? But it’s also not an all or nothing thing.

My main setting has a canon timeline that gets pretty dang specific with years. The reason it’s specific is so that I can check the consistency of lore/backstory/past events against each other, and also so that I can manage subplots occurring in separate locations. If I didn’t get specific with numbers here, the story would blow over like a house of cards. I NEED those numbers.

(Note: I don’t tell readers all those numbers. But I know them, and I reveal them as relevant to the plot.)

However, there are many places where I DONT get super consistent with numbers. For example: character ages. My main characters have canon ages some of the time, when I’ve cared to reveal this in a given part of the timeline. My side characters do not have canon ages. There are two options for most.

1.) they have one of three “stock” ages, which means I can earmark them as belonging to the same generation without worrying about inconsistency. I don’t usually include these ages in text.

2.) they have a general age range that I understand, but no canon number whatsoever. This gives me flexibility to go back and add to their lore. Also, when characters reach a certain state of “idk, adult,” their ages do not matter to the worldbuilding or plot. It gives more relevant detail to describe how they behave, how much they’ve accomplished in life, and how people perceive them than their actual specific age.

So, use numbers where it aids the story, and leave em out when it doesn’t? This isn’t rocket science.

The other thing is, like - if you’re so pressed about Some Guy calling you out, get some beta readers, and have them check ur numbers???? It’s called editing, babes!! Sometimes the detail-oriented persnickety guy is actually ur friend!!! Nothing need be perfect on your first pass, but if you’re going for better consistency, check and edit your work. Ask for help from others. No man is an island, goddamn.

Hot take? A show with queer people in it from the beginning was never queerbaiting and— very literally and technically— never could. In the first episode, a gay man comes out to his family. And he doesn’t stop being gay after that; it’s a major plot point and part of his character going forward. You’ve had a married lesbian couple from the jump who are proud and unapologetic about their love for each other. The story has also portrayed several queer couples and stories in episodic plots, including featuring queer weddings.

Buck didn’t suddenly “become” bi. Queerness is not when straight people “turn” queer. He has been attracted to men the entire time; he has always been bi. Understanding yourself and your sexuality as a queer person is often so difficult under heteronormativity. Sometimes, it takes time.

Hell— Buck checking a guy out some time in season 3 or getting flustered by the idea he might like a guy, etc, etc, are not even examples “queerbaiting,” nevermind how the show already features queer stories.

I genuinely think some of y’all are just mad that he’s not sucking face with the man you want him to, and are being weirdly homophobic about it. “Buck kissing this man is kinda off-putting, lmao.�� “Buck and his bf’s relationship is awkward. Life isn’t fanfiction and fanfiction tropes don’t make good writing. Most relationships start out with a “hey, I’m interested in you, let’s get to know each other.” You’re just transparently uncomfortable with two men expressing that interest in each other outside the arbitrary rules you’ve established to make a mlm relationship “legitimate” or “meaningful.”

[Fanfiction] tropes— from “there’s only one bed” to “we’re forced together, but fall in love anyway”— are responses to the sex-negativity and purity culture norms forced upon gender and sexual minorities. They provide a workaround for these norms but never a direct challenge. It’s like the Family Guy episode “Prick Up Your Ears,” where conservative Christian abstinence-only sex education leads to kids having ear sex. Ear sex is the workaround to the abstinence and purity rules they’d been taught, not the challenge. We still have stringent rules around who can touch whom and under what circumstances. Tropes reflect this. So, a trope like “there’s only one bed” provides the characters with a justification for their intimacy without directly challenging why it is taboo.

You’ve convinced yourself that shipping— and thus the tropes it employs— is more subversive than actual representation, and the people caught in the crossfire are actual queer people.

Also— for the love of fuck— stop comparing every mlm relationship to RW&RB.

There's a lot of validity in the idea that older Bakugo is a traumatized pro-hero with major PTSD... but you know what's kinda fucked up to think about? The fact that Bakugo is also a 22-year-old pro-hero with major PTSD even before that, too.

It's almost easy to imagine that things are actually better when he's older (the therapy finally a routine, the trauma long set and on the path to being healed)... and that it's his whole 20s that are spent as a pool of disaster trying to recover from the war(s).

He looks back and barely even remembers being twenty, much less twenty-five or twenty-seven. Barely remembers how little he slept, not at the hands of trying to balance hero work and getting a degree at the same time, but just out of the pure insomnia that came from trying to move on and every nightmare attached.

Hardly ever showering, never shaving (not that he ever grew much of a beard, but the facial hair was definitely there. There's pictures of him on the news with an awkward, grown out haircut and patches on facial hair that make him look positively... immature), barely even eating more than a few protein bars or an energy jelly drink-a day. It's a blur, and his friends are hardly there to pick him up out of it because they're all going through it, too. Somewhat.

It's definitely weird if you meet him during this period. He's not all there, at least, not all of the time. He doesn't really register your interactions, the friendship you extend to him (a younger, or ever older, version of him would've shown you that deep seeded ferocity in response, tried to bite the hand that fed him, even if it were love... but 20s Bakugo... doesn't seem to notice). Even though only one of his eyes is clouded over, the good one never seems to brighten up.

There's definitely moments when the old him shines through: when he's with Deku, when he's in the midst of battle, when he finds out that Todoroki still does a shitty job at chopping scallions. But it's a long time before he's even close to the same, able to step out from underneath the fog of simply surviving and into the sunshine of recovering.

But I think sticking through it with him is worth it.

(It's a weird moment, a happy moment, the first time you realize that Bakugo has changed. That the pouring rain outside hasn't bothered him since he showed up at your apartment. He forgot his umbrella, he's been quite careless ever since the war—wet and shaggy hair frizzed up, cheeks red from cold—but he doesn't seem to mind, with his bare feet up on your coffee table, his eyes gazing out the window. You hand his tea, and instead of gulping it down in one go, letting it burn in his throat, he winces at the heat.

"Tastes like shit," he says, and you laugh because it always does. Just this time, he noticed.)
