AZIAM + Waif

This one is the most tenuous connection, basically just a vibe. There's a least a decade separating the release of these dolls, and they're both so unimaginably obscure in the fashion doll world I can't imagine the people behind one could possibly have been aware of the other. AND YET. Something about the eyes, the bangs, the chunky braids, the oddly flat skin tone--I can't tell you exactly why, but my aesthetic sense says these dolls just belong together. So they'll probably hang out.

I discussed Bunnyhood Pink at length in a previous post, so I won't rehash all that here. If you're curious to learn more about AZ I AM...go for it. Be warned, this is one of those extremely granola 'marketed at parents rather than kids' educational doll lines. Meant to education you about yoga. Problematic? Yeah maybe. But the articulation is amazing XD

Got an interesting one for you today, folks! This unassuming girlie is a strong contender for the rarest doll in my collection. Bunnyhood Pink is a Waif Doll, designed by artist and sculptor A.D. Puchalski, at one time more commonly known in the doll community as AngelDevil.

There were two previous handmade editions of Waif limited to 10 dolls each, but Bunnyhood Pink was the first--and to my knowledge only--of A.D.'s dolls to get a limited factory run. Still, it was a comparatively small run of only 100 dolls. She was originally sold at SDCC in 2004, but the remaining dolls were later was available through a few specialty toy retailers and on the Tower Records website.

Each doll came in a box signed and numbered by the artist, with a certificate of authenticity and handwritten wrist tag also denoting her edition number (mine keeps her tag stowed away in the tiny pocket of her apron). She's definitely more what I would consider an 'art' doll, in the vein of designer vinyl toys, rather than a true fashion doll. Although she has a delightfully unique face sculpt, her articulation is quite limited, and her clothing is nominally removable, but, you know, I wouldn't. She's a charming little oddity, but I don't think she was ever meant to be more than a one-off design project.

In the intervening years since the Waif dolls were released A.D. Puchalski has gone on to work in a wide variety of fields including comics illustration, animation, and cake sculpture, among others. As far as I can tell she still occasionally creates OOAK handmade plushes and BJDs, but if you take a look at her site linked above it appears her current crafty offerings are handpainted Matryoshkas.
