victim consciousness and manipulative behaviour; a childhood memory

"It reminds me of when I was a small child out on a weekly shopping trip with my mom. Afterwards, walking back to the car, I had a bit of a nasty trip and scraped up my knee. Naturally, I cried. My mom tried to console me and tend to the scrape, and then brought me into an ice cream shop we just happened to have been walking by. Upon receiving ice cream, the scraped knee was largely forgotten. The following week, walking by the same ice cream shop, I made myself fall on purpose and pretended to cry. My mom stared at me for a few moments, and then once again got me some ice cream. I repeated this performance again the next week. But this time my mom said: "If you don't get your butt up off the ground, I'll give you something to cry about." It makes me wonder what kind of an adult I would be now if I had been rewarded with ice cream every time I perceived myself to be the victim of some misfortune."

How to get out from the victim mentality?

ABANDON THE OLD MAN

There are many ways on how you can get out of this mentality

1st of all, define what you mean by "Victim mentality" because that specific phrase can mean a million things.

Take power over your own thoughts, reactions, emotions, and feelings by practicing being in the present moment.

The present moment is the key.

Whenever the old man/the old story comes up mentally tell it to "fuck off", yes that's right! If you find it "hard" to serve the new man, tell the old man to stfu. "I am on a different timeline and things are working out in my favour in the best way possible, so the old man simply has no place to exist on this timeline"

You can also try any of these to help you change your state:

- work on your self-concept

- journal / script

- find what makes you unique (define your strengths and talents)

- focusing on the new state

- listening to affirmation tapes

But at the end of the day, when you know the world is under your feet and nobody can ever compare with you because you are irresistible, irreplaceable, and unforgettable, then you can't be in a victim mentality (so prioritize your self-concept and mental health above anything)

Thank you for those posts 😭 maybe it's just me but I've seen a lot of mocking posts like that since becoming a fan and it's real upsetting. I don't want to complain about liking the most popular character past his prime, and more especially as a davekat shipper, but it still stings.

i'm really sorry that that's been your experience. i've definitely noticed that the homestuck fandom can be startlingly unsafe for abuse victims, and really weird about discussion of abuse in general... which is so surprising and disappointing since the comic itself does not shy away from these themes whatsoever.

of course, nobody is being oppressed for liking a character who was for a long stretch of time THE most popular homestuck character. but, you'd think with him being so popular that people would actually analyze him beyond subscribing to weird fanon.

and those weird fanonizations also go hand in hand with the mischaracterization of other characters, like "dave is stupid and repressed and doesn't know anything" feeds into "rose is an all-knowing therapist child who solves everyone else's problems for them instead of having her own personality".

overall i don't think it's ever appropriate to say that abuse can be "deserved" no matter how much you dislike a character. and i really think the homestuck fandom needs to think more critically about homestuck's themes of abuse in general-- like fuck i still see meenah shipped with karkat in main tags!

and obviously this is by far the least important part of ANY of this, but i'm going to pretty strongly dissociate myself from anything relating to that smp-- mostly for my own mental health (again, not to center myself here). as for CS, i would like to continue it, though obviously the disclaimers again will be heavy. it is a story i wrote to cope with abuse, and if fanworks like that are called to be stopped then i will obviously rethink things. but i will give it a lot of time to figure out how to meaningfully create something from a piece of media created by unfathomably shitty people, and i'd like to be able to continue writing for the message that CS was set to convey.

again, this is not the focus of the conversation, but i just wanted to say that since i am online for once and i figure i may get an ask or two about it.
