Been thinking a loooot about Down Among the Dead Men and Audric from Tevinter Nights and just thinking about how Emmrich is constantly around spirits and the dead and I’m wondering… how often does Emmrich have to reassure himself that he himself isn’t dead? Or his friends aren’t dead? Surreptitiously taking his own pulse, his friends’ pulse, always making sure hearts are still beating, people are still breathing, not unnaturally cold or out of their right mind, etc.

And then he falls in love with Rook and finds himself checking Rook’s pulse as much as possible—at first it’s only when they take a big hit to make sure they haven’t died, but then it becomes almost compulsive—whenever Rook is sleeping he lays his head on their chest to listen to their heart, when they’re holding hands his fingers trail up their arm to touch their wrist, leaning in to kiss the veins in Rook’s neck and feeling their heartbeat quicken beneath his lips…
