The Bushwhack Job: Chapter Two
Chapter One
Tumblr media
The building wasn’t supposed to explode.
Well, it was, but it wasn’t supposed to explode yet.
Parker had the C4 charges in her bag, ready for her to plant them against the support beams in the basement at the half-constructed LanCast offices. The blast wouldn’t take down the building, just shake the foundation enough that the resulting investigation would find the cheap ash mixture in the concrete, and they’d be able to prove that Stephen Lancaster had embezzled the city grant money that was supposed to go into his new high-rise company building.
The plan had been for her to place the charges an hour ago, but she’d gotten distracted by the candy store down the road and had been late. Now, she stood on the sidewalk across from the burning office, watching their evidence literally go up in flames, listening to the firefighters yell directions as they fought to control the destruction. Normally she enjoyed a good explosion, but this one made her feel the way Hardison said he felt when he jumped off buildings.
She was supposed to be inside.
“Guys?” she tried again, holding her finger to her earbud. “Can anybody hear me?”
The coms had been silent all afternoon, but she hadn’t thought anything of it. Hardison had pulled an all-nighter getting their paperwork together and was napping back at the hotel, and Nate and Sophie were across town distracting Lancaster so Parker could break into his building. Eliot was probably out shopping for organic groceries at the nearest vegan market. She’d asked him to make her brownies to celebrate the her birthday (which wasn’t for another two months, but Eliot never asked), and he’d only agreed after she promised to eat some vegetables first. He’d said something about a vegetarian bourguignon, but she’d tuned him out when he started listing ingredients.
She’d give the Centenary Diamond to hear him ramble about beans and onions now.
More sirens cut through the air, and Parker drew back as a police car and a black SUV joined the dozen law enforcement and first responder vehicles already parked on the street. The back door of the SUV opened, and Lancaster threw himself out of the car with a cry of dismay.
A police officer stopped him as he ran for the building, and Parker slipped across the street to join the crowd gathered outside the ring of cones and police tape.
“Mr. Lancaster,” the officer said. “We need you to confirm that no one was inside the building.”
“I don’t know,” Lancaster answered breathlessly. “The foreman said he might stop by to check on something. How did this happen?”
The officer guided Lancaster toward a group of firefighters, and Parker followed in the crowd. “We’re not sure yet. Captain Stanley should be able to give you more information.”
They moved out of earshot, but it only took a few minutes for Parker to duck the tape, find an unattended coat and helmet, and move to the side of a firetruck behind Lancaster and the captain. “—can’t believe this happened,” Lancaster was saying. “I never imagined the threats were real.”
“What threats?” the officer said.
Lancaster put a hand in his pocket and handed over a folded envelop. “This showed up in my downtown office yesterday morning. It says there’s a group of thieves targeting me, and that they were planning to blow up my building. I get so many threats each week, I never thought anything of it.”
Parker glanced over her shoulder. “Nate,” she hissed. “I really need you to hear me now. We have problems.”
“I’m going to have to ask you to come in to the station to give a statement,” the officer said. “Anything you can give us about this group of thieves will help us...”
He kept talking, but a shout from the crowd pulled her attention away. Hardison. She started toward him, relief washing through her, but let out another cry that cut through her chest like a bullet. “Parker! Move, please, I have to—”
He tore through the police tape and broke toward the building, but two other officers blocked his way and dragged him back from the fire. “Let me go, she’s inside—please, let me go. Let me—”
“I got him,” Parker said, pushing between the officers and setting her hand on Hardison’s arm. “Come on, sir, this way.”
He fought her for a moment, still intent on forcing his way through the barricade, until she put her hand against his cheek to turn his face from the fire.
“Please,” he whispered, already sagging against her.
She held him up, moving to block his view of the building. “Hardison,” she said firmly, hating the way the flashing lights highlighted the anguish on his face.
He blinked at her, opened his mouth, and rubbed a hand over his eyes. “Parker?”
“Yes,” she said.
He threw his arms around her, crushing her against his chest and burying his face in her neck. “Thank God,” he sobbed. “Girl, I thought—I saw the news, and I couldn’t get you on the coms, and I thought—”
Guilt prickled through her. Hardison was always so careful about the way he touched her, making sure she had space and choice and an escape route. But his shoulders shook against her cheek, and she pressed back into his hug as a silent apology. “I hadn’t gone in yet,” she murmured.
He pulled away, but kept his hands on her shoulders. “What happened?”
“I think we’re blown,” Parker said, frowning at the building. “Lancaster just showed up and said he received a warning that a bunch of thieves were going to blow up his office.”
“But you didn’t...?”
Parker shook her head. “It was already burning when I got here. What’s going on with the coms?”
“I don’t know.” Hardison’s eyes were on the fire now, too, and he let go with one hand to fish in his pocket for his phone. “I woke up and saw this all on the news, and when no one answered their phones, I thought...”
Right, phones. Hardison kept saying she should carry one of those with her, but it never made sense when they had the earbuds. Who else was she going to talk to?
“Where are the others?” she asked.
“I don’t know,” Hardison said. He showed her his screen, which flashed no service across the top. “I can’t get ahold of anyone.”
Parker shivered as a pulse of worry worked its way down her spine. No coms? No phones? Lancaster's warning, and now the building? Something was wrong.
“Eliot said to go back to base if the coms ever failed,” Hardison said, breaking through her spiral. “I guess that’s the hotel.”
Parker nodded. He’d walked them all through it—how to take winding routes that changed direction without warning, how to spot a tail, how to get rid of it. How to approach the base carefully in case it had been compromised. Unease fluttered in her stomach, but she pushed it down and gave Hardison a small smile.
“Can I drive?”
Hardison groaned, sighed, and handed over his keys.
*
Nate and Sophie were waiting for them at the hotel.
Eliot was not.
They’d made it back without trouble, even if the extra turns and backtracking had cost them extra time. Sophie met them at the door and ushered them into the room, where Nate was planted pensively in front of the window. He spoke without looking at them.
“Lancaster ducked us. We lost him. What’s going on with the coms?”
Hardison dropped onto the couch and dragged his laptop across the coffee table. “I don’t know. I haven’t had a chance to look into it.”
“Do you think it was Lancaster?” Sophie asked. She had closed the door behind them and was pacing before it, her shawl clutched tight around her shoulders.
Parker sat on the arm of the couch. “Or whoever warned him?”
“Yeah, about that,” Hardison said, without looking up from his laptop. “Who the hell could have warned him? Our aliases are air-tight, a’ight, didn’t nobody see through those. Maybe someone on his staff recognized one of us?”
“We would have recognized them, too,” Sophie said.
Hardison shrugged and opened his mouth, but Nate cut him off. “The phones aren’t working, either. Have either of you heard from Eliot?”
Parker shook her head, and Hardison scooted closer to his laptop.
“I might be able to track him. Give me a sec.”
Nate waited. They all did, tense under the weight of anxiety and silence. Hardison tapped his keyboard, Sophie rubbed her forefinger over her thumbnail, and Nate stared out the window. Parker tried to remember what kinds of vegetables Eliot said he was going to make her eat that night. She liked it when he picked the weird ones—black carrots and watermelon radish and fiddleheads. She liked to stand behind him and sneak the pieces he’d chopped up and smile when he stuttered at her to stop. She liked to share the space with him while he created.
She did not like the way Hardison’s eyes squinted up as he read his screen, or the way he covered his mouth and took out his phone. “Does anyone have service?”
One by one, the others shook their heads.
Hardison glanced at Parker. “Okay. We’re looking for a signal jammer—a walkie-talkie, or another phone, maybe even a router. Something that’s not supposed to be there.”
She bounded to her feet and threw herself into searching/destroying the room, upending chairs, de-shading lamps, ripping down curtains. The others took slightly more reserved approaches, but Parker was the one who found the cellphone taped to the back of the register.
Hardison held it in his palm and frowned. “Uh-oh.”
The balloon of hope that had been inflating in Parker’s chest popped. She couldn’t voice the question, but Hardison answered anyway.
“This isn’t a jammer… it’s more like my EMP emitter. This is what knocked out our coms, and our phones. It sends out a small, targeted signal, probably only has power in this room, but when we were all here yesterday, it would have been enough.”
“Can you reverse it?” Nate asked.
Hardison shook his head. “I can turn it off, but we have to wait for our devices to come back online. What I can do, though, is transfer the info on our phones over to new ones, so we’ll know if Eliot tries to call.”
Nate spoke to the window. “Do it.”
Parker frowned at Nate as Hardison went back to work, but Nate was busy with his own phone. This was taking too long. If they’d been found out, if someone had gotten to Eliot—
“Okay,” Hardison said. “I need new phones. Parker, can you—?”
She was out of the room and halfway down the hall before he finished talking. Nate didn’t like it when she stole from non-marks, but she didn’t have time to find a phone store, and she’d return them all before this was over. There were plenty of people in the lobby, and it only took a few moments to lift four shiny new-to-her phones from their pockets, bags, and purses.
She took the stairs back up to the room, keeping an eye on the other hotel guests the way Eliot had taught her. Remember the faces you see. Find details that stand out and hold on to them. Facial features, voices, walks. Things that are harder to change.
She noticed those things easily enough, but she’d never understand how he could remember so much about the people in the background.
How much he saw. What he thought was important.
She ran faster.
“Got them,” she said, slipping into the room and dropping the phones on the couch beside Hardison. He lifted one and pried the back off, then pulled a chip out of Nate’s already half-dissembled phone and stuck it into the new one. He snapped the back closed and turned it on, then held it up with a nod. “There. Eliot called two hours ago, and he left a voicemail.”
He tapped the screen and held it out so they could listen on speaker.
“Nate.”
Parker swallowed. Eliot’s voice on the message was cold and flat—she’d never heard him like that before.
“We’re burned. Get Sophie and Hardison and go to another hotel—new names, new cards, everything. Get rid of your phones. Don’t leave a trail—I’ll find you. I just got a text from an unknown number with a picture of Parker on her way to the LanCast building, and then a message saying they had her.” There was a pause, the crash of a slamming door through the speaker. “I’m on my way to her now. Be ready.”
The message ended. All eyes went to Parker, who could only stare back as her body went cold. “They didn’t have me,” she whispered.
Nate swore. “They set a trap. Hardison, can you get a track on him?”
Hardison’s eyes were wide, and filled with all the terror coursing through Parker’s veins.
“Last location was the LanCast office,” he whispered. “But the signal went dead an hour ago, when...”
He didn’t finish.
He didn’t have to.

Now I Really Know
Summary: Marc doesn’t have anything of his own in the flat, so Steven tries to decorate with some of his favorite things. Part 2 of Fire Within My Soul. Masterlist.
Word Count: 3.1k
Tumblr media
Warnings: Talk of Death and the Afterlife, Panic Attacks, Flashbacks. Talk of Food and Eating.
~~~
They didn’t need to put tape on the door anymore. Steven didn’t need to tie himself to the support beam beside his bed, and he certainly did not need to pour a ring of sand to catch evidence of stray footprints. The first order of business for Marc and Steven upon their arrival in London, then, was to brush up on their interior design skills.
In other words, the flat was in dire need of some redecoration.
Marc started at the front of the apartment, working his way backwards. He swept the kitchen and lounge, threw the rugs in the wash and wiped the weeks of accumulating dust off of the furniture. He washed the countertops and stacked all the books off of the floor. He even took the time to organize the cupboards. The mindless work relaxed him. He played 70s rock music off of Steven’s spotify, ignoring the urge to make fun of the playlists of classical music he had to bypass in the process. Marc took more than half of the day working on just the front five meters of the flat before hunger stopped him. He turned to the fridge, wrinkling his nose at the lack of food within it. All the produce had gone bad, and cereal and oatmeal weren’t going to cut it for lunch.
“Sorry, mate. Guess we need to stock up on some of your food, yeah?” Steven stirred at the growling of their stomach. Marc smiled a bit at the way he said your food. “I don’t keep much around here, on account of I’m such a shit cook. I usually just order out after I get off work, or grab something on the way home.”
“Don’t worry about it. We need to go to Tesco anyway. All your cleaning supplies are shit.”
Marc felt the defensiveness run through Steven at the comment. He smiled a little wider. “Oy, they’re not shit. They’re ecological. They clean just fine, they just don’t dissolve every living thing in the vicinity like Clorox does.”
“Yeah, well, Clorox wouldn’t hurt in this place. It’s like a cyclone went through here.”
“Suppose the place gets messy when I’m unconscious for days at a time.”
Marc blushed, and then it was Steven’s turn to smile.
“C’mon. Let’s get some lunch, then we can go to the store and pick out some junk food for you. And some Clorox.”
~~~~
Marc had nearly forgotten how to grocery shop. Ever since he had married Layla, she had handled the shopping, mostly because she handled the cooking. Marc loved her cooking, and he wasn’t one to ask for much in the way of domestic things. So, Steven had to guide him through the rows of Tesco to find all his foods of choice. Marc may have been good at following orders, but he didn’t like to admit when things were out of his depth.
“That next row’s got toiletries, so we can go down it if my current shampoo choices offend you.”
“I don’t have a problem with it, but I could grab some hair gel. Tired of your hair falling in my face every time I look down.” They turned the corner sharply, nearly knocking over a display of makeup wipes in the process.
“My hair? You know we share a body, right?”
“Well, yeah. But I couldn't exactly get a buzz cut without you noticing something was different, could I?” He grabbed the gel off of the shelf.
“...Fair enough.”
They wandered further down the aisle, and Marc’s eyes lingered on the curl cream that Layla used. He remembered her mentioning to him once that it would do wonders on his hair. But he also would not be caught dead using curl cream. Steven touted, “and we’re not getting a buzz cut.”
Neither of them was anything close to an expert on grooming products, so they left the aisle just as quick as they entered. As they ventured through the grocery section, Steven pointed out several of his favorite vegan snacks for Marc to grab, while Marc filled a significant portion of the cart with TV dinners and packaged food. Steven grimaced at a box of Swiss Rolls that his alter had grabbed, which Marc used as an opportunity to remind Steven that only one of them goes to the gym, so he can eat whatever he wants.
“Not sure that’s how it works, mate.”
“Shut up. That’s definitely how it works.”
They reached the end of the food section, where the store opened into several aisles of home goods ranging from video-games to gardening tools. They’d gotten their groceries, though, and Marc was already uncomfortable being directed around the store by Steven. Marc swerved his shopping cart toward the registers, but a tug of his hand stopped him from moving. Steven attempted to move the cart toward the pop culture section.
“What are you doing?” Marc demanded, trying and failing to maintain full control.
“Well, I was just thinking…”
Marc scoffed. “I don’t really like when you do that.”
“Marc! Listen, our flat is full of my stuff, right? Books and puzzles and whatever, but there’s nothing of yours. Besides the little flip-phone you hid in my wall and the storage locker of illegal shit, there’s no trace of you at all around here. I think we should get some things for decoration that make the place yours.”
That was out of Marc’s depth, for sure. Steven was asking him to decorate? Marc’s idea of a cozy home was four walls and a bed. He hadn’t asked for more than that in… well, as long as he could remember. His Star Wars poster and Tomb Buster action figures had lasted a year or so after Randall’s death before they were destroyed in a fit of Wendy’s rage. Since then, he’d never asked for another poster or figurine. In the marines, he couldn’t have many personal items anyway. Marc’s environment for the last few decades at least had been nothing more than functional.
Decoration? Where would he even start?
“We don’t have to do that. I like the apartment the way that it is.” Marc jerked the cart back toward the front of the store. “Let’s just get out of here.”
“I want to at least get something that you like. What about a Cubs poster or something?”
“I doubt they have a Chicago Cubs poster in a Tesco in London.”
“Then we’ll order one.”
Marc huffed and shook his head, but having Steven order him posters online was better than spending any more time in a superstore. The overhead fluorescents were already burning a hole in Marc’s skull, not to mention the chattering of shoppers and the cheery music that blared from the speakers in the corners. If letting Steven buy him decorations would get him out of here, then so be it.
“Okay. We’ll order one.”
At least Tesco had a self checkout, Marc thought. No painful small talk to be made with the cashier, and no odd looks at the combination of vegan health foods and sugar-filled junk. The repetition of scanning items helped to calm the both of them from the overwhelm of the store’s atmosphere. They finished checking out quickly, and Marc felt their body release half of its tension the very moment they got out the door.
“You sure you don’t want to go to Forbidden Planet and pick some stuff out?”
“I’m sure, buddy. But thanks.”
The walk home was quiet then. Marc didn’t need anyone to guide him through that bit. When they got back to the flat, it was mid-afternoon and uncomfortably hot on the fifth floor of the centuries-old complex. Marc packed away the groceries, then he picked up where he had left off. He wiped the countertops, he cleaned the loo, and he fidgeted with the items on Steven’s prayer table until there was nothing else to clean there. Marc was covered in sweat and moving on near auto-pilot by the time he decided to move to the bedroom.
“You want to take a break, mate?” Steven asked him gently. That seemed to stir Marc from whatever trance he’d been in. “You’ve been at it all day. You’re exhausting yourself.”
Marc scoffed and deflected. “I’m not tired. I’m fine.”
“You are absolutely tired. I can feel it.”
“What? No you can’t.”
“Of course I can!” Steven raised his tone a bit. Not angry, but assertive. “Every time you over-work the body, I’m the one who deals with the aftermath. The fatigue, the soreness, all that. I just thought it was sleep walking before, but now I know that it’s really just you refusing to take a breather.”
Marc sat in the desk chair, spinning to face the bed and lean back against the mahogany. His legs flooded with relief as he took the weight off of them. He tried to ignore Stevens ‘I told you so’ smirk in the dresser mirror. He felt the urge to deny the defeat.
“The place is still a wreck. I can’t leave it like this any longer.” He couldn’t even convince himself with that tone, but he would be damned if Steven got the satisfaction. “I gotta clean up the sand, at least.”
“I’ll do it,” Steven piped immediately. “It’s your turn to rest.”
“No, Steven--”
“I’m the one who put it there anyway, right? I should be the one to clean it up. Now, go rest, and let me take the body.”
Marc grumbled a noise of protest, but the longer he sat in the office chair, the harder it was to stand back up. He was pretty tired, wasn’t he? Of course, both of them had been downright exhausted for as long as they could remember. Steven pushed against the front and, finally, Marc resigned to the weight in his chest. He could use a nap, anyway. He took a deep breath, exhaled slowly, and surrendered the body to Steven.
“Have a nice nap, mate.”
At least three bags of sand covered the floor around Steven’s bed. It formed an oval around the mattress, a ring about two-feet wide with several loose grains sprinkled over the rest of the floor. Steven started by shoveling the bigger mounds into the trash with the dustpan, not bothering to pull out the broom when sand seemingly covered his floor by the ton. He scooped up as much as he could before it became too inefficient, then he decided to enlist the broom for help. He stood to get it from the closet. In the process, Steven accidentally knocked his Rubik’s cube off of his nightstand and into the bin full of sand.
He reached down to pull it free, closing his hand around it and starting to lift when his whole body shuddered. The cube dropped out of his hand and sank deeper into the bin. Steven sunk his whole hand into the trash, right up to his wrist. His body shuddered again, and he felt frozen.
There was sand. Of course there was sand, he was cleaning the sand from his bed. But it was not the same sand that he’d felt for two months. It was cold, coarse. It was biting.
His hand was covered in sand. Trapped in sand. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t breathe, and the coldness bit all the way to his bones. He tried to suck in air, but his lungs were filled with sand. The grains filled his mouth, they scraped against his skin until it was raw and burning and icy and--
He couldn’t breathe.
He was stuck here.
Frozen.
He was frozen in the sand.
He was going to be trapped there forever.
“Steven?” a muffled voice rang in his head. It sounded underwater. Or maybe he was the one underwater. That would explain why he couldn’t breathe. The voice kept talking to him, but he couldn’t quite hear it. It was too far away, and he couldn’t get closer. He couldn’t move.
He was stuck in the sand.
It was louder now. “Steven.”
He tried to listen for it. The cold was far too strong, it was all he could focus on. His heart was beating so hard, so fast. It rang in his ears. But how could his heart be beating? He was frozen in sand.
“Steven? What happened?”
He looked around for the source of the voice, but he couldn’t see anything except for miles and miles of dark, cold desert. He brought his hands to his chest, pressing against his heart to stop the painful bashing against his ribs. His lungs were burning, his throat was dry. His tongue was coated in sand.
There was nothing but sand.
“Steven? Can you hear me?” He recognized the voice now. Marc repeated his name a few more times, the gentleness barely concealing his worry. “Steven, buddy. It’s alright. You’re alright.”
“I can’t breathe,” Steven managed to say between gasps. “I can’t move. The sand…”
“You’re okay,” Marc insisted.
Steven felt deep pressure behind his eyes. “I can’t. I can’t!”
“Yes you can.” Steven’s face was hot. Tears streamed down his face. “Open your eyes, bud. Everything is fine. You just need to calm down.”
His voice was hoarse. “I can’t.”
The pressure in his head was getting worse.
“I’m gonna take the body, Steven. You’re hyperventilating.”
That wasn’t right. Marc couldn’t take the body. He was still on the boat. The pressure turned into pain. Sharp pain. Steven buried his face between his knees and squeezed his arms around himself as hard as he could. His head was pounding. He couldn’t remember how to breathe. But then, he didn’t have to, did he?
And suddenly, the pressure was gone. The cold was gone, and he could see again. He watched as Marc uncurled from the fetal position and rose to his knees. He fished the cube out of the trash, shaking it off before setting it back in its place on the stand. Marc carefully stood, bracing himself on the mattress, and began to walk toward the broom closet.
“Steven? You still with me?” He asked softly.
Steven made a choked noise of affirmation.
“Are you okay?”
He pondered his answer while Marc took the broom from the closet. The methodical swipe of straw across the wooden floor helped Steven’s mind to run at a normal pace again. He held onto the feeling of the broom handle in their palms. The sensation of sweat running down their neck grounded him a little more. The body had stopped crying now.
“I don’t know what happened. It’s like… I was there again.”
Marc furrowed his brow. “There?”
“The sand.”
Oh. “You mean in the Duat.”
A pang of guilt washed over Marc then. For everything Steven had helped him through, it didn’t seem right that Marc was the one taken to the Field of Reeds. He could vaguely remember the feeling of the sand on his skin. It was cold and stiff, but he’d felt it for only a moment. Even then, the heart in his hand was warm and soft. He hadn’t experienced the dreadful fear of being frozen there without hope of rescue. He’d never lost all hope in the Duat.
But Steven had.
“You’re not there anymore. You’re safe now. I promise.” He swept the first run of sand into the dustpan.
“I’m not,” Steven blurted. “We’re going to go there again. Whenever we die. I’m going to be stuck there again.”
“That’s not gonna happen,” Marc countered without skipping a beat. “I’m not gonna let that happen.”
“It’s not up to you.”
Marc swept up the rest of the sand in silence. Steven flinched each time he emptied the pan into the bin, but he refused to retreat backward. He didn’t want to be alone, even in sleep. The sun was starting to creep toward the horizon. It shone through the windows, illuminating the flat in hues of orange and gold. The warmth of the light settled into their skin on contact.
Marc spoke up again. “We need to learn more about each other.”
“What?” Had they not done that already? Was that not the whole point of their involuntary stay with Dr. Harrow?
“So the scales will balance. If we keep opening up, we can balance our scales. That way, when we get there again, we won’t have to worry about the sand.” Steven was speechless. He hadn’t put much thought into why he ended up in the sand. He just knew it was torture.
“You think that’ll work?” Steven hugged his chest, a gesture Marc could feel even as he continued to sweep the floor.
“It’s what the hippo said to do. I think that we’ll make it work. We’ve got plenty of time to do it, though. I don’t know what your plans are, but I don’t see us dying anytime soon.”
“So we just open up, and then we’ll go to the Field of Reeds? Just like that?”
Well, no. Steven will go to the Field of Reeds. Marc already burned that bridge. Taweret’s voice rang in his ears. “Leave here, and you can’t return.” He could never go back.
But Steven didn’t need to know that.
“Yeah, just like that. And don’t you think saving the world did something to help balance our scales, too? That has to count for a lot.”
“I hope so.” Marc unloaded the last pan of sand. He propped the dustpan and the broom against the wall and sat down on the bed. If his legs weren’t tired before, they sure as hell were now. And when did his back get so sore? Steven’s meek voice echoed in his head as he leaned back against the headboard.
“What was it like?”
“Huh?” A stray sunbeam drew a line across the apartment, shining right in their face. Marc closed his eyes, propping his head up with his hands.
“The Field of Reeds. What was it like?”
“Oh.” He racked his brain for the kind of poetry he needed to explain it. Marc wasn’t the best with words. “It was quiet. And warm, and sunny.”
He peered out the window, taking in the image of the sunset. The sky was painted with pinks and yellows and colors he couldn’t even describe. He tried to make sure that Steven was looking.
“It was just like this.”

Where to Get Vegan Hot Dogs Near Me: A Plant-Based Guide to Deliciousness
Tumblr media
For many, the hot dog evokes memories of summer barbecues and baseball games. But what if you follow a vegan lifestyle? Does that mean giving up on this classic American comfort food? Absolutely not! The world of vegan food has exploded in recent years, offering delicious and satisfying alternatives to traditional meat-based options.
The good news is, finding delectable vegan hot dogs is easier than ever! This guide will help you navigate the exciting world of plant-based hot dogs and point you in the direction of delicious options near you.
The Rise of the Vegan Hot Dog
Gone are the days of rubbery, flavorless veggie burgers. Today's plant-based hot dogs are bursting with flavor and texture, rivaling their meat-based counterparts in every way. Made from a variety of ingredients like lentils, beans, mushrooms, and seitan, vegan hot dogs offer a healthier and more sustainable alternative to traditional hot dogs.
Finding Vegan Hot Dogs Near You
The internet is your best friend when it comes to finding vegan hot dogs near you. Simply search for "Vegan Hot Dogs near me" and you'll be presented with a list of restaurants, grocery stores, and even food trucks offering plant-based hot dog options.
Hot Dog Restaurants Cater to Vegan Cravings
Many popular hot dog restaurants are jumping on the vegan bandwagon, offering delicious plant-based options alongside their traditional hot dogs. For instance, is there a Hot Dog Company in San Jose on your radar? Don't be surprised if they have a dedicated vegan section on their menu, featuring innovative hot dog creations made with plant-based sausages.
Look Beyond Hot Dog Stands: Grocery Stores Offer Plant-Based Options Too
Don't limit your search to restaurants! Many grocery stores now stock a wide variety of vegan hot dog options in their freezer section. Popular brands like Lightlife, Field Roast, and Beyond Meat offer delicious plant-based sausages that can be grilled, boiled, or even baked at home.
Frankfurters Hot Dogs: A Haven for Meat Lovers, But Can Vegans Join the Party?
Frankfurters Hot Dogs, known for their classic all-beef hot dogs, might not be the first place that comes to mind when searching for vegan options. However, with a little creativity, you can still enjoy the Frankfurters experience as a vegan. Many Frankfurters locations offer veggie burgers on their menu. You can also ask to substitute the hot dog in their combo meals with a veggie burger, creating your own plant-based version of their classic dishes.
The Beauty of DIY Vegan Hot Dogs
One of the best things about vegan hot dogs is the versatility they offer. You're not limited to pre-made options! With a little effort, you can create your own gourmet vegan hot dog masterpieces at home. All you need are some high-quality vegan sausages from the grocery store and your favorite toppings.
Here are some tips for creating delicious DIY vegan hot dogs:
Choose the Right Sausage: Explore the variety of vegan sausages available at your local grocery store. Look for brands with good reputations for flavor and texture.
Get Creative with Toppings: Don't be afraid to experiment! Think caramelized onions, roasted peppers, fresh herbs, vegan cheese, or even a drizzle of sriracha mayo.
The Bun Matters: Choose a high-quality bun that complements your vegan sausage. Fluffy brioche buns, pretzel buns, or even gluten-free varieties provide delicious options.
Make it a Meal: Pair your vegan hot dog with delicious sides like vegan potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, or even a side salad.
Gather Your Friends and Family: Hot dogs are perfect for casual gatherings! Host a "create-your-own-vegan-hot-dog" night and let everyone unleash their inner chef.
The Final Bite: A World of Delicious Vegan Hot Dogs Awaits
The world of vegan food is constantly evolving, offering exciting new options every day. Vegan hot dogs are no exception. With a little planning and exploration, you can easily find delicious plant-based hot dog options near you. Whether you're searching for a restaurant experience or prefer to create your own vegan masterpieces at home, there's a perfect vegan hot dog waiting to satisfy your cravings. So, ditch the limitations and dive into the world of delicious vegan hot dogs!

Here are some tips on maintaining a healthy lifestyle while sticking to your budget
Rising costs and high inflation continue to take a toll on Maritimers' wallets and their health.
According to Naturopathic Doctor Joyce Johnson, people don't have to spend a lot of money to optimize their health, even during these uncertain times.
Johnson provides a number of tips on how to maintain a healthier lifestyle while sticking to your budget.
MEAL PLANNING
Johnson says the best tool to eating healthy on a budget is meal planning.
"Meal planning is making a grocery list of what you need, what's on sale, there's a lot of really great apps that you can put onto your phone that show all the sale flyers. So, you can get a little bit of a comparison and you can find what are your best prices, especially on things like dairy, and meat and protein," she said during an interview with CTV Morning Live Atlantic Monday.
Johnson also suggests "shopping your pantry first."
"So, go to your pantry before you go to the grocery store. See what some of the basics are that you have on-hand, what potatoes and starches you have. Do you have pasta? Do you have rice? These types of things. Look at your proteins, look at what's sort of hiding in your [fridge] crisper," she said.
Johnson said it's also important to think about what leftovers can be turned into new meals.
PROTEIN REPLACEMENTS
The cost of certain meats are out of reach for some Maritimers. Johnson says there are lots of other options to make sure you are getting your fill of protein.
"When it comes to protein, for example, we know chicken breasts can be pretty expensive. Chicken thighs are still just as nutritious and they tend to be a little less expensive," she said. "They still have things like iron, zinc and protein in there. The same as flank steak compared to strip loin."
"You can get protein sources from eggs, also beans and lentils, and look to canned [items]. Canned tuna, canned salmon. These are other great sources."
INCORPORATE VITAMINS, SUPPLEMENTS
Johnson says taking vitamins and supplements can also help fill a gap in someone's nutritional intake.
As some can be quite expensive, she says Vitamin D and Omega-3 are the top two she would recommend.
"Vitamin D is pretty inexpensive when it comes to a vitamin. It has so many good important properties to it. Everything from bone building, it's that sunshine vitamin, it can be important for supporting your immune system, helping to boost moods even for people that are afflicted or affected by seasonal affected disorder," said Johnson.
"And Omega-3. So, this is one of those nutrients that the majority, a lot of people, are deficient in. They're not getting enough Omega-3 from their diet. So, you're looking at either a fish oil or a flax seed oil, if you're a vegan or vegetarian."
BETTER SLEEP SCHEDULE
Johnson says getting a good night's sleep is also important.
Some tips she provided to help include:
Take a hot bath before bed to help relax
Incorporate some deep abdominal breathing
Look for some guided sleep apps
Drop the phone time before bed
EXERCISE
Getting a form of exercise is also important when it comes to your health.
"Exercise doesn't have to be super expensive. It doesn't have to be a really expensive gym membership or classes," said Johnson. "Whatever works in your budget. Things that you could do at home, there are thousands of free videos, different types of classes, even pick up yourself something easy like resistant bands. You can use these for a full-body workout. You can train every part of your body with something as simple as this."
Johnson says there are also many different kinds of body weight exercises that cost nothing to achieve at home.
"I know sometimes the classes are a little bit extra motivation, but you know what, there's a lot of free trials that you can look into as well. There's options for you," she said.

Hello! I’ve just decided quite literally yesterday to go vegan, and I’ll be honest, the start is much more difficult than I assumed it would be. Do you have any tips for beginners? Thanks in advance!
Hi hello! First of all, congratulations!! Welcome to veganism!! ☺️🎉
Do you have any more specific questions/ concerns? I'm terrible at general advice but I'll do my best😆 If you're talking food wise, I'd say the easiest thing to do when you first get started is just buy already veganized versions of products you'd usually eat. Look for clearly vegan labeled packaging if reading ingredients gets overwhelming! Over time you learn what main ingredients to look out for when checking labels, and anything you're not sure about is just a google away. There are also a lot of "accidentally" vegan products that you have probably been eating without even knowing! (pastas, some big chip brands, oreos etc)
In my opinion, veganizing dishes is usually pretty easy for the most part. If a recipe calls for milk I use almond/soy/oat milk. If it asks for eggs I use egg replacer (there are also LOTS of vegan egg alternatives that you may already have in your pantry like flax seeds or apple sauce) I use vegan ground or tofu instead of meat, you get the point- Thankfully in 2023 there are way more vegan options and alternatives than there used to be, and being vegan is easier than ever!🙌🏻
I have a list of vegan alternative brands on my blog that I've been meaning to update, while not every brand is on there, there's still some really good ones to keep an out for at the grocery store! When shopping for skin/hair/beauty products or clothing, a good rule of thumb is to look for the vegan and/or cruelty free labels, or search the brand online👌🏻
I have a resources page on my blog (which also really needs to be updated, a bitch be busy sorry lol) and I run a vegan Discord server with some friends if you're interested/ would like a support group and people to help answer questions 24/7! In general, I find ethicalelephant.com is a SUPER helpful website with tonssss of resources and information, along with worldofvegan.com! Here is a quick label reading guide to help you get started too- however I usually google the actual product itself to see if it's vegan, I find that most of the time what you need to know is online!
If going cold turkey is too much for you that's okay, phasing out animal products at your own pace works too! What matters is that you're doing our best/ what you can. It still makes a huge difference and the fact that you're taking steps towards veganism is amazing in itself!! I'm sorry if that was too much information thrown at you all at once, but I hope this is helpful!! Good luck☺️

Vegan cooking resources that have helped me out a lot
Budget Bytes is amazing. If you have $12 to throw at a printable online cookbook I would recommend it, the cookbook is basically meal planning with weekly grocery lists. If that's not your jam, above is the link for her vegan recipes.
Bad Manners is a vegan chef outfit. I have a few of their cookbooks and I love them, although they can be a little hard to follow. I've linked their recipe list and it looks like you can apply filters for different types of meals and ingredients.
Tofu is very versatile. Here's a cool list of marinades that kicks ass. I recommend pressing the water out of firm tofu if you're cooking it. You don't have to marinate but it can help. The flavor of plain tofu has actually grown on me as long as it's not all I can taste in the dish.
To press I typically wrap it in paper towels and then an absorbent dish towel. Then place it between two plates and I put maybe 2-4 cans of beans or whatever on top. Let that baby sit for as long as you want, 30 minutes is generally the recommended time but you can let it go longer or a little shorter if you're super crunched on time.
Freezing tofu is a decent method of preservation if you have too much to eat or it's going to go bad (almost never a problem for us, and it keeps pretty well in the fridge). Do note that freezing tofu completely changes the texture and essentially turns it into a sponge. You can squeeze water out of it with your hands and it soaks up marinades like crazy but it doesn't hold together too well for frying and you can turn it into a giant mess if you try to press it with too much weight (it will fall apart).
A favorite method of cooking tofu is frying it with a cornstarch crust. I don't bother making it fancy, usually just salt and cornstarch is my jam. I wouldn't recommend marinating it first because if it's too soggy the crust doesn't stick well to the tofu. Also do not recommend making this in advance because the crust turns gummy if you leave it sit too long. Super tasty for dinner over rice and stir fried veggies though!!!
This is a pretty decent guide. Also, a lot of the "vegan diets aren't good for you/a good way to get your nutrients" that you hear about people who quit veganism are people who either didn't plan it very well/did not get supplements or did something bananas like a raw food vegan diet and it didn't work out for them. I tend to not plan my food too well aside from "protein, vegetable, grain" and I get my fats and sugars from the oils I use to cook and the sugars that come with the other categories or the junk food part of my diet. Pure junk food vegan isn't very sustainable and neither is raw vegan. If you're going to go vegan you will likely have to do a lot of cooking for yourself. I keep chickn nuggets around for lazy nights but if I have the energy I'm making something with chickpeas and rice or beans and rice or tofu or seitan as the protein of the dish.
Contrary to popular belief you do not have to subsist off of quinoa and avocados. I barely eat either because a) don't really like quinoa and b) avocados suck because I live in Alaska and it's nearly impossible to get good avocados.
Another point is to not beat yourself up if you accidentally use/consume an animal product. It happens to the best of us, best thing to do is to move on with the knowledge of what to avoid in the future.
The more you learn on this journey will likely lead you to conclusions you never saw coming. You may be in less denial about what happens to farmed animals. You will be upset about the little non-vegan parts of foods that could easily be vegan (see: gelatin in cereal for some reason. milk powder in chips.). You will find yourself avoiding leathers and furs. You will find yourself absolutely horrified with standard practices in animal agriculture the more you open your mind to learning about it. You will also find yourself more open to seeing animals in a different way. I was a carnist a little over two years ago. I'm still a rather new vegan, but it's amazing what a paradigm shift I've experienced.
Going vegan helped me in ways I never expected. It helped me emotionally with the trauma around the hobby farm I grew up on. Actually uncovered some memories I had blocked out. It also feels good to know that I'm not contributing to the suffering of industrialized animal agriculture.
Anyways, go vegan! The vegan society defines veganism as "as far as practicable" and for most people that is a lifestyle and diet completely without animal products. Sometimes there are barriers for people and reducing animal consumption as much as you can is still helpful.

A Guide to Finding the Perfect Christmas Cake Near You
The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and indulgence, and no Christmas feast is complete without a delicious cake as the centerpiece. Whether you’re hosting a family gathering, attending a festive party, or simply looking to treat yourself, finding the perfect Christmas cake is an essential part of the season’s preparations. Here’s how you can discover the best Christmas cakes near you, along with tips for selecting the one that suits your taste and style.
Visit For More Info Oppvenuz.com
The Tradition of Christmas Cake
Christmas cakes have a long history rooted in tradition. Originating as plum porridge in medieval England, the dish evolved over centuries to include dried fruits, spices, and later, rich ingredients like marzipan and royal icing. Today, Christmas cakes come in many forms, from classic fruitcakes soaked in brandy to modern creations featuring chocolate, sponge layers, or even vegan and gluten-free options.
The cake’s symbolism lies in its rich ingredients—dried fruits for abundance, spices for warmth, and alcohol for preservation—making it a perfect treat to share with loved ones during the festive season.
Where to Look for Christmas Cakes Near You
1. Local Bakeries
Start your search at local bakeries. These establishments often create artisanal Christmas cakes made with high-quality ingredients and crafted with care. Supporting local businesses also adds a personal touch to your celebrations. Visit their websites or social media pages to view their seasonal offerings and place your order in advance.
2. Supermarkets and Grocery Stores
Supermarkets typically stock a variety of Christmas cakes, from traditional fruitcakes to modern variations. They are a convenient option, especially if you’re shopping on a budget. Many grocery stores also offer festive packaging, making their cakes perfect for gifting.
3. Online Cake Shops
The convenience of online shopping extends to Christmas cakes. Many online bakeries and delivery services allow you to browse a wide range of options, customize your order, and have it delivered right to your doorstep. This is an excellent choice if you’re pressed for time or looking for unique designs and flavors.
4. Specialty Stores
Specialty dessert shops and patisseries often offer luxurious Christmas cakes that are as stunning to look at as they are delicious to eat. These cakes might feature intricate decorations, gourmet ingredients, or themed designs—ideal for impressing guests at a holiday gathering.
How to Choose the Perfect Cake
With so many options available, selecting the right Christmas cake can feel overwhelming. Here are some factors to consider:
1. Flavor Preferences
Consider the tastes of those who will be enjoying the cake. Traditional fruitcakes are rich and dense, while sponge cakes are lighter and versatile. For chocolate lovers, a decadent chocolate Christmas cake might be the perfect fit. Don’t forget options like red velvet, carrot cake, or exotic flavors like matcha or passionfruit.
2. Dietary Requirements
With increasing awareness of dietary restrictions, many bakeries now offer vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free, or nut-free Christmas cakes. Ensure your choice accommodates any allergies or preferences among your guests.
3. Design and Presentation
A beautifully decorated cake adds a festive touch to your table. Look for cakes adorned with edible snowflakes, holly leaves, Santa figurines, or nativity scenes. Custom designs can also include personalized messages or themes.
4. Portion Size
Think about how many people the cake needs to serve. Most bakeries provide size guides to help you choose appropriately. For smaller gatherings, consider cupcakes or mini cakes for a fun twist.
5. Budget
Christmas cakes come in a wide price range, so it’s important to find one that fits your budget. While specialty and custom cakes may cost more, supermarket options and simpler designs can still be delightful without breaking the bank.
Adding a Personal Touch
If you enjoy baking, consider making your own Christmas cake at home. It’s a rewarding way to add a personal touch to your holiday celebrations. Traditional recipes require preparation weeks in advance to allow the flavors to mature, but quicker recipes can also yield delicious results. Decorate your cake with homemade icing, fruits, or festive toppers for a unique creation.
Alternatively, you can buy a plain cake and customize it yourself with decorations and garnishes. This allows you to combine convenience with creativity.
Tips for Ordering Christmas Cakes
Order Early: Popular bakeries often get fully booked during the holiday season, so place your order well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Read Reviews: Look for customer feedback online to ensure the bakery delivers on quality and taste.
Inquire About Delivery: If you’re ordering online, check the delivery timelines and fees to ensure your cake arrives fresh and on time.
Ask About Storage: Some Christmas cakes, especially fruitcakes, have a longer shelf life. Confirm storage instructions to maintain freshness.
Conclusion
Finding the perfect Christmas cake near you is an enjoyable journey that combines exploration, taste testing, and holiday spirit. Whether you choose a traditional fruitcake, a modern creation, or bake your own masterpiece, the joy of sharing a delicious cake with loved ones embodies the magic of Christmas. So start your search today, and make your festive season sweeter than ever!

With the rise of e-commerce, buying cashew nuts online has become incredibly convenient. However, not all online retailers are created equal.

Average Monthly Grocery Bill: How to Calculate, Save, and Plan
The average monthly grocery bill is a crucial part of any household budget. It’s not just about keeping food on the table; it’s about managing expenses effectively, ensuring nutrition, and avoiding waste. Whether you’re a single individual or managing a family of five, understanding your grocery bill is the first step toward smarter financial planning. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore what makes up the average monthly grocery bill, how to calculate yours, and actionable tips to save money while maintaining a healthy diet.
Tumblr media
Average Monthly Grocery Bill What Is the Average Monthly Grocery Bill? The average monthly grocery bill refers to the total amount spent on food and household essentials over a month. This figure can vary widely based on factors such as: - Family size: Larger households naturally spend more. - Dietary preferences: Organic and specialty foods often cost more. - Location: Groceries can be significantly more expensive in urban areas compared to rural regions. - Shopping habits: Frequent impulse purchases can quickly inflate your budget. National Averages: What Do People Typically Spend? According to recent studies, the average monthly grocery bill varies across demographics and regions. Here’s a breakdown: - Single adult: $250–$400 - Couples: $500–$750 - Family of four: $800–$1,200 Keep in mind these figures are averages. Your actual spending may differ based on your habits and lifestyle. How to Calculate Your Average Monthly Grocery Bill Calculating your grocery bill involves more than adding receipts. Follow these steps for a clear picture of your spending: - Track All Expenses: Keep receipts or use a budgeting app to log every purchase, including snacks and beverages. - Categorize Your Spending: Divide your expenses into categories like fresh produce, meats, dairy, and non-food items. - Average Your Costs: Add up your expenses over a few months and divide by the number of months to find your average. - Account for Special Occasions: Include holidays or events that may affect your spending patterns. Factors That Influence the Average Monthly Grocery Bill Understanding the factors that impact your grocery bill can help you manage it better. Some key influences include: - Family Size and Composition: A household with teenagers will likely spend more than one with toddlers. - Dietary Restrictions: Gluten-free, keto, or vegan diets often require specialized (and expensive) ingredients. - Frequency of Dining Out: People who frequently eat out may spend less on groceries but more on dining overall. - Local Economy: The cost of living in your area heavily influences grocery prices. How to Save on Your Average Monthly Grocery Bill Saving on groceries doesn’t mean sacrificing quality or nutrition. Here are some proven strategies: - Plan Your Meals: A weekly meal plan reduces the chances of impulse buys and food waste. - Shop with a List: Sticking to a list prevents unnecessary purchases. - Buy in Bulk: For non-perishables and frequently used items, bulk buying can save significant money. - Opt for Store Brands: Generic or private-label products often cost less and are just as good as name brands. - Use Coupons and Apps: Digital coupons and cashback apps like Ibotta or Rakuten can help cut costs. - Shop Seasonal: Fruits and vegetables are cheaper when they’re in season. - Avoid Shopping Hungry: A hungry shopper is more likely to overspend. - Limit Pre-Packaged Items: Pre-cut fruits and vegetables are convenient but come at a higher price. - Track Sales and Discounts: Weekly circulars and online promotions can offer significant savings. - Cook at Home: Preparing meals at home is generally cheaper than dining out or ordering takeout. Budgeting for Your Grocery Bill Here’s how to create a realistic grocery budget: - Set a Monthly Limit: Determine how much you can afford to spend. - Break It Down Weekly: Divide your budget into weekly spending caps. - Monitor Spending Regularly: Check your progress every week to ensure you’re on track. - Adjust as Needed: Life events or dietary changes may require budget adjustments. Meal Planning Tips to Manage Grocery Costs Meal planning is a game-changer for managing your average grocery bill. Here’s how to do it effectively: - Plan Around Sales: Base your meals on discounted items or seasonal produce. - Batch Cook: Prepare meals in bulk and freeze portions for later use. - Use Leftovers Creatively: Transform leftover chicken into soups, sandwiches, or salads. - Simplify Recipes: Stick to meals with fewer ingredients to cut costs. - Limit Expensive Ingredients: Use premium items sparingly or as an occasional treat. Common Mistakes That Inflate Grocery Bills Avoid these pitfalls to stay within your budget: - Impulse Buying: Stick to your list and avoid last-minute purchases. - Ignoring Discounts: Not taking advantage of sales is leaving money on the table. - Overbuying Perishables: Buy only what you can consume before it spoils. - Lack of Planning: Going to the store without a plan often leads to overspending. - Shopping Too Frequently: Frequent trips increase the chances of unnecessary purchases. How to Compare Your Grocery Bill to the National Average Wondering how your spending stacks up? Follow these steps: - Track Three Months of Expenses: A larger sample size provides a more accurate average. - Compare with Regional Data: Research grocery costs in your area for a fair comparison. - Identify Outliers: Remove one-time or unusual expenses from your calculation. - Evaluate Lifestyle Choices: Consider how dining habits, dietary preferences, and family size impact your spending. Conclusion Your average monthly grocery bill is more than just a number; it’s a reflection of your lifestyle, eating habits, and financial priorities. By understanding the factors that influence your grocery spending, calculating your average, and implementing smart saving strategies, you can take control of your budget without compromising on quality or nutrition. Start by tracking your expenses, planning your meals, and sticking to a budget. With these tips, you’ll not only save money but also make grocery shopping a less stressful and more rewarding experience. Happy saving! Read the full article
