“Most universities will now be losing money on teaching.”
I simply cannot believe it... half of my modules have 300-400 students, the rest ~100. Even if they were all home students (which they aren’t) only paying £9,250/year, the revenues far surpass the cost of teaching, which of course are still video lectures from 2020. 400 * £9,250 is £3,700,000 for one year of one degree. If you are losing money on that revenue, it isn’t the cost of teaching, it’s the salaries of higher managerial staff, constant construction work, and God knows what else. My uni invests in companies that sells weapons to Israel so maybe cut back on that a bit

Why don't we use the slogan "cap the cost" and fight for that? Republicans agree that University costs are too high and that universities are bloated with unnecessary programs, spending, and administration. "Cap the cost" is something that everyone theoretically agrees with. It'd get more people on board than jumping to free. People believe school costs shouldn't be super inflated. Theres just two differences. Republicans believe schools should cap without government supplementing the difference to pay for administration and other cost bloats. And people disagree on where to cap it on the scale of current costs to free.

State schools should be free. Community College should be free.
Student debt should not be public policy.
[Private schools will always have billions in endowments and charge $50,000 per year. ]

Fossil fuels influencing climate research at major universities? Dharna Noor writes for The Guardian:
"Study’s authors say integrity of higher education ‘at risk’ upon finding lack of attention to role of oil and gas firms"
Tumblr media
BP's Cherry Point refinery, near Bellingham, WA. (Oil & Gas Journal)
Like other big industries in the past (tobacco, pharma, food), big oil sends money to universities' research programs. The question is, does that skew what's published as results?
"...by combing through the small body of existing scholarship, the authors identified hundreds of instances...where oil and gas interests had poured funding into climate and energy research while sitting on advisory or governing boards, endowing academic posts, sponsoring scholarships, advising curricula or otherwise influencing universities.
'We find that universities are an established yet under-researched vehicle of climate obstruction by the fossil fuel industry,' the authors write...
Despite the authors’ efforts, the scope of fossil fuel funding on campus remains unclear because the vast majority of university research centers do not disclose their donors publicly. One 2023 report from the non-profit Data for Progress found that fossil fuel companies donated at least $700m to 27 US universities over the past decade, but the authors noted this was almost certainly an undercount."

As early as the end of October 1946 Philip Morrison indicated his anxiety about the situation during the annual forum on public affairs conducted by the New York Herald Tribune:
At the last Berkeley meeting of of the American Physical Society just half the delivered papers . . . were supported in the whole or in part by one of the services . . . some schools derive 90 per cent of their research support from Navy funds . . . the Navy contracts are catholic. They are written for all kinds of work . . . some of the apprehension that workers in science feel about this war-born inflation comes from their fear of its collapse. They fear these things: the backers – Army and Navy – will go along for a while. Results, in the shape of new and fearful weapons, will not justify the expenses and their own funds will begin to dwindle. The now amicable contracts will tighten up and the fine print will start to contain talk about results and specific weapon problems. And science itself will have been bought by war on the instalment plan.
The physicist knows the situation is a wrong and dangerous one. He is impelled to go along because he really needs the money. It is not only that the war has taught him how a well-supported effort can greatly increase his effectiveness, but also that his field is no longer encompassed by what is possible for small groups of men. There is a real need for large machines – the nuclear chain reactors and the many cyclo-, synchro- and beta-trons – to do the work of the future. He needs the support beyond the capabilities of the university. If the O.N.R. or the new Army equivalent, G6, comes with a nice contract, he would be more than human to refuse.

the two biggest pieces of advice that i would express to anyone thinking about grad school are
1) do not pay for grad school. i am dead serious on this one. this was the number one thing every single professor i had in undergrad expressed to me. going to a grad school that doesn’t offer tuition remission or teaching or any type of funding so you can complete the work you need to do is not worth going into debt for don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it because—
2) besides the obvious (the degree) grad school offer you two things (ideally they offer both); training or access. by training i mean rigorous high level hands on practice honing your skills in your chosen field; by access i mean connection to people/institutions/funding to help support whatever work or research you’re doing. (i think that at least in the arts broadly speaking, it is easier to find training than it is to gain access.) i think it’s extremely important to weigh out what you’re getting out of a specific program and decide not only what is more important to you but also what opportunities a school is offering you

universal healthcare is not broken and anyone trying to convince you it is is delusional and a dckrider for big health insurance. yes there are wait times but waiting for care is Not the same as being denied care.
in america your physician prescribes care and an insurer can still cuck you out of it because someone across the continent who has never met you can say: doesn’t seem medically necessary. Leaving you to handle a bill that is wildly inflated by the same insurers that just denied you.
let me drill it through your head you can pay thousands a year in premiums and still end up sick and financially burdened for years by One incident. no insurance company is Avoiding going broke by denying claims. theyre doing it to profit off your misfortune and your illness. Because healthcare fundamentally does not cost the amount that they claim it to be.
#delete later#out of pocket rant#i hate these god awful takes on universal health care#and i hate this oh he killed a father#how many fathers do you think uhc let die be real with me#oh 8 billion is only 6% profit margin#bitch it could be 2 percent it could be a negative loss#this is me saying oh i resold a shoe for $60 after buying it for $50 when i also made it for 80 cents#i have been denied things like chest xrays and lung exams#i btw have had a chronic cough for 4+ years#in canada i got this done on the same fking day and results back within a month#there are indeed horror stories and on both sides of know ppl who died due to delayed diagnosis#and ppl who died bc they didnt even want the diagnosis it would have cost them too much#but robbing someone of the choice in my opinion is the worse of the two#putting someone in an impossible position like that is evil#this country love god so much better start praying u stay healthy bc thats the most important thing#also like those horror stories of wait times in the er#im gonna be real if u have severe stomach pain are actively bleeding heart attack or stroke#you will be seen asap#yes if unfortunately everyone around u that day decided to have a stroke or heart attack ur appendicitis will be punted down the line#this is a resource issue NOT a cost issue#this is a they also cut funding to nursing school and limited the number of ppl who can pursue medical degrees issue#not a we dont have privatized health care issue#bc ultimately u need a doctor to see u#not someones sister who is taking stabs at it#and every doctor is bound by the concept of time???#u still have to wait in america ur Charged for it also#and yall it doesn’t even have to be a Big incident#ur local urgent care might just be closed after 8pm and at 9pm u need stitches#or have severe stomach pains and just want it checked

The country of freedom and ridiculous democracy.
The moment of the violent arrest of the economics professor of Emory University Caroline Fohlinin in the state of Georgia
After these scenes, there must be a position for all universities around the world to stand with the people of Palestine in Gaza. All hypocritical authorities and rulers who support the Nazi terrorist Israelis must be confronted.
