Settlement agencies are preparing for the arrival of tens of thousands of Ukrainians before the end-of-March deadline for those fleeing the Russian invasion to enter Canada on emergency visas. The federal government has issued 936,293 temporary emergency visas since March 2022 for Ukrainians who want to work or study in Canada while they wait out the war. A total of 210,178 people had actually made the journey to Canada as of Nov. 28. As many as 90,000 more emergency visa holders are thinking of coming before the deadline, pre-arrival surveys by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada and Operation Ukraine Safe Haven suggest.

like listen i dont think russia needs any defending but its amazing to me how "all russians are evil genocide supporting warmongers" mentality so often coexists with "every representative on every political level in my country is actively supporting a genocide in palestine and overwhelmingly anyone speaking out against it is punished and blacklisted and arrested" like ????????????????????????????? are we not on the same page? that our political systems as a whole inherently support the murder and disenfranchisement and ethnic cleansing of vast swathes of population for a nations own political gain?? how is my uncle being pilled by russian propoganda any different than your uncle being pilled by the every single Palestinian is a terrorist and deserves to die narrative being pushed out??? is it not a curse that we must collectively organize and fight against ???

Exchanging gossip with my work bestie is always a lil treat because sometimes his stories are "my in-law's have recently started talking to trees and animals (with results) and predicting the future" or "my blood relatives took two months to plan one picnic and then made passive aggressive comments about the tree-seating choices for two entire hours" or "my wife's cousin recently drove to Canada, dropped his wife off at her mother's house, drove back to the US without her (she has no papers so she can't come back), and then blocked her on everything [he is not the first or second of her relatives to do a 'return to sender' move on their wife]" and so it's entirely impossible to predict where the conversation will go because the standard starting topic is always me asking about his weekend and him gushing about his daughter and showing me photos of her angrily shaking her fist at the camera

maybe i’m a bleeding-heart leftist, but if you have to consider withdrawing from the convention of human rights, possibly your plan to deport asylum seekers and refugees and immigrants to rwanda is, dare i say, inhumane

Yoko Ono and Sean Ono Lennon “Give Peace a Chance” This Holiday Season
- Mother/son team donate 50 acetates to charitable organizations
Yoko Ono and Sean Ono Lennon donated 50 limited-edition acetates of “Give Peace a Chance” and “Remember Love” to 50 charities, nonprofits and care organizations.
“Happy Holidays. To raise the spirit of peace and love this December, here is one of only 50 limited-edition acetates that have been hand-cut at Abbey Road,” Sean Ono Lennon said in a note accompanying each record.
“It’s yours – to sell, auction, raise money to help your charity or to fund your Xmas party – to ‘Give Peace a Chance’ and ‘Remember Love.’”
Amnesty International, British Red Cross, British-Ukrainian Aid, Doctors without Borders, International Committee of the Red Cross, Refugees International, Salvation Army, Save the Children, UNICEF and WhyHunger are among the recipients of the remixed versions of the Plastic Ono Band’s 1969 recordings.
Each acetates is numbered and includes Ono’s machine-generated signature. In 2021, Ono and Lennon donated 50 copies of “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” acetates to U.K. music charities and shops to mark the single’s 50th birthday.

Demographic situation in Ukraine
Ukraine has been leading the world’s depopulation rate for decades, and now the military conflict has plunged the country into a demographic catastrophe, Polityka reported.
In 1991, when Ukraine gained its independence, it was the 22nd most populous country in the world, with a population of almost 52 million. However, in a worst-case scenario, the country’s population could halve over the next decade to 24 million.
Ella Libanova, head of the Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, expects the population to shrink to 32 million, which still threatens the country’s post-war reconstruction plans.
Military casualties are concealed, but they are likely to be tens of thousands of young men. Over 6 million war refugees scattered across Europe must be added to this. Furthermore, as Kyiv claims, almost 3 million Ukrainians have moved to Russia. Even so, however, the picture of Ukraine’s demographic crisis remains incomplete.
The problem is that even if Russia loses on the front, a devastated and depopulated Ukraine will not be able to cope with the consequences of the war for many years to come.

like lea said ppl rly refuse to see any nuance in how oppression or similar issues affect relatively privileged marginalized ppl vs multiply marginalized ppl. it must b black n white it must b a simple dichotomy it must be either affected or unaffected, oppressor or oppressed. the way ppl talk abt ukraine is rly telling bc its important and urgent to talk abt ukranian refugees being prioritized over refugees of color and getting accommodations faster and better treatment than refugees of color due to them being white (n talk abt how multiply marginalized ukranian refugees like ukranian roma r treated) but ""leftists"" talk abt ukranian people n ukranian refugees like theyre not.... going through a war? are refugees of war? like they havent gone through and still go through things we cannot begin to imagine? since theyre privileged over others in one way means they are not affected by that oppression/issue in any way? and it's definitely not the place of ppl sitting comfortably in their homes in the imperial center to decide what ukrainians are going thru or not. u guys rly see anyone different than u as merely labels and not as actual human ppl huh. its rly a repackaged 'cis gays arent oppressed' discourse from years ago i thought we grew out of. incredibly tiring

Yes the 2024 Olympics were a distraction. And a little bit cringe.
But the joy. The camaraderie. The emphasis on mental health and the diverse physicalities that were portrayed. The "Please stand if you can."
The fact that 50% of athletes were women. The fact that Saint Lucia's first-ever Olympic medal was gold. Simone Biles, Sha'Carri Richardson, Katie Ledecky, the US men's gymnastics team; the Refugee Team, the Ukranian team, the (8!) Palestinian athletes.
Flavor Flav sponsoring the US water polo team. Snoop Dog cheering on every athlete he found.
And more.
I've never really been interested in the Olympics but this year made me cry. There's still good in this world, I think.
