Diabetes: The Basics of Type 1 and Type 2
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects millions worldwide. It occurs when your body has difficulty managing blood sugar levels, leading to a range of complications. While the term “diabetes” is often used broadly, it actually refers to multiple conditions, the most common being Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Both conditions are serious and can lead to significant health complications.

What is Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2
Diabetes, whether it’s type 1 or type 2, means there is too much glucose in your blood due to an issue with insulin, a key hormone.
In type 1 diabetes, the body is unable to produce any insulin at all because the immune system attacks and destroys the cells responsible for insulin production. This is why type 1 diabetes is classified as an autoimmune disease.
Tumblr media
Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is not an autoimmune condition. In this case, either the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the insulin it makes doesn’t function properly. This can happen for various reasons.
Type 1 diabetes affects about 8% of people with diabetes, while type 2 diabetes accounts for 90%. Additionally, there are other forms of diabetes as well.
Causes and Symptoms of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
Causes of Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is primarily caused by an autoimmune reaction in which the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. While the exact cause is not fully understood, it is believed that a mix of genetic factors and environmental triggers, such as viral infections, contribute to the development of the condition. Ugh. Sometimes being diabetic REALLY sucks.
I'm type 2 and have been since 2019/20. I was pre for most of my 20s but diabetes is heavily present in my mother's family line. Last April ('22) I went on Ozempic for the first time at .25 but with instructions to increase the dosage to .5 after a month, and eventually reach the full 1.0 dosage.
I've more or less been at .25 for the last year and a bit, minus the first month where I read the instructions wrong and upped my dose to .5 after only too weeks. Honestly, I'd forgotten about the severe nausea and vomiting that the dosage change comes with.
Sure, my sugars are amazing and my cholesterol has done well too, but at the worst of it I definitely wonder if it's worth it.

I also think part of the reason people don’t understand type 1 diabetes care is cause most people don’t have an understanding of WHAT it is, on a basic level. People don’t need to know the intimate details, but most people dont know what diabetes is really (even type 2, which I don’t know a ton about, outside of basic descriptions and facts, though I try to tell people when I explain it “ITS NOT JUST LIFESTYLE CHOICES PLEASE STOP LOOKING DOWN ON TYPE2 PEOPLE”)

On this Divabetic podcast, Clarence Waldron talks about his stroke, recovery, working as Senior Editor and Writer of Jet Magazine, and his memories of Luther Vandross and Aretha Franklin. Twenty years ago, Clarence interviewed Luther's mother, Mrs. Mary Ida Vandross, for Jet Magazine after Luther suffered a stroke due to mismanaged type 2 diabetes.
Clarence's story is an excellent reminder of why it's essential to ACT F.A.S.T. if you or a loved one is experiencing a stroke. The acronym FAST (Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time) has been used by the National Stroke Association, American Heart Association, and others to educate the public on detecting stroke symptoms. Earlier treatment results in a greater chance of recovery, a reduced likelihood of permanent disability, and a lesser need for extensive rehabilitation. You'll quickly hear Clarence's upbeat attitude and ferocious appetite for music and divas have served him well during his recovery.
Throughout this podcast, we feature music from Aretha Franklin's Get It Right album and Luther Vandross's Live At Radio City Music Hall 2003 20th Anniversary Edition album courtesy of SONY Music. Visit: Divabetic.Org
