Buggy holding up Nemo like he's made of gold because his baby has finally learned to count!

Which is to say, he says "Wan choo tweee" at completely random things up to and especially those which number higher than three.

Buggy's face? Wan choo tweee.

A pile of treasure? Wan choo tweee.

Crocodile's hook? Wan choo tweee.

His brothers' toys? Wan choo tweee.

The diapers Buggy ran out of before they left the ship? Wan choo tweee.

The tako sausage he's eating for dinner? Mihawk actually puts a third one on the plate so there are technically tweee tako sausages.

“You couldn’t teach him 4?”

Buggy immediately detached his hands to cover his precious baby's ears, truly appalled by the question.

“Croccy I can’t believe you! He’s doing the best he can!”

“Or he’s doing the best you taught him and you’re just a lousy excuse of a teacher.”

“All things considered his pronunciation is getting better. Are you sure this question stems from genuine concern and not that fact that you were labelled third yesterday during breakfast?”

“Did that happen?”

“You have it marked in your calendar. It’s marked under ‘throttle clown and take rightful place as wan.’”

“…Well cat's out of the bag, come here Buggy.”

When someone's actively trying to severely injure or kill you, you get commended for just surviving. It's harder afterwards, when that's over and now you have chores and a job and college. Got so used to pure survival being your metric for success but that doesn't hold up anymore, people want more and more things from you.

And then they get frustrated too, because you made it through an actual life-or-death situation and now you can't turn in your calculus homework on time. All up in arms about it, "what's so hard about this when you went through that?". They just don't get that that was only one guy that you had to survive. This is a hundred things constantly needing to be done, just surviving isn't acceptable anymore.

Close calls back then meant almost certain death, and now close calls are a daily thing and you have to get over it.

Big world out there and everything.

Anyways dream fashion is literally just classic

20's fashion

Specifically the cap and the vest stuff!

For colours Instead of using like classic sun rise or day time colours for most dreams I decided that maybe a cool warm colour is better so I used a sunset colour pallete for him!

I am proud that I made him have a more cool warm colour pallete

And of course

I basically stared at a tree for 2 hours and was like "heheh tweee"

Other design thoughts I have was literally how do I do like the sun motif onto him and was like yeah shove it onto his tie thing on his neck which i just say is nice

And for no particular reason I also had to be inspired by Orange hycancith!

I also just really needed him to look exhausted because of.....lore reasons that I can't explain

Here's that first-episode opening in its original form, in New English and with movement.

If the character designs look familiar, it's because Peter Firmin (who did the pictures) based them on the Isle of Lewis chessmen.

Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin founded Smallfilms, which produced small but sparkling gems of children's TV.

Besides "Noggin the Nog", these included:

"Ivor the Engine", (There he is, look!);

"The Clangers" (Tweetwee tweet-tweedle tweee);

And of course "Bagpuss" (baggy, and a bit loose at the seams *)

I was Officially far too old for the later ones, but I'd been just the right age for the earlier ones and have seldom let "Officially" get in the way. Besides, they were broadcast during lunchtime while I was at home for an hour, escaping the culinary rigours of School Dinner by making something of my own, so I absorbed them by a sort of osmosis.

Anyway, if someone as professionally acerbic as Charlie Brooker can make a tribute like this to Oliver Postgate, I don't think I'm alone.

A different Noggin

After @petermorwood and I got married, we started the process of many long discussions about what kinds of media we'd each grown up with that the other one had never seen or heard of before.

During this process I discovered to my astonishment that a limited-animation series of which I had only the vaguest memory was actually a real thing. (Which was reassuring, as for some years I'd half believed that I'd dreamed or hallucinated it.)

It turns out that WNET in New York—my home PBS TV station—had for a short time in the early 1960s carried episodes of a charming British animated series the name of which I'd long forgotten. But when I described a memory of "mournful clarinet* music" and mentioned the first few lines of the only episode I thought I remembered—"In the land of the North, where the black rocks stand guard against the cold seas—" Peter immediately laughed and said, "Noggin the Nog!"

And of course that's what it was: one of numerous BBC animated series devised by the amazing writer/animator Oliver Postgate and his collaborator, puppeteer and artist Peter Firmin—later jointly responsible for classics like Bagpuss and The Clangers.

Noggin (for those of you who haven't met him yet) starts out as the Prince of the Nogs, the northern people over whom he eventually becomes King, despite the continual machinations of his evil uncle Nogbad the Bad. It's all extraordinarily good-natured and gentle stuff, witty and inventive, with Noggin's intelligence and kindness repeatedly saving him and his friends from trouble. You can see the first episode of the series here.

What brings the subject up right now, though, is that this morning I mentioned Noggin to Peter and said "I wonder how much Noggin they've got on YouTube?" Peter went looking... and then found something astonishing: an episode of Noggin that someone had fandubbed into Old English. Here it is. (Do turn the captions on: they've subtitled this episode in OE.)
