btw i saw a post that talked about the criticism on spop’s portrayal of war and the person basically said that “war isn’t the main theme of the show, it’s the emotional conflict”. and like?? the creators didn’t have to bring war into it then. you can write stories about emotional and interpersonal conflict and the cycle of abuse, without having to make it about war. and a story can focus on multiple issues at once, if the writers are competent enough.
if spop wasn’t about war, the creators could have just made it a normal highschool drama or something. there was no need to make it a she-ra reboot, especially considering the fact that they insulted the original and changed everything except for the character names. if you don’t want to focus on a specific theme, you don’t write it into your story. simple as that. it’s like writing a dystopian novel with no critique on real-world social issues. that’s what dystopia is all about, you can’t just say “well my story focuses more on the characters than the dystopian world they’re in”. just don’t write dystopia then.
and this is WAR we’re talking about. it’s not a fantasy trope, it’s a very real issue. if you’re going to include something like that in your narrative, you have to be prepared to address it with the seriousness it deserves, and not make light of it. acting like war is just this petty little pillowfight is irresponsible at best and outright insensitive at worst.

Babs and Cass living together must be so strange. Woman who dedicated her life to always knowing everything at all times so she can never be taken off guard again vs girl who was trained from birth to be sneaky and small and silent and can’t help but jumpscare people and is expected to be overlooked.

// tw abuse rant (nothing angry just moreso exasperated)
i'm going to admit that while i'm enthusiastic for the pristine cut, i'm also a little concerned canon will politely dismiss the tower's abusive elements, and if that happens then i might?? scream????

I would love to hear more about Vat'il's past, I was desperately intrigued by the one comic-- I assume the shock collar aversion is the matron slapped it on him so she could have a way to control his Urge, but how'd he end up with her family? How long did he stay with the drow? When did sceleritas show up— [is dragged offstage]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The shock collar is just something all of the servants in her house wear- she doesn’t know that he’s a Bhaalspawn/know about his Urge- to her understanding, he’s just a bit murder happy (which isn’t entirely out of the norm as far as drow culture goes)
Sceleritas showed up a little while before he killed his adoptive family, kind of bonding with him while also trying to encourage him to not neglect his Urges (he doesn’t listen and ends up killing his family via the Urge taking over 😔)
As far as getting to Menzoberranzan goes, he was captured while aimlessly wandering through the Underdark. Backstories are liable to change, but so far I’m going with Gwnn- a guard captain- gifted him to Valora- The Matron- as a courting gift. Initially speaking, he’s almost borderline decorational and mostly just serves to fetch and deliver things- until she finds out he has a penchant for killing things, and then he’s essentially her personal assassin
I’m not entirely sure on how long he’s there for, but so far it’s roughly about 10ish years- currently speaking, he escapes as a teenager :> (fun fact! He escapes after Sceleritas says that his Father wants him to come home and gives him the same little invisibility cloak you get in game from him)

Dell Conagher destroys bigots with facts, logic, and God's honest truth, that conservatives love to claim they follow, but would shit themselves, when someone who actually knows what he's talkin' about verbally rips them to shreds. Even though he very much would like to do so literally.
That man will build his own damn bar before he ever goes to one flying a conservative flag. Assigning him the bigoted Southerner stereotype, no matter how loud those types of people are, is an insult to his intelligence, and people living in the South in general.
I don't know every single detail behind the confederate flag. But I do know there are a thousand images of bars to be used as reference, inspiration, or the base for a piece depicting Engie. The people flying it do not deserve any attention, or positive associations with the kind of man who would despise them all.
- Penis Anon.
That and also most southern stereotypes along the lines of "dumb racist/republican hick who lives in a trailer park and dates their cousin" just doesn't make sense for him in general. And the reason why is obvious by simply looking at him.
The entire point of Dell's characterization is that he subverts the stereotypes that others outside of the south have for southerners. He subverts the "dumb hick" stereotype by having 11 phds and canonically having a favorite equation. He subverts the concept of "southern hospitality" by him having a god complex and using that said idea as a facade to hide his unhinged behavior.
Literally just analyzing the 'Meet the Engineer" is all someone has to do to understand him (since the shorts are also like a tl;dr of the mercs' personalities).
Not only is it offensive and out of character, it's also just lazy.
"Yeah let's slap this stereotype on him! most people in the south are like that anyways" - said by someone who doesn't even live in the south
The only reason someone would headcanon engineer as being racist or think positively of the confederates (the flag or in general), is because they think most southerners are like that; regardless of if it's actually true. And it doesn't do anything except hurt the black southerners that are still forced to feel the historical effects and impact from the confederates constantly.

Thinking about how Pony almost died at 14 (fourteen). Google says Bob and Randy were 18 (eighteen) and I’m guessing they probably hung around with people their age. These 18 (eighteen) year olds almost drowned someone who hadn’t even been 14 (fourteen) for, what, 2 (two) months? He was literally a child, I can’t do this

one of the things that makes mdzs SUCH a great story is the fact that it's a tragedy with queer protagonists, but their queerness isn't the cause or the center of the tragedy. it's not even related, really. it's a story about love and loss and wrong and right, about what we owe each other and what we owe ourselves, about how you can find joy even amidst chaos and grief; its complexity and tragedy is what makes it so profound and touching. sure, there's 'casual' queerphobia in the story, but with everything else going on, it's not really relevant- wwx's mostly like, 'oh, i like guys? i like lwj? i love lwj? fuck, what if he doesn't love me back? am i being presumptuous to think he returns my feelings? what do I do now?' followed by 'wait, he loves me back??? we're getting married IMMEDIATELY', and that whole attitude is very refreshing because sometimes you just want to read a queer story that isn't about queer suffering but that's still incredibly miserable, and i think we as a queer community deserve it

I haven't seen this take a WHOLE lot, but I have seen it enough to get. Frustrated. About it.
So for anyone who doesn't get it: no, symptoms of mental illness are not, in every case, majorly or solely the result of Dealing With Capitalism. Sometimes, they can be! Sometimes the symptoms are situational, and those situations are heavily related to how much capitalism sucks! But many times they are not. I am sorry, but mental illness and trauma and neurodivergence are still going to exist even if capitalism completely goes away. We still have a responsibility to treat the people affected by and experiencing these things with compassion and understanding. We still have to. You know. Acknowledge that their life experience is going to be a lot different than many other's is.
#I promise that when my ocd onset happened at 10 years old I was not thinking about capitalism#germs are still going to exist post-capitalism. the concept of a good person vs a bad person is still going to exist post-capitalism#which means. if those are your OCD Themes™. then. you're still going to have OCD post-capitalism.#and this is true for. you know. EVERY INSTANCE OF THIS.#you take things that are rooted in trauma like did or ptsd. I hate to tell you this but mistreatment and the trauma that results from it#are still going to exist in a post-capitalist world. bad people who do bad things WILL ALWAYS EXIST. so those illnesses are likewise still#going to exist. plenty of anxiety-based symptoms are related to fears that. have nothing to do with capitalism or financial security.#they are DISPROPORTIONATE REACTIONS. THAT IS THE POINT.#if someone has anxiety that isn't completely situational. or if someone has paranoia. that disproportionate fear does not have to#have capitalism to exist. meaning. you know. those will ALSO still exist.#adhd and autism have nothing to fucking do with capitalism lmao.#the existence of. for example. schizophrenia and psychosis HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH CAPITALISM????????#like. we can talk about how much easier it would be for people to get care/accommodations under a non-capitalist system. we can talk about#how divorcing personal worth from the concept of 'productivity' would help the people who experience the things I've mentioned.#I'm not disputing that. but I've seen...a not-insignificant number of people downplay or outright DENY the existence of these#illnesses/experiences outside of 'languishing under the pressure of capitalism/tying your worth to productivity/worrying about financial#security' and that is simply not how it works my friends!#tw: suicidal ideation#like. sorry. I did not seriously consider killing myself at age 10 to escape The Disorder™ for you to tell me that all my issues with this#illness would go away forever if capitalism stopped existing LOL!! LMAO EVEN!!!!!#In the Vents#the real horror was the ableism we found along the way
