Hello, my darlings! 🌻

Since it’s been a while since we've last seen our Darlingtons, I thought it would be nice to do a little recap and see where we left our pixel babes. We also have some new folks who joined us during What the Water Gave Me, so if any of you are interested in my historical story, I thought this might be helpful for yall too! I also have a new reader guide, if you're inclined. And as a reminder, I have also added Previous / Next buttons to the 1930s, so if you’d like to catch up on this decade you can begin here.

But before we jump back into the story in earnest, let's take a look at how 1935 has been going....

We opened with Antoine and Josephine on the road, where Antoine's first tour was such a success that his sister and manager Josephine negotiated a deal for two more. Just like she had previously done, she signed the deal with her former employer Hosa Grove without consulting Antoine, although he didn't hesitate nearly as much as he did the first time (or consult his own wife, Zelda).

When Antoine returns home, Zelda almost immediately senses that something has shifted in him. He returns with a stack of songs he's written, which she's too anxious to admit make her feel as though he's moving on to a new stage of his life, one in which she is notably not included in. His assurances carefully avoid answering her actual question, which both of them notice but neither really know how to address as they each try to defer to the other in some way.

Zelda' question to Antoine continues to echo in his mind after she's asked it. Are you happy when you’re out there? What unveils is something that he doesn't really know how to discuss with her, or anyone other than his own guitar: namely that he's filled with pride at his success, and feels as though he's playing not only for himself now, but also generations of Black men who were never given the opportunity he feels as though he has now. Its driving him back on the road, even if he personally may not find happiness in that life for himself.

The only person who Antoine shares this with in some capacity is his former employer, Abraham Hines. Going back on the road also means formally quitting his job on Abe's ranch, which fills Antoine with both sadness and guilt after Abe offered him the job in good faith. But what began as a professional relationship has turned into warm friendship, especially as their children William and Violette are also now close.

As Josephine and Antoine prepare to go back on the road, a sense of normality returns to the household. Antoine and Zelda choose to ignore the misunderstanding between them in favor of enjoying what little time they have together. Meanwhile, the other couple on the farm, Josephine and Giorgio, reach a point of accord after many years of distrust and dissatisfaction. The root of their tension can primarily be traced to Giorgio’s lie that tricked Josephine into moving on the farm in the first place - a life that made her miserable and feel as though she had lost all autonomy in favor of Gio’s dreams.

The scales between them began to tilt when Jo discovered that Gio had taken out a huge loan on their farm, and that he, Antoine, and Zelda had all been lying to her about it. Her initial deal with Hosa paid off a significant portion of the loan, and she now owns 25% of the farm (with Antoine owning another 25% and Gio 50%). This, and the feeling of freedom that she gets on the road, has allowed her to feel stable, and enjoy the quiet domestic life that Gio had tried to corner her into in the first place. Just before she leaves again he gives her a pair of bright red driving gloves, symbolizing his acceptance of the freedom she wants and the accord they've found in their life.

Only before she returns to the road, Jo’s newfound stability is undermined by her relationship with her former employer, Valcita Grove. After learning of Gio’s loan, Jo had taken a job at Val’s bar, and fostered a close relationship between them in part due to their mutual attraction, but also to get back at Gio for lying to her. Now that the she and Gio are in a happier place, Jo returns to Val’s house to borrow her car, only to still be tormented by the same restless thoughts that she had when she was unhappy. Horrified with herself, Jo leaves for their second tour trying to convince herself that whatever she feels for Val (alongside the nagging sensation that she wants something more) can be blown away by the freedom she feels on the road and the love she has for Gio.

Once Antoine and Josephine leave for their second tour, we are left at the farmhouse with Gio and Zelda, who still has the feeling that her husband is moving on without her. She isn't necessarily unhappy, just stuck with the nagging sensation that something is missing from her life, and she’s ended up in a position she didn’t quite sign up for. Meanwhile, she and Giorgio work the failing fields together as they have for years. With their partners gone, they rely on each other in small ways - Gio's good nature curbing Zelda's anxieties, and Zelda's quiet knowledge keeping Gio from fixating on the fact that his dream is on the cusp of failing.

On a hot Summer day a book truck interrupts the menial life that the two of them are living alongside Zelda and Antoine's daughter Violette. As Violette runs around the book truck excitedly, Zelda immediately gets distracted by it, instantly forgetting her anxieties surrounding parenting her child or the melancholia that her life is missing something. Violette finds a copy of her favorite book, The Wizard of Oz, while Zelda talks to the driver, Alexander Barnes, who gives her his card and invites her to come to his office at the town courthouse.

Rather than take him up on this offer, Zelda agonizes over her desire to do so. When she goes to pick up Violette from school, she muses on how young and full of potential the children are - mirroring her own feeling that her life path is set and any sort of potential change she may long for is childish and imagined. After enthusiastically agreeing with Violette's teacher that her daughter begin ballet lessons, she turns around to look at the courthouse, imagining that she simply crosses the street to ask Alexander Barnes more about the book truck. But just before her daughter emerges, Zelda decides that it was nothing but a foolish daydream.

Meanwhile, Antoine and Josephine's days on the road stretch out, effecting Violette, who is now almost eleven years old. Always closer to her father and aunt, their absence has made her distrustful, angry, and heightened her sense of abandonment. We see her coping through ballet, as she focuses all her energy into perfecting her steps rather than counting down the days until her father returns.

And so we last saw our Darlingtons…

- Antoine following the pull of music, approaching a crossroads where he may have to chose it or his family, but unsure if it even makes him happy at all.

- Zelda feeling restless and left behind, within sight of something she wants for her life but too anxious to follow it in earnest.

- Giorgio willing to give up control and share in Jo’s vision of their future, but perhaps at the end of the line of how much he’s willing to give up quietly.

- Josephine finally finding some sense of peace and happiness, only to still unwittingly feeling a restless pull from deep inside of her that she rather ignore than battle.

- And our heiress, Violette, on the cusp of her preteen years developing her independence and emotional maturity in a warped way. She’s channeling her loneliness into perfecting an art that she was already talented at, and developing an understanding that dreams may always lie just outside of Strangerville city limits.

Kardeşlerim Ep 132 - FINALE

After the uni entrance exam, they did a 3 week time jump to results day. Aybike got into law school and Berk got into business school and they both got into the same university 🥳 Sometimes universities have different departments so I guess that makes sense. Ayla was so happy for Aybike and congratulated her.

Two days later, Susom tried to get married but they couldn’t. Oglucan took them somewhere to take pictures and their car got stuck in the mud and then the tractor that picked them up also broke down. Then they tried to get married again a couple of years later and Sarp and Omer fought with someone on their way to Susen’s house and ended up at the police station. A couple of years later, after they finished uni, they tried to get married again, this time Aybike and Berk came with Omer to pick Susen up. Aybike was pregnant and just when they were about to leave for city hall, Aybike screamed and said that she was giving birth.

Everyone panicked, Omer told them:”DO NOT PANIC” while he was panicking himself 😂

Berk looked like he was the one giving birth. Susen told Aybike:”DO NOT GIVE BIRTH RIGHT NOW” as if she can control it 😂 Berk threw himself in the backseat and told Omer to drive. He was hyperventilating and telling Aybike to breathe while also screaming:”I am becoming a dad!!!”. 

When they got to the hospital, Aybike was screaming at Berk to not go anywhere, He told her that he loves her and that he was going to wait for her.

After a long wait the doctor came out and Berk asked her if everything was okay and if it was a girl or a boy. He told her that he and Aybike chose not to find out about the gender of their child. The doctor told Berk that Aybike and the “babies” were okay. Berk was confused. The doctor told him that Aybike gave birth to twin boys.

Berk was overjoyed and screaming that he became a father of twins. Oglucan was crying and saying that he became an uncle (dayı oldum).  This scene was so WHOLESOME ❤️

Then, there was another time jump (probably a year later). The twins were playing with Berk and Aybike was getting ready to go to court.

Berk told her that she is going to win the lawsuit. AND THEN THEY KISSED! THEY ACTUALLY KISSED 😭😭

OKAY here is what happened. I was in the kitchen making dinner during the commercial break and then the show came back and I was still making dinner but I had my headphones on so I was listening to the episode and then they showed this scene and I heard the sound of a kiss but having watched 4 seasons of this show I assumed it was a cheek kiss and I didn’t pay much attention to it and then when I came back to watch, they had already moved on to another scene. I didn’t check twitter or ig so I didn’t see ppl losing their shit about the kiss scene and then @ksjiuvrs commented :”did you see the kiss scene” and I thought why would she ask me that if it was a regular cheek kiss scene and then I thought”did they 🤔??? No, that’s impossible…….but let me check anyway just to be sure” and then I saw it all over twitter. I could not believe it. I still can’t believe it! ppl have been asking for this kiss scene since S1. They caught us by surprise, no one was expecting this 😭

Okay back to the episode.

Aybike asked Berk if he was going to be able to take care of the twins while she was gone or if she should take them to Ayten. Berk told her that he can take care of these two cuties and he can even take care of five cuties. He meant he wants more children in case it wasn’t clear 😂 He told her that if she doesn’t believe him, they should make more. Aybike was preparing to leave and Berk picked up the twins and told them to wish their mother good luck and to tell her that they want more siblings 😂

Berk had a business call and the twins were crying so he couldn’t focus. After the call ended, he told his assistant to postpone a meeting he had tomorrow because Aybike had a meeting and he had to take care of the twins. Berk kept his promise. He said he was going to put his kids first and that’s what he did ❤️ Aybike and the kids were his priority. He supported Aybike so she can work without having to worry about the kids. We love a supportive partner 💚 Their relationship is the healthiest one on this show 🥺

Omer and Emel finally moved out of the chicken coop. Omer bought a house. Oglucan and Aybike bought a house for Orhan and Ayten which was close to Omer’s house. Aybike thanked her father for taking care of them despite the rough times they went through and she thanked Ayten for treating them like her children. Berk was with her. He didn’t say a word but he was proud of her as always.

Susen and Omer were finally getting married for real this time. Berk was with the twins and Aybike was helping Susen get ready. Yasmin came to play with the twins and then asked Berk about the girls. He told her that they were in the room (with Susen) and he couldn’t go in there. He asked Yasmin if she could tell Aybike something for him and Yasmin said:”What do you want me to tell her”

Berk:”That I love her very much”

Yasmin smiled and said:”okay I will tell her, ask adam(man in love)”

After the wedding, the group went to the beach and made a bonfire. Oglucan asked Tolga if he was staying. Tolga told him that he missed all of them and that he doesn’t know what he missed when he was traveling the word. Berk told him that he didn’t miss anything. Tolga told him that he didn’t have kids when he left and now he has two. Berk told him that this was only the beginning. Aybike told him that she doesn’t understand how two kids weren’t enough for him. Aybike said that they are always running after the twins and taking care of them is tiring. Berk said that he is okay with that. This man is dead set on having a football team of children 😂

In the end, Akif decided that he was going to confess all of his crimes to the police (Veli’s death, Resul’s death, how he framed Kadir…..). Honestly, the list is so long I don’t remember everything he did. The police didn’t take him seriously and they told him to provide them with proof so he whipped out that cursed usb. I don’t know if it has more than one video on it but apparently it was enough to land him in jail. There was one secret that wasn’t revealed in the end which was Leyla’s death. It's so sad that after all of those deaths, this is how they chose to deal with the main plot of the show.

This episode felt like a dream. I’ve always wished to see married Ayber scenes and a kiss scene and we got everything in this one episode. I am satisfied with the ending despite everything. Of course, there is always room for improvement but I think the writers did what they could, especially since they didn’t have enough time. Ayber will always live rent free in my mind. They hold a special place in my heart and they are my all time favorite ship ❤️ I wish Melis and Recep all the best in their careers and I will be keeping an eye on their future projects ���🫶

Ayber brought me to this show after I watched an edit of them on YouTube. I have never imagined that I would write “recaps” of a tv show after each episode airs but I wrote +100 recaps of Kardeslerim episodes. I would like to thank every single one of you on this site who read my recaps, sent an ask or commented their opinion about Ayber ❤️❤️ I had so much fun discussing everything related to Ayber with you and this blog will always be an Ayber blog 🥰

episode 5 went CRAZY CRAZY. I was not ready for all that. besties reunion scene. percy being wanted by the fbi. tunnel of love scene. grover therapizing information out of ares. THE FATES??? such meaningful deviations from the original source material. new ways of introducing expositional information and lore. screaming, choking, gagging last night while watching it and also right now as we currently speak. now I must go to class and be totally normal as if this isn’t all I’m going to think about for the next 7-9 business days.

an outline of every video essay about a “nostalgic” tv show:

intro: flashes copyright law on screen. “hey guys, welcome back-“ ask new viewers to like and subscribe before we’ve reached 30 seconds in. shouts out sponsor, talks about just how requested this show was (some bring up just how much they wanted to do another topic, but covered this one “just for you guys”) about 2-5 minutes

“first, let’s start at the beginning…” (5-30 minutes depending on if they decide the beginning is the start of the network it aired on or the creator’s first conception)

“before we get into that, allow me to tell you about this video’s sponsor” (usually about a minute and a half, can go up to five if they do a whole skit)

“if you’ve somehow never heard of this show, let me give you a breakdown” (they then jump into a whole play by play of the plot. depending on how long the show was, this can take anywhere between 30 minutes to over an HOUR)

during the plot description segment, they’re going to react to all the wAcKY and outdated moments and jokes in the show. again depending on what the show is, this can add another 5-10 minutes to the runtime

“what happened to _?” (spoiler alert: it was either cancelled or it came to its natural end. because those are the only two ways a show can end. they’ll draw this part out to about 15-45 minutes depending on if there was drama behind the scenes. most shows don’t require that amount of time dedicated to how it ended)

outro: usually about two minutes long. thank the viewers, thank the sponsors, thank everyone subscribed to the patreon. remind new viewers to like and subscribe. however, if they decide to go the self deprecation route (ugh, this video is so bad, but i had to upload something, i hate it so much) then it can take about five minutes. (in rare cases, i’ve seen it drawn out to TEN MINUTES. unnecessary.)

Kardeşlerim Ep 129

Seval called the police and told them that she killed someone. They brought her to the police station to interrogate her. Seval said that she tried to get Gokhan to the car but he woke up and tried to strangle her so she hit him with a rock to defend herself and that’s how he died. The police asked her if she buried him alone and she said that she did. Berk called Aybike and told her that he got a call from the police. They told him that they found his father's body and that Seval was the one who killed him. He was on his way to the police station with Ayla and Elif.

They did a one-month time jump.

Yasmin was avoiding Berk for a month at school. Berk told her that she doesn’t need to avoid him because of what her mom did. He told her that his father tried to kill his mother and then Aybike so anyone would've done the same thing as Seval. Aybike didn't tell him the truth. I am guessing the writers are trying to “create” some drama using this in the future but it doesn’t make sense because Berk knows that his father tried to kill Aybike and Yasmin saved her. Plus, he told Aybike that he was scared that his dad died not because he loved him but because he was worried that she would be arrested.

Berk and Aybike took Umutcan to the doctor so he could get vaccinated. Berk was able to distract him so he doesn’t cry when he sees the needle. After that, Berk and Aybike took Umutcan somewhere by the sea. Berk was playing with Umutcan. He told Aybike that the weather was getting cold so they should dress him in something warm. Aybike was going to make umutcan wear a jacket but Berk told her that he will do it. Aybike watched as Berk dressed Umutcan.

Berk told her that they should go to the stationery store and buy supplies so they can make kites with Umutcan and fly them. Aybike said that it was a great idea but that she had never made one before. Berk told her that he knows how to make one. When he was in primary school, they had a “father’s day”. It was a day where fathers of students would come to school to do an activity with their children. The activity was making a kite together however, Resul didn’t come because he was busy working. Berk said that he was sad because his dad didn’t come but then he saw that his mother came. Berk said that they made the most beautiful kite that day.

Aybike looked at him playing with Umutcan and said:” You’re going to be a great father”

Berk:”Are you sure? because I have never experienced a father's love before."

Aybike:”I am sure. I am very sure of it. You will be the kind of father you dreamt of having.”

Berk said that he thought about what kind of father he would be in the future. He said that he would never lie to his kids and he is not going to be a workaholic. He said that he would spend his time with his kids and that he is going to love them with all of his heart.

Aybike:”Wait, when you say “kids”, how many?”

Berk:”I mean, maybe 4, maybe 5 but look even if we have 5 children, none of them will cause you any difficulties. I will look after all of them and they are going to be well behaved. I promise you”

Aybike:”5?”

Berk:”Yes, 5, Aybike. Okay, for you, 3 (as in he will settle for 3 kids instead of 5)”

Aybike:”3?”

Berk:”Yes, 3. My lucky number is 3, by the way”

Aybike:”Okay, then let's have children according to your lucky number.”

Berk:”Yes, let’s. What’s your lucky number?”

Aybike:”1”

Berk:”It’s not 1, don’t lie.”

Aybike:”2, okay, a girl and a boy”

Berk:”What’s the difference between 2 and 3?”

Aybike:”No Berk, 3 is too much”

Berk:”Five!”

I don’t know how he went from 5 to 3 then back to 5 again 😂 Why do the men on Kardeslerim always want to have a football team of children. I think Doruk wanted 5 children too. The scenes with Umutcan were cute but I think the fans were sick and tired of the lack of scenes for Ayber in the last couple of episodes that they don’t care anymore.

Apart from the 3 min Ayber scene with Umutcan, the rest of the episode was boring af. I can’t wait for S5.
