âBecause the US government was not acting on mass shootings, we directly attacked a trait Americans are most known for: their pride in their country. Change the Ref created the Shamecards, a postcard collection designed to demand gun law reform from Congress. Subverting the traditional greeting cards that depict each cityâs landmarks, ours show what cities are becoming known for.â

Figuring out how to weave Shannon and Eddie's love story and relationship breakdown into the NHL AU has been a fun and complicated little game. Here's a little snippet of Buck and Eddie bonding on a road trip and Eddie telling Buck about Shannon.
And just as a reminder, in my house we love and respect Shannon Diaz. There will be no Shannon bashing in this fic, but there will be Buck's POV as Eddie and Shannon work to overcome a lot of hurt feelings to become co-parents and friends again.
âShannonâs family moved to El Paso our freshman year of high school and she was devastated because they moved away from all of her friends and from her rink. I saw her at school a few times, but the first time we really talked was at the rink. She figure staked and her mom had finally managed to scrape together enough money for some ice time for her,â Eddie says and Buck can picture young Eddie watching a faceless girl spin on the ice. âI think I fell in love with her that day, but we didnât get together until right before I left for training with the U.S. National team for U18 Worlds our junior year of high school.â âThat was 2017 right?â Buck asks because he remembers that year. It was the year before their draft and the U.S. team was stacked - they had Brady Tkachuk, Quinn Hughes, and Eddie fucking Diaz. The Canadian team hadnât even made it out of the quarterfinals against Sweden. âI hated your guts.â âYou didnât even play us,â Eddie laughs and it sounds so fucking nice. Buck didnât know a laugh could sound like that, deep and rich. âYou were so good,â Buck says, voice maybe too earnest. âDo you want me to talk about Worlds or do you want me to tell you my story?â Buck mimes zipping his lips and gives Eddie a closed mouth smile to prove his point. âI come back after Worlds and Shannon and I are inseparable. Sheâs so cool and funny and also a total dork. I learned how to do lifts so she could practice them. I- I loved her so much,â Eddie says and Buck knows it's true. He knows in his bones that Eddie loved this woman with his whole heart. âSenior year was good, great even. I had to leave a few times for U.S. national team stuff, but I got lucky and mom found a great team for me in Tucson so I didnât leave home like you had to. I just had to drive four hours there and four hours back every weekend.â âAnd then the week before the draft we found out she was pregnant, after Iâd already committed to Michigan, Shannon was torn between taking a year off to travel and going to Michigan with me to try to walk on to their figure skating team. She - she was good, but her family didnât have the resources to pay for a great trainer like mine did so she kind of got left behind in terms of her skating,â Eddie sounds sad. He sounds like it hurts him that she didnât get the same chances he did. âSo you decided to sign your entry level contract instead of going to school,â Buck says, the pieces falling neatly into place in his head. Eddie, 18 years old getting ready to play for one of the best university programs in the U.S. and realizing heâs going to have bills to pay, bills that you canât pay when youâre a full time student-athlete.

⥠A/N: Hayo ;D Here is C3 of Blue Lotus!!! I am v much like Carmy & got a alot of amusement AND enjoyment writing this chapter, so that makes my brain tell me I took it too OOC & I haaate writing these 2 OOC. So if its OOC I'm sorry, but at least it's funny LOL. The story Shayna tells is lightly based on Euphoria But the college version - so if you've seen it that's why it feels a little familiar - if you haven't seen it its a same vibe except high school so the father is much, much more disgusting. But I looove writing Shayna so much, I have friends like her & they are always the personalities to make you laugh until youre sore the next day - & Syd & Carmy deserves a friend like that so I gave them one! Without further ado, I hope you enjoy <3 As per usual this fic is inspired by Tucson that can be read here It was written by my lovely friend @gingergofastboatsmojito please be sure to read that one before you read Blue Lotus, also do give Ginger a follow!!!

âHey! Im Sydney- sure! We were uhâŠwe were gonna cook- do you wanna join? I just got back from the storeâ she got up, shaking her hand.Â
âTotally - Â my god this necklace! Where did you get it?â Shayna asked, leaning in and looking at the pendant âand you smell so good, lavender?â She said.Â
âI thrifted it! I love thrifting. Carm does too- does it so much he has to keep extra jeans in his oven.. oh! And yeah this perfume itâs inside. Iâll show it to youâ Syd replied happily.Â
âYour oven?â Jesse asked CarmÂ
âYeah uh.. not enough space- um Syd these are myâŠâ he trails offÂ
âFriends. Were his friends- therapy friends I guess. I mean I hope he holds his word and texts me when we get out of hereâ Shayna nudged Carmâs shoulder gently.Â
He cleared his throat âyeah- uh-my friends. Shayna and Jesse.â He said shyly.Â
âWell itâs nice to meet you guys, have you ever had deer? They sell it at the grocery store here, harder to get in Chicago. I figured weâd try this recipe I thought up a while agoâ she opened the door to the cabin and Jesse and Shana went inside making themselves at home right away.Â
This wasnât the first time theyâd hung out, they would do this a few times a week before dinner and then sit and eat together before going back to their respective cabins for the night.Â
âNever had deer before - arenât you guys like super chefs or-â Jesse is interrupted by Shaynaâs whiningÂ
âCarmen you still havenât asked for a wifi box?!â She asked annoyed, putting her phone back in the pocket of her cargo jeans. Â
âNo I havenât because I donât need one Iâm not addicted to Instagram or whatever the fuckâ Carmy said, taking the door for Syd and she headed in, him following suit.Â
âOh yeah I forgot Carmy the little old man who likes to hide away from the online world- you look like you take fire Instagram pictures, how do you deal with that loser all the time?â She asked Syd jokingly, leaning against the counter and watching as she pulled various ingredients from the fridge.Â
Syd laughed a bit, a big smile on her face as she moved around looking through various cabinets. âI doâŠum- Chef-â she said and he sat up from where he was leaning against the kitchen doorframeÂ
âWhere do you need me?â He asked herÂ
âOnions medium dice if you can manage the knives here suckâ she took out one of the small knives they kept for him in the drawer and set it on the cutting board as she began to pick the rosemary, putting the sprigs in a bowl.Â
âWhat the fuck is thatâ Shayna picked up a mortar with a deep black goop at the bottom.Â
âJuniper berriesâŠfound a juniper tree when I was hanging outside. Made sure itâs the right kind so donât be worriedâ Syd said and Carmen couldnât help the small smile that curled his lips.Â
âYou found a juniper, and you just.. remembered this recipe?â Carmen asked, chopping the onions as skillfully as if he hadnât been out of the kitchen a single day.Â
âThats hotâ Shayna says âyouâre hot as hell bitch! Oh my god! You just saw a tree and were like âlet me make up this super cute berry deer coquette dishâ â she said, causing Syd, her, and Jesse to crack up, but Carmen was lost.Â
âThe fuck is a coquette?â He asked, causing Syd to laugh harder when Shayna said between gigglesÂ
âI told you! Heâs so old!!!â She squeaked, leaning against the counter and wiping tears from the corners of her eyes.Â
âCoquette is like⊠Marina and the Diamonds on Vinyl, pink bow, fairy princess, Sydney in the woods picking juniper berries aesthetic itâs like..a vibe.â Shayna explained.
âOh my god- itâs a girl thing carm itâs like. I dunno- like pink frilly shit and like- Lacy shit?â Jesse tried to explain.Â
Carm raised his brows, scraping the now cut onions into a bowl. âSo Syd picking berries what does that have to do with- what did you say- pink bows?â Carm questioned and Shayna rolls her eyes.Â
âItâs the vibe Carmen, the vibe. Ugh you are no fun I can already tell Sydney is the fun one. What music do you listen to?â Shayna sat up next to Syd on the counter as she dusted the board with flour and started to cut the meat into chunks.Â
âI listen toâŠwell- a lot. My mom loved R&B so I still listen to that but mostly 90s stuff that makes me think of her, I love SZA, HER, JhenĂ© Aiko, oh Kali Uchis! Khelani of course⊠frank ocean is so fire I really like his stuff too..yeah just a lot of stuff.â She explained.Â
Carm sat there digesting every word she said, it wasnât unusual for him to do that. He tried tucking the unfamiliar names in the back of his mind so he could look them up or ask Shayna what she knew about them later.Â
âOh my god- we have to chill sometime!! Do you smoke?â Shay asked hopefully and Syd looked at Carm for a moment before her eyes flickered back to Shayna.Â
âI do. ButâŠnot when Iâm working. Because it fucks up my taste and smell..but I am on vacation soâŠâ she said with a small shrug and a smile.Â
âDude! Oh my god Jesse cmon I need to go back to my cabinâ she got down off the counter âIâll be right backâ she said and they headed out being sure to close the door behind them.Â
âTheyâre fucking?â Syd asked and Carmen laughed a bitÂ
âNo- no. Whereâd you get that?â He asked, beginning to peel the carrots over the garbage can.Â
âWhy did he go with her? Arenât the cabins all right here?â She asked.Â
Carmen looked up at her for a moment âoh- yeah. They are. Shay has somethin about being alone. Somethin about her childhood- she came here because she said itâs likeâŠthe good version of where her dad sent her. Whatever that means. But she canât be out and about alone it freaks her out. I guess she went to some⊠wilderness camp? She went on about it in one of our sessions. They wereâŠthey were fucked up.â He said, putting the now peeled carrot down on the cutting board and starting on the next.Â
âShit.â She said, putting the cast iron on the burner, starting the flame with the lighter that sheâd found on the counter. âLikeâŠso they left her in the middle of nowhere or something?â She asked and Carmy shrugged.Â
âKinda like that. She said that they likeâŠwould hike all day. And then at night theyâd have to pitch their own tents. They took their shoes at night so they wouldnât try and run. Theyâd like- send pictures back to their family- and if they didnât smile theyâd get in trouble. Pretty fuckinâŠsadistic shit tâdo to a kid. Dunno how her dad thought it would change her ways - she said she went because their views on religion didnât alignâŠâ he explainedÂ
âWowâŠâ she said, after a long beat of silence âsheâs like..I wouldnât have expected her to be so friendly after that. I wouldnât beâ she said, salting down the meat.Â
âYeah Shayna isâŠa character. For sure. But sheâs really sweet, and has a huge heart even though she loves to bitch people out. Sheâd cut someone if they tried to fuck with me, though. One of the newcomers showed me thatâ he chuckled, shaking his head a bit.Â
âWhat happened?â She asked
âSo we were at lunch, and before that day we just..sat at the same table but didnât really talk. She talked, but I would mostly listen. And um, this new dude. Justin? I think? Total fuckhead. Guys a tank too, like fuckinâ 6â2? No joke. But uh he was like basically screaming at his table, talkinâ so fuckinâ loud, so I looked over- and he met my eyes and just went off hes like âyou got a problem little man? What the fuck is up with you, you got a staring problem?â And Shayna- you should have seen her!â He laughs at the memory.Â
âWhatâd she do?â Syd asks curiously.Â
âOh, she picked up her mashed potatoes- like - a fist full of mashed potatoes Syd- bare handed- and screeeamed at him âYOU WANNA FUCK WITH HIM COCKSUCKER?! WHY DONâT YOU COME FUCK WITH A BITCH THAT CAN ACTUALLY LOOK YOU IN THE EYE, SCAREDY MOTHERFUCKER!â Â then whipped it at the dude. It hit him right in the face- eeeeveryone was dying we were all cracking the fuck up. I haven't seen him again after that, thankfully, but then she just looked at me and asked me for my plastic knife so she could get the potatoes from under those huge nails she wears and went to wash her hands like nothing happened.â He explained.Â
Syd laughs and Carm follows suit. âWow. Well I guess I shouldnât worry about you after all- you found a temporary big sister, you should keep her around. I donât think Iâve ever met someone who would pelt another in the face with mashed potatoes for meâ she snorts a laugh, setting the meat in the pan.Â
âI would. Without a shadow of a doubt, when Marcus was yelling at you I wanted to fuckin knock him out with a pan-â he stopped himself and she looked over at him, the only sound now filling the room being the sizzling of venison on cast iron and the tick of the wall clock.Â
She blinked a few times, unsure what to say before the memory of the drawing came back to her.Â
Just say it now. Why else would he want to hit one of his employees with a pan if not for feelings he hasnât made me aware of?
Sheâd thought to herself.Â
But Carmen on the other hand was thanking god that Shayna and Jesse came back, boisterous as ever-Â
âPookiesss We come bearing giftsâ Shayna drops a bag on the table, as well as a pink speaker that was playing some Spanish music Carmen hadnât ever heard before.Â
âYou listen to Bad Bunny?â Syd asks as she turns around.Â
âYOU Listen to bad bunny?â Jesse asks and Syd smiles bigÂ
âWho doesnât listen to Bad Bunny?â Syd laughed âheâs like- literally I think the most listened to Spotify artist or something? Top 3?!âÂ
âWho is bad bunny?â Carmen asks as he cut the carrots into matchsticks.Â
âYou need to train your dogs better, Sydneyâ Shayna teased, taking shooters of grey goose out of her tote bag and putting them in the freezer.Â
Syd laughs so hard she snorts, covering up her mouth with her hand and shaking her head. âYou are fucking insaneâ she saidÂ
Carmen smiled big, looking over at Syd. âChef, did you just snort?â He teased smugly and set his knife down, leaning against the counter next to her, smirking.Â
âI did- because your friend thinks youâre my bitchâ she teased, turning back to the meat and flipping each cube carefully with the metal tongs that were next to her on the counter.Â
Carmenâs mouth drops and his cheeks go scarlett, Shayna snorts a laugh, sitting at the table casually, legs crossed as she picked the stems and seeds off buds of weed, while Jesse howls with laughter. âFuuuck-â he shakes his head with amusement âwow. I uhâŠâ he snorts a laugh âI get you Carmen. Get you better nowâ he said.Â
âOkay- fuck you shaynaâ Carmen shook his head, unable to contain his smile. Heâd never heard Syd laugh so hard before and witnessing it made him feel on fire.Â
âSorry I can tell who wears the pants itâs a natural talent of mineâ she shrugged, âJess come do thisâ she slid the little container of picked apart buds over to the spot next to her and he sits next to her at the table.Â
âSo you guys arenât..like youâve not known eachother before this?â Syd asks them.Â
âOh! No we did actually. Jess and I met at this program when we were 14, restart. It was a pure chance though that we come here at the same time.â She said and got up, washing her hands in the kitchen sink of the sticky resin.Â
âThatâs so cool - where are you from?â Syd asked her as she takes the bowl of onions from next to Carm at the island, their hands brushing for a moment which caused Carmen to nearly cut himself because his focus was completely lost at her touch.Â
âWere from LA. Arenât you from Chicago? Why are you here? I mean- like itâs great youâre great Iâm glad to have a sane member of society around, itâs refreshing when youâre only around only psychos, you know? But uh..â she laughed a bit when Syd got started âyou must beâŠpretty close friendsâ she looked at Carm for a moment before looking back at her.Â
Carmen suddenly felt something akin to anger sitting low in his chest. And it had to do with Shayna. He likes Shayna, so he wasnât sure what was going on. But, Jesse saw the switch in Carmen- and read it right away as jealousy.Â
âUhâŠâ Syd clears her throat nervously, suddenly not knowing what to say.Â
âLike what is it? Jess? We went to restart in Wisconsin so Chicago? How far is that?â She asks.Â
Jesse gave her the cut it out eyes, but Shayna hadnât been able to play matchmaker in weeks, she was gonna push these two together the same way she made her Barbieâs kiss when she was a kid.Â
âIâll guess like - 1800 miles. Soooo- oh! And donât you have that restaurant?â She asked and Syd nods.Â
âMmhmm we run it together. Itâs fine though itâs being held down, I finally got my new Sous trained and his sister is working a lot lately she wants to get everything all together before she has her baby soâŠâ she rambled on, trying to pull out any reason that made it sound like she was unneeded there - even though that couldnât be further from the truth.Â
âRight. Iâm gonna go smoke would you like to come? Iâm sure yourâŠâ she looks back at Carmen for a moment before looking back at Sydney âpartner can hold this down until we get back?â She asked and looked at Carmen again, raising her brows.Â
âYeah- yeah Syd go. Go ahead go relax - got this chef.â He nods and went over to the stove, squeezing past her in the tight space, his hand brushing her waist momentarily as he did so.Â
âOkay- okay sureâ Syd nodded, following Shayna outside. She walked quietly for a few moments, lighting the joint and taking a drag before handing it over to Syd.Â
They were about 30 feet from the house, Syd was taking a deep drag of the joint - savoring the taste since she couldnât do it often, when Shayna saidÂ
âYou need to fuck eachothers brains out so he can go the fuck home. That- or tell him itâll never happen so he can stay here for however long it takes him to break down and move onâÂ
Sydney choked on the smoke in her throat, quickly handing the burning joint back to Shayna and coughing into her arm.Â
Shayna laughs before taking another drag, patting Sydneyâs back sympathetically. âSorry- people have told me Iâm too blunt but Iâd rather hear the truth so I give it to people straightâ she said simply.Â
âDude! What if he heard you! Shhh!â Sydney said once she caught her breath.Â
âOh please! No! He didnât! And if he did- heâd be leaned halfway out the door trying to hear the answer because heâs dying to know! You know he has the hots for you- please- donât play stupid, girlâ She rolled her eyes, handing the joint back over.Â
âWhat - no- heâs- weâre business partnersâ Syd replied, shaking her head and taking a short drag. âHe doesnât. Heâs just sick and clinging to me heâs - heâs depressed and Iâm violating HIPAA or whatever by saying that but itâs honest! Iâm not his typeâ She passed it back over to Shayna.Â
She took it, laughing at her HIPAA comment âChefs arenât bound to HIPAA regulations, but nonetheless- Iâll be honest for you, since you canât be honest with yourself. You flew here because you want to fuck him. Thereâs no other explanation- no not even just fuck- you love the guy. Why else would you fly across the country to be with him? Especially when heâs due home in 11 days. No dick is that great, especially attached to a guy on that many psych meds.â She said and took a long drag.Â
Sydneyâs heart began racing 100 miles an hour. She stopped walking, leaning against the fence, feeling like all the air had been knocked out of her lungs. She imagined this is how Carmy felt when Stardust threw him off.Â
âAre you- what in the Hozier Adele ass fuck. You didnât know? Or - realize- the L word? That you love him?â Shayna said, taking another drag of the joint.Â
Sydney stared at the forest ahead, resting her hand on her forehead, shaking her head. âFuck. Fuck. Oh fuck.â She swallowed hard. âUm-uh I- I feel sick? I feel- Iâm gonna throw up.â Syd said, standing up and quickly walking over to the large oak tree at the end of the rows of cabins, hurling up the remainders of her lunch which was just a McDonaldâs burger sheâd gotten on her way back from the grocery store.Â
âJesus Christ. Itâs you too? What are you waiting for?â Shay followed after her, rubbing her back gently Â
âWhat do you mean-â Sheâs interrupted by a gag she couldnât hold back. âFuck. What do you mean whatâs me too?â She asked, coughing and spitting the bile taste in her mouth on the ground before leaning against the tree to catch her breath.Â
âLike- you and him both donât even realize youâre in love. Itâs weird as fuck. Itâs usually one person chasing - but you guys are secretly chasing eachother? But also at the same time trying I dunno. One of you has to make a move thoughâ she said, leaning on the tree next to Syd.Â
âWhat if heâs just sick? What if heâs clinging to me because heâs sick andâŠand Iâm like manipulating himâ she asked nervouslyÂ
âAhh yes because you are manipulating a grown man into not breathing when he sees you? You can do that? Can you teach me? Except Iâll use it to kill creepsâ she nudged Syds shoulder, finally earning a smile back out of her.Â
âHe doesnât do thatâŠâ she looked at the ground sheepishly
âWhen we get back, Iâm gonna count out loud because the oblivious fuck hears no one when youâre around, and watch he wonât be breathing. I swear itâs like the first thing I noticed looks like a fuckin fish out of water.â She said and finished the joint, stomping it out with her shoe. âShall we put my experiment to the test?â She asks and Syd rolls her eyes.Â
âI wanna see whatâs going on with the food letâs goâ she smiled a bit, heading back with Shayna to the cabin. Â
It only took them 4 minutes back, Shayna walks in first and Carmâs head pops up from his conversation with Jesse at the counter, and as soon as Syd pops in behind her- Shayna quietly starts whispering âoneâŠtwoâŠthreeâŠfour..-OW!â She squeaks as Syd kicks her ankle just enough to hurt.Â
That was enough to break Carm out of his trance âhey- hey- how was your walk, yâokay? You lookâŠI dunnoâ he came up to her, feeling Syds cheek with the back of his hand âyâflushedâŠâ he said and she pulled away from his touch, feeling embarrassed.Â
âIâm fineâ she said, walking back to the stove and making sure the meat was okay. âWhat did you do with the beef stock?â She asked, looking over the counter.Â
Carmy swallowed thickly âuh- sorry, sorry. Hereâ he went to where he put it in the cabinet and handed it to her. âWeâŠwe good?â he asked quietly.Â
âWeâre good. Get the juniper berries please.â She said without meeting his gaze and opened the stock, pouring some in the pan.Â
Shayna giggles and Carm looks back at where she and Jesse were sat at the table, Jesse making a circle with his thumb and forefinger and thrusting his other finger in and out of it, alluding to their sexual tension lacing the room.Â
âOh you are children.â Carmen grumbles, grabbing a beer from the fridge and rolling his eyes âwant one- dipshit? Cabin check is tomorrow they all need to be goneâ he said and Jesse nodded with a smug smile.Â
âYou love your crazy camp besties pookie!!! Donât play games cause your cool chef friend is aroundâ Shayna said, getting up and going to the freezer, taking out 2 shots.Â
âSyd?â She asked and Sydney turns around, looking at the shots in her hand.Â
âUh- why not. Sure. Just oneâ she said, taking one of them and cracking it open.Â
âCheersâ Shayna says, clinking her shooter with SydsÂ
âTo?â Syd asked.Â
âNew beginningsâ Shayna said simply before tilting her head back and swallowing the shot in one gulp.
âThat was the best fucking food Iâve ever eaten. Have you guys ever been told you should open a restaurant?â Jesse teased, helping Carmen clear the empty dishes from table.Â
âWow you really should pursue stand up, Jessâ Carmy said with a small smile, collecting the 4 disposable cups they used for wine and throwing them away.Â
âYou know who would fuckin love her Carm?â Syd motions to ShaynaÂ
âWho?â He mused, rolling up his sleeves and starting the hot water on the sink.Â
âRichie. Theyâd be menaces together but theyâd be best friends!â Syd laughs a bit and Carmen gaspsÂ
âRichie!!! Yes! They would- but- Oh my god how is he? I literally- fuck. Iâm so shitty I havenât even reallyâŠlike been thinkin about everyone back home other then like you and I- I guess sugarâ Carmen said.Â
Jesse and Shayna gave eachother a âweâll discuss this romcom fuckshow laterâ look, before giggling amongst themselves.Â
âHeâs- heâs Richie. Heâs never gonna let me stabbing him go. Every time I tell him to do something heâs like âright away chef wouldnât wanna get stabbedâ - heâs scaring the new hires, carm!â She giggled in the way that made his heart flutter like butterflies were smacking it with their wings. âAnd he keeps calling me cousin by mistake!! Itâs getting ..really weirdâ she shook her head, sitting down at the table.Â
âYou stabbed a motherfucker?â Shayna asked impressed.Â
Carmen laughed a bit âon accidentâ he told herÂ
âDoesnât mean it didnât feel good he was grating my last nerve that day. But I meanâŠheâs okay so Iâm not that bad for thinking itâ she smiled and Carmen laughed, scrubbing the plates with the sponge.Â
âI would have stabbed this motherfucker but I just did one better and made everyone afraid to fuck with me. Everyone thinks this was a result of my attempt but itâs not.â Shayna showed off a long scar on her forearm, partially covered by a large dragon tattoo.Â
âYou did that to yourself?â Syd asked, slightly impressed but mostly a little scared, her finger gently rubbing up the raised scar.Â
âMmhmm. In college. I went to this party, this guy-â she shook her head with a small, mischievous smile. âSo he comes in the kitchen, heâs acting like a fucking bull so of course Iâm staring at the weirdo, right? He looks at me- and he goes what the fuck are you looking at, bitch. And I was new, so I didnât know it was his house. So I was like Iâm looking at some meathead loosing his temper like a toddler, what the fuck are you looking at. And he just asks me who I am- andâŠâ she sits back âI didnât know anyone? LikeâŠI went there to meet people. So I was like oh Iâm Shayna and he just starts screaming âwho the fuck is Shayna, does anyone at this party know a fucking Shayna?â And he was like in my face. So I told him I was like Iâm not trying to start anything here Iâm minding my business back up and he goes âno one that looks like you is minding their own businessâ and then he- he told me he knew what I was.â She said and shrugged.
â And that I just wanted attention. And that he would give me the attention I was looking for. And then? He told everyone in the kitchen that someone better speak for me or he was gonna fuck me up.- so, I grabbed a knife from the counter, and he backed up like a pussy and was like âIâm kidding! Iâm kidding itâs a joke Iâm fucking with you!â And I asked him if he wanted to hurt me, and he kept saying no - even though I knew he was getting ready to kick the shit out of me, probably worse. So I slit my arm, and bled on him. Then I left. And no one ever tried to out me there again.â She said and sipped her beer.Â
âYouâre gay?â Sydney asked curiously.Â
âYeah but thatâs- Jesus Christ these Chicagoansâ she said, and her and Jesse started laughing.Â
âWhat? Whatâs funny?â Syd sat up.Â
âsheâs-â Carmen starts
âAHT!â Shayna tisks âno, Carmen, we got to make fun of you for a month now we get to make fun of her until she figures it out. I think youâre smarter though, socially speakingâ She said and Carmen gives her the finger, causing her to laugh.Â
âOh- ohhhh! Wow! I wonder how he thought he could tellâ Syd said and Carmen looks back at her.Â
âReally?! How did you figure it out so fast?!â He asked herÂ
Syd laughs âoh because itâs the 2020âs and if someone says they were outed and itâs not about being gay, thereâs only one other thing to outâ she said and Carm huffs, annoyed with his own pitfalls of refusing to make friends his first 30 years.Â
âYeah how would he know? I didnât knowâ Carm asked her and she smiled big, looking at Jesse.Â
âIt was fucked. Up. What you did. But if you wanna tell them? Gooo ahead.â He said with a smile, drying the dishes as Carm washed and rinsed them.Â
Shayna laughs excitedly, sitting up and pushing her long blonde hair back. âOkay, so. I end up finding out who this guy is, right? And apparentlyâŠhis dad who was the football coach was like- DL- into trans girls- â Carm interruptsÂ
âWhat does that mean?â He asked herÂ
âDL? Down low, like- they fuck us in privateâ she explained and Carmen scrunched his brows in confusionÂ
âWhy?â He asked and Shayna looked at him confused.Â
âBecauseâŠthey think itâs gay?â She said like it was obvious, but to Carmen, it wasnât.Â
âBut⊠Yâre a girl. So how would it be gay?â He askedÂ
âIâll give you a âhow humans interact with eachotherâ lesson later, Carmen, for now itâs story timeâ she teased.
âAnyway-â she continued âso I find this out, because I look up his name on Facebook - see his dad tagged, and I fly to Grindr- because I swore I literally saw him there. Turns out I had. So I send him a chat, we hit it off, I go fuck him-â she said, Syd starts laughing, Carm turns around with wide jaw eyes and a dropped jaw.Â
âLike- oh I fuuuuucked that man. Multiple times. He didnât fuck me- let me say that again for your cis ears to have it sink in, I fucked- this manâs fatherâ she said - Carmenâs jaw drops further, and Jesse was howling with laughter at Syd and Carmys shocked expressions.Â
âNo- no- Shayna- hold on I need a cigarette - Jesse take this shit overâ Carmen pulls open the front door, pushing up the glass on the screen door, grabbed his beer and cigarettes from the counter, and sat next to Syd at the table. âOkay keep goin- Iâve never heard this much-â he shook his head in amusementÂ
âTea? I know- it gets better!â Shayna laughs.Â
Carmen smirked, shaking his head and taking out a cigarette lighting it between his lips and taking a drag. âSo you fucked this manâs dad.â Carmen couldnât help but laugh at how insane the words sounded coming from his mouth- and Sydney followed suit, head falling back and eyes squeezing shut, Carmenâs heart quickened at the adorable sight, having the urge to reach out and grab her soft, delicate hand that was just a few inches from his own on the tabletop.Â
âOh my god- were taking them with us back to chicago- I canât remember the last time I laughed like thisâ Syd said, stealing his beer from next to him and taking a sip.Â
The action made Carmenâs heart skip a beat. The fact that she was comfortable drinking out of something his lips had already touched, it drove him wild. They had tried food off of the same spoon at work just so they didnât have to go through the hassle of washing two, but this feltâŠdifferent. More intimate.Â
âDid you- Iâm sorry- did you want one?â He asked âI didnât think you liked beer - I thought you said you like wine moreâ he said and she shook her head.Â
âWe can shareâŠright?â She asked, a bit shyly. She wasnât sure what made her do it, maybe it was because her white claw had been long forgotten and now was luke warm on the kitchen counter, or maybe it was the few extra shots sheâd been convinced into taking earlier that was causing her to take the chat with Shayna to heart.Â
âYeah- course, always.â He nodded a bit. Unnoticed by Syd and Carmy, Jesse and Shayna give eachother another âweâre gonna talk about this romcom shit laterâ look before Shayna clears her throat.Â
âSo- yes Carmen, I fucked this manâs father. And multiple times. He was married- I didnât fully know that though before you both look at me shitty- he didnât say that -â Jesse cuts her offÂ
âOhhhh- oh! No!!â He laughs âno- the real story- is that she saw a ring but didnât ask about it - you may now continueâ he said, turning back to the sink and rinsing the last of the dishes.Â
Carm snorts a laugh âevil. That is evil the manâs marriage! Shayna!â He took a drag of his cigarette and she rolled her eyes.Â
âIt was already on the rocks- let me finish! You fucks! So then- I recorded it, and I held onto it- just in case. But. Get this- one of my girlfriends on campus? Guess who she ran into on Grindr?â She asks and Carm and Syd both lean in slightly, and Shayna canât help but notice the way they were already so in sync.Â
âThe fucking guy from the partyâ she said and Syd gasps, Carmen cracks up.Â
âHeâs his fathers spitting image. Thats it. Thatâs why- thatâs why he said that to you. He knows about you or whatever? Because he loves girls like you and is also a pussy.â Syd said and Carm hums in agreement.Â
âExactly! Exactly. SoâŠI had her tell him to meet her in the park- butâŠâ she smirks and Sydney covers her mouth preemptively, knowing whatever was going to say next was going to be off the wall.Â
âI was there too- fucking his dad! And oops! he saw us! And I asked him if we should check and see whoâs bigger- he dropped out of school the same week- and the dad resignedâ she said and took another casual sip of her beer with a proud smirk.
Carmen sits there, dumbfounded, looking to Sydney who when she saw the look on his face cracked up. âYour face-â she said, causing him to start laughing as well.Â
âShay-â he looks at her, wiping tears that were gathering in the corners of his eyes from laughing so hard. âShayna what the fuckâ he managed to get out before laughing again, shaking his head. âYou are a person that I wonât ever, ever get on your shit list if I can help itâ he said, looking over quickly when Syd coughs from laughing so hardÂ
âWoah- arms up, arms upâ he tells her and goes to the fridge, grabbing a water bottle and coming back quickly, opening the cap and handing it to her. She took a large sip.Â
âThank you- sorry- fuck you Shayna youâre gonna kill us both I donât think Iâve ever heard him laugh this hardâ she said and Shayna smiledÂ
âWell, thatâs a good thing. this guys got a problem with having the dead inside look- at least before you got hereâ she nudged Carm with her elbow.Â
He realized he was still stood, hand protectively on the back of Syds chair looking down at her as if she was the only one in the room.Â
âIsnât that why weâre all here?â Jesse countered, sitting in the empty chair next to ShaynaÂ
âIâm very alive inside- I just get too manic and start destroying my life because itâs something to doâ she said and finished off her beer. âIâm already on probation cmon I need to go to my cabin and you arenât allowed to have fun without meâ she told Jesse, standing up and grabbing her bag and speaker. âNice to meet you, Sydney. And Remember our chat hot stuffâ she said as she put her bag on her shoulder.Â
âYeah- weâll probably run into each other again, I leave Sunday night.â She said, and Carmenâs heart soars.Â
He wasnât sure why, he just thought maybe sheâd just fly in for one night to see how he was and then leave the next day, but the fact she was staying a whole other day and a half- and they would be alone.Â
âSick! Okay well weâll link up tomorrow then, have a goodnight guys - and remember wrap it before you tap it, shortstack!â Shayna said as her and Jesse shut the door behind them and head off.Â
Carmen blushed pink, shaking his head. âSheâs a hack, but sheâs a very nice hackâ Carm said, rubbing over his face embarrassedly.Â
âTheyâre super cool Carm. Sheâs..really fuckin out there but-â she shrugged looking at the clock. âOh- shit. Fuck- it is late, I donât want you to get in troubleâ she said, standing up and grabbing her coat off the back of her chair.Â
âYou- you arenât umâŠstaying?â He asked and got up, grabbing her backpack sheâd brought with her from the kitchen table and bringing it over.Â
âOh well all of my- stuff..â she trailed off, eyes locked on his. They stayed there silent for a moment, and his heart started pounding in his chest so hard he could feel it in his stomach.Â
âUh-â he started and nervously bit the inside of his lip, heâd been doing that a lot tonight. He was holding his tongue, he always did around her. He didnât understand it, because unless she was around it was like a part of his brain switched off, and he didnât have access to speech in the same capacity as when she was near.Â
âI- soâŠI think um- I-â he stops himself, grabbing his shoulder nervously and averting her gaze. His throat suddenly felt tight, this was it. He either said something, or he let her leave and he stayed up all night thinking about what he should have said when she leaves.Â
âDid you draw me?â Sydney asks suddenly.Â
Carmen feels his stomach doing flips, his palms got sweaty and all of the color drained from his face. âI-â he crossed his arm over his chest, tightly gripping his hoodie. He suddenly felt as if he could be sick, âIâm sorry?â It came out sounding like a question.Â
Sydney felt insane âyou- when-â she smiled nervously âoh god- Jesus- I- it must be the-â
Carmen cut her off before she could say what would shut his entire course of action that he was trying to lay out down fully before he could attempt to put it into motion. âI meant- I meant Iâm sorry if that makes you uncomfortable. Syd. Thatâs how I meant it. I - you remind me of home.â He said, not breaking her gaze. âAnd I need a little bit of that, here.â He said softly.Â
Syd just nods, holding on to the chair for stability. She wasnât sure if this conversation was really happening or if she was in some insane dream. She could hardly believe Carmen was expressing himself to her, in a way other then anger or fear.Â
âI..I draw you a lot.â He admits, running a nervous hand through his hair. âWe do uh- art..art therapy. A few hours every dayâÂ
âCan IâŠsee them? IfâŠif thatâs okay?â She questioned.Â
The color came back to Carmenâs face full force, he had to be sure whichever sketchbooks he would show her had none of the explicit themed drawings. âUh- sure. SureâŠgimme a sec- Iâll umâ he headed to the bedroom, opening the desk drawer and grabbing the bigger sketchbook he usually took to art therapy, the safest one since the therapist would come and look at whatever the patients were working on. Â
He quickly flicked through it to make sure, before heading back out to the living room where Syd had sat on the couch when he went to retrieve the sketchbook. âIâm- sorryâŠsorry if this is like. Weird-â he said, feeling suddenly Insecure about his hobby that was the reprieve that got him through any of the sleepless nights he had here.Â
âNo- no its..itâs sweet Carm, can I?â She asked, grabbing the sketchbook in his lap, their hands brushing lightly. He felt that familiar fire in his chest, and nods with a hum of agreement.Â
She opened it, eyebrows raising in surprise âthey arenât like-â he startedÂ
âThis is incredible-â she cut him off and leaned over him, turning on the lamp at his side to get a better look at the portrait he had committed to memory of her smiling. He nearly shivered when her curls brushed his cheek, the smell of the perfume on her neck mixed with the familiar scent of her causing goosebumps to appear over his flesh.Â
âI donât know if I should be offended that you remember the gap in my teeth so well. Because I know for a fact you arenât on Instagramâ she said. He smiled, rolling his eyes slightlyÂ
âItâs one of your nicest qualitiesâ he shrugged a bit.Â
âOh one of them? Are there many?â She smiled, flipping the page.
âI think the question should be if you have any flawsâ he said, and her eyes flicked back to his.Â
They were now sitting so close that their faces were less then a foot apart. âI think we both know thatâs bullshit.â She saidÂ
âTo you maybeâ his eyes flickered to her lips momentarily.Â
âI always catch you doing thatâ she teased, smiling a bit.Â
âDoing what?â He asked, his eyes meeting hers again.Â
âI dunnoâŠstaring at me..like..â she looks at his lips for a long moment before meeting his gaze once again.Â
âWhy do you think?â He asked quietly.Â
âThere are alot of things I canât seem to figure out about youâŠCarmyâ she said just above a whisper.Â
âWell what do you want to know. Iâm uhâŠtrying to be more open.â He said equally as soft.Â
âDo you know why I really came here?â She askedÂ
âBecause you saw the fuckin drawing, somehow.â He smiled a bit.Â
âYesâ she chuckled âbut- it just..it kinda confirmed something for me I dunno- I just wanted to come check if maybe-âÂ
Sheâs interrupted by his lips on hers, she was surprised at first, but of course didnât pull away. He cupped her cheek gently, his thumb rubbing over her supple skin.Â
The way their lips moved together was natural, like theyâd done this already a thousand times in a hundred lives. His nose gently nudges hers and she wraps her fingers in his dirty blonde curls, tugging gently how sheâd fantasized so many times.Â
He slid his tongue over her plump bottom lip, humming softly when she opened her mouth at the contact. His hands were nearly shaking. His entire body felt like it was exploding with tiny fireworks underneath his skin.Â
The air between them both felt as if it was crackling with electricity. As if the universe was humming in approval that they had finally accepted their bond.Â
Sydney had never felt anything so right. She felt as if every stress in her life evaporated, as if her and Carmy were the only 2 people in the world. She felt like she was glowing from the inside out. âTâmake sure I wanted tâdo thatâŠright?â He said softly when she pulled away.Â

A repost.
Henry Harison Stickmin
Nicknames: Hen, Hank, Sticks, Sticky, Sir Harison, HS_1214, Person of Interest #52763
Age: 28 (As of mid 2019.)
Birthplace: Carlsbad, NM
Current Location: Tucson, AZ
Nationality: Scottish-American
Physical description: Normal build, Blue eyes, (White, sunburnt skin), Shaven hair, Two scars on right forearm, Scar near upper abdomen.
Bio: It would seem that he's done with being a petty criminal. For now.
Just a normal dude like everybody else like him in his country.
No traumatic past, just a normal, carefree kid.
His parents divorced in late 2013, but they're still on good terms.
He's a bit Introverted, and as such is usually silent and doesn't feel all that comfortable out in public.
He considers himself an Agnostic.
Sometimes communicates using hand gestures or body language.
Doesn't like speaking in length, but can if he wants to.
Not a person to let bygones be bygones.
This particular Henry hails from a timeline where he hated toppats and other associated organized criminal groups.
Has substantial knowledge of other timelines, even remembers experiencing a temporal phenomenon well before the botched bank robbery attempt.
Frequently has vivid dreams (or nightmares) about bizarre things, and sometimes about things in the past or the other (less fortunate) timelines.
Has a diary to write down whatever happens in a day or what he's just experienced.
Has been keeping diaries well since mid 2016.
Knows about his extraordinary luck.
Doesn't know how many superntural abilities he possesses.
His knowledge about what happened in those timelines has made him pessimistic, a bit depressed, and hate himself for existing.
Has contemplated on the possibility that he might be living in a simulation, but has since dropped such "bogus crackpot conspiracy bullshit".
A light smoker. One pack is enough to last 2 weeks, and he rarely smokes.
His notoriety has died down since the beginning of 2019.
Sometimes asked if he is the real Henry Stickmin by passing pedestrians.
Has accounts on Reddit, Twitter and YouTube, all under the alias HS1214 and Twitter handle TheHenryHStickmin.
Has a close relationship with Ellie through their shared hardships.
He and Ellie bought a home together using both of their Gov't' monetary compensation.
Sold his old home too.
Both have lived normal daily lives, so far.
A novice home cook.
Has a large amount of friends/accomplices/confidants, ranging from high school and university classmates, members of the Goverment/Armed Forces, members of several police departments, and even an ex-CCC contractor, as well as from countries as far and obscure as Honduras, Australia, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Turkiye, etc.
Knows a lot of languages, most notably Spanish, Scottish Gaelic, French, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian, German, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, Russian to name a few.
Keeps a roster of his notable confidants/accomplices on paper.
Knows Charles and Dave only to some degree, despite having met them on more than one occasion.
Never ashamed of being a former petty criminal.
Has an H&K USP Compact and an M16A2.
Likes wearing the same set of basic clothing every day (T-shirt, Trousers, Boots)
Recently started wearing boots more often.
Has a taste for clothing, loves thrifting and milsurp gear.
Sometimes, he will wear all black, balaclava included.
Other than his scooter, he also owns a Honda CR-V, which both he and Ellie drive.
Keeps all of his trinkets somwehere in his bedroom, even his Teleporter.
Puts some of his "spoils of war" (a number of various items from previous criminal acts) on display in his parts of house in a show of bravado. Including an empty money bag and the bumper of a police cruiser, license plate included.
Now just trying to live a more righteous life and stay away from crime.
Watched one too much news on TV and is probably plotting something daring against the remnants of what was once the Toppat Clan.
At the same time he only wishes to live a normal life and probably reverse his past mistakes temporally.
Doesn't know whether the CCC is onto him or not.

Postcards from Ukraine to members of Congress â a suggestion đĄ đșđŠ đșđž đź
It's clear that House Speaker Mike Johnson is acting on orders from Donald Trump to prevent a Senate bill which includes aid to Ukraine from getting a vote in the House of Representatives. Johnson is a craven careerist who would sell his mother into slavery to please Trump.
The Senate bill ("Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act") could still be taken up â and would almost certainly pass â if just a handful of Republicans from moderate districts decided to support a parliamentary procedure called a "discharge petition" in order to bypass Speaker Johnson.
There are 17 Republicans in the House of Representatives in 2022 who won in congressional districts where Joe Biden had beaten Donald Trump in 2020. These Republicans from moderate districts would be a good grouping to entreat to support the discharge petition. A number of them have already expressed support for Ukraine in the past. It's a matter of getting them to put conscience ahead of their fear of Trump.
Below is a list of addresses of the district offices of those 17 Republican Representatives. If you are in Ukraine, buy a postcard and clearly write a short message which tells how you love freedom and how Putin's illegal war has affected you. It can be in English or Ukrainian. Use a Ukrainian stamp for postage and mail it as soon as possible.
Individuals need pick just 1 of the 17. But schools, businesses, clubs, and military units with at least 17 people can arrange to send one to each of the listed Representatives.
Be polite but urgent. Perhaps remind them that Ronald Reagan understood the dangers of Russian imperialism.

FAQ
Why physical mail instead of email or phone calls? There's an enormous chance that your email would end up in a spam folder. Also, the Congressional email system tends to prioritize email originating from the districts of each individual House member. Phone calls from outside the US are likely to be filtered out. Unlike email or phone calls, a physical piece of mail has a real world presence. The recipient has to do something with it. You can't simply press DELETE to get rid of it.
Why postcards and not letters? For security reasons. It takes less time and effort to inspect a postcard than a letter or parcel. Your mail will arrive sooner.
Why use postage stamps instead of a postage meter? You want the recipient to know that you are REALLY from Ukraine. Using official Ukrainian stamps is a simple way to do that. When people see ĐŁĐșŃĐ°ŃĐœĐ° or Ukraina on the stamp then they will know it originated in Free Ukraine. FYI: the letter Đ does not exist in Russian, recipients should look for this on the stamp. Also, your stamp automatically turns the postcard into a collector's item. It is more likely to be saved and to serve as a continuing reminder of your urgent request.
Why send the postcards to district offices instead of offices in Washington? Postcards from Ukraine will get more attention locally by local staff; if a sizable number arrive, it might even get mentioned in local media. In Washington, people tend to be more blasé about such things.
What is the proper form of address for House members? Rep. or Representative before the surname â no distinction based on gender.
FOR REFERENCE: Here are electoral stats for the districts. The column marked R margin indicates the size of each Representative's winning margin in 2022. Rep. Duarte, for example, beat his Democratic opponent by a very narrow 0.4%

Lil Kalish at HuffPost (09.13.2024):
Daniel Trujilloâs first month of junior year has been a âcakewalk.â Heâs in two different jazz bands and is a member of his schoolâs chapter of March for Our Lives chapter, a student-led organization promoting gun control. He dreams of studying music in college. But getting there has not been easy for Daniel and his family â especially in Arizona, where a barrage of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and rhetoric has threatened their sense of safety. In 2022, state Republicans banned gender-affirming surgeries for minors in Arizona, though those procedures were already rare, and barred trans girls from playing on girls sports teams in schools. (A federal appeals court decision this week stopped the latter law from going into effect.)
Lizette Trujillo, Danielâs mom, has traveled from their home in Tucson to Phoenix each legislative session over the last six years, taking time off work to testify in opposition to such anti-LGBTQ+ bills. Daniel has joined her on those trips since 2020. âMy husband and I are small business owners, and itâs given me the flexibility to devote my life in this really distinct way to fighting the trans legislation in our state. If I clocked the hours of free volunteer time, itâs significant,â Lizette Trujillo told HuffPost. And when they arenât traveling to the state Capitol, the Trujillo family is focused on cultivating a safe, accepting community in their city. [...] Organizers across the country are sounding the alarm about the high stakes of the November presidential election and the looming threat of Project 2025, the conservative playbook for a second Trump presidency spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation. Project 2025 equates being transgender with pornography, calls for federal government to enforce sex discrimination protections based on the âbinary biological meaning of âsex,ââ and argues that educators and librarians who share materials about trans identity should have to register as sex offenders. In addition, Trump has vowed to roll back Title IX protections for transgender students and criminalize doctors who provide gender-affirming care if heâs reelected. The former president has spent the last few weeks repeating false claims that children are undergoing gender transition surgery at school and without parental consent. This week, he also refused to answer whether heâd veto a national abortion ban. By contrast, Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris has campaigned on the promise of restoring access to abortion and the âwomanâs right to make decisions about her own body.â Her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, has been a champion of trans rights in his home state.
A forthcoming Supreme Court case, L.W. v. Skrmetti, will decide the legality of Tennesseeâs ban on gender-affirming care for youth. Justices will begin hearing oral arguments next month, and their decision, which is expected next summer, could have sweeping ramifications for the state of gender-affirming health care for trans youth nationwide. Activists argue that the outcome of the election and the courtâs decision on gender-affirming care, like its decision overturning the right to an abortion, will affect all kinds of people who are made vulnerable in society. Thatâs why organizers are working so hard to bring those fights together, under the umbrella of the broader struggle for bodily autonomy â and to do so while also celebrating the beauty of self-determination. Danielâs story is one of nine about trans and gender-nonconforming young people featured in the American Civil Liberties Unionâs new âFreedom To Beâ campaign, which launched this week and aims to spotlight two things that advocates say are largely missing from mainstream stories and coverage of transgender youth: joy and intersectional identities. And on Saturday, the Gender Liberation Movement â a new group to help bridge the gap between the trans rights and reproductive rights movements â will hold its first march and festival at Columbus Circle in Washington D.C., one block away from the Heritage Foundationâs headquarters. Daniel and Lizette Trujillo are slated to take the stage at the event, along with trans rights advocate Miss Major and actors Elliot Page and Julio Torres.
âAt the heart of this effort is looking at the connections between all of the attacks, particularly from the right, on communities on the margins,â said Raquel Willis, a Black trans activist and writer who co-founded the Gender Liberation Movement with Eliel Cruz, an organizer and communications worker, and others. âWe know that restrictions around access to abortion and reproductive justice have been a galvanizing fight for a lot of people on the left, and in queer and trans circles a lot of us have been fighting against restrictions around access to gender-affirming care.â Conservatives often use the same political playbook to target both abortion and trans rights, Willis said.
âThe strongest connective tissue between our struggles is bodily autonomy,â she added. Restrictions on reproductive rights go hand in hand with the rollback of LGBTQ+ rights, harsher immigration policy and restrictions on what parts of U.S. history can be taught in schools â and what should be censored, Willis said. Everyone is harmed by anti-trans laws and rhetoric, she added, but especially cisgender women of color and gender-nonconforming women. For example, she pointed to Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, whose recent Olympic win in womenâs boxing was heavily criticized by Trump, author J.K. Rowling and billionaire Elon Musk. They falsely claimed Khelif is trans and helped drum up a barrage of online abuse against her.
This past weekend featured a new protest movement called the Gender Liberation Movement that tackles abortion, gender-affirming care, and bodily autonomy.

Into the Honest Desert (The Gap Years Part 18)
June 30th 2019
Las Vegas, NV
The road trip resumes. How does one write distinctive dialogue? How does one write (risky, involving an elf) romance? I can do neither and I must do both.Â
âŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ
Brian has realized that this is the island of the lotus eaters, and he really hopes that doesnât make him Odysseus. He and his friends have spent the past nine days on the Las Vegas Strip, a few manicured miles of electric lighting that promises safety with its high population density. They left once, rediscovered the mythical horror of plague, and then turned right back around. They need vaccines, they need allies, and they need a goddamn plan. Would Brian rather risk death than stay here and wait in luxury for the end of the world? Once he rode his bike off of a woodland trail and tumbled halfway down a mountain before stumbling back out with a mad grin. Heâs been hurt in fights more times than he can count, and only learned to stop once he was on a school wrestling team and seeing blood meant pausing the match. Once he swung a crowbar at an enemy soldier so hard that its ribcage shattered and it bled out into the pavement. Heâs more of an Achilles than an Odysseus. Heâs not desperate to make it home.Â
Theyâre in different rooms now than when they first arrived, for the sake of secrecy. The humans have a suite of their own again, but most nights one of those beds is empty. Brian is political-dynasty-rich and a varsity star. He knows that everyone up to and including the media think heâs some manipulative jerk for sleeping around. Zerada⊠Zerada is a very different sort of situation. The noblewoman might as well be Circe, minus the ability to turn ancient Greek sailors into wild animals. Sheâs ninety-four and basically a princess and if this is a horrible choice, then he is the one thatâs going to pay. Honestly though, Brianâs already on a deadly quest to save the world. In the shadow of such a stupid, self-sacrificing decision, heâs not going to bother with second thoughts. If he gets turned into a pig, then Clay and Sierra can laugh at him once heâs back to normal. Heâs having a good time. Heâs not an idiot. He promises.Â
Theyâre all ready to leave this place. Clayâs been distraught since they saw the victims of Project Excalibur, and Sierra canât stand the noise. The three of them have been working to see where other elves might be. If they like to hide in ruins and forgotten villages, then the American West is full of possible locations. Thereâs so few people out here. Thatâs the problem though. Marin and Zerada have been very clear that their enemies know exactly where theyâve been staying, they just wonât risk an attack because there are so many people nearby. They will be hunted the moment they step out into the desert. Brian remembers the attack in Vya, that little Nevada ghost town. Clay mentioned the place to a local in another town just before he was charmed, and he assumes that the boy told on him. Of course, they also need to gather allies while maintaining utter secrecy.Â
Their only advantage is speed. Sierraâs car (The Audacity, for the years it took to make) is electric and the elves can charge it while they move. It can seat five, but it certainly wonât be as comfortable. Sheâs confident that it can handle going a hundred miles per hour, and that she can make repairs if it comes down to it. With illusion magic and relatively desolate highways, Brianâs told everyone to expect that pace. What that actually means is that they could get to Salt Lake City or Tucson by tonight, or easily reach the Atlantic Ocean by the Fourth of July. If they make up their plans as they go, the elves think they can outrun Ishtarâs forces. Theyâll have to change roads often, travel constantly, and be ready for an ambush, but itâs possible. All of that sounds less stressful than finals week, so Brianâs down for it.Â
Theyâre leaving today, even though Zerada has booked the rooms for another night. Hopefully theyâll be lost in the shuffle of tourism and the elven government wonât notice theyâve left. Even as they leave the city, disappearing into the crowd remains their only hope. The United States of America has a population of nearly three hundred and thirty million. Thatâs a third as large as the entire elven world. Without data sorting algorithms (advanced technology breaks down around magic. Heâs heard Sierra talking with Marin about the details), tech like license plate readers and facial recognition becomes far less useful. Theyâd still totally have been caught by now without Marinâs illusions, and they still have to take precautions.Â
The team has split up to do some tasks of their own. (jokes about not splitting up in a horror film have been shockingly rare). Sierra and Marin are trying to check the car for tracking devices, though the pair might have gotten distracted. Clayâs taken on the job of organizing Marinâs messenger bag so they can actually find things in the heat of the moment, and Brianâs back in the room leaving a paper trail. On some level, he and his friends got into the colleges they did because of their fathers, but they are also very good at what they do. While Marin and Zerada ran off to wherever, the three of them scanned the entire Mountain Time Zone for places where elves might hide. Thereâs an old rocket testing facility in Utah surrounded by industrial waste, an abandoned site once used for creating chemical weapons, and, of course, thousands of square miles of not-quite untouched wilderness. Heâs packing up most of their research, but leaving a little behind. Surely the elves will search their room soon.Â
The plan is to stay in the desert for a while longer. However, most of what heâs leaving behind points north to Idaho and Montana. Heâs no spy (heâs just read a few books about them) so his work isnât anything particularly good. He imagines a bunch of paper-pushing bureaucrats in a place that looks straight out of Middle Earth getting fed up with the misinformation, but they probably wonât fall for it. Either way, theyâre heading for the hottest region in the nation, and heâs worried how well Marin can handle it. Heâs agile, but weak. No, not weak. The elven prince is fragile. Brian remembers his carnival duel against him and how Marin never lost a game about accuracy or balance. Heâs certainly an athlete, just not the same type as Brian.Â
There is a quick beep from the door. He bolts upright, hand moving to the holster on his belt. The door swings open. A tall woman smiles back at him. Zerada Adust. Brian slowly moves his hand away from the gun and smiles. Her hair is loose and she wears a stylish cut-out shirt that is probably as red as his blushing face.
âDonât go and do Ishtarâs job for her,â she laughs. âAre you almost done? Itâs about high noonâ.Â
âYeah, I was just checking to make sure we hadnât left anything important behindâ. He feels this need to justify himself to Zerada, but why shouldnât he? She has the easy confidence of a person who knows she is the most important person on a team. Itâs been a long time since Brian was the star.Â
âSorry to drag you away on this quest. There isnât much where weâre goingâ.
âYou have no idea how human you sound. Iâm from a desert family, and they love this stuffâ. She leans against a wall and says something with what he guesses is a fancy elven accent, âour burden as nobility to preserve the worldsâ.Â
âBut you wanted moreâ. Itâs not a question. Heâs already heard about Zeradaâs love for all things new and thrilling. Itâs a desire he recognizes, and what drew him to her in the first place.Â
âI doâ.Â
âSo the desert is it?â
âSo the desert it isâ. Â
He gathers the few items that arenât already with Clay and brushes imaginary dust off of his shorts. Brian has no delusions that Zerada is a kind woman. He is a passing interest to her, a boy clever and attractive enough to have earned some of her time on this deadly mission. He tells himself she would sacrifice him in an instant to save herself. Itâs almost refreshing. He throws an arm around Zerada and gives her a kiss. Thereâs no debts or legacies, just two people in the same space with no reason to do anything else. Unlike Clay, he is not a person with a need to plan. Worrying about something bad just hurts you twice, right?Â
He finds the other three members of the party gathered around the car on the top level of an underground parking garage. The ceiling lights are dim and warm, but the car itself has Back To The Future style rear doors and cool fluorescent accents. Itâs a prototype from her fatherâs company. It had too many flaws to go to production, but she and her mom tried to fix one themselves. The Audacity, as the Brackens call it, looks like a spaceship. It matches the Vegas Strip, but not the infrastructure underneath it, and it will be all too recognizable out in the desert. Sierra unplugs the charging cord and tosses Brian the keys. (Luckily, the curse has mostly affected her left arm). The car can more or less drive itself but always obeys the speed limit.Â
They take their seats and the doors swing down into place. Brian is the driver, his sleek black sunglasses resting on the dashboard until they get to the surface. Zerada has been offered the passenger seat again, mostly because no one dares to take it from her. Clay and Marin sit by each back window, and Sierra is in the middle. He puts the car into drive. Clay fiddles with a paper map and passes it forward. Their first stop is a state park less than an hour away, just for fun.Â
The car radio crackles to life as they leave the garage and reach the surface.
âNew stop or new state means new music!â Brian says triumphantly, as heâs the next one in their rotation. The radio is still set to Sierraâs 80s rock. He prefers modern pop, specifically the more hip-hop side of things. Heâs not really musical though. The Vegas Strip is a road lined by hotels on either side. All of that flair has been replaced by square buildings and dust by the time that they pull onto the Las Vegas Freeway. Nothing ahead of them rises higher than three stories above the dry ground. He can see mountains ahead, and the skyscrapers of The Strip are clear in his rearview mirror.Â
They drive. He expects that the scruffy bushes and bare stone hills will be very familiar after the next few days. The whole situation is strange with Zerada in the car. She upsets the balance. Before, it had been the three of them and Marin the outsider, but he was nervous and willing to adapt. Zerada is calm and stunning and when she takes his hand while he leaves the car on autopilot he can almost feel Clay and Sierra sharing a look from the back. In an attempt to avoid talk shows, (it's fun to listen for celebrities they've met, but one host mentioned Sierra and ruined her entire day) they hear three Billie Eilish songs in ten minutes. Sierra puts her headphones on and Marin starts to argue that he has CDs in his bag. Brian shoots back that theyâre all jazz and blues recordings from 1970 at the latest. Marin corrects him on the genres but not the time period. Two stops or states from now, it will be his turn to choose the music.Â
After thirty minutes or so, a crag of rock rises from the tan desert. It is such a vibrant red that it looks almost like someone changed the saturation and hue of a photo. It looms beside them like a breaking wave and Brian doesnât need his directions to tell him that they have almost reached their first stop. Itâs the hottest part of the afternoon as they pull their car beside a standing rock in Valley of Fire State Park. They canât stay for long. They need to be far away by the time they set up camp, and the heat feels like stepping into an oven. Still, he wants to hike and bike or climb the smooth sandstone. Dry heat isnât like wet heat. He never realizes just how high the temperature has climbed until he stops for a rest and realizes that his mouth feels like heâs been eating the sand. He drinks from a water bottle and looks up.Â
A metal staircase clings to the side of the rock. There are some other tourists nearby, or standing at the top. The metal railings are too hot to hold as the five of them climb the steps to a platform overlooking a slanted rock wall. Heâs no geologist, but the rock is covered with a black tarnish, and that tarnish has been scraped away to show symbols. There are humanoid drawings, animals with horns, and geometric shapes. A sign calls them petroglyphs, rock carvings, and explains that they are about two thousand years old. Thirty human lifetimes, or just four elven ones. Marin and Zerada can trace their families back at least twice that far into the past. He stares at the carvings, and then back at the tourists, and down to the shining car. Heâd been hoping to double back to the Grand Canyon at some point, but suddenly Brian has no desire to feel small. He rests his head on Zeradaâs shoulder on the way back down. This, at least, is important.Â
âŠâŠâŠâŠ.
I drove from Vegas to Valley of Fire a couple of years ago. The rocks really do look edited in person. Like this!
Also, to make it clear, Brian is an idiot. He is eighteen and he knows full well that Zerada specializes in charms, mental manipulation, and power. This will not end well.Â
